Herschel Walker's Campaign Shows Why Third-Party Candidates Are Important
Republicans turned off by Walker at least have a third option, but for House races in Georgia, state law makes it extremely difficult for third-party candidates to get on the ballot.

With control of the Senate in November very much up in the air, each contestable race is important to both Republicans and Democrats. The most hotly contested match-up is in Georgia, where Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock faces Republican football star Herschel Walker.
The fact that the race is even questionable is a bit of an embarrassment for the Republican Party: While the state is turning purple, Democrats still face an uphill battle there. After a star-making run for governor in 2018, Democrat Stacey Abrams will face Gov. Brian Kemp in a rematch in November. But while she only narrowly lost in 2018, polling this time shows Kemp with a comfortable lead.
Meanwhile, Walker's campaign has suffered self-inflicted wounds. In addition to bewildering comments about pollution (China's "bad air" is trading places with America's "good air") and evolution, Walker's personal life has come under scrutiny. Long a critic of absentee fathers in the black community, The Daily Beast reported in June that Walker secretly fathered two sons and a daughter out of wedlock and plays a very minor, if not nonexistent, role in the children's lives.
This week, The Daily Beast further reported that in 2009, the same year he had a child with one woman, Walker paid a different woman to have an abortion. The outlet spoke with the woman in question, who provided a receipt for the procedure and a copy of a reimbursement check and a get-well card from Walker.
While consensual matters in a candidate's private life are of little consequence to their fitness for office, Walker has previously advocated banning abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or maternal mortality.
Walker denied the allegations and said he would be suing The Daily Beast for the "defamatory lie." But Christian Walker, the candidate's son with his ex-wife, confirmed the allegations on Twitter.
"It's a very hypocritical position he's taken," Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party (L.P.) of Georgia's candidate for Senate, tells Reason. "It's a classic political move of, 'Illegal for thee, but not for me,' and I feel like it's yet another piece to this consistent path that Herschel has taken, where he has obfuscated the truth or said something that wasn't entirely true…. I think it leads to a lot of questions about integrity, and honesty."
Oliver thinks there is a possibility that Walker may drop out of the race. "When there's family involved, sometimes family takes precedence over things like politics. I think he should probably take a good long look at whether he wants to stay in this race or whether he wants to just get out of the race and start repairing the damage that's been done by his campaign." According to Georgia law, the deadline for substituting a candidate is 60 days before the general election, which would have been nearly a month ago.
If Walker drops out, voters will still have Warnock and Oliver to choose from. But if Walker had run for a House seat instead, voters would have had no other option than his Democratic opponent. That's because Georgia law stipulates that for House races, third-party candidates must collect signatures from 5 percent of the registered voters in their district to get on the ballot—more than 20,000 in total. In nearly 60 years, no third-party candidate has successfully achieved that goal. Yesterday, the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to that law, leaving the restriction in place.
In Georgia, candidates need to surpass 50 percent of the vote to win outright and avoid a runoff. In 2020, Warnock secured his Senate seat by surviving a crowded special election and eking out a two-point victory over incumbent Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a January 2021 runoff. Oliver worries that the new revelations about Walker may "cause more people to not vote at all and maybe push Warnock over 50 percent." Considering that Oliver is polling well enough to cover the difference between the two candidates, he hopes to prevent an outright win from either side and that enough Republican voters will abandon Walker "and maybe put me in the runoff" against Warnock.
"There are positions [where] Republicans might not agree with me 100 percent of the time, but I've never lied about my positions. I've always been very honest and forthright, and, at the same time, there's a lot of things that I think those voters can find comfort in me: I'm a fiscal conservative, I support gun rights, I want to make it easier to start a small business, I'm against taxation, so there are a lot of areas where I feel like Republicans can feel comfortable supporting me and knowing that I'm an honest and principled choice."

Who the hell is Herschel Walker and why is everyone talking about them?
And “raped women can’t get pregnant”, they say! https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/02/idaho-lawmaker-still-thinks-rape-cant-result-pregnancy-and-its-2016/ “Nielson’s comments echoed those of former Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who once memorably said on a television interview, ‘If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.’”
Republican “facts” and “logic” summarized: Abortion-prohibiting laws will need NO exceptions for rape, because raped women don’t get pregnant! If raped women DO get preggers, it MUST mean that they ENJOYED it, so it wasn’t REALLY rape, then, was it?
Here is the latest hypocritical politician: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/18/herschel-walker-fathers-day-weekend-pass-social-conservatives-00040710 Social conservative crowd cheers Herschel Walker after revelations of undiscussed kids… The former Heisman winner got applause from the Faith & Freedom crowd, after a week of reports that he had more children than he’d publicly acknowledged.
My comments: I know the type! Big Man on Campus sports super-heroes need NOT follow the rules of the mere mortals! “Pro-family-values” square-jawed super-hero Republicans like Herschel Walker will be cheering the new abortion restrictions, ‘cause their lied-to harems full of fertile babes will now have a MUCH harder time of using abortion as “veto power” against lying scum-bucket men!!! Herschel Walker and ALL the other “Lying Lotharios” for the win!
From… http://www.churchofsqrls.com/Jesus_Validated/ ... See more context and details there...
Felon babies aren’t people. Kill them all?
Square-jawed super-heroes like Herschel Walker can't STAND the idea that they should be limited (like other mere mortals) to making babies with one or two women? They have to gather harems like elephant seals do? Like "Lying Lothario" does?
THE “LYING LOTHARIO” PROBLEM: Well, a lot of pro-lifers are men, and I would bet that even those pro-lifers who are women? Very few of them have found themselves in the following shoes: Lying Lothario endlessly says “Love ya, babe, Love-ya, Love-ya, Love-ya, NOW can I get down your pants?” After she falls for him and he gets her pregnant, the abuse (from him) begins, and she finds out that he has 7 other “Love-ya, Babe, my One and Only” babes on the side, 4 of them also pregnant by him! So abortion is “veto power” against scumbucket men. If these behavioral genes get passed on and on, humans will evolve into something like elephant seals, where the men most skilled at lying and fighting off the other lying men, get a harem of 40 babes, and the rest of the men get nothing (other than caring for the resulting babies)! So abortion is empowering women to fight off this sort of thing… And reserve their baby-making powers for men who are less lying scum, and will actually make good fathers to the children.
So they want to “capitally punish” the “offenders” (abortion-providing doctors, so as to “dry up” the sources for safe abortions), while they have never been in the above-described (lied-to female) shoes! Willfully blind self-righteousness, basically…
Or maybe some of the anti-abortion men fantasize and lust after being the elephant-seal-like men who can gather the baby-making powers of a harem of 40 lied-to women, under the new scheme of things?
I am glad that SOME you oppose theft. Theft by deception is also theft; I hope you can see that! When a severely lying Lothario-type dude (as described above) appropriates the baby-making powers of a deceived young woman, that, too, is theft! Abortion is anti-theft, when a deceived woman no longer wants to rent out her womb to a deceptive scumbag, prospective god-awful supposed "father" of a sperm donor!
Those who are anti-abortion unmarried men should be out there desperately courting women who have already been deceived by scumbucket men, and volunteering to raise these unborn children (who are NOT your biological offspring), to fend off a HUGE root cause of abortion, and to put your money where your mouth is! And married anti-abortion men? Check with your wives; see if they mind you donating all of your spare time and money to helping out these future unmarried moms! THESE actions will relieve the pressures towards abortions!
Helping out pregnant women till the give birth, and then abandoning the support of said women (immediately or near-immediately post-birth), scarcely substitutes at ALL, for the loving support of a husband or father for 18 years, by the way!
Yes, there ARE fathers who magnanimously raise not-their-children, and do it well! God, Government Almighty, Allah, Zeus, Buddha, Jesus, etc., all please BLESS them, really and truly! And hopefully these fathers will teach their children NOT to be, or to welcome, “Lying Lothario”! Cultural as well as biological evolution can fend OFF the “Lying Lothario” problem! ALL methods need to be brought to bear; this is a SERIOUS problem here!
Abortions outlawed is a "pro-Lying-Lothario" measure, intended (or effectively intended) to turn humans into harem-fighting elephant seals! He who lies the BEST, and deceives the MOST women, into getting pregnant, WINS the genetic lottery! Meek and mild, honest men who would make good fathers? Well, WHO CARES about THEM?!?! (Or their interests in passing on their genes, which affect the behaviors of future generations?)
Are we not men? We are devolving! Devolving (especially if we ban abortions as “veto power” for lied-to mothers) into elephant-seal-like beasts, trampling the already-born babies underfoot and underfin, while fighting over mating rights, rather than looking to perform our duties as fathers!
Links: Before we (“we” being “me and the mouse in my pocket”) move on to the explicit details of the sociobiology of abortion, just a few useful links: https://reason.com/2022/05/06/ending-roe-threatens-more-than-abortion-rights/ “Ending Roe Threatens More Than Abortion Rights”… This lists some less-well-known “collateral damage” that may soon come to pass about…

What if the abortion is done while the “baby” is still a clump of cells or an embryo?
Everyone is a clump of cells you imbecile. It’s still a human. Unlike you, you soulless Marxist.
The first two weeks the fertilized egg is a zygote. That means it has the chemicals and instructions to become and embryo but is not yet an embryo.
That is one reason I say there is room for compromise. A zygote has no heartbeat or ability to feel pain. Republicans should consider the morning after pill.
The other end or abortion radicalism is the Democrat's late term and partial birth abortion. When a woman is in labor and the abortion is started, it is hard to defend that and easy to see it is murder of the baby.
The clump of cells is an ignorant argument, learn something before posting.
SQRLSY, our f*cking resident fascist, is having verbal diarrhea again.
Has Tim the Enchanter made an appearance yet?
Ask, and ye shall receive wisdom!!!
Do you recall the awesome enchanter named “Tim”, in “Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail”? The one who could “summon fire without flint or tinder”? Well, you remind me of Tim… You are an enchanter who can summon persuasion without facts or logic!
So I discussed your awesome talents with some dear personal friends on the Reason staff… Accordingly…
Reason staff has asked me to convey the following message to you:
Hi Fantastically Talented Author:
Obviously, you are a silver-tongued orator, and you also know how to translate your spectacular talents to the written word! We at Reason have need for writers like you, who have near-magical persuasive powers, without having to write at great, tedious length, or resorting to boring facts and citations.
At Reason, we pay above-market-band salaries to permanent staff, or above-market-band per-word-based fees to freelancers, at your choice. To both permanent staff, and to free-lancers, we provide excellent health, dental, and vision benefits. We also provide FREE unlimited access to nubile young groupies, although we do firmly stipulate that persuasion, not coercion, MUST be applied when taking advantage of said nubile young groupies.
Please send your resume, and another sample of your writings, along with your salary or fee demands, to ReasonNeedsBrilliantlyPersuasiveWriters@Reason.com .
Thank You! -Reason Staff
Because he's a Trump-picked political outsider who is tanking his own political brand by being the same kind of hypocritical shitheel that all of Trump's handpicked political outsiders are. Like everyone who runs for office, they have skeletons in their closet, but they are all comically inept at keeping them within the closet because they have no clue what they are doing and also because they tend to have so many skeletons that Fibber McGee would be impressed.
The Con Man may well cost Republicans three Senate races in Georgia in two years.
He can't be worthy of his Cult. They really didn't get them a goddamn thing other than three Aborto-centrist justices.
Go back to your NAMBLA meeting, pedo.
NAMBLA = Classic Libertarian organization.
VendicarD = classic statist who hasn't a clue what libertarian means but knows his betters told him to hate it.
They stand for individual rights to rape children. Why do you hate individual rights?
Yeah, I’m sure you like to fuck children. Leftists always do. When you’re not murdering them.
Hunter Biden is the Herschel Walker of closet skeleton rushing yards.
Yes, but lucky for the Democrats, Hunter Biden is not actually running for office. We wouldn't be having this conversation if Herschel Walker's son was the one with multiple bastards running around and having abortions. Real politicians know better than to shit where they eat. You keep the unpleasant activity at least one degree away. Never ever do it yourself.
Herschel Walker's Campaign Shows Why Republicans are dumber than their own excrement.
Still not as dumb as you, and they really try.
You’re a pedophilic traitor moron. I suggest suicide.
Well Walker has threatened to murder his wife, his son and the girlfriend who's abortion he paid for.
Perhaps that is why.
Not vote for Walker? Are you anti-antiracist? Or is that ant-anti-antiracist?
It’s always about the skin color.
SIX LEGS MATTER
DEFUND ARACHNIDS
BUT NOT LOBSTER GIRL!
They call themselves "progressives" and "anti-racists", they called Georgia's updated voting laws Jim Crow 2.0.
In reality, they are base human beings, simply filled with venom and racist vitriol to be turned on anyone with whom they disagree.
Here's a smattering of things that MSNC hosts, Washington Post and The Nation writers, and other candidates for office have said about Herschel Walker, who is running for a Senate seat to represent Georgia (against incumbent Raphael Warnock).
Imagine for one second if Fox News or the WSJ had written these statements about Mr. Warnock.
"Herschel Walker's candidacy is a white insult to Black people."
"Walker is what they think of us, and they think we’re big, ignorant, and easily manipulated. They think we’re shady or criminal. They think we’re tools to be used. The Walker campaign exists as a political minstrel show: a splashy rendition of what white Republicans think Black people look and sound like."
"I make a hard distinction between Black conservatives and these tokens" – referring to Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and Walker – "who are out here right now, shucking and jiving for their white handlers."
"Walker has positioned himself into being a useful fool for those who don't have the best interests of Black people or this democracy at heart."
"[Herschel Walker's] irrelevant to the Black community, and we should treat him as such."
"Herschel Walker, the football star turned Georgia Senate candidate, is an animated caricature of a Black person drawn by white conservatives."
"Most white people in the South vote 'R' like their entire white supremacist project depends on it."
"Georgia Republicans want Walker because he's Black and Warnock is Black, and they think they can defeat Warnock in November if they can shave just a little of the Black vote..."
"Mr. Walker was merely a vessel for the G.O.P. and Mr. Trump's ambitions."
"He's a puppet on a string, and somebody's pulling those strings really good."
>While consensual matters in a candidate's private life are of little consequence to their fitness for office,
In other words, it’s ok for Democrats to be unfaithful assholes because that’s part of the platform?
By that logic, you would have to excuse everything Trump has ever done or said because he was just fulfilling a campaign promise to be an asshole.
In other words, it’s ok for Democrats to be unfaithful assholes because that’s part of the platform?
I would very much like to see the article where ENB defends beyond question, a Republican man who... influenced... a woman into aborting their child. *fingers crossed*
Aborting her clump of cells.
A business decision to pay someone else to remove their clump of half your cells... whatever.
It is a bit hypocritical for all this focus on Walker's ex-marriage to come up while Warnock is doing everything possible to hide his own problems with his ex-wife...such as when he ran over her foot in his car after an altercation. Walker apparently threatened to shoot or assault his ex-wife but I'm unclear whether he actually physically hurt her.
Seems both these guys had shitty marriages and were shitty to their ex-wives, but we're only supposed to talk about one of them.
Warnock also ran a summer camp w multiple allegations of minor abuse including sexual. He also interfered with police during one of the investigations. I dont remember these articles focused on Warnock here.
Another Democratic politician turns out to be a pedophile. Man, I so did not see that coming.
Shrike’s hero.
Except that whole part where he poses as a man of Christian faith.
Being a Christian doesn't mean being free of sin.
Unlike the Rev. Warnock.
Funny how you only ever hold people you don’t like to higher standards.
Long a critic of absentee fathers in the black community, The Daily Beast reported in June that Walker secretly fathered two sons and a daughter out of wedlock and plays a very minor, if not nonexistent, role in the children's lives.
Then I guess he knows what he's talking about.
Okey dokey Reason writers / editors, who can tell me who is responsible for this? Do you get paid by the word, syllable, letter, or fakely objective synonym?
"Would have been" is subjunctive (or something; I have no English degree). In what alternate universe would it have been anything other than fact? Is your calendar like Hogwarts, always shifting dates between months?
Is your calendar like Hogwarts, always shifting dates between months?
This sentence, IMO, eclipses any point you would have made. But your not wrong. 🙂
Your welcome.
Hey! I'd'a said that if you'd had a little more patience!
It's the principal of the thing.
Dumbledore FTW
I see what you did there.
Aren't third-party candidates in GA the reason that the Democrats currently control the Senate?
Herschel Walker's Campaign Shows Why Republicans are dumber than their own excrement.
True, true: Democrats are smart fascists; Democrats really know how to manipulate the public. Ordinary humans simply can't compete with those kinds of lies and manipulations.
While consensual matters in a candidate's private life are of little consequence to their fitness for office
Kinda odd for a libertarian magazine to portray murder as OK as long as the survivors consent... *and* run for office.
Never change, Reason. Never change.
>>While consensual matters in a candidate's private life are of little consequence to their fitness for office
I'ma try to smear him anyway ... for money.
If Walker drops out, voters will still have Warnock and Oliver to choose from.
Republicans don't drop out or resign since they have no integrity.
Only pussy Democrats like Anthony Weiner, Al Franken, and Katie Hill do that.
Repubs view politics as war while Democrats view politics as service. That is why both parties suck.
Democrats are the party of male feminists. As every woman knows, you cover your drinks when they're in your presence.
Blake Farenthold, Patrick Meehan, Trent Franks, Joe Barton and Tim Murphy. All Republican congressmen that resigned because of #metoo scandals during the same time period (within 6 months) as Franken.
Shhhh, shrike is trying to reclaim his spot as dumbest motherfucker to post here.
He’s got his work cut out for him, given the competition.
"Repubs view politics as war while Democrats view politics as service. "
That's funny. I have to assume this is sarcasm. No one would be stupid enough to believe this.
I can't read the context as it's a grey box, but I'd agree that a large number of democrats absolutely consider themselves to be 'just following orders' and not waging any wars.
Other than a holy war.
"while Democrats view politics as service." Again with the sheer unadulterated stupidity.
And by "service" you mean that Democrats think "I get some young intern to get on her knees and service me", right?
I think he's saying that Democrats view their job as "serving the public." They're taking on a sacred role, and they take it seriously.
As opposed to Republicans who only care about "owning libs."
Yes, like corrupt high priests, complete with sacrificing babies; and they wallow in the power and wealth that they get through their positions. What they don’t do, however, is actually helping people.
Stop referring to the semi-fascists making up the Democrats as “liberals”; they are nothing of the sort.
And Republicans don’t want to “own” them, Republicans want to destroy those semi-fascists.
Owning people is the Democrats schtick.
So you’re helping Shrike get his message across? Yeah……. You’re not in for the democrats at all.
Repubs view politics as war while Democrats view politics as service. That is why both parties suck.
It is sad that the right earnestly seeks to give their politicians power to smite their enemies, as if that power will not be used on them in the future.
Integrity? You’re a pedophile.
Herschel Walker would make the perfect Senator. He is not a good liar, he is not particularly creative, and he is not a creature of the system. What more could you possibly looking for in a Republican candidate at this point?
We don't need a 'smarter' Senate. We need them to quit trying to solve everybody's problems.
What more could you look for any any candidate these days, unless you're the kind of person that worships government and believe everything that matters should be decided by absolute strangers who don't give a rat's ass about you until election day.
"believe everything that matters should be decided by absolute strangers who don’t give a rat’s ass about you until election day."
A tad wordy. But certainly more honest than "free minds and free markets."
Unless your problem is an unplanned pregnancy or gender dysphoria, then they think the iron fist of government ought to be deeply involved.
The iron fist of government should indeed prevent kids from being murdered, sterilized, or mutilated by their parents.
Of course, you want the iron fist of government to pay for and promote the murder, sterilization, and/or mutilation of kids.
In Tony’s defense, he does hate children with the passion of a burning sun.
Democrats either want to murder them in the womb, or fuck them if they make it out. It wouldn’t shock me if Tony was groomed by a democrat.
Has anyone ever visualized Tony as a much more obnoxious version of Mr. Slave from South Park?
But we have those things covered. It's just weird for the small-government people to ONLY ever talk about how they want the government to hurt people in inventive ways that involve maximum bodily intrusion.
The small-government people want to outlaw bodily intrusions, like sticking blades up a woman's vagina, or removing the breasts and penises of children.
It is big-government people like you who support these procedures and want to force others to subsidize them.
I just think the people who talk the most about freedom should be comfortable with other people having freedom.
I keep remembering the commercial with Larry David at the Constitutional Conventions shouting in horror, "You mean you'll let STUPID people vote!?" Do not blame Walker. Blame the stupid people who think he is qualified to be a Senator. Larry David was right!
Looking at the crop of current and former Senators, how is he not qualified?

Good to know that the only motivation here is keeping a Republican out of office while focusing not a bit on the ineptness or insanity of the Democrats. Really tells you the true priorities, motivations and beliefs of those involved.
Republicans bad! Duh.
I've seen enough of Chase Oliver to know I won't be voting for him. If the choice is between him and Warnock, I will not vote. He's spoken openly about how important it is that he's running "for visibility" for the party instead of actually trying to win or achieve political goals. His website has only the broadest of positions but no policies. He thinks President Biden should legalize weed, but he doesn't have any proposed legislation. He says he wants to end the Patriot act in the vaguest terms-why not show me the bill you've already written that you're going to submit the first day you're in office?
He's a showpiece libertarian, there just to have his name on the ballot. If I'm cynical, I'd say he's a Democratic plant to try to steal Republican votes. He has almost nothing to say about Rafael Warnock, the sitting senator, but he's attacking Walker a LOT. Another red flag is that he has his pronouns listed on his twitter bio. But even if that's not what he's about, if he's just a left-leaning libertarian, he's still one that doesn't actually want to be elected. He's libertarian-signaling, but not interested in achievement.
His website has only the broadest of positions but no policies.
You're right! His website has nothing but bland platitudes such as a claim that he "will fight every day in the Senate for policies that keep Georgia leading the way with job creation, lower taxes, and less government red tape." Or that "[h]e will fight for lower taxes, fewer government regulations, and more free-market capitalism." Or that he "will fight to make America energy independent once again, leading to lower gas prices, more American jobs being brought back from overseas, and stronger national security."
Where are his detailed policies? Where is the legislation that he has proposed? Huh???
Oh WAIT A MINUTE, I got the candidates mixed up again!
https://www.teamherschel.com/issues/
The fact that Herschel Walker doesn't have serious positions on the issues doesn't negate libertarians having shitty positions on the issues. It's actually more important for third party candidates to have something serious to say because they don't have the party infrastructure supporting them to mobilize a significant share of the vote.
Libertarians win when they're able to articulate and defend their positions and have clear arguments. Major party candidates often don't do that because they can get away with being extremely vague. That's why I have a problem with libertarians who do the bare minimum and aren't interested in standing out or seriously moving the conversation forward.
I hold libertarians to higher standards because I don't just want libertarians, I want GOOD libertarians.
The point of having a third party is to advance issues. You are not going to win. So why have a third party? To give a pure example of an ideology in hopes of influencing the voters and ultimately the major party candidates to move in the direction of the ideal you present.
The LP doesn't get that. That is because the LP, like the entire staff of reason are morons. These people are just stupid. There is no explanation for the things they do and say.
The LP should laser focus on races they can win. They do t have the numbers, the infrastructure, the capital, or the the ground game to run candidates nationwide. Focus on races that can be won. Then build on that.
Odd which candidate you chose to use in your whataboutism (I thought you didn't do that lol).
Didn't want Warnock to look bad huh?
Of course he doesn't. Jeff is the biggest phony piece of shit on here. Shreek may be deranged and sick but there is a level on honesty there that Jeff doesn't have.
Jeff claims to be a chemistry expert. Does anyone believe that?
The more obstructionist a senator can be, the more he can interfere with the passage of legislation, the better as far as I'm concerned. If he regularly farts in the general direction of progressives and academics, all the better.
A candidate with no policies and without proposed legislation is what libertarians like.
So. What.
No seriously, how is this in any way a rebuttal of A Thinking Mind besides just another banal attempt at shitting on Republicans?
We get it, you hate conservatives and anyone who might be libertarian and lean that way.
The only thing a person voting third party ever accomplishes is to help the major party candidate furthest from their own views to get elected.
They accomplish clearly stating what kinds of policies a major party candidate should adopt to get their vote.
The major party candidate has already done that calculus and would have adopted those positions if half the electorate actually held those positions. The fact that a third party candidate runs on those positions usually means that they are fringe positions unacceptable to a great majority of voters.
DarrenM is right: The only thing a person voting third party ever accomplishes is to help the major party candidate furthest from their own views to get elected.
That assumes that someone voting third party would vote for anyone otherwise.
The real hypocrisy is politicians and political hacks complaining about hypocrisy. Of course, they only do it because they believe enough voters are dumb enough to think regular politicians are never hypocrites and never change their positions, so to vote for their guy who is virtuous and righteous at all times. In any election, you always have to consider the alternative. There is no perfect candidate.
There are 49 other states, and lots of local elections as well even in GA, where 3rd parties can show they are serious and build support. This article makes no sense.
It would be at lease consistent if they wrote the same articles regarding green ballot access. But reason ignored all the dem lawsuits that kicked the green party off ballots.
What a surprise.
3rd Party candidates are nothing more than a protest vote (“I voted my conscience” to which I say “suck my dick”) and at best/worst a spoiler.
I sure hope the DNC doesn't pay Reason a large ghost-writing fee. They're not very good at it.
CTE...perhaps
That would make him presidential timber these days.
Yeah I don't live in Georgia so my opinion doesn't matter anymore than Joe Lancaster's. It appears that Herschel Walker is an asshole. But the media has been successful in making that case in the past about others that turned out to be bullshit. Conspicuously absent from Joe's journalism is the documented evidence that Warnok is also an asshole. I really have no idea who the good guy is here. My knee jerk opinion is that they are both assholes. But I could be wrong. But Joe's pitch here is about third party ballot access even though the hero of the story has access. No problem. In fact the Libertarian is bragging about his potential to deny a 51 percent majority and claiming he'll be swept into office by disaffected Republicans. This is where we slip into Bizzaroworld. And Reason thinks somebody somewhere is going to take this seriously. And once again beclown a once viable voice for liberty.
I imagine you could write in a vote. I've done that.
You can write in a candidate in Georgia so long as you limit yourself to the names on this list:
https://bit.ly/3SGgCfw
Better give the full link -

Joe Lancaster: So the plan is to deny Warnok 51 percent while Walker drops out and you become the first Libertarian ever in the US Senate in a runoff?
Chase Oliver: The plan is bulletproof.
Joe Lancaster: So I guess you are aware that Johnson/Weld couldn't hit 6 percent in 2016?
Chase Oliver: Well with Weld on the ticket. Duh.
Joe Lancaster: Who would you caucus with?
Chase Oliver: My liberty loving fellow Libertarians of course.
Joe Lancaster: But currently there are no Libertarians in the Senate.
Chase Oliver: The Republicans will switch parties just like they will in the general election in Georgia.
Joe Lancaster and Chase (in unison): Libertarian Moment!
People so in the tank for Republicans that they would vote for a certified, admitted moron and sex pest like Walker are already going to understand the spoiler effect.
As opposed to the senile moron who sniffs little girls hair and showered naked with his teenage daughter Democrats put in as President. And of course you think Walker is a moron, he is black. Why don't you just call Walker and uppity coon while you are at it.
Being racist isn't cool Tony.
I'm not the one calling him not smart:
“I’m this country boy, you know. I’m not that smart. And he’s a preacher. He’s a smart man, wears these nice suits. So he is going to show up and embarrass me at the debate Oct. 14, and I’m just waiting to show up and I’m going to do my best.”
--Herschel Walker
And you can kindly keep your brain-fried Qanon talking points to yourself. Turn off Christian talk radio and read a fucking book.
It’s not a talking point, you really are a horrible racist.
Who is this Qanon person? Is it someone you bottomed for in your gimp suit?
Biden also raped his own staffer, Tara Reade. I guess fucking his daughter wasn’t enough for him.
Same way I voted for a certified, admitted moron and sex pest like Bill Clinton: the alternatives were far, far worse.
See, I don't care whether a candidate has a moral personal life or whether he is smart; I don't care whether they sleep with interns or beat their wives. I care about what policies they are likely to vote for, and that's the only thing I care about. And, in general, the less legislation they are willing to pass, the better. It doesn't take a lot of smarts to refuse to vote for something or to refuse to pass a law.
Like people so in the tank for Democrats that they would vote for a certified, admitted moron and sex pest like Biden?
Do you think Georgia will trade Herschel Walker to California for 8 of our candidates?
It wouldn’t surprise me if Newsom held a slave auction, it is the democrat way.
There any proof?
So you are saying that splitting the Republican vote in order to hand the win to Democrats is "important" to you.
We have winner-take-all elections. There ought to be two candidates after the primaries; more than that, and the outcome does not reflect the preferences of voters.
Why aren't you asking why you support a party full of morons and hypocrites with no ideas except how they want to use the state to force you to do things with your own body?
Do you even know? Name one good thing Republicans have done for you in 40 years.
No Republican has ever forced me to do anything with my own body, and I say that as a gay man and immigrant.
Democrats, on the other hand, have done so.
They have obstructed the Democrats, lowered my taxes, cut regulations, nominated originalists to federal bench, and sabotaged Democratic legislation.
Don’t forget world peace. Reagan ended the Cold War, and Trump achieved ratification of the Abraham Accords. In addition to smashing ISIS.
When have Democrats ever forced you to do anything with your own body?
Republicans are advocating for a federal law to force women to give birth against their will, even if it kills them.
Compared to the others in the race, Walkers 'sins' amount to no more than using the wrong salad fork in front of the King of England.
No I'm pretty sure he ordered the murder of a baby.
He couldn't and can't "order" an abortion. He may or may not have paid for it 15 years ago. And, gosh, he either changed his mind or he hasn't but is trying to represent conservative constituents by adopting an anti-abortion position. Either way, I fail to see what the "gotcha" is supposed to be.
Besides, the alternative is Warnock, whose personal life is at least as wrecked as Walker's ever was, and on top of that is a flaming socialist and racist.
Gotcha? He paid for the premeditated murder of an infant.
That's your rules.
Libertarians have had a presence in Georgia for a while now. I remember a few even making it onto the debate stage and even winning more than a few percentage points on election day. And yet despite all of that what has the LP actually accomplished in Georgia? Do they have a big number of members in the state legislature? What about mayoral offices across the state? City Councils? Warnock and Walker definitely show the importance of having another option on the ballot. If only it were an actual option.
I won't encourage anyone to throw their votes behind a statist shill (D) or an empty suit (R), but I've grown tired of "virtue signaling" through voting. If Libertarians want to be an actual option on the ballot then they should work to provide a viable option, not a virtue signal.
Bear in mind that if the ballot listed all candidates who paid nondiscriminatory access fees in time, there would be many more "third parties" than just Libertarians.
The Libertarians have plugged away and have had more success than other third parties in surmounting the ridiculous ballot-access hurdles.
But with more third parties, it would be anyone's guess who would "steal" the most votes from which of the duopoly parties.
In polls, voters *say* they want a third party, though in practice I'll admit that even with a menu of third-party options, lots of these respondents will play it safe and vote duopoly.
But I say - if you want to oppose a third party, do it by voting against them, don't let the government suppress third-party votes on your behalf.
How about ballots list NO candidates at all?
If you can't be bothered to write the names of who you vote for legibly and spell it correctly, well, your vote should simply not count anyway.
That might also work. It would also eliminate the discriminatory features of the current system.
The best part about Georgia elections is, as you said, a plurality does not win -- you must get 50% plus one vote in order to win the election.
So a 3rd-party vote *IS NOT* a "vote for {insert the candidate you dislike here}," unless that candidate has a *HUGE* lead. At worst, a vote for a 3rd-party candidate is a vote for a runoff. I, for one, will be voting for Chase Oliver, come Nov. 8th.
