Americans Are Losing Their Work Ethic
Even reduced immigration and job openings for miles aren't luring America's ever-growing workforce dropouts back in.

Policy analysts who favor reduced immigration to the United States have always had one plausibly compelling argument: If you cut off the supply of cheaper labor, they maintained, employers would be forced to raise wages for lower-skilled, native-born workers, who would then demonstrate the fiction behind the contention that there were some jobs "Americans just won't do."
Well, we have just conducted a fascinating real-world test of that hypothesis. Beginning with the restrictionist presidency of Donald Trump in 2017, and then supercharging through the effective 2020–21 border-closure triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. took in about 1.7 million fewer working-age immigrants than would have come at the prior intake rate, according to a recent analysis by Giovanni Peri, economics professor at University of California at Davis.
Meanwhile, absent those immigrants the domestic economy experienced a post-vaccine hiring explosion, with the unemployment rate—which measures the percentage of people actively looking for but failing to find a job—hitting 50-year lows. Inflation-adjusted average wage growth also jumped for a while there, increasing by at least 4 percent annualized for 12 consecutive months.
This should have been the moment when the startlingly high number of prime-aged Americans classified as Not in the Labor Force ("NILFs," no really) got off the sidelines and back into the job market.
And yet: "That did not increase work rates or labor force participation of Americans who are already here," says American Enterprise Institute economist Nicholas Eberstadt, author of the freshly revised (with post-pandemic intro) 2016 book Men Without Work. "We've now got this incredible peacetime labor shortage, and we also have a drop in the number of people in the workforce, by at least a ballpark of 3 million lower than we would have expected on trend before COVID. And that's leaving out immigration, so it's actually lower."
Friday's new jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics underscores America's globally anomalous position: The unemployment rate is at an enviable 3.5 percent, businesses still have 10 million unfilled positions, and yet the labor force participation rate languishes at a miserable 62.3 percent—more than a percentage point lower than before the pandemic.
"For every [25–54-year-old] guy who is out of work and looking for a job…in 2022, there are four guys who are neither working nor looking for work," Eberstadt told me this week in an interview for The Fifth Column podcast. "This is the fastest growing component of men in this age group, and it has been the fastest growing component for almost 60 years now."
"Americans," Eberstadt writes in his new introduction, "have been renowned for their work ethic, but the future of that work ethic should not be taken for granted."
The data is startling to behold. A higher percentage of prime-aged American men don't work now—again, at a time of historically low "unemployment"—than during the Great Depression. The United States, where Europeans have always come to work, has a lower labor force participation rate than any European country except Italy (where there are certain, ah, traditions of work activity that escapes traditional measures). And the flight from work has been remarkably steady over time.
"For a trend involving human beings, it's almost a straight line—you can't tell when the recessions came and you can't tell when China entered the WTO," Eberstadt says. "This retreat is so uncannily, weirdly, eerily regular that when I recalculated that line for the latest edition of this book, it basically continued from where the line ended in 2016. It's almost the same straight line, almost identical."
There are no silver-bullet explanations for the American defection from work. Yes, international trade radically changed the face of manufacturing, but that's also true in Canada, which has seen nothing like this dropout rate. Sure, a huge percentage of NILFs—at least half, Eberstadt reckons—are on disability, but it's not like Western Europe is unfamiliar with the welfare state. The United States has, by far, the rich world's highest incarceration rate, which has all kinds of downstream effects on the employability of ex-felons, but even that can only account for a fraction of the shift.
Whatever the cause, the effects of this seismic shift in the labor market have upended everything from civil society to politics.
"There is absolutely nothing good that comes out of this trend," Eberstadt says. "It isn't like the seven million dropouts are working in community gardens or brushing up on their Schopenhauer or whatever. What this trend has meant is slower economic growth for the country, wider income and wealth gaps, more dependence on government welfare programs, more pressure on fragile families, less social mobility, less involvement in society, and a lot more deaths of despair."
It also appears to be habit forming. The employment rate for males between 2001 and 2021 decreased in every age bracket younger than 55, while increasing in every cohort 55 and older, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The younger the group, the more dramatic the drop—16–19-year-old males went from 50 percent to 36 percent. We could be rapidly approaching the moment where half the population hasn't had a job before the age of 25.
Meanwhile, you know who's working the most? Men of Hispanic origin, according to the BLS chart. And immigrants in general.
"It's a very clear picture," Eberstadt says. "No matter what ethnicity you are or what part of the world you come from, if you're an immigrant guy, your workforce participation level rate…is going to be higher than your native-born counterpart. That's true for Latinos, it's true for Asians, true for African-Americans, it's true for Anglos….If you're a foreign-born guy who's married and has no high school degree, your workforce participation profile is essentially indistinguishable from a college-educated, native-born guy."
This historically weird employment picture has potential policy implications aplenty: At minimum, expediting the immigration backlog, rethinking Social Security's disability insurance, and reduce the carceral state.
But we also need some recognition that the status quo cannot last. The shrinking percentage of Americans who do work still work longer and harder than all of their rich-world counterparts, effectively financing the idleness of their contemporaries. Sooner rather than later, that mix will become politically unpalatable.
The experiment of running an economy without immigrants has now been tried, and the native-born dropouts didn't budge. Instead of scapegoating those among us working the hardest, we might consider changing the incentive structures for those who can no longer be moved to work.

So bring more poor working foreigners in so lazy Americans can stay home?
How about reducing fucking welfare.
Reducing welfare is racist.
A work ethic is racist.
Reducing government dependency would do a lot to force a work ethic.
Reducing government is racist,
Not increasing government is racist.
I am making 80 US dollars per hr. to complete some internet services from home. I did not ever think it would even be achievable , however my confidant mate got $13k only in four weeks, easily doing this best assignment and also she convinced me to avail.

Between reducing the workforce, eliminating inventory, price gouging and poor service as people “mail it in” from home, the lower and middle class quality of life has gone to hell.
Meanwhile the wealthy industrialists feel no pain as they record record profits.
Good thing they’re capitalists and not socialists.
Rob Misek will FIX it for us ALL by burning the evil Jews!!! (And then denying that ANY witches or Jews were burned!)
Right, right-wing wrong-nut StormFag?
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, i’m now creating over $35400 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! i do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28100 dollars, its simple online operating jobs

Not being a racist is racist.
Certainly *saying* you're not racist is racist.
Working was created by white people to oppress everyone /sarc
LOL +100000000... Humorously; if you take out all the deception and B.S. that's essentially what Nazi-Fans are saying all the time.
The shrinking percentage of Americans who do work still work longer and harder than all of their rich-world counterparts, effectively financing the idleness of their contemporaries.
I.e. Boomers are supporting the later generations. I guess that is deserved for those who voted in all the welfare programs, I.e. Donkeys, who are probably the least likely to still be working after reaching 55. So old conservatives are the engine of the USA.
No surprise there.
Reduced immigration?
Where?
Not here in the USA.
Perhaps employers have to attract workers. The market is not always going to be on the side of the employers.
yeah – i thought the US just got 4 million more people from across the southern border over the last 2 years
On top of LEGAL immigration!
READ the fucking article, fascist idiot! "Facts" are optional to fascist assholes, it seems!
"Beginning with the restrictionist presidency of Donald Trump in 2017, and then supercharging through the effective 2020–21 border-closure triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. took in about 1.7 million fewer working-age immigrants than would have come at the prior intake rate, according to a recent analysis by Giovanni Peri, economics professor at University of California at Davis."
What does "took in" mean when the article says "the U.S. took in about 1.7 million fewer...imigrants..."? Does that include illegal immigrants? If it doesn't, which I can't imagine it does, then you're a smug, condescending moron with little to no critical thinking abilities and you should refrain from commenting on smarter people's posts.
If illegal sub-humans are evil and the ones who have their magic "papers please", are all totally good and productive, then... GIVE those magic "papers please" to the illegal sub-humans, and the problem is SOLVED!!! And you're welcome!!!
Here's a good read for those who still have an open mind... Cato…
https://www.cato.org/policy-report/januaryfebruary-2019/myths-facts-immigration-policy
https://www.cato.org/blog/crime-along-mexican-border-lower-rest-country
Or maybe you can just move (?back?) to the nation all your buddies are in and stop trying to use smug, condescending absurdities to encourage a USA invasion by foreigners.
Because I don't think you can really say with a straight face that giving known law-breakers a magical "paper" pass is the best immigration policy for a nation of laws. I mean for F'Sakes you just as well be saying the USA should give every bank robber a bank.
"then you’re a smug, condescending moron with little to no critical thinking abilities"
Oh, Sqrlsy's definitely a smug, condescending moron with little to no critical thinking abilities, and those are his best features.
The quote says beginning in 2017, but the shows that it started in 2019.
Reason distinguishes between legal and illegal immigration only when doing so reinforces their point. In this case, Matt is simply pretending that illegal immigration doesn't exist and the illegal immigrants don't work.
Yes, the first graph would be quite different if illegals were counted.
It's almost like businesses should have consequences for hiring illegal workers. Nah, that's just crazy.
Humorously they pay taxes to the National Government for it to protect the USA from invasion but I guess it's too busy building an at-home Nazi(National Socialist)-Empire to do its very limited JOB duties so I guess business will pay for job UN-done on top of doing the job themselves?
To a true libertarian, there is no such thing as an illegal immigrant
One of several reasons why "true libertarianism" is a suicide pact.
I'd be happy to be considered a "true libertarian" on this open-borders topic just as soon as the welfare state is completely eliminated.

"For every [25–54-year-old] guy who is out of work and looking for a job…in 2022, there are four guys who are neither working nor looking for work,"
WTF? Just this morning the Peanut Gallery was telling me that those "four guys not looking for work" was proof that the economy is in shambles and that no jobs existed for them. The awful .6% contraction in GDP is therefore akin to the Great Depression and we must bring the Con Man "King of Debt" back to hand out $1400 checks to those poor beleaguered men.
Wow, Trump really broke you, didn't he?
No. I was an asshole before the Con Man stiffed his first contractor.
You left our LYING asshole, shit-pile.

Which brings us to the Law of Salutary Contradiction, whose formulation is: “That’s not happening and it’s good that it is.” While the Law of Merited Impossibility applies to the future, this one is about the present. It’s what the ruling class immediately switches to after what they insisted would “never” happen is happening before everyone’s eyes.
You got the "asshole" part right, but not much else.
"No. I was an asshole before"
Strange way to spell "pedophile", Shrike.
He really went all in for Biden after he heard about the contents of Ashley Biden’s diary. Brandon is is spirit animal now.
guess he doesn’t have a cute rejoinder for that one..
It's quite the textured burn -
makes a character impeaching suppressed-by-the-press point about Biden and also alludes to an 'uncomfortable' understanding about the commenter.
To be so accurate at multiple targets in one shot is commendable!
Lol, true.
Thank you. Every so often I strike gold.

Hey EvilBahnFuhrer …
If EVERYONE who makes you look bad, by being smarter and better-looking than you, killed themselves, per your wishes, then there would be NO ONE left!
Who would feed you? Who’s tits would you suck at, to make a living? WHO would change your perpetually-smelly DIAPERS?!!?
You’d better come up with a better plan, Stan!
Wow, that was so incomprehensible, I don't know where to start. I guess it can be summed up as "OrangeManBad says Sqrlsy".
Once again all I see is comment hidden because use muted.
Am I doing something wrong or right?
It was an insane, nearly incomprehensible Sqrlsy rant with a bizarre poem about Kool Aid. I keep him unmuted merely for the laughs.
“Am I doing something wrong or right?”
Depends on what your objectives are. If, in your death-worshitting ways, you are seeking to burn along with your Evil One boss, in a hate-filled Hell, then you are doing EVERYTHING right! Mute those who speak of better ways of thinking and living, and MUTE that pesky conscience of yours!!!
The intelligent, well-informed, and benevolent members of tribes have ALWAYS been resented by those who are made to look relatively worse (often FAR worse), as compared to the advanced ones. Especially when the advanced ones denigrate tribalism. The advanced ones DARE to openly mock “MY Tribe’s lies leading to violence against your tribe GOOD! Your tribe’s lies leading to violence against MY Tribe BAD! VERY bad!” And then that’s when the Jesus-killers, Mahatma Gandhi-killers, Martin Luther King Jr.-killers, etc., unsheath their long knives!
“Do-gooder derogation” (look it up) is a socio-biologically programmed instinct. SOME of us are ethically advanced enough to overcome it, using benevolence and free will! For details, see http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Do_Gooders_Bad/ and http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Jesus_Validated/ .
In conclusion, troglodytes, thanks for helping me to prove my points!
Yep, definitely not quite readable.
Not quite readable by the 'A) Willfully, stubbornly blind, and 'B) the intellectually handicapped!

Cram your gibberish invective up your ass, Sqrlsy.
It was very correct of you to mute SQRLSY. Not as correct as encasing him in wet concrete, but still very correct.
Sure, a huge percentage of NILFs—at least half, Eberstadt reckons—are on disability
West Virginny, Kentuck, and wherever else Red Hats congregate love their SS Disability, meth, Oxy, and Jesus.
I know that one is a trolling but I would say for all groups disability seems to be pretty wide net it includes.
What do you expect from the Oracle of Dogdick GA?
Yeah, and I do tend to agree this is a huge problem. Though this is the first time I've heard the term NILF, and I think they should reconsider that acronym.
Yeah, any acronym that ends in “ILF” better start with something that people want to fuck.
But to Buttplug, MILF has a different meaning.
I see what you did there.
Big difference from a minor change to the term.
Ba dum tsss
And only a minor concern. Although a bit childish. Possibly even infantile.
NEETs I'd Like to Fuck
Only the sexiest basement dwelling neckbeards here.
Yeah, any acronym that ends in “ILF” better start with something that people want to fuck
For NILF you can supply whatever N-word you choose.
Nanny I’d Like To….?
I tried to hire a hot nanny. All the prospective candidates either did not meet the desired boob to ass ratio, or walked when they found out I don’t have any young children.
Would you say they love it more or less than your love for child porn?
Hey, when NYU students can get professors fired for a class being "too hard," you can't expect that the workforce is going to reflect an ethic of hard work.
Oh, add Hunter Biden and Fatass Donnie to this NILF group.
Turns out Hunter is a tax evader too. Lock him up with Fatass Donnie.
You first, kiddie diddler.
"Turns out Hunter is a tax evader too. Lock him up with Fatass Donnie."
The lying TDS-addled shit pile and kiddie diddler expects some one here to believe this lie, among the many, many others he post.
Hint, asshole: Trump hasn't committed any crimes.
And that's not for lack of trying. Look at the New York AG. The best she can do is a civil suit where harm might have happened, and one she's likely to lose.
"...Look at the New York AG. The best she can do is a civil suit where harm might have happened, and one she’s likely to lose."
What sort of a lefty prosecutor are you if you can't list at least one attempt to incriminate Trump on your CV?!
Harm didnt happen. The loans were paid back already.
Exactly why she'll lose. It'll be damn funny to watch the lefties here think she's got something.
#WallsClosingIn
I'm surprised you aren't defending hunter. Don't you pedos tend to stick together?
He’s just eliminating his competition.
He’s probably searching for Hunter’s home videos from the laptop on the dark web. Specifically the knees where he’s raping his then 13 year old niece.
Trump went through a multi year IRS audit. They found nothing. But you’re actually a goddamn pedophile.
Kill yourself. You know you should.
Is this were we start to wonder if all those right-wing 'clean your room' types might be on to something?
Stop with your toxic masculinity.
We need something.
I remember when I read Jordan Peterson's book, 10 Wisdoms or whatever his first one was, I was struck by how nothing it was. It was a bunch of basic philosophy, things everyone already knows.
Over time, I've realized that, in fact, not everyone knows these things and so I've come to appreciate it. I think our situation is pretty dire right now, we do not want to go down the route of Japanification and whatever we can do to inspire some meaning in people once more, to get them out and doing things in the world of value, is so important.
Not just for the country, hell I don't care that much about GDP, but for the individuals themselves. If we became a country of purpose driven poors, that would be fine with me, but I see so much cynicism and directionlessness in people my age and younger. It's one of the biggest social issues of our days and it is woefully underdiscussed.
Peterson has himself commented on that. He's been asked about his "radical" messaging, and he's always taken pains to say that nothing he's saying is particularly profound (I think he says his most profound stuff during podcasts when talking to other interesting people), but he says that he believes it resonates and is popular because people are starved for this basic, simple messaging.
Yeah, he mostly is just saying that things everyone knew people were supposed to do a generation ago are actually important. And I think he has a lot of good insight on what makes a meaningful life.
I think this is the big thing. Our political fights are all very downstream from cultural trends which are beyond the realm of politics and are in a very bad place.
So, people like Peterson, or Mike Rowe, are doing important work as I see it. It's one thing I like about America. In our darkest hours it really does tend to recover from little grassroot innovation.
I've been reading The Forgotten Man by Amity Schales and it's nice to see all these stories of communities and individuals doing things during this period of disgusting government overreach.
The Forgotten Man is a good tome. Another is "The Tragedy of American Compassion" [Marvin Olasky], which explores the history of charity in the US and how it started to fail when the government became the arbiter and administrator of "charity" via taxation and redistribution.
No. Because the reality is that no one has actually bothered to find out what those who 'aren't participating in the labor force' are actually doing. Even though the trend has been in place for over 50 years now.
Playing Candy Crush
“Clean your room” is simply another way of saying that you are responsible for yourself.
Government has been squashing our ethic of personal responsibility for decades. That is the underlying flaw of the welfare state - it rewards dependency - and that slowly changes the culture.
When was the last time anyone mentioned the ‘Protestant work ethic’ except in a bad way?
Chamillionaire and BunB were on Sirius preaching the same yesterday afternoon. I expect them to be canceled
This historically weird employment picture has potential policy implications aplenty
No kidding.
Like a whole new demographic of MAGA nuts sitting on Breitbart, Parler, Twitter slinging feces at Biden voters who TERK THAR JERBS! while planning an attack on the capitol.
Damn Mr. Buttplug. Sixteen comments when I clicked on this and you're responsible for almost a third of them.
Does this mean you're back to a fulltime #DefendBidenAtAllCosts schedule? Unlike those weeks of relative quiet when you were too busy spending your #BidenBoom earnings on yachts and mansions and Ferraris and private islands?
#BestEconomyEver
No, but I took some satisfaction in this article that shot down stupid talking points that Mothers Lament and JesseAZ both foisted on us in the A.M. Links.
They were hyperventilating about the jobs report and how it was PROOF that Biden’s economy was in shambles based on their bogus reading of the Labor Participation Rate.
Welch pretty much confirmed that a large segment of native born men were lazy bastards that chose not to work.
"They were hyperventilating about the jobs report and how it was PROOF that Biden’s economy was in shambles"
I see.
As an admirer of your work for a number of years, I know you demand rigorous proof when determining if the economy is, in fact, in shambles. Like when you proved the pre-pandemic Trump economy was abysmal by linking to a story about Sam's Club closing some locations.
#LiberalCapitalism101
Remember urd lies; it’s all he ever does. Turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.
turd lies; it’s what he does. turd is a lying pile of lefty shit.
So basically, you ran away like a little chickenshit rather than take your medicine.
It’s The progressive way.
Jobs Americans won’t do!
If you provide trillions in cash.
No amount of stupid facts will ever sway the haters who arrived at their stance on immigration through emotion.
Ooohhhh! Now do Trump.
You misspelled "Whatabout."
he wasn't trying your argument; he was trying your character -
Can you 'do Trump' in this same manner?
is it even possible for you?
One thing he's pointing out is that it certainly isn't your default, your intent {ever} and you are a dishonest actor, and your remarks should be taken with knowledge of the type of source they come from.
But then, I don't have to tell you that - you know that's what he's doing - you're just deflecting.
I think his point is that if you don't like Trump then you arrived at that stance through emotion, being that TDS is the only possible excuse for not supporting the guy or his policies.
Dislike of Trump is a personal flaw. Just as racism (straight up) was the only possible explanation for not supporting the guy before him. But Trump supporters are different. They're not just like the leftists they hate. No, not at all.
You hate Trump. It drives most of your comments here. You hate him so much you’re perfectly happy giving Biden and his puppeteers (like Ron Klain and Susan Rice) free reign to flush the country down the toilet. This is an obvious fact that you showcase daily here.
Do you really deny this?
If you feel that way then you obviously don't read what I write, so there's no point in answering any questions from you.
Most of Trump’s supporters dislike him in many ways. After he is crude, vulgar, and narcissistic. But he also correctly addresses many political and social issues. And his achievements in office completely outshine any of our most recent presidents .
We support him because the other choices are so much worse despite their silky smooth lies…or mumbling in SloJo’s case…and insane proposals.
Just so you know, it was my departure from emotionalism that caused me to change my views on unchecked immigration and... open-ish borders. Once I began to view the facts and stop waving my arms around and reflexively shouting "you hate brown people you hate brown people you hate brown people you hate brown people" I began to see a more nuanced, complex view of the second-order effects of unchecked immigration.
Does one get accused of being anti-immigration when you're not? Yep. Does one get accused of hating brown people when you don't? Yep. But it's a price you pay when trying to explain *checks original comment* 'stupid facts' to emotional people.
Is "They're stealing our jobs!" a rational argument or an emotional one? This article makes it look like the latter. You can't steal what someone doesn't want.
You can’t steal what someone doesn’t want.
Or isn't legally allowed to take.
“They’re stealing our jobs!” a rational argument or an emotional one?
Who is making this argument?
I’ve given the moron many links showing the costs to border states for the illegal immigrants. To him it doesn’t matter because he is so far removed. So his response is not factual but emotional. He is using arguments from South Park 20 years ago. The fact that he is using the jobs argument just shows his own job insecurity. It isnt the jobs. It is the fucking costs.
The federal government only reimburses the costs of illegal immigrants by about 50%. 70% of jail costs, 0 of schooling costs (despite ESL students costing 3x the cost of English speaking), 60% of hospital costs. This doesn’t even get into the costs of damage to ranch owners homes, pollution from crossers, and costs of crime to local populations.
Sarc is just an emotional uneducated moron who can’t ever take 5 seconds to try to go past his first impressions.
Do you sneer when you type?
That fits you far better than Jesse. Just try to avoid going full Hihn with smirks.
And as typical he will resort to this instead of addressing the arguments. As he always does.
Tomorrow he will be back with his same talking points trying to get his jeff attaboys.
The reason you dont engage in the actual arguments and rely on long ago debunked talking points is because you choose intentional ignorance.
I'll take that as an affirmative.
As you continue to ignore the simple question. You’re pathetic.
You’re wrong. He’s not. So now you’re mad.
That about cover it?
What a pathetic piece-of-shit you are, Sarcasmic.
Constructive criticism like that is why I can't stay away from this place.
It’s so true. The issue of immigration too much gets boiled down into simplistic false/lacking context talking points and accusations. It’s either “they took our jobs, they are dependent on government handouts, or they are criminals,” to “you hate brown people, they don’t ever commit crime, they don’t use any government resources, and xenophobe.”
The issue is so tiring because almost no one approaches the issue from a factual, rational, and genuine position. It’s become such political fodder for both sides that nothing will ever get addressed. We will see the same approach to immigration in this country for years and years to come.
The costs of illegal immigration is one of the primary reasons Latino Americans are switching and majority against illegal immigration.
Even the lefts admired Hugo Chavez understood the costs and effects of unchecked illegal immigration.
Yes, that's why we shouldn't have unchecked illegal immigration. But with the positioning of both sides being so extreme, the issue will never get resolved and unchecked immigration will be the norm.
Both "sides" want massive illegal immigration. Don't be distracted by the scrimmage game they play over the details of immigration policy.
Both sides definitely like not having the issue being resolved.
How extreme is the right really? 1 million immigrants a year. The left demands the majority of this being from lottery visas while the right wants it based on capability with increased work permits.
That isn't extreme. Allowing 2.5 million illegals to cross while leftist NGOs teach them how to game the asylum system is extreme. Allowing 1 million plus a year legally and securing borders is not.
The right has it's extremist issues. Heck, the pure hatred of DACA kids is bizarre in its extremity. I mean, the hatred of DACA kids prevents the right from actually obtaining a strong hand on the issue of immigration compared to the left.
Additionally, the right needs to tone down the criminal and terrorist claims of immigrants and the "they took our jobs" approach to immigration.
It isnt hatred at the daca kids. It is anger at a president who said he didn't have a power doing it anyways.
No, it’s hatred personally directed at the kids. It may have been the result of actions of those on the left, but the hatred is now personal to DACA kids. And that’s quite clear as the hatred remains but the president at issue is long gone.
You're projecting
No it isnt. This is a liberal talking point. They aren’t angry at the kids. Full stop. It is anger at a program set up illegally for political reasons.
The program still remains. Even the latest ruling allow those already illegally processed to continue on the legal programs.
If it is anger at the kids find one person against DACA expressing this anger.
This is a media talking point you've apparently adopted.
Some form of the DREAM act has been introduced in Congress about a dozen times. It has never passed. Congress had spoken, but Obama went out and di the exact things he said he couldn't legally do.
I had few problems with DACA kids, but Obama turning around and doing something he said that he knew he had no authority to do did piss me off. Other than that, no problem letting the DACA kids stay, just wanted Congress to pass a law clarifying that position. And, of course, deporting the DACA kids’ parents as soon as they were located. The DACA kids may not have known they were breaking federal laws every day, but their parents did.
Immigration policy shouldn’t be based around bringing the least productive, least educated, most indigent, and most likely to vote for Marxists. Which is what democrats want.
We're getting close to the point in the process when voting is eliminated anyway.
The issue is so tiring because almost no one approaches the issue from a factual, rational, and genuine position.
From the European perspective, I would suggest Douglas Murray's 2015 book, "The Strange Death of Europe".
Douglas Murray is one who definitely approaches the situation from a rational point of view. Love his writings. Just finished War on the West.
Strange Death changed my mind on illegal immigration. Though it’s not 100% analogous to the American situation, what’s very similar are the politicians with nothing but contempt for their own citizenry.

More: A final screenshot. All of this security data about U.S. election operations - during and after the 2020 elections - was and is still today hosted in communist China, under the benevolent and ever watchful eyes of the CCP, who naturally only want the best for America.
The Obama administration (with a little help from the Roberts court) got the ball rolling with their “here’s free healthcare, now you can pursue your dreams!” bullshit. Then chinaflu put millions out of work with free checks in the mail. Thus an entire generation in the US was taught that their needs can be met by Big Daddy Gov. Just ignore the exponentially increasing hordes of homeless, the uniparty will fix that later.
So here we are, the economy is tanking, kiddos are failing school by every metric we use, and we’re well on our way to the energy shortages already fucking happening in Europe. One would think it’s time to “roll up our sleeves” and get this shit fixed, but that doesn’t seem to be feasible anymore, does it?
I asked my formerly sel supporting wife if sel is so good why are students failing in math failing in reading mor anxious more depressed and more suicidal?
that doesn’t seem to be feasible anymore, does it?
No, it's not. The power of today's Power Elite is such that they cannot be overthrown by popular uprising. They're going to do as they wish to us, and we can't stop them.
Not when you watch a massive corporatist censorship regime which is directed by the state but masquerading as freedom being shrugged off by the Libertarian Standardbearers as a "business decision".
The American experiment, and the larger project of Western Liberalism may be over, and it wasn't Putin or China that killed it. We killed it, they're just going to fill the vacuum.
Eh, I question that. I'm sympathetic to the former statement, but I have no idea what fills it. The more I read on Russia and China the more obvious their own problems are. Which, short term is scary, a wounded animal is the most dangerous. Long term though, no fucking clue.
A sick, dying, desperate Putin with control of a nuclear arsenal is terrifying. And our commander in chief is a doddering, senile soon to be octogenarian (turns 80 November 20th) that is puppeteered by the most incapable leftist idiots in politics. Who appear to be pushing us towards a hot war with Russia.
The democrats have to go. Period.
"One would think it’s time to “roll up our sleeves” and get this shit fixed, but that doesn’t seem to be feasible anymore, does it?"
They stopped manufacturing my favorite bootstraps in 2005. Such a shame too, you could get a real grip on those things and pull like there was no tomorrow.
BTW, this article goes back to the questions I kept posting in the comments during Nick's excited "great quit-out" articles on how everyone is leaving the workforce to go do... *something* and that *something* was never clearly identified or described.
I kept asking, "Ok, WHAT are they quitting their jobs and doing, are they all becoming EDM musicians and youtubers? Because that won't last".
This seems to suggest that we're in the "it's happening, and it's as bad as you say" phase.
I actually also wonder where they are going. Women can stay home with the kids, and I wouldn't be shocked to find out a lot of women became stay at home moms in a couple years. But where do the guys go? They've still got rent to pay, and I haven't heard any rumblings about lots of young men moving back home.
That's assuming these guys aren't married. I've actually met some couples where he stays home and she works as the jobs she can get pay more (nursing, doctor, lawyer, etc.).
This is a subject that has always been a bit near and dear to my heart. Not just in this modern economic post COVID climate, but on an individual level.
For decades I’ve heard stories of this or that person that “quit their career” and decided to start a full-time mission to *checks internet* enlighten France to the wonders of Kale!
So… how does that work, how do you… keep the lights on while you go to markets in Paris and try to explain the sellers how awesome Kale is while you live in your high-ceiling, fashionable 18th century Paris Apartment on the Champs Elyzee (said in Australian accent)?
Oooooh, your husband is a high powered lawyer, or a real estate developer…
For instance, there are a couple of car youtubers I followed a few years ago that had pretty high subscriber channels… they would buy and sell cars, review them etc. And i was like… how do these dudes afford to buy these used lambos and Rolls Royces? Then I found out they both had wives who were physicians.
So the bottom line is, unless you’re already rich enough to ‘retire’ or you have a spouse that is willing to forego the ‘bullshit rock and roll life’ and continue to do xer 9-5 in the salt mines, I just don’t see how the average normie can just ‘quit’ and do… nothing. And that’s what we’ve been told. Normies all over the nation have quit to go to… *something*
I would love to know the answer to this. How in the world can people afford to just not work in such numbers?
Goverment handouts and family that supports deadbeats. Try asking a harder question
Yet, that’s clearly not the full answer. Try thinking beyond political talking points, if you are capable.
The numbers are incorrect, or a lot of dudes are living with their parents and not moving forward with adulthood.
If that's true, it'd be nice for someone to research and investigate it. Right now, that's simply speculation.
My theory is unlimited internet and TV usage. It’s hard to think of a product or service that is not pay for use per gig/view? -Internet/cable TV.
Get rid of both and we will talk numbers
Solid response you got there.
He is probably just angry at all the DACA kids lol.
Some work a little ‘under the table’ to supplement their welfare lifestyle. Many are also benefits cheats.
I know a couple guys who got hitched up with nurses and are now living a lifestyle way beyond what they could afford on their own. But none of them quit their jobs. I also suspect they're up to their eyeballs in debt being that living within or below one's means is seriously looked down upon.
See, that's what I'm talking about. Figure it out, ask some questions. Is there a new debt crisis that's going to whiplash the economy? Kids living on credit cards, pushing their debt ceiling higher and higher? Are the working but just undermployed? Are they being supported by a spouse or (most likely) girlfriend?
“Is there a new debt crisis that’s going to whiplash the economy?”
Yes.
Many of the government 10 year bonds expire soon. Expect government to reduce interest before that 3 T hit occurs.
Why not? Uncle Brandon is paying top dollar for their votes.
You know, thinking about this, over the last 15 years or so, I have known an increasing number of couples where the husband doesn't work and the wife does. And it's not like it was a familial choice where everyone was on the same page. The pattern kind of went: Wife works. Husband works. Husband loses job, gets laid off. Wife continues to work. Husband 'tries' to find job, job-search peters out after about 3 months, then husband remains in permanent "yeah, I'm... looking... and stuff" mode while wife works. Wife mutters complaints under her breath, lot of eye rolling, but continues to work, husband now out of work one year, two years, three years and so on.
Again, completely anecdotal, but something I've seen a lot more of in the last 10 to 15 years.
TV Marketing appears to push that narrative, especially in shows that have large women audiences. Watch a couple hours of HGTV and you'll get the biracial couples, the lesbians with the fixer upper and stay at home dad with a baby papoose or running the show with the three kids. Once in awhile you get a white couple, usually older. Also, lots of 'make me happy' drugs for sale.
I think even with the supporter on the side, it's simply not a good path for a huge amount of people. Many people simply aren't self-driven enough to do things like that and do benefit from the structure a workplace provides. People on average seem to feel better if they view their success as coming from their own work, i.e. not handouts. I know that I do need that structure somewhat, I can be pretty independent within that space, but if I'm unemployed and told to "do whatever makes me feel fulfilled" I quickly find I mostly spend my time drinking.
It varies person to person, but I think on a higher level there is something here.
Lots of guys are the live-in baby daddies of women on public assistance.
That’s what the build back better was. Cash for kids
Some of it trickles down to the kids after Mom's Boyfriend gets his fill.
”For every [25–54-year-old] guy who is out of work and looking for a job…in 2022, there are four guys who are neither working nor looking for work,” Eberstadt told me this week in an interview for The Fifth Column podcast.
That’s something I do not understand. Unemployment isn’t enough to pay the rent, and it only lasts so long. What are these people doing? Living with their parents?
See my comment above. I don't know, and can't seem to get a clear answer. This seems like an opportunity for some serious, top-notch journalism. Unplug from Twitter, start hitting the pavement and making some phone calls.
Call who? Is there a club for parents with adult children in their basement?
Often journalists put out a call for people with stories. In this day and age, that can begin with social media. They then start slowly, making contacts with people who's personal experience fits within in the realm of the story they're doing, and start building a contact list and begin doing interviews. Start with business owners who've had people quit and haven't been able to replace. Talk to friends, family members who are or know someone who fits into the category.
This is why pavement-beating journalism is a lost art.
Well, these folks are 25 to 54 in age. There's some in prison (as addressed in the article), there's some still in college earning masters and PhD degrees. As for others not participating in the workforce, I wish I knew. I know that some men do stay at home and take care of the kids while the woman in the family works, especially if she has a high-paying job.
Just had an interview with a kid (30 years old) applying for a senior engineering position where his resume was 2 years at a company then back to school for another masters. The kid couldn't answer one question on application of his degrees. He seems to join a company, fail badly, retreat to school, then try to apply at higher levels. He had 3 masters but couldn't solve a simple engineering question.
Needless to say it was a no.
Please tell me you told him to learn to code
One of his degrees was MS in CS! And he couldn’t explain polymorphism. It was fucking amazing.
At this point I so decline all PhD ABT resumes (all but thesis) which I see all the damn time.
All but thesis?
So, you worked as some professor's bitch for two years, taught some classes as a fill in, and didn't actually complete your own research? Doesn't seem like a PhD without a thesis is... anything.
It is about 60% of the resumes I see with PhD these days. Just means they couldn’t find a job after grad school in my opinion.
But yes. On a resume it is listed as PhD ABT.
Couldn’t explain polymorphism? I’m guessing he never played a magic user in Dungeons and Dragons.
Probably some is people working informally, paid under the table too.
I wish I could find one of those. If I took a part time job the paycheck would be taxed into oblivion. Just not worth it.
If you didn’t live so far away I’d let you mow my lawn for $25.
Lawns! Tony could probably get him steady work in the mens room down at the bus station. He could make his own hours and the revenue would be completely untaxed.
I suspect that number is very large.
To pay people in cash the employer has to have the cash. Lot's of them do not.
Could be "self-employed", cash only.
One thing I've noticed, and this may or may not be related, YMMV, is that the numbers of "homeless" people, particularly men, standing asking for handouts at intersections and interchange ramps seems to have increased over the past decade.
There's also being your own "uber" without being a part of Uber or Lyft. People have made money using their cars as jitneys on Chicago's South Side for decades. I'm sure they're cash only, and who knows what is reported come tax time.
People can make shitloads working a sign. Think about it. Street lights cycle every two or three minutes or so, right? That’s twenty to thirty opportunities an hour to ask drivers for cash. A buck per cycle and they’re doing better than lots of people with a real job. Five bucks per cycle and they’re making lawyer money. It goes up from there. All tax free. That’s why I never give any of those fuckers one red cent. They’re probably taking home more money than me.
If they make a reasonable living they are probably working harder than you, standing by the curb 8 hrs a day in all sorts of weather. But typically they live with just enough money to get by, which might be $15 k on top of welfare or SS.
Could be “self-employed”, cash only.
Given that 9 out of 10 businesses fail, I'm not convinced of that.
Who are all these people who were making $40k-$90k a year and are suddenly making ends meet "self-employed" cash only. (edm musician?)
I mean, I follow a LOT of youtubers with pretty big followings and they will admit on their channels that Youtube doesn't pay the bill. Yes, most of them have a spouse that's working a 9-5.
I was actually thinking more along the lines of the professional panhandlers and other no-quite-so-legal gigs (jitneys, drug dealing). Maybe I just grew up in the wrong neighborhoods
Wouldn't be too hard if you have some skills. You could easily make $40k a year doing odd carpentry jobs and such for cash.
I don't doubt that there are a good number of people like you describe. But I suspect a lot of the "out of the labor market" people have always been working in the informal economy. I know several people who did that for at least a good chunk of their working lives.
I’m sure OnlyFans pays better. If they’re hot enough and willing to ‘do things’ on camera. Possibly with one, or multiple friends.
Probably some is people working informally, paid under the table too.
That's where illegal immigration comes in. I don't know if there are many native-born/citizens that do that.
There’s some 50/50 situations with mom and pops. Like getting paid half in cash with only half the work hours reported on an actual payroll check. But I imagine COVID nuked half of them.
From what I’ve seen working grocery, the gig economy is taking up some of the slack, but I can’t imagine it’s sustainable. Somewhere along the line there needs to be people with money to keep the gigs coming.
I also live in an area where developments full of $500,000+ units are constantly going up, and I have no idea who the fuck can afford these things.
Perhaps it’s a more spaced out “ghost town” scenario like in China? Building just to build.
The help situation in grocery is just pathetic. There has to be a money faucet running somewhere. I feel like just out of sight, around every corner, someone’s spraying it from a hose to everyone but the idiots who still get up and go to work everyday.
"$500,000+ units are constantly going up, and I have no idea who the fuck can afford these things."
I think the same thing when I see expensive new vehicles. I don't know anyone who can afford the payments on a $90,000 pickup truck.
I read a book once about this kind of thing happening. What was the name of it again…?
Who could possibly foreseen that paying people not to work might cause them to not work?!
^Bingo
https://www.cato.org/study/myth-american-income-inequality
People in the bottom quintile of earners (who mostly don’t work) make almost the same as in the 2nd to bottom quintile (who mostly work), after government transfer payments and paying taxes. You’d be a fool to get a job to move up a quintile.
And many men in that situation are invisible in the stats because they're living illegally in their baby momma's subsidized housing and eating off her SNAP card. Many such men are virtually unemployable, so "moving up" by getting a job isn't even available to them.
I think there IS a "silver bullet" explanation:
Employers have no loyalty to employees and see them all as equally replaceable. Therefore employees have no loyalty to employers and have no need to perform beyond basic expectations.
The ultimate expression of this is checking out of the workforce to pursue non-traditional revenue streams.
TL:DR You can't fire me, I quit.
TL:DR You can’t fire me, I quit.
*holds fist in air*
Right on, man!
*plugs in Tesla*
It's Hard Out Here For Pimp.
We just saw employers literally offer up employees for involuntary medical expeimentation
Reason: "More and more Americans are lazy, entitled bums, but we can fix that by importing low cost slave labor from third world nations!"
It's like Southern slavery all over again.
Yes, it is, and that's why contention between the "parties" over border security and immigration policy is a sham. ALL of our rulers want massive illegal entry.
That's not "our rulers", that is what Americans themselves are voting for. Politicians just give the American voter what he wants.
You know who else imported a lot of slave labor?
Tyson?
Are they all still trying to beat Elden Ring?
This is why we need the Green New Deal, to take care of those who can't or choose not to work.
"to take care of those who can’t or choose not to work"
The Bureau is about employment, isn't it? Work is an entirely different kettle of fish. We tend to conflate the two. I remember mother getting angry when I said she didn't work. I meant to say she didn't hold a job. In fact she spent the day working around the house, cleaning, cooking, sewing, gardening, caring for children, pets, and her 'men friends.'
Think of all the carbon they're not putting into the air by not riding the bus to work every day.
Those 1000 watt PC power supplies that the male workforce dropouts love to run constantly aren't exactly 0 carbon.
Is that the deal where people who refuse to work are processed into Soylent Green?
Seems to me it's a problem of incentives, and that increasing immigration is just a way to temporarily avoid it.
Beyond the obvious steps of the government reducing handouts and employers increasing wages/benefits and improving working conditions, our society may need to reconsider some of the changes we've made to the incentive structure that working-age men face:
https://dalrock.wordpress.com/2014/01/03/more-ominous-than-a-strike/
Employers increesing wages only artifially increese inflation.
Most of the wage/price increese is due to goverment hand outs. It is no surprise to anyone with a brain that being on welfare pays ~$14/hour while all of the Marxist trash are saying fight for 15. It subversive to its core
What kind of jobs are going unfilled? My guess is it's the 3D jobs - dirty, dangerous and degrading. Lower paid, too. I doubt corporate law firms or wall street banks have trouble filling their positions.
If Americans are increasingly finding ways to live their lives without entering into the subservience of employment, that's a plus for independence, autonomy and freedom. The ideal of Jefferson and Smith.
Where I work there's a system administration job that they just can't fill. Few people apply to it, and of them even fewer are qualified. Then when they manage to hire someone they rarely last for more than a couple weeks if they show up to work at all. That's not a 3D job, is it?
“That’s not a 3D job, is it?”
It is if it’s done properly. A lot of work is challenging, pleasant and fulfilling, and people do it for free, without the benefit of a boss constantly looking over your shoulder.
Bill Bryson wrote a nice book, At Home, (if memory serves) where he detailed what country parsons in Victorian England have contributed to society while they weren’t tending their flocks. Jack Russel terriers, Icelandic dictionaries, and many other scientific and cultural pursuits.
"...It is if it’s done properly. A lot of work is challenging, pleasant and fulfilling, and people do it for free, without the benefit of a boss constantly looking over your shoulder..."
Can you eat "challanging", jackass?
why don’t they last? is it so horrible they leave? It sounds like the job sucks.
My guess is it’s the 3D jobs – dirty, dangerous and degrading. Lower paid, too.
Cue Mike Rowe to point out all the high paying “dirty, dangerous and degrading” jobs.
If Americans are increasingly finding ways to live their lives without entering into the subservience of employment, that’s a plus for independence, autonomy and freedom.
I agree 100%. How's the EDM youtube musician thing going?
Not to sound too out of the loop, but what is EDM YouTube musician? Please tell me it has something to do with electro discharge machining
Wow, I know something another commenter doesn't.
Electronic Dance Music.
Oh my. I looked it up. I will give them electronic, but no to dance and music
"How’s the EDM youtube musician thing going?"
Smash that like button and find out. I tend to stick to videos of nude Russian ladies doing yoga or chess commentary.
Hook us up with some nude chess commentary links.
You may get your wish. After Magnus accused Hans of cheating, and Elon Musk tweeted that Hans may have received messages from a chess engine through beads inserted in Hans' anus, Hans, the curly headed 19 year old GM, offered to play in the nude.

Something as basic as morse code. But there is just accusation, no evidence.
I would rather lose.
So the Marxist favors a shit work ethic, and views those people in the trades as lowly savages that don't know what's best for them.

Employment and work are different things. Don't conflate the two.
You clearly have no background in what you say.
I make up for it with my frontground, if you know what I mean.
Like all retard Marxists you claim different definitions for the Same word to make yourself feel smart.
I leave you with two easy to understand words
Kill yourself
Exactly the sort of response I expect from someone clearly without background.
In fact, the asshole trueman does not 'make up' with it at all; the piece of shit has been spouting bullshit for years:

I’m an engineering professor. Three observations:
1. As they say, engineering is indoor work, no heavy lifting. Companies call me directly to say they’re having trouble finding applicants.
2. When I ask our 4th year engineering students how their job searches are going, about half have not taken any steps like talking to the career placement office, and multiple students have told me they “haven’t decided whether they want to work”.
3. We have two openings for engineering professor positions, which isn’t dirty or dangerous. (Degrading is a matter of opinion). Out of 25 applicants so far, none (literally zero) grew up in the US, none (literally zero) have a BS degree from a US university, and less than half even are even in the US.
I got the impression from the article that is was the lower paid, immigrant friendly, jobs that were going unfilled.
There's a similar trend in China, "Tang Ping, lying flat" which young people are following. They find the intense competition, low rewards and degradation of the work place so unpleasant they have begun to rebel against the norms of their parents and lead a more leisurely and unmaterialistic life. The communists are against it, of course, and try to ban any mention of it.
Another interesting trend is the world wide increase in young couples deciding against having or raising children. Not quite world wide; Africa is about the only bright spot and its population is set to double over the century.
I can verify the trouble finding qualified applicants (coming from a consulting firm). A lot of the applicants we get have no schooling or background in the environmental, geology, or engineering fields. They're just not hire-able for what we do. We usually hire people who've gone through one of the STEM programs as they tend to have an idea of what do to here in the real world. Liberal arts baristas? Not so much.
Once, if companies needed skilled work, they would take the time and effort to do the training themselves, through apprenticeship programs and the like. Now they foist this training onto the backs of universities and students and complain about their lack of suitability. Yet another reason why the young are sick of the workplace and their role as employees.
We actually do take the time to train; however, there is too much involved in geology and engineering to have an apprenticeship with a company. That's why the STEM programs exist, and have for decades. It takes at least four years at a properly accredited institution to learn what one needs to know before even hitting the workplace. Then, if someone wants to be licensed as a PE, it takes another four years working under another PE plus two rigorous exams (FE and PE).
The problems with universities isn't the STEM programs (from medicine to geology to engineering), it's the crappy liberal arts programs that do nothing to add to knowledge, yet are required to work in some places.
"however, there is too much involved in geology and engineering to have an apprenticeship with a company."
It takes money, time and effort to specialize. Expecting the students and universities to put in the money, time and effort while the companies sit back and wait to reap the benefits seems unfair and a reason why the young are growing disenchanted with what the world of employment has on offer.
"it’s the crappy liberal arts programs that do nothing to add to knowledge, yet are required to work in some places."
That's simply untrue. Queer studies didn't exist before the 70's and now it's woven into the thread of every aspect of our public life and issues. Just look at Reason or FOX or CNN or whatever. Tranny toilets, for god's sake! We'd never mention them were it not for students beavering away in academia back then.
"It takes 4 years to learn at an accredited institution"
No it rucking doesn't. I was well-versed in algebra and some beginning calculus straight out of high school. God forbid your companies put out skills test to see who's intelligent enough to train in the first place.
I don't have a degree because when I was younger I was too distracted to do homework, and the geniuses who run the institutions decided homework was important instead of just pure tests of knowledge/skill. Why should it be though?
And I still remember all of it, I've got an elephants memory. Plus pretty decent grammar and spelling (fast internet typing notwithstanding)
The people you could train up are out there, you're all just too lazy to do the mild amount of work of vetting and testing people.
I once saw an online debate about calculus that went on for like 17 pages. One of the guys posting fucking installs boilers for a living
The people are out there, y'all just lazy and entitled
*the people HIRING out there
In Computer Science departments I've seen an unusual problem which is it is one of the rare fields that a Ph.D will get you more money working in industry than in academics. I've seen this with other engineering work as well, but don't know how widespread it is there.
But in CS, a Ph.D in most applicable areas can do quite well in industry working in their specific field. So, CS seems to be having a particularly difficult time getting people to enter into the academy.
Engineering jobs are also high paying, so people can work for a while, save a pile of cash, retire early, buy a van, buy health insurance on one of the Obamacare exchanges at a steep discount (since they are now "low income"), tour the country in their van, and become a blogger.
Like actor Les Tremayne did in the 70’s? He had that Winnebago that was tricked out with a special bowling ball with lights on it. So Billy could contact the Elders for, advice.
Unless you see it more as "contributing to society" or "taking responsibility for your own well-being", as opposed to "being subservient to an employer".
"Unless you see it more as “contributing to society” or “taking responsibility for your own well-being”
The article was about people increasingly not seeking employment. It's a mistake to conflate contributing or taking responsibility with employment. Others here are conflating work with employment. Another mistake.
"The article was about people increasingly not seeking employment. It’s a mistake to conflate contributing or taking responsibility with employment. Others here are conflating work with employment. Another mistake."
Care to translate that from lefty cant to English?
"...My guess is it’s the 3D jobs – dirty, dangerous and degrading. Lower paid, too. I doubt corporate law firms or wall street banks have trouble filling their positions..."

You and everyone else not getting paid 'minimum wage' is paid what the market determines your efforts to be worth.
Stuff your '3D' bullshit up your as.
“Inflation-adjusted average wage growth also jumped for a while there, increasing by at least 4 percent annualized for 12 consecutive months.”
One year of significant wage growth, during the period when the labor force was artificially constricted by COVID (and the government's response thereto), hardly makes up for the decades of anemic wage growth that preceded that year, much less the decrease in real wages that has followed it.
Here's a scene from The Woman King that describes how to deal with this situation, perfectly.
Not a lot of diversity in the cast of that movie.
Let’s examine this. Look at Obamacare first. If a young person makes a certain percentage below median income their healthcare is subsidized. Take it further to housing (every new dense development near public transportation has 20-25percent units subsidized), food, energy, internet, transportation and public school babysitting.
Why would anyone bust their ass, at the margins making 5-50k more, to buy a condo/house pay for food or healthcare, when a quarter of their neighbors are working a part time barista gig at the coffee shop and playing video games most of the day? The living quarters are the same, except the subsidized live a free time leisurely lifestyle.
This is why Hispanics are going Republican and white Antifa dudes and trustifarians are democrats.
The reason is the lack of pride. No gives a shit when the gub'ment unemployment and disability checks keep rolling in. Who needs pride when you can spend every waking hour complaining about the immigrants who stole your job.
Now I am genuinely sympathetic about that back that prevents you from going back to your backbreaking job, but you don't have to cop an entitlement attitude over it. My friend was paraplegic with the use of only a few fingers in one hand, but still managed to finish his degree and get a job in IT, while still getting a bit extra cash with a home based business. If anyone had the right to whine about his lot in life and just sit around waiting for a gub'ment check, it was him. But he had pride and didn't. He still got that check because he genuinely needed it to pay for care, but he still got a job and still had his business. Which is a hell of a lot more than these whiners are doing.
"The reason is the lack of pride. No gives a shit when the gub’ment unemployment and disability checks keep rolling in. Who needs pride when you can spend every waking hour complaining about the immigrants who stole your job..."
According to TDS-addled Brandyshit here, it has nothing to do with us (taxpayers) paying people to sit on their asses.
It takes doctorate-level stupidity to make that claim, but TDS-addled Brandyshit is up to the challenge!
"Why would anyone bust their ass"
Conformity to social norms has been a big motivator. With increasing social fragmentation the desire to follow these norms goes by the wayside. Voting for any of the political parties that rule us won't change that.
According to TDS-addled trueman here, it has nothing to do with us (taxpayers) paying people to sit on their asses.
It takes doctorate-level stupidity to make that claim, but TDS-addled trueman is up to the challenge!
I would be delighted to trade white antifa types for non criminal Hispanics any day. We could have a program where they apply and are screened. On our end, we send some guys out in vans and grab the wokies off the street that are the most problematic.
Non criminal Hispanic types? What is that, a joke?
Mexico's drug cartels love the 4th amendment even more than you do.
Avoid hiring antifa types. Even white ones.

An oldie but a goodie:
https://www.salon.com/2010/03/16/hipsters_food_stamps_pinched/
In the John Waters-esque sector of northwest Baltimore -- equal parts kitschy, sketchy, artsy and weird -- Gerry Mak and Sarah Magida sauntered through a small ethnic market stocked with Japanese eggplant, mint chutney and fresh turmeric. After gathering ingredients for that evening's dinner, they walked to the cash register and awaited their moments of truth.
"I have $80 bucks left!" Magida said. "I'm so happy!"
"I have $12," Mak said with a frown.
The two friends weren't tabulating the cash in their wallets but what remained of the monthly allotment on their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program debit cards, the official new term for what are still known colloquially as food stamps.
Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate, had been installing museum exhibits for a living until the recession caused arts funding -- and her usual gigs -- to dry up. She applied for food stamps last summer, and since then she's used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away.
"I'm eating better than I ever have before," she told me. "Even with food stamps, it's not like I'm living large, but it helps."
Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.
"I'm sort of a foodie, and I'm not going to do the 'living off ramen' thing," he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he'd prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. "I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it's great that you can get anything."
The author is an idiot.
We already knew that about Welchy-boy.
NYC Mayor Adams declares state of emergency after 17,000 migrants spark shelter 'crisis'
Poor baby, he has to deal with 17,000 in a city of 8,000,000. Maybe he should wonder what places like Ajo, Arizona and Eagle Pass, Texas go through.
De o rats are incapable of empathy, or insight.
Shelter crisis? What 'shelter crisis'? I'm told that immigrants don't use any government services. They melt quietly into society, enriching us and adding to the economy.
Yeah, don't they operate food trucks or something?
Delicious food trucks.
Every human who sets foot in the country uses government services. You use them from the moment you took your first drink of clean water.
Stop being so paranoid that some brown person is getting something he doesn't deserve. What do you deserve? What have you done but whine about the cost of the things you get automatically by being lucky enough in your choice of birthplace?
The point is who is a net payer-in and who is a net mooch. Red state white fucks take the most and young workers pay in the most. It is known.
"Every human who sets foot in the country uses government services. You use them from the moment you took your first drink of clean water..."
Bullshit assertions from steaming piles of lefty shit are neither arguments or evidence.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
Red state white fucks take the most..
Racist fuckstick.
Nobody believes your bullshit.
By nobody you mean those people who actually believe that the big problem in the country right now is drag queens reading books, yes?
No, he means all who are not deluded lefty shits like you.
So you respond with more bullshit. The sad thing is you think your bullshit is clever. Nobody agrees.
Smug and stupid; what a way to go through life. Bet his mommy tells him he's smart at family gatherings.
She lies.
Tony, not being a worthless layabout, or a benefits cheat, I pay for that shit. Unlike you. You should give all your shit to some ‘brown people’ as you call them. Then leave America forever, and take THEIR place back in their country of origin.
Everybody wins!
...rethinking Social Security's disability insurance...
Do you really think there are a few people collecting disability insurance who are actually capable of working?
Didn't Reason run a story a few years back about a doctor and a lawyer in Kentucky faking applications? Seems they were both going to be prosecuted in a high profile case, but very few of the people they "helped" were cut off by the government, since the GDP of the county would have cratered.
Welch uses some really weird numbers to promote his claims. Why would he say:
"and yet the labor force participation rate languishes at a miserable 62.3 percent"
This is a strange statistic to use. Why? It includes retirees & students. A useful statistic would be the labor force participation rate for 25 to 54 year olds. Prime working age. Excludes retirees. Excludes students. How's this compare? 82.7%. Almost up to pre-pandemic 83%. Record high was 84.5% in 2000.
https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNU01300060
Excellent call out.
There are other chickenshit statistical lies going on too.
For example, look at the chart. Note they go by numbers of people, not by percentages of the population. There were less than half the number of people in America in 1948 when the chart begins, so you can flatten those curves significantly.
Also, note it's "Males 25-54", and we're all supposed to ignore the fact that women almost universally didn't work in 1948 and almost universally are expected to work in the 21st century. That's a pretty large factor to consider. I have a friend with a newborn baby. His wife makes way more money right now, so he does most of the childcare and isn't looking for a full time job while she's still an infant. That sort of thing statistically never happened for the entire first half of the chart.
I could go on. And on. The foundational premises for all of this have to be really fucking shaky if that's the best data they can find.
Did you really expect anything better from Welch? He was sucking some serious democrat cock on Bill Maher’s show some weeks back.
I don't expect anything better from any of these writers.
I popped on here a few years back because there was a well written, well researched teardown of a supreme court case. Every once in a while something like that would pop up.
It has been getting progressively worse ever since. Pun intended.
I swear, these people need to get out of the swamp and make some actual, human friends in the real world. They've been so surrounded by the internet-first, extremely intolerant, leftists that have taken over the bulk of mainstream journalism that they don't even know how transparently awful they are. Not just TDS, but all of their prescribed talking points. They don't even bother to try, it's like they are 50 centers, getting paid by the post, and their handlers never bother to actually check the quality of the work itself.
"the fact that women almost universally didn’t work in 1948 "
They did work in 1948. They had jobs too. It was perfectly normal for women to hold down a job after school. The secretarial pools were filled with women. It was also normal for them to quit after marriage, unless they were nurses or teachers etc.
Nice try, asshole.
Yes, as the post WWII government (non-productive) sector grew by leaps and bounds, it kept women working.
As the troops returned, the female participation in the productive sectors if the economy fell from 7% to 2%; offset by the 'jobs' mentioned above.
So, yes, they were 'working' in jobs largely reserved for woman:
https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/66C7D7FD7F6424DF40625E913DDC788F/S0022050718000323a.pdf/div-class-title-the-rise-and-fall-of-female-labor-force-participation-during-world-war-ii-in-the-united-states-div.pdf - pg 704
"That sort of thing statistically never happened for the entire first half of the chart. "
What are you talking about? Couples with one job holder and one home maker were absolutely the norm in 1948. Couples both holding down jobs is a relatively recent phenomena. (Unless you count slavery, where not only the husband and wife 'held a job' but whatever children they bore did too.
"...What are you talking about? Couples with one job holder and one home maker were absolutely the norm in 1948..."
Compared to:
"..They (women) did work in 1948. They had jobs too. It was perfectly normal for women to hold down a job after school. The secretarial pools were filled with women. It was also normal for them to quit after marriage, unless they were nurses or teachers etc..."
As a lying pile of lefty shit, it's certain you'll come up with some baffle-gab regarding how work doesn't equal employment to explain your contradictions, and we're all waiting for them.
James Brown, the hardest working man in show business, Republican:
I've worked on jobs with my feet and my hands
But all the work I did was for the other man
And now we demands a chance
To do things for ourselves
we tired of beating our heads against the wall
And working for someone else
Say it loud,
I'm black and I'm proud
Help yourself, but don't expect me to pay for it until you deliver value to me.
Wages are not keeping up with inflation, working conditions suck and benefits are disappearing. Muh Free Market theory tells me that such deteriorating incentives make it less likely for people to want to work.
Wages have not kept pace with productivity for a generation, entirely by design. When you push for the burden of the cost of government to fall all the lower classes, take away the right to unionize, encourage an underclass of migrant workers with no rights, and do all the other things that "pro-business" elites want, for little more reason than to line their pockets with more yacht money, don't be surprised if people opt out of the game that's been deliberately rigged against them.
Of course the sniveling fools here think the solution is to further cut the welfare state. Really? So to solve the "work ethic" problem, we're going to force retirees into the workforce? Are they going to pick strawberries going unpicked by migrants you insist we keep out for no reason other than racism? Welfare basically doesn't exist anymore for able-bodied people. All that money goes to old people.
And even that your masters want to pillage for their coke and whore fund.
"Wages have not kept pace with productivity for a generation, entirely by design..."
Bullshit assertions from steaming piles of lefty shit are neither arguments or evidence.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
Welfare basically doesn’t exist anymore for able-bodied people.
LOL
“take away the right to unionize,”
Who did this?
Republicans of course. Do you not pay attention to the policy actions of the political coalition you so slavishly support?
Gee that is odd as people are still unionizing.
I think free government stuff like housing assistance, food stamps, free utility assistance, free cell phones. free medical insurance are keeping more people from working. You see people that want to unionize already have jobs and are working.
Another thing keeping people from working is high taxes. Why work if the government gets more than you do?
"Republicans of course..."
Bullshit assertions from steaming piles of lefty shit are neither arguments or evidence.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
Two sentences, two examples of bullshit. You’re on a role today.
Hey faggot, where are people prevented from u ionizing?
If your plan for the future involves collectively organizing yourself as an easily replaceable drone, then you’re probably not looking at a future of more and more money.
I have a theory. Could it be that laziness is contagious?
Ensured laziness by Gov-Gun Theft?? Yeah; You peg it spot on.
+100000000000000
Laziness did seem to run in certain families where I grew up, and the people there were all of the same race, white. We had three and four generations or welfare recipients all from the same families. They actually would brag about it.
Welch seems to ignore at least a partial vindication of the "restrictionist" crowd in this experiment. When Covid lockdowns and government handouts induced huge labor shortages, certain industries had no choice but to raise wages. I saw fast food places advertise shifts that pay 18-21 dollars per hour. And lot of the workers who left are immigrants.
The popular notion was that with so many vacancies, employees had a rare upper hand over the employers, so they either shopped around more, went to better paying jobs, or just stayed put at home. But when pandemic aid ended, some people (immigrants) had no choice but to head back.
We have 80-90 million immigrant population, more than 3 times the entire population Canada. But we have accept even more immigrants every year do address job vacancies? And if these people don't want to take it, we just let in more and more until they're filled?
This argument is losing persuasion for the electorate. Nancy Pelosi was derided for claiming that we should tolerate tsunami of migration because we need people to pick up crops. Americans don't work these jobs because they're seasonal (not a career), has no upside, and often entail terrible working conditions. It was always untenable to suggest that we essentially import the underclass, and subject them to crap jobs to essentially make conglomerates richer.
Less than 1% of the immigration population works in farm. Manufacturing is on the perpetual decline. 90% of the 1.7 million Americans who would have arrived sans Trump would have sought conventional retail, service sector, or office jobs. It would take them 10,20 years to be doctors and scientists. Meanwhile they would add numbers to an increasingly Marxist democrat party, and the cost of living imposed by them would more than offset the price of cheap milk achieved by some illegal alien working at a heavily subsidized dairy farm.
there's a research paper I can't link that explains men who dropout of the workforce
Summary: A number of recent papers by economists document and try to explain the decline in labor force participation of prime-age men over time. Alan Krueger found that health conditions, disability, and the rise of opioid prescriptions may be important contributing factors.4 John Coglianese suggested that much of the decline in prime-age men’s labor force participation is due to the increase in men who temporarily leave the labor force. He credited this phenomenon to the rise in men living with parents and to a wealth effect for married/cohabiting men due to the increase in female earnings over time.5 Some economists have suggested that trade and automation are the most responsible for the decline over the last twenty years or so, with increased participation in disability insurance programs, the real value of the minimum wage, and the rise in incarceration and the growth in the number of people with prison records also having an impact.6 Jay Stewart found that a small fraction of men accounted for the majority of years that men spent not working during 1987 to 1997. He found that a substantial proportion of nonworkers lived with family members and received financial support from them.7
Okay, now do the population as a whole. Because while the out-of-labor-force rate for "working age" men might have risen from 0.5% in the mid 60s to 2% in 2016 (seriously, it should have been a red flag that the numbers weren't per capita. That's a big ol' red flag that they're trying to making things seem worse then they are) the out-of-labor-force rate for "working age" women has dropped far more then that tiny rise.
As far as the fear-mongering that school age teens aren't working, what the fuck? This whole article is nothing but fear mongering over an obsession that people should live to work, and that anything less is a sign of moral failure.
"As far as the fear-mongering that school age teens aren’t working, what the fuck? This whole article is nothing but fear mongering over an obsession that people should live to work, and that anything less is a sign of moral failure."
Bullshit.

"It takes money, time and effort to specialize. Expecting the students and universities to put in the money, time and effort while the companies sit back and wait to reap the benefits seems unfair and a reason why the young are growing disenchanted with what the world of employment has on offer."
This is so unicorn-farting stupid, it's hard to believe that anyone capable of using a keyboard could type this; it demonstrates a complete lack of understanding regarding the economics of running a for-profit enterprise and equally idiotic assumptions regarding who gains what from which activity.
We'll see if an explanation can be simple enough for ignoramus here to understand:
1. Companies do not exist to pay workers or even employ anyone at all; they exist to make a profit for the owners. To exist requires capital, and no one invests in a company other than to make money (and if you, jackass, have a retirement fund, that includes you).
2. If doing so requires hiring people, the company will do so at the lowest possible cost. Always.
3. If anyone wants to work in a highly-paid job, it is up to them to get educated at their expense to show prospective employers both the ability to make money for the owners and the dedication required for that field of work.
Regarding employment, all else flows from those three principles, but you have to both understand those and accept that there is a reality and live there, not in some fantasy-land.
My neighbor moved in next door 16 years ago. They have a son, then 19 years old who had just graduated high school. The son, now 35 has always lived with his parents and has never had a full time job. When I asked him why he doesn't work he told me, what for? He mentioned his parents do not mind him living at their house and have never pressed him to get a job. When asked about a career or supporting himself, he says he does not need one. The only labor he has ever done are odd jobs around the neighborhood like cutting grass, trimming bushes and cleaning up. This pays for gas (his father bought him a truck) and for a few beers. He told me when his parents pass away, he will inherit the house and all other assets. This guy is not physically or mentally impaired.
Heard of the cuckoo? While the real men have left their wives at home to go to work, this guy is hanging the neighborhood 'trimming bushes.' Not physically or mentally impaired, indeed.
Care to translate that from assholish lefty cant to English, or should we just accept that you're a lying pile of lefty shit?
Guessing the latter.
This guy is not [...] mentally impaired.
Sort of. But if, at 35, you are willing to free-load off your parents, you and they have problems.
At HS graduation, I got the word that living at 'home' was going to require some level of room and board costs. Not punitive, but it took a job to pay it.
This guy suffers from poor parents; I didn't.
No worries.. Our [WE] mob GUNS will save us...
Exactly what selfish greedy criminalistic lefties believe.
"[WE]'ll just send out our GUN-squad to every producer and rob them blind while we sit on our *sses and complain. Yeah; that'll fix it.."
Humorously don't seem to realize they're literally destroying their very source of a wealthy life. Eventually the [WE] mob GUN-squad is going to 'KILL' off producers and any desire to create... The LAZY will eat the WORKERS to death..
Because................... GUNS don't create human resources... And "Government" isn't anything but a monopoly of GUN-Force controlled by [WE] mobs.
I remember meeting someone from Hungary who was there working in the days before communism fell. He told me everyone stole everything they could lay their hands on.
As a steaming pile of lefty shit, you would. Fuck off and die, asshole.
That's the future you want for the US.
Interesting; I could see that happening. 🙂
"I remember meeting someone from Hungary who was there working in the days before communism fell. He told me everyone stole everything they could lay their hands on"

It's not a loss of work ethic. It's a loss of pay ethic. Look at how incomes haven't kept up with inflation for decades. People are sick of paying the corporations to work for the corporations. It's a slightly different version of owing your soul to the company store. You may as well not work for what ends up in your pocket. You can mow lawns and make more. My former neighbor bought a bucket and a squeegee and made a good living.
Supply and demand. If the worker supply isn't showing up raise your wages without taking it out of your customers to cause more inflation or you're just doing the same wheel spin that's been going on. The top is too bloated.
"It’s not a loss of work ethic. It’s a loss of pay ethic. Look at how incomes haven’t kept up with inflation for decades."
Bullshit.
Oh, he is right that "incomes haven't kept up with inflation".
That's in part due to globalization, in part to government-mandated benefits, in part due to the import of cheap third world labor, and in part to workplace regulations: all progressive policies.
But Americans chose those policies, and now they have to live with the consequences.
You are the quintessence of the greedy, entitled American.
Most people around the world would kill for getting a US-style job with US-style benefits at US-style rates.
Those workers will show up if the alternative is starvation.
The fact is that, thanks to globalization, US workers now compete with a global workforce. If you are no more skilled than the average Indian or Chinese factory worker, you can't expect to earn more than they do or have better working conditions than they have.
"Those workers will show up if the alternative is starvation."
That is also the quintessence of the greedy, entitled American. But the ones who are paying people to be the working poor.
Libertarianism is not pro-slavery even if it makes a show of paying something.
People who have no work ethic are called dependents. They depend on everyone else for their existence and don’t accept responsibility. It’s always someone else’s fault. A totally sad and pathetic means to an end with no pride and self esteem present.
And this is exactly analogous to plummeting birthrates.
First of all, they are connected. The tie between those who pay for the social network (workers) and those who benefit, means that we are making it hard for people to have families.
And work is like the birthrate, once it goes down it is very difficult to raise.
If Biden ever paid attention to what he says (I have 2 words "Made in America") he would realize that his 30X30 plan will destroy farming if nothing else does "Many conservationists pointed out, however, that, according to the America the Beautiful report, farming, grazing and logging could count as conservation under the 30% designation if the land is managed with “the long-term health and sustainability of natural systems” in mind. While many support this approach, others strongly disagree. Andy Kerr, an Oregon-based conservationist, said: “Real conservation doesn’t have room for commercial logging and grazing.” These lands are not dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity but instead to extractive commodities, he explained."
Ask yourself: How has Biden's conservation of our energy been workin for ya"
"And this is exactly analogous to plummeting birthrates."
Think again. Africa, the poorest continent on the planet has the highest birthrates. It's essentially the only region that will see growth this century. The rest of the world will stagnate or decline.
Africa is poor because it's a socialist shithole. And Africa has high birthrates because it is poor.
Oh, don't worry: as more and more Western nations turn into impoverished shitholes, their birthrates will go up too.
"Africa is poor because it’s a socialist shithole. "
What part of the planet isn't a socialist shithole?
Here is a handy map that may help you:
https://www.heritage.org/index/heatmap
So the entire world is Socialist. Why pick on poor Africa? What has she ever done to you?
Are you color blind? Africa is bright red = no economic freedom. The US, Europe, and Australia are mostly green = high economic freedom.
"high economic freedom."
Nonsense. The government routinely taxes earnings of hard working people and redistributes it to the undeserving. Right out of The Communist Manifesto, by Marx and Engels.
Well, Western countries have adopted limited aspects of socialism; African countries have adopted more. The more aspects of socialism are found in a country, the poorer and worse off its inhabitants are.
"African countries have adopted more. "
Nonsense. Socialism requires a strong centralized state like you find in US, France, China etc. African countries, for the most part, don't have this, though some exceptions do exist, like Egypt, home to the world's first centralized state some 5000 years previously. Bottom line if you want to avoid state interference in your affairs, Africa is a better bet than the rest of the planet.
And calling Africa for what it is--a socialist shithole--isn't "picking on it", it's simply stating a fact.
Africa is projected to be the only region of the world that will see population growth. The rest of the planed will dwindle of stagnate. The socialist shithole will be the place to be. My brother in law is thinking about opening a branch of his bio-tech business there. He's interested in the future doesn't share your irrational hatred.
That is because Africa is dirt poor and disease ridden. It's also because much of Africa suffers from the "resource curse".
Populations in the rest of the world are stagnating because they are doing economically well.
Where have I expressed "hatred" for anybody? I'm just stating facts: Africa is socialist and it is doing poorly economically.
Good luck to your brother: Africa is not only a shithole, with a few exceptions, African nations have some of the most racist and bigoted populations on the planet. That's another reason Africa is not going to do well in the future.
"Where have I expressed “hatred” for anybody? "
Here. Calling someone's home is a vile insult. But you seem to think the entire world is a socialist shithole, including the country where you choose to make your home.
"Populations in the rest of the world are stagnating because they are doing economically well."
South Korea is declining in population and had been doing well until recently. Now it's not doing so well. The US is not doing well and is either not growing now or is slated to stagnate. There is inflation and a debt of astonishing proportions, largely to China.
It’s shocking how many people have totally unrealistic expectations these days about what they can get away with on a new job and how much they want. We posted a part-time job to supervise kids at an after-school recreation program. The posted pay was $18 an hour, which isn’t peanuts. Applicant after applicant after applicant would send in their resume, but in the interview they’d state they couldn’t do it for “under $25″… one person said they wanted $30! This is a part-time afternoon job in a city with a relatively low cost of living! It isn’t meant to be a career. Then, five or six people asked if it could be a remote job. NO! This is watching kids in a gym… have you ever tried to watch children remotely? It doesn’t work! Half the time kids run amok when you’re just five feet away from them. People need to get their demands in check. I blame the government for all that free money during COVID and for forcing people to stay home – now everyone wants to stay home and get more free money.
" This is watching kids in a gym…"
In a gym? Those kids have no business being in a gym. They should be a home collecting free money like everyone else with any sense.
“Half the time kids run amok when you’re just five feet away from them.”
Yes. That plus the risk and liability of being responsible for other people’s kids as they run amok makes the job really unattractive.
You know what's also totally unrealistic? Doing your parental duty by stuffing your kids into an after-school recreation program staffed by part-time people.
If you have kids, do your f*cking job and raise them yourself.
Ever heard of parents having jobs, you twit? When I was a kid, my parents worked and I just went home and watched TV until my parents came home. I would have loved taking part in an after-school program.
Yes. I'm I'm saying that parents need to make a choice: double income no kids, or making time for your kids.
Why am I not surprised.
But how can families have SUVs and McMansions if they don't drop off the kids at day care??

Some people value their time more than their money. Who am I to judge?
At the same time, if we’re going to tax people, why not make people work, too?
"The effective 2020–21 border-closure." Is he high?
This will work itself out. Those spoiled by the jobs being there whenever they want will get the wake up call soon. Fed is determined to drive UE higher. Government policy doing nothing to encourage work only more transfer payments.
When the work is scarce those scarcely working now will be the ones who can't get hired.
Americans Are Losing Their Work Ethic.
And resorting to 3rd party Gov-Guns for a living.
The very foundation of every failure of a nation.
Gov-Guns don't create human resources.
Something criminalistic minds of communism and socialism never want to LEARN.
Years ago, I learned that the more tasks I completed, the more opportunities there were for somebody to find fault with my work. With some experience, I learned that I could choose a few tasks that required little effort and were pretty safe. I used the remaining time sucking-up to management. It has worked wonders for my career.
Welfare is not responsible for people not working. It is very hard to get assistance in the US and the assistance barely gets you to a subsistence level of existence. What is keeping American men from working more? So let us say 50% are on disability, what about the rest? America has a huge homelessness problem. Even if those men want to work, if they don't have an address and can't take a shower, who is going to hire them? Some of those men hit a rough patch and with a little help could get back into the labor market, but others have serious problems with mental illness, drugs, alcohol or all of the above and there is not quick fix to get them back into the labor market.
I worked worked at an estate planning firm for many years. The laziest men were not poor men. Poor men had to work or they would become homeless. There are plenty of wealthy or at least men from middle class families that are able to live at home and do nothing productive. One client had a great education. He went to the best schools as a child. He got into using drugs and alcohol in college and he wasted his potential and probably damaged his brain. His father failed to set up a trust before he died and he blew about $780,000 in 8 months.
Welfare benefits in the US are not generous enough to keep people on the sidelines unless they truly can't do the job.
Immigrants are more productive because people that are unable to work are also unable to make the journey to get here.
Nothing a few million more slave mestizos couldn’t fix.
Per damikesc’s point, the millions of slave mestizos here aren’t working and/or they’ve mysteriously stopped coming. It’s almost like people won’t support an elitist, kid-diddling, brother-and-sister-fucking Caesar and elitist class without converting the Republic to an Empire and adventuring abroad for slaves.
"encouraging people to incur hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt for worthless degrees"
And then forcing the people who made better choices that to seek those worthless degrees and not spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for those bad decisions.
