Ex-Governor Cuomo Has His Emmy Unjustly Revoked
Andrew Cuomo was a very bad governor. His ability to convince people otherwise during his pandemic press briefings is surely a performance deserving of an Emmy.

Andrew Cuomo officially resigned as governor of New York yesterday in response to a damning report by the state's attorney general that detailed 11 women's sexual harassment allegations against him. As a final indignity, the ex-governor has also been stripped of his Emmy.
"The International Academy announced today that in light of the New York Attorney General's report, and Andrew Cuomo's subsequent resignation as Governor, it is rescinding his special 2020 International Emmy Award," said the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in a statement today.
The organization had previously given Cuomo its Founders award back in November 2020. That honor, per the Academy's website, is reserved for people who have "crossed cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity." Past recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Al Gore, and Steven Spielberg.
Cuomo certainly did his share of crossing boundaries while in office. Yet it was his commanding performance at COVID-era press conferences during the early months of the pandemic that ultimately netted him the Emmy.
"The Governor's 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure," said International Academy President Bruce L. Paisner in November. "People around the world tuned in to find out what was going on, and New York tough became a symbol of the determination to fight back."
Given the serious allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation made against Cuomo, it's completely reasonable that the Academy would want to distance itself from the disgraced former governor. The Associated Press notes that the organization reversed its decision to give a Founders award to Kevin Spacey after the actor was accused of sexual misconduct.
Nevertheless, if the goal of the Academy was to honor Cuomo for an Emmy-caliber performance, the latest revelations about his conduct make him no less deserving of its award.
Cuomo's masterful handling of his daily COVID briefings made him a darling of both mainstream media and New York voters. Opinion polls showed close to 80 percent of state voters had a favorable opinion of him.
He managed to pull those numbers despite his objectively scandalous handling of New York's response to the pandemic. It was under Cuomo that the state issued guidance requiring nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients being discharged from hospitals without proper testing and isolation protocols in place to prevent spread, resulting in potentially thousands of excess nursing home deaths.
Some 15,000 nursing home residents ultimately died in New York, the most of any state, and a fact that Cuomo and his administration spent a good deal of time trying to conceal from the public. (The governor issued similar guidance for residential facilities for adults with disabilities.)
The nursing home scandal and cover-up alone should have been enough to prompt the governor's resignation. Instead, Cuomo effectively used his daily press conferences to claim that the state's nursing home deaths were tragically unavoidable and that New York had actually done a better job than most states at preventing them.
When reporters pressed him on this issue, the governor dismissed their questions as partisan attacks.
That Cuomo was able to convince the vast majority of his state that he was an effective executive when disaster was unfolding all around him speaks to his skill as a performer.
Over time more evidence of his maladministration and misdeeds have come to light, from getting his family special access to COVID tests during the early days of the pandemic to running the worst rent relief program in the country.
These other scandals are more evidence that Cuomo's one true skill is his acting ability. He wasn't a good governor, he just played one on TV.

Kudos for the level of snark, Britschgi! Perfectly appropriate for how surreally awful the Cuomo pandering was last year.
I concur.
Christian Britschgi awarded Mark Twain Prize for humor/truth in journalism.
So it can be indignantly rescinded when he makes a PC slip?

Ok, so the Emmy Award category is for the performance of a truly sleazy politician and his ability to lie and deceive. Ok, got it.
By the way, did anyone else hear that the asshole just abandoned his dog when he departed the governors mansion?
Yeah, I saw that this morning. He tried to give it to an aid but they returned it because it was an asshole much like its owner. Evidently it likes to bite people. Which reminds me, will the Academy be taking back Marv Albert's emmys?
He paid to gnaw on them hoes. No foul!
"The Governor's 111 daily briefings worked so well because he effectively created television shows, with characters, plot lines, and stories of success and failure,"
Should have opened them the the "Friends" theme.
Good Times maybe more appropriate.

How much of it was actually Cuomo, and how much of it was TDS-afflicted people believing what they wanted to believe? I don't have to be convincing to get people to believe a brazen lie, I just have to make sure it conforms to what some people already accept.
How much of it was actually Cuomo, and how much of it was TDS-afflicted people believing what they wanted to believe?
^ This. These were largely the same people who believed Jussie Smollet's blindingly obvious bullshit and thought Machael "Creepy Porn Lawyer" Avenatti was a, like, totally awesome dude who was going to bring Trump down and save democracy. It's like when you hear some cult leader being described as "incredibly charismatic" and possessing Svengali-like powers, only to find out he was just another manipulative asshole who appealed to exceptionally weak-minded rubes who desperately wanted to believe what they were being told.
The same religious zealots who refer to Handsy Joe of the most adult and ethical administration in history as 'so presidential,' while sneering at the authoritarian cultists that make up the Trump voters and GOP? Couldn't be.
"Smollet, Avenatti, Cuomo"
Isn't it amazing how all these guys who's sensibilities were offended by Trump, turned out to be even cruder and more unethical than they accused Trump of being.
It's fascinating to me how uncritical and slavishly devoted to those people the media whores, including Reason staff, were to such obvious BS. One minute of critical thought about any of those narratives and they exploded like a bomb-maker with Parkinson's. Just shameful how much they've turned into propaganda proponents.
"...exploded like a bomb-maker with Parkinson’s"
I'm using that.
That's been my theory all along, that these covid lockdowns, masking, and social distancing were a Hail Mary which worked a whole lot better than its proponents expected. They were simply tired of Teflon Trump being untouchable; every insult just strengthened his appeal to the Trumpettes. It's the same reason Hillary boosted Trump over the other GOP primary candidates; she didn't understand Trump was popular precisely because he was not an ordinary politician.
And once they had tried lockdowns in desperation, I don't think anyone was as surprised as they were on how well they worked and people put up with them, so of course they've held on and keep pushing them; why mess with success?
Cuomo was destroyed by the mob. The mob is us. I didn't like him. He had his faults, but none of them were so egregious that he should be destroyed. THE POLITICS OF PERSONAL DESTRUCTION ARE RAGING COAST TO COAST. We are in the grip of a mass psychosis.
Shipping Covid patients into a closed environment full of the only people really susceptible to the bug, is pretty fucking Evil, dude. The guy is a thorough scumbag. Fuck him, and send him to the prison wing that Illinois ships their ex-Governors off to.
No. The "mob" doesn't have impeachment power like the Statehouse did with bipartisan impeachment coming. The "mob" does not have the investagative power that the state IG has.
He didn't just say something that offended some Karen, he wasn't "cancelled". He was (and may still be) facing civil lawsuits as well as possible state and federal criminal charges.
Much of it was the media. The news outlets were fully aware of his nursing home massacre but they chose to pretend he was the type of successful leader that was everything Trump couldnt be. Cuomo was no great performer. It was essentially stuff like his brother's gimmicky CNN show and Jennifer Rubin's pathetic fangirling and guys like Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert bravely proclaiming that they found that spray-tanned avacado-looking muppet fuckable that sold this narrative. The Emmys weren't looking hard to justify their absurd award of Cuomo. They acted this way because they knew giving an award would cement a popular media narrative of Orange man bad and anyone with (D) after name good.
Trevor Noah's and Stephen Colbert's throbbing chick boners were pretty embarrassing.
Yeah, fuck him. He should be in jail.
It's coming... Godspeed to the prosecution when they start.
The DoJ already bravely decided that punishing people for holding a sign on the steps of the US Capitol on Jan 6 is of higher importance than going after governor's who intentionally put covid patients in with elderly nursing home patients, resulting in thousands of deaths. Nobody is going after Cuomo for truly criminal behavior. He got drummed out over what is essentially saying creepy shit to his subordinates, which is essentially protected 1A speech. At most, Cuomo will get a strong finger wagging for saying inappropriate shit to his subordinates. Maybe he will pay a fine for his toxic masculinity but he isnt in any real jeopardy.
Have any Republicans been given an Emmy during this century, or have all recipients been left wing celebrities?
Kelsey Grammer
Well, he acted as if he was a human being an almost had me convinced.
That, Britschgi, is worth a standing ovation. Or, maybe you can get the Emmy that that crook didn't deserve.
Yeah, but all would be well here amongst all these Trumpian dipshits if Cuomo just became a Republican and blamed the fact that he can’t seem to stop sexually harassing the people he works with on fucking “cancel culture”. Ahhh... I can just imagine it.
Just look at where I live where our choices to replace our {admittedly bad} governor are the following: 1.a ?!? that used to Be a man whose central issue is that fellow ??!? not be allowed into the Olympics, 2.) a guy touring with a real bear, and 3.) a black guy who Hates other black people and who pulled a gun on his bitch {his words} girlfriend.
Don't worry AmSoc, you'll always be our little Cuomo.
Commie-shit has a really hard time posting with any degree of honesty.
How hard? Well, he never manages to do so; one lie after the other. And it seems commie-shit somehow believes his lies are 'clever'.
Dishonest and stupid; sounds about right for a steaming pile of lefty shit.
Shut the fuck up shit for brains.
Ah, so you're from California? Enjoying the land of democrat inequality?
You're such a bigot. Aren't you supposed to go anti-fash and punch yourself in the face?
Ah to be lectured on bigotry by a fascist. Contradictions, indeed.
Whatever you say, racist transphobe.
American Snowflake is from CA? Wow. I'm, like, surprised and stuff.
Kill yourself.
What's really sad is that if he'd actually been forced out over the number of people he killed (and the ensuing cover-up), they'd probably have let him keep the Emmy.
Since he got busted for a kind of behavior that's been synonymous with the entertainment business for decades, they now can't be seen to have rewarded such a person.
Bingo
I'm still flabbergasted he's been crucified for sexual harrasment before murder of the elderly.
Also, fantastic article. I came in hot and was delughtfully trolled.
We try to focus on what's important. An upper middle class white woman who graduated from Bryn Mawr was shocked by comments about her ankles.
Don't waste resources pursuing the perfect when you can accomplish the good.
It would be wrong to posit (even for the purposes of snark) that Cuomo was some genius actor who fooled well meaning people into believing a lie. No one outside of the delusional left, who controls large parts of the media and entertainment complex that hands out awards, actually bought into any of his act.
The Cuomo saga was literally a family act. His own brother covered for him at CNN, and his political brothers did the same elsewhere. They made a hero out of a guy who essentially infected the entire nation. Meanwhile, they bury or collectively ignore true stories like the Hunter Biden laptop incident.
These people threw a fit when Trump called them "enemies of the people". They have not ONE iota of self awareness or objectivity in their sorry woke existence.
The current media industry should largely be wiped out and replaced. Preferably with real journalists. Regardless, the Marxist propagandists now in control have to go. This would deprive the democrats of much of their power, and destroy their ability to win national elections.
It was under Cuomo that the state issued guidance requiring nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients being discharged from hospitals without proper testing and isolation protocols in place to prevent spread, resulting in potentially thousands of excess nursing home deaths.
Potentially? Are you fucking kidding me, Britschgi? The governor lied and exaggerated constantly. And that deserves an award.
Where is your moral compass? Do you even have one, Britschgi?
Cover-ups are pretty much an admission of guilt.
Everybody wants to be the Babylon Bee.
"Instead, Cuomo effectively used his daily press conferences to claim that the state's nursing home deaths were tragically unavoidable and that New York had actually done a better job than most states at preventing them."
Shouldn't that be "falsely claim"? Or is that reserved for Republicans?
Or claim,”without evidence”.
Seriously, is this all you can find to report and opine on. with everything that is going on in the world? Whether some ignorant douchebag gets to keep some irrelevant award he, arguably, should never have received in the first place. My respect for Reason just keeps dwindling.
You sound like you admired the guy; prefer that the story just be memory holed?
2 things: snark and real point.
Snark: I'm waiting for the revocation of Obama's Peace Prize.
Real point: Once an organization makes a decision and gives something away (eg, an award or an honorary degree), they should have to live with it. Rewriting history is self-serving and taking back something conferred is reneging. As an example, the honorary degree that Temple gave to Cosby is his. They gave it to him, and it is his. They can't go back and undo it. They can't retroactively perform vetting after failing at the time. Own up to your mistakes.
"...Instead, Cuomo effectively used his daily press conferences to claim that the state's nursing home deaths were tragically unavoidable and that New York had actually done a better job than most states at preventing them..."
Sounds like droolin' Joe and his efforts to hide his colossal fuck-up in Afghanistan.
I think the lesson from this is how much people will choose to believe what they want, even if it is increasingly evident that the whole thing is a sham; I have personally observed that the "smartest guys in the room" are all the more likely to participate if they are invested enough [literally or figuratively], and when it all runs off the rails we get snarky post mortems to the effect of "why didn't more people [excluding 'me'] see this coming?"
Never underestimate the ability and willingness of persons to deceive themselves and to drag whomever they can along for the ride. Go team.
Interesting take considering that less than a year ago, this very same author, on this very site penned an article with the headline "Andrew Cuomo's Emmy Award for His COVID-19 Briefings Is a Disgusting Prioritization of Style Over Substance".
Well. I mean if we're being objective about this. Cuomo acted like an honest, competent leader who leads by example and takes ownership and responsibility for his actions who cares about the people he has been put in charge of. You can't argue with the superb acting performance.
Also, seriously, how do the academy people go about revoking his award. They can strike his name of off their stupid record books or whatever (sure, freedom of speech or whatever, they can retroactively lie and say that actually, he didn't win the award, their record book says he didn't) but how do they legally go about taking the physical award from him. Unless he's forced to sell it at an auction due to bankruptcy from all the lawsuits; the actual physical award is his forever. Unless there's some clause in his contract like the NCAA did with Reggie Bush or something.
A lot of the time, the award is indefinitely lent to the winner, not given. They started doing it that way to prevent awardees from selling off their trophies. Not sure if Emmy is the same way, but that would be one way they could take it back. However, I don't think anyone particularly cares about the statuette now. The censure was the point.
Wow...
Kathy Hochul (D), New York's first female governor who succeeded Cuomo, acknowledged that nearly 12,000 COVID deaths went unreported by Cuomo. The state now says that 55,400 New Yorkers died of the virus when Cuomo reported 43,400 as of his last day in office.
"We're now releasing more data than had been released before publicly, so people know the nursing home deaths and the hospital deaths are consistent with what's being displayed by the CDC," Hochul said during an appearance on MSNBC on Wednesday. "There's a lot of things that weren't happening and I'm going to make them happen. Transparency will be the hallmark of my administration."
Does this mean that Obama's Nobel Peace Prize will be revoked too. I mean, he did nothing to promote peace. He also inflamed U.S. inter-racial relationships. Sound like a revocation is in order.
What needs to be revoked are the jobs of those that thought Cuomo deserved an Emmy in the first place.
Actually, it IS just to revoke his Emmy, not because he's a sexual harasser (as needs to be proven in court... as if Democrat politicians EVER get prosecuted for this stuff) but because it was a Fake AF award invented for partisan political purposes that had NOTHING to do with his performance (including killing Grandma) and EVERYTHING to do with saying, "Obey the Experts / Vote Democrat."
Though, I must say, killing Grandma and boasting about your healthcare prowess in a book you had your staff write while keeping a Hero persona might be worth an Emmy.
The final indignity Cuomo must face is his arrest, indictment and trial for his March 2020 order forcing NYC covid hospital patients into local area nursing homes. This led to more than 15,000 covid deaths. The final chapter must be, when convicted Cuomo serve many years in prison
"Yet it was his commanding performance at COVID-era press conferences during the early months of the pandemic that ultimately netted him the Emmy."
No, it was the flagrant politicization of using an Emmy award to "get at" Trump by the liberal elite establishment.
Trump was a dumbass, but no more so than these shit stains.
