Brickbat: Back to the Island

A French court on the island of Reunion, located in the Indian Ocean, has fined actress and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot 20,000 euros ($23,000 U.S.) for describing some residents of the island as "degenerate savages." Bardot singled out the island's Hindu Tamil residents for sacrificing goats in religious ceremonies, calling them "a degenerate population still soaked in barbarous ancestral traditions."

Do the residents get those euros for hurt feelings? They could buy a lot more goats.
Pithy.
I wonder what the history of this sort of thing is in European law. Libel and slander are pretty old concepts, but they are usually assigned to an individual person.
But insulting a broad group of people?
Can I say "homeless people are dirty" in Europe? Or is that over the line.
What about "men are violent"?
As far as I can tell, this isn't even, like, a civil libel/slander suit. It appears to be a criminal fine. Her spokesman was fined too, for sending the statement to media outlets. The linked article is low on specifics, though.
I just don't get the concept. Canada is governed this way as well. Saying "Gingers are stupid" might get you charged criminally, even without a specific target. It seems really off. Europeans have always loved to insult each other. Now, it is a crime?
I wonder how and when that happened. Is it EU new... More recent than that even?

It looks like the FBI has already leaked confidential legal documents from their raid on Project Verified to the NYT.
The NYT puts a really cute spin on it... Accusing them of being "political spies" instead of journalists. astonishing lack of self awareness.. Or maybe heavy handed irony.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/11/us/politics/project-veritas-journalism-political-spying.html
Bonus: Verified is in the middle of depositions in a lawsuit with the NYT, so one can assume that O'Keefe's legal communication regarding the NYT case is also in the hands of the NYT.
Also still mindblowing (but more OT): the FBI had drones in the air over Kenosha protests and had high-resolution thermal video of the incident that it "lost".
So, either they, the FBI, just happened to have drones in the air over this one protest that they volunteered to the prosecution (and defense by proxy), they've had drones over Seattle, Portland, CHAZ, LA, Chicago, 1/6, etc., etc., etc. and we're getting drone footage minimally/selectively, *or* they deliberately had drones over Kenosha but deliberately did not have drones over Seattle, Portland, CHAZ, LA, Chicago, DC...
Also keep in mind, we're still less than a year away from the CIA dronessassinating a car load of children and aid workers.
Don't worry, I'm sure the FBI will shortly be raiding the offices of the NYT to investigate the matter of how they obtained O'Keefe's privileged information. Right after they finish raiding their offices to find out how they obtained Trump's stolen tax returns.
Isn’t “political spy” kind of the job description for a journalist? (Feature, not a flaw)
Or media assholes not even bothering to pretend any more.
It looks like they also went to the NY Post.
https://nypost.com/2021/11/11/project-veritas-legal-memos-show-strategy-of-avoiding-federal-law/
I'm mystified what the smoking gun is supposed to be.
And this is a bad thing... how? Wouldn't you generally want journalists to comply with federal law?
Again, this is a bad thing... how?
Really a shame the actual warrant the FBI was using cannot be published. It should describe exactly what they were looking for.
We know what they were looking for - they were worried that the diary might disclose classified information that Joe had blabbed to his daughter. And you know damn well Joe was blabbing every secret thing he was ever told to his family in order to impress them with the fact that he was A Man Who Knew Things.
The real degenerate savages on the island are on the court. The court was insulted to see its proud label being applied to ordinary islanders sans any legal degrees, powdered wigs or flowing robes.
“They sacrifice mere goats, while we sacrifice truth and justice. And yet she calls them them the degenerates? Merde! We’ll fix her wagon!”
Amen, Inigo
They should consider sacrificing her Methuselah looking self.
She certainly hasn't aged well. And as an "animal rights" activist, a milk bath for her would be out of the question.
Are you serious? For the ripe old age of 87, she's looking pretty good. And unlike our current president, who is a decade younger, she actually is lucid and spry.
I though truth was a defense against lible.
In the US, yes. In France (and many other countries), no.
Yes, you read that correctly. In much of the world, you can be criminally prosecuted for telling the truth. The idea of "American exceptionalism" is politically unpopular these days but the First Amendment protections we enjoy really are exceptional.
I've always loved when Europeans, and particularly Brits have said things like since we had to write it into law we dont have things like freedom of speech...
In the case of the Brits i pointed out that it was the propensity of the English to suspend or ignore the rights of subjects that inspired the some to demand the inclusion of a bill of rights.
Bardot singled out the island's Hindu Tamil residents for sacrificing goats in religious ceremonies, calling them "a degenerate population still soaked in barbarous ancestral traditions."
"And don't even get me started about the traditional killing of turkeys for Thanksgiving ceremonies!"
Old picture, from the 50s I'm thinking, but I'm going to keep it on my screen all fucking day.
this.
Well, my telephone rang it would not stop
It’s President Kennedy callin’ me up
He said, “My friend, Bob, what do we need to make the country grow?”
I said, “My friend, John, Brigitte Bardot
Anita Ekberg
Sophia Loren”
It would crertainly have grown in certain places.
I wonder if I could retroactively, from across the pond, sue my college organic chemistry prof for referring to the whole class as "godless heathens". Seems to me that counts as "hate speech", doesn't it?
I'd have taken that name as ae a mark of pride.
I never took college chemistry, but if one of my other profs had said that, I'd have called it an accurate prediction. Ex-altar boy, ex- lay reader matriculates at a Jesuit Uni, graduates as an atheist. [Insert Catholic in-group joke about the Jesuits being the best at making atheists.]
There was a time when the names Brigitte Bardot and Gina Lollobrigida were like magic. Now, no one cares. Somewhere, Sophia Loren is crying.
Let's not forget that the French were actually on this island before the east Indians.. so it is not indigenous rights at stake but imported customs brought by immigrants. She has every right as a French citizen to criticize.
I think she's been convicted of similar things is France.

LMAO Europeans are pathetic, whiny barbarians 😀
What's the hubbub all about? Aren't all French "degenerated savages"? Why should their colonies be any different?
Nice Blog,

They don't eat cows, do they?
In poorer countries goats are killed all of the time for meat. A dead goat is a dead goat, regardless of whether or not a religious sentiment is associated with its demise.
There used to be a Mexican Restaurant near me that served roast goat. I liked it.
