The TSA's Mask Mandate Is Just As Logical As All Its Other Arbitrary Impositions
The same agency that brought us security theater continues to enforce a rule that never made sense.

The federal rule that requires air travelers to wear face masks, which the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) first imposed more than a year ago, was scheduled to expire this Friday. But the TSA extended the requirement for at least another month, for reasons that are even harder to understand than the original rationale for the mask mandate.
That is saying a lot, because the scientific justification for the TSA's rule has always been weak, given that the conditions on airplanes are not conducive to COVID-19 transmission. The ventilation systems on commercial aircraft, which mix outdoor air with air recycled through HEPA filters and limit airflow between rows, help explain why there were few outbreaks associated with commercial flights even before vaccines were available.
"The risk of contracting COVID-19 during air travel is low," an October 2020 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association noted. "Despite substantial numbers of travelers, the number of suspected and confirmed cases of in-flight COVID-19 transmission between passengers around the world appears small."
Sebastian Hoehl, a researcher at the Institute for Medical Virology at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, concurred in an interview with Scientific American the following month. "An airplane cabin is probably one of the most secure conditions you can be in," he observed.
Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly reiterated that point during a Senate hearing last December. "I think the case is very strong that masks don't add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment," he said. "It is very safe and very high quality compared to any other indoor setting."
American Airlines CEO Doug Parker agreed. "An aircraft is the safest place you can be," he said. "It's true of all of our aircraft—they all have the same HEPA filters and airflow."
On February 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stopped recommending general indoor masking in parts of the country it rates as "low" or "medium" risk, which as of last week covered more than 98 percent of the U.S. population. According to the CDC, then, it is safe to dispense with masks in stores, churches, schools, bars, and restaurants—environments where the risk of virus transmission is much higher than it is on airplanes.
Yet the TSA said it extended its mask rule "at CDC's recommendation" so the agency could develop "a revised policy framework" based on "the latest science." Mask rules for transportation are complicated, said Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, because people are "moving from one zone to another"—an explanation that makes little sense when virtually the entire country is in the same "zone" as far as the CDC's mask advice goes.
The TSA's mask mandate has predictably led to much unpleasantness, driving a surge in disputes between travelers and flight attendants. For every obnoxious passenger who moons, berates, or assaults the mandate's enforcers, there are many others who quietly resent this thinly justified imposition, especially when it compels them to force masks on recalcitrant toddlers.
That expectation is especially difficult to justify, since the risk to children from COVID-19 is infinitesimal even if they are not vaccinated—smaller than the risk of dying in a car crash if their parents decide to avoid mask hassles by driving instead of flying. Adult travelers, meanwhile, can protect themselves by getting vaccinated and, if they are especially cautious, by wearing high-quality, well-fitting masks, regardless of what everyone else is doing.
The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) nevertheless urged the TSA to retain the mask rule. The AFA's enthusiasm for hygiene theater is of a piece with its enthusiasm for security theater: Back in 2005, when the TSA began letting passengers carry small scissors and short screwdrivers, the union warned that "the aisles will be running with blood."
In that case, calmer heads prevailed. But more than two decades after 9/11, U.S. travelers are still saddled with myriad nonsensical restrictions. The mask rule is just the latest example.

I still haven't gotten a good answer as to how the T*S*A gets to dictate what people wear onboard airplanes.
"Fuck you. That's now."
-TSA
You wouldn't fly without pants, would you?
Who are you to question the omniscient TSA anyway??
I would if I could.
What would you say to a kilt?
Exactly so! Why does nobody care about the law, jurisdiction, limited powers, scope.... We have lost our minds.
I just assume I'll never fly again. Makes international travel effectively impossible, but that's elsewhere that I should care about anymore?
The Commerce Clause overrides everything else in the U.S. constitution, including the Bill of Rights. So sayeth the supreme court.
P.S. the TSA Agents at the security theater checkpoint require you to pull down your mask to pass - so that they can actually get a good look at your face.
That’s why all the checkpoint officers are dead now.
The government should mandate exactly zero "Arbitrary Impositions".
Mandates are government tyranny and repression.
You're funny. "Arbitrary Impositions" are what the government exists for.
It makes as much sense as making the least vulnerable population wear masks while the rest of the population doesn't. You're one of those people who refuse to follow "the science" aren't you?
No, he's one of those people who recognize the difference between real science and what the CDC does.
"This isn't about common sense or science! This is about unquestioning obedience! This is like D-Day! Obey your betters, you heathens! Obey! It's for the common good! You don't matter!"
It's amazing how important it is to hassle all people continuously forever when your paycheck depends on it.
TSA is the majority of why I don't fly any more.
Mask rules for transportation are complicated, said Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, because people are "moving from one zone to another"
"Mask rules for transportation are complicated because people are 'of various ages and conditions'"
"Mask rules for transportation are complicated because people are 'positioned at different heights'"
"Mask rules for transportation are complicated because people are 'expecting to be at a destination'"
...
Clingers hanging on to control to the death...
In other news, Secretary Lloyd Austin has yet to respond to Senator Ron Johnson's inquiries on the DMED data.
I guess they're still trying to find the cases to add to make it look like anything but a catastophic increase in medical issues immediately following mandated injections.

Well Reason wanted this! They hated mean tweets so they got illogical mandates.
This is why I was concerned when masking was introduced. Government restrictions are rarely temporary. My favorite example has always been the TSA. 20 years ago, some guy tried (and failed) to blow up his shoes. We still must remove our shoes to pass security, as if other passengers would sit idly by if you lit fire to your kicks. 20 years, people. While that TSA agent is hollering at you to remove your shoes and put your computer in a separate bin and invite you to absorb some X-rays, the screener missed the gun a government agent placed in his bag as a test.
At least they didn’t adopt a similar practice after the panty bomber failed to ignite his undies?
So take off your shoes, put on your mask, give them that naughty hand lotion, shut up and fly the friendly skies.
I like to remind the TSA agents the tally is zero terroists stopped and counting.
And the CIA has cleaned their clock smuggling things through in tests.
Hey, someone could hide a boxcutter in that lotion bottle.
"There's no such thing as a temporary government measure." Ronald reagan
Air travel security theater serves the same purpose as air travel COVID theater: to reassure the significant portion of customers who are paranoid pussies and would otherwise refuse to buy tickets and fly. For every customer who boycotts air travel because the rules are excessive, there are at least a hundred who would panic and stay home if the emotional support performances shut down.
the mask mandate for air travel will never end. it is as permanent as the ridiculous liquid requirement that we've lived with for 15 years. the flight attendants union has consistently pushed for the mask mandate -- ensuring that is remains. apparently flight attendants are low iq idiots. just this week rand paul got a bill through the senate to end this nonsense but the witch in the house said it's dead in the house and brandon said he'll veto the bill if it hits his desk. i'll NEVER fly until this mandate is lifted. i will never (and never have) wear the obedience mask. if more people would stand on principle the economic pressure could force the issue. but we all know that most people are really sheep.
It's not about health, it's about control. The places government controls easier still have rules. They are willing to put masks on your kids so they don't have to admit they were wrong.

Is Jacob Sullum a doctor? If not, why is he giving medial advice?
Are you an editor? If not, why are you giving writing advice?
Stewardesses & stewards have always been the enemy. "Safety" is "New Speak" for control. Airlines and I, in general, are not on speaking terms at all.
I have traveled in other countries where getting on an airplane is like getting on a bus. I never felt unsafe. It was less stressful actually and people were in general less uptight.
Traveling unmolested by modern means is a right, not a privilege.
As to why the delay by TSA mentioned above, has anyone reading this ever seen heard of or experienced a bureaucratic agency willingly give up any element of power?
Masks work to a degree that makes them worth it. PERIOD. Just wear your ******* mask. Good grief it's hard to believe we still have to hear people ranting/complaining like spoiled children about wearing a mask. Be an adult. Be a patriot. Be a responsible member of the society you live in, and just shut up already.
Then why does the CDC itself say it's no longer necessary to wear them in most indoor settings? They clearly don't think it's "worth it." Are they "spoiled children" too?
Cite?
My GOD man u r but an all time idiot. An idiot with the intellectual depth of a two week old mud puddle. U do as told.... PERIOD!!! YES MASTER!! Zero questions asked.
The Phucko Knows
You see, we live in a democracy. We elect representatives who delegate their authority to government agencies to govern us for our own good. Congress created the TSA to make rules for us to keep us safe on airplanes. So therefore, democracy good. Freedom bad.

The TSA is nothing more than a welfare program for near literate high school drop outs who couldn't pass the exams for postal worker.
Stolen laptops, cameras, watches, money and anything else of value can and will be stolen from you luggage by TSA losers and you have no claim to compensation for it either.
The TSA is a joke that couldn't find their own arse with a flashlight let alone catch a would be terrorist. Meanwhile they are busily terrorizing the customers who pay out big money to fly to a family funeral. The long and sordid record of criminality by these overpaid thugs with badges will continue until the people support and vote for those who would end this hideous joke on the American people.
You clearly do not work in the airline industry and have zero credibility to publish such disconnected and not factual information!
Why is it do you think airlines are keeping such a tight lip on the numbers of crew members infected, long term Covid health issues and the number of deaths ??? Hmmmmmmm ????????????
Why don’t you ask the families of all the fellow crew members that have been lost this year!
Mostly do to the fake narrative the airlines put out about how safe the aircraft is.
Why is it people have ALWAYS gotten sick and spread virus on the aircraft way before Covid..
Now that a deadly virus threatens their empire… it’s all the sudden the safest place to be?!
Easy for them to say as they all still to this day work from home while crew members have been forced to be on the front lines, dropping like flies !
Doesn’t take a genius to figure this one out.
PROFITS OVER PEOPLE!!
PROFITS OVER SAFETY!!
