Put the Whole Department of Transportation on Paternity Leave
Pete Buttigieg attracted some criticism for taking time off. But it's telling that no one initially realized he was gone.

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, "has actually been on paid leave since mid-August to spend time with his husband, Chasten, and their two newborn babies," Politico reported on October 14.
What's mildly humorous about this is that, until the Politico report, no one much noticed that Buttigieg had been missing.
The Department of Transportation website has a section for speeches by Buttigieg. The most recent one listed was on August 9.
Washington has a well-earned reputation for shutting down for a vacation of nearly European proportions during the month of August, leaving summer interns to finish out their stays unsupervised amid the capital city's staggering humidity. Stretching that late-summer break stealthily into mid-October raises the question: If the rest of the Transportation Department's nearly 55,000 employees disappeared along with Mayor Pete, would anyone miss them?
The United States somehow managed to survive from independence in 1776 all the way to the passage of the Department of Transportation Act in 1966 without a secretary of transportation or a department of transportation. Americans in the cities and states had managed to transport themselves places even in the absence a federal department devoted to the task. The New York City subway had been built. The San Francisco cable cars were running. The Brooklyn Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the transcontinental railroad, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, the Sumner and Callahan Tunnels beneath Boston Harbor, the George Washington Bridge, the St. Lawrence Seaway—all were completed without the existence of a federal department of transportation.
After the department was created, progress in major infrastructure projects stalled. People point to airline passenger safety as a success, but the Boeing 737 Max fiasco and the September 11, 2001, hijackings call even that into question.
Any truly necessary functions of the transportation department could be returned, with relatively minimal hassle, to the Commerce Department, where those functions rested before 1966, or to the states, counties, cities, and towns.
In 2011, Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry attempted to propose closing three cabinet departments, but couldn't remember the third one. He ended up serving in the Trump administration as secretary of energy, heading a department whose elimination he had supported though couldn't recall during a televised debate. Recent presidents have added government units—the Department of Homeland Security, the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, the Space Force—rather than shutting them down. There were some exceptions. President Reagan proposed eliminating the Interstate Commerce Commission, which finally did sunset on January 1, 1996. President Jimmy Carter set in motion the end of the Civil Aeronautics Board, yet another federal agency that has proved, by ceasing to exist, that it was less than entirely essential to begin with.
Buttigieg was such a refreshing presence during the 2020 Democratic presidential campaign that he attracted plenty of serious interest notwithstanding his youth and his limited experience as mayor of South Bend, Indiana. The best service he could do the country at this point would be to follow in the footsteps of so many other working parents whose time away from the office during the pandemic inspired them to quit their jobs and stay home with their families. Imagine if Buttigieg were to emerge from paternity leave with the message that even the guy who was supposed to be running the federal transportation department didn't much miss it while he was gone.
The cost savings from getting rid of the Department of Transportation—$80 billion or $90 billion a year—could go toward tax cuts, deficit reduction, or financing the rest of Biden's "Build Back Better" agenda. Such an approach could build for Biden and Buttigieg a reputation that they are able and willing not only to add to government but also, when warranted, to reduce and reorganize the entrenched Washington bureaucracy.
If totally getting rid of the department seems too drastic, perhaps Biden and his allies in the Democrat-controlled Congress can start with a more incremental test. Let the rest of the Transportation Department's employees also take two months of leave, like Secretary Buttigieg did. If no one misses them, either, maybe they, too, are better off not planning a return to the office anytime soon. They could look for alternative employment in the private sector.

I know several people who are NOT wealthy but one of the two earners quit over the last 2 years.
It was a combination of lowered expenses now that they aren't driving into work, plus realizing how badly school was treating their kids, and one of them just perfectly timed the stock market in 2020 so they really have no problems taking care of the family. Other than that last person, the others are making do with a little less.
It's the geriatric parents who had kids at 40-60.
A coworker's wife quit her job during COVID, because she was not enjoying the hours, had two small children and realized her income was going mostly to pay for daycare which was not available during the pandemic.

Now, I'll be the first to grant that Buttigieg's actual presence might only have made the situation worse. But, it's hardly the case that his leave of absence is a story outside of this bigger failure.

How about starting with an actual test rather than just a joke? There is a reasonable constitutional rationale for some form of federal involvement but the appropriate tax base and operational level are state level not federal executive functions. So roll it into an interstate compact. If DoT does an effective job for states of benchmarking, leveraging transport systems, etc; then they can pay for it. If regulation/mandates are needed, then those are directly legislated not bureaucratically imposed. If DoT is useless, then no one 'national' will care if/when it dies.
I would agree. If we think it's unnecessary, the proper response is to trim it back. Don't replace attrition. Transfer people to other departments. Reduce the hundreds of employees to a dozen. Then, the actual duties of what should be mostly a communication office and middleman will emerge. What's important will still get done.

The whole point of politics is not to accept trade-offs, not even to admit they exist. If you were to ask Biden which is the most important part of his BBB plan and what he'd be willing to give up in order to get it, he literally would not understand the question. It's all equally most important and so is every other single thing the government does. You can't somehow magically spend less money, that's like negative money and that's mathematically impossible! Look at the fact that the GOP is going to declare victory if they can manage to hold the budget increase to $2.2 or $2.5 trillion, not a single one of them can fathom the idea of cutting the budget.

Buttigieg's candidacy actually got a lot more interesting after the Iowa Caucus debacle, when it was revealed that he had some rather shady connections to Democratic dark money orgs, including the one who made the voting app that went haywire that day. Throw in the fact that he was an intel officer in the Reserves, during a time when the Democrats had fully embraced the security state to the point that HALF their candidates in 2018 had connections to these groups in some way, and it looks a lot more like his media profile was the result of back-channel politicking and influence-peddling.
That's the only reason I can see that a mayor of a small university city like South Bend ends up being considered a serious candidate to run the entire country. And as the last two months show, they don't even need him to run his own cabinet. Maybe the Dems really should have endorsed him rather than Biden, since they could have used his kids as a shield for the Afghanistan debacle.

I had a total of three days off for both of the two kids. Of course they were born approximately two years apart. The kids turned out pretty good if I do say so myself. At least I still like them. My position at work was important enough that others depended on me being there. 2 months? Nothing I would even dream of taking. And the first two months, there were a lot of nights being up at midnight to 3:00 am feeding the kids. Yes, I had to take turns so my wife could recover at times. It is what a man would do for his family.

Buttigeig's only achievement as Mayor of South Bend, In. was to create bicycle paths. That's it. The citizens of that city were not impressed. At all.

The nations major highways from coast to coast were created without the Dept. of Transportation. The bridges, the airports, the tunnels, even the rail roads. This like so many other bureaucracies are a waste of taxpayer's monies. They either accomplish nothing worthy or even manage to make situations worse through incompetence.
Back in the 1970s the government had to take control of the teamsters Union, they were so corrupt. Ronald Reagan fired the striking air traffic controllers immediately after taking office.
And now containers are so backed up in the ports, there aren't enough semi tractors legally available to remove the containers that are stacked up because of the stupidity and arrogance of the liberal government of California. Only 50% of the semi tractors are available. Yet Newsom in all his arrogance and posturing refuses to even make an exception in this circumstance. Newsom is in fact, holding the rest of the country hostage and endangering commerce and people's livelihoods because of it. There is simply no way to clear up the congestion at these ports anytime in the near future. Newsom could care less. More businesses are going to fail, like it or not, this Christmas shopping season is going to turn out to be one of the most dismal turnouts yet. Barren and empty shelves are now showing up at dollar stores and even major super market chains.

Every time they pass a spending Bill, they have to hire more Government employees at all levels to "administer" it. This is why the Rent Assistance funds are still sitting there six months later. One, they have to figure out who gets to manage the "new" employees. Two, they have to figure out where to put the "new" employees and three, they have to hire the "new" employees. All of this is "overhead" that is paid for by the spending bill. It is estimated that only about 30% of the money goes to where it was intended to go. The rest is eaten up in "overhead".
Mayor Pete was hired due to diversity not due to any modicum of experience in transportation. It not surprising with Mayor Pete being the literal figurehead taking time off that he would not be missed.
Mayor Pete has as much experience as Hunter Biden did when he was on the board of then Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Perhaps Hunter Biden should step in while Mayor Pete is out?
What is worse, nepotism or the virtue signaling appointment. Neither knows what they are doing other than collecting a check and attempting to remain in the public eye for future offices.
You are not going to save 80 billion if you fold Transportation back into Commerce. You are going to save some on redundant administrative personnel and such, but the projects the Transportation oversees will still go on.

DOT is high on the federal departments that need to be eliminated, outright. They haven't transported anything, and clearly with the Blue Falcon absent for two months without anyone noticing, we really don't seem to need him, or his department.

As a former highway official I can tell you that there are many good and talented people in the DOT. But you could easily get rid of just about all of them. Much of what they did made sense in 1955 when the interstate highway system got started. Now all they do is add administrative overhead to something the states could easily do without their "help". I don't doubt that much of the rest of the DOT is the same or similar, people doing a job that once needed doing but no longer has much, if any, value. Related.. I once had a meeting with EPA people who wanted to get me involved in a make work project and they were explicit that they needed something to do to justify their jobs. They were nice people, probably talented, but the Federal GVT is vastly oversized, over staffed and over paid. It is also far too intrusive on states and citizens rights and prerogatives.

As a retired federal employee, you could shut down at least half of the Federal government and no one would notice, though after a while, they would notice a general improvement in their lives.

Glib statements like that above are not only easily answered, but also serve to show how facile much of the libertarian arguments are.
First, to answer the silly question. The first to miss them would be any and all commercial pilots whose calls to ATC would go unanswered. After landing, if they were lucky enough to be able to work things out between themselves without any catastrophes, the next group who would miss them would be the travelling public who would be limited to private intercity bus travel. And this is not a minor part of the DOT. American air traffic controllers make up a little over half the 55k DOT employees. The ATC is part of the FAA which makes up 80% of the DOT.
That the US air system would be effectively shut down would admittedly make it hard to notice the lack of development and certification of avionic systems and aircraft design. Of course, we could then have to allow self-certification for all transport systems by those whose interests are almost entirely pecuniary.
The thing is, as much of the DC-based federal bureaucracy, the DOT is an umbrella organization. This part is limited to about 1400 employees.
While there is a significant difference in total size, one might make a comparison to say, Reason Foundation which, if counted as the DOT is, would include as employees everyone who publishes Reason Magazine, Annual Privatization Report, Privatization Watch, and Innovators in Action, and Annual Highway Report (a weird tie-in to the DOT?), anyone involved with the Drew Carey Project, the various symposia and prizes, etc. Anyone visiting the foundation offices would undoubtedly come across a number of people whose jobs would seem quite esoteric to many people unfamiliar with how foundations are run but most of which have a real function in the long term. And a vacation lasting a couple of months by those at or near the top would certainly pass unnoticed by those perusing Reason Magazine.
Attacking an institution by using the inevitable ignorance by most people for systems outside their own expertise to claim uselessness based on the fact that much of such employee's functions are inscrutable to them is an easy, cheap shot. Every production worker who has had the occasion to walk through the corporate offices of even the best-run company would be highly dubious of what exactly all those people do. But it is simply a fact that the loss of a key person, while certainly not noticed in production over the short term, could be disastrous in the long term.
That being said, there is plenty of well-earned criticism to be pointed out against the over-weening government. It's just that "those clowns in Washington" type meme is below you.
