Cancel Culture Is Ruining Jeopardy!

The unexpectedly acrimonious search for a new host is undermining Alex Trebek's legacy.

Longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was fond of saying he was not the star of television's foremost quiz program: That distinction belonged to the contestants. But following the beloved showman's death from cancer last year, a series of surprisingly divisive guest-host controversies are undermining Trebek's maxim.

For the last several weeks, Jeopardy! has felt more like a reality TV contest with the permanent hosting gig as the ultimate prize. The show cycled through a seemingly unending list of guest hosts, each of whom were granted one or two weeks' worth of episodes to prove their bona fides. The quality of these would-be replacements varied wildly: Jeopardy! all-time champion Ken Jennings gave a competent performance; Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was unexpectedly delightful; TV doctor (and charlatan) Mehmet Oz should not have been given the opportunity in the first place.

But the winners were Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards and The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik. The latter was selected to host special tournaments, while the former would host the show on a daily basis.

This outcome did not sit well with some members of the media and Jeopardy!'s fan community, however, so cancel culture did its thing. Last week, following the publication of a hit piece in The Ringer accusing him of all the usual moral failings—chief among them, derisive comments he made on his podcast—Richards abruptly resigned. Bialik is filling in for the meantime, but she, too, has faced attempted cancellation, namely for being a self-described "liberal Zionist" who believes that both Israel and Palestine deserve to be "autonomous, free, and safe" nations.

For many longtime fans—myself among them—this turn of events is embarrassing and insulting to Trebek's memory. The studio* certainly deserves some of the blame here: The network could have simply passed the torch to Jennings, who understands the game better than anyone else on earth and was reportedly Trebek's top choice to succeed him, without forcing him to endure this gauntlet. It also appears to be the case that Richards participated in the search process from behind the scenes as executive producer, which made the whole thing look rigged when he was chosen. These were self-inflicted wounds.

But social media's venomous reaction to Richards' casting lacked any sense of proportion, with many people apoplectic at the idea that a generic-looking white person had beaten out prospective hosts of color like former Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton, Twitter's runaway favorite choice. The Ringer threw everything it had at Richards, frequently quoting anonymous former colleagues at Jeopardy! and The Price is Right, where Richards worked as a producer, who found him to be an abrasive and conniving self-promoter. The article mixes fair criticisms, like Richards internally maneuvering himself into contention, Dick Cheney style, with low blows—the offensive podcast comments—and unverifiable gossip.

Barely acknowledged in the article, or by the online critics, is the fact that Richards was undeniably compelling in the role. He read the clues with skill, rarely stumbling, and he inserted just the right amount of quick, additional commentary. That was Trebek's talent: finding the correct rhythm, and only pausing to interject a short remark when the situation really called for it. It's a skill that Bialik also has in spades, which is why the network's eventual selections aren't actually that surprising. Richards and Bialik were the two guest hosts who really nailed it, so they won.

Yes, it's largely a matter of personal preference. Burton and Katie Couric were both a bit stiff for my tastes; Anderson Cooper clearly knew what he was doing; Rodgers, as I previously mentioned, really shined in a star-athlete-is-also-smart kind of way.

But this acrimonious process has really undermined Trebek's legacy. Trebek's Jeopardy! was a serious intellectual contest first and a game show second. It was nonpartisan, and did not change with the tides of public opinion. As I wrote in Reason's February issue: "The show mercifully avoided the relentless politicization that has wormed its way into so many facets of modern entertainment. Jeopardy! is something that Trump-loving grandparents and liberal Gen Zers can enjoy together with nary a feud. Whoever takes over for Trebek should endeavor to keep it that way."

At present, the forces of cancel culture are getting in the way of this noble purpose. Note that Richards and Bialik are not the only ones to face unfair scrutiny for past comments; Jennings, a progressive Democrat, has drawn criticism from conservatives for unfavorable remarks he made about Republicans. Jennings apologized for the tone of those comments, and that ought to be enough. If everyone who ever said something they now regret is disqualified from hosting Jeopardy!, then the network might as well give the job to Watson.

Correction: Jeopardy! is distributed by CBS Media Ventures and produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Executive producer manipulates events to yield his preferred outcome. He is also widely regarded as an asshole and people quickly sought to undermine him.

    Shocked face.

The rest of this article is strikingly naive. "Why didn't Richards just do the thing that he didn't personally want?"

Quick: What was Alex Trebek's opinion on Palestine?

Trabek doesn't write the questions and answers.

        1. Kevin Smith   4 years ago

Nor is he a final authority (or any authority) on the answers. He has to defer to the judges who determine what the correct answers are. If the judges say Palestine is wrong and Israel is correct, Trebek just has to keep the show rolling.

Richards ran into trouble also because he's an executive producer, which made it seem like he chose himself. Jennings and Bialik or Bialik alone seem like the best way to go.

    1. Bubba Jones   4 years ago

Bialik has better things to do.

      1. Kevin Smith   4 years ago

That was my understanding, Bialik was offered the entire gig, but wasn't able to commit the amount of time needed to host the daily show, so they just grabbed the most convenient runner up, which of course happened to be Richards.

I think she has some lame sitcom on CBS. After TBBT, I’m sure they lay her a shitload per episode, plus a cut of the syndication and streaming revenue out of the gate. That’s a hard deal to beat.

I disagree with most of what was said here. Beginning with Alex being universally loved. I, and others, found him to be narcissistic and condescending, esp. to women, Still I watched religiously for 30 years. I do agree that most of the replacement were just awful. Exceptions are Rodgers, Jennings, and David Faber. Bailick, while being one of a handful that seemed actually to be alive, was obnoxious, loud and egotistical, following in Alex's footsteps of always interjecting themselves into the discussion.
Though I had never heard of David Faber, and still have no idea to his claim to fame, I found him head and shoulders above the rest. He was energetic, kept a good pace and was contestant focused and let them shine.
Sadly, I doubt he'll get the job b/c he's a white male. That would never do. Unless you are an insider like Richards.

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

Interesting; on one hand you accuse Trebek of being condescending to women and then accuse "Bailick" [sic] of being obnoxious and loud and not apparently not acting like a woman.

So which is it, are you a chauvinist or a misogynist?

      1. Dead inside   4 years ago

By you definition both I guess.

Also I have had several spinal injuries, 4 requiring surgery and sometimes my body doesn't do what my brain askes it to do.
              My apologies.

Listen, I seriously doubt anyone here is going to give a proverbial flying about your detailed description of your "disabilities" and if you thought "oh I'm sorry but I have..." is going to chasten anyone into playing reciprocal sorry you are gravely mistaken. I don't care what is wrong with you, either contribute or don't but do not use disabilities as a tactic or excuse when doing so. That is just beyond fucking pathetic.

[For what it's worth I am older than you and that is the biggest bullshit excuse of them all]

                1. Dead inside   4 years ago

I simply offered my opinion on a topic. I then responded to a reply and gave further information. I was trying to be civil and provide full context. I don't assume anything about you or other commenters.

"following in Alex’s footsteps of always interjecting themselves into the discussion." is what he said.

"not acting like a woman" was in your head.

Interesting; on one hand you accuse Trebek of being condescending to women and then accuse “Bailick” [sic] of being obnoxious and loud and not apparently not acting like a woman.

I also noted that Trebek was narcissistic and condescending, but better than a number of his replacements and so terrible that they only watched faithfull for 30 yrs. until his death. With enemies like that...

        1. Dead inside   4 years ago

What can I say, I like to play along. Also I never claimed to be Alex's friend.

          1. mad.casual   4 years ago

Also I never claimed to be Alex’s friend.

And I find anchors and hosts who try to act like they're my friends to be condescending and narcissistic. I'm not tuning in because I'm your friend and I don't think that's why you would want me tuning in.

        2. Nardz   4 years ago

Trebek was definitely condescending. It was a huge part of his charm. Will Ferrell's version would never work otherwise.

          1. mad.casual   4 years ago

He's the host. He's got all the answers and represents the people making the rules. He should be condescending. Especially when Cliff Clavin answers "Who are 3 people who've never been in my kitchen?" Otherwise, the show gets all epistemological and SJW-y.

I agree with you on David Faber. I didn't know who he was either. I thought Bialik was the best until Faber hosted. I thought Faber and Joe Buck were both really good, but I think Buck is too busy doing play by play for both the NFL and MLB to be able to be the regular host.

      1. CE   4 years ago

Yeah, but Buck could have improved TV sports and Jeopardy by taking the Jeopardy job full time.

I thought Bialik was the best until Faber hosted.

I don't know what you were smoking at the time, but you should probably take a break from it for a while. Bialik was one of if not the worst of the bunch. On every correct answer her response sounded like she was talking down to some insecure preschooler she was trying to encourage. It was like nails on a chalkboard.

  4. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   4 years ago

    "Jennings, a progressive Democrat"

    He won't accept the job.

Because if there's one thing I know about progressive Democrats — especially white males — it's that they always practice what they preach. Certainly he believes in diversity enough to step aside and let Burton become the permanent host.

Trabek disgraced his own legacy several years ago when he basically endorsed Democrat PA Gubernatorial candidate Tom Wolf while purportedly moderating the only debate against Republican candidate Scott Wagner.

During the debate, Trabek proclaimed that climate change was destroying the planet, said that everyone should all agree to take drastic action to save the planet, and criticized Wagner for supporting the energy industry in PA (especially natural gas fracking).

Trabek's performance as moderator of the PA governor's debate was as biased as Chris Wallace during the Biden/Wallace debate against Trump.

    1. Bill Godshall   4 years ago

As a longtime Jeopardy fan (since Art Fleming was moderator), I've become disappointed by the dumbing down of questions to become like Trivial Pursuit.

Categories like Geography, History, Math, Science, Technology, Presidents, States, etc. have been replaced by Old TV Hits, New TV Hits, Old Pop Music, New Pop Music, Hollywood Gossip, etc.

      1. Hank Ferrous   4 years ago

Consider both the typical contestant, and the typical viewer, and you have the reason for this.

"We have changed everything about this country - our very being here," Angelou told David Frost during a PBS interview. "And I turn on a program like `Jeopardy!,' where quite often I am featured, or my name or some book I've written or some music I've written is the answer. And I see no black people on it." - Maya Angelou.

        1. Cronut   4 years ago

Jeopardy is white supremacy culture. It is obsessed with objectively correct answers.

We shoud demand a more equitable quiz show that centers alternative ways of knowing instead of "facts."

          1. Spiritus Mundi   4 years ago

It is not just Cancel Culture it is also culture in general. When I was a kid game show hosts started as unknowns and developed in to stars. Today the shows are often handed to established stars. Maybe Jeopardy should have found a new Alex Trebek rather than trying out a bunch of stars. Alex knew this best the real star has to be the show not the host.

    1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

Alex Trebek spent years rising up through the game show hosting ranks. I’m not sure there are the number of game shows there used to be.

    2. Soledad Dimond   4 years ago

Alex Trebek had been a gameshow host for over a decade when he took over the revival of Jeopardy from Art Fleming you stupid fucking shank. Jesus Christ you're fucking stupid.

With M4E I think it's pretty much "both sides!" [while clearly promoting one over the other] and all about the feelz.

      2. Moderation4ever   4 years ago

Was Alex Trebek a star when he got Jeopardy? What I am saying is that the show is the star and host becomes a star. Too many games shows today start with a star and that takes from the game.

I like liked both Trebek and Fleming, but if there is a real star of Jeopardy is Merv Giffin who developed the show.

        1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

Sorry, I was just trying to make an observation, not argue against what you said.

I’m not sure how Robbie could have liked Richards because he only interjected when appropriate, and then feels that Bialik was similar. Her ability to act surprised at correct answers to mundane questions and to laugh in the most inappropriate places was incredibly irritating.

I've always felt this way about Bialik. Between the "I'm a neuroscientist!" schtick and the "I'm really a neurotic chimp trying to act like a human." persona, I can't even watch her in TV commercials. No Miyam, real neuroscientists don't hock brain vitamins on commercials. Real female scientists don't create their own TV shows about trying to bag a man while living with cats.

Yeah, she was annoying as hell as the host, and from what I can tell so is her real-life personality in general...which was a little surprising given that she had what was probably the most entertaining character on The Big Bang Theory.

Richards and Bialik were the two guest hosts who really nailed it, so they won.

Yep, that was the evaluation here, too. And given Bialik's current TV series (Call Me Kat) was renewed for a second season, it was assumed that she couldn't do full-time hosting, so of course Richards got the regular gig.

All of them are going to suck because everyone is so used to Trebek's style and presentation.

LeVar Burton is Twitter's favorite because he's black and was on a show people of Tweeting age remember from when they were kids (and as a fellow Trojan I wish he'd been better). Wokeness and nostalgia are not good reasons to pick him although he's probably going to get it after all this.

Jennings was Trebek's favorite because he knew him personally and I think he's weak but he's a safe choice and you can point to his time around the show as his qualification.

The split host with Bialik is stupid. Pick a host, tell the scolds that you made a choice based on merit not on checkboxes and be done with it.

    1. WuzYoungOnceToo   4 years ago

I don't think Burton was the best, but he was a hell of a lot better at it than Bialik.

The producers should have just raised the ghost of Art Fleming and been done with it.

    1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

Maybe there’s a skips-a-generation grandchild of Art Fleming out there, like a Hank Williams III of game show hosting.

    2. mad.casual   4 years ago

I think CGI Fleming would appropriately blow the minds of people eager to check a checkbox.

    3. Cal Cetín   4 years ago

  23. A Cynical Asshole   4 years ago

It also appears to be the case that Richards participated in the search process from behind the scenes as executive producer, which made the whole thing look rigged when he was chosen.

That was the only thing that caused me to raise my eyebrows when Richards was chosen. I couldn't care less about some "mean comments" he may have made in the past or unfounded gossip about what an asshole he allegedly is. Seems like they could have just named him the replacement from the start and not gone through the charade of guest hosts, but I assume they went through that because they figured it would be a good way to boost ratings and now it's biting them in the ass because some mental toddlers didn't get their way.

FWIW, I haven't watched Jeopardy in years, I don't get home from work early enough, so I don't have any opinion on who should host. Just seems like they could have spared themselves some embarrassment.

I also suspect that most of the Twitterati calling for Burton are just doing so because his skin's the right color. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he did a fine job, he's a veteran TV host/ actor after all, but that's not the reason the blue check marks want him.

    1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

I’m sorry, but no. LeVar has a lot more going for him than merely being black. To assume people are fans because of his skin color is to buy into the culture wars.

      1. Don't look at me!   4 years ago

Funny you didn’t mention those qualities.

      2. A Cynical Asshole   4 years ago

LeVar has a lot more going for him than merely being black.

No shit. I even said "I’m sure he did a fine job, he’s a veteran TV host/ actor after all" but I guess you just skipped right over that part. I didn't see any of the guest host episodes, so I don't have an opinion on who should take over. I'm sure Burton would be a fine choice (and not because of his skin color - that should have no bearing at all).

To assume people are fans because of his skin color is to buy into the culture wars.

Many of the cool-aid haired "Twidiots" that have been calling for Burton have explicitly said in their own words that they want Burton because they don't want another white man to host. No assuming required when they say it outright.

If the plan all along was to have Richards take over they really hoisted themselves by their own petard with the whole guest host bullshit. They should have just named him the replacement and moved on, again, assuming that was really the plan all along.

        1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

“I’m sure Burton would be a fine choice (and not because of his skin color – that should have no bearing at all).”

Then why bring it up. You are accusing some vague Twitter demographic of supporting him only because of his skin color, but you just made it up out of thin air. No cites to anyone actually doing that.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   4 years ago

Then why bring it up. You are accusing some vague Twitter demographic of supporting him only because of his skin color, but you just made it up out of thin air. No cites to anyone actually doing that.

They may, but why fixate on it.

I know tastes vary, but I really like David Faber (surprised me, too!) I thought he a great job not only of reading the clues and running the action, but didn't make himself part of the display. I felt the over enthusiastic exclamations (at times shock?) of some the hosts ... off putting. Yes, I mean LeVar. He loves Jeopardy, and Reading Rainbow and ST:TNG earned him a lot of love ... but not that much for the next decade or two of watching that.

I felt like Faber was closer to the Trebek ideal of keeping focus on the game and players with stability and steady presentation. But tastes vary, and I don't begrudge anyone a different opinion.

Unless it is Joe Buck, then you are wrong and should go away, just watch Family Feud and eat bonbons on the couch. 🙂 JK. (no I'm not).

    1. Clemdane   4 years ago

I like Faber, too. I've always enjoyed watching him on CNBC. I'm pretty surprised he would leave financial reporting for a game show, but I guess we can't define people by the only job we've seen them in.

I don't really care about what he said on his podcasts.

Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton, Twitter's runaway favorite choice. The Ringer threw everything it had at Richards, frequently quoting anonymous former colleagues at Jeopardy! and The Price is Right, where Richards worked as a producer, who found him to be an abrasive and conniving self-promoter.

    IT'S SHOWBIZ, FOR FUCK'S SAKE.

The Ringer needs to rot in hell.
Bill Simmons used to be hands down my favorite writer, back when he was writing The Sports Guy on ESPN page 2. He had a knack for pop culture zeitgeist, psychological insight, and Seinfeldesque examination of life/events.
Alas, some people can't handle success.
He got popular, it went to his head, moved to LA, and went on a justice crusade against Goodell over concussions. He seemingly renounced all his former beliefs and personality to go full woke.
Now I refer to him as Zombie Bill Simmons, just as he used to call the Thunder the Zombie Sonics.
RIP Bill Simmons, the sports guy.
      Fuck Zombie Bill Simmons.

As a fan of both Jeopardy and progressive politics, I've been following this. For every one comment about her positions on Israel, I've seen at least one or two *hundred* about her anti-vax positions and implying if women in Hollywood dressed more modestly, Weinstein might not have been a problem.

But leave it to Reason to portray the the tiniest fringe of progressives most unfavorable view as not only their only issue, but the main issue of all progressives.

I don't like how this site is taking more and more pages from the Fox News playbook and becoming substantially more manipulative of information towards conservative, rather than libertarian, ends.

I missed the part where Reason asserted she was a progressive democrat.

Given her comments about Weinstein, it would appear that she's got at least a bit of a puritanical conservative bent.

She suggested that if women conducted themselves more conservatively, they might not find themselves working with men who treat them like sex objects. Cancel culture is another word for social pressure, which is something that happens in societies. It only takes on this alternative name when it applies to white people who did things that offended minorities.

By contrast, things like segregation, disenfranchisement, gay erasure, and a thousand other oppressions might be called cancel culture, except they were usually perpetrated by the state. None of that was ever endorsed by the cancel culture whiners, I'm sure.

I recommend not treating Twitter as real life. In real life, you can make an awkward stumble and get forgiven, because you're interacting with people with eyes and gestures and inflections and not just disembodied hot takes. I see people talk about Twitter like it's existed since the beginning of time and we have no choice but to submit to its emotional manipulations. Imagine if I treated the Reason comments board like it was real. I'd feel positively bullied sometimes.

    1. Dace Highlander   4 years ago

        1. Dace Highlander   4 years ago

Buh buh buh you said it was only practiced by the state and was only called that when applied to white people. We’re you perhaps wrong?
And when you say white people, do you mean Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Central European, Russo-Slavic, Australian? Wouldn’t want you to be painting with too broad of a brush.

    2. mad.casual   4 years ago

It only takes on this alternative name when it applies to white people who did things that offended minorities.

Shikha was white people offending minorities?

    3. Trigger Warning   4 years ago

Sure, Tony. Applying "social pressure" to end segregation is the same thing as a Shitter mob digging up an off-color joke from a decade ago, and hounding the perpetrator off of whole sectors of the intertubes.

Online faux-outrage is easy. Probably satisfies people's need to belong to a group. It's also juvenile and antithetical to having actual discussions about basically anything.

Remember the one about the author who canceled his own book's publication because the mob accosted him for writing from POVs he (or she, xir, whatever), personally, could not experience in real life? Like basically every fucking writer in human history? What the fuck is that about? Imagining life from other people's perspectives is an expression of the human capacity for empathy, which, as you probably agree, helps make us better people.

But yeah, social pressure. Sure. Like Salman Rushdie and the Ayatollah.

      1. Tony   4 years ago

I agree, those things are annoying. I've been highly critical of social media here. I think it sucks balls and should die. Humans are evolved to interact in person, and even then we have to go to great lengths not to be terrible.

That said, what's the body count of cancel culture, exactly? Is it zero? I think it's zero.

I don't have time for your problem if it doesn't have a body count. Not in the post-Trump world.

        1. Trigger Warning   4 years ago

Well, we can agree about social media.

I don't think "body count" makes a good yardstick. Lots of things are serious problems without resulting in death. I mean, yeah, I'll concede that Shitter mobs are less of a problem than, I dunno, Boko Haram. But easy online mobbing, the silencing of undesirables, the tyranny of the majority are not GOOD things. They should worry liberty-minded people greatly. Shouting down the messenger when you don't like the message stifles communication. Poor communication perpetuates ignorance.

  44. Tony   4 years ago

Two surefire methods to avoid being canceled:

    1. Don't be famous
    2. Don't get caught

You only need to satisfy one of these. I am not famous, but I nevertheless don't keep a record of every racist thing I've ever said on the internet. But I have discovered something nobody else apparently has: Twitter is not necessary for life. I got off booze, cigarettes, pills of various sorts, cough medicine, nail biting, and ruminating. You can get off Twitter.

Now if you can just avoid finger-banging people in public against their will, you should be OK.
