Plexiglass Barriers Are Everywhere, but They're Probably Useless
There's a good chance they haven't been preventing the spread of COVID, and they might even be counterproductive.

Eateries have adapted to COVID in countless ways. Hostesses take our temperatures upon entry. We scan QR codes instead of reading paper menus. We are served by masked waiters. In some cities, unsightly plexiglass barriers have appeared between tables and bar seats.
Restaurants should be given broad latitude to adapt how they see fit, to best protect their workers and return a degree of confidence to their customers. But some of these adaptations verge on hygiene theater. When those plexiglass barriers are used in classrooms, they "might be making things worse by blocking ventilation," to quote Zeynep Tufekci, who then points to a new study in Science.
Aerosol scientists kept telling me that plexiglass barriers might be making things *worse* by blocking ventilation. Just out in Science. Desk shields associated with *increased* illness risk in schools. Closing playground? Also uptick. So many upshots. https://t.co/lcyt647Xkm pic.twitter.com/JZs0CcdCO8
— zeynep tufekci (@zeynep) May 7, 2021
For a virus that spreads via airborne transmission of aerosols—something scientists have known for many months, though it took the World Health Organization until the end of April to update its guidance—these plastic barriers between diners were always a confusing addition. Think of the particles that disperse through the air when someone smokes a cigarette. A plastic barrier wouldn't prevent you from smelling that cigarette and breathing some of that same air.
It would be one thing if this form of hygiene theater was limited to restaurants. But school districts across the country have forced children to try to learn while encased in plexiglass desk dividers—that is, if they've allowed kids to return to full-time in-person schooling at all.
Not only does this make it harder for children to connect with their friends and teachers, but forcing them to learn this way may lead them to speak up louder to be heard—an act that increases aerosol production and is more likely to spread COVID than speaking at a quieter volume. Given the incredibly low risk of death to children posed by COVID, and the mounting evidence that Plexiglass barriers do not make people safer, it's past time to remove them; a kindergarten classroom shouldn't be filled with thick, see-through partitions like a convenience store in a bad part of town.
Some might counter that if they make people feel safer, that ought to be reason enough to keep plexiglass barriers in place. But this is misguided. Hygiene theater gives people a false understanding of how this virus actually works and which preventative measures to take. Pervasive COVID anxiety should not be used to justify silly rituals, especially when there's good evidence a ritual may hurt us in the end.

None of that matters. It's obvious that they work. It's obvious masks work. It's obvious that 6' is the magic number.

Plastic barriers are racist when installed in a downtown convince store, but totes cool in a classroom.

I kinda like "convince store". It might apply to any vendor selling image.

anxiety should not be used to justify silly rituals, especially when there's good evidence a ritual may hurt us
You know, that could apply to *lots* of things.
Pretty much everything that most people do and believe.
While I agree "anxiety should not be used to justify silly rituals", it's not very nice to tell that to someone, especially if they have obsessive compulsive disorder. Might as well tell an alcoholic they shouldn't drink.
As a libertarian, I want them to have that freedom, so I'm free to engage in what others may describe as silly rituals, that may be important to me. I even strongly believe people should be free to pray, and that's good for society, as it's arguably a silly ritual.
To be fair Ms. Wolf mentions this in the context of government schools. Yet, then the problem is government involvement in education. It's our job to decide how to protect ourselves during a pandemic, not the government's.

"not very nice to tell that to someone, especially if they have obsessive compulsive disorder. "
Typical patronizing leftist attitude.
Would it be better to use that occasion to show them how silly and unrealistic their disorder is?
So in other words, they're just like everything else the CDC told people to do.
The only benefit of plexiglass barriers is as sneeze guards. Otherwise they are silly. Masks are much more effective as sneeze guards and for removing smaller particles from breath.
masks are not effective. Says published research youre too lazy to read.
CDD NIH and the research in dentistry worldcontradict your False Meme
Masks are effective bud. The research on them is pretty overwhelming in fact. Cherry picking a few studies that have shown equivocal results does not make your point. You’re living in an alternate universe
Masks are so effective that every state that eliminated its mask mandate this year has done better since then. The research is overwhelming in the opposite direction, or in your mind does any study conducted before 2020 not count?
youre a liar
No they are not. The research on them IS pretty overwhelming yes- in that masks do no work, especially cloth ones but even including surgical ones. Look it up.
They are pretty much gone here except for some retail and places like that and starting to go away there.
We are are now 40% full vaxxed. I saw Cali was getting in on the lottery idea. The Ohio one seems to be working. They had uptick in new vaxxers.
Plus the girls at the Crazy Horse are offering a free lap dance if you have a card. Ok not sure about that one actually.
Of course, they are creating a problem for the great pandemic of 2025. People in 2026 will wait to get vaccinated until they think the bribe for doing so has reached the highest level it will.
If bribes are to be given when you want people to do something sooner rather than later, they should decrease over time, not increase. Perhaps base the incentive on the percent of population vaccinated - when 25% are vaccinated, the bribe is x, when 50% are vaccinated the bribe is x/2and when 75% are vaccinated the bribe is 0 (as, presumably, herd immunity has been reached).
And there could also be disincentives. Such as modifying the ACA (yes, that horrible beast) to, once vaccines are widely available, allow insurance companies to immediately impose a surcharge of up to 20% on health insurance premiums for any covered individual who is not fully vaccinated within 60 days of announcement of the pending surcharge. (And such surcharges would NOT be considered in calculating subsidies.) Those with true individualized medical reasons for not getting the vaccine, the surcharge would be waived upon submission of a doctor's statement and review of that (and, possibly, the patient's medical record and an insurance company exam) by the insurance company.
Similar scheme for Medicare and Medicaid...
That's a very unintentional funny comment you made.
How the heck is a mask effective as a sneeze guard? If you sneeze, you blow the mask away from your face. IF the straps hold, your breath is still going out all around the edges, not through the mask.
Yup. They got EVERYTHING wrong.
>>Hostesses take our temperatures upon entry.
those death-rays *never* have me higher than 95.3 am I undead?
This was hilarious when there was snow on the ground. Walked out of the cold, skin temperature way below normal. What did anyone expect?
We've got a sensor at the doors to the plant you have to wave something in front of to enter, and it better be a plausible body temperature that's not a fever, if you don't want to set off an alarm.
I've had to lick my finger and wave it around a bit, before letting it be scanned, thanks to speed walking a few miles during my lunch break in the SC summer. Seems just a brisk walk in 100 degree weather is enough to make it think you have a fever.
Brett, Such a walk in 100° humid weather does nit sound very healthy for an "oldster"
I always say “Ow, that stings!”
Gee, if masks and plexiglass didn't work, did we really need the lockdowns?
Reason once again 14 months behind the curve.
It is clear that lock downs did not mitigate C19 mortality. All they did was make folks miserable, injure the economy, etc. Obviously a net harm.
That is definitely not true. There have been several studies showing the effectiveness of lockdowns in reducing virus transmission and cases.
the lying Trolls favorite retort is " no it isnt"
Cite one of these " studies"
Prisons anyone?
A prison is not the same as a “lockdown” where people stay home. Prisons are huge shared spaces with pretty poor hygiene and ventilation. Surely you can appreciate that difference.
...
What's the difference? You didn't mention any.
Lockdowns=house arrest.
It is trivial to show that lock down severity does not correlate with C19 mortality so QED - motherfucker.
Nope. Those studies showed that lockdowns didn't help. In fact, they likely made the spread of Wuhan virus greater by keeping people inside. That's why when Texas and other states ended their lockdowns, things got better!
Why the sudden narrative shift on "emergency" wuflu measures?

Remember when restaurants had smoking sections? Remember those ridiculous glass barriers between them and the non-smoking sections? It was like having a pissing and non-pissing section of a pool divided by a polo net.
I don't remember the glass barriers.
Do remember smoking sections. My first time on an airplane as a very young boy the left side was smoking, the right side was no smoking. Like that made any difference.
Remember movie theaters with a smoking aisle? Seats with little ashtrays on the armrests?
I loved the theaters with a smoking balcony above the projector.
the smoking thing wasnt so bad intil the energy crisis ( manufactured hysteria like AGW) led to shutting HVAC systems down or reducing ventilation. Ventilation costs a ton of heating or cooling work = $$$$.
I don’t remember the glass barriers.
Do remember smoking sections.
They were usually more subtle and grew up more organically as we weren't taking 2 weeks to flatten the curve of second-hand smoke and shutting down bars, restaurants, and concert venues until they complied.
Polo nets totally stop the diffusion of pee through the pool. Science! Follow it.
Never swim in one of those pools with a swim up bar. I’ve seen guys spend the whole day there drinking beer and not getting up once.
Ewwwwwww !
How do they stay hydrated?
I thought the smoke eaters worked OK. But then, I was always smoking, so probably couldn't tell. I do miss smoking in restaurants. Though I understand why many people don't.

Our school is filled with 6 foot high acrylic trifles. God were those a pain in the ass to assemble. Now we're taking them out, and I've got what? Thousands of square feet of material. I've been trying to think of a use for them. I thought about using them to wainscott the cafeteria, but it's not really needed and would look horrible. Maybe I'll build a maze outside for Halloween?
*tri-folds
Either way works, although they are probably quite expensive trifles.
They're a good starting material for making aquariums and terrariums. You can weld the material using a hot air gun.
And, as I point out below, probably polycarbonate, not acrylic. Acrylic is cheap, but terribly brittle, and shatters sharp.

They should have made the things projectile-resistant so they would have multiple uses after the pandemic.
Glue to a wooden frame and you’ve got a greenhouse.
Cool idea and the kids could grow plants in there as a project.
It would be an excellent auxillary use for the panels when they're not stopping bullets that could also teach kids the valuable lifetime skill of raising their own food too. Supplement or even replace school lunches with some nutritious tomatoes, potatoes, pickles, starwberries, blueberries, grapes, anything they like. And when they raise a surplus, they can move on to learn entrepreneurship and raise money for their textbooks, facilities, activities, parties, etc. The possibilities are endless if someone doesn't come along and squash the idea.
Yep, murderers are disgusting and it'd be nice if we punished them with public hangings again. No one is arguing for people to get away with murder, but I suspect your "solution" is only government employees own guns and no citizens, in which case you can fuck right off.
Whereever did you get that???
Wanting projectile-resistant barriers and all of the multiple uses mentioned does not equal opposing the right to keep and bear arms in defense of Life, Liberty, and Property.
In fact, they all go together quite nicely. In fact, the same governments that heap 20,000+ gun laws on U.S. Citizens also restrict access to projectile-resistant barriers and armor as well.
Just like Jefferson observed, ignorant and free in a state of civilization never was and can never be. Please improve your reading comprehension before firing off like that.

Masks work. Plexiglass barriers don’t. Unventilated outdoor tents are even worse.
masks do not work says cdc nih and published research from dentistry
It is true that it is very hard to clean or fix your teeth while you are wearing a mask.
Dentistry has many needs for expensive special precautions that masks don't solve.
The outdoor sidewalk tents are horrible. I can understand why they initially went up but it was clear by last summer that fomites weren't an issue at all. Which meant the 'science' should have given a near-allclear for outdoor activities. That would have changed school reopenings, possibly changed gym/exercise reopenings (which may in turn have encouraged reducing the major comorbidity here in the US), encouraged a long-overdue argument in urban neighborhoods about mixed-zoning and the use of streets/sidewalks for multi-mode, and sent a signal to the politicized paranoid Karens that you don't need a mask while walking your dog.
The local school district has invested in an absolutely phenomenal amount of lexan barriers, and not thin, either. I wonder what they're going to do with them once they have to take them down?
I'm hoping they might be available really cheap as surplus, I could use that lexan to manufacture some nice aquariums, and clean up.
By the way, lexan, or generically, polycarbonate. Plexiglass, generically acrylic, is horribly brittle, hard to work with, and a cut hazard almost as great as untempered glass. Most of those shields you see will be polycarbonate.
Why do you assume they're ever coming down?
Because I live in South Carolina, not California. We've already dropped the mask requirement in schools.
The panels could make for nice greenhouses for student projects although thin plastic sheeting is quite effective for that purpose and far cheaper
Well, that means the shield can double as shivs, amirite?

" spreading covid" is a lie.
CDC ( god) sats covid is SARS 2, a lung disease. That results after getting the virus and tge persons immune system freaking out.
That IS NOT TRANSMISSIBLE
This, arguably only considers half the equation. Not only does the plexiglass stop airflow, it can/does selectively enhance it. To be a complete Sophist about it: if you built a plexiglass box around the cold air return and put one of the infected in it, without appropriate filtration or treatment, it would be a rather well-designed infection dispersal unit. With such a setup, 6 feet and other arbitrary barriers (besides constructing other bubbles) wouldn'tmuch matter.
Except you don't know who is infected. If you knew that, only hospitals and prisons would need to take any measures other than keeping the infected out.
plexi. does not stop airflow. It changes it and causes turbulence.
That's a bit of what I meant. The article makes it seem like blocking and stagnating air is the only problem, but multiple studies have shown that, based on the microdroplet dispersion model, ventillation is how the virus overcomes the 6 ft. rule. Arbitrarily erecting barriers, especially without knowing who's infected, does little to prevent and could reasonably enhance the spread. It's not unreasonable to assume that some of the barriers are worse than useless.
It is absolutely theater. Everyone knows it is complete nonsense, but the fear mob will not be placated by science.

Off topic, but here in a definitely liberal area in upstate NY, where Cuomo ended the mask mandate shortly after the CDC did, in a supermarket that now has no signs requiring masks, about 90% of supermarket customers are still wearing them. Is it like that in other parts of the country?
In my part of Denver, it is maybe 2/3 still wearing - with close to 2/3 in Denver now fully vaccinated. Some of that is just lag - stores that still have the mask sign stuff up but also have a small sign about vaccinated. So people who bring the mask from the car just in case then put it on because the signs are confusing. The number with masks has dropped a lot in the last week.
Seattle remains 100% masked. Masks now, Masks tomorrow, Masks forever.
Here in a dumb place that ended most masking last week for vaccinated and “vaccinated” (wink, wink), I was one of only three supermarket customers (out of ~ 75) without a mask the other afternoon.
Same at [big box store] and [big box store], yesterday evening.
In the ethnic market where I get a few things, I was the only one without a mask, out of 20.
People are such sheep. I can understand kids wearing masks out of habit, since they do so in school, but adults should know better and my region has 65%++ vaccination rates.
No store asked for vaccination proof or proof of antibodies from prior infection, so I don’t understand why very few went without masks.
Even the stores with mask signage have given up enforcement.
People could lie about being vaccinated, but they’re too wimpy to even try.
No one here is asking for proof of anything. The very idea was silly fear mongering. I've talked with a dozen biz and employees about their mask stuff. One biz owner (a coffee house) still has a mask policy in their entry/cashier area. She's ok being a laggard (no R's there) and her employees are often teenagers. So she's waiting for them to either get their 2nd shot + couple weeks - or be comfortable being exposed. Almost half of the rest asked front-facing employees what they were comfortable with and there does appear to be a correlation between those cashier types wearing masks and customers wearing masks.
In no instance did those biz put pressure on those employees re masks. At least not that they admitted to me. I suspect that is one of the factors where those biz can't hire people
To your last point, I’d have to be offered much more money to give up semi-retirement and wear a mask 40 extra hours a week.
It will be a moot point in the near future.
Around here they are already melting away. Even in the big box stores only about half the people wear them. Nobody does outside.
yes, morons still wear them isolated outdoors and alone in their cars.
If you're going to put me in a plexiglass cage at least give me a button that dispenses a hit of coke.
Of course, it is better to have protection than no protection. This kind of glass can prevent COVID-19 to a certain extent, because its transmission is droplet infection.

The plastic aquariums that envelope clerks in robbery prone bodgeas are unlikely to stop a bullet but they are an effective deterrent nonetheless. Likewise, a STOP sign at an intersection will not physically deter movement but it is usually pretty reliable.

After taking note of the lying and deceptions of Fauci/CDC/media , I am convinced that our government is untrustworthy; on that note, please understand that my heritage is Florida cracker and all of us see entrenched government as public enemy #1 and we see very little difference in either Democrats or Republicans. As far as I can tell, what we all have been witnessing is the unmasking of the cult of the omnipotent state wreaking havoc on everything but Operation Warp Speed which was performed in the main by the private sector after Trump removed nearly all government interference.
Not to mention, the people who are comforted by the plexiglass barriers are the same who bemoan plastic waste as a threat to the environment. I don't ever want to hear anyone complain about plastic waste again when we have created such an unbelievable amount of plastic waste to make people feel safer.
Yup I remember when all this started and the groceries went right back to plastic bags and banned the reusable ones.
