The Lazy Stoner Trope Is a Myth, Say Marijuana Researchers

Busting a stereotype. Marijuana will make you lazy and unmotivated, right? That's the image that popular culture (and politicians) have cultivated for decades. Teens and young adults are especially potent targets for this message, with authority figures warning that marijuana use will sap their ambition and send them down a dead-end course for life. But new research published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology challenges the "lazy stoner" trope.

"We're so used to seeing 'lazy stoners' on our screens that we don't stop to ask whether they're an accurate representation of cannabis users," said Martine Skumlien, the study's lead author and a PhD candidate at the University of Cambridge, in Neuroscience News. "Our work implies that this is in itself a lazy stereotype, and that people who use cannabis are no more likely to lack motivation or be lazier than people who don't."

Skumlien's team consisted of researchers from University College London, King's College London, and the University of Cambridge. They looked at the effects of cannabis use in both adults and teenagers, using study participants who said they used marijuana at least once per week over the previous three months. Average use among study participants was four days per week, with some participants saying they used marijuana every day. Participants in the control group were matched for age and gender.

The major takeaway: Cannabis users were no more likely than non-users to be apathetic or anhedonic (that is, to experience a loss of interest or pleasure). Nor were more frequent cannabis users likely to be more apathetic or anhedonic than their counterparts who partook less frequently.

The researchers came to this conclusion by first having participants answer questions about their emotions and interests (for instance, rating statements such as "I would enjoy being with family or close friends" or how interested they are in learning new things). Cannabis users scored similarly to non-users on measures of apathy and motivation, and scored lower than non-users on measures of anhedonia.

Around half of participants were also asked to complete some simple tasks, with a promise of small rewards (chocolates and other sweets) for completing these tasks. Participants could accept or reject the offers, and would get points toward rewards if the task was completed. Participants were also asked to rate who much they wanted several rewards—a £1 coin, a piece of candy, or listening to part of one of their favorite songs—and asked after receiving the reward how pleasurable they found it.

"We were surprised to see that there was really very little difference between cannabis users and non-users when it came to lack of motivation or lack of enjoyment, even among those who used cannabis every day," said Skumlien. "This is contrary to the stereotypical portrayal we see on TV and in movies."

This held true for adult and adolescent study participants—suggesting "that adolescents are no more vulnerable than adults to the harmful effects of cannabis on motivation, the experience of pleasure, or the brain's response to reward," study co-author Will Lawn told Neuroscience News. "In fact, it seems cannabis may have no link—or at most only weak associations—with these outcomes in general."

"While adolescents had greater apathy and anhedonia than adults, cannabis use did not augment this difference; thus, adolescents were not more sensitive to the putatively damaging effect of cannabis," the paper concludes.

The same team of researchers used the same participants in a study published earlier this year, this one using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look at brain activity during tasks measuring reward processing. This study also found no difference between cannabis users and non-users.

In both studies, the results held even for daily users.

Another co-author of the study, Barbara Sahakian of the University of Cambridge, noted to Neuroscience News that "we cannot rule out the possibility that greater use, as seen in some people with cannabis-use disorder, has an effect." Longer-term studies will be necessary to determine how regular cannabis use affected motivation and developing brains over time.

FOLLOWUP

Lawyer says migrants were given false addresses. Some of the migrants shipped from Texas to Florida to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, "are expected to check in with immigration offices in Western Washington by Monday" or risk deportation, reports Fox 13 News:

Boston Immigration Attorney, Rachel Self, told FOX 13 via a statement: "Before they boarded the planes, the migrants were processed by agents of the Department of Homeland Security, who listed falsified addresses on the migrants' paperwork. Agents apparently chose random homeless shelters all across the country, from Washington state to Florida."

Self says this is especially troubling because from her legal perspective, this is a clear and intentional attempt to make sure migrants were removed.

Legally, migrants are required to check in with the ICE office nearest to them or be permanently removed from the U.S.

Self's statement continues reading in part, "There is no other reason to list as someone's mailing address a homeless shelter in Tacoma, WA and then ship him to Massachusetts. It is sickeningly cruel."

Lol. Even the left leaning pollsters have admitted the response rate from conservatives is low. They are still using the sampling and response rates from 2016. Pollsters have been off by 5-7% the last 3 election cycles in September.

I have been cled several times by what I suspect are Democratic pollsters with questions about the upcoming election. My typical answer is anybody except for the Democrat. I cannot believe that they use my answers as they have to read off a list and I tell them, "As I said before, anybody but a Democrat. " A lot of the questions are" If such and such is for X would you then vote for them" where they pick an innocuous topic to see if that will change my mind. I am surpy they keep calling me back as it gets ridiculous.

“By the end of 1901, U.S. generals fighting in the most recalcitrant regions of the islands had likewise turned to concentration camps. The military recorded this turn officially as an orderly application of measured tactics, but that did not reflect the view on the ground. Upon seeing one camp, an Army officer wrote, “It seems way out of the world without a sight of the sea,—in fact, more like some suburb of hell.”

Self response surveys about their own behaviors are almost always biased to individuals over estimating their own behaviors.

Without some independent measurable the study is basically useless.

Dude! We looked *everywhere* and all we could find were these 274 fello- I mean marijuana users! We didn't actually test anyone for THC because that would be not cool. Also we didn't actually make anyone do any actual work, because that would also be not cool. But we drew some pretty mind-blowing conclusions that we think you'll find pretty solid.

I believe that "trope" reverses cause and effect. People become stoners because they are alienated and unmotivated, not the other way around.

      2. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   3 years ago

Smoking weed makes you feel better about doing nothing. If you were just going to sit on the couch all day watching TV, getting high does make that more enjoyable.

It's not that smoking weed makes you lazy, it's that if you're already a lazy person smoking weed enhances the experience.

The study requires someone to show up multiple times over the course of a year.

So among that group of people, they didn't see a difference between stoners who were sufficiently functional to show up, and non-stoners who had nothing better to do.

    5. The Encogitationer   3 years ago

But new research published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology challenges the "lazy stoner" trope.

I'm going to stick with my preconceptions on this one for now - excessive pot use is very demotivating. If this gets reproduced by another study I might give it a reconsideration.

      1. Zeb   3 years ago

But what is "excessive"? Enough to make one demotivated?

In my experience it varies a lot by person and how they use it. I know a lot of very motivated and hard working people who are daily smokers. For some people it works very well as an anti-anxiety thing. For some it's the opposite. I don't think generalizations about it are particularly useful.

        1. Stuck in California   3 years ago

          >But what is "excessive"? Enough to make one demotivated?

That's not too far out from how those things are defined.

Like the term Pathological means to the point where it becomes a problem. But, yeah. My brother smoked, but he smoked on Friday afternoon after a hard work week, which is quite different from someone who smokes all the time.

    7. The Encogitationer   3 years ago

Civil services jobs are proof that you don't need pot or other drugs to be lazy and unmotivated. 🙂

    8. Ben of Houston   3 years ago

And let's be honest, anyone who chooses to study marijuana for a living can be assumed to have a positive view of it already.

Additionally, the truly overindulgent who never leave a drugged stupor self-exclude from any study since they simply don't respond.

Additionally, it is well known that any study on people with strong social mores (and especially those that include confessions to criminal activity) is prone to strong push to lie to researchers either to not admit guilt or not fall into negative stereotypes.

In short, the description of the study is almost tailor-made to give a positive response no matter what the real data indicates.

As I said, we were waiting for a narrative to arise on the "Busing Immigrants" controversy. It has been going on for months, but the Left has been unable to come up with a narrative to counter what is going on. But over the weekend I noticed that the new story was coalescing: all these poor immigrants are being Tricked.

And as soon as the usual suspects were here declaring that these poor people were tricked into going to MV, ENB mentions this issue for the first time.

It is almost clockwork how the bluecheck twitteratti achieve the propaganda, and pretty sad that ENB is so predictably willing to spread it.

      1. R Mac   3 years ago

        Lol, well done.

      2. Stuck in California   3 years ago

        Totally right.

You can tell it's propaganda by the wording, too. Note they are all "Migrants" now ? Totally mitigating the fact that they are immigrants, meaning coming from outside the US. They can be legal immigrants, they can be illegal, they can be seeking asylum, but they are IMMIGRANTS, not "migrants". Migrants is a word saying they are like an Oakie headed from the Midwest to California.

There are other examples. It's all so very controlled, so very "on message" consistent. And, as you called it, predictable.

This is what Mike said: " We live under a Federal government which is run by a 50/50 mix of liberals and conservatives."

And as proof, he digs up 60 years of presidents...not 50. Not 70. 60.

So he is cherry picking. But not only is he cherry picking, this doesn't prove his contention. He argued that the Federal Government is run by a 50/50 mix. Last I looked, only one of those presidents is actually running the government right now. The majority are actually dead and not running anything.

We know that the vast majority of DC, and government employees vote democrat. But Mike is here to lie and dissemble. He doesn't care how foolish he looks right now. He will be back here tomorrow posting fallacious nonsense, because he isn't here to discuss shit. He is here to create chaos under the veneer of reasonable discussion.

Even if it was pure heroin (presumably what the junkies really want) and everyone knows it, it's still a drug with the potential for deadly overdoses. So I could see calling it murder or manslaughter if it was deliberate or negligent misrepresentation of what was for sale.

  16. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

But new research published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology challenges the "lazy stoner" trope.

That's because the lazy stoners were too lazy to show up or participate in the study. They didn't necessarily get a representative sample. How did they recruit this sample?

Participants were 76 adolescent cannabis users, 63 adolescent controls, 71 adult cannabis users, and 64 adult
controls, recruited from the Greater London area via school assemblies, physical posters and flyers, and social media advertisements.

Does anyone think the typical cannabis stoner that we see in movies is going to show up for a prolonged study after seeing a poster? They had an initial intake interview, a neuroimaging interview at least a couple of weeks later. They also were drug tested before being interviewed and had to self-report that they hadn't used or imbibed for up to 12 hours before. So a study like this self-selects people who don't fall into the stereotype.

    1. Sometimes a Great Notion   3 years ago

Does anyone think the typical cannabis stoner that we see in movies is going to show up for a prolonged study after seeing a poster?

Stoners can't remember where they work.

    2. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

I scrolled through, looking for supplemental materials to see what kids of fliers and ads they were running. The way they present the ads can also affect the type of respondents they get, perhaps people who are motivated to prove that marijuana doesn't make you lazy. Those people would be more likely to lie on self-assessment tests.

I'm always skeptical of every new study I see that "proves" or "debunks" something. I don't think a sample size of 147 cannabis users and 127 controls gets to be the final word on anything.

      1. mad.casual   3 years ago

Let me know if I'm wrong but the study methodologies in these social/psychological studies is always complete garbage. Frequently they use behaviors that most people wouldn't consider to be work (don't eat this cookie for 20 min. and we'll get you another cookie!), and even when they do actual work, the examples of "work" that they use wouldn't constitute an actual warmup in a decent physiological study, much less any sort of job.

        1. Bubba Jones   3 years ago

          https://osf.io/2sbx3

          Protocol archived there.

Seems like the usual hyper abstract concepts of "work."

I couldn't find a flow chart showing how many people dropped out.

        2. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

I couldn't see the tests, but they used existed self-response tests used for diagnostic purposes. Typically they're used to measure symptoms of depression and count upon the respondent being honest because they want proper treatment. I don't know if there's any internal check for malingering or drug-seeking behavior in the scales they used.

There's a bit of literature you can read up on the SHAPS-C and the AES (for apathy) that suggests self-reported responses exaggerate symptoms when you compare them against brain imaging results.

I'm not an expert on any of this stuff beyond knowing to be skeptical of using self-reporting tests to reach broad conclusions for research purposes.

    > ... and help mitigate the deliberate spread of misinformation?

Free minds and free markets. So maybe we can talk about a free market solution? Can't do much if anything about political speech, and that's what people a (both sides) want blocked. But I see a shitload of fake, disturbing, and even dangerous articles on social media. Ranging from fake cooking hacks that can injure to dumb ass alternative medicine. There's a lot of good debunking videos out there, but the way the Youtube and Facebook algorithms work, they don't get clicks and thus don't get coverage, while the crap keeps making it to the top.

So how about simple old fashioned liability. Social media is still the publisher, and bypasses Section 230 because they are manipulating the content. As long as they are filtering and curating the content you see, they have become the information content provider. This differs from forums (ei. Commentariat) and BBSs. If some video injures another, and YooToob knew it was injurious because it had been reported a bazillion times for being injurious, they should be liable. This is not in violation of Section 230.

Also allow the liability to extend TO the original author. You post something online that gets someone injured, you don't get to hide behind free speech. Yes, you have the right to free speech, but you do not have immunity from the consequences of your speech (hence, the whole "don't shout fire in a crowded theater").

No need for government commission or new regulatory agency and any other shit like that (sorry Ron and Gregg), just the tort system we already have.

Just my idea before I've had any coffee this morning. Would this work? Would this pass NAP muster? Inquiring minds want to know. (Again, not talking about political speech).

    1. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

        (a) The global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, or COVID-19, has claimed the lives of over 6,000,000 people worldwide, including nearly 90,000 Californians.
        (b) Data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that unvaccinated individuals are at a risk of dying from COVID-19 that is 11 times greater than those who are fully vaccinated.
        (c) The safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines have been confirmed through evaluation by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the vaccines continue to undergo intensive safety monitoring by the CDC.
        (d) The spread of misinformation and disinformation about COVID-19 vaccines has weakened public confidence and placed lives at serious risk.
        (e) Major news outlets have reported that some of the most dangerous propagators of inaccurate information regarding the COVID-19 vaccines are licensed health care professionals.

The plan specifically is not to define what free speech is and is not legislatively, if even at all. The plan is to let the states, courts and people, not the legislature, decide what constitutes free speech and what constitutes contract violations.

Fake document on court docket in Trump search case may be linked to inmate in North Carolina

"When a government document mysteriously appeared earlier this week in the highest profile case in the federal court system, it had the hallmarks of another explosive storyline in the Justice Department's investigation into records with classified markings stored at former President Donald Trump's Florida estate.

The document purported to be from the U.S. Treasury Department, claimed that the agency had seized sensitive documents related to last month's search at Mar-a-Lago and included a warrant ordering CNN to preserve "leaked tax records."

The document remained late Thursday on the court docket, but it is a clear fabrication. A review of dozens of court records and interviews by The Associated Press suggest the document originated with a serial forger behind bars at a federal prison complex in North Carolina...

Spokespeople for the Justice Department and the Treasury Department would not comment. They declined to answer on the record when asked if the document was false and why the government had not addressed it.

Math education prof: 2+2 = 4 'trope' 'reeks of white supremacy patriarchy'

    1. Moonrocks   3 years ago

Has anyone anywhere been able to find any culture where the common understanding of 2+2 isn't 4?

      1. mad.casual   3 years ago

Yes. Chemistry, physics, biology, all kinds of other sciences.

The problem is, the people making the "2+2 = 4 'trope' 'reeks of white supremacy patriarchy'" are explicitly racist and want to keep black and brown people as slaves. So, rather than teaching white, black, and brown kids the distinctions and contextual nuance, they just pretend that pure or acontextual mathematics, biology, and chemistry doesn't exist so they can keep black and brown kids stupid.

        1. Moonrocks   3 years ago

I know that addition can be redefined in various branches of math, but even the most pedantic mathematician won't say that two apples together with two bananas make anything other than four fruits, conforming with the common Eurocentric understanding.

I was thinking more some non-European Indigenous Peoples tribe somewhere out there in the world where one of the tribesmyn would count out four fruits and the entire tribe would agree, with Power and Camaraderie in resistance to White Colonialism, that in fact there are five fruits present. That seems to be the implication for all these "basic science is racist and sexist" claims, but those claims are never backed by examples.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

that in fact there are five fruits present.

If you count the teacher, there were definitely five fruits present.

          2. mad.casual   3 years ago

That seems to be the implication for all these "basic science is racist and sexist" claims, but those claims are never backed by examples.

And they never will be because it's like asking, "Why don't we use an African version of the color red?" There isn't one. Not only is there not one, the fundamental reality that dictates it gives zero shits about your arbitrary distinctions. To the point, there isn't a common Eurocentric version of the color red either. More critically, the insistence that we adopt 'black math' to teach to black students is specifically trying to avoid teaching them more coherent and more inefficient math less capably because of their race.

PS: Your pedantic math teacher would point out that "2+2=4", written in Arabic numerals, cannot be the common Eurocentric understanding and that 'common' and 'Eurocentric' are oxymoronic, and granting the CRT race baiters credibility.

          3. mad.casual   3 years ago

Also, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology aren't branches of math and they aren't (necessarily) redefining math. A biologist saying "CO2 + H2O = C6H12O6" isn't adding anything. It's not a mathematical operation, it's a linguistic shorthand. The chemist would correct the equation using mathematical principles to "6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O" but the rules that dictate that equation as being correct to the chemist (and the biologist) aren't (necessarily) mathematical.

        1. Briggs Cunningham   3 years ago

Ted Cruz pointed out that 50 people being murdered by human traffickers after being left to die in a train car did not even register with Democrats but 50 migrants showing up at Martha's Vineyard made it a national emergency requiring the governor to call out the national guard.

The symmetry between the number of people murdered by the traffickers in that train car and the number of migrants who came to Martha's Vineyard is further proof of God's sense of humor.

He's not going to change the impact of illegal immigration a few planeloads at a time. He's not doing this because 2 fewer planeloads of immigrants in Florida actually changes anything. He's doing it to prove a point, and the Democrats in Martha's Vineyard proved it for him immediately. Now he's going to salt the wound.

Had they just ignored him he might've given up. Maybe not, but he's definitely not going to give up now that he knows how effective he's being.

The U.S. interstate expressways that were built in the city of Detroit destroyed a lot of neighborhoods, not just Black Bottom. I-375 was built specifically to ease access to and from downtown Detroit, mainly for the thousands that worked and shopped there. Not so many work in downtown Detroit anymore and pretty much all the shopping's gone, so it's not really needed as much. Just ballgames and fireworks. It's gonna suck for people who do still work there, or go to the casinos or ball games and are used to using it, but there are alternatives. Hey, gotta spend those Fed gift $$$, right? And for all those who should but won't say it: "Thanks everyone else who'll gain no benefit from this whatsoever."

  60. A Cynical Asshole   3 years ago

"Our work implies that this [the lazy stoner] is in itself a lazy stereotype, and that people who use cannabis are no more likely to lack motivation or be lazier than people who don't."

Most potheads that I've known are pretty lazy, but it's not because the pot made them that way. I suspect people who are already lazy and unmotivated are more likely to be attracted to sitting around smoking weed and getting high all day.

So they're partially correct - it's not the weed's fault that stoners are lazy, they were like that before they started smoking. But that's just an anecdotal observation on my part.

    1. mad.casual   3 years ago

IMO, it's political(,) science at it's most stupid. Just another group of retarded fanatics that want to pretend everything natural always cures cancer and that burning (some) shit in front of your face and inhaling the combustion products is good for you.

I'm not against pot. I'm also not against tobacco. You want to smoke it, fine. Don't blow the smoke in other people's faces unless maybe they're being even more monumental dicks. Also, more critically, don't vote for single-payer and then get surprised when you wind up not being able to smoke pot or tobacco.

      1. A Cynical Asshole   3 years ago

<i.IMO, it's political(,) science at it's most stupid.

        Yep:

The researchers came to this conclusion by first having participants answer questions about their emotions and interests (for instance, rating statements such as "I would enjoy being with family or close friends" or how interested they are in learning new things). Cannabis users scored similarly to non-users on measures of apathy and motivation, and scored lower than non-users on measures of anhedonia.

Around half of participants were also asked to complete some simple tasks, with a promise of small rewards (chocolates and other sweets) for completing these tasks. Participants could accept or reject the offers, and would get points toward rewards if the task was completed. Participants were also asked to rate who much they wanted several rewards—a £1 coin, a piece of candy, or listening to part of one of their favorite songs—and asked after receiving the reward how pleasurable they found it.
        ...
The same team of researchers used the same participants in a study published earlier this year, this one using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look at brain activity during tasks measuring reward processing. This study also found no difference between cannabis users and non-users.

So they asked them completely subjective questions and then also had them do some shit for some small insignificant reward and then asked them again how they felt. Yeah, that sounds like really legit methodology. At least the second study used fMRI, so that's better than the first "study" in that at least there was some actual data collected other than the participant's feels.

        1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   3 years ago

I've literally never known a stoner who wasn't lazy. I know a LOT of people that smoke pot, but only a tiny percentage of them I would define as "stoners". So what we need here, is a more precise definition of Stoner, not a precise definition of Lazy.

          1. R Mac   3 years ago

I see that. Because when I hear “stoner” I imagine people that smoke a lot of weed all day. But I know a lot of people that smoke a lot of weed that are definitely not lazy, in fact are highly successful. But you probably wouldn’t consider them “stoners” because if you didn’t know them personally, you might not even know they smoke so much.

So to be a stoner, do you just need to smoke a lot of weed, or do you need to act like the cliché “stoner”?

            1. mad.casual   3 years ago

Yeah, I think it's an unstoppable object meets an immovable force problem.

What you're saying applies the other way as well. IME, most people will treat low-functioning MJ users better than they'll treat low-functioning alcoholics or meth users.

            2. ElvisIsReal   3 years ago

Exactly. I love to smoke and do it a lot, but I know what type of weed I need to smoke to get me motivated and productive. I'm definitely a stoner but obviously not lazy.

Boston Immigration Attorney, Rachel Self, told FOX 13 via a statement: "Before they boarded the planes, the migrants were processed by agents of the Department of Homeland Security, who listed falsified addresses on the migrants' paperwork. Agents apparently chose random homeless shelters all across the country, from Washington state to Florida." Self says this is especially troubling because from her legal perspective, this is a clear and intentional attempt to make sure migrants were removed.

No, this is a clear indication that the Biden administration knows that these people don't have a valid asylum claim, that they expect them not to show up for any kind of hearing, that they want them to stay illegally in the US, and that they have no intention of deporting them.

    1. ElvisIsReal   3 years ago

Yeah I don't see how people aren't seeing the obvious conclusion here. They're trying to say DeSantis lied or is using fraud, but it's the DHS doing this to ensure nobody shows up for their hearing.
