Brickbat: Maybe Next Year

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said foreign tourists won't be allowed back into the country until 2022 at the earliest. The country won't fully reopen its borders until at least 80 percent of the population 16 and older is fully vaccinated for COVID-19. And then, Morrison said, it will give priority to skilled workers and students. On the bright side, Morrison said he will allow Australian citizens and residents to travel overseas for the first time since March 2020. But only if they are fully vaccinated.

Both Australia and music were so much better off when this guy was leading The Doors. (Yes, I know the PM’s first name isn’t Jim, but I still suspect Morrison didn’t really die—he just went into hiding, changed his appearance, and eventually wound up in Australian politics.)
Australian cyclists are stuck in Europe for the winter as they are not allowed to return home.
Unable to return home, they are spinning their wheels…
I can see a government limiting who can enter the country but when they won't let you leave the alarm bells should be ringing loud and clear that you're no longer living in a free country.
Yeah, that's creepy as shit.
Insert obligatory comment about Oz having started out as prison colony.
Will wager $20 that restrictions will remain after they reach 80% vaccinated. That “fully” vaccinated is going to be a moving target.
The Federal Government has less say over the matter than they do here. They're in an awful spot down there, it's panic and groupthink exacerbated by their (usually beneficial) federalism. I won't be surprised if Australia opens up but the states won't actually let you leave the airport.
States won't let you travel to other states. Some cities won't let outsiders across the city limit. It's fricking crazy.
Usually federalism means different governments get different powers. States don't have the same powers as the national government, cities don't have the same powers as the states, etc. But in Australia it seems like every tiny jurisdiction has exactly as much power as the nation as a whole.
It's not a nanny state, it's a parent state. "No you can't leave your room until you finish your brussel sprouts."
Upside down federalism.
Nice to see a country so wealthy can completely shut down their economy for two whole years.
Dystopian shithole won’t allow tourists to visit dystopian shithole
Anybody, anywhere know any Australians who like the opera?
Slightly more curvature and the Opera House would look like The Hall of Doom.
the rats are six feet tall, hop on hind legs, and can be violent ... and the dingos eat babies. why go?
I can see a Texan who was denied an abortion going specifically for the dingos.
