Brickbat: Bad Medicine

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which licenses doctors, has opened an investigation of Dr. Jeremy Henrichs because he has questioned the value of mask mandates in schools. Henrichs is also a member of the Mahomet-Seymour school board, and his lawyer said this is an effort to intimidate him into backing Gov. Jay Pritzker's mask mandate. "What the medical disciplinary board wants to know is if the doctor will support and enforce the mask mandate by the governor," the state investigator handling the case wrote to the lawyer. As a school board member, Henrichs voted earlier this year for a mask optional policy that would impose a mandate if local infections began to rise. That was in line with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advice at the time. Pritzker later imposed a mask mandate on all schools in the state.

The doctor's position must be extra infuriating to the Holy Church Of The Sacred Face Diaper; the fact that he's a doctor takes away their favorite argument. It comes across as rather ludicrous for someone with a bachelor's degree in Womyn's Studies to claim "he is just an uneducated troglodyte who doesn't understand the science like us educated people do!"

My experience lately has been that most people who claim to "follow the science" are doing it in the same way ancient Greeks or Romans followed the will of the gods. They have no ability to talk to the gods themselves, so they rely on the high priest to tell them what the gods want them to do.

When someone else claims to have looked at the data and reached their own conclusion, well they are obviously lying because its impossible for lay person (a non-priest) to commune with The Science. To claim otherwise is blasphemy.

When you have someone who is a priest (a doctor or other scientist) who claims The Science says something differently than the high priest, this is clearly the start of a heretical sect. He's a false prophet, a herald of the Antiscience, and must be stopped at all costs

Science is not a set of official facts. Science is a process. As such, science does not offer policy positions, nor even policy guidelines, or guidelines of any sort.

Policy can be informed by science but science is not policy.

It's not even a very well defined process. Multiple processes that work together, several of which indicate that "If this process doesn't work, use another." and "If no process works, invent one." Peer review was never a part of any scientific method I learned... or it was implied, potentially with further the implication that all humans constitute peers.

“Be of good character,” is a common licensing requirement.

That lets them suspend licenses, or not grant licenses, to people who engage in anything from murder to wrongthink.

Licensing is, by its very nature, subject to the whims of the state.

As such, licensing is very much a brickbat.
