CDC Director Recognizes Confusion Over COVID-19 Booster Vaccines
Plus: Brothel raids, rapid COVID-19 testing, and more...

"I recognize that confusion," Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky said on Sunday, asked by CBS News Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan about messaging discrepancies around COVID-19 vaccine booster shots.
President Joe Biden has been urging Americans to get a booster vaccine. But who exactly that applies to is unclear.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week authorized Pfizer booster shots for people ages 65 and older, younger people "at high risk of severe COVID-19," and anyone "whose frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2 puts them at high risk of serious complications of COVID-19 including severe COVID-19."
Then, a CDC advisory panel largely echoed the FDA's advice but disagreed about the necessity of a booster for people in certain jobs or institutional settings.
But Walensky stepped in and contradicted the CDC panel's recommendation. Per her advice, those with high-risk jobs or living situations should get a booster.
"Where there was some real scientific discussion and a scientific close call was for those people who are at high risk by virtue of where they live or where they work," she told Face the Nation yesterday:
Because of that close call and because of all the evidence we reviewed both at the FDA and at the CDC, I felt it was appropriate for those people to also be eligible for boosters. So, who are those people? Those are people who live and work in high-risk settings, that includes people in homeless shelters, people in group homes, people in prisons, but also, importantly, are people who work with vulnerable communities. So, our health care workers, our teachers, our grocery workers, our public transportation employees.
On Friday, Biden said:
If you got the Pfizer vaccine in January, February, March of this year and you're over 65 years of age, go get the booster. Or if you have a medical condition like diabetes, or you're a front-line worker, like a health care worker or a teacher, you can get a free booster now. I'll be getting my booster shot, it's hard to acknowledge I'm over 65, but I'll be getting my booster shot.
Biden also said his administration was still "looking to the time when we're going to be able to expand the booster shots, basically, across the board."
"The science may very well show that the rest of the population needs to be boosted, and we will provide those guidances as soon as we have the science to inform them," Walensky said yesterday.
Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told Face the Nation that for "people below the age of 50 who are otherwise healthy, I think it's an open question right now.…The data isn't strong to support the question either way."
And, for now, none of this discussion or the recommendations apply to people who got the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines. "FDA is working closely with Moderna and J&J to get and process their data as quickly as possible, with a goal of making booster recommendations for Moderna and J&J recipients in the coming weeks," U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said on Friday.
All in all, it's added up to a lot of confusion—even among doctors and health care workers—about who should get a COVID-19 booster vaccine and when. The definition of "high risk" seems especially malleable.
"Who's at high risk? I had to look it up. Is it firemen? I don't know," David Peterman, CEO of Idaho's Primary Health Medical Group, told The Washington Post. "This is so confusing to the public and creates mistrust. And we can't have that right now. Right now, we need the public to say, 'Let's get vaccinated.' And for those that need boosters, we need to say that 'This is safe, and this is what we need to do.'"

I recognize that confusion
AND I RELISH IN IT
Revel in it? Relish it?
Mrs. Casual commits these idiomatic portmanteaus all the time. If you're sleeping with my wife, I should probably tell you to get yourself checked out.
Maybe relish can ketchup to revel.
Never go full mustard.
Seriously I don’t know why more people haven’t tried this, I work two shifts, 2 hours in the day and 2 in the evening…FG And i get surly a check of $12600 what’s awesome is I m working from home so I get more time with my kids.
Try it, you won’t regret it!………......PAYPAL PAYS

And declaring what is information and what is misinformation is even more power.

[Shaking Pelosi pic] BACKDOOR DEALING INTENSIFIES
The democrats have been promising all weekend that the 3.5 Trillion (some say 5 T once gimmics removed) will cost nothing.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/jayapal-on-democrats-3-5-trillion-bill-its-a-zero-dollar-bill-since-itll-be-paid-for-with-taxes
A trillion here, a trillion there...
Is there an Overton Window for the federal budget?
not anymore
Are they going to start with collecting the $500k Biden owes?
Capone went to Alcatraz for less.
"IT'S OKAY BECAUSE TRUMP'S TAXES!
We're positive we'll find something there one day."
Nothing new. They claimed the ACA would pay for itself with saved hospitalization costs.
"The democrats have been promising all weekend that the 3.5 Trillion (some say 5 T once gimmicks removed) will cost nothing.
That seems to work on bond issue votes here. People never put two and two together at the time---"Don't you love our schools?"----but also never stop bitching about their higher taxes a few years down the road.
Yeah, when you're trying to spend 4.7 trillion dollars, the best idea is to rush.
Oh no, Fist! Now you've ruined me on buttsex for life! Maybe other libertarians too!
Saying "backdoor dealings" side-by-side with Nancy Lugosi is like putting syrup of epicac in the drinks of alcoholics!
Now all we libertarians have going for us are pot and Mexicans!
Ruined or invigorated?

In other words: authoritarianism.
Yep. "The researchers found that, more generally, tautological statements are tautologies."
Well, the study was funded by the Department of Redundancy Department
I would tell you something about redundancy, but I would be repeating myself. 😉
If that statement is true it must be true.
What exactly is the right sized concern for hierarchy? Asking for a friend.
Sally Sate works for the American Enterprise Institute which works for the interests of corporations like Exxon and assholes like Dick Cheney.
"In February 2007, a number of sources, including the British newspaper The Guardian, reported that the AEI had sent letters to scientists offering $10,000 plus travel expenses and additional payments, asking them to critique the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report."
Thanks captain ad hominem.
So, just like the Times and Post?
So, a lot like the grants that you only get if your research supports the main narrative. Yeah, there is potential for corruption here. But don't pretend like the scientists working for the IPCC are pure and uncorrupted by money and ideology.
As far as I'm concerned the purpose of all government funded research is to promote a political agenda.
Yeah, there is potential for corruption here.
Is there? Critique simply means to review for flaws. It sounds like a call for reviewers outside the regular peers who all using the same flawed modeling techniques based on contrived historical data.
My guess is the requests were sent to experts outside the 'environmental' sphere who understand specific aspects of the science and are otherwise unwilling to touch the debate with a pole so long it would provide enough leverage to move the world.
Sure, there always is. Offering money is a good way to get people to say what they think you want to hear. Not that that is a reason to distrust anyone in particular. Any professional scientist has to get funding from somewhere, so those incentives towards certain biases pretty much always exist.
"Offering money is a good way to get people to say what they think you want to hear. "
And that's just as true when the money is coming from the government (research grants).
Yes, that was my main point.
That Exxon line is almost like an isotope injection in a cancer victim. As soon as you see it, you know that they are the spawn of one of the typical Huffpo/DemUnderground cancerous masses in media. It is fantastic that idiots like Straz are so susceptible to it.
"EXXON BAD BECAUSE OIL CAUSES GLOBAL WARMING!!!"
Stroozle/Sullum claps like a seal.
The trouble is, people have been describing various things unrelated to each other as "authoritarian".
"Why did you need four wardens? Why did you need three vehicles to surround my house, when I have one possum who is not doing anything wrong?"
Normally I believe game wardens are vile creatures, but possums and opossums are vile creatures.
Except POGO.
"We have met the enemy, and he is us".
No truer words were ever spoken.
That's some seditious speech right there. Both the MAGAs and the Progressives would cancel Pogo's ass in a heartbeat.
And his cousin Sonic The Hedgehog is cool too.
Possums eat ticks and other bugs and apparently don't get rabies and sometimes they are cute
Their 'play dead' routine fooled the crap out of my neighbors dog - and my neighbor for that matter. She thought her dog killed the damned thing till it popped back up and hissed.
super cute. just had to relocate a tiny one from my garage it was tough to let him go.
WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF MY CHICKENS?
my next door neighbor is terrified of suburban wildlife so I'm extra-nice to the animals to spite him lol.

From the police/warden incident report:
"We arrived at the suspect's house at 12:35 AM and announced ourselves as police, then removed the suspect's door and restrained the suspect and 2 members of the suspect's family.
But the opossum appeared deceased upon our arrival, so we freed the suspect and his family and vacated the premises."
After tens of thousands of New York health care workers quit over the state's vaccine mandate, Gov. Kathy Hochul is considering declaring an emergency declaration that would deploy National Guard members trained in health care
After the dictator created a problem for no reason beyond pandering to their base, they believe they can solve it not by undoing the decision but pressing a new magic button.
Yep, and those NG members trained in health care are likely already working in NY health care.
Or more sinister, they want us to normalize seeing uniform soldiers in our daily business.
It is almost like policy makers have trouble understanding the concept of trade-offs.
I get it, the arguments for adding COVID-19 vaccines to the existing vaccine mandates for health care workers are far from trivial.
But they impose burdens, which places barriers to health care employmnent. If too many health care workers quit or are fired, then there is a net downside to these additions to the vaccine mandate.
At least Governor Deval Patrick had the good sense to suspend the H1N1 vaccine mandate when it had a similar effect.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/10/24/new.york.flu.vaccine/index.html
Well, the political net upside is, when health care facilities have to shut down beds because they don't have the staff to cover them, they can cry about HOSPITALS ARE OVERWHELMED! THEY'RE AT 100 MILLION PERCENT CAPACITY!
David Paterson as an incomplete clone of Deval Patrick makes a lot of sense, actually.
It is almost like policy makers have trouble understanding the concept of trade-offs.
I've heard that somewhere before.
Where will the next state get it's extra healthcare capacity. If this goes nationwide then what?
The vax mandate states will pay an arm and a leg to entice vaccinated health care workers to come to their states to work through this and the non-vax states will get to do the same for unvaccinated workers.
It's already nationwide, I work in a health care adjacent field and every time another government puts a mandate in place for nurses they either have to delay it, scrap it or commit to paying through the nose for replacements from out of state.
Other sectors are also impacted.
The Starbucks close to me is only open until 11 now, because 3/4 of the staff quit.
The grocery store shelves are half empty because they lost half of the staff that stock the shelves (they just happened to be mostly black).
Even before these businesses did mandates they couldn't hire anyone.
Shoot, everywhere around me seems to be fully staffed.
Different demographics? Fewer national chains?
I also live where companies were already understaffed. Combined factors.
Also, if Biden through OSHA gets his way this will be all hospitals in the country that will need more staff.
If we fail to fully understand what justice is—and to distinguish between justice and vengeance—then fears of crime and fears of law enforcement may cause us to amplify and repeat the profound injustices of the recent past...
How about good, old fashion legislative problem-creating-then-"solving" and criminal justice industrial complex lobby propaganda?
I love that Reason cannot get enough of David French once he showed how up for sale his beliefs are.
It's amazing how popular all these neocons are now that they've become useful to the Democratic Party.
It would "allow qualified health care professionals licensed in other states or countries, recent graduates, retired and formerly practicing health care professionals to practice in New York State."
Solving a problem she created and collecting out of state income tax!
It's like hitting two peasants with one stone!
It's even better than that. The nurses are all making a fortune by working for agencies, rates are double what they were before the pandemic. In NY, they have the privilege of paying agency fees to the nursing unions. The Governor and most of NY's political class get to benefit from the political donations of those unions.
I'm not insinuating that they are instituting these mandates with that in mind, but they aren't complaining either.
The definition of "high risk" seems especially malleable.
It's between "moderate risk" and "severe risk", DUH!
Ludicrous risk
Plaid.
While cases in lower-vaccinated states have decreased dramatically, the gap in death rates has widened.
It's going to be the opposite of hilarious when cases cycle back around to make it obvious once again that vaccination rates aren't anywhere close to the only factor at play here.
It’s quite clear that vaccination is a major factor here. What is it you think you are gaining for trying so hard to undermine confidence in the vaccines?
Do you think you are sticking it to your partisan opponents, the liberals? It’s conservatives that are dying off.
IT'S MASKS, DAMNIT!
PUT ON YOUR MASK!
Did I say anything about masks? Now that we have vaccines virtually everyone should forget about masks, unless they are like working in a hospital and have access to properly-designed masks.
Yes. You have. You've just moved onto your next leftist inspired virtue signal.
"Did I say anything about masks? "
For the benefit of the thread, in fact Mike has said much about masks in the past. His entire MO is to pick the strongest sounding liberal position (based on evidence available today) and act as if he is just a reasonable guy who is following the evidence. Next week or next month when things have changed, he will be back in here completely ignoring the stances he took in the past and going after the latest, strongest liberal position to take.
Don't believe me? Just a few weeks ago liberals were piling on anyone who talked about ivermectin. It got so bad that those liberals were fooled by a totally fake story from Rolling Stone Magazine- including Mike. And when the story unraveled mere days later, he was back acting as if he's just a reasonable guy who would never believe Rolling Stone for actual news.

Don't believe anything Mike says. He is a liar.
He really is.
It doesn't matter what you say or don't say; the answer is MASKS!
Clearly and visibly show your submission to the rulers, or DIE!!!
"It doesn’t matter what you say or don’t say"
You are correct about that. I'm just trying to use persuasion.
I don't have any power to force anyone to do anything, and I don't support Biden's OSHA mandate.
OSHA should have no jurisdiction. COVID is mostly dangerous to people who are too old or too unhealthy to work. The workplace risk is much lower than elsewhere.
Agree with you.
I'm with you on that. Making the vaccinated continue to wear masks removes an incentive to get vaccinated.
Yeah, it’s just dumb.
You got called out enough for your past positions you finally changed? But still want mandated vaccines. Good for you.
Mike,
what's your take on what is happening with Israel, Singapore, Gibraltar and other hi vax areas vs Sweden, Belarus and other low vax areas... seems counter-intuitive to your argument
I only know Israel. I’ve posted articles here before that explain how the apparent disparity makes sense, but will have to find again when I have more time than right this moment.
Hmm, things are always changing there. They are starting to give booster shots. Anyway, check out this recent news:
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/covid-in-israel-the-17-unvaccinated-make-up-60-of-deaths-this-week-1.10245471
“Israel's 17% unvaccinated account for 89% of ECMO patients
“And 65% of serious cases and 60% of deaths”
https://www.businessinsider.com/sweden-anders-tegnell-mask-lockdown-vaccine-covid-strategy-2021-9
“He [Sweden’s chief epidemiologist] also noted that "high vaccination level is the one way we can get out of this pandemic."
So, only counterintuitive if you only look into it superficially.
The modern conservative has no principles. Instead it is about "owning the libs". And to them, the longer it takes to defeat this pandemic, the more they "own" the libs. It's like salting the earth.
What the fuck happened to you? Just become a Democrat already. You've freely given up your freedoms for the appearances of safety. Keep acting like a scared child.
How can you look at risk by age and live in such fear? Are you one of those ewho believe half of all covid cases end in hospitalizations?
On top of that conservatives are saying to get vaccinated, if you want to. Trump, DeSantis. Hannity. Et al have said that you leftist fuck. They want choice. If you believe vaccines help, get the fuck vaccinated.
Your argument here is forced vaccination so fuck off. Or you're knowingly lying to cater the left. Which is it?
Choice? Choice is only for pregnant women.
What about pregnant men, you fucking transphobe? Don't they get choice, too?
And by the way it is fucking endemic now. See Isreal you stupid fuck. It has reservoirs in animals. Just saw a sign at the zoo that Prarie dogs can get the virus. You aren't defeating it with a non sanitizing vaccine dumbfuck.
What a leftist joke you've become. Your entire argument is to "own conservatives" and not based on science.
Can you point out a principled politician since....forever?
"He’s talking about it being ready, he’s going to talk about moving it quicker than the scientists think it should be moved … . People don’t believe that he’s telling the truth, therefore they’re not at all certain they’re going to take the vaccine. And one more thing: If and when the vaccine comes, it’s not likely to go through all the tests that need to be done, and the trials that are needed to be done." Joe Biden, noted conservative
Don't know how "Consult with your doctor" is "owning the libs", but c'est la vie.
Pandemics always take two to three years to run their course there is no one to blame for its continued infections its just happens it like breathing air you can't stop it you can slow it down but sometimes slowing it down actually lengthens the time it takes to run through a population which is what Australia will discover.
Nope. If many more people would have just gone out and gotten vaccinated, we could have put the brakes on the spread.
how many more people?
The vaccines became available about 10 months after the pandemic got going and really only became widely available 5 or 6 months ago (13-14 months in).
We spent most of the time since it broke out without a vaccine option.
Well this is completely wrong. Congrats.
Like Israel?
Or Iceland, or Gibraltar, or England, or ....
"Nope. If many more people would have just gone out and gotten vaccinated, we could have put the brakes on the spread."
According to who? Israel? Did Israel put the brakes on the spread?
Mike acts like he has a handle on the facts when he just makes shit up. Don't fall for it.
He belives this vaccine is just like every other vaccine. Afterall, they called it a vaccine. Why would they call it that if it didn't like the smallpox vaccine or MMR or DPT?
Facts not in place to prove that considering how well some non lock down nations are doing compared to lockdown nations and the total lock down nations like OZ will suffer while the rest of the world gets back to work
I am discussing vaccines specifically, and you are discussing locking down vs. not locking down. I find this a lot in arguments here: not distinguishing between the subjects of vaccination, masks, and lockdowns -- just pure emotional reaction where they are all conflated as the same thing.
You are lying about non vaccines specifically. They are prophylactics at this point. Nothing more.
India looks pretty decent right now at 13% vaccinated
At the cost of a huge number of Indians dying in their May spike. India would be doing even better, and have seen fewer deaths, if they could have done more vaccination.
Right now, all those unvaccinated people in India are a huge base for new mutations to arise in.
Wave that PANIC flag Mike! Actually, stuff it up your ass, stick first and sit on it, asshole.
Brandyshit is trying like hell to justify his adolescent stand for "both sides".
Asshole, we got what you deserved.
Lol. No it isnt. The virus acts seasonally just like all respiratory viruses. The states being hit now were the ones hit at this time last year.
Yep. It's how the 'seasonality theorists' keep predicting exactly what's going to happen next.
Hint: The winter wave crashes over the whole nation, starting in the midwest where the weather turns first.
Actually, I do believe in the efficacy of vaccination (to a point). But I don't believe it is the whole story. Why? Because the same institutions that have been lying and gaslighting (e.g. no natural immunity) for over a year are pushing the idea so hard in order to politicize this. COVID outbreak patterns have defied their supposed expectations and yet we still trust them for some objective truth. Pass.
Multiple medical professionals are now on video stating how they raise the covid fear to push politics.
Hypocrytic oath?
Thank you for acknowledging the efficacy of the COVID vaccines.
And here is white Mike lying again. Nobody is saying vaccines do nothing. They are saying they don't sanitize the virus. It will not ever stop covid from being around. But you're so political you make up your opponents arguments.
just like the flu and the cold its here to stay only it is weaker than before and may continue to weaken.
And in the meantime, putting unvaccinated people through miserable deaths on ventilators and clogging ICU units. All because partisan morons want to own the liberals by ... increasing their own risk of dying a miserable, lonely death on a ventilator.
Dude, stop it. There is no reason to believe that. Some people don't trust the vaccines for reasons that may be bad, but are still reasons beyond "own the libs". Most, I'd say have no particular problem with vaccination but see the mandates as something worth resisting. And the chance of a healthy person dying a miserable death on a ventilator is somewhere around the chances of dying from a lightning strike. You are talking about it as if infection while not vaccinated means you are likely to end up hospitalized. Which for the great majority of people simply isn't true.
White MIke is part of the group of uninformed leftists that truly believe if you get covid you have a high chance of ending up hospitalized. Fear has made him question freedoms.
"There is no reason to believe that."
You can bury your head in the sand, but the impact on hospitals is real: https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/coronavirus/article254482017.html
"Some people don’t trust the vaccines for reasons that may be bad, but are still reasons beyond 'own the libs'”.
I'm obviously talking about the people who _are_ refusing the vaccines for purely partisan political reasons. It's a dumb thing to do.
Here is Mike lying again. He did his google search to find the scare articles that meets his narrative, and forgot to- you know- read the article. For the benefit of the thread:
"St. Luke’s has not yet had to deny emergency, life-saving care to a patient because of a lack of resources,"
And reminder, there are fewer actual new cases than the "surge" in December. But Mike wasn't screaming about hospitals being overrun back then, because there wasn't a liberal talking point to be had.
Remember, in 4 weeks when the Hospitals have not been overrun, Mike will be on here acting as if he never suggested as much.
"And the chance of a healthy person dying a miserable death on a ventilator is somewhere around the chances of dying from a lightning strike. You are talking about it as if infection while not vaccinated means you are likely to end up hospitalized. Which for the great majority of people simply isn’t true."
And you can get vaccinated, and greatly reduce those odds even further with no downside. And help stop the virus from spreading in your community.
https://www.reddit.com/r/HermanCainAward/
With no downside, seems you are wrong about that too.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S221475002100161X#bib0020
Oh wow, Mike actually references Herman Cain as an example.
Herman Cain was dying of terminal cancer when he caught Covid. The flu or even a little cough could have offed him.
Overt isn't kidding about how dishonest you are.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone from getting vaccinated.
But I'm pretty sure there has never been any vaccine or medication without any downside. This kind of response is part of why some people don't trust it. If you tell people that there is totally no downside, and nothing could possibly go wrong and insult anyone who says otherwise, people are going to think that something funny is going on.
Mike isn't here to convince people, he is here to "own the cons". His conclusory statements aren't made based on his understanding of the data, but rather because he believes they will make the strawmen conservatives in his head look more foolish.
75% of eligible americans have vaccinated at this point. The vast majority of the remaining eligible americans are kids from 12 - 24 who have next to zero risk from COVID.
Mike doesn't care, because he wants to own cons, not actually figure out the appropriate next steps as a country.
"Overt isn’t kidding about how dishonest you are."
turdian in his dishonesty!
Given that we know ventilators are death sentences with this, any doctors putting patients on them should lose their licenses.
About 15% of covid deaths are form sepsis, of which ventilators are known to cause.
Critical/severe COVID-19 is sepsis. They're not easily distinguishable clinically, and are indistinguishable in the coding.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7886971/
People with Covid pneumonia and hypoxia are treated with other methods beginning with oxygen, prone positioning and then external ventilators. If all else fails then intubation and ventilation. This is a last ditch effort.
If your saturation level is dropping below 94% you are dying. Your brain and other organs cannot function below a certain point.
The myth that ventilators are bad came about because early on they were using higher pressure settings. They found that this was not working well. They now have specific settings for Covid pneumonia and try to postpone mechanical ventilation until there is no other choice.
There is also ECMO for very severe cases. This removes CO2 from the blood stream and gives it oxygen. People with severe Covid cannot get enough oxygen because their lungs are filling up. They are drowning in their own fluids.
so we have to lock down and remove freedoms for people for a small percentage of bad outcomes from a virus Mike?
You're not a libertarian.
Fat and old people are dying off. 18 months to flatten their tummies and the fatties still ignore the science.
And because we know white Mike will come back with an appeal to emotion about wanting to kill grandma...
The yearly death rate of those over 70 is around 10% a year prior to covid. The same death rate now is just a hair higher at 11%, die with covid for that group is 7%. It is not additive.
Who is trying to undermine confidence in the vaccines? You should always look for alternative explanations, or additional factors in a complex situation like this. Waves of infection came and went in pretty much the same way pre-vaccine. So it's pretty clear that there are other factors at play. I have no doubt that the vaccines are helping to improve things. But at this point it is also clear that they are not going to end this virus as something we have to deal with and that some people will get sick from.
"So it’s pretty clear that there are other factors at play."
Of course, there are. With real world problems, there are always more than one factor at play.
So what's with the stupid crap about "undermining confidence"? He's making legitimate observations and predictions based on the available evidence. Are we supposed to lie to people about the actual effectiveness and effects of the vaccines to increase confidence?
First of all, do you understand that all factors are not equal. By far, the most powerful factor we have for slowing the spread of the disease, decreasing the bad consequences of getting the disease, and slowing the rate of new mutations is vaccination.
Notice Mike doesn't answer the question. Because Mike isn't interested in a discussion. He just wants to parrot left wing nonsense, while claiming to be middle of the road. He is a gas lighting liar.
It's what he's paid for.
No, actually it's looking like seasonality and other factors are having a larger effect than vaccination. The currently winding down waves started after lots of people had been vaccinated. And they look very similar to waves from pre-vaccine times. I'm not saying the vaccines don't help decrease serious illness and reduce transmission. But they don't seem to be the only significant factor. or necessarily the most significant factor in the recent rises and falls of infection and hospitalization rates.
Between seasonality and vaccination which major factor is one we have control over?
No one is working so hard to undermine the confidence in vaccines as the democrats & their bureaucrat allies.
Fully vaccinated and they want me to wear masks and social distance for the rest of eternity anyway.
And show id when eating at a restaurant or purchasing groceries.
I had to show my vaccination card to play an outdoor softball game this summer.
Hint: just because conservative states have lower vaccination rates does not mean it is only conservatives who are not vaccinated.
But there is a sizable contingent in such states not getting vaccinated for partisan reasons, and that is just plain stupid.
Apologies to ENB if she already covered this thrilling victory for reproductive justice.
Woman with Down syndrome loses UK abortion law challenge
"LONDON (AP) — A woman with Down syndrome lost a court challenge against the British government Thursday over a law allowing the abortion up until birth of a fetus with the condition."
Abortion. Up. Until. Birth. Literally the ideal policy from a Koch / Reason / ENB perspective.
One of the greatest things about abortion access is that it allows us to exterminate genetic defectives who, let's be honest, are better off not existing. Hopefully within my lifetime there will come a point when I no longer have to breathe the same air as those barely human creatures.

Mother with Down Sydrome giving birth to a baby with Down Syndrome? One more Down Syndrome baby and then that will be enough.
Is Down Syndrome inheritable? I thought that it was overexpression of chromosome 21 genes. Basically a copying error, and that it wasn't transmissible to egg cells which are created by a slightly different method.
I know OBL is a parody and shouldn't be taken seriously, but honestly, this view is vile. It really does send the message to people with disabilities that their lives are worth less, and that they are not wanted in society. And in a country like the UK, with universal government health care, it basically just says that the state doesn't want to pay for their care and they would rather they just be exterminated in utero.
Yes, we all know that the worth of a human should be based on their political ideologies and social justice score.
Brown Syndrome is the act of enborting a baby with a preexisting condition.
Planned Parenthood was created with the objective of combating a different kind of Brown syndrome.

For those of you who missed it over the weekend, the Lancet Covid-19 Commission is disbanding because it was discovered that so many of the people on the panel were associated with the EcoHealth Alliance, the group that facilitated the financing at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. These are some of the same people who originally took the lead on investigating the origins of Covid-19--and assured us that the Covid-19 couldn't possibly have come from a lab.
Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University professor who has chaired a COVID-19 commission affiliated with The Lancet scientific journals, told The Wall Street Journal that he's disbanding a task force of scientists probing the coronavirus' origins. He reached the decision because the group was linked too closely with the New York-based non-profit EcoHealth Alliance, which has been scrutinized by scientists and lawmakers due to its use of U.S. funds to study bat coronaviruses with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
“Peter Daszak, who has been a vocal opponent of the theory that the virus escaped from a lab, led the task force until he recused himself in June. But Sachs thought it was better to end the whole thing since other members had also collaborated with Daszak on other projects, although one member told the Journal there was no conflict of interest.”

Everyone on the committee may have worked with the EcoHealth Alliance at one point or another. They were being asked to bite the hand that feeds them. The obvious needs to be said: Everyone on the Lancet Covid-19 Commission that had received funding from or worked on EcoHealth Alliance projects in the past knew it before this story broke. This is like a publicly traded company being trusted to audit its own books.
This Commission was always garbage, and letting them dictate the terms of public debate on social media and elsewhere was a ridiculous travesty. If there were a better way for them to undermine the public's confidence in the scientific community, I don't know what it would have been. There are no "scientific facts" without some measure of uncertainty attached to them in real time, and no one should ever believe anything just because an expert said so.
You had me a 'New York-based non-profit'.
How is it that all these "non-profits" always end up with billions of tax dollars?
Money is not fungible.
There are "good" dollars, given as grants to the favored of the rulers, and there are "bad" dollars, earned by hard work in the job of your own choosing.
And the magic of taxation can turn bad dollars into good dollars.
Each and every time that happens, it saves at least one child.
Or maybe kills one.
and multiply them, like Congress does with the national debt
Obama made it very obvious when he directed the DOJ to settle lawsuits by directing settlements to favored leftist political groups.
In Seattle they spend enough on homelessness to give every homeless person 50k a year. Most of that money ends up on liberal organizations instead.
Hey, where else are all those grievance studies grads gonna work?
In SF they spend 65K a year to put up a tent for a few homeless people. Even though they could rent an apartment for them for 35K a year.
P.S. This Dr. Jeffrey Sachs seems to be a go-to guy when progressives needs something. Not only was he the chair of the Lancet Covid-19 Commission but also Andrew Cuomo was apparently holing up in Sachs house, back when the press was looking everywhere for Cuomo.
He was also an orchestrator of Cuomo's Medicaid reorganization.

Sachs is also the director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University.
In this manner, "the facts" are carefully chosen. These are the people who make what progressives believe "the truth".
So, Sachs is to Medicine as Krugman is to Economics.

It is interesting how the opinions of a few people are so easily amplified in modern media.
I keep thinking back to the Rathergate papers back in 2004. Dan Rather puts some obvious forged papers out and within hours the story falls apart. Not by experts but by randos with blogs.
This is a key difference. Anyone could have busted open the rathergate case. That it happened to be one blogger who thought to recreate the memo with ms word, is a coincidence. That guy wasn’t a genius. He was just there at the right time with the right insight.
Today that creative destruction of the signal seems gone? Maybe? It sure feels like the “experts” are back manning the signal and existing media merely amplifies the signal and broadcasts it such that the randos no longer have the potential for making a run.
Face it. Humans are doomed to stupidity due to their desire to hear only what they already believe, and their worship of preferred authorities.
I think the journalists and the media used to get away with murder before the internet. We imagine their standards have deteriorated, but it used to be that there was no way to fact check them.
The other thing that kept them inline was that there were so few players before the internet in every local market, the news media was competing for both Democrat and Republican voters to watch. When you're broadcasting over the nation, or you're the only newspaper in town, you can't be too specialized (or "biased") without turning off half your viewers or readers.
Still, when the ability to fact check people on the internet came around, suddenly we could see that the emperor had no clothes. I think they made up for a lot of that stuff by relying on expert testimony for stories. You can't trust your reporters not to freelance with the truth, and everything they say or write will be diced by people in the general public. If they write a story about something an expert says, however, well, who can slice and dice that?
Remember all the fabrication by Jayson Blair back in 2003? He was just making shit up for The New York Times.
Remember Jay Forman's "monkey fishing" scandal?
"At first, Forman defended his first-person story—which described a trip he’d taken with a “monkeyfisherman” to Florida’s Lois Key—as completely true. In Forman’s piece, a monkeyfisherman casts a fruit-baited fish line from his boat onto the island where rhesus research monkeys were kept. A monkey perched in a tree takes the bait. Caught, the monkey is dragged down into the water.
The withering Times and the Journal investigations caused Forman to change his story. He now said that he had fabricated the lurid parts about monkeys being caught with baited lines, but maintained that he had visited the island and taunted the monkeys from offshore.
The scandal rested there until this week, when Forman telephoned me. Student journalists writing a story about the incident had contacted Forman, and this had prompted him to call me and confess that the story was a complete lie. He never even visited the island."

It's definitely muted, mostly by the vast majority of internet traffic going through a very small number of very large tech corporations that are now joined at the hip with the rest of the media establishment.
Wasn't some commenter at RedState who figured out that the documents were forged? Charles Johnson ended up getting the mainstream credit for it, but as I recall, he just reposted that gif which the commenter put up that showed the comparison between Word and the Rather copy.

• After tens of thousands of New York health care workers quit over the state's vaccine mandate, Gov. Kathy Hochul is considering declaring an emergency declaration that would deploy National Guard members trained in health care, said the state in a press release. It would "allow qualified health care professionals licensed in other states or countries, recent graduates, retired and formerly practicing health care professionals to practice in New York State."
First of all, at the risk of repeating myself, none of the currently available vaccines are FDA approved. All are still approved under an Emergency Use Authorization. Secondly according to FDA regulation, all Americans have an option to accept or refuse any drug approved under EUA. It appears that currently any vaccine mandate is illegal and unenforceable under federal law.
https://lc.org/newsroom/details/082721-fda-does-a-bait-and-switch-with-covid-shots
All existing Pfizer vials (in the hundreds of millions), remain under the federal Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) (meaning people have the “option to accept or refuse”);
The third or “booster” Pfizer shot is identical to the above and remains under the EUA with limited use to certain categories of people;
BioNTech received FDA approval for people ages 16 and above under the name Comirnaty, but there are no Comirnaty doses available in the United States;
In other words, there is currently NO FDA approved COVID-19 injection available anywhere in the United States. Every COVID shot in America remains under the EUA law and thus people have the “option to accept or refuse” them; and
Even when an FDA approved COVID shot becomes available, individuals are protected by federal law and many states laws from being forced to get these shots based on their sincere religious beliefs or conscience rights.
That means people must be told the risks and benefits, and they have the right to decline a medication that is not fully licensed. The federal Emergency Use Authorization law and the FDA, including the FDA Fact Sheet, state unequivocally that each person has the “option to accept or refuse” the shots. In addition to federal law, the FDA includes the Nuremberg Code and the Helsinki Declaration on its website, emphasizing the fact that people cannot be forced to take experimental drugs without their full consent.
From the link above.
It’s authorized. It’s not experimental. That is a right-wing canard.
What are the long-term health effects of the specific COVID-19 vaccines?
If the FDA fast tracks it then it's experimental and they're killing people, and if the FDA forces the vaccine to go through a typical trial they're dragging their feet and killing people.
Heads the right-wingers win, tails the FDA loses.
Your $.50 comments are becoming more and more obvious.
Based on everything that has occurred in the last 18 months, COVID is not an existential crisis. It just doesn't kill many otherwise healthy breeders.
If the vaccines turn out to have long term consequences, it could actually lead to an existential crisis. The idea that they are already vaccinating 12-18 year old kids who are still developing without long term studies pushes the bounds of sanity.
Untested vaccines, multi-trillion spending bills and abandonment of natural rights are all risking the future the U.S. for short-term gains. The Democrat agenda is a suicide pact.
Is there anything you don't judge through your hateful political lens?
judge through your hateful political lens
You have to be reading some seriously Marxist rags to even come up with that kind of nonsensical imagery. The fact that you think an honestly offered comment on well documented policies is hateful destroys any shred of credibility you may have had in claiming to be a libertarian.
Show me the long term studies for the effect of mRNA vaccines on human reproduction and growth. Or just explain why the vaccine producers required immunity from liability to put them into production.
Show me how spending $5 trillion in uncollected and unrealizable revenues does not jeopardize the solvency of a country.
Show me how the curtailing of speech, firearm bans and the increase in policing by federal agencies secures citizens against tyranny.
That is just from today's stories about the Democrat agenda.
The Democrat agenda is a suicide pact. Go ahead and prove me wrong.
Everyone else is the problem, not poor sarc. Today it's Chuck P. being hateful about sarc's trolling. But sarcasmic is just a helpless little lamb, weathering it all.
the FDA includes the Nuremberg Code and the Helsinki Declaration on its website, emphasizing the fact that people cannot be forced to take experimental drugs without their full consent.
That is the essence of what sarcumsac restated as if it were a right wing fallacy.
There is no solution to prevent douchebags from corrupting the conversations we need to be having except to call them out again and again. Moderate it and they just tone it down so it is less obvious. This is better than when they switch to the grooming behaviors of child predators.
San Diego announced that the jab will be mandatory for elementary school as soon as it is approved for 5 year olds. I suspect California to do the same.
Hey, another strawman from the usual leftists here. So far Brandy, White Mike, and Sarcasmic have all added to the bin.
It is not authorized. It may not be experimental depending on your definition, but it is NOT authorized and that is NOT a right-wing Canard. There is currently a federal lawsuit making its way through the court on this very subject.
The problem the FDA found itself in was this:
If they authorized the Pfizer vaccine, they would have to remove the EUA for the Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines, per their rules. But they didn't want to do that. So they "authorized" a Pfizer vaccine that is currently "not widely available". Their claim is that it is substantially the same (one uses high fructose corn syrup, the other uses cane sugar) but they are legally distinct. This allows them to sneak around the provision that would force them to remove the EUA for the Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines-- allowing them to keep operating under the EUA while claiming that the Pfizer has been authorized.
The whole purpose of this clever "bait and switch" (as one Federal lawsuit alleges) is to "instill confidence" in the vaccines without wiping the other two off the map-- which their rules dictate they do once one of the vaccines is approved... which technically it is not. Only a legally distinct version of the pfizer vaccine has been approved--- but is not yet widely available.
All of these vaccines may be perfectly safe. I'm not here to make those arguments, but you are being politically played.
And the booster shot controversy is the latest example of that. The real scientists stepped in and declared that booster shots were not necessary for the general population. Then the CDC overrode them.
Everything about this pandemic is a self-inflicted wound. Saying otherwise is a left wing canard.
It does nothing for confidence. I think it was more for political cover to push mandating it.
Isn’t the military exploiting this issue? From what I understand they tell US servicemen that the vaccine they are being forced to take is the FDA approved one, but in reality they are administering the ones under the emergency use.
“Only a legally distinct version of the pfizer vaccine has been approved— but is not yet widely available.”
That is precisely the heart of the right-wing lie. That is not how FDA approval works.
“That is precisely the heart of the right-wing lie. That is not how FDA approval works.”
What the fuck are you talking about? If it’s not true then why is the FDA being sued over this very thing in regards to the bait and switch? Do you assume everybody else is as stupid as you or is this intentional?
I think it is not about "boosting confidence". When the current administration got in, they began planning for a vaccination mandate. And this is all designed to be a Catch-22 way of mandating people take the EUA Vaccines, which would otherwise be against the law:
Plebe: I would like to work now.
US Gubm'nt: Not until you take the vaccine. We mandate it.
Plebe: But you can't mandate an EUA vaccine.
US: Correct, but we have mandated this one approved by FDA.
Plebe: Oh....well...I guess I need to eat, so I'll take that vaccine.
US: *Snort* Ahah, right. Good luck finding a dose of that.
Plebe: Wait, what now?
US: Yeah the FDA Approved vaccine isn't readily available. Anywhere.
Plebe: But I need a paycheck! And you assholes mandated I get a vaccine that isn't even fucking available!?
US: Well, the mandate doesn't apply if you have already taken one of the EUA Vaccines. You could just get that, and you can work.
Plebe: Wait, I can't work until I get the FDA Approved Vaccine.
US: Right.
Plebe: But I can't get the FDA Approved Vaccine.
US: Oh, hell no.
Plebe: But I can work if I have the EUA Vaccine. Doesn't that mean you are mandating the EUA Vaccine?
US: No, we are giving you a choice! No work until the Mandated Vaccine shows up, or CHOOSE to avoid the mandate with the EUA vaccine!
Plebe: That isn't a Choice at all, you fucker! The government is forcing me to get the EUA Vaccine or no work!
US: Hey now, Government is just the name for gaslighting mindfucks we do together, pal!
Also, the other two vaccines, being under the EUA because they are still technically in "phase three testing" would reasonably be called "experimental", at least in terms of legal definitions.
GG has this strange idea that BioNTech and Pfizer are two different vaccines. It is one vaccine developed jointly. It is also called and marketed as Pfizer - BioNTech. All of the applications and documents state this clearly. We tend to just call it Pfizer because that is a familiar name.
We also call the other one J&J because we know that name. It was actually developed by Janson which is a subdivision of J&J in Belgium.
They made a partnership when all of this started. BioNTech had been doing research on mRNA and Pfizer is a giant with huge manufacturing capability and a big Budget. So they jointly came out with this vaccine.
Oh and Moderna only recently submitted their final application to the FDA which can take at least a few months.
Laws only stand in the way of what the government wants to do when the people support the law, when the people support holding the officials in question accountable, and when the courts are willing to step in. If this is illegal, it's likely to be addressed retroactively, and I'm not sure the courts will be willing to step in if the government entity in question is claiming its some kind of emergency.

Herman Cain had terminal cancer when he died. A reoccurrence of the Stage IV colon cancer he had fought several years earlier. He had months left to live. A common cold would have finished him at that point.
So making a pseudo-Darwin award in his name is as dishonest as it is pathetic. Like most of the other deaths he died with Covid, not of it.

" It appears that currently any vaccine mandate is illegal and unenforceable under federal law."
So what has that got to do with anything?
By the time the challenges make it through the court system, the administration will have bought itself enough time to force people to get vaccinated.
"All in all, it's added up to a lot of confusion—even among doctors and health care workers—about who should get a COVID-19 booster vaccine and when"
The driving question isn't whom to believe or whether enjoying a higher protection from infection is beneficial. The question is whether the booster lowers the risk of hospitalization, and whether the taxpayers will being paying for it. I don't see those questions being asked or answered anywhere.
Even when two government panels tell us it isn't necessary, people should still be free to buy themselves a booster if they want one. And if two government panels tell us it isn't necessary, why shouldn't we be skeptical of making the taxpayers spring for it.
It wold be fun to see what happens to paranoid people who take daily boosters (on their own dime).
Don't give them any ideas. Soon they will require delivery by insulin pump to be considered "fully vaccinated."
Which is a non-existent set of people.
The risk of hospitalization is already exceedingly low for the vaccinated. From Moderna's data, it was around 0.02%. So reducing that risk further gains little compared to getting more people their first shot.
I agree.
Yes, but the hospitalization experience is truly horrible, and highly avoidable — so, why not get vaccinated, and while you are at it you are helping decrease the use of ICU beds and giving the virus one less host to possibly mutate within.
The virus is 100% effective at contracting COVID? Then why worry about unvaccinated?

Gabbard wasn't thrown out by the Dems. Rather, she chose to run for President in 2020 instead of running for reelection as a member of the House.
Although I though Gabbard was the best Democrat running for President (as she had the guts to criticize both Biden and Harris for their hypocrisies), Joe Biden was selected by the Democrat machine to run for President.

Nancy Pelosi agreed to give them that date--which was a major concession--and the date she gave them was August 27th, which is . . . um . . . today!
"Although the [nine Democrat] centrists didn’t secure an immediate vote on the infrastructure measure, they did pin down a Sept. 27 deadline for it, which means the House could vote on that bill weeks before the budget package is ready. Mrs. Pelosi has said previously that the House wouldn’t vote on infrastructure until the healthcare and education package has passed the Senate."
----Wall Street Journal, August 24, 2021
https://www.wsj.com/articles/house-democratic-leaders-move-to-get-centrists-on-board-ahead-of-key-vote-11629820709?
The reason the progressive wing of the party is threatening to vote against the infrastructure bill if it comes up first is because they expect the nine moderate Democrats to vote against the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill if it comes up first. So they're telling the moderates that they can't have the infrastructure bill if they don't vote for the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill first. The reason the nine moderate Democrats want to vote for the infrastructure bill first is because they want to vote against the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill.
Nancy Pelosi is doing the math. She can only lose three votes on the budget reconciliation bill, and if the nine moderate Democrats were planning to flip, they'd probably have done so over the weekend. In the meantime, if Nancy Pelosi betrays the moderate Democrats--and decides not to hold the vote on the infrastructure bill today--those nine Democrats are not only unlikely to put the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill over the top but also to oppose raising the debt ceiling, something that needs to happen (without any support from the Republicans) before October 1st anyway.
It's crunch time.
I won't be surprised if the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill passes, and I won't be surprised if it fails. If Pelosi fails to hold a vote on the infrastructure bill--which may have enough support from Republicans to make up for the progressives who will vote against it out of spite--I'd say that the chances of the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill is less likely to pass than it was yesterday. And we haven't even started talking about the Senate!
If the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill fails, expect a $1.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill to replace it--and that will pass. Total victory against that reconciliation bill probably isn't possible while the Democrats control the House, the Senate, and the White House. But forcing them to fight among themselves over cutting $2 trillion out of all that Green New Deal and socialist entitlement program spending will be cause for celebration.
And who knows what happens then? Is Pelosi sill Speaker after she screws the pooch on the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill? There won't be much time to get a revised bill passed, and the progressives will be even harder to corral under a lower number. Once we get past the holidays, the board will be reset with an orientation towards fund raising for the midterms in 2022--and the odds of moderate Democrats sticking their necks out for socialism and climate change are even lower in an election year.

August[September] 27th, which is . . . um . . . today!"----Ken Shultz
Fixed!
Biden has almost certainly already promised the moderate House Democrats high profile and high paying jobs in the Biden/Harris administration (if they vote with Pelosi) after they lose their reelections next year.
And Biden has almost certainly offered Manchin and Sinema tens of billions of additional federal dollars for WV and AZ if they vote for Pelosi's >$5 trillion reconciliation bill (that the Dems are claiming is $3.5 trillion, and Biden just claimed would cost nothing).
I'm aware that's likely. I'm also aware that Trump offered Susan Collins and Murkowski whatever they wanted to vote for the repeal of ObamaCare.
I'm also aware that Joe Biden had seven months to evacuate Americans from Kabul but didn't bother to really get started until the Taliban had surrounded the airport.
I will not be surprised if the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill is passed.
I won't be surprised if the Biden administration turns out to be woefully incompetent at handling more than just Afghanistan, vaccine mandates, and Haitian refugees either. They can't seem to do anything right!
Rasmussen has Biden's approval rating at just 40% now.
https://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/biden_administration/biden_approval_index_history
Biden's political capital may have spent on Afghanistan, vaccine mandates, and Haiti. I'm not sure Manchin, Sinema, and the nine House Democrats are willing to sell their political careers short to hitch their wagon to Biden's reelection chances in 2024. And if Biden and Pelosi had the votes for the budget reconciliation bill, they'd have the vote scheduled already.
Yes, there is a case to make that the bill will pass, but there's a case to make that it won't, too. I've seen easier slam dunks miss over the last five years.
P.S. Whatever promises Pelosi is making, they're muted because she's already promised to step down as Speaker after 2022.
It isn't just that the Democrats almost certainly won't still control the House after the midterms. It's also that Pelosi won't be there to help the moderates when they're in the minority. And, yeah, the Biden gig is likely to be short term. These moderates survived as Democrats in red and purple districts despite a huge turn out for Trump and a 14 seat gain by the Republicans. I'd be reluctant to assume my career is over under those circumstances and sell it short for an appointment by Biden.
Jared Golden (D), representative for Maine CD 2, a marine who was deployed to Afghanistan, serving in a district that voted for Trump in 2020, who voted against Biden’s COVID relief package, is unlikely to carry the water for Pelosi on this.
As Maine goes, so goes the nation.
It's also beyond red/blue in certain places. I'm betting Pelosi is hearing this from the NY delegation as well, among others.
https://www.northjersey.com/story/news/bergen/englewood/2021/09/17/new-jersey-representatives-bill-pascrell-salt-cap-repeal-budget/8385383002/
I mean, when you have trouble getting Bill Pascrell and Tom fucking Malinowski on board, it's not just those dastardly Third-Wayers that you have problems with.
One of the Democrats voted against letting it out of committee yesterday:
"Moderate Democrat Rep. Scott Peters of California joined all 16 Republicans on the Budget committee in opposing the legislation. His objections included one that troubles many Democrats: a reluctance to back a bill with provisions that would later be dropped by the Senate.
Many Democrats don’t want to become politically vulnerable by backing language that might be controversial back home, only to see it not become law."
https://floridapolitics.com/archives/460445-budget-panel-oks-democrats-3-5t-bill-crunch-time-for-joe-biden-agenda/
Scott Peters is not one of the nine moderate Democrats we've been talking about!
He is a moderate from San Diego, but he isn't one of the nine who wrote the letter to Pelosi and demanded the infrastructure bill be put up for a vote first.
This is not a good sign if you're trying to get that passed. I'm just reading the tea leaves here, but I don't think there's a good reason to lose all hope yet.
The Dems don't have the votes for the 3.5 trillion dollar national debt disaster bill. They do have the votes for the 1.2 trillion dollar porkbarrel bill. Pelosi is smart enough to not risk the 1.2 trillion for a bill that won't pass.
The 1.2 trillion "infrastructure" bill will pass, then Dems will whittle down the 3.5 trillion reconstitutionalization bill a bit (probably to 2.5 trillion or so) and call it a day.
The differences between the bills aren't just a matter of pork.
It really does matter what you spend the money on, and creating whole new entitlements and instituting the Green New Deal is a whole lot worse than pork projects.
Because they're both bad things, spending money on pork and expanding socialism are not the same thing, nor are they just as bad as each other.
Manchin isn't as bad as Lenin. Manchin wants you to pay for bridges and highways in West Virginia. Lenin wants to abolish private property and make everyone dependent on a socialist government. The infrastructure bill is more like Manchin. The $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill is more like Lenin.
Taking what Biden has to offer in exchange for their congressional seat is a bad deal. Biden and co are on track to lose BIGLY in 2022 and 2024, so any job he can offer them is a two-year gig at best.
"Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians"
Ah both sides again, sure. In fact the 20th century was just all left wing dictators with small differences.
It turns out the neocons were Trotskyites all along.
Look at the linked article, and you'll see it's not a matter of merely both sides, but a great profusion of sides, as various tendencies are labeled "authoritarian" but are orthogonal to each other. Sometimes "authoritarian" means "uncompromising", sometimes "opposing red tape", sometimes "opinionated", sometimes "violent", sometimes "true-believing", and once in a while even reflects what we would call authoritarian. Plus a few miscellaneous meanings.
"a scientific close call"
WTF is that? We're just making up terms now? Or are we simply substituting the word 'scientific' because it sounds better than 'political'?
Political science majors approve.

It was sad to read that Phil Collins says he can no longer play drums. He had a back injury and health issues.
I did see that his son will be taking his place with Genesis which is cool.
I don't know what to do about the Genesis tour I haven't missed one since 1983 but they're not coming anywhere near Dallas and phish & DeadandCo. are still touring into the fall and now TOOL announced today so TOOL ...
On Friday, Biden said:
Imagine being the kind of person who cares and heeds what this guy says about the vaccine.
LOL
Life expectancy in the US dropped by 2.2 years for men and a bit under 2 years for women in 2020. Compared to one year in most other countries and roughly no change in most of the Nordic countries.
Apples and oranges. Have Europe measure infant mortality as we do and their average drops. A lot.
Completely irrelevant. The 2.2 years (and the changes for other countries) is a year-over-year change in life expectancy in 2020. There was no change in infant mortality measures from 2019 to 2020.
Further - you're full of shit as well because if you want you can drill down through the data and pick whatever age you want as the life expectancy measure (eg life expectancy at birth, life expectancy at age 50, etc). You will notice almost the identical discrepancy regardless of age - because covid had similar/identical effects on all people in all countries - same age vulnerabilities, same co-morbidities, etc.
What's this... 2018 showed a decrease. So did 2015/2016?? Who knew Covid was around for so many years!
https://www.mcknightsseniorliving.com/home/news/life-expectancy-decreasing-cdc-says/
What's this?!?
https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2021/20210714.htm
Oh noes, there is other reasons like an increase in overdoses?!?
if you want you can drill down through the data and pick whatever age you want as the life expectancy measure (eg life expectancy at birth, life expectancy at age 50, etc).
Also, a pretty weird take given the number of children under 18 that have died from Covid being less than a normal flu season. But I'm sure you just mispoke.
because covid had similar/identical effects on all people in all countries – same age vulnerabilities, same co-morbidities, etc.
It had identical effects in all countries, but life expectancy in the U.S. fell more than double the average. Something is squiffy about your logic there.
No it isn't.
1. One of the co-morbidities is clearly obesity/diabetes - and we are that (at all ages).
2. Since the biggest % increase in mortality rate was actually among working age, that demographic was exposed more to the virus before the vaccine (which is irrelevant everywhere anyway for 2020)
3. It's likely that we are younger (compared to those countries listed) and every death at younger age has much much more impact on life expectancy than an older death.
The combo - fatter at younger ages and more exposed at younger ages would be the biggest difference.
Wonder how lockdowns preventing kids from doing, well, damned near anything factor in to this.
The virus hardly affects the young. Overdose and suicide from depression caused by isolation on the other hand...
Death with COVID, or death from COVID? Death with fentanyl, or death from fentanyl? Death with auto-asphyxiation or death from auto-asphyxiation. So many choices on those reports. And the U.S. being the only country that provides a bounty for only one of those choices.
Are you saying someone is actively killing people who would not otherwise die merely in order to collect a bounty on attributing a cause of death as covid (rather than - in all those cases - homicide)?
By all means, accuse me of making the most ludicrous argument possible. And why would any of those deaths be a homicide?
Meanwhile, it has been well known for most of the pandemic that Medicare has made extra payments for COVID treatment. But please, continue to pretend nobody has pointed this out to you previously.
"Right now Medicare has determined that if you have a COVID-19 admission to the hospital, you’ll get paid $13,000. If that COVID-19 patient goes on a ventilator, you get $39,000, three times as much."
The figures cited by Jensen generally square with estimated Medicare payments for COVID-19 hospitalizations, based on average Medicare payments for patients with similar diagnoses. https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/hospital-payments-and-the-covid-19-death-count/
So what. Mortality rate is based on the number of people who died. Not what is written on the death certificate as the cause. Life expectancy dropped by 2.2 years in 2020 even if every cause of death was 'suffocated in a tub of jello'
The only demographic with lower mortality rate in 2020 compared to 2019 was under 18's. Meaning the home isolation which reduced accidents, etc more than offset covid. Put another way though - we overprotected kids if the particulars of how that happened increased mortality rate among (mainly) 40-64's (the demo w the highest % increase in mortality rate)
And mathematically impossible. Life expectancy can't drop by 2.2 years in 1 year.
It can if it is only a model based on the data and not an actual analysis of the data.
That's just silly.
First, life expectancy models are how life insurance has been priced for a couple centuries. Not some fly by night covid creation.
Second, this is mixing two different things. To use the morbid extreme - life expectancy of Jews/Poles/Roma/etc in Europe (regardless of age) fell by a lot more than one year in 1942 - and it wasn't because of a faulty or impossible life expectancy model.
it wasn’t because of a faulty or impossible life expectancy model.
Yeah, it was because of an act of war. The kind of thing an insurance company would never take into account.
The same as an additional complicating factor for people who are already at high risk because of being morbidly obese or having high blood pressure or diabetes. COVID makes the already bad risks worse and does little for the low risk.
It might actually have affected rates for short term disability, though. If they didn't find a way to exclude it.
It's almost like improved access to medical care isn't improved medical care.
and a lot of the drop is from the lockdowns, and not the pandemic
Murders up 30% in 2020:
https://www.npr.org/2021/09/27/1040904770/fbi-data-murder-increase-2020
Car accident fatalities up 8% in 2020, despite 13% fewer miles traveled:
https://www.vox.com/22675358/us-car-deaths-year-traffic-covid-pandemic
People driving faster with less traffic congestion, more people driving intoxicated due to working from home or not working, more people driving outside of the rush-hour commuting routes they know well.
36% of adults deferred needed medical care over COVID concerns:
https://www.urban.org/sites/default/files/publication/103651/delayed-and-forgone-health-care-for-nonelderly-adults-during-the-covid-19-pandemic_1.pdf
Drug overdose deaths up 32% in 2020:
https://www.commonwealthfund.org/blog/2021/drug-overdose-toll-2020-and-near-term-actions-addressing-it
Yeah. Pedestrian fatalities were also up a ton - even with traffic down a ton.
None of that matters much. Covid accounts for 80-90% of excess deaths. You can't ignore it away no matter how much you want to ignore it away.
Depends on how you count it. Are deferred medical care deaths due to the COVID scaremongering in the media due to COVID? Or due to the panic? There are many factors leading to reduced life expectancy, and most of them went up last year, as many of us predicted due to job losses and forced isolation. Are those due to COVID? Or due to the overreacting lockdown orders? See above links.
And the life expectancy numbers are going to take another hit from the increased obesity due to the lockdown orders:
https://nypost.com/2021/09/17/childrens-bmi-doubled-during-pandemic-shocking-cdc-study/
"The rate of change among obese children during the eight-month study was 5.3 times higher during the pandemic, suggesting weight gain. On average, these kids gained between 1.0 and 1.2 pounds per month, the CDC said."
You can add up anything you want. Including now the number of people who are dying because they can't get into hospital because the ICU's are full of unvax covid patients clogging up ICU.
The FACT is that all of that stuff is either:
1. comparable in its causes/effects to other countries in which case any increased mortality here is similar to what is happening elsewhere and is thus not an explanation of why we were 2.2 years here and 1 year elsewhere.
2. unique in its causes/effects to the US in which case any increased mortality here here is unique and thus is an explanation of why we are unique and special in reducing life expectancy.
Including now the number of people who are dying because they can’t get into hospital because the ICU’s are full of unvax covid patients clogging up ICU.
Oh, you jeffys and your unsubstantiated claims. Please call everyone who disagrees with you a conspiracy theorist next. It makes me chuckle.

I did some digging. It appears Donald Trump happened.
He seems pretty tough to like from what I've read smug, and a lawyer that uses past credentials to push opinion as fact.
"Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians, including a 'preference for social uniformity, prejudice towards different others, willingness to wield group authority to coerce behavior,
Intriguingly!
Intriguingly, I was going to post the same thing.
I'm sure the researchers who published their article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology were shocked (SHOCKED!) to find that there was even such a thing as left-wing authoritarianism.
And stunned!
How could a group that considers our input and agrees with us have authoritarians?
shocking!
"Why did you need four wardens? Why did you need three vehicles to surround my house, when I have one possum who is not doing anything wrong?" said Alabama boudoir photographer Matt Mathews after the state took Donovan, his opossum.
I take it this story is interesting because it crosses over with sex-work?
In graph above can some explain to me what I'm reading wrong it looks like deaths without vaccination is .9 per 100k with is .3 so about .5 persons correct per 100k it could save? So about 1 person every 200k and about 1900 for 330 million people? If I read that right is that worth mandates and everything else that happened? If I didn't read that right what part did I miss in that twitter graph? Is that per day or what? If I did read it right why is that graph supposed to be stupendous news when it looks like barely a blip?
And that translates across the graphs in all dimensions as well. The peak of the infections graph is ~70 per 100,000 for a weekly moving average of the "unvaccinated". At that rate, held constant, we'd only have ~4400 yrs. to head off the virus before everyone in the US was infected. Arguments about the time being shortened due to exponentaition are refuted by the fact that we aren't near t0 and the peaking seen in the graph.
Two weeks to flatten the curve of 5 hospitalizations per 100,000 to what, 0?
Besides the graph shown above, there is an entire thread of posts with more graphs and commentary if you follow the Twitter link. The most important takeaway is that hospitalization is worse in states with low vaccination rates.
ROFLMAO! Groups in the second graph:
40-45%
46-50%
50-55%
56-50%
That's a fail in a 100-level statistics course.
Sorry, second line graph, third graph.
“The most important takeaway is that hospitalization is worse in states with low vaccination rates.”
Nobody cares. The most important takeaway is we live in a free society and people are free to choose what goes into their bodies. You’ve been vaccinated so you’re at statistically no risk of death(according to you). You are shit on so much because you repeat yourself endlessly with misinformation and ignorance, then when talking points change and facts emerge, you pretend to have never said those things. That’s why Overt is hilariously pointing out how smooth your brain is by reposting your Own Goal posts.
sorry but that is an entirely UNimportant takeaway for the communists like Mike
Yes that is per day
Untested vaccines, multi-trillion spending bills and abandonment of natural rights are all risking the future the U.S. for short-term gains. The Democrat agenda is a suicide pact.
The fully vaccinated are at the lowest risk of getting COVID, and even lower risk of getting severe COVID (hospitalization or death). The vaccine doses should be going to the unvaccinated.
I don't know about where you live. But where I am, there are signs in front of all the grocery stores and drug stores saying, "Walk in vaccinations. No appointment necessary." Any unvaccinated person can drop in and get vaccinated anytime.
yeah, in the USA. Many third world countries have < 20% vaccinated and no doses available.
I'll donate my booster shots to them.
They should have paid more.
>>The vaccine doses should be going to the unvaccinated.
who's left who wants it?
Nobody. They just want a paycheck.
My wife worked the vaccine clinic this weekend. So desperate for customers, she got a booster shot.
Oh I probably will get a booster at some point but not in a hurry. Actually I want a flu shot first and planning to do that at the next opportunity.
there's still the flu?
Nope. Covid cured the flu.
Pretty much all of Africa. The WHO is mad at all these high income countries for deploying boosters to low risk populations while 80 year olds still can't get their first dose in low income countries.
Might be the first time I have agreed with the WHO in a long time. Personally, I'd have taken it further and been pissed at high income countries for forcing their 18 year olds to get vaccinated while the immunocompromised in low income countries who are desperate to get it, can't. If the whole mandate discussion had been put off until there was sufficient vaccine globally, I wonder if things would have gone a bit more smoothly. There was hardly any time between when people first COULD get a vaccine to when they were being PUSHED/FORCED to get it. If there was a year for people to get comfortable, I wonder if people would be more likely to treat this like a flu, measles, polio, etc. vaccine. Kids are required to have all sorts of shots to go to public school, health workers have been required to have flu vaccines, and travelers used to be required to carry a vaccine passport for yellow fever to travel to certain countries. It hasn't been a big deal, like the COVID vaccine is turning out to be.
“Intriguingly, the researchers found some common traits between left-wing and right-wing authoritarians, including a ‘preference for social uniformity, prejudice towards different others, willingness to wield group authority to coerce behavior
Each of these behaviors is anathema to right wing ideas. Individualism, the basis for right wing thought, does not allow for coercive uniformity, coercive bigotry, or coercive group behavior modification.
But all of these things are goal items on the left--provided they are cloaked prettily enough-- Diversity for coercive uniformity of thought, Inclusion for coercive bigotry, and Equity for coercive group behavior modification.
'Right wing' is not in any way meaningful except in comparison to 'left wing'. It originally described where the monarchists sat in the right wing of the French parliament while it was in session. It has never been associated with monarchists in the U.S. Those who identify with it do so because it demonstrates their opposition to socialism and socialist policies.
'Left wing', however, is fraught with meaning. It was where the Jacobins sat in the French parliament. You know, those guys who started a revolution, guillotined their own leaders, and turned the country over to an absolute dictator to sort it out. The Jacobins and their intellectual heirs were all about socialism, big into Karl Marx, and have never changed in anything but name. They cheered on the Soviet and Chinese revolutions, completely ignoring the subsequent usurpation of those governments by strong men, and have worked tirelessly for over a century to bring same form of big 'S' Socialism to the U.S.
I see no problem referring to Democrats as left wing or lefties. There is no centrist component that I can see anymore in the Democrat party. They have fully accepted Sanders and Occasio-Cortez as legitimate members and no longer consider them the fringe left. Why should the public differentiate if they won't?
Mancin and Sinema and Gabbard? (Public enemies Nos. 1, 2, and 3?)
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
The Sanders crowd is just selling the old social Democrat ideology. Most of the democrats are just grifters following the Tammany Hall playbook and paying off their supporters.
The Buckley Reagan conservatives, neoliberals originally are long gone. Replaced by populist nationalists who are purely reactive. There is no real intellectual ideology there.
I don’t consider left vs right to be a useful measure of anything. The libertarian vs authoritarian divide is still legitimate but we are clearly losing that battle.
I don’t consider left vs right to be a useful measure of anything.
And I concur. But the Democrat party's commitment to bring big 'S' socialism to the U.S. is definitely deserving of the comparisons to the Jacobins. Considering that maybe 5% of adults would correctly associate 'Jacobin' with 'head chopping fanatics that enabled Napoleon's rise to power', I will settle for 'lefty' as an ode to the lost history.
Fun fact: the Jacobins attempted to arrest the Marquis de LaFayette, hero of the American revolution and champion of individual rights. And that was after he quelled the riots in Paris without massive bloodshed.
Satel's piece in itself is a demonstration of the very bias that kept and continues to keep left leaning types from recognizing the tendency toward authoritarianism they harbor. Add that to the goofy formula of the new questions for the LWA schema, many of which also apply to the right, but are largely emotion-based, it appears, and the bias runs deep.
Quote of the Day:
"Every element of my economic plan is overwhelmingly popular — overwhelmingly popular.
But the problem is, with everything happening, not everybody knows what’s in that plan."
----Joe Biden
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2021/09/24/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-covid-19-response-and-the-vaccination-program-8/
I think he really believes this, but how does he know his plan is overwhelmingly popular if people don't know what's in his plan?
For starters, he lying, which is what he does, as evidenced by 47+ years of a sub-mediocre career. He may well believe his own bs, but this doesn't change that what he said is not true.
He decided it was popular before he started worrying about details--like what the plan is.
If you'd just stopped at the first sentence, I'd have put money on the idea that Trump said it.
Of course, Biden turns the TDS up to 11.
But there are no MEAN TWEETS!!!! How can there be confusion?????
There can be no confusion. All the information is not misinformation!
If you are referring to Trump he did confusing and confused tweets, in addition to mean ones.
Update!
"The House will vote Thursday on the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill, pushing back an originally planned vote for Monday that Democratic moderates had demanded as part of a deal with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Lawmakers will still debate the bill on the House floor on Monday, but the actual vote will be pushed to Sept. 30, when some surface transportation programs are set to expire, Pelosi announced in a Sunday night missive to Democrats."
----The Hill
https://thehill.com/homenews/house/574030-pelosi-sets-thursday-for-vote-on-infrastructure-bill
I'm not sure what this does to the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill, but Pelosi has officially reneged on her promise to hold the vote today on the infrastructure bill.
Preliminarily, it looks like she's backstopping the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill. She's probably including the provision to raise the debt ceiling in the $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill, and then telling the moderate Democrats if they don't back the bill, then then U.S. will default on its debts, social security recipients will go hungry, disabled veterans will go without electricity, etc.
When Cortez landed with his men on the mainland to conquer the Aztecs, the first thing he did was order his men to scuttle the ships. He burned them! That way, mutiny and sailing back to the Spanish colonies or Spain was no longer one of the options. They couldn't build new ships without his leadership. The only way home was conquering the Aztecs first, and the only alternative to doing this his way was death in the New World.
That's what Pelosi is doing to the moderates. She's going for broke. Let's hope she loses.
Let's pray they can't make a deal, the government shuts down, and they fail to make payments.
Acceleration FTW
Now we need a law that furloughed workers never get paid.
I don't think it is quite that dire, yet. The moderates seem to be okay with the delay to Thursday. The biggest problem is that the progressives will have to blink on getting their $3.5T plan through first, or the Republicans will have to come on board. Really not sure what happens if the vote happens on Thursday and it gets voted down. The moderates will be PISSED and have a lot more to fear from the Republicans in their district than AOC raising a primary challenge.
You're writing an article about the confusion yet added to it yourself.
"But Walensky stepped in and contradicted the CDC panel's recommendation. Per her advice, those with high-risk jobs or living situations should get a booster."
No. Only people 65+, in long-term care faciliaties, or 50-64 "should" get a booster. 18-49 with underlying health issues, or 18-64 in high risk jobs, *may* get a booster based on individual assessment of risk.
