Biden's Plan To Fight Omicron With Mass Testing Is Laughable Given the FDA's Approval Failures
Plus: Criminals have stolen $100 billion in pandemic relief funds, and colleges are planning to go virtual once again.

President Joe Biden urged Americans not to panic about the omicron COVID-19 variant during a speech on Tuesday, stressing that he had a plan to deal with the latest pandemic wave: mass testing. The federal government will purchase half a billion COVID-19 tests and distribute them throughout the country for free.
According to The Washington Post:
"This is not March of 2020," Biden said, referring to the early, pre-vaccine days of the pandemic as he spoke from the White House State Dining Room. "Two hundred million people are fully vaccinated. We're prepared. We know more."
The president still issued a grave warning to unvaccinated Americans who he said have a "patriotic duty" to get vaccinated, but he spent much of his speech reassuring Americans the country has the tools to avoid the extreme measures that typified the early months of the pandemic response.
To that end, Biden detailed new plans to expand coronavirus testing sites across the country, distribute a half-billion free at-home tests and deploy more federal health resources to aid strained hospitals as the omicron variant drives a fresh wave of infections.
There's just one problem with this plan: The tests won't arrive until January, by which point the omicron variant will have already ravaged the country, notes Reason's Ronald Bailey.
The White House could have gotten to work on this plan a little earlier—as recently as two weeks ago, press secretary Jen Psaki mocked the idea of having the government send free tests to all Americans. In many other countries, it's much easier to procure inexpensive COVID-19 tests, largely because those countries' regulatory apparatuses are not so slow-moving and bureaucratic.
Indeed, the real problem isn't that the White House has been too slow to mail tests to every American. The real problem is that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stymied efforts to approve various cheap, rapid test options—a costly mistake that has led to thousands of preventable deaths.
A new report by ProPublica details federal regulators' infuriating series of screw-ups. For instance, Irene Bosch, an MIT scientist, developed a reliable 15-minute test at the start of the pandemic that only cost $10—and would have cost even less if purchased in bulk. But the FDA refused to approve the test because it wasn't as accurate as the harder-to-come-by PCR tests.
Bosch's test didn't need to be the most accurate test: It just needed to be cheap and easy to mass produce. After all, people who tested positive could always get a PCR for additional verification. What's more, Bosch's test measured infectiousness itself:
David Paltiel, a professor at the Yale School of Public Health, said a significant part of the problem is that the FDA created a detailed roadmap for tests that give patients a close-to-definitive answer on whether they have COVID-19, but never created a separate framework for rapid tests that serve a different purpose: helping people get frequent, fast evidence of whether they may be contagious.
"The former are tests of infection; the latter are tests of infectiousness," Paltiel said. "They both share the same regulatory pathway — a pathway that was designed with diagnostic testing in mind and is littered with requirements that make no sense for the purpose they serve."
He added, "It's an outrage that rapid tests aren't dirt cheap and plentiful on grocery store shelves."
Meanwhile, the CDC thought it could invent its own, superior test—but government scientists screwed up the process, putting the country weeks behind the curve. Testing could have been an important tool for slowing the spread of COVID-19, but the federal government literally decreed that it was illegal to flood the market with tests unless they cleared an improbably, unnecessarily high regulatory burden. From ProPublica:
As ProPublica recently detailed, many companies with at-home tests have been stymied by an FDA review process that has flummoxed experts and even caused one agency reviewer to quit in frustration.
While E25Bio's test didn't catch quite as many cases as those now on the market, it could have been used to catch superspreaders, with warnings that a negative result wouldn't rule out infection. Experts told us that the test could have been a vital public health tool had it been produced in the millions in 2020 just as COVID-19 was racing across the country undetected.
"Since we didn't have other options, it would have been a very good test," said Michael Mina, an epidemiologist who followed E25Bio's early progress. "If we were going to war, and somebody was invading us, and we had a bunch of revolver pistols, and we didn't yet have the shipment of machine guns, hell yeah, you're going to pick up the revolver pistol. You do what you can when you need to in an emergency."
The government picked up the revolver and promptly shot itself in the foot.

Campus after campus is announcing that the next semester will begin online. From Inside Higher Ed:
The Universities of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at Chicago announced that they will start the spring semester online. Some students will be on campus, being tested, during some of this period.
At UIUC, this rule is to allow time to meet a COVID-19 testing requirement. The first week of class (Jan. 18 to 21) will be online. In-person instruction will resume Jan. 24.
The schedule at Chicago starts earlier, and so the first two weeks of classes (Jan. 10 to 23) will be online. Exceptions will be made for health science classes and other classes that must meet in person.
"This is not how we expected the spring semester to begin; however, if there is any consistency to COVID-19, it is its unpredictability," said a letter to the campus from Michael Amiridis, chancellor at Chicago, and other administrators.
Kean University will "transition to predominantly remote work and classes effective Thursday, December 23, 2021, through Sunday, January 30, 2022," the university announced. The spring term begins Jan. 18.
Gallaudet University announced that the first two weeks of spring semester classes will be online.
College campuses, where the predominantly young population is heavily vaccinated and at low risk of COVID-19, have nevertheless become enclaves of militant obedience to the strictest pandemic mandates. That will remain true for the omicron variant, even if it does indeed turn out that this strain is comparatively mild.

Criminals have stolen $100 billion in COVID-19 relief funds, according to the Secret Service. CNBC reports:
The stolen funds were diverted by fraudsters from the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program and a another program set up to dole out unemployment assistance funds nationwide.
More than $2.3 billion in stolen funds have been recovered so far, resulting in the arrest of more than 100 suspects who span the spectrum from individuals to organized groups, according to the agency. The government has shelled out about $3.5 trillion in Covid relief money since early 2020, when the pandemic began. …
"I've been in law enforcement for over 29 years and worked some complex fraud investigations for 20 plus years, and I've never seen something at this scale," said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Roy Dotson, who was named to the new role at the agency.
Dotson, in an interview with CNBC, said the ease of obtaining the funds has made it easier for criminals.
"There's no doubt that the programs were easily accessible online. And so, with that, comes the opportunity for bad actors to get into that mix," he said. "It was necessary to try to get these funds out to people that were truly hurting, and no fault of anybody."
When the government hands out trillions of dollars, it goes without saying that waste, fraud, and abuse will follow. Of course, billions were also spent legitimately but questionably: media companies claimed their share of the spoils, and school districts collected the funds and spent them on all sorts of non-pandemic things.

...he had a plan to deal with the latest pandemic wave: mass testing.
If only someone had thought of it earlier.
Had he named Bailey Surgeon General, we would have already forgotten that covid ever happened.
The president still issued a grave warning to unvaccinated Americans who he said have a "patriotic duty" to get vaccinated...
And the president's handlers are not above forcing your patriotism.
Fortifying patriotism.

Army to announce it has developed a single vaccine that protects from ALL variants of COVID and SARS
Do you want I am Legend? Cuz this is how you get I am Legend.
Jokes aside, how can they claim is is effective against mutations that haven't happened yet?
The intent is the key. They intend for it work, therefore they assume it will. For public policy, this is the Way (apologies to the Mandalorian).
Is the Mandalorian a progressive?
The series appears to be. But seemingly not as bad as the final trilogy.
hey I was pretty excited to watch Other Galaxy C-Span for five hours
The Way precedes any shitty disney/star wars series. See Bushido, Confucianism.
Taoism, really.
That seems to be more the Daily Mail writer’s hyperbole.
Caw caw!
Jokes aside, how can they claim is is effective against mutations that haven't happened yet?
It's based on a revolutionary new system that can grant immunity to virtually every human on the planet, against pathogens both real and hypothetical.
They will keep increasing the size of the protein until it works. Or some other unintended consequence happens. Whichever comes first.
As long as the Army doesn't distribute the vaccine too....
The real problem is that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stymied efforts to approve various cheap, rapid test options—a costly mistake that has led to thousands of preventable deaths.
I think we all know the holdout was for the right test kit manufacturer to come along (one who was owed millions in taxpayer dollars in a massive giveaway). If the market was allowed to provide kits then how would favored interests get that guaranteed payout?

Bill Gates says that he is canceling his holiday plans due to the spread of the omicron variant.
What?! He's not going to the edge of space like his peers?!
He ‘understands’ the software they use.
Not going to lie, I was a USAF Maintenance officer as a callow adult. I am way more afraid to fly now than before that. It’s not the people, it’s the complexity. And that is for 50s-80s tech. They really don't give a fuck anymore, do they? They know that people like Mike and Sarc will find a way to mentally accept it.
Again, check your privileged definition of democracy. If you think it means an open participation where people can express individual preference (and thus risk maintaining a systemic, historically unjust nation), then you are morally inferior to those who mean a system of authoritarian ideology, with a large, comprehensive state promoting the best interests of marginalized POCs.
And how would that result in any changed coverage, except at Fox News and the New York Post?
Of course, Linkins' main complaint in the article is that Biden isn't being enough of a partisan commie to steamroll the DNC agenda.
Literally nothing these people write can be taken in good faith.
Since Milbank and the WaPo lied about and demonized Trump daily for four years in order to sabotage his presidency and remove him from office, nobody should be surprised that Milbank and the WaPo are urging their left wing media propagandist allies to keep lying about Joe Biden in order to promote and preserve his failed left wing totalitarian policies and presidency.
We must destroy our freedoms to same them.

On the plus side, you still get to go into essentially the same debt for even less of a benefit.
How many college students have died much less been hospitalized? I bet it is not much different from the 10 year average.
But how many college students do other college students think have died?
In the annals of human history, we have never created a group of people, especially young people, with such exaggerated feelings about risk and harm, and such basic fear of normal life.
This is the generation that thinks disagreement is violence.
Which is odd, since many view humanity as a pestilence.
I think this generation might unfortunately think of itself as a pestilence. Imagine thinking you are a piece of shit - just for existing.

FREDDIE DE BOER: Why the Fuck Do You Trust Harvard? College admissions has, does, and will always serve only the institutions and their incredible greed.
https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/492387/
It’s all corrupt. All of it. From the top to the bottom. It is so insane that all of these people who are ostensibly so cynical about institutions, who will tell you that capitalism is inherently a rigged game, who think meritocracy is a joke, who say that they think these hierarchies are all just privilege, will then turn around and say “ah yes, the SAT is gone, now fairness and egalitarianism will reign.” The whole damn thing makes no sense – it is nonsensical to talk about equality in a process that by its most basic nature is designed to select for a tiny elite! How the fuck do you think it’s going to work, exactly, when the SAT is gone? They’re still nominating a tiny elite to enjoy the most outsized rewards human life has to offer. That’s destructive no matter who gets a golden ticket. By its very nature.
Removing testing requirements is so they can be more biased in their admissions. who doesn't understand that?
Just reminder that Jaron "Jazz Jennings" Bloshinsky, who was brainwashed in to believing that he was a girl at the age of three years old, was admitted to Harvard despite having no academic credentials whatsoever, and whose main accomplishment is being put on display like a carnival freak show attraction by his mother and TLC, in order to push the narrative that little kids should be put on hormone blockers and have their genitals mutilated in the interests of "diversity."
I hope they keep that show going, and document all the misery they've caused so the parents can have some money.
I honestly feel bad for the idiot, because he was made that way for the sole purpose of giving his shitty mother progressive cred with her lefty social circle. Deliberately stunted emotionally through hormone therapy, physically mutilated to be an queer nation poster child, and now he's blown up in to a deathfat because eating is literally the only physical pleasure he's capable of feeling now.
His ball-less father is just as responsible for not putting the mother in her place years ago and telling her to deal with the fact that he was either going through a phase, or they had a VERY gay boy on their hands, but either way she needed to back the fuck off on brainwashing him in to denying reality.
The pandemic has devastated U.S. population growth.
I guess people are wearing their masks on the wrong body parts.
I would have thought there'd be a baby boom with so many people stuck at home with nothing to do but fuck.
People stuck at home all day everyday, start hating each other. Domestic violence, divorce, alcoholism, all surged during the government lockdowns.
That's sad.
It is sad.
But what about the UPS man?
His “job” is a lot harder when the whole family is home, not just house wives.
That was before Xbox was invented.

Covid Panic is a Site of Inter-Elite Competition
to be the most consumed with fear of Covid is just another PMC laurel
https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/covid-panic-is-a-site-of-inter-elite
The immense popularity of overstating one’s personal risk from Covid, and of structuring one’s whole life around that exaggerated risk, can’t be explained in logical terms. It can only be understood with the animal logic of the force that dictates the living conditions of our entire elite class: their competition against each other.
...And so with Bogost here; that level of anxious catastrophizing always carries with it the quiet, throbbing need for the bad dream to come true. Covid is already bad, very bad. I am always so confused that so many people seem desperately to want it to be worse.
See the Vox piece linked to in the tweet above, where the headline reads “The world as we know it is ending.” The person who wrote this wrote it on a functioning computer, passed it off to her superiors as part of a more-or-less unaltered business operation, and it was uploaded to the internet, where it can be accessed by billions of people wireless through the use of technologies that require an exquisite amount of collaboration across vast distances of geography and circumstance. In other words, the world as we know it is apparently ending in such a gentle way that the most basic economic, technological, and communicative infrastructures of our civilization are puttering along nicely. If you’re someone who is not predisposed to think that the world is ending, and people are flailing their arms and pointing at a society that seems to be functioning very similarly to how it always has, wouldn’t you just tune out all the doomsaying? You can’t keep ringing the bell over and over again.
...I keep chewing on what function this disaster porn performs. It’s hard to say that it has any bearing on public health; does anyone think that the problem with the vaccine-hesitant is that they just haven’t been told loudly enough that Covid is bad? No. I do think that this worry is a performance, but I don’t think the unvaccinated are the audience. I think the audience is, as for so much of what these people do, their peers, other people in the broad world of the educated, the liberal, the upwardly-mobile if not affluent, the very online. These people compete against each other relentlessly, habitually, ritualistically.
I have made this basic observation in several different context before: our striving class is made up of people who are raised to compete and who structure their emotional lives around competing with each other. They go through the grindhouse of K-12 competition, running themselves ragged for scarce seats in the kind of colleges they feel they simply must attend. When they get there, they grind out the best grades they can get and busily occupy themselves with clubs and activities that will help them assemble the best resume for jobs or grad school. They might get a masters degree, or maybe do Teach for America or the Peace Corps, but sooner than later they enter professional life in fields where education, attitude, and vocabulary are hugely important, sectors of the workforce where your ability to convey that you are A Certain Kind of Person ia as important or more important than the quality of your professional output. And I find that, often, when they get to a certain station in life they have a kind of spiritual crisis because they now lack the structure and purpose that constant explicit competition provided. Academics, journalists, writers, researchers, nonprofit bureaucrats, “consultants” of all kinds, PR reps, marketing people - professions that are filled with people who find as they ease into middle adulthood that they are materially comfortable but miss the simpler existence of trying to climb the ladder. So they compete in less explicit arenas.
When this major international crisis arose, they felt a lot of legitimate fears and worries, which just makes them human. But when it became clear that the public health response to Covid involved denying ourselves things we wanted and enjoyed, including non-negotiably important things like in-person schooling and face-to-face human contact, they (subconsciously) saw an opening: if denial of human pleasures is virtuous, I can be more virtuous than my peers. If caution is noble, overcaution must be even nobler.
Panic porn satisfies the egos of a sadly dysfunctional type of person: those who see themselves at the center of existence and simultaneously as threatened and helpless. For this ego, the critical moment is NOW, all phenomena in the universe are directly controlled by humans, and all humans are out to get them. Their favorite scenario is some apocalyptic catastrophe, that they are either the direct target of, or can overcome through their own extraordinary powers of "caring" (not doing, since I already mentioned their self-assessed helplessness).
Thus loud, revolutionary marches with endless demands for others to make things right, often through magical means. But most important, each issue is all about THEM.
Reading "The Stand" today, what's remarkable is how hilariously outdated its Christian-themed worldview is amongst the elite classes these days, and that includes King himself. Even in trying to frame it within the Magic Negro vs. the Evil White Man trope common amongst lefty Boomers, King actually advocates for a moral framework that he and his fellow lefty elites never would cleave to now. Hell, in one part Mother Abigail even admits that her pride blinded her to the danger that was within the Free Zone's own inhabitants. It really portrays a call for humility that no lefty elite, especially in the neoyuppie upper classes, would ever heed. They simply traded one set of binary thinking for another--"democracy" versus "fascism"--where "democracy" really means communism.
Ultimately, these are very prideful people whose arrogance is fueled by stupidity, and this what drives them to try and force everyone to live by their ideology--where every setback is a potentially apocalyptic event, and every victory is a "mandate" to steamroll your worldview down everyone else's throat.
Somewhat OT, regarding how King has changed so much: It was very disappointing when King tried to defend Idris Elba as The Gunslinger in The Dark Tower, saying it didn’t matter if he was white.
Except if you read the books, the character Odetta is a racist (for good reason even) black woman, who, with Roland’s help, overcomes her hatred for white people. It’s a major theme early in the series. But apparently it became unacceptable to have a racist black woman, so hey, let’s just make Roland black so we can skip that whole part.
Still waiting for The Van
King has always parroted whatever the mainstream leftist line was at the time. Early in his career, this was post-war liberal arguments about color-blindness and equality; today, it's neo-Marxist wokism.
I think the most significant thing you can say about King is that Kubrick nailed him with his portrayal of Jack in The Shining movie; that character was clearly King's self-insert, and King has said that Jack was actually an inherently good person who was turned to evil by the hotel's spirits. He was pissed that Kubrick portrayed him as a repressed alcoholic and a child abuser, and the demons simply had to remind him of who he really was to set off his rampage--and what's notable is that Jack really doesn't go off the reservation in the movie until after he starts drinking again.
I think King was furious because he hadn't come to grips with his addiction yet, and Kubrick, being the psychologically obsessed person that he was, saw right through him and portrayed him accordingly. The other hilarious part of the movie, which is easy to miss, is that Jack is looking through a Playgirl magazine in the hotel lobby at the beginning.
It can only be understood with the animal logic of the force that dictates the living conditions of our entire elite class: their competition against each other.
One of the contradictions of post-modern neo-Marxists, which these balloonheads all are nearly to a man, is how agitated they get about competition while thirstily trying to outdo each other in the Oppression Olympics. That's really the whole point of all the LGBTQ bullshit that's accelerated in the last five years or so--it's a way to give white leftists an oppression category to attach themselves so that they're one of the Cultural Revolution's "red classes" rather than "black classes."
It's not really an accident that a lot of high school kids are categorizing themselves as "bisexual" or "non-binary" now, since these designations are now the social equivalent of popular fashion trends. My niece told my sister-in-law a few months ago that she thought she was bisexual, and my SIL flat-out said, "No, you're not, you're just trying to fit in with the rest of the idiots at school." A pretty impressive response considering she voted for Bernie.
Proudly declaring your level of mental illness is also part of this theater.
Perry contacted the alleged victim and “asked her if [she] wanted to come in [and] give a statement about what happened. She indicated that she would come in and provide a statement if there is video of the incident.”
"Absence of evidence is not evidence of, uh, never mind."
"There's just one problem with this plan: The tests won't arrive until January, by which point the omicron variant will have already ravaged the country, notes Reason's Ronald Bailey."
Testing isn't the only problem with the plan, and it isn't the biggest problem with the plan either.
"The new report (Report 49) from the Imperial College London COVID-19 response team estimates that the risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant is 5.4 times greater than that of the Delta variant. This implies that the protection against reinfection by Omicron afforded by past infection may be as low as 19%."
https://www.imperial.ac.uk/news/232698/modelling-suggests-rapid-spread-omicron-england/
The NFL is practically doing away with policies that conclude anything from positive tests. If being infected in the past is no protection against reinfection, what's the point of finding out whether you're positive? Do you imagine that asymptomatic people will self-isolate if they test positive at home? Do you imagine asymptomatic people will self-test? Short of lock downs, what do they expect will happen because Americans have 500 million self-test kits at home? That's the main problem with Biden's self-testing plan: It's pointless. He just wants to show that he's doing something.
We need new and improved vaccines for the omicron variant, and the progressives that run the Biden administration are ideologically opposed to big pharma and capitalism--and that may make them incapable of something like Operation Warp Speed, which is exactly what we need to fight the omicron variant. In short, the progressives are incompetent.
Bet on the Biden administration failing at this for the same reason Elizabeth Warren is blaming grocery store chains for inflation.
"Warren targets supermarket chains over high food prices"
https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/586710-warren-accuses-supermarket-chains-executives-of-profiting-from-inflation
Once the Biden administration admits that the vaccines we have are ineffective against the omicron variant, they'll probably blame big pharma.
In her defense, Kroger made almost 2% in net profit last year. The definitely explains the huge rise in the cost of groceries.
“the progressives that run the Biden administration are ideologically opposed to big pharma”
That totally explains why the most right-wing commenters here keep accusing the pharma companies of pushing the vaccines out of greed.
Cite?
Dee’s reached Tony level of just making up shit.
You seriously think that nobody at Pfizer or Moderna is working on a new formulation of the vaccines that targets omicron? You seriously think such a vaccine won’t get emergency approval once it has been developed?
So capitalism works?
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/28/moderna-says-an-omicron-variant-vaccine-could-be-ready-in-early-2022.html
Huh, it only took Moderna 48 hours to create one after it got the DNA profile from the chinks.
Wonder why it's taking several weeks to months for the other strains? BIG fucking mystery there.
And by the end of January we’ll be past the Omicron spike.

What are you babbling about? In the Red vs Blue Team partisan culture war, Team Blue is the one that has staked out the pro-vaccine position, while Team Red has stupidly decided to tolerate, and often promote, anti-vax idiocy.
Lol. God you are full of shit.

It’s very telling that Dee accuses everyone who’s anti-mandate as being anti-vax.

Yes.

what do they expect will happen because Americans have 500 million self-test kits at home?
Even if people did quarantine themselves, what are we going to do next week? 500 million tests is about 1.5 tests / person. What good does it do to test a single time? Are we supposed to test ourselves before any event out of the home? And it takes a month to get the tests out?
More useless theater.
Useless theater. Exactly.
They'd do better to give us a one month subscription to Netflix.
They're do better to shut the fuck up, offer some behind the scenes help, and act like it's over like most of the population. That is a harder sell when his main campaign goal was to "shut down the virus".
Two years to flatten the curve.
But what is the overall reinfection rate? As far as I have seen it is extremely low. Particularly if you mean actually getting sick from it twice, not just having more than one positive test. I think it's very important when talking about reinfection to specify which of those things you mean.
Zeb,
Look at that study I linked. It's all preliminary data, but everything we used to know seems to have gone out the window with the omicron variant.
The effectiveness of the vaccines we have now are 0% to 20% effective against omicron without a boost. We don't even have preliminary data about the hospitalization rate for the vaccinated or the unvaccinated.
Vaccinate need to test themselves, too, and if being infected with coronavirus in the past only confers immunity 19% percent of the time, what are we supposed to conclude from a positive test?
Also, what are we supposed to conclude from a negative test? Where can we go in public and not be infected with the omicron variant? The correct answer is nowhere because vaccination status only confers 0% to 20% protection against omicron (without being boosted).
Ultimately, the tests don't help us. The NFL is practically ignoring positive tests and looking at viral loads instead. Everyone's getting infected--despite a 96% vaccination rate. The NFL has found that positive tests are an impractical and useless metric to make these decisions because of omicron. And that's the same variant Biden is trying to combat with testing.
Had all the omicron symptoms and tested negative twice. Not sure testing is an answer to this. And fewer than two tests per person may be inadequate.
Not sure how testing is an answer to anything. At best it just drags out how long it will take for everyone to get it. And I'm not sure why that is so desirable. But mostly it just serves to keep people anxious about "cases".
I'm seeing tweets from celebrity and media dumbshits who caught the coof talking about how they tested multiple times a day, then popped positive on the 5th or 6th test in a 48-hour or less time span.
That tells me the tests are largely shit (if they're made in China, it's a neart-certainty) and can't be trusted one way or another.
For me, testing would have helped identify whether I had covid or not. That potentially would have guided my actions. Ultimately, the symptoms dictated what I did for that week.

People who openly-mindedly question them are not irrational. People who dig around for anti-vax talking points to prop up their partisan prejudices are irrational.

How about we all agree that hospitals have the right to turn away unvaccinated covid patients? They have freedom of choice too right?
I’m sure the unvaccinated would have no problem with that — and it would solve a lot of problems.
Who could possibly object?
Why should doctors and nurses continue to suffer?
Why should non covid patients be denied hospital beds? You have a heart attack or some health crisis you are denied a bed because someone listened to Joe Rogan?
Unvaccinated can’t possibly object because they don’t think the vaccine works. Everybody wins!

"People have argued this is a triage situation. If a vaccinated person is having a heart attack and a unvaccinated person is suffering from COVID-19 complications, why should the unvaccinated person get the one remaining hospital bed.
What if the vaccinated person having the heart attack was morbidly obese? Suddenly, the answer is not easy.
Or how about choosing between an unvaccinated person suffering from COVID-19 complications and the following:
a drunk driver who had just killed three kids
a violent felon shot by police after having just committed murder in their presence
a serial sexual predator shot by his latest victim's daddy
Is the answer clear?"- dbz77
Why can't all these people who posit "lifeboat scenarios" just build more "lifeboats" or in this case, build more hospitals and order more beds and propose getting rid of "Certificates Of Need" that get in the way?
The first rules of any Ethicist sould be: "Learn to build sea-worthy lifeboats!" and "Make sure your favorite book on a desert island is a book that tells how to build a boat from anything, how to desalinate sea water, how to identify and catch safe fish, and how to navigate the fuck off the island!"

In the last few weeks, I have become increasingly convinced that Kremlin has unfortunately made a decision to invade Ukraine later this winter. While it is still possible for Putin to deescalate, I believe the likelihood is now quite low. Allow me to explain why
...It would instantly reinstate Russia’s sphere of influence in that part of the world. No former Soviet Union state (aside from the Baltics) would dare to flirt with NATO or EU again
From a timing perspective, this might be the best time he will ever have to invade. US is distracted by domestic politics and new geopolitical confrontation with China
Energy prices are skyrocketing. Europe is wholly dependent on Russia’s gas and even the US is currently importing Russia’s crude oil. There is little chance there will be economic sanctions on fossil fuels as a result

...So, how do we do it? After all, these are private companies which we are informed that our principles require we allow to suppress us and keep us out of the public square because principles and reasons and principles. But here’s an alternative idea. Maybe, once we crush the Dems in 2022 and elect a non-crusty president in 2024, we can just mandate that they carry our stuff too. This idea is not really very conservative in the traditional sense, but there is a powerful counter-argument to that: Screw them.

Europe should handle their own problems and the US should stay out of this. Anyone feeling strongly opposed is free today to go there and volunteer for the border soldiers in Ukraine.
Imagine if, at some point the Biden White House or the Democratic leadership in Congress had actually acted like there was a COVID emergency in this country, and spent even a fraction of the effort used to fail to pass Build Back Better bill to instead pass a law along the lines of, say:
We would, then, currently have the same plethora of inexpensive tests in every drugstore that the Germans had back in September, and the Democrats with undivided control of the policy branches of the US government could actually point to an actual policy success in dealing with COVID other than "go ahead and distribute the vaccines Trump pushed."
Of course, to imagine that, you'd have to imagine an actual adult in a position of authority somewhere in the Biden White House or the Democratic congressional leadership.
“could actually point to an actual policy success in dealing with COVID other than "go ahead and distribute the vaccines Trump pushed."”
Don’t forget Biden yelling at and threatening the unvaxed.

Actually, this deserves a post of its own:
"Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said in a letter to leadership at Kroger, Albertson's and Publix that the grocery store chains are profiting off of struggling American families during the pandemic.
"While many Americans faced the loss of jobs, homes, and loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, grocery companies like yours saw immense gains through record sales and profits," Warren wrote.
"Your company, and the other major grocers who reaped the benefits of a turbulent 2020, appear to be passing costs onto consumers to preserve your pandemic gains, and even taking advantage of inflation to add greater burdens," she said.
----The Hill, December 21, 2021
https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/586710-warren-accuses-supermarket-chains-executives-of-profiting-from-inflation
It should be noted that using the government to squeeze profits out of food distribution always has the same impact, most recently and spectacularly exemplified by Hugo Chavez and Maduro nationalizing food distribution in Venezuela. The results was people being forced to choose between starving to death and fleeing Venezuela by the millions. No, Elizabeth's Warren's stupid letter won't have such a dramatic effect, but tamping down on grocery chain profits is a sure way to make things worse.
Because profits are the difference between revenue and costs, raising prices is just one way to maximize profits. The other way is to find ways to cut costs. Anything that increases the difference between revenue and cost increases profits, but because groceries are selling commodity products (a box of Kellogg's cornflakes is the same no matter where you buy it), increasing prices is likely to make your customers shop elsewhere. Therefore, the best way to maximize profits when you're selling commodities is to keep costs as low as possible. Killing the profit incentive, therefore, kills the incentive to keep costs as low as possible. The ultimate reason why it costs more for the government to do everything from build a bridge to launch a rocket is because they have no profit incentive.
In short, Elizabeth Warren is an idiot, and the people who find her antics persuasive or ignorant and stupid. The cause of inflation is not profits at the grocery store. The grocery business has a notoriously thin profit margin because of the commodity nature of their business. The cause of inflation is the money supply growing faster than the real economy, and that is largely due to government spending in this case. Elizabeth Warren is simply trying to distract us away from the problem of her, Bernie Sanders, and other progressives wanting to squander trillions on build back better. She's doing the same thing Chavez and Maduro did when their stupid policies triggered inflation--for the same reasons.
Sometimes I wish I were promoted to a status as far beyond my demonstrated abilities as Senator Warren has been beyond hers.
Then I wonder what, exactly, I'd do as God-Emperor of the Virgo Supercluster.
Probably say lots of stupid shit that most people would ignore.
P.S. Kroger operates 2,742 grocery stores in 35 states. It's the third largest grocer in the country behind Amazon and Walmart--but it's more of a pure grocery store play.
Kroger's net profit was 2.29% as of October 31 of 2020.
As of October 31 of 2021, Kroger's net profits have fallen to 0.75% (three quarters of one percent).
https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/KR/kroger/profit-margins
The cause of inflation is not Kroger's 0.75% net profit margin.
Elizabeth Warren is a buffoon, and the people who find her persuasive are ignorant and stupid.
Came here to mention the grocery stores typically operate on extremely slim margins anyway. I think the average is about 2%.
There's nowhere for groceries to absorb the added costs of inflation, not to mention absorbing the added costs of labor with minimum wage hikes across the country. AND many, many grocery stores are operating with extremely short staff, which affects their ability to operate normally.
Elizabeth Warren is retarded. Go after what scraps remain of grocery store profits, and grocery stores will close.
You can't be both knowledgeable and smart and still believe the things progressives like Elizabeth Warren say about the economy. She's fronting a church for unknowledgeable and stupid people who imagine they're getting the inside scoop from the elitist of the elite.
There is probably more goverment waste than proft in the S&P 500. I can't believe anyone is stupid enough to listen the the left on economic policy.
This. Medicare has more money lost to fraud than other major insurers have in revenue
I had an interesting conversation today with a friend about how we have turned the 7 deadly sins into cardinal social virtues.
Elizabeth Warren's the high priestess of Envy. Her entire schtick is based on driving hatred an envy of anyone who has more. But she's also a peddler of wrath and sloth.
It truly is a church of ignorance, and vanity.
I have a neighbor who was a local volunteer for Warren's failed 2020 presidential primary campaign. She's a HUGE Warren fan. Organized campaign meetings of other locals at her apartment. (90% women, 10% cucks, as you might expect)
She's about as ignorant on issues of business, economics, pubic policy, etc. as you would expect. Clueless. She's failed so hard in the private sector that she's ended up only being employable in a mid-level administration capacity at a university. And it's beyond pointless to try to explain anything to her exactly how or why Warren hasn't ever had a good idea in her life.
Warren was the Media's darling at the beginning of the Dem primary. Your description of your neighbor matches up well with the media.
I've mentioned Chavez here before. It's quite complex, but the short version is:
1. Set price controls on food because then the poor can buy more
2. When farmers find out price controls are lower than the cost of production, they stop planting and move to where they can get a job
3. Use oil money to buy food from elsewhere so you can maintain the cheap food prices. Economy becomes less diverse and oil is the ONLY export because people won't start a farm or industry when mandated prices are lower than production costs.
4. When the oil wells fail and global market prices decline you no longer have any local food production and no assets or fungible currency to buy more food elsewhere in the world*
5. People starve.
That place is like the second half of an Ayn Rand novel.
*note, they nationalized oil without compensating the companies that held the leases and owned the rigs and then gave it to political cronies. Since then Venezuela hasn't tapped any new oil resources and that infrastructure is crumbling, too, because nobody who knows how to do that is willing to work with them. So they fucked what was to become literally their only export industry as well.
Same happened in Zimbabwe after they ran the farmers off their land and "gave" it to people who didn't know how to farm but who supported the regime. Breadbasket of Africa and they were starving. Happened other places, too.
Going after food producers always turns out badly. Places that were net exporters of food suddenly cannot even grow enough to keep their people from starving.
It's a Red Herring.
Ignorance is no longer bliss. It is woke, bitter, angry, envious and delusional.
Seems like what Elizabeth Warren was trying to say was
"Since left wing Democrat lockdowns increased profits at your company (and other Big Box retailers) during 2020, you should now reduce your profits to protect the political asses of Joe Biden and other left wing Democrats."
Joe Biden was pushing Build Back Better as a solution to inflation!
Warren is trying to deflect attention away from runaway government spending as a cause of inflation because if things stay as they are, inflation is likely to be one of the biggest issues during the midterms.
The Republicans should bring back Reagan's use of the "misery index" (annual inflation rate + unemployment rate).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misery_index_(economics)
Carter invented the misery index.
Carter made the misery index incredibly bad.
Okun invented the misery index, and Reagan hanged Carter with it.
“A recession is when your neighbor loses his job. A depression is when you lose your job. And a recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his job.”
But "profit" has been a trigger word for at least a decade. For Liz and her followers, their quest will not end until they can regulate if not outlaw profits.
(To be fair, Liz has a background in academia, government, and, ahem, indigenous culture, where profit, in the most general sense, is not a goal.)

Since the French Revolution, the basis of Leftist thinking on economics has been that negative effects in the economy are not real. They believed bread shortages were not caused by poor harvests, but by shadowy conspiracies of bad actors deliberately screwing people over. There has always been a tendency for urban populations to lose touch and understanding with how exactly their food gets to their table, and they should always have what they want at the price they want, always. Warren is just the latest conspiracy theorist in this long and sad tradition.
"College campuses, where the predominantly young population is heavily vaccinated and at low risk of COVID-19, have nevertheless become enclaves of militant obedience to the strictest pandemic mandates."
Duh. College students are the primary customers of coddling, nanny culture, and now the loudest advocates of conformity to statist authority (as long as they can pick the authorities).
"There's no doubt that the programs were easily accessible online. And so, with that, comes the opportunity for bad actors to get into that mix," he said.

Yet again, Reason has ignored a very important news story detailing how two of the most corrupt and dishonest federal government officials (Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins) plotted to denounce and destroy truth telling scientists and real public health experts for authoring, endorsing and advocating the Great Barrington Declaration, which delineated how/why the unscientific and totalitarian covid lockdowns were disastrous for economies and public health. Tody's WSJ editorial (below) tops anything Reason authors or editors could have figured out or written.
How Fauci and Collins Shut Down Covid Debate
They worked with the media to trash the Great Barrington Declaration.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/fauci-collins-emails-great-barrington-declaration-covid-pandemic-lockdown-11640129116
In public, Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins urge Americans to “follow the science.” In private, the two sainted public-health officials schemed to quash dissenting views from top scientists. That’s the troubling but fair conclusion from emails obtained recently via the Freedom of Information Act by the American Institute for Economic Research.
The tale unfolded in October 2020 after the launch of the Great Barrington Declaration, a statement by Harvard’s Martin Kulldorff, Oxford’s Sunetra Gupta and Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya against blanket pandemic lockdowns. They favored a policy of what they called “focused protection” of high-risk populations such as the elderly or those with medical conditions. Thousands of scientists signed the declaration—if they were able to learn about it. We tried to give it some elevation on these pages.
That didn’t please the lockdown consensus enforced by public-health officials and the press. Dr. Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health until Sunday, sent an email on Oct. 8, 2020, to Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
“This proposal from the three fringe epidemiologists . . . seems to be getting a lot of attention – and even a co-signature from Nobel Prize winner Mike Leavitt at Stanford. There needs to be a quick and devastating published take down of its premises,” Dr. Collins wrote. “Is it underway?”
These researchers weren’t fringe and neither was their opposition to quarantining society. But in the panic over the virus, these two voices of science used their authority to stigmatize dissenters and crush debate. A week after his email, Dr. Collins spoke to the Washington Post about the Great Barrington Declaration. “This is a fringe component of epidemiology,” he said. “This is not mainstream science. It’s dangerous.” His message spread and the alternative strategy was dismissed in most precincts.
Dr. Fauci replied to Dr. Collins that the takedown was underway. An article in Wired, a tech-news site, denied there was any scientific divide and argued lockdowns were a straw man—they weren’t coming back. If only it were true. The next month cases rose and restrictions returned.
Dr. Fauci also emailed an article from the Nation, a left-wing magazine, and his staff sent him several more. The emails suggest a feedback loop: The media cited Dr. Fauci as an unquestionable authority, and Dr. Fauci got his talking points from the media. Facebook censored mentions of the Great Barrington Declaration. This is how groupthink works.
On CBS last month, Dr. Fauci said Republicans who criticize him are “really criticizing science, because I represent science. That’s dangerous.” He isn’t “science.” And it’s also dangerous for scientific officials to mobilize to quash dissent, without which it’s easy to make tragic mistakes. A scientific debate over pandemic policy was and still is in the public interest, especially during a once-in-a-century plague.
Focused protection of nursing homes and other high-risk populations remains the policy road not taken during the pandemic. Perhaps this strategy wouldn’t have prevailed if a debate had been allowed. But it isn’t enough to repeat, as Dr. Collins did on Fox News Sunday, that advocates are “fringe epidemiologists who really did not have the credentials,” and that “hundreds of thousands of people would have died if we had followed that strategy.”
More than 800,000 Americans have died as much of the country followed the strategy of Drs. Collins and Fauci, and that’s not counting the other costs in lost livelihoods, shuttered businesses, untreated illnesses, mental illness from isolation, and the incalculable anguish of seeing loved ones die alone without the chance for a family to say good-bye.
Rather than try to manipulate public opinion, the job of health officials is to offer their best scientific advice. They shouldn’t act like politicians or censors, and when they do, they squander the public’s trust.
Amazingly, I don't recall any of the so-called libertarians at Reason calling for the termination, indictment and/or prosecution of Fauci or Collins for committing scientific and public health malpractice (that helped destroy the US economy, especially small businesses owned by Republicans, and defeat Trump in November).
Fauci needs to go just not having the trust of half of the American people.
His job is to be trustworthy, and if he's lost that trust--for good reasons or bad--he can't do that job anymore.
He's an armless piano player. Whether he should have lost his arms is separate question from whether he can still play the piano, and Fauci just can't play the piano anymore.
And for torturing puppies. How are liberals okay with that?
And MO keys
He belongs behind bars.
"On CBS last month, Dr. Fauci said Republicans who criticize him are “really criticizing science, because I represent science. That’s dangerous.”..."
The danger here is Fauci coronating himself.
La science, c'est moi.

The federal government will purchase half a billion COVID-19 tests and distribute them throughout the country for free
If the government is purchasing them, they aren't free Robby. The cost is just hidden, and we're being forced to pay for them, whether we want them or not, at the end of the government gun.
^+1
Like "free" medical care, right?
Friedman? 'If you think medical care is expensive now, just wait until it's government-run.'
Give Robby a break. His mind is the product of the finest American schools.
You really think Robby is not aware of that?
Based on how he constructed his sentence, I would have to say Robby is either, in fact, not aware, or he is just parroting whatever talking points the White House Communications Office distributed (which is worse).
If he had written:
"The federal government will purchase half a billion COVID-19 tests and distribute them throughout the country."
I might give him the benefit of the doubt; however he did not write that.
He’s a libertarian writer for a libertarian magazine. He’s writing an informal blog post and you are micro-analyzing his use of the word “free” in a sentence.
He knows it’s not literally “free” and he knows his readers know it’s not literally “free”.
He’s a libertarian writer for a libertarian magazine. He’s writing an informal blog post and you are
micro-analyzingdefending his use of the word “free” in a sentence. Are they free or not? Because he said they were free. His word.
God you’re pathetic.
He’s a libertarian writer for a libertarian magazine.
Objection.
Assumes facts not in evidence.
You’re a moron, Tulpa.
I have no idea who or what a 'Tulpa' is; however, based on the sentence, as written, there is no evidence Robby is a libertarian, and if expecting a libertarian writer not to regurgitate White House Communications Office talking points makes me a moron, I do not think that word means what you think it does.
You are splitting hairs. Everyone knows what that sentence means and no one thinks that no money was exchanged at any point in the transaction. "For free" just means the person receiving a thing doesn't pay for it directly.
By the same standard, a product given away by a business as a promotion isn't free either because they had to pay for it.
The money to pay for it came from profits, not tax revenue.
Disagree Zeb. Robbie passed along the White House talking points as his own words, and he included the word “free” when it’s not accurate. And it’s not the first time lately that Reason has done this, treating talking points as reality.
If your biddy gave you a “free” box of ammo that he paid for, while it wasn’t free it was free to you. Having a government spend your money to give you something without an invoice at delivery is not free.
What if I didn't pay taxes? Then would it be OK to say it that way?
Maybe your buddy expects something in return. TANSTAAFL always applies. I don't think that means we can never use the word "free".
I totally get the point and agree. But I feel like you are just arguing against a very common usage which is kind of pointless.
Then you’d be having party A take something from party B to give it to you.
I’ve done it the other way with ammo. And tell them they owe me nothing. And never bring it up with them again. I usually have a lot. A few months ago, was looking for something else and found two cases of 9mm.
Yes. It is used that way often. Maybe an Overton window exercise is pushing back when media and politicians say this.
Biden can't catch a break. Reason has been pushing for mass test for almost 2 years. Now he sends everyone 500 million test kits for Christmas and it's another thing to knock him for.
How long until the testing is no longer voluntary though?
When they start doing the Chinese rectal tests.
*Tony has entered the chat*
Indeed, the real problem isn't that the White House has been too slow to mail tests to every American.
For a libertarian, that sounds like several real problems:
Why is the President our mommy?
Who is paying the bill?
When did Congress authorize that spending?
Are there any strings attached?
Shouldn't people make their own medical and spending decisions?
Criminals have stolen $100 billion in COVID-19 relief funds, according to the Secret Service.
More like criminals have dispensed $4 trillion in COVID-19 relief funds, after stealing the money from our children and grandchildren.
The Department of Education has vowed to keep schools open, despite omicron fears.
Which federal schools are those? West Point? Annapolis? The Air Force Academy?
Probably just those nasty Indian boarding schools out west, still trying to fill up unmarked burial grounds.
But enough about Canada.
Both here and there.
Reason # Lebbity-Lebben Umpteen-illion and One for keeping children the Hell out of Gummint Skoolz.
>>Of course, billions were also spent legitimately but questionably
lol how far are you looking back for legitimacy? taxation is theft.
>>in conclusion, legalize heroin
if you sprinkle the right amount in your molly it makes for a super smooth trip or so I've heard.
In the meantime, stay happy, stay free, and, in conclusion, legalize heroin.
Not that I disagree, but how was that a propos of anything, even in the Reason Roundup?
Robby couldn't keep his sleek, sexy 'do if he got a monkey on his back mussing it up.
alternatively slinging hash might explain how he pays for the upkeep
Upkeep of his hair or the monkey on the back? I wouldn't want hash grease in my hair or on a poor monkey. 😉
the coif. gotta be a wallet-denter
Look at that! Psuki slips up and lets us know the new talking points are to highlight deaths / hospitalizations rather than cases.
It only took them 2 years to get on board with what rational people have been doing all along.
Unfortunately the only reason they are doing it is because their approval is in the gutter and everyone is laughing at their horrible "case" numbers. Maybe highlighting a bunch of people who got a sniffle makes your administration look like it doesnt know what its doing?
See 10:30 AM above. San Fran hasn't gotten the memo, and they're trying hard to keep the fire going by playing 'fun with numbers'.
Surprising lack of muted lefty shitpiles here this morning, and no lies from turd.
Perhaps their masochism does have limits.
The federal government will purchase half a billion COVID-19 tests and distribute them throughout the country for free.
How do they know who the unvaccinated are so they can send the testing kits to the right people?
Bill Gates says that he is canceling his holiday plans due to the spread of the omicron variant.
LOL - you ain't got no holiday plans nerd boy! You found one woman who could stand the sight of your naked, pasty white, flabby body, you ain't gonna find another. And now that she's left you, you're all alone and doomed to remain forever alone.
I'd say you know he has the best sex robots, but Microsoft
BSoD. Calling a tech when his jimmy is still inside the MS sex doll must be a bitch.
"Criminals have stolen $100 billion in COVID-19 relief funds, according to the Secret Service. CNBC reports:
[...]
Dotson, in an interview with CNBC, said the ease of obtaining the funds has made it easier for criminals.
"There's no doubt that the programs were easily accessible online. And so, with that, comes the opportunity for bad actors to get into that mix," he said. "It was necessary to try to get these funds out to people that were truly hurting, and no fault of anybody."..."
Nobody could have seen this coming!
Up nex dems mandate online voting!

Notice how the first sentence of the following article was totally ignored by WSJ editors (many of whom are liberal Democrats) when they wrote their headline promoting more vaccines.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-booster-offers-substantial-protection-against-symptomatic-infection-with-omicron-study-finds-11640191103
"New data from Scotland and South Africa suggest people infected with the Omicron variant of coronavirus are at markedly lower risk of hospitalization than those who contracted earlier versions of the virus, promising signs that vaccines remain effective at warding off severe illness with the fast-spreading strain."
If we have a mild weather winter, vaccination will receive the credit.
Yes, Alex Jones will claim ((("They"))) are seeding the clouds with the vax and making the clouds Gay and turn into Rainbows. 😉
Hey, everybody! It's Rev. Artie in drag!
Bette Middler Apologizes to West Virginia Residents for 'Poor, Illiterate, Strung-Out' Tweet

Or maybe The Divine Ms. M is a FTM Trans who has adopted the name Rev. Artie.
Or maybe Rev. Artie married Bette and uses her as a 'beard' and she got hold of Artie's smartphone charging in the single-wide. That's a disgusting thought, Artie giving LGBTQ people a bad name.
The possibilities do make for fun speculation. 🙂
"urged Americans not to panic about the omicron COVID-19 variant"
Seems to me that Americans are pretty much over it. It's the authoritarian thugs who are in a panic perhaps because most Americans are beginning to realize that the theater is just playing the same skit over and over again and it's well past it's smell by date.
'Biden's Plan Is Laughable.' Clear, concise, and fact. The original headline is good, but handsy Joe the incompetent career grifter couldn't come up with a good plan for a bowel movement after two bowls of steamed prunes and a litre of coffee.
Let's just tighten that up a bit more.
It ain't rocket science. The 500 million tests are simply to produce enough positives (false and real of course) for Democrats to make the case that nobody can vote in person in 2022 period. It's ALL (now) about scaring everyone enough to be cool with mail in voting again, that's the ONLY way they can win..
Biden's Plan...Is Laughable
A more accurate statement.
Seems to me that Americans are pretty much over it. It's the authoritarian thugs who are in a panic perhaps because most Americans are beginning to realize that the theater is just playing the same skit over and over again and it's well past it's smell by date.

So, they have a cultural norm we have to respect, if not celebrate?
Jussie Smollett is a cultural hero!
And apparently, so is Ilhan Omar for marrying her brother. Unless he's the hero for taking one for the team by marrying her.
The sandwich was a hero.
Our favorite head wound victim said something about Manchin on one of the Sunday DNC talking points shows. It was bleeped out. Do you think she called him a "brotherfucker"?
How dare you.
