Yikes. New consumer spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides some sobering perspective on how much Americans are paying in taxes. The data covers consumer spending across a wide variety of categories in 2021. Overall, taxes accounted for about 25 percent of average consumer spending.

The BLS measures spending per "consumer unit," which it describes as "either (1) all members of a particular household who are related by blood, marriage, adoption or other legal arrangements; (2) persons living alone or sharing a household with others or living as a roomer in a private home or lodging house or in a permanent living quarters in a hotel or motel, but who is financially independent; or (3) two or more person living together who use their income to make joint expenditure decisions."

On average, each "consumer unit" paid more than $16,000 in taxes last year. This outpaces average spending on food, clothing, education, and health care combined.

The mean for total spending per unit on health care, food, education, and clothing was $16,721.42. This included an average of $8,289.28 on food, $5,451.61 on health care, $1,226.14 on education, and $1,754.39 on apparel.

The mean for total spending per unit on taxes was $16,729.73. This included $8,561.46 in federal income tax, $2,564.14 in state and local income taxes, $2,475.18 in property taxes, $5,565.45 in Social Security deductions, and $105.21 in other taxes, offset by an average stimulus payment of $2,541.71.

In addition to this disturbing tidbit, the new BLS data contains a wealth of other information on American spending habits and offers an interesting glimpse at recovery—and inflation—during the second year of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Average annual expenditures for all consumer units in 2021 were $66,928, a 9.1-percent increase from 2020," BLS reports. "During the same period, the Consumer Price Index…rose 4.7 percent, and average income before taxes increased 3.7 percent."

The highest expenditure category was housing, at an average $22,623.55 per consumer unit (including property taxes). Major spending categories aside from housing, food, health care, education, and clothing included transportation ($10,961.18), utilities/fuels/public services ($4,223.49), entertainment ($3,567.89), household operations ($1,638.42), and personal care products and services ($770.51).

Spending was up last year in all sorts of categories that had been depressed by the pandemic in 2020. For instance, spending on entertainment was up nearly 23 percent over 2020 and up 15.5 percent from 2019.

The average spending per consumer unit on alcohol was $553.77, up 15.9 percent over 2020 (but still below 2019 levels). "The increase was driven by alcohol away from home spending, up 69.4 percent, which was offset by a decrease in alcohol at home spending, down 7.9 percent," the BLS reports.

Overall, spending was up across all income categories. The highest quintile of earners had the most increase in spending (up 11.6 percent), while the second-lowest quintile had the smallest increase (up 4.6 percent). "In each quintile, the increase in total spending outpaced the increase in income," notes the BLS. "Overall average annual income before taxes rose 3.7 percent in 2021, while expenditures increased 9.1 percent."

Income rose between 3 and 4 percent for the top three income groups but just 0.6 percent for the second lowest income group. It decreased 0.4 percent for the bottom quintile.

Another state Libertarian Party is reportedly disassociating from the national Libertarian Party—this time by dissolving entirely. "The voice of the national party has been used to so thoroughly damage and denigrate the name and reputation of the Libertarian Party that the Libertarian Party of Virginia can no longer engage effectively in productive public information activities," it said in a resolution shared by Andrew Craig on Twitter.

The party's former affiliates in New Mexico and Massachusetts have recently announced their independence from the national organization, but without dissolving themselves.

San Francisco decriminalizes hallucinogenic plants. San Francisco's Board of Supervisors last week voted unanimously to decriminalize entheogenic plants and fungi. "An entheogen, which literally translates to experiencing divine within, describes a psychoactive substance or preparation derived from plants or fungi and used in religious, spiritual, or ritualistic contexts," explains Decrim SF on its blog.

"The unanimous resolution urges that individuals who cultivate entheogens and transport for use in religious, spiritual, healing, or personal growth practices, either for their sole individual use or for the shared use of themselves and other practitioners should be deprioritized from arrest or prosecution," the organization said. "Similarly, the Resolution urges deprioritizing arrest or prosecution when people's possession and/or cultivation of entheogens becomes evident to [city police] officers during an encounter for reasons other than possession."

FOLLOWUP

The New York Times offers more details on the murder of Las Vegas reporter Jeff German and the arrest of a local elected official, Robert Telles, as a suspect:

The police said they had not recovered a murder weapon but that they did find Mr. Telles's D.N.A. at the crime scene. Investigators also searched Mr. Telles's home and car and found a hat and shoes that matched those worn by a person seen on surveillance video of the scene. Both the hat and shoes had been cut up, the police said, and the shoes had blood on them.

The man pictured on the surveillance video was wearing an orange construction vest, gloves and a large straw hat that hid his face. The police said Mr. Telles had been trying to conceal his identity. A series of road construction projects were taking place near Mr. German's home last week, and many workers wore similar outfits.

Before he was arrested, Mr. Telles ignored reporters' questions outside of his home.

If so, let's double that $16,000 tax bill to reflect reality.

Among other reasons the Virginia Libertarian Party dissolved, directly in the press release, was that they failed to hold a convention, failed to nominate any candidates for any state-wide office, and failed to nominate a single candidate for any local office in the state. So apparently they weren't really doing anything in the first place. Sounds like an organized group of pot smokers.

"I was gonna run for governor, but then I got high."

    1. A Thinking Mind   3 years ago

Also, these are exactly the sort of symbolic, do-nothing libertarians I've said are detrimental to the movement. They're not serious people, they don't actually want to advance libertarian ideals, they just like complaining. It's bad when these people run symbolic campaigns since they don't worry about ever holding an office, but it's even worse when they don't even bother campaigning because they don't actually want to hold office.

Credit Card Companies Will Now Categorize Gun Store Sales Separately

New York City officials and pension funds had pushed the ISO and banks to adopt the new code on gun shop sales.
Two of the largest public pension funds in the U.S., which are located in California and New York, have put pressure on the country’s largest credit card companies to adopt separate sales codes for gun sales.

Gun control advocates claim that the merchant code for standalone gun and ammunition retailers could curb gun violence.

These people know that lawbreakers don't use credit cards to buy their guns, but having yet another list makes the retrieval easier.

Around a year or two ago, the "Pragmatic Caucus" dissolved as the MiCaucs were starting to win. But the praggies didn't leave the party, they simply continued operating covertly. Now their old boys' club is losing power, and a lot of them have lost their minds.

Look at the nuttiest people here, and watch them defame the memories of Mises and Rothbard because some people tried to disrupt their hold on a party they led into perpetual loss, failure, and obscurity.

It's ironic they called themselves "pragmatists," because there's nothing pragmatic about how they act. They had a tiny sliver of power, as party leaders, and they tried to use it to keep a significant libertarian movement suppressed.

Dave Smith is more well-read, smarter, and a more consistent libertarian than Gary Johnson. Period.

Oh, I'm just sarcastically putting out the talking points some useful idiot will propagate.

One major flaw in the current left's demonization of middle class, white men is that, unlike the jews that Hitler disparaged (or pick your demonized underclass from a thousand points in history, disparaging some group is always a great way to gather followers to a cause) the typical white, middle class, American is heavily armed.

You can round up people who are unarmed. You can perpetrate all kinds of bad stuff on the underclass group. But if ever you go too far on a group like middle class American white men, there's trouble brewing. No matter how kind, community oriented, and wonderful Americans are, no matter how much we just shake our heads and say "it takes all kinds" when academia talks out its ass, the fact is that we're armed to the teeth.

You don't want to test that. If push comes to shove, that shove will put you on your ass.

How did roads even exist before income tax? It's a mystery

        1. markm23   3 years ago

At least on the Union side, the Civil War was funded by an income tax. The Supreme Court waited until Lincoln was dead and the war over to find it unconstitutional (which it clearly was before the 16th Amendment).

I don't know how the Confederacy funded their side, considering that any taxes collected were paid in Confederate dollars. To a considerable extent, they didn't fund their armies. For example, Lee's army received uniforms, but less than needed, so they got caught raiding Gettysburg for shoes. OTOH, Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops had to take uniforms and shoes off dead Union troops, bleaching the tops and dying them with butternut. (It didn't matter what color the trousers were if the shirt identified them as Rebel.)

As for roads, most of them have their own funding sources, mostly paid by users of the roads. Historically, the first federal roads were toll roads, paying for themselves after an initial investment from the general fund (which came from customs and excise taxes and the sale of federal lands, not from income tax because there were none.) Now, even though using most roads is "free" there's no need for income tax to fund them. Gasoline taxes collect more than needed to fund the federal and state highways, but too much is diverted to other uses; there's certainly no net funding from income tax. Local roads are funded by local governments, from property taxes and sometimes local sales or income taxes.

Toll on any road could be collected electronically, without even requiring the vehicle to slow down, so the only thing keeping other road funding in place is inertia. Or perhaps politicians fear that with a single all-electronic money collections, any diversions could easily be exposed...

This is why you can never let them ban paper money. Thanks to this not being a cashless society, all this means is that you now have to buy your guns and ammo with cash only. If you have the money to buy that stuff, and if you don't you shouldn't be buying it, it is only a minor inconvenience to get the paper cash necessary to purchase it. You can also use cash cards if you don't want to carry that much paper cash.

If they ever manage to go to a cashless society, then there will no longer be a work around. When that happens, a few large banks can get together and effectively ban the legal purchase of guns and ammo without having to worry about that whole 2nd Amendment thingy.

Don't kid yourself, central planners and leftists and the rest of them slobber all over themselves at the thought of a cashless society. It would effectively give them full control over every dollar anyone spends.

That Americans spend more on taxes that other expenses does not surprise me when you consider the number of services provided by national, state and local governments. There is not a fixed number for taxes. Taxes are related to government services and the fact that the government runs a deficient suggest that taxes are not high enough to pay for all the services.

I hear a lot of cutting spending but don't really see much cutting and I suspect there is more talk of cutting than an actual desire to do so.

That Americans spend more on taxes that other expenses does not surprise me

I hear a lot of cutting spending but don't really see much cutting and I suspect there is more talk of cutting than an actual desire to do so.

It is almost as if those two statements are related in some way.

They will never cut deficit spending. In fact, they will only accelerate it. They are going to burn the whole damn thing to the ground. Nothing will stop until the financial system collapses.

Let's cut some government spending. How's about laying off some government workers? Nope. Political suicide. What about cutting their wages? Nope. Same thing.
Alright. What about transfer payments? Can't cut those because the people receiving them vote.
I know. Cut back on the government buying stuff. Except contractors would lose their jobs and they vote too.
Maybe freeze spending for a while? Sounds good except that government operates on baseline budgeting, which means freezing increases look like cuts on paper, and cutting anything results in losing the election.

      What do you suggest?

        There are two different questions.

        1. What spending should be cut? (Answer: almost all of it)

        2. Which types of spending cuts are politically realistic? (Answer: almost none)

      2. Commenter_XY   3 years ago

You might start with not replacing fed employees who leave. That will whittle down the bureaucracy over time.

My job has taken me into federal building where people would greet each other by flashing numbers with their fingers. The one with the smallest number got the most respect. I was flummoxed. Turns out they were flashing how many years until they get their pension. That's all most of them were doing: Sitting around and getting paid to do nothing while they waited to sit around and get paid to do nothing. Well, almost nothing. Seemed like many were hired to do a job that, since their hire, became automated or computerized. So they'd pick their butt for seven and a half hours, and for one half hour get all serious and do their job. I'd like to think that when such people retire that thirty minutes of work was folded into someone else's responsibilities rather than hire someone to sit around for seven and a half hours. But it's the federal government. Who knows.

      1. Idaho Bob   3 years ago

Idaho panhandle is burning, but you don't hear about it because we do not snivel like the liberal urbanites. Fires happen.

      2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   3 years ago

There is a modern problem on the dry side of the Cascades. The open terrain naturally forms a layer of detritus that resists grass seeds from taking purchase. Grazing, vehicles, and even hikers break up that layer and the grasses take hold, leaving no natural firebreaks. Till the soil and stuff grows.

The underbrush clearing fires on the wet side of the Cascades are the standard, not a modern issue. The number and intensity of fires were way down during the 20th century because the forests were logged and underbrush was regularly cleared.

      3. JasonAZ   3 years ago

We get fires too but this year hasn't seen many. We were really dry early in the season until July. Then, we've had a ton of rain; which is unexpected since we're a desert. Even the mountains in AZ are very arid and dry.

This is easily the wettest summer season in my 40+ year memory.

Are you a certified climate scientist qualified to identify what is 'rain'?

LOL, just kidding. Climate scientists would have to have standards to have certifications. These are people who claim to use tree rings to determine the temperature 500 years ago and that they can calculate atmospheric composition from 10,000 year ago from bubbles in ice cores. Phrenology has better standards.

And your bullshit tax figures, down to the penny, don't include gas taxes, telecom taxes, estate taxes, excise taxes, a whole shitload of other taxes.

      Pull the other one.

      1. mpercy   3 years ago

Most people pay virtually nothing in federal taxes outside of income and income-based FICA taxes.

In 2020, 60.6% of tax units had Zero or Negative Federal Income Tax Liability. Further, 43.3% of tax units had zero or negative sum of income tax and payroll tax liability. And even further, 20.5% of tax units paid neither income nor payroll taxes.

"But they pay other taxes!" Sure, but probably barely...

Federal gas excise tax, federal excise taxes on tobacco products, and federal excise taxes on alcohol are probably the primary federal taxes that individuals pay (that aren’t income taxes). Some people might pay things like excise tax on airline tickets, or on firearms, etc.

Federal excise tax on cigarettes is $2.11 per pack for large cigarettes ($1.01 for small). A two-pack a day smoker pays $1540, a pack-a-week smoker pays about $110. Among smokers, the mean number of cigarettes smoked per day is about 14.5, or about 265 packs per year, so $558 per year. Of course, only about 14% of people in the US smoke regularly.

Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents pert gallon, so someone using 1000 gallons per year (i.e., driving 25K miles in a car getting 25MPG) will pay $184 in federal gas taxes. The average per capita consumption of gasoline is about 1.15 gallons per day in the US, so about $77.25 per year in federal gas excise taxes.

Alcohol taxes are harder to work out because the tax varies depending on the type of alcohol be it beer, still wine, sparkling wine, hard cider, or distilled spirits and the alcohol content (proof).
But it’s something close to about 21 cents per ounce of pure alcoholic content of spirits, 10 cents per ounce of alcohol of beer, and eight cents per ounce of alcohol in wine. Note that this is not per ounce of beer or wine or spirits, but per ounce of alcohol. A 12oz can of 6% ABV beer has about 0.75oz of alcohol, so a tax of about 7.5 cents. A hard-drinking man drinking a case (24 cans) of beer every day would be paying about $657 every year in federal excise taxes, someone enjoying 3 beers each on Friday and Saturday night would pay about $24.

Average beer consumption per capita in US is about 26 gallons This is about 288 cans per year, so about $22.

A person buying a $500 Glock would pay $50 in federal excise taxes, but how many handguns guns will an average person buy in a year?

And not a few "compassionate souls" were heard to murmur, "Taxes are still too low, considering how many problems we have to solve, and that more than 1 million Americans spent about $200 million yesterday to attend professional football games they could see free on television." Never underestimate the number of voters who will be glad to spend your money as they see fit.

    1. mpercy   3 years ago

The mean for total spending per unit on taxes was $16,729.73.

Given that the bottom 60% aren't paying any federal income taxes, using averages is meaningless.

You should rather look at the taxes and spending of the median income household.

If you look at averages, you'll never understand that the current system persists because the majority of voters are effectively getting government handouts, financed by taxes on other people and financed by debt.

So, which is the libertarian/GOP position on taxes?

1 Cut taxes now without tying cut taxes to spending cuts (passing taxes to the next generation)?

    2. Trying to find parity between the amount received in government benefits and the amount of taxes paid (in which case many at the lower end of the economic scale would pay much higher taxes)?

    3. Trying to curry favor with the masses by advocating for tax cuts without making any politically tough choices, therefore causing no one with half a brain to take the libertarian / GOP position seriously?

The difference between people like me and people like Sarcasmic is that when I mute someone, I actually do it and never read their screeds again. I watched him and his socks screech for years, and it's pointless to argue with them. They are incapable of learning, and contribute nothing.

I wish more users on here would do that, because it gets old watching the same people argue with gray boxes as if they will somehow change their minds. (9/10 times it's JesseAz arguing with the sky.)

I get the feeling the people arguing with Sarcasmic like it, or they would have stopped years ago.
