Jury Awards Johnny Depp $15 Million in Lawsuit Against Amber Heard
Heard won $2 million on one of her counterclaims.

Johnny Depp has largely prevailed in his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. The judge read the jury's decision on Wednesday.
The trial took place in Virginia, where a jury finding for the plaintiff in a civil case must be unanimous. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, though state law will cap the punitive amount to $350,000.
Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages on one of her counterclaims, and zero in punitive damages.
Depp had sued Heard for $50 million after she referred to herself as a "domestic abuse" survivor in a Washington Post op-ed. Depp contended that he never abused Heard; on the contrary, he said she was the abusive party in the relationship. Heard countersued for $100 million.
During the trial, plenty of information emerged to support the idea that Depp and Heard had a toxic, unpleasant relationship. But Heard's loftier claims about Depp's sexual and physical violence were not backed by strong evidence: Indeed, photos of the alleged abuse Heard had suffered were generally considered unpersuasive by many people following the trial.
Still, it's very difficult for a celebrity to win a defamation lawsuit. Public figures have a much higher bar to clear than the general public. It remains to be seen whether the finding will survive on appeal. But for now, Depp is undoubtedly the victor. And the American Civil Liberties Union gains the odious distinction of having helped a celebrity write a libelous op-ed, possibly in exchange for a donation.

"Oh. Well, in that case we award *a zillion* dollars punitive!
Good on him, the article is right to mention it's not over until it's over though.
Where billable hours are concerned, it is never over.
Justice prevailed. Maybe a step forward for male survivors of abuse.
Amber and Johnny were both active participants in that toxic relationship. The real victims in this case are the female (cis + trans) victims of domestic abuse who will now likely underreport or not report at all their experiences for fear of being called into court.
Fuck you. The bitch ruined his life.
Ha. Same thought, same time.
Pleas not rabbi Harvey is a really good parody account, almost obl level
Parody account - yes. A good one - no.
Oh shut the fuck up.
Depp needs to go to jail. This is the metoo era. The allegations are the proof. And metoo never ends until Depp and a bunch of others do hard time.
Wow, that may be the stupidest take on this I've seen yet, and you've got some very serious competition.

much more important than a DNC jury clearing Sussman of helping feed DNC oppo research to the FBI
FBI was totally on board with that caper. They knew it was bullshit from day one. Sussman belongs in prison of course, but even without him, FBI would have gone right ahead with their illegal surveillance and attempts to frame Trump.
-jcr
And to find out that the FBI had "secure" office space in the Perkins Coie law offices just makes you wonder how much information is being sold, or otherwise used, out of that firm.
Just glad it's over (hopefully). Amazing the interest in a he said, she said battle between two wealthy, dysfunctional people.
(not mine) Pirates of the Caribbean - Escape from the Psychotic Bitch from Aquaman
The simple fact is now the Hollywood media establishment has been exposed for supporting an actual domestic abuser because of the pound me too movement, and the implied lie that women are always victims in their interactions with men.
Oh shit. I almost forgot, the American Civil Liberties Union has also been exposed as partisan hacks and grifters who never should have been taken seriously.
Even more hilarious is that ACLU- the *LAWYERS YOU GO TO FOR FREE SPEECH ISSUES* wrote an article that got Heard sued for millions of dollars.
This is their god damn speciality and they no better than Trump or Elon Musk.
And -- icing on the cake -- she promised to give them $3.5 million, swore in UK court that she had, and later admitted she hadn't; last I saw, there was some discussion of her being arrested for perjury, since it definitely affected the verdict in that UK trial.
Heh. I wonder if she has a case against the ACLU.
We've known that since they gave Roman Polanski a standing ovation after the bastard fled to France to escape going to prison for anally raping a 13 year old!
People kept saying that it would be hard for him to prove defamation--but really?
The op-ed came out and suddenly there's a new Grindlewald. And they're making a new Pirates movie...but without the star of the series.....?
If that's not blatant, nothing is.
Yeah, it would be like recasting Iron Man before the end of the Marvel movies because of allegations.
Like, why else do you think they'd get rid of Downey Jr.? I mean obviously they did, but it was equally obvious that it was planned out ahead of time given the contracts.
Those PotC movies went downhill fast, but there's little doubt that Depp was by far the big draw there. A PotC movie without Jack Sparrow might as well not even be made, because nobody is going to care without the weird ass psycho pirate.
The thing that's weird to me is that actors are paid to lie for a living, so I can't fathom why their private behavior matters. As long as you like their acting and their behavior isn't outright criminal, I don't see the problem.
I might think that, for example, Mel Gibson has some distasteful views but I still thought he was hilarious as the villain in Boss Level on Hulu. It might be the best action remake of Groundhog Day that will ever be made.
The judge lowered the 5 million dollar reward to $350,000. and Depp pays 2 Million to Heard, so the net amount for Jonny really is $8,350,000. Then comes the cost of lawyers, so I doubt really as the money is concerned, he has much coming.
The real win though is the public relations and him proving he was more of the victim in this relationship. That will strike a strong cord in the filming community and should allow him to get back to making films. The problem being you cannot un-ring a bell, he will always face the damages of this but at least he can recover enough to live out his life as a successful actor.
I'm pretty sure it was never really about the money.
The lowering was the cap on punitive in the state of Virginia. Not something the judge decided on her own.
I'd say we'll always have Jumpstreet but Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum wrecked that too.
Well, thank god our long national nightmare is over.
the ACLU has been "dubious" for awhile now.
I wrote them off back in the 80s when they tried to force that Russian kid to return to the USSR. They always had some number of commies in the organization, but they're total scumbags now.

Glad Depp won!! Serves as a lesson to partners who clout chase public sympathy by demonizing their partners!
Public figures have a much higher bar to clear than the general public.
However, the "actual malice" aspect of this one was pretty much a given. If Amber Heard was lying about a victim of domestic violence, she inherently had to know the truth of the matter as she's directly involved in it. She can't hide behind any ambiguity or the idea that she's just joining the conversation about the conversation. So there's nothing much to make of the fact that the bar was cleared in this case whereas media organizations can still hide behind the idea of taking fraudsters at their word.
If Depp had filed a suit against the Post, he'd have lost overwhelming, just like he did against the Sun. In this case, the person he was suing got on the stand and obviously lied, which really helps fortify your case that she's a lying, manipulative bitch.
He could probably go after Bezo's lefturd rag now and get a hefty settlement. They defamed him, they knew it was all lies, and they didn't care.
-jcr
I don't think you could get there with the Post. They heard something pro-metoo and ran with it without a thought or care if it was true and that negligence on their part is their shield of "we didn't know shit" against defamation.
They settled with the Covington kids. Pretty sure they didn't want to go to discovery or get their dirty laundry aired out in open court.

The verdict was fair and correct, and Depp deserved to win. Glad he was able to get the opportunity to speak the truth and clear his name. I wonder what Disney will think about this.
Their vew of him will go down because he is not an abuser or molester. The saints of disney
Depp got Heard immunity.
I Heard we got another punster here.
You're in too Depp if you have to repeat a pun.
Headline on the CNN article that came across my feed:
"Johnny Depp and Amber Heard both win their defamation suits"
Seriously...
They still have to gaslight, both sides, and have an agenda reporting on a TMZ worthy trial.
Loved also hearing the washington post mentioned in every single one of the defamation charges that landed. Good for them.
The MSM looks about as bad as the Me2 movement right now.
I'm really glad Reason is covering this. It's not like there were any other important verdicts this week that libertarians might take an interest in.
The only thing more important than movie stars is skin color.
This one was important for victims of domestic abuse and the woke cancel mobs; the Sussman verdict has yet to have DNC talking points released for Reason about the heroes on the FBI, the vindication of Hillary, the continuing plot by Russia and how it was all Trump's fault.
Soave you complete and total hack. Unpersuasive? How about manufactured and falsified entirely. 3 different photos with their saturation level manipulated and their 'originals' submitted as separate pieces of evidence and a photo of a wine bottle and spill on the floor with 2 versions cropped slightly differently testified to in court by Amber Heard as being evidence of violence committed by Johnny Depp on two separate occasions over a year apart, and when confronted on the fact that she did so during cross on the counterclaim rebuttal she reiterated the claim that they were two different photos taken on two separate occasions. Only a fucking idiot would take any claim Amber Heard made as true unless backed up with video and audio evidence that had been checked over be the finest forensic experts money can buy.
"So you're saying she's single again?"
"Call me!"
The penalty is inadequate, but it's still good that this evil narcissist's lies are exposed and rejected.

Depp may have been a drugged up jackass, but from the little bit I saw, she had "bat-shit crazy" stamped all over her. The kind that would boil your pet bunny in a pot on your stove type-crazy.
Right take
"Depp mostly exonerated of abuse allegation made by a emotionally unstable woman, whose libel may have cost him a career"
Weird and obtuse take
"They were both bad, but Depp was less bad than heard" or "They both won against each other"
Let's pretend Depp was a drug dealer and the government falsely accused him of selling drugs to kids. See, you get it now.
But kudos to Robby for recognizing ACLU's role in this sordid affair.
USA!

"And the odious American Civil Liberties Union gains the distinction of having helped a celebrity write a libelous op-ed, possibly in exchange for a donation."
Talk abouy burying the lead. Last fucking sentence.
The only take you need on this:

It's hard to feel much sympathy for either of them. They pretty-much epitomize everything that people to be wrong with Hollywood types.
