COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations, and Deaths Fell Significantly in September
Plus: Why partisans want civil war, Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR, and more...

Finally, some good news. The past month may have felt like we were still locked in an unwavering delta variant surge, what with some major cities imposing new restrictions, an array of alarming news coverage, and vaccinated people still seeming to catch a lot of breakthrough infections. But September actually saw some very good news on the COVID-19 front.
In the U.S., new daily cases have dropped by about 35 percent since September 1, according to data from The New York Times.
Worldwide, new daily case numbers have fallen by 30 percent since late August.
In addition, the number of people hospitalized in the U.S. with COVID-19 has dropped by a quarter over the past month.

Hospitalizations "are still at levels not seen since the winter, before vaccines were widely available," notes The Washington Post.
However, they've been on a downward trend for weeks.
The way hospitalization data are trending may see at odds with constant (and ongoing) news reports that medical facilities in various areas are overcrowded. But these reports may warp American perceptions, giving the impression that the country as a whole is seeing a prolonged period of surging COVID-19 hospitalizations when it's really select places—one after another—dealing with short-term increases.
And, with a decrease in case counts and hospitalizations has come a decrease in COVID-19 deaths, as well.
"Daily deaths — which typically change direction a few weeks after cases and hospitalizations — have fallen 10 percent since Sept. 20," notes The New York Times' "It is the first sustained decline in deaths since the early summer."
These decreases are part of a pattern that Leonhardt calls "Covid's mysterious two-month cycle":
Since the Covid virus began spreading in late 2019 cases have often surged for about two months — sometimes because of a variant, like Delta — and then declined for about two months.
Epidemiologists do not understand why. Many popular explanations, like seasonality or the ebbs and flows of social distancing, are clearly insufficient, if not wrong. The two-month cycle has occurred during different seasons of the year and occurred even when human behavior was not changing in obvious ways.
The most plausible explanations involve some combination of virus biology and social networks. Perhaps each virus variant is especially likely to infect some people but not others — and once many of the most vulnerable have been exposed, the virus recedes. And perhaps a variant needs about two months to circulate through an average-sized community.
Human behavior does play a role, with people often becoming more careful once caseloads begin to rise. But social distancing is not as important as public discussion of the virus often imagines. "We've ascribed far too much human authority over the virus," as Michael Osterholm, an infectious-disease expert at the University of Minnesota, has told me.
The two-month cycle can be seen in countries around the world and in states around the U.S. For instance, the delta variant started surging in many Southern states in June, then began retreating in August. In July, the delta variant started tearing through more states outside the South…then gradually began getting better in September.
Across the U.S., there were 210,995 new cases of COVID-19 recorded on September 1, according to the Times data. The seven-day average number of new cases then was 166,105.
On October 1, there were 125,860 new cases of COVID-19 reported, with a seven-day average of 109,192 new cases.

Who's to blame for extreme partisanship? Conservative writers David French and Jonah Goldberg both tackle this question in their latest newsletters. French's column is pegged to a recent poll showing high percentages of Trump voters and Biden voters are itching for civil war:
Why would they even contemplate taking such a drastic step? Well, the poll provides the answers, and they're not surprising. Competing partisans loathe each other and view the opposition as an existential threat. This also isn't new. It's been tracked in poll after poll for year after year. This one found that a "strong majority" of Trump supporters falsely believe there is no real difference between Democrats and socialists. A majority of Biden voters falsely see no real difference between Republicans and fascists.
What this poll tracked better than many others is that the mutual loathing is based more on emotion than policy. In fact, the poll found that majorities of Trump voters expressed support for most elements of the Biden infrastructure and reconciliation plan. Even the least popular plank (supporting unions by banning state "right to work" laws) garnered 42 percent support from those who voted for Trump.
Yet broad consensus on the most important legislation now pending in Washington didn't stop 80 percent of Biden voters and 84 percent of Trump voters from viewing the opposing party as a "clear and present threat to American democracy."
We've seen it time and again. The combination of malice and misinformation is driving American polarization to a fever pitch. While there are real differences between the political parties, a fundamental reality of American politics is that voters hate or fear the opposing side in part because they have mistaken beliefs about their opponents. They think the divide is greater than it is.
Whole thing here.
"The bases of both parties, each in their own ways, crave dumbed down 'solutions.' Our elites are indulging them," writes Goldberg, pointing to exceedingly stupid recent comments from Sen. Marco Rubio (R–Fla.) and from U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance.
Authoritarian, totalitarian, monarchical, and even anarchical societies have elites. And so do democracies. Among the ranks of elites in America are these people called "senators." Rubio is a member of this elite club. J.D. Vance is already a member of one faction of the elite—he's a rich and famous former private equity guy and author. He wants to join Rubio's club. But he goes around campaigning against elites and elitism while, in effect, arguing he should be promoted to a higher rung of the elite.
What does this have to do with idiocy?
Simply this: Our elites are actively cultivating idiocy, both in the Greek sense and in the modern moronic sense. The bases of both parties, each in their own ways, crave dumbed down "solutions" swathed in the gossamer of gobbledygook and rationalized by irrationalism. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is only figuratively talking out of her ass when she mumbles magic incantations inspired by the mumbo-jumbo of modern monetary theory. But she gets closer to literalism when she joins other elites at the Met Gala with "tax the rich" scrawled on her backside. I get that "tax the rich" is just a slogan—but it's an idiotic one given that we do, in fact, tax the rich. But if you're an idiot in the Greek sense, someone who doesn't know much about politics or public finance, you might take that slogan literally and think we don't.
When conservatives say we shouldn't add trillions to the national debt, progressives respond, "You didn't care about the debt when you were in charge." And they're right! But this response is sophomoric: You were horribly irresponsible with the credit card, so now it's our turn to be horribly irresponsible!
The politicians—in both parties—who are the thirstiest for social media virality sound like Bart Simpson running for class president against Martin Prince. "He says there are no easy answers! I say he's not looking hard enough!"

Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR. Saule Omarova, President Joe Biden's nominee for comptroller of the currency, "graduated from Moscow State University in 1989 on the Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship. Thirty years later, she still believes the Soviet economic system was superior, and that U.S. banking should be remade in the Gosbank's image," notes The Wall Street Journal:
"Until I came to the US, I couldn't imagine that things like gender pay gap still existed in today's world. Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there. Market doesn't always 'know best,'" she tweeted in 2019. After Twitter users criticized her ignorance, she added a caveat: "I never claimed women and men were treated absolutely equally in every facet of Soviet life. But people's salaries were set (by the state) in a gender-blind manner. And all women got very generous maternity benefits. Both things are still a pipe dream in our society!"
Sure, there was a Gulag, and no private property, but maternity benefits!

But September actually saw some very good news on the COVID-19 front.
THE MANDATES AND LOCKDOWNS ARE WORKING.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Maybe Joe can land a helicopter on a hospital ship with a big banner. Too bad Cuomo can't join in.
Cuomo couldn’t make it because he has his hands full.
You might have something if all mandates and lock-down's just started in September. Never-mind they're completely a violation of the U.S. Constitution and concepts of Individual Liberty.

Pretty good considering the OSHA vaccine mandate hasn't started yet.
Most of the country is already under vaccine mandates in order to work and travel, and has been for the better part of 6 months while case exploded with 60% of them being among the vaccinated as I pointed out to you yesterday. But keep licking those boots you pathetic Nazi piece of shit.
The way hospitalization data are trending may see at odds with constant (and ongoing) news reports that medical facilities in various areas are overcrowded.
(Understaffed.)
The healthcare worker vaccine mandates (both public and private) are partially a central-planning attempt to alleviate that, taking advantage of the exposure guidance for the vaccinated being far, far more lenient than for the unvaxxed. Like most centrally planned solutions, it is having adverse effects which could not possibly have been anticipated.
You spelled "could have been easily anticipated, and was" wrong there at the end.
Notice that the hospitalization and death rates are almost 1/3 lower than this winter's surge, and yet we were never treated to constant hand wringing about hospital capacity this Christmas. Why, its almost as if there was some sort of ulterior motive to the reporting.
https://idahocapitalsun.com/2021/10/03/today-in-idaho-hospitals-and-covid-19-patients-er-visits-and-capacity/
Meanwhile what is going on in a red state where about half the adults are refusing vaccination, and self-medicating, to own the liberals:
“Idaho health care workers told the Sun this week that, while they remain able to care for any patient who comes through the door, their ICUs were overflowing into areas not previously used for intensive care.”
“Nurses and doctors told the Sun that COVID-19 patients are arriving at the hospital sicker, after attempting to treat themselves at home with unproven or harmful remedies.”
“Almost every person hospitalized with COVID-19 is unvaccinated.”
Idaho again? I remember the last time you linked to an Idaho COVID panic-porn article and it turned out the hospital was not overwhelmed in any way shape or form. At least this time you quoted the portion that says the hospital is still not overwhelmed in any way shape or form and saved me the trouble of pulling the quote and shoving it up your ass. It's hilarious you thought you made a point though. Understaffed rural 200 bed hospitals in the middle of West Bumfuck experience a "surge" and have to put some people in other parts of the hospital instead of their 3 ICU beds. But thankfully we have anonymously-quoted "doctors and nurses" to tell us that it's all because of the anti-vaxxers taking that dangerous, side-effect-ridden horse drug ivermectin.
Whatever, Tulpa. Muting your new account.
Ooooh! You got him!
Mike likes to pretend he has real power, just like a grown up dictator.
Good to see you're still too autistic to distinguish Tulpa from anyone else who routinely bashes your brains in rhetorically around here. Thanks for letting me know that I'm under your skin and driving you to hide in your safe space like a pathetic faggot, that'll surely stop me.
Let's find some rural clinic with a tiny amount of capacity, and pretend that it's indicative of an overall trend.
Also that we're honest when we make transparent arguments like this over and over.
White Mike self-owns by citing an article that doesn't actually say what he's trying to promote.
You keep repeating this story even though you've been told what the story is actually about. The ICUs there are not overrun with Covid. They issued the decision to reduce elective surgeries to prepare for a surge. Nothing more than that. You've been told this over and over. Is this another Fire Extinguisher moment?
Keep cherry picking. Also, tell us about fire extinguishers and horse dewormers.
My rural hospital said last week that they have 0 people hospitalized for covid.
Good for your rural area!
Everyone is dead!
That is one way to reach 0.
See it's kinda like the rural area you had to dig around the entire fucking internet to find and makes you look like an idiotic clown.
To own the libs, eh?
Idaho: 34% beds free, 19% taken by covid patients.
https://protect-public.hhs.gov/pages/hospital-utilization
From that very link -
Idaho - 9% ICU beds free (=27), 60% of ICU beds in use for Covid.
Comparing ICU/inpatient (in Idaho)
Covid - 192 in ICU/739 in general inpatient - 26%
non-covid - 101 in ICU/1876 in general inpatient - 5%
ICU utilization is the problem for covid - not general hospitalization. Those who get admitted to hospital for covid are FAR more likely to just be waiting in line to get into ICU. They are FAR sicker than the average inpatient.
"Who's to blame for extreme partisanship? Conservative writers David French and Jonah Goldberg both tackle this question in their latest newsletters."
Jonah Goldberg sure has come a long way since writing a book called Liberal Fascism.
#LibertariansForEmbracingNeocons
Did FDR (and his early hero, Mussolini) promote open borders?
I don't think Jonah's point is wrong. I think he is a bit blind to his own elitism, and that led him to overreact to Trump, while excusing all of the times that Elites like him at National Review pissed on conservatives and declared it to be raining.
Nevertheless, he is right that the partisanship is encouraged by both sides because win or lose, the elites are getting their paycheck. Sure they'd rather be in charge, winning the game, but their worst case scenario is that some non-member of the club gets the ball.
Jonah admits to being an elitist.
"I proudly plead guilty to the charge of thinking that society should be run by elites."
"The only question is who gets to be a member of the elite—and, I suppose, why and how they get there."
"Anybody can know the truth. What makes you a deserving member of the political elite is standing for it—and dealing with it. "
https://gfile.thedispatch.com/p/ratifying-the-idiocracy
What makes you a deserving member of the political elite is standing for it—and dealing with it
Gotta be the funniest thing he's ever written. He's a comedian, right?
Right!?
Goldberg and French are neocon warriors. I think that they're true conservatives under all that, but their first allegiance and love is for the military industrial-complex and globalism.
They also don't understand that Wall Street, the banks, big-big business and the multinationals now see their futures are with corporatism, rather than the free market. Government regulations and alliances will hand their boards and CEOs far more power and wealth than they could have previously dreamed of, but Goldberg in particular can't wrap his head around it.
Oh my! Sohrab Ahmari is going to have a field day with this:
French's column is pegged to a recent poll
He'll be calling for David French to be strung up or stoned "like in old country of Iran."
Maybe he should just be summarily shot in the face like we do here in the civilized world, right you bootlicking faggot?
I'm not calling for anything to be done to David French except maybe to be ignored.
Sohrab Ahmari is the one who's against "David Frenchism" and who savors Fascist boot leather. Maybe you two could share a Jackboot together over candlelight, you homophobic asshole.
But these reports may warp American perceptions, giving the impression that the country as a whole is seeing a prolonged period of surging COVID-19 hospitalizations when it's really select places—one after another—dealing with short-term increases.
I'm beginning to wonder if the misconceptions from the reporting might be a little bit by design.
Perhaps, but not "intelligent" design. More like Creationist News.
Exactly. Maybe even the Hindu version with turtles all the way down.
This one found that a "strong majority" of Trump supporters falsely believe there is no real difference between Democrats and socialists. A majority of Biden voters falsely see no real difference between Republicans and fascists.
Ironically, both parties are both those things, as evidenced by the next paragraph.
So, its late 1941 all over again, and I guess we have to choose between joining the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. Fun.
Or try to flee to a free nation like the USA... oh damnit

As Major General Stillwell said as he got out of the movie theater:
” What a mess! What a God damn mess!”
The really fun part of this is that fascism is a left wing (government control) concept. The democrats as a party are not really socialist, in that outside a couple very extreme politicians, they do not advocate taking over the means of production. They follow the fascist line of leaving title to the means of production in the hands of corporations, but having the federal government control what those corporations do.
The Republicans are neither fascist nor socialist, they are merely clueless.
Seriously. What is the supposed new definition of fascism anyway?
Democrats are facsists and republicans are light pseudo facsists.
Facsism minus nationalism triumphed 100% in the west.
Fascism definition is - a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.
exalts nation - Republicans
often race - Democrats
KEY ELEMENT HERE ... "above the Individual" - 100% Democrats and democracy.
Centralized Autocratic Government - 100% Democrats taking everything Nationally.
Social Regimentation - 100% Democrats
Forcible Suppression of Opposition - 100% Democrats as-if censoring the sitting president doesn't knock that door over.
Now since Republican's don't exalt their 'national' pride "above the Individual" but instead find that the USA as a nation exalts Individualism; even the first part is 100% Democrats.
Democrats are fascist - and they are socialist - and they are National = Nazism 100%..... There are a lot of RINO'S in politicis who give into the Nazi-Push but many don't. The parties platforms (Democrats don't honor Individualism AT ALL; It's all [WE] mob take-over, and power) says it all.
This started during the Obama years when Democrat party members were put on the boards of GM and several Banks as we came out of the Auto bailouts and Financial Apocalypse.
From the weaponization of the surveillance state to the usurping of private industry, it is shocking what happened behind the scenes while Americans were enamored with Obama. The funny thing is that I don't think Obama really was much part of it. He got paid off for his troubles, but his net worth is $70 Million- that's piker's sums, compared to the wealthy elites running the show behind the scenes.
True, but thing that's been notable in the last 20 years has been obscenely wealthy people getting more involved in politics. The intersection of cheap credit, such as a decade-plus of ZIRP loans from the Fed, real estate bubbles, and the explosion of the tech industry in particular seem to have created a particular elite class running for office that we didn't really see much of between the Great Depression and dotcom bubble.
One document I wish I could get my hands on is Jared Polis's undergraduate honors thesis, titled "Paradigm Shift: Politics in the Information Age" which appears to have anticipated this, based on the title. I think guys like Trump, JB Pritzker, Polis--people with massive amounts of money in their bank accounts and not a lot of time on their hands otherwise--are going to be increasingly common over the next generation, short of another Great Depression-style event.
Right; and the Nazi's weren't socialist either according to Democrats even though Hitler was quite profound to say they were.. Yes; Democrats are socialist. They support Socialist Policies 100%.
Socialism definition is - a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies.
I mean WTF; Most of them announce proudly being "Democratic Socialists"... Lefty Ignorance knows no boundaries.
Socialism definition is - a way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies.
Solar, Wind, Energy, Baffling regulations, FLPMA (50%+ of USA landmass ownership), 100s and 100s of Federal Agencies (correctly identified as Businesses)....
The only reason the left thinks Republicans are a threat is because they haven't figured out yet that the USA isn't a [WE] mob rules democracy; but is a Constitutional Union of States that ENSURES Individual Liberty and Justice.
Just listen to them talk --- "threat to our democracy"...
Dumbsh*ts --- You don't live in a Democracy mob rules and your stance is B.S. anyways because as soon as you lose it's all about Russia posting political ads.
You gotta hand it to them -- they finally learned that government will simply run the place into the ground. Better to allow the people who know what they are doing to continue doing it, as long as you're reaping the rewards.
The right way to put it is:
there is no real difference between MOST democrats and socialists

Our elites are actively cultivating idiocy, both in the Greek sense and in the modern moronic sense.
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that the elites are at it again.
I would say still, not again.
"The past month may have felt like we were still locked in an unwavering delta variant surge, what with some major cities imposing new restrictions, an array of alarming news coverage, and vaccinated people still seeming to catch a lot of breakthrough infections."
No, the past month felt like we were locked in a surge of expanding propaganda, deeper partisan posturing, and renewed panic among the gullible public. Now, for whatever reasons, our betters have decided to switch the narrative a bit.
I think whenever internal polling shows they're pushing the hoi polloi to the precipice they pull back a little. They want to keep the tension on, so society gets used to it, but not so much that we lose our shit.
It's kinda like getting a wild horse used to a bit and bridal.
Can I leave my basement now?
Depends. Which National Panic drove you down there? If it was AIDS, apparently its now OK to come out. But that little asshole Fauci is still fucking with people, so try to avoid news about this thing "COVID".
Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR.
LOfuckingL
But there's totally a difference between Democrats and Socialists.
We have Amazon Prime!
Isn't naked red-baiting beneath you?
Listen, she's just a well-meaning Progressive and should be granted the benefit of the doubt.
Lol. Good call back on jeff. He will deny he said it.
Jeffy embarrassing himself white knighting for Democrats again.
Should have seen him yesterday trying to walk back that he implied if people didn't voluntarily do something, it means Government could step in to do it.
Ironically he doesn't realize Government is an arm of the people. If people aren't doing things, it means they don't want the government to do them either. But he is so full bore in government of the elites ruling the masses, he allows government power over people where he feels people are wrong.
he implied if people didn’t voluntarily do something, it means Government could step in to do it.
Oh, now YOU are changing your story. You claimed yesterday that I outright said that. Now you are saying that I only "implied" it? That implication is only in your head. Yet one more way you are dishonest.
Ironically he doesn’t realize Government is an arm of the people.
No it isn't. Government is its own institution, separate and distinct from "the people". Have you heard of public choice theory?
If people aren’t doing things, it means they don’t want the government to do them either.
Have you heard of collective action problems?
"People don't build battleships or bombers on their own, therefore, they don't want the government to do those things either!" That's a stupid take even for you Jesse.
But he is so full bore in government of the elites ruling the masses, he allows government power over people where he feels people are wrong.
As do you. Or aren't you aware of the large numbers of people who are in favor of things like banning pornography, banning guns, government censorship of 'hate speech', government confiscation of property for dubious purposes, etc. Go ahead and try to tell us that you DON'T want to give government power over the people who want to do these things.
No you won't because you don't discuss issues substantively, you only fling insults and poo.
“People don’t build battleships or bombers on their own, therefore, they don’t want the government to do those things either!” That’s a stupid take even for you Jesse.
So Boeing doesn't do all the R&D and build those bombers on their own? Liar.
Boeing doesn't build bombers without a government contract.
A government contract doesn’t summon a bomber out of the air, you fool.
Federal government was granted power to provide for the common defense. They were not given power to take from some and give to others to solve an unsolvable crisis like homelessness, which isn't even a crisis shot weasel.
Have you even read the constitution?
Keep in mind that chemjeff is a sockpuppet of the person who formerly went by cytotoxic. When he was using his cytotoxic handle he claimed to be a Canadian. So his familiarity with US conlaw is usually tenuous at best. To be fair, he doesn't really understand Canada's legal system either.
Boeing doesn’t build bombers without a government contract.
Your ignorance is showing. Boeing designs and builds the prototype in the hope the government will order it. That is not remotely the same as what you are implying.
It is also immaterial because your whole premise is horribly flawed. People regularly build small planes and giant ships on their own. Military applications are modified designs of widely used technology.
You did jeff. You kept claiming that people had to act voluntarily. The only reason to say that is because if they don't government can step in.
Deny that? Everyone here can read your posts and understand what you are saying. They can see you trying to change your statements later when called put and shown to be authoritarian. That is how you argue. Youre a shit weasel. You know your intent jeff. Stop denying it. I will link the thread for everyone.
It's literally the exact same argument he made all last year when he was shilling for mask mandates. "Everyone should wear a mask voluntarily, because if they don't then the government will make them! Keep your freedom by doing exactly what the government tells you to do so they don't have to take your freedom by making you do what they tell you to do!" It's quite possibly the most retarded bit of sophistry he's ever deployed. Not even his handlers and talking points PDFs are dumb enough to peddle it. This is what happens when you try to go off-script and have an IQ hovering around 80.
You kept claiming that people had to act voluntarily.
IF there is going to be a society organized around principles of voluntarism, then a spirit of voluntarism is necessary among the public. By the way, this is what another commenter had to say in response to my comment:
Fostering a spirit of cooperation and volunteerism, which I agree is necessary in libertopia,
https://reason.com/2021/10/03/how-the-cdc-became-americas-landlord/#comment-9137661
Is this commenter "implying" that government force is justified if people don't volunteer? Hmm?
Why is it that this other commenter can have a civil conversation with me on this topic, yet you can't? Is it because this other person is a "leftist"? Or maybe it is because you are incapable of anything civil?
Funny how Jesse never came back to respond to this. Telling.
Apparently it's not beneath ENB either.
Yes it is red-baiting and I'm disappointed to see ENB engage in the same thing.
Somehow, pointing out that someone was trained by communists and regularly waxes euphoric over communists and has been nominated to oversee our banking system is red-baiting.
I recommend people ignore Chemjeff. He will use emotionally loaded terms like "red-baiting" to try and dismiss inconvenient arguments about the left, and then accuse you of emotions if you try to disagree with him. If Mike is a disingenuous troll, Chemjeff is the definition of projection.
What you will NOT get from either of them is a good faith conversation.
EVERYONE who grew up in the Soviet Union went to schools run by communists. Is EVERY SINGLE PERSON who went to school in the Soviet Union before 1991 a "communist"?
He will use emotionally loaded terms like “red-baiting” to try and dismiss inconvenient arguments about the left
Talking about whether Omarosa is a communist or not, is not actually addressing any of her ARGUMENTS though. It is just a smear. It does not make any substantive argument against any of the positions that she holds. And in the link that Claptrap posted about my comment, I said that I DON'T AGREE with her positions on regulating banks or regulating cryptocurrency. But, just like with the vaccine mandate issue, that isn't enough for you.
You demand 100% compliance not just with your ideology, but with your emotional state of mind. It is not enough to oppose vaccine mandates; I must also be just as emotionally outraged about them as you are. It is not enough to oppose Omarosa's positions; I must also be willing to endorse cheap red-baiting rhetorical tricks against her. It is not enough to oppose Biden's agenda; I must also be willing to accuse him of being senile. It is not enough to oppose what Democrats are doing; I must also be willing to accuse them of America-hating treason. And I am just not going to go there.
EVERYONE who grew up in the Soviet Union went to schools run by communists. Is EVERY SINGLE PERSON who went to school in the Soviet Union before 1991 a “communist”?
Fair point, if you ignore the second clause in his sentence.
You claim not to agree with this or that, but in every case you display more fire arguing with your own ostensible allies than disputing the policy in question. Plus, you are literally doing what Overt called you out for in his second paragraph, right here in this very comment.
but in every case you display more fire arguing with your own ostensible allies than disputing the policy in question.
Which ostensible allies? Team Red? They are not my allies. Neither is Team Blue.
"Is EVERY SINGLE PERSON who went to school in the Soviet Union before 1991 a 'communist'?"
I personally know at least one rabid anti-communist, who is an anti-communist precisely because he was subjected to Soviet schooling.
Ayn Rand went to a school run by communists.
Nobody is calling her a communist. Just like nobody is demanding you do anything. They are calling you out for refusing to call socialist, communists and Marxists what they are, even when they openly admit to it.
The commie bitch needs to be curb-stomped.
See, there we go.
It isn't enough to just oppose her nomination or oppose her ideas. I have to engage in performative displays of emotive outrage, coupled with personal derogatory insults. Only then would I not be a "leftie".
"You demand 100% compliance not just with your ideology,"
I'm not demanding shit, sweetheart. I am just pointing out that if people want an honest conversation, they will have to find it in discourse with someone who is not more concerned with style over substance; someone willing to discuss the facts, rather than ascribe motivations to others.
People will find zero value conversing with you, because the second logic dictates you change your stance, you will bail out with one of those appeals to emotion. ("You are red-baiting". "Well my side means well." "Well this just isn't that important to me".)
Then, rather than just cop to your tribalism, you'll accuse people of being illogical and emotional, in some of the most epic projection I've ever seen.
YOU are the one who is demanding performative displays of emotion, rather than facts and logic.
When it comes to the vaccine mandates, literally the only difference between our two positions is that I am not as pants-on-fire outraged over it as you are. That's it. On every other measure, we agree. I oppose the government mandate generally. I oppose it in schools. I oppose it for kids in schools. But because I don't DENOUNCE AND CONDEMN it as NATION-DESTROYING TYRANNY, that is enough for you to call me a 'leftie'. You know, the ones who actually DO support the government vaccine mandates.
When it comes to Omarosa, the only difference between our two positions is that I am not actually sure if she is a literal communist. When it comes to her IDEAS, we both oppose them. When it comes to her APPOINTMENT, we both oppose it. The literal only difference is that I am unwilling at this point to use that label on her. That's it.
YOU are the one who is chasing away erstwhile allies because they do not agree with you EMOTIONALLY. That is YOU.
"When it comes to the vaccine mandates, literally the only difference between our two positions is that I am not as pants-on-fire outraged over it as you are."
No, the difference is that you will spend days arguing that you don't shouldn't have to criticize something that is very criticism-worthy. And it is transparently obvious to everyone who reads this site that it is because criticizing (not declining to support) the government forcing kids to stick needles in their arm is a bit too far for you if it means agreeing with trumpers.
"When it comes to Omarosa, the only difference between our two positions is that I am not actually sure if she is a literal communist."
No the difference is that you led off with "Y'all's Red-baiting" instead of, "It she really a communist, because here are the facts as I see them."
"YOU are the one who is chasing away erstwhile allies because they do not agree with you EMOTIONALLY."
Not only projection, but lying as well. You have no interest in being my ally. I am not looking for allies, in any case. I am looking for people interested in having good faith arguments. And you aren't one of those people.
And it is transparently obvious to everyone who reads this site that it is because criticizing (not declining to support) the government forcing kids to stick needles in their arm is a bit too far for you if it means agreeing with trumpers.
No. I don't criticize the government mandate AS STRONGLY as you would like, because I don't think it is borne of bad intentions. I think the people who advocate for a government vaccine mandate, in the main, want people not to get sick and want to save lives. I don't think it is EEEVIL per se. I know you disagree. We will just have to disagree on that.
No the difference is that you led off with “Y’all’s Red-baiting” instead of, “It she really a communist, because here are the facts as I see them.”
Congratulations, you have discovered that I am not fair to Team Red. Mea culpa. No I'm not fair. I don't give them the benefit of the doubt very often. I am harsher towards Team Red than I am towards Team Blue. I never claimed to be 'fair and balanced'. SO WHAT? There are tons of people here who are SIMILARLY unfair towards Team Blue and I don't see you busting their balls over it.
I am looking for people interested in having good faith arguments.
You don't want a 'good faith argument', at least on this topic. I have offered plenty of good faith arguments to you, AND YOU KNOW IT. You want someone who will validate your emotional outrage towards a policy which you are taking personally because it directly impacts your child. I get it, I would be absolutely outraged if I were in your position. But I am not, I am able to look at it from a more dispassionate view than you can at this point. I'm not a Vulcan, I have my own biases, that is for sure. But I'm not so emotionally compromised by the direct impact of how a policy might affect my child as you are.
"No. I don’t criticize the government mandate AS STRONGLY as you would like, because I don’t think it is borne of bad intentions."
Yup, this is exactly your problem. You are emoting. You are reading the intentions of everyone. Folks in your tribe obviously have good intentions. But me, well I have to have bad intentions because something something emotions my kids etc.
You are not worth debating with because your arguments are always excuses for results- if it is not a libertarian result "my team meant well". If it is a good libertarian result, "you are too emotional because of your kids". It's like you have never heard the phrase, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
"I don’t give them the benefit of the doubt very often"
Which is why your arguments are so TIRESOME, Jeff. They aren't good. You judge your tribe by their intentions, and everyone else by their actions plus whatever intentions you might ascribe to them.
"SO WHAT? There are tons of people here who are SIMILARLY unfair towards Team Blue and I don’t see you busting their balls over it."
I told you: I mistakenly thought you were different. But instead you are copping to the same tribalism that you bitch about Jesse, et al.
"You don’t want a ‘good faith argument’, at least on this topic. I have offered plenty of good faith arguments to you, AND YOU KNOW IT"
I keep going back and forth between two possibilities. The first is that you know this is a lie. The second is that you are just so young that you wouldn't know a good faith argument if it bit you. But it doesn't really matter- I tried showing you how to argue in good faith, and you aren't interested, so it doesn't really matter.
"But I’m not so emotionally compromised by the direct impact of how a policy might affect my child as you are."
Hint: saying that you don't need to criticize a bad policy has nothing to do with my emotional state. You are the one making the choice to say that a policy (one that you admit is not libertarian) isn't worth criticizing. That's on you. You can insist I am emotional for pointing it out as much as you want, but I doubt you are even fooling yourself when you look deep down.
And just for one last chance to throw you a bone, let's reexamine your statement:
“But I’m not so emotionally compromised by the direct impact of how a policy might affect my child as you are.”
You admitted several times that the policy impacting my kids is THE WRONG policy. But because your tribe means well, I suppose, you aren't going to really criticize it. Who is *really* the one "compromised" by emotion? Is it me, who is emotional but criticizing a policy we both see as wrong, or the person who is letting his logical conclusion of good/bad policy be overridden by the intentions of people he identifies with?
Most of the people arguing for drug abolition are doing it with good intentions. Do you give a pass to the left because they increasingly persecute smokers of nicotine while criticizing people looking to ban marijuana because they are on the left?
It is an incoherent way to live a moral life, but hey man you do you.
You are reading the intentions of everyone. Folks in your tribe obviously have good intentions.
For the last time: Team Blue can't possibly be "my tribe" if I don't actually subscribe to their tribal beliefs. You yourself admitted that you couldn't find any evidence of my support for 'left-wing stuff'.
And yes I am making a moral judgment on what I believe is the intentions of those who are in favor of government vaccine mandates. As do a lot of people do every single day around here. When Ken Shultz says "Progressives are America's worst people" or whatever, what do you think that is? "Emoting"? My judgment arises in part because I have actually talked with some of the people who are in favor of these mandates. I don't believe they are motivated by malice or spite or "wanting to stick it to Trump voters". I think they are genuinely fearful of the consequences of having a world where this disease continues to run amok forever, and they believe government coercion is the only possible solution. I think their fears are exaggerated and their methods are unwise, but I do not believe that they have a desire to harm people.
But me, well I have to have bad intentions because something something emotions my kids etc.
I NEVER said you have bad intentions with regards to the vaccine mandate. That is completely unfair. I continue to believe that you are emotionally compromised on this issue to an extent because this particular issue hits close to home. I don't think this represents a BAD INTENTION. I don't think you are a bad person for opposing this mandate vigorously because you believe you are defending your child. That is admirable actually. I think you only have the best of intentions towards your child.
Actually, in the main, I don't think either side has "bad intentions" with regards to the government vaccine mandate.
And what exactly are you looking for in a "good faith argument"? I state a position, I don't lie about my position, I make reasonable (i.e., not full of logical fallacies) arguments in favor of a position, I make reasonable (i.e., not full of logical fallacies) criticisms in favor of positions that I oppose. That is what I consider a "good faith argument".
Are you looking for someone who is scrupulously 'fair and balanced' to all sides? No that isn't me, and frankly I don't think that is a fair definition of 'good faith'. And if THAT is what you are looking for when it comes to 'good faith argument', then good luck trying to have a 'good faith argument' with anyone around here. You are going to wind up only talking to yourself.
You are the one making the choice to say that a policy (one that you admit is not libertarian) isn’t worth criticizing.
And that is not true. I have criticized it. It violates the NAP. I don't support it. ONCE AGAIN, the only difference is that I don't criticize it AS STRONGLY as you. That's it. That's the only difference.
the person who is letting his logical conclusion of good/bad policy be overridden by the intentions of people he identifies with?
The logical conclusion of "good/bad policy" isn't overridden by my perception of the intentions of the pro-mandate crowd. Even while I acknowledge that I think they have good intentions, I still say their policy is wrong. Where in this entire discussion have I said anything like, "Well the pro-mandate people have good intentions, so now I'm in favor of mandates"? Never.
Most of the people arguing for drug abolition are doing it with good intentions. Do you give a pass to the left because they increasingly persecute smokers of nicotine while criticizing people looking to ban marijuana because they are on the left?
I think, on the main, the people wanting to ban nicotine don't have bad intentions, they genuinely want to stop people from getting lung cancer. And, partly, selfish intentions, as in not wanting to be subject to icky stinky smokers. But I don't think, again in the main, that they have EVIL intentions. NEVERTHELESS, I don't think nicotine should be banned, DESPITE their good intentions.
It is typically NOT people on the left who want to keep the ban on marijuana, so I am not sure where that came from.
Again there is a difference between one's intellectual viewpoint, and one's emotional state of mind regarding that viewpoint. They don't have to necessarily be in sync. To be intellectually opposed to something does not necessarily have to correlate with being OUTRAGEOUSLY OUTRAGED by the thing.
Lol. Ok, Non-Absolute Boomer.
The problem was not that McCarthy was wrong. It was that he went too far. This has been lost in the lefty revisionist history.
Lol. God damn youre a fucking joke of a little boy.
I'm beneath it.
Immediately preceded by "in part because they have mistaken beliefs about their opponents."
Reason staff should be proud that they did their part getting rid of Trump and his gang of Russian collusionists.
Sure, because Reason has such deep influence over the American public. Hey, but nice signaling to your fellow right wingers.
Oh, so they don't have deep influence, so it's fine they violate their core principles of libertarianism. got it.
Could by how Dee can caw herself a libertarian while pushing progressive narratives. She influences nobody so it is ok.
This has been a pretty interesting last couple weeks as the leftists find themselves trying to defend their Libertarian bonafides while bending over backwards in an attempt to not agree with the right.
JFree and Mike are arguing that principles don't need to be endorsed or condemned on this site because it doesn't matter anyway. Jeff is arguing that one shouldn't endorse or condemn an action on principle if it isn't your ox being gored.
The hilarious thing is that won't stop them one bit from condemning some conservative about some issue that affects them not one bit on this site (where opinions don't matter). It is all a big smoke screen to avoid agreeing with icky people.
Overt, if you're going to continue to call me a "leftist" then please point out the left-wing positions that I actively support. Do I support high tax rates? Do I support large spending? Do I support government vaccine mandates? Do I support socialized health care? Do I support banning guns? Do I support tariffs? Do I support the Green New Deal? Surely if I am such a "leftist" you can point out those places where I have endorsed leftist policies. Can you?
You've supported:
Crt
Post modernism
Teachers having a day over parents
Increased taxes
Increased regulations
Democrats colluding with corporations
fisa used against Carter page
Shooting of ashli babbitt
Against the arrests of Portland rioters due to unmarked vans
Steele dossier lies
...
Need more?
I don't really know what you support when it comes to leftist stuff, because the most you will do is say "Well from an intellectual perspective, that may be bad, but I don't really care to criticize it..."
One day you will realize how transparently hypocritical it is for you to constantly criticize one side, not criticize the other, and then claim to be libertarian. Maybe after that we will have a worthy debate. Until then, I'll pass.
I don’t really know what you support when it comes to leftist stuff,
I will take that as your admission that no, you cannot find anywhere where I have posted my support for 'leftist stuff'.
So you call me a 'leftie' ONLY BECAUSE I don't denounce the topics that are of concern TO YOU as fervently as YOU denounce them.
I will take that as your admission that no, you cannot find anywhere where I have posted my support for ‘leftist stuff’.
You mean crying like a bitch about Oberlin getting bitch-slapped, or you whinging that keeping child molesters from immigrating here is curbing their liberty?
Maybe you can mewl some more about the government providing you with free Voter ID at your door so you don't have to waddle your fat ass in to the DMV to get one.
The fact that you “find conservatives way more mockworthy” is a tell. The left is batshit insane.
Close enough for government work, lefty.
Jeff is arguing that one shouldn’t endorse or condemn an action on principle if it isn’t your ox being gored.
That is not what I wrote.
My position is that one's intellectual position on an issue, and one's emotional level of feeling about an issue, are two different things. Two people can have the same exact intellectual position on an issue, but feel very differently emotionally about the issue. That level of emotional fervor (or lack thereof) shouldn't be held against either party as far as deciding who should be counted as supporting or opposing an issue. You on the other hand seem to demand that both are just as important, and only people that agree with you both intellectually and emotionally ought to be counted as allies.
As a life-long libertarian, I've worked over the years at acceptance that the government I live under will never work as I would like it to. I've worked at concentrating on and getting fulfillment from my own personal life, family, neighborhood. I've worked at having the emotional maturity to not get bent out of shape at things I cannot control.
You've never advocated a libertarian position in your life outside of legal weed and ass sex. Who do you think that you're fooling here?
Do you think that your entire posting history can just vanish if you decide to post otherwise?
You are a lying sack of shit, Laursen = As a life-long libertarian...
For the benefit of the thread, arguing with Mike is arguing with someone who will never take responsibility for what he says. In fact, you might as well mute him now and save yourself the frustration. He is a completely disingenuous adversary and you would do better arguing with the main character from Memento.
https://reason.com/2021/09/09/california-is-set-to-outlaw-unannounced-condom-removal/#comment-9091773
That is Mike insisting that he “would never look to Rolling Stone” for news, after spreading their bogus ivermectin story only days earlier. Consider that: He didn’t apologize. He didn’t even try to ignore his mistake. He brazenly tried to dunk on Rolling Stone to make himself look like an arbiter of truth.
The pathological narcissism required to disrespect the truth and readers so heavily should make him ashamed. It won't though, so I advise others in the thread to avoid engaging with someone that argues in such bad faith.
And that's why you spend 8-12 hours per day, 7 days per week, posting hackneyed left-wing talking points lifted straight from ActBlue talking points memos on Reason.com. Because you are so mature and fulfilled in your personal life. It's a wonder how you find the time, what with the wildly successful corporation you pretend to run, not to mention your years of honorable service in the special operations Ranger SEAL 101st Regiment.
" Two people can have the same exact intellectual position on an issue, but feel very differently emotionally about the issue."
Perhaps one day you will realize that emotion has nothing to do with this. If the logical consequence of your principles demand that you criticize something, then criticize it. I have done this numerous times with the right- criticizing their spending, tariffs and immigration stances. It isn't hard to do.
Instead, you (and others) have now spent countless posts over HOURS defending some bizarre formulation about why you shouldn't actually need to criticize mandates (among other things) because even though you don't support them....uh...emotion or whatever.
*shrug* if you don't understand why this is a great big "ARGUING WITH ME IS A WASTE OF TIME" sign, then I'll leave you to it.
For the record, I did think you were one of the worthy adversaries at first, which is why I was calling you out directly. So I do appreciate you disabusing me of that notion so that we do not waste each others' time.
Instead, you (and others) have now spent countless posts over HOURS defending some bizarre formulation about why you shouldn’t actually need to criticize mandates
My position on government vaccine mandates:
I oppose government vaccine mandates because they represent a violation of the NAP.
Is this not a criticism? What more do you want?
Maybe stop whining for once when people here criticize it to begin with, fat boy.
Sure, because Reason has such deep influence over the American public.
Yes, because if they wanted to influence the American public, they would have associated with a think tank, started a foundation and maybe started publishing a well known magazine... Hey, wait a sec...
Also, KMW on Maher the other day, Robby on Fox and Gillespie on every show who will have him are just there to look pretty and definitely not to try and influence people, right.
But hey, sarcasm aside, nice signaling to your fellow idiots.
"Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR."
LOL
Sure, an otherwise obscure Biden Administration official said something positive about the Soviet Union. Also, AOC wore a dress that said "Tax the Rich." This is harmless posturing.
As a Koch / Reason libertarian, I don't care about posturing. I care about measurable results. And what actually happens when Democrats control Washington DC? Wealth rapidly concentrates at the very top.
#OBLsFirstLaw
#BillionairesForBiden
Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there.
Gold.
But people's salaries were set (by the state) in a gender-blind manner. And all women got very generous maternity benefits.
Stop it, Saule, you're killing me!
But social distancing is not as important as public discussion of the virus often imagines. "We've ascribed far too much human authority over the virus," as Michael Osterholm, an infectious-disease expert at the University of Minnesota, has told me.
You don't say. Scientists (and their jock-sniffers) are often the last to know/admit the obvious. Seems that years of intense, rigorous training might involve certain trade-offs.
Osterholm has actually been an exception; first heard him on Joe Rogan early 2020, and he's been a lot more accurate than anyone else I've heard. Also thinks most masks [cloth, paper surgical; the exception being N 95, properly worn] are worthless posturing
The linked article makes him sound like every other expert . . . spreading fear with the Delta variant. He says things like, “No one wants our kids to have to do distance learning … but the kids’ safety has to be first.” Sounds like all the other authoritarians who use kids as a tool for their authority.
Our local schools have been open, less distancing and masking than last year, and are not spreading the delta variant.

The "six-foot-rule" is a long-time assumption based on supposed scientific studies over 100 years ago. Cities implemented them during the Spanish Flu epidemic.
I wish I had a link for you, but alas...
A year or two ago I heard on the radio and read about a study of experts and amateurs. This study found that diverse groups of intelligent, open minded amateurs were capable of predicting broad trends far better than experts. The reason being that the more credentialed an academic becomes, the narrower their focus and expertise.
There were caveats. Like that the group had to be genuinely open minded, intellectually diverse, and non-judgemental. Accept any idea, don't belittle someone for being wrong, and be open to a different interpretation of your idea and data.
That's obviously not here, this place is 2/3 trolls, sock puppets, 50 centers, and propaganda bots. Most social media is even worse.
But I bring it up because I'm reminded of it whenever I see the dogmatic pronouncements from leaders like "We have to laser focus on getting those numbers down" or everyone has to wear masks because "the sooner we do this the sooner we can go back to normal."
For fuck's sake, man, Delta is going to do what it is going to do. I've said 2 month surge since July, based on someone like Osterholm. All these public health mandates that are just virtue signalling make me thing government is 1000 ants on a log, floating down a river, and every one of them thinks they're steering.
Based upon the most expansive leak of tax haven files in history, the investigation reveals the secret deals and hidden assets of more than 330 politicians and high-level public officials in more than 90 countries and territories, including 35 country leaders...
To be fair, they put all that work into designing the system for their own benefit.
Former President Donald Trump is still fighting in court to get his Twitter account back.
He's running.
Why doesn’t he just open one with a fake name like everyone else?
Because the outrage isn't genuine if the name isn't?
Right, like Pierre Delecto.
Because @Hilter was taken?
What about @literallyHitler?
@GrabHerByTheVaxgina
And this time around Trump will be a Presidential candidate of the same age that Biden was in the 2020 race. I assume all commenters here who criticized Biden for being too old will be consistent and hold Trump to the same standard.
Ok, then what?
As long as you're consistent and say that age doesn't matter.
That would be inconsistent if I did that: my consistent position all through last year’s race was that Biden’s critics were correct that he was too old, but that Trump, who was only a few years younger than Biden, was also too old.
And I equally assume that you will be consistent and spend 8-12 hours every day, 7 days per week, defending Trump from any accusation that he is unfit for office due to his age.
too old
You mean showing visible signs of dementia? Because that was the claim against Biden, not that he was too old but that he was seemingly demented (more so than in previous years).
Nope. He was criticized for mental decline, but he was also, separately, often criticized solely for his age.
I often pointed out that Trump also exhibits signs of limited mental capacity, although it might just be inherent stupidity, not age-related: hydrosonic missiles, revolutionary war airports, rambling, incoherent speeches, I can go on and on with examples.
but he was also, separately, often criticized solely for his age.
No, he wasn't. This is a lie.
It isn’t a lie if Dee’s feelingz want it to be so.
Of course it's a lie, that's why Mike is here.

That name say's "edrebber".
Who the fuck is edrebber?
One of Mike's sockpuppets, most likely.

That name say's "jubalharshaw".
Who the fuck is jubalharshaw? And why does he sound like you when you were boosting for Bernie?
Having a nice chat with Moderation4Ever I see.
Jubal Harshaw was a Sci-Fi character created by Robert A. Heinlein, libertariqn Sci-Fi writer:

That name say’s “Flaco”.
Who the fuck is Flaco? And he just states Biden's age. He doesn't say anything negative about it.
In fact none of them really say what you claim. Admit it. You were hoping nobody would bother to click on these links. You were trying to pull a fast one.
Better than jeff pulling a fat one.
Joe Flacco is not an elite quarterback.
So after sifting through two years worth of comments, you managed to find three examples. One of which has a comment right above the one you linked making it clear his objection is to Biden's demented behavior rather than the number of years since his birth.
My claim was: "He was criticized for mental decline, but he was also, separately, often criticized solely for his age." You said I was lying, but I provided examples of what I was referring to.
But none of that matched your claim. You were lying after all.
I will be happy to bitch about Trump. I have consistently bitched about every president. They are all cunts.
Good. Others here are not happy to bitch about Trump.
Laursen gets furious when you say "Fuck Biden", Eeyore. Give it a whirl.
I sat it to myself hourly. It's important to meditate on what's important.
A positive drug test can't be used as the basis for a drug possession charge, rules the Ohio Supreme Court.
Okay, who told the Ohio Supreme Court about the Bill of Rights?
But a positive Covid test can get you locked in your house.
Ahem. THE Ohio State Supreme Court.
Well played, sir.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister warns his nation is preparing for war with China and urges Australia to increase intelligence sharing and security cooperation as Beijing intensifies a campaign of military intimidation.
Looks like we pulled our troops out of Afghanistan just in time!
SleepyJoe playing 4d chess!
More like the square root of -4d chess.
More like checkers or Mahjong.
It's funny, but at this point the US probably ought to cut Taiwan off. I don't like it at all- I don't think there is anything wrong with supporting allies. But we clearly do not have the military necessary to defend these allies, and the sooner they start figuring out how to defend themselves, the better.
While there is no real proof, the recent performance of our government and military has led me to suspect that our blue water navy is woefully unprepared to execute any defense of Taiwan. China is building its military for one thing and one thing only, right now: and that is to take Taiwan. Meanwhile our military has spent 20 years chasing cavemen around in the desert and learning to critically depend on technology solutions that assume your enemy lacks the most basic form of sophistication.
It would be much better that the US avoid any confrontation with a developed adversary, than actually get in a shooting war and find out how paper the tiger really is. I say that not for our sake- no one is invading the US- but for our allies. If you are Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, you rely on the US Military at your peril.
(And BTW: When I say "Cut Taiwan Off" I mean unambiguously tell them we will not intervene during a Chinese attack. I think we should sell them as much military equipment as they can buy, and let them defend themselves.)
No no, haven’t you heard? Selling arms to allies is way worse than actively participating in conflicts and could start WW3!
That was Jeff and Mike's argument when Trump sold stuff to the Arabs last year, "He's declared war on Iran!!!".
We have a strange agreement with Taiwan. I believe it happened under the Carter administration. I don’t believe we recognize them as a country but have a specific mutual aid agreement that does not explicitly commit us to military force in their defense.
Do treaties mean anything to you, Overt?
Do we have a treaty with Taiwan? Not to my knowledge. I am not trying to be snarky here- genuinely, is there some sort of treaty requiring us to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion?
And if we do, then I think the best case at this point is withdrawing from that treaty. Again, this isn't out of some isolationist ideal or anything. I don't mind our country working with allies in a defensive posture. I am taking this position because I suspect our navy has a glass jaw and it would be best if 1) we not be around to prove this to the world when the chinese throw a punch and 2) Taiwan doesn't count on us to give them support.
The cost to the US to demonstrate itself as ineffective to the world is much higher than if it is merely suspected.
When it comes to Taiwan, as you infer, the real issue is whether Japan and South Korea would be willing to defend them as part of a coalition with the US, IF such a situation as a Chinese invasion of island took place.
I highly suspect that China knows how de-nutted the US military is right now, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future, and they're just waiting for their moment. And when it happens, I guarantee the neocon/neolib unholy alliance will reel in shock that outsourcing our industrial pollution via production outsourcing, and cultural pollution via Hollywood films, didn't do a damn thing to "democratize" an ethnostate that has operated under a "Mandate of Heaven" philosophy for centuries.
China does not have the amphibious fleet to invade Taiwan. They could conscript their commercial fleet and maybe make it happen.
One analyst indicated that China believed it would be a ten year effort to take Taiwan by force. And Xi’s timetable was to have it done by 2050.
I'm pulling this out of my ass, but I think Taiwan would capitulate after the first few hours, just to save lives and infrastructure.
Put it back in.
"China does not have the amphibious fleet to invade Taiwan. "
This is "common wisdom" that no longer holds true. China commissioned the first in its new line of amphibious assault ships last April, and they are aggressively building this capability.
Further, Taiwan is 80 miles off of China's shores. All they need is an air strip, and they can get thousands of troops and light armor airlifted in before the US can react.
I think it would be smarter for the US to say we will not support Taiwan, than let the Chinese think they need to defeat our carrier fleet as well as the Taiwan air defenses.
I honestly think the main thing holding them back is the massive interdiction defense systems that Taiwan bought from the US when Trump was in office. The Chinese don't give a shit about how many of their people die, but they DO give a shit about their military equipment, and if they think the material cost of taking the island is too great, they'll hold off until they believe they have enough to eat the losses.
They're also getting in to it with Australia right now, and while I doubt the Aussies care all that much about Taiwan, I wonder if China kicking off any kind of military action would give them the excuse to break the shit of their adversary.
Taiwan has a military. The analyst indicated the Chinese would not likely have the amphibious fleet necessary (sans conscripting “private” vessels) for a few more years.
China has been preparing for destroying carriers with their hypersonic missiles. Hope a real world test doesn’t occur.
Give them a dozen nukes.
I think its apples and oranges. Defending Taiwan presumably wouldn't engage us in a nation building mission in a hostile country. We'd be there to stop the invasion and then help them rebuild themselves back up.
But I agree the local nations need to be prepared. If Taiwan fell quickly, like Crimea, we'd just issue ineffective pronouncements of why China's bad.
It isn't about nation building, it is that we haven't fought a modern military force since '91 and every indication we get- from avowed communists being commissioned as officers from West Point, to the complete incompetence of our military in training the Afghans, to the many reports about our under-invested nuclear arsenal, to the deep investigations after those two naval ships collided...There is just so much circumstantial evidence suggesting that our military is not motivated or ready for prime time.
Possibly, but I still have much hope and respect for our capabilities. I think of all the screw ups from the past from the invasion of Canada in 1812 to dropping a nuke on North Carolina (not exploded/imploded, also have "heard" confirmed reports elsewhere of same thing happening), and I think we still have a capable fighting force.
And the point about Afghans army being trained does go to nation building - that's where I agree that people who want defending must take an active role or else not much we can do.
When it happens, it will be mostly economic. The Chinese Communists don't want a real war with bombs and missiles and all that, because it would destroy the economic infrastructure they covet.
What military action there might be will be mostly air and sea. The occupation will come after a "negotiated" settlement.
I'm not so sure that's true.
I think that the Chinese will do whatever it takes to remove the seventy-year insult to national pride, and the world will never know, because no footage will be allowed out, ever.
I also think the Taiwanese know this and will capitulate the moment things get actually hot.
'These decreases are part of a pattern that Leonhardt calls "Covid's mysterious two-month cycle"'
Maybe if we can get COVID on the pill we can even out her mood swings.
"That's not funny!"
It's not. It's hilarious.
Hysterical!
A "simple way to expand access to health care"?
Don't summarily fire medical professionals?
But other businesses are now on notice that antitrust will be wielded as a regulatory weapon no matter the evidence.
Fascist Republicans.
"Trump supporters falsely believe there is no real difference between Democrats and socialists"
may be because of things like this:
"Biden's nominee for comptroller of the currency, "graduated from Moscow State University in 1989 on the Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship. Thirty years later, she still believes the Soviet economic system was superior,"
"There's no proof she's a member of the Democratic Party."
Will need to see notarized membership card.
She's a minority. It's physically impossible for those folks to get cards.
Except the vaccine card that must be on their person at all times.
Or the fact that the new chief of the Bureau of Land Management was an eco-terrorist.
I think we should dissolve the BLM and the states should take over the management.
The problem is that a lot of these lands cross state lines, so you'd have to try and put together interstate compacts to manage them, as they're seen as whole ecosystems, not the state version of our front yards. I'm not sure how that gets done these days; I suspect that if the same political environment was around when the Colorado River Compact was being put together, the Upper Basin and Arizona would end up telling California to eat shit. Hell, there's no guarantee that even two blue-voting states like New Mexico and Colorado could figure something out over the Rio Grande or Sangre de Cristo range.
I think they can work it out. They could potentially create joint groups to work on issues that span states. It doesn't need to be federal for 2 states to work together.
Maybe she thought it was the other BLM she would head.
She was most surprised when she got hired because she had bombed the interview.
No, no, no. That is Communism, not true socialism. I'm sure that works much better in their internal polling.
"French's column is pegged to a recent poll showing high percentages of Trump voters and Biden voters are itching for civil war"
How about we invite them to a massive Civil War reenactment, but give them live ammo?
My money will be on the Trumpistas. They will actually enjoy ridding the country of those assholes.
The first line of defense is a drum circle. The second is spirit fingers.
The most effective is trigger fingers.
Yes, this. Let the extremists on the left and right fight it out between themselves, and leave the rest of us out of it.
And by "leave us out of it" of course, you mean politically neutral mature adults like you histrionically screeching about cops being beaten to death with fire extinguishers for 4 months, agitating for the mass-murder of unarmed right-wing "insurrectionists", and defending left wing domestic terrorists who kill 3 dozen people, savagely beat hundreds of others, attempt to burn a building full of people alive, and cause 3 billion dollars worth of property damage.
Don't forget crying out at Police officers arresting those who were throwing firebombs in portland using unmarked vans.
I remember that.
They clearly showed they are pro-insurrection.

It is now crystal clear Trump is monster. If you still support him, you are a bad person. There is no ambiguity, no wiggle room anymore.
Laursen totally not being an extremist.
Let the extremists on the left... fight it out (with the right)"
Because despite sounding like an ActBlue talking-points pdf, Laursen mysteriously doesn't think it's an extremist.
Got to be a parody account
'"Until I came to the US, I couldn't imagine that things like gender pay gap still existed in today's world. Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there. Market doesn't always 'know best,'" she tweeted in 2019.'
Stupid cunt. Now go back out and stand in line for your ration of government cheese.
People achieving things at different heights is shocking to her.
Adjusted for education, training, and experience, the pay gap is within the margin of error.
Only by comparing an operation room nurse to the neurosurgeon doing the operation can you generate a difference.
Why do you hate nurses, you misogynist?
Yeah, they work just as many hours, the pay should be the same.
#mathismisogyny
Only by comparing an operation room nurse to the neurosurgeon doing the operation can you generate a difference.
Which leads me to believe that her assertion is not an apples-to-apples one - i.e. she says "no gender pay gap" because government set all the wages for each job classification, but that's not how the "pay gap" is calculated - it's the sum total of "what women earn" vs. the sum total of "what men earn."
I'll bet in the USSR those numbers were also not the same, but I'd wager that in fact they weren't even tracked.
You don't get cheese. Only members of the preferred political party get the cheese. You will be happy with stale bread.
And a monthly potato.
Maybe a rat, if you can catch it.
That article about the Pandora Papers is really, really odd. I went into it, and saw a bunch of circumstantial stuff. Did you know that a Belgian Executive working for a company accused of environmental harm used this system? Who are the accusers? Dunno. What are the crimes? *shrug*.
How about this one: "One notably disheartening line of inquiry involves secret investors in one of the biggest corporate landlords in the U.S. These investors are profiting from evictions carried out in the midst of a global pandemic. And they include trusts holding millions devoted to the Legion of Christ, a Roman Catholic religious order disgraced by an international sex-abuse scandal."
What does that word salad even mean? Who profits off of evictions? Certainly not landlords. It takes years to recover the costs of an eviction if ever.
That article, honestly, reads worse than a Zero Hedge article drawn from some gold bug. There may be something there, but it is more PR than actual facts, and there is no real linking to those facts- just statistics about how many images and pdf documents they have found.
Did they mention Trump? Because you would hear a lot more about it if Trump was in it.
No but I did learn today the King of Jordan doesn't need to pay taxes. It's good to be the King
How about this one: “One notably disheartening line of inquiry involves secret investors in one of the biggest corporate landlords in the U.S. These investors are profiting from evictions carried out in the midst of a global pandemic.
Well color me stupid. I could have sworn there was a moratorium on evictions in the US. Does Biden know about these evictions?
Fake news.
There's nothing particularly scandalous there, other than confirming what we already know--that the elites take care of one another, and have a bunch of offshore tax havens to protect their wealth.
That wasn't anywhere near as awesome or juicy as the DNC/Podesta email dumps or what Snowden did.
[The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency] ensures that the federal banking system operates in a safe and sound manner, provides fair access to financial services, treats customers fairly, and complies with applicable laws and regulations.
Get ready for *real* "fair access" if Saule Omarova gets in.
'A "simple way to expand access to health care"? Fix the medical residency system.'
A simpler way: grant unlimited MD degrees and licenses to anyone who asks. Or to select target groups who do not ask, like immigrants, high school drop-outs, people in prison, etc.
On the extreme way out there side, how about getting the federal government out of all medical activity?
They will never agree to something so reasonable.
Great rid of licensure altogether.
The way hospitalization data are trending may see at odds with constant (and ongoing) news reports that medical facilities in various areas are overcrowded
Because the media lies to push narratives.
Most trauma-center and tertiary-care-center ICUs routinely functioned at 80–90 percent of capacity even before the pandemic. And ICU beds are not a static resource.
In a study of 13 academic medical centers across the country during the first wave of the pandemic (March–June 2020), only five reported an ICU census on at least one day that exceeded their overall pre-pandemic ICU capacity. Only two exceeded pre-pandemic capacity for more than 17 days.
Currently, three-quarters of hospital inpatient beds are filled. COVID-19 patients account for only 11 percent of the available beds. Seventy-eight percent of ICU beds are filled. COVID-19 patients represent 26 percent of the capacity.

The two-month cycle can be seen in countries around the world and in states around the U.S. For instance, the delta variant started surging in many Southern states in June, then began retreating in August. In July, the delta variant started tearing through more states outside the South…then gradually began getting better in September.
Also known as seasonality...
Shock of all shocks I saw a headline yesterday about how despite high Vax rates new england is seeing a spike in cases of the nih funded Wuhan lab virus
I am really curious to see what those "High Vaccination Rate states vs Low Vaccination State Rates" look like in the winter. Something tells me the discrepancies will be much smaller.
They literally took credit for spring when they rolled out the jabs.
'Photographer Chris Arnade has a new newsletter. "What I hope to do is use it to get back to doing what I used to do, which is wander around (this time all over the world, not just the US) talking to people. Then turning that it into a mix of interviews, photographs, punditing, and whatever else," he writes.'
So, professional slacker?
A bum.
No, Chris. You've decided to be a bum. Just like those pieces of shit out there who beg for change, sleep in garbage bins and eat what I throw away. They got a name for that, Chris: it's called "a bum". And without a job, a residence or legal tender, that's exactly what you're going to be: a fucking bum.
+ 1 gimp
A majority of Biden voters falsely see no real difference between Republicans and fascists.
One surmises a majority of Biden voters have no idea what a fascist is.
One surmises the majority of Trump voters have no idea what a socialist is.
Only because we haven’t tried “real” socialism yet?
Do socialists not agree with the socialist policies of socialist governments, advocate for such socialist policies in the US, and outright call themselves socialists? Because if not then I've got socialists all wrong.
AOC and Bernie Sanders right? They're socialists? Two prominent members of the Democratic caucus. The ones who won't let anything pass unless their goodie bag of handouts and redistribution is passed?
Or do they not know what socialists are either?
Maybe Brandy doesn’t know what socialism is? Or maybe she’s just defending Democrats.
That sounds about right. When two of the highest profile members of a political party are both self-proclaimed socialists and their wing of the party is writing the proposals under consideration that is a party of socialists.
Some one should do a "You might be a socialist if...." set of observations. Where's Chumby, he's good at stuff like that.
Ask all the Cuban americans who voted for him.
Let's see how Trumpists do on a fascist scorecard:
Cultish glorification of a meglomaniac leader - check
Nationalist fervor (flag waving flaggots) - check
Worship of militaristic ideals - check
scapegoating minorities - check
hatred of intellectuals - check
hatred of liberalism -- check
hatred of democracy - check
national religious tests -- chedk
love of "purity" -- check
love of a distant pure national ideal - check
Democrats are correct on this one.
Now lets do how progressives are like Marxists.
Cultist glorification of utopian ideologies--check
Globalist masturbation (open borders faggots)--check
Worship of rioting and property destruction--check
Fetishizing minorities--check
Overvaluing intellections--check
Hatred of liberalism--check
Hatred of high-trust communities--check
National struggle sessions--check
Love of solipism--check
Love of a distant pure communist ideal--check
Republicans are correct on this one.
The hicklib pederast self-owns again.
Self own? You depicted prog/Marxists okay in your list.
As a classic liberal I have no love for progs/Marxists. I have repeatedly said as bad as Trump is Bernie Sanders is worse.
So no "self own" you moron.
Funny; I don't see much in there as a definition of fascist. The few that do appear to be much more lefty than right.
love of a distant pure national ideal – check
Love of a distant pure communist ideal–check
Nationalist fervor (flag waving flaggots) --- Doesn't even bounce off the authoritarian nature of the left; since the USA **********IS******* a Constitutional Union of Republican States than ensures **INDIVIDUAL** Liberty and Justice...
P.S. Hating the [WE] mob rules democracy isn't a sign of Fascism as lefties would have morons believe. Many fascist nations came about by [WE] mobs rule.
No, you Bible-beating assholes are the authoritarians.
My list above is a list of fascist characteristics.
RedneckRock did a Marxist utopia list.
Keep up.
"you Bible-beating assholes are the authoritarians... My list above is a list of fascist characteristics"
You're on a list of fascist characteristics all right:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirchenkampf#Nazi_persecution_of_the_Christian_churches
I challenge anyone to find the difference between Mussolini's religious views and Buttplug's:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benito_Mussolini#Atheism_and_anti-clericalism
ML isn’t religious. He just loves sucking conservative Christian cock. Their bigotry, homophobia, nationalism, and authoritarianism really turn his incel ass on.
The hicklib pederast pretends he isn't a hicklib pederast.
Also, notice his "fascist checklist" omits the actual economic programs of fascist regimes.
Yes because all those public works projects were the reason the Nazis killed the Jews. It had nothing to do with their fervent nationalism and antisemitism.
There’s a lot more nationalism and antisemitism in conservative circles than lefty ones in America today.
lol.... Blinded by ignorance. Which party was that profoundly antisemitism statement by Ilhan Omar part of again? Which party want's the grow 'federal' (as in national) dictation more and more.
UR so full of sh*t I think you lefties must be just trolling for attention.
And many Democrats criticized her for it.
There’s far more hatred and bigotry on the right in this country.
Ya Right; The activities during the Trump Administration certainly cleared that up; With Democrats taking over Seattle, burning down police stations, rioting all over the place and throwing Molotov cocktails like nobodies business.... UR F'en delusional.
What did Republican's do? Oh yeah; that's right they waved American Flags and tossed a fire extinguisher off a platform - WhooptieDo, call in the Reichtag Fire bomb squad and shoot some veterans, deny any investigation, and by all means censor the sitting president of the USA...
Never-mind the B.S. in congress like 'WearWhite' against Trump and their wildly aggressive outbursts and Pelosi absolutely refusing to shake Trumps hand. Pure ignorant, sexist, racist hatred all the way through.
... And your Kill all Rednecks and Mormon falls right into the hatred and bigotry of the left... PROJECTION is the lefts ONLY substance of character.
Rednecks aren’t a ethnicity or religious group. Mormons have it coming and choose to belong to an evil church.
You downplay the capitol riot, but think Pelosi being mean to Trump is a big deal? Trump’s mean to everyone.
Hatred of non-straight white Christians has always been a problem for cons. I don’t see what civil disturbances or riots reacting to cops killing non-whites(cops are overwhelmingly conservative) has to do with this?
Oh; I see. Whatever you hate and are bigoted about is right but what anyone else does is wrong... UR such a cliche.
You’re such a moron if you think you’re making any sense.
And never-mind Ben Shapiro who many Republicans champion who ironically is Jewish...
Bernie Sanders is Jewish. There’s Jews associated with all ideologies.
The neo-Nazis and the “unite the right” crowd crowd supported Trump.
Isn't it funny how you can't make any point or claim but just continue to grand-stand your partisan-hacked prejudice.. You might need to look into that.
What the fuck are you smoking? You said “Shapiro’s Jewish” and I pointed out how there’s both left and right jews.
What point did you fucking make?
The point that your claims are F.O.S.
I’m not sure what your thing is with Mormons, but I push back on your statement that they chose to belong to the LDS church. Most are born into it, and might be facing paying a huge price socially, especially loss of family,
if they left it.
Sure, you hicklib pederast, which is why you're constantly shilling neoliberal talking points.
Let's see how Shrike does on the Nazi score card:
Advocates corporatism - ✓
Hates the
JewsJewish State - ✓Hates religious minorities - ✓
Advocates Kirchenkampf - ✓
Internment camps for political dissidents - ✓
Aktion T4 package - infanticide, abortion, eugenics for mentally handicapped - ✓
A united Europe - ✓
Authoritarian "top men" elitism - ✓
Scientific racism (CRT) - ✓
Brownshirt's party militias (Antifa, BLM) - ✓
Nobody is a purer Nazi here than Buttplug.
This isn't hyperbole either, folks. Jeff and Shrike have actually advocated all that stuff here before. Somehow they thought it was fine to post their misanthropic Nazi claptrap on an ostensibly libertarian site.
Whoops, forgot to mention all the times Shrike has waxed rhapsodical about censorship, deplatforming and bookburning too. Nobody hates free speech more than Shrike.
You're a fucking full time liar.
Open societies cherish freedoms.
you are a modern day Savonarola and you know it.
that is why you hate me - because I am an Ayn Rand atheist.
No, I hate you because you're a paid Democratic Party shillbot, and a literal Nazi.
You’re a lying piece of shit.
You're an antisemitic sockpuppet of Shrike's created to troll Chuck P.
Pretty pathetic that you have to samefag to try to score a point.
There you’re lying again. Please cite me being anti Semitic or stop calling me it.
You accused me of advocating “infanticide, abortion, eugenics for mentally handicapped” once. I’m pro choice, but have never advocated the other two.
I’ll cite this post as evidence of your homophobia.
Why do you lie so much you pathetic hick? It’s not my fault your stuck in shithole rural BC.
"but have never advocated the other two"
As your Buttplug sock you sure as hell did during the Ralph Northam debacle, you devious fuck.

Are you Mormon?
Mormons hate Jews, but LOVE Israel.

Hadrian didn’t rename Judea “Syria Palestinia” in the 2nd century?
Yes the West Bank was part of Jordan, NOT ISRAEL.
Shame on you for supporting Israeli terrorists..."
Hating the kike-riddled Jewish State totes isn't the same as being an anti-Semite folks.
I can’t control what others post. I’m not buttplug.
Criticizing Mormons for being anti-Semitic makes me anti-semitic? Are you that stupid?
Are a lot of the Jews I know are anti-semitic too because they criticize Israel?
criticism of Israel is not anti-semitism. I witnessed plenty of anti Semitism in Utah. Your bullshit just trivializes it. Shame on you.
You’re the one using the k word you lying asshole.
I see you didn’t try to back up your infanticide and eugenics claims.
"plenty of anti Semitism in Utah"
Let me guess; Salt Lake City - One of the few area's in UT that vote's majority Democrat????
No Utah county. One of the most conservative places in the country.
I don't remember Ayn Rand ever advocating for murdering her political enemies with state violence. Or sexually abusing children and posting the pornographic evidence in public. I'm referring, of course, to the time that you posted child pornography at Reason.com and got your original Sarah Palin's Buttplug account banned.
You don’t even know what corporatism is. What you accuse people of is a Corporatocracy.
I don’t know if others have advocated, but you accused me of a lot of this bullshit and you were lying.
You’re a fucking lying waste of life.
I made Shrike so mad he pulled out his toughest puppet.
Point out the item on that list that Reichsführer Buttplug hasn't advocated here.
I can’t speak for other posters, but you’ve lied about me with that shit before, so I assume you’re lying know.
You lie all the time. You’re a Trump worshipping fascist.
"I can’t speak for other posters"
Yeah, you're not actually tricking anyone, Herr Goebbels.
You’re only making yourself look like the scared little fascist you’re by lying all the time.
Pathetic little boy.
are you talking to yourself again?
Fuck off traitor
Also I'm guessing you looked up corporatism for the first time to make your post Shrike, and still fucked it up. How embarrassing for you.
The Nazis practiced corporatism as an intermediate step to full state socialism. They never once practiced or advocated the equally horrific Corporatocracy.
I don't think that you (Shrike) want a corporatocracy. You want corporatism.
You claim Facebook and twitter(corporations) are colluding with the govt. Thats corporatocracy moron.
Please cite where I’ve advocated corporatism?
You lie about everything you miserable piece of trash.
No, collusion is corporatism you fantastic retard. Corporatocracy would be if the country was owned and operated by Facebook and Twitter. They're related concepts but they're not the same process.
You're too retarded to troll here Shrike. If I were your boss at the fifty-cent factory I would have canned your ass for incompetence by now.

Fuck Donald Trump
Hey! Get back on the GOP plantation! How dare you try an escape.
I love how much "Fuck Joe Biden!" bothers you guys.
They're upset because after 4 years they only got stupid shit like "Orange Hitler" or "Drumpf".
Sometimes the simplest saying works. Fuck Joe Biden.
Man the tds is strong. He isnt even in office. Youre allowed to criticize the left. Usually needed if you are still pretending to be a centrist or libertarian.
So original.
"WASHINGTON—The U.S. plans to launch new trade talks with China, but will maintain tariffs on Chinese imports as it presses Beijing to fulfill pledges to buy more U.S. goods and services, according to Biden administration officials."
https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-to-press-china-on-trade-pact-keep-tariffs-in-place-11633338000?
Anyone who failed to reelect Trump because they thought Biden would be better on trade and immigration, is eating crow.
Yeah, Trump made China promise to buy a ton of American made goods and cranked up the tariffs, and Biden is pressing them to abide by the agreement Trump negotiated with them.
Meanwhile, the border crisis even worse with Biden than it was under Trump, except Biden's action with Haitians goes beyond anything Trump ever did. Obama rescinded the wet foot/dry foot policy, but before that, Haitians could at least get an asylum hearing if they showed up in Texas. Biden seems to be treating them all like they were caught by the Coast Guard at sea.
With Trump, you get A, B, C, D, E
With Biden you get D, E, F, G, H
"D" turned out to be trade, and "E" turned out to be immigration--and anyone who made their decision between those two on the basis of "D" and "E" will hopefully learn something from the experience--especially if they didn't want "G" and "H", which turned out to be the Green New Deal and the radical expansion of socialist entitlement programs.
And deportations based on skin color.
Yeah, the differences between the way he treated Haitians and the way he's treating people from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras were objectively racist, but that's to be expected. Progressives are very racist, and I'm not kidding. The progressives vaccine mandates are objectively racist. The way they disproportionately trap black kids in failing public schools is objectively racist. The way progressive city councils in places like Chicago, Minneapolis, and New York historically protect their police from brutality claims is objectively racist. Turning to progressives for solutions to racism is like asking Harvey Weinstein to write your sexual harassments policy manual. It suppose it would be hilariously hypocritical if all that progressive racism didn't hurt so many innocent people.
In St. Louis, our board of aldermen tried to make it illegal to walk down the street 'flipping handles' - which is a term for testing a parked car's doors to see if they are actually locked or not.
One of the progressive criticisms of this measure was that it was 'racist'. They apparently believe that only black people steal things from parked cars.
What if I don’t want A, B, G or H? What if A is undermining democracy and pushing partisan hatred to the point we are on the verge of civil war?
What if you're a mincing little pussy who had to move to red-state Idaho because you decided you couldn't handle life in your blue-state utopia anymore?
What if you quit squawking bird.
We would breathe a cawllective sigh of relief.
Yeah remember that time Donald Trump passed unconstitutional election laws through judicial fiat, then jailed hundreds of peaceful protesters indefinitely without bail or trial for misdemeanor trespassing and instigated mobs to murder 3 dozen people, beat hundreds more, attempt to burn hundreds of people alive in a federal court house, and destroy 3 billion dollars worth of private property? That was crazy!
"Fuck Donald Trump"
both sides™
Is there something wrong with a libertarian being critical of both major parties and their political figureheads?
Not as long as they can reasonably show Trump grew the Oppressive POWER of the government like Obama or Biden is doing.
Caw caw!
Fuck Lyndon B. Johnson
"Fuck Grover Cleveland!"
Not at all. But you're not a libertarian, and you are only critical of one political party or any of its real or imagined figureheads.
"Finally, some good news."
Instead of deceptively promoting left wing policies and propaganda as libertarianism, had ENB actually monitored daily covid data during the past month, she wouldn't have waited until now to report that covid cases, hospitalizations and deaths declined significantly (as ENB's left wing allies imposed even more draconian vaccine and mask mandates).
All the Twitter that’s fit to print.
I sometimes wonder what would happen to "news reporting" if the cut and paste function were disabled for 60 days.
They'd rerelease the archives with new, clickbaity headlines.
It would be ugly.
As we watch the battle over the infrastructure bill and the $3.5 budget reconciliation bill unfold, I'm seeing three big stories that hardly anyone seems to be talking about.
1) Now that Biden and the Democrats' leadership have relinked the infrastructure bill and the reconciliation bill together (making the infrastructure bill contingent on the Senate passing the reconciliation bill), the Republicans in the Senate may no longer be willing to help the Senate Democrats pass the infrastructure bill.
Yeah, I know they voted for the bill once, but that was when it was a stand-alone bill. If the bill is altered in any way in the House, the opportunity to vote on it again will come, and far fewer Republicans will be willing to vote for the infrastructure bill if it means enabling the Senate Democrats to pass the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill.
Yeah, those 19 Republicans said they'd give the Democrats a ride to the airport, but that was before they found out the Democrats were working with Al Qaeda.
2) Time is not on Biden's side when it comes to passing the $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill.
Congress usually takes a recess for the month of August to go home to campaign and do fundraising, but I don't think they did that this year--fighting over these bills. Meanwhile, their primary challengers and opponents are back home making friends, raising money, kissing babies, and influencing people.
In addition to that, Biden's popularity continues to circle the drain with
Independents[swing voters], which is ultimately what's driving the opposition to his reconciliation bill among moderate Democrats. Time is not on Biden's side unless you expect him to become more likeable to swing voters over time. So far, more familiarity with Biden has only bred contempt.3) This battle is exposing the progressives as radicals to average Americans--rather than progressives enjoying the image as centrists so many progressives and people in the news media like to project them as being.
Most Americans still think of "progressive" as an adjective rather than a proper noun for someone in the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and most Americans couldn't tell you who Pramila Jayapal was to save their lives. That's changing, and it isn't good for progressives (or the Democratic party). If voters start differentiating between Progressive Democrats and establishment democrats, they may start splitting their votes like some people did between establishment Republicans and Tea Party Republicans.
Before this, they were all just Democrats. There may be plenty of people out there who will vote for Democrats but not Progressive Democrats--once they come to understand the differences between them. And the progressives are giving the American people a crash course in the differences between them right now. If there are people who, genuinely, wouldn't vote for Republicans because of Trump, people who won't vote for Democrats if it means supporting Pramila Jayapa, and she very well could be the frontrunner to become Speaker after Pelosi.
What do you think, Godshall?
I tend to agree with Ken's most recent analysis.
But I remain concerned that ten or more RINOs in the US Senate will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by once again voting for the infrastructure bill (knowing that doing so will give left wing Democrats a huge victory on a slightly modified $2.5 - $3 Trillion reconciliation bill that will make the US a socialist nation, further increase inflation, cause worldwide economic depression, and further encourage China to invade Taiwan).
most Americans couldn’t tell you who Pramila Jayapal was to save their lives.
"Oh, that's easy! Jabba the Hutt's second-in-command! No? Wait, wait, don't tell me! It's like Pad Thai, right? No? The new version of PayPal? No? Crap, I give up!"
Even if you support Manchin's 1.5T reduction, it still puts the Covid spending at nearly 5T total. There is still 1T left unspent from last years bill.
Settling for Manchin's 1.5T isn't settling at all. It is capitulating.
Trump supporters are wrong to compare Democrats to socialists. Also, Biden’s nominee for comptroller thinks the Soviet system was superior to ours.
—ENB
People should be clear about the definitions of these terms.
Socialism is when industry is dominated by government, prices are set by government, and wealth is distributed by government.
The Progressive Congressional Caucus is clearly socialist. They dominate the House, they control the Budget chair in the Senate, and the president is siding with them in their fight against the moderates. Yes, the "Democrats" should be compared to socialists, and because not every one of them isn't a socialist doesn't mean it isn't an apt description for 99 of them in House, Bernie Sanders in the Senate, and for the policies the president is supporting that cater to them.
Is it okay to call Bernie Sanders a socialist if he calls himself a socialist? Or is that still verboten?
P.S. Capitalism is when industry is dominated by private parties, prices are set by markets, and wealth is distributed by markets.
Rights are the obligation to respect other people's choices. They arise as an aspect of agency like morality itself.
Authoritarianism is using the coercive power of government to force people to do things against their will without consideration for their rights.
Libertarianism is when people are free to make choices for themselves so long as they don't violate anyone's rights.
Capitalism
You mean the free market. Capitalism is a propaganda term coined by marxists to slander free market economics.
^ALL OF THIS by Ken Shultz and Moonrocks... +100000
Agreed. I try to always use "free markets" instead of "capitalism".
Not because of Marx having coined the term, capitalism. The British coined the term, Yankee Doodle, but Americans took it and ran with it.
The problem with the word, capitalism, is that it is closely associated with "crony capitalism". And, crony capitalism is a real, problematic thing that is not in keeping with free markets at all.
Rightfully termed as Crony Socialism.
Capitalism is a corporate governing system that allows for the separation of ownership and management. It allows for the investment of resources in enterprises that may not be (distinguished from are not) managed by those investors.
Ken is correct that self identified "progressives" are socialists, who are in fact regressives, which is why I haven't referred to any left wing Democrats or media reporters/outlets as "progressive" for the past decade, and why I prefer to correctly call them "regressives".
If other libertarians (as well as conservatives and independents) began truthfully calling socialists "regressives" instead of "progressives", politically naive Americans would soon realize they've been duped.
They are more fascist at this point as they work closely with industry to now push their rules and regulations.
"People should be clear about the definitions of these terms."
It's a lost battle to be precise about the definitions of "liberal", "capitalist", "socialist", or "fascist". At least in American popular discourse, the meanings of these terms have parted ways with their original meanings. Unless you really enjoy being misunderstood, just accept it.
Hey what a surprise. Mikey, who called a few hundred unarmed people walking through the US capitol building and 10 or so of them breaking windows a deadly insurrection, thinks we ought to go along with the Orwellian perversion of language and redefinition of terms to suit Marxist sensibilities.
>>Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR.
but the pee on the bed story is the reality wtf
This one found that a "strong majority" of Trump supporters falsely believe there is no real difference between Democrats and socialists.
So which one is AOC? And why is there an organization like DSA?
Photographer Chris Arnade has a new newsletter.
who?
I’m guessing someone who paid ENB for sex one time.
A "simple way to expand access to health care"? Fix the medical residency system.
Yeah, that'll do it.
A “simple way to expand access to health care”?
Fire all the nurses who aren't vaxxed?
That would be a big change. That link indicates we could get an additional 2000 MD's per year just by have as many residencies as med school graduates. If Medicare shortened the residency subsidy from 5 years down to 2 (they suggest 4 to 2 is better), it would massively tilt doctors towards generalists (the main areas of shortage) and away from specialists (many of which are really in surplus - which is the main driver of overutilization).
Biden's comptroller pick yearns for the USSR

They'll be fine. The next "infrastructure" bill will include hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out
leftistdistressed municipalities affected by theself-imposedOrange Man's lockdowns. This is going to become a bigger and bigger issue. If we opened up this year, then nearly everyone who was in the office before the lockdowns would have been made to go back. Stretching it out to two years, means that companies are investing in the infrastructure that let' their employees work from home. They are also hiring new people with no concern for if they have desk space, and in many cases are letting employees move to locations or operate in locations that they wouldn't have allowed if they'd been in the office. (This happened with my employer. Our secondary location has gone from a technicality to allow us to keep one employee, to the location where we've hired 6 new employees and had two old employees move out to, because being in the same office space for back burnered for a year. )
When we eventually lift restrictions, companies are gong to find a bunch of costs related to forcing employees back into expensive cities that they never would have had to deal with otherwise.

Photo suggests basketball without backboards, but I don't know, either,
It looks like a cross between basketball and European handball.
Apparently most of Australia missed the point. Men need to start doing this here. Hell, they didn't even need to wear the skirts that the women wear.
French and Goldberg are conservative writers?
in the late '90s sense.
It's mostly because these guys are terrified that if things do go south, they might have to actually put some skin in the game for once in their otherwise useless lives, assuming they don't fuck off to New Zealand in the wake of the society they helped destroy with their general obsequiousness to cultural leftism.
It's true that men and women generally working the same job got paid the same but there are other truths that are missing which make the lack a gender pay in the USSR a lie of omission.
1. Everyone was paid poorly. Doctors, engineers etc. were making substandard wages compared to the US if they were even paid at all.
2. Women were forced to work and the jobs they were forced to work were menial. Even now in post-Soviet countries, you'll see women bent over sweeping up parks, streets and in front of building using brooms that they made that morning with a stick and twigs or using handmade paint brushes to whitewash anything below waist level including the trees. They are never men. Every school has a cleaning lady in every wing on every floor that mops up using T-shaped handles with old towels wrapped around the end, wringing them out by hand (if there is water because even now there usually isn't) to mop the hall floors between every class period.
3. Teachers in schools were almost always women with the directors being men. Not getting paid for months on end was common and when they were paid, the wages were extremely low but the rare men teachers did get paid the same as the women.
4. No matter their pay, they still couldn't buy things up to western standards if they were available.
5. Free labor was required of everyone in off hours. The reward for cleaning up the park all day Saturday was a beer and a stale bread for lunch.
6. GULAGs. There's a joke in the show "Servant of the People" in Ukraine where someone is in the bathroom and the old man says, "They're here to take you away." The reply from the person in the bathroom says, "I'm not getting out. I haven't fallen for that one since 1994."
I lived in Ukraine for almost 2 years and worked in the schools, coming back because of COVID, and saw this for myself and heard stories of Soviet times from many people who experience it. Anyone who has anything nice to say about the USSR is either lazy, crazy or power hungry.
.. lazy, crazy or power hungry.
3 requirements to be in the SleepyJoe regime.
don't bother trainer. You can't speak reason to a socialist who has never experienced socialism.
The problem, Trainer, is you just don't understand socialism the way we do.

Sure, there was a Gulag, and no private property, but maternity benefits!
By the way, all snark aside, this is an entirely mainstream view amongst even centrist Democrats. This is not the stuff of a few fringe crazies with no power in the party, this absolutely mainstream.
You'll own nothing and be happy.
Eleanor Clift expressed this exact viewpoint in the 1990s when she continuously defended the Cuban regime. Eleanor Clift isn't some kind of crazy AOC/progressive/Sanders/Squad caucus. She's a mainstream political reporter who (ostensibly) did straight, unbiased news.
Teachers in schools were almost always women with the directors being men . . . . when they were paid, the wages were extremely low but the rare men teachers did get paid the same as the women
So, the result was exactly the same as here, in the end.
According to the Houston Independent School District website, teacher salaries start at almost $55,000 for 9 months of work. Make it a bilingual STEM teacher and we're talking over $70,000. This propaganda that teachers are paid poorly is directly from the unions.
I remember when NPR was trying to strum the heartstrings of their listeners by reporting on the plight of a teacher making over $100k a year who was going to have to delay her early retirement by a few years because of changes to the pension system.
There was also the infamous Time story a few years back about the unfortunate teacher who couldn't afford all of the things she wanted. It was heartbreaking.
The point is that the men and women are in different jobs that pay differently, which in this country = "Gender Pay Gap," even though the actual jobs pay the same.
Actually there's evidence that many times, the same job pays more for women.
I have it on very good authority from all my teacher friends that have 2 weeks off at Christmas, a week at Thanksgiving, Spring Break, most federal holidays, and a 2-month summer break summer that it isn't only 9 months because they have 2 days of seminars in summer they have to attend.
In my experience everyone involved in public school management is female. Meetings are a regular estrogen-fest.
Same in the sense that women and men in the same job get paid the same, but if you tally up the total earned by All Women and the total earned by All Men, the latter is larger, even in the enlightened USSR.
New COVID-19 cases have fallen to about 105,000 per day in the United States.
The number of COVID-19-related hospitalizations also decreased this past week.
The daily vaccination rate in the United States has crept bac, up to 720,000 per day. Experts say that elected and community leaders need to continue to promote the benefits of vaccination.
"...The way hospitalization data are trending may see at odds with constant (and ongoing) news reports that medical facilities in various areas are overcrowded..."
Mike, JFree, sarc or one of the other chicken littles who hope for a risk-free life make this claim, but if you bother opening the links, they are always from some town in Idaho, with a total of 3 IC beds available. And then, if you read the article, they are not turning away patients, they MIGHT have to IF things go bad.
The dishonesty of the media is tiresome to say the least; always assume the headlines are bullshit.
people's salaries were set (by the state) in a gender-blind manner. And all women got very generous maternity benefits.
Anyone want to break it to her that that means their pay wasn't equal?
I learned from OBL that is wrong to assume only women should be given maternity benefits.
So
The Democrats are afraid of the bogeyman they imagined in their Heads.
The Republicans are afraid self-proclaimed National Socialists (i.e. Nazi's) are going to take over the USA; partly by pretend-ending the USA is but a [WE] mobs democracy instead of the **CONSTITUTIONAL** Union of Republican State's it really is.
And no matter how many times you tell the Bogeyman spooks this; it just bounces off their ignorant skulls like jello.
French's column is pegged to a recent poll showing high percentages of Trump voters and Biden voters are itching for civil war:
Wait, for the last few years, there's been an end of the political spectrum that has been screaming 'REVOLUTION' since... the 60s, and we peg the problem with Trump voters?
Ok then, you do you.
They mean well!
Just so you know, THIS Trump voter voted for Trump in 2020 because I DIDN'T want a civil war. I thought the Civil war that was going on in the streets during... all of 2020 was unsavory and would lead to nothing good.
You voted for a man who engaged in daily divisive, hateful rhetoric because you thought it would lead away from civil war?
I voted for the man who stood up to an entire political philosophy that was full of divisive, hateful rhetoric and expressly wanted a civil war, and were acting on it.
"stood up to" meaning engaged in the same type of divisive, hateful rhetoric he was supposedly standing up to. How is that supposed to help the situation?
Note that White Mike omits from his lament that the "divisiveness" pejorative is always thrown around by the left whenever their agenda is resisted with any noticeable vigor, particularly with the use of "fascism" as a catch-all for this resistance.
If you don't roll over for the left, you're being "divisive." That's why a couple of buttermilk biscuits like Goldberg and French keep wringing their hands over it.
Except when Obama was president, in which case the opposition of those on the right to decidedly leftist policies was solely due to racism.
You're so obsessed with calling people out as being closet leftists that you ignore what they say. Dude said Trump was responding to divisiveness from the left. As in the left was divisive first. His complaint is that Trump fought fire with fire. He never said the left wasn't divisive. Are we reading the same comments?
I don’t think they read my comments, do much as emotionally react to them.
I learned my lesson the last time I took people off mute. I thought maybe this time they can have a conversation. I was wrong. RR isn't there yet. But he probably will be.
Red Rocks pegged you both right out of the gate, "If you don’t roll over for the left, you’re being “divisive.”"
You’re so obsessed with calling people out as being closet leftists that you ignore what they say.
I didn't call him a leftist, I called him a pussy who's afraid to stand up to leftists. Learn the difference.
I mean, this isn't the first time you've claimed I said something I didn't actually say. Maybe try sipping your own medicine for once and actually read the words before you respond to them.
Why is he, or anyone, obligated to stand up against what you want them to stand up against?
Why are they a pussy for not joining in your fight?
And why is more divisiveness the solution to divisiveness?
PROJECTION 101 --
Lefties run around calling everything on sex, race or wealth-class.
Then have the audacity to call any resistance to their LABELING scheme's sexist, racist and greedy.....
That's what projecting is....
Because White Mike hasn't been regurgatating hateful rhetoric the last five years, not him.

It is now crystal clear Trump is monster. If you still support him, you are a bad person. There is no ambiguity, no wiggle room anymore.
I have no idea who the trolls are who the puppets are, I just can't keep up with the 2d checkers.
But I hear this CONSTANTLY and consistently. If you support trump, you are ipso facto an awful person. I don't say that about Biden voters. I may think they're misinformed, and honestly the WORST elements of the Democratic party-- the group that are really awful people, didn't really support Biden. I don't see any evidence that your BLM/Antifa activist really liked Biden.
"If you support trump, you are ipso facto an awful person."
I am sure there are people who say that. Personally, I distinguish between people who reluctantly vote for Trump because they feel he is the worst of bad choices, and people who actually support or have enthusiasm for him. The latter _are_ awful people.
Mother’s post just above, which you can’t see because you muted him, but everyone else can, shows that you’re lying. And nobody that posts here regularly is surprised that you’re lying.
That's dumb. I know plenty of people who enthusiastically voted for Trump who are good people. They're just stupid when it comes to politics.
OK, I’ll buy that. Just being stupid instead of intentionally awful.
Sarc and Dee: not lefties, and not trolls.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... whew, lad. You really don't think people will remember your own BS, do you?
And even after I posted a quote of you doing exactly that.
Does anyone still doubt that this guy is anything other than a troll?
and we peg the problem with Trump voters?
I read a pieced on the Daily Mail a few days ago referencing a poll that showed both Democrats and Republicans feel basically the same about each other. The other side is a threat to American values. The other side is a cancer growing within. Each side wouldn't object to a strongman from their party ignoring Congress. Aaaand, that both sides would definitely consider splitting up the country based upon red and blue.
None of it tried to peg Trump voters. The point was that there wasn't much of a difference between the two when asked questions about the other side.
Hi sarcasmic, glad to see that you've sobered up enough to see the keyboard and get back to shitposting.
Now that you're conscious again, I thought that I'd ask you what's up with the Sevo X Nardz gay fanfic that you wrote the other day.
I never thought I'd see a fanwank where someone ships Reason commenters.
What possessed you to do it? Does this stem from the time you imagined everybody jerking off?
"The point was" a LIE of distracting the underlying foundations ... because ... the USA is a Constitutional Union of Republican States NOT a Democracy.
The left has ALWAYS had the ability to maintain their Nazi-State Status; yet, they keep pushing EVERYTHING Federal. That alone tells the world the left isn't interested in being separate - they are only interested in conquering and consuming the right.
There's already a 50-State Split-up. The 'UNION' was ever granted a Nazi (def; National Socialist) Regime authority that left has given it.
"and we peg the problem with Trump voters"
You quoted a sentence that literally says "Trump voters and Biden voters".
Right, that's my chief complaint... BOWF SIDEZ! doesn't really fly here.
It is plainly restating what the poll found.
"There's no need to raise your voice, I'm right here. I'm just curious if you have any sources to back up your opinion?"
Mike Laursen in action.
Why not? What does the actions of hippies fifty years ago have to do with Trump supporters today? How many Trump supporters on these here comments claim there's a civil war going on right now?
Substantially fewer than the number of BLM/Antifa rioters who murdered 3 dozen people, savagely beat and attacked hundreds of others, attempted to burn hundreds of people alive in an arson attack on a federal building, and destroyed 3 billion dollars worth of private property last year with you defending them and stating unequivocally that uniformed police officers arresting a dozen or so of the people identified on camera committing terrorist acts and perpetrating violence was literal Nazism.
"Trump supporters falsely believe there is no real difference between Democrats and socialists."
Article then goes on to talk about the democrat comptroller wants USSR style banking. tell me again how believing Democrats are socialist is false when their policies are literally take from socialist
also ironic that the democrats described are not described as "falsely" believing republicans are fascist
we know where the author stands
French’s column is pegged to a recent poll showing high percentages of Trump voters and Biden voters are itching for civil war:
This is a mischaracterization of the poll but what else do you expect from lefty journalists?
No one was asked if they want civil war. They were asked if they supported breaking up the union. Doesn't require war.
Doesn’t require war.
History disagrees.
Yes, we know you're a totalitarian warmonger who supports the summary murder of your political opponents in the fine tradition of totalitarian warmongers of years past, sarcasmic.
Breaking up the US would most assuredly result in violence. The Dallas-to-San Antonio spine, Houston, and the Rio Grande Valley most assuredly would not go along with the Republic of Texas coming back in to existence. The Western Slope of Colorado is absolutely salivating at the thought of blowing up the water tunnels that bring the Colorado River across the Continental Divide. California's northern and eastern counties would pop off and we'd see all kinds of industrial sabotage. Upstate New Yorkers would tell New York City to fuck off, and likely line up the lawmakers in Albany up against the wall. West Virginia and the western Virgina counties would combine and dare Richmond to send in the Guard to stop it. We'd likely see a no-shit race war in the Deep South, including Florida.
It would basically be rural vs urban. Cities vs the rest.
Who do you suppose might win?
Waco is in that spine so it is iffy about that whole area going one way or the other. But yes it would get messy.
again, you may be right that it would only end in violence but the POLL was not about civil war.
Weird that cases fell exactly when the seasonality theorists said that they would.
Sooner or later maybe we should start listening to the people who have been correct the last 15 months instead of the clueless 'leaders' who show up on TV?
You mean listen to Dangerous Disinformation Conspiracy Theorists instead of the Experts?
“Weird that cases fell exactly when the seasonality theorists said that they would.”
Can you provide a cite to these predictions?
We've been telling you exactly when and where the summer spike would occur since at least April, when Fauci had no idea why cases were dropping in Texas. We told you that it would recede without NPIs. We told you to expect the fall lull before the winter wave crashes over the entire country.

April 21 talking about how the virus was seasonal. I just picked an article at random from April + covid. I'm sure going through all the other articles will show similar comments.
No response from Dee. Surprising.
People have been discussing this in these comments for over a year you disingenuous weasel.
I dunno if I can search my old comments or not, but I expect that it would be little but talking about the seasonality of covid in the last 15 months.
