The California Exodus Is Real
California has morphed from a land of limitless opportunity to a highly regulated land of limits and control. No wonder so many people are leaving.

From a real-world perspective, the recent news from the California Department of Finance isn't really a big deal. The state's population, which has for years been inching ever so slowly toward the 40-million mark, actually dipped by 182,083 people last year. It won't mean anything for the budget, public policy or our individual lives.
Yet, as CalMatters columnist Dan Walters wrote, "national news organizations went a little berserk" after seeing that statistic. "For the first time in more than a century, California recorded a net loss in population last year, a demographic reversal caused by the deadly toll of the coronavirus and declining immigration and birthrates," The New York Times reported.
Of course, these trends have long been obvious, as Walters and others have noted. But the news was a gut check for state officials—and for Californians' self-esteem. The Golden State has long beckoned people from across America and the globe. That concept is in our DNA—the idea of leaving behind encrusted communities and coming here to start anew. No wonder so many people were shocked by this reversal of fortunes.
The California Dream—a land "of instant wealth, won in a twinkling by audacity and good luck," as one historian put it—took hold during the Gold Rush for obvious reasons. After James W. Marshall in 1848 spotted gold flakes at the sawmill he was building along the South Fork of the American River to serve John Sutter's settlement in Sacramento, it sparked what History.com calls the "largest mass migration in U.S. history."
California's population more than tripled in the following decade. It continued its upward trajectory and spiked dramatically following the end of World War II and the creation of the Cold War-era defense industry. Growth slowed quite a bit in recent decades. When I moved here in 1998, the state's luster already had tarnished—and many Californians had already been building their dreams in Texas, Nevada, and elsewhere.
Nevertheless, the population still grew by a whopping 7 million people in the past 23 years. There are plenty of reasons for the recent drop. Immigration, which had soared by 37 percent in the 1990s, has slowed to a trickle. Birth rates, which had driven our modest gains in recent years, also have fallen—making up for the state's continued outmigration of residents. Coronavirus has taken its toll.
State officials predict a quick return to modest growth rates, but this isn't primarily a story about slight population changes. It's about a change in policy and attitudes. The latest news is a benchmark showing that California no longer is the magnet that it had been. Quite simply, California has morphed from a land of limitless opportunity to a highly regulated land of limits and control.
"All of a sudden I saw all these California books: diaries, memoirs, journals, histories, bibliographies," said the state's late historian Kevin Starr, as he explained what drew him back to California from Harvard. "(A) kind of enchantment overtook me, a kind of beguilement, a kind of reverie, definitely a physical reaction in the days that followed." How many Americans still feel that sense of enchantment?
Expect the usual blather from the usual suspects. Lawmakers will remind us that California remains the world's fifth-largest economy and that California's tech industry is booming—as evidenced by an astounding $75.7 billion budget surplus in the midst of the pandemic. Even the budgetary good news, though, hides an ugly truth.
Because of our steeply progressive income-tax structure, revenues don't reflect overall wellbeing as much as they spotlight the success at the top of the economic spectrum. Even before COVID-19, California had the highest poverty rates in the nation based on the Census Bureau's cost-of-living-adjusted standard. Last year, 135,000 more Americans left the state than came here. The California exodus is a real phenomenon.
If you are a regular reader of these editorial pages, you know about the state's myriad challenges (all of which predate the pandemic): median home prices of more than $750,000 statewide and above $1 million in some metro areas; an exploding homeless crisis; crumbling infrastructure; water shortages; lousy public schools; growing crime rates; and various governmental scandals.
Every one of these problems is the result of long-standing state policy. You'll rarely hear a state leader talk about opportunity—or admit that California has been actively chasing people away. It remains a great place to live, but only for those who already have achieved their dreams. The weather's nice, but the political climate is chilling—even if the governor remains in denial.
Population statistics are now finally catching up with reality. So, sure, the state's first population drop in a century doesn't change anything of substance—but it should change the way Californians view ourselves. We've gone from "California dreaming" to "California leaving" and all the budget surpluses in the world won't fix it.

Huh?
California is exactly what we Koch / Reason libertarians want every state to look like. Our open borders agenda will eventually guarantee all 50 states have CA's best features — high degree of racial diversity, profound economic inequality, and single-party Democratic government.
Keep it up King

The Kochs supported Democrats? News to me.
"Expect the usual blather from the usual suspects"
Count yourself among them asshole
It’s like strudel set himself up on purpose with that one.
Stupidity explains a lot about that lefty shit.
Like Greenhut pretending he's not taking a victory lap?
As long as the people staying are part of the problem, there is no problem.
Unfortunately, a whole bunch of the people leaving are part of the problem they created in California and they are shitting on their new home now.
"[WE] will conquer and consume", The Democratic Party who loves using Gov-Guns for everything they want just like every criminal does.
California refugees here are in Idaho are registering Republican. Those who I know are well to the right of the native Idahoans, few of whom have ever lived in a Democratic state.
GlockStore, which I believe is in San Diego, recently opened a second location in Tennessee. I imagine they will eventually close down the location in Cali.
I'm kind of surprised they hadn't left 10+ years ago.
Boy, I can't wait until the rest of the country is turned into California.
Yup, GOODBYE Cali and HELLO Texas.
They move because of money and overcrowding - but they DO NOT leave their leftish/progressive values.
It's going to be fun watching Texas turn SOLID blue.
Weird seeing someone cheer on locusts as the heroes of the story.
Ah yes I love seeing so-called libertarians criticizing other Americans for exercising their right to move freely within our country and reside in whatever state they choose.
If you guys were in charge, you’d probably enact unconstitutional state by state immigration rules.
And where did I do that? Say they couldn't move?
Stating that they destroy growth of a locality and then moving elsewhere to repeat their actions elsewhere isnt saying tbey can't move. It is calling out their actions.
I take it you're a locust.
Jdromb is clearly a student of the Sarcastr0 school of straw man argumentation.
Their right to move is not at issue; it's their habit of bringing along the same voting patterns that made moving necessary in the first place.
I'm all for the ones who leave and are clear as to why, with no desire to repeat the scenario. Immigration must first benefit the host location. Escaping over there by coming over here is not a solution if you then proceed to turn over here into over there.
"Escaping over there by coming over here is not a solution if you then proceed to turn over here into over there."
If that is original you deserve your own meme. I am going to keep that one.
the tragedy of the commons
My real time work with face book I am making over $2000 a month operating low maintenance. I continued hearing distinctive people divulge to me how an lousy lot cash they can make on line so I selected to research it. All topics considered, it become all legitimate and has without a doubt changed my life.

Ah yes; I love seeing complete dumbsh*ts pretend lefty CA didn't lobby to cancel everyone's rights and push to enact Nazism (def; National Socialism) all in the name of 'equality' just like Hitler did and then point their fingers at anyone else.
That lefty "right" to take over the USA for Nazism isn't part of the U.S. Constitution.
Wow - that is a really, really stupid comment.
Nobody is decrying the right of people to move wherever they damn well please. What is absurd, is that these people voted for all the stuff that made California unpalatable, so they leave, and will then vote again for the same stuff. Kind of speaks to that definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.
It has nothing to do with anyone's right to free egress, but rather how fucking stupid they are; unable to connect the dots at all. But these are your peeps.
Actually the ones moving aren't leftie shits like you.
Far too many are though... I've got family running away from their sh*tholes only to pretend their sh*thole isn't a direct result of their sh*tty ideology. Their "emotional" triggered ignorance level is off the charts.
California isn't even SOLID blue you retard.
When is the last time it voted red?
It's been a while, but you may actually see it happen again. Most of the state is "red" (I still don't understand how people whose politics are actually Red are called "blue").
This is the same dumbass logic that people use to act like corporations are people. They're not. And California doesn't vote. The people in California do. Who are not all leftist crack pots. Is preschool over yet?
That's true but there is voter fraud in Cali. Somehow I managed to vote in the 2016 Dem. primary but they somehow lost my ballot for the 2016 general election when I voted for Johnson. Both times were in the correct place just three blocks from my home but when I looked online only my vote in the primary was recorded. Yeah, it's all above board so long as you vote the right way.
That's why I left Cali. I obviously don't vote correctly.
It’s going to be fun watching Texas turn SOLID blue.
sure, what could be more fun than watching places turn to shit so that a few self-indulgent people can own the cons.
People who leave California for red states tend to be conservative. That’s why they are moving.
It's not prog v con that created the problems in CA. It's pretty much everyone over-50 or so who created the problems in CA.
I always do enjoy your fact free narratives.

Conservative in California means you're progressive not communist.
Not so. Although the Democratic Party has the legislature sewn up, especially since passage of the "open primary" system, California is home to very conservative areas (Orange County, Sacramento area). Hell, California is the birthplace of the John Birch Society, the home of the Nixon and Reagan Presidential libraries, and has John Wayne Airport.
Using things from decades ago doesn't actually help your argument white Mike.
I've met hundreds of CA immigrants in my state/city. Haven't met a single one that was "conservative"... They just keep tooting their horns about Gov-Guns have to do this and Gov-Guns have to do that.
Either you're just living in a land of delusion or my own experience is of a minority.
I continue to see more and more CA plates as summer gets closer. Real estate has nearly doubled since Covid, and there's construction everywhere. How the migrants vote is yet to be seen.
If CO is an indicator - the voting changes will be:
1. create a shut-the-door-now feudal mindset among homeowners. Maybe it will be via zoning or prop tax exemptions or somesuch but it will happen. It will be caused by those who jacked up the housing prices because they were homeowners in CA. The effect will be to freeze their own prop taxes while being free to jack up taxes on someone else and increase spending pressures when that takes place. Provide a free lunch mindset - not from the bottom but from the top.
2. Eliminate the ability for members of political parties to decide for themselves how they will run themselves. It will be done in the name of allowing independents a voice. The effect will be for political party establishments to be taken over by the utterly corrupt and for everything to be run behind the scenes.
3. Drown the ballot in shitty poorly-worded initiatives/referenda where the effect is to hogtie and then later corrupt the legislature and force everything into a mass-market top-down us v them electioneering mindset that can then be dominated by pollsters/media/consultants/donorclass and all the other top-downers.
Western states are really vulnerable to all this anyway. Which is why Californians are not trying to change the Midwest or the South. And the CA doing this stuff are not 20-somethings just dealing with the result of a shitty CA. They are the 50+ somethings who created the problems in CA and are looking to re-create the same problem elsewhere.
And the CA doing this stuff are not 20-somethings just dealing with the result of a shitty CA. They are the 50+ somethings who created the problems in CA and are looking to re-create the same problem elsewhere.
"Don't Californicate Colorado" has been a thing since the 70s, and you're right that the migrants themselves tend to be middle-aged residents with a rather over-developed sense of entitlement as to how these western states should be run. That applies to both the conservative AND liberal-voting factions.
As a semi-aside - you folks in Idaho already started heading down the path of party corruption on #2 above. In 2015, R's passed legislation creating both a state-funded 'beauty contest' presidential-preference primary and an organizational party caucus in prez election years. In 2020, D's just did away with the caucus for prez candidates. R's will do that soon - where caucuses (unattended by all but the corrupted) will become the way parties organize themselves internally while primaries become the 'show' event. Next step after that is that local politics becomes irrelevant/corrupt and issues all get framed as a national referendum on this and that.
Yet to be seen? I live in AZ and it's crystal clear what happens. Democrats keep voting for the same bullshit they always do. I am a MI native. People fled Detroit after Cavanagh raised taxes and went into the Wayne County burbs. They continued voting Democrat and MI is in ruin.
Makes it sound like California is the only place Covid happened.
The first rule of California is: You don't talk about anything but California.
I thought that was the first rule of Boston?
And NYC, and DC, and Miami,....
So has the US as a whole. Most Americans can't leave, but you can be certain that skilled immigrants are going to come less and less. Fear not, the US will still get unskilled migrants by the millions.
People are leaving California for one main reason: because of how expensive it is. And it’s expensive because nearly every single tech company is located there, incomes are sky high, schools are very good, and the weather is good.
In other words, it’s a victim of its own success.
Articles that try to tie migration to Texas and Arizona as a response to various policies are totally dishonest and nonsense. It’s cheaper to live in those states than CA - that’s it.
"And it’s expensive because nearly every single tech company is located there, incomes are sky high, schools are very good, and the weather is good."
The weather is mostly very good. True
The schools pretty much suck, though there are worse ones around. The State college system is pretty good.
Incomes are high, but taxes on that income are through the roof; utility costs are to the moon, as are rents, even in areas where wages are not high. How else does the government collect a record bonus during a pandemic when a significant percentage of it's population is unemployed?
These are the reasons CA had the highest poverty rate in the nation. IIRC, just pre-Covid, they actually worked their way up to next-to-worse.
I lived there for near fifty years. Until the 1980's it was pretty good. It started deteriorating then, and by the nineties, the handwriting was on the wall. I still had family there, as did my wife, and a good job, so I stayed.
CA hasn't been the "Golden State" for several decades.
First visited in the late 1970s and briefly considered moving there. California was glorious to an East Coast boy. Last time I was there in early 2000s, it had changed radically (except for scenery) and had little appeal.
+
If builders were allowed to build, things would be different.
come for the jobs and salaries, stay for the rolling blackouts and illegals.
It’s cheaper to live in those states than CA – that’s it.
As if that magically occurred without any political hands being involved.
Don't forget the crazy homeless people, fires, meth-heads and earthquakes.
The bums and the fires are products of gov't policies: Cities reward bums with free housing, and the fires are a result of poor forest management.
Quite a bit of that management was formerly provided by the logging companies before they got chased out.
^THIS line of comments +100000000000000000....
Let me get this straight "Jdromb" -- CA is the largest per-area state only preceded by AK and TX in the USA and your going to pitch the story that it's out-grown all of its room???? Holy crap UR stupid.
Shall we pretend all those 'federal lands' (actually Gov-Stolen and UN-Constitutional Communist land) don't exist and that stupid Tree-huggers are hoarding the entire USA out of some B.S. chicken-little the "sky is falling down" excuse?????
Every sane person looks at lefties with a little bit of chuckle about their stupidity and a lot of resentment when stupidity meets Gov-Guns -- People aren't born to be this stupid; this kind of stupidity has to be indoctrinated.
So youre just going to ignore the state and local taxes, regulatory costs, and other costs imposed by government and voters that cause the cost of living?
Good work ignoring democrats are at fault. One way to keep repeating your actions in new areas.
This is a simplification, but I think it stands. Get beyond the surface and there are essentially two kinds of people in this country, maybe the whole world.
Those who want to be left alone and leave others alone, and those who want everyone to live in their village and do as they think you should.
And if you do not of the first group, you are not libertarian.
There’s a third group - if you WANT to live in the village, follow the village rules. But you don’t have to live in this village (or any village) if you don’t want to.
>> and those who want everyone to live in their village and do as they think you should.
Sounds like the religious right.
I'll take holy rollers any day over the woketards.
Of course! The only reason anyone might consider leaving California is how expensive how awesome it is makes it! Surely, that's the reason Joe Rogan, Ben Shapiro and....Elon Musk can't afford to live in California.
Schools aren't even open now in much of CA. It's ridiculous to claim schools are good.
You sound like a member of the tech aristocracy, living in your little ultra-wealthy enclave. Objectively, California is one of the worst states in terms of school quality, poverty, inequality, infrastructure, commute times, taxes, and homelessness.
Quality of life has decreased dramatically even in the nicest places. Outdoor living used to be a big part of California life, but between sprawl, traffic jams, and ridiculous regulations and restrictions, it will take your hours to get to a place where you can enjoy nature.
Even worse yet is that the state has been flooded with bigots and racists, intolerant of anybody who doesn't buy into their political orthodoxy. In San Francisco, these radical young leftists (mostly straight) have destroyed gay neighborhoods, destroyed gay institutions, and destroyed gay communities.
+ + + + I’m a native son of Mountain View currently living next door in Sunnyvale. Just commuting from Sunnyvale to Palo Alto ( Mountain View’s next door neighbor on the other side) has become an obscenely draining ordeal. I was truly blessed to have been born and raised in an upper middle class hundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars environment with much to recommend. I am now cursed to be stuck in a multi—MULTI-million-dollar SHIT HOLE! And yes, the homeless plague has hit us. What is horrifying is to listen to them and realize how many are, like me, part of a vanishing breed-LOCALS!!
I have a friend who commutes from one town in the Bay Area to another that it only 20 miles away. It takes him less time to drive miles the wrong way, climb into his small plane, then fly to an airport several miles past his actual destination and ride a motorcycle to from there to work than it does on days when he has to drive from home to job.
He rode the motorcycle to work one time. Even lane filtering (legal in CA), it took way too long, and he said he almost got killed a couple of times by tired, distracted drivers. Going the wrong way has him with the light traffic both ways.
I worked at Stanford Medical Center (outdoor, part of the parking service) a young guy I helped train told me that he did a trial run to work from his home in Menlo Park (The OTHER side of Palo Alto, supposedly commuter traffic would be friendlier) in his car, then did the same experiment using his bicycle. Guess what? Bicycle was faster!! Oh, OH and I saved the best for last—he did this experiment on a SATURDAY!!!
It amazes me how entitled many motorcyclists are on the freeways. They have a part-the-fucking-red-sea-of-brake-lights-for-me-or-else Moses complex. You take the risk you take the consequences. In boating you learn that vessels you overtake have the right of way...
Can I hire one of these tech people to mow my lawn?
I’d settle for techies serving me my dinner!—posted from Sunnyvale, CA
You call someplace paradise, kiss it goodbye.
People vote with their feet and the clueless respond with "look at the size of the economy here," as if that is creation of leftist govt. Not that long ago, CA had two viable parties and didn't treat citizens like subjects.
The size of the economy is largely due to 2 huge industries which made CA home about 100 years ago. The movie industry started in Hollywood and that Hewlett Packard started Silicon Valley in Palo Alto. The leftist government is doing their best to destroy both the movie and tech industries in CA but it takes a while.
California has two more huge industries: aerospace in Southern California and agriculture throughout the state.
The Federal government General. Don't forget the federal government.
Take all the defense industries, the federal agency offices, tourism related to federal parks, etc out of that 5th largest economy, and see what is actually CA economy.
Alot of filming has moved from Hollywood to British Columbia. (insert obligatory anti-canadian joke towards ml here
I don't think that Hollywood really did that much for the California economy. The entertainment industry was centered in the Thirty-Mile Zone, with little influence outside of walking distance from the studios, even during the height of its power.
California's primary economic power was agricultural and the seaports until WWII both led to a boom in manufacturing and putting a couple of million soldiers through the state. After the war, many of those men came back to settle.
And no, the leftist government isn't trying to kill those industries, they are simply trying to keep them under control.
"And no, the leftist government isn’t trying to kill those industries, they are simply trying to keep them under control."
I'll somewhat agree that they aren't trying to kill Hollywood and Big-Tech, but the reason is because they are all in bed together to fuck everyone else through indoctrination/propaganda and spying/data collection, respectively.
California manufacturing employment has fallen from over two million in the 1990s to barely above one million. The number should be around 10 million for a modern state of that size.
Left bay area in Dec 2020 after 35 yrs and still pinching myself that I'm finally outta there.
Congrats on your defection.

Californians are an invasive species. Suck the life out of their habit and then move to salt the earth elsewhere.
The California Exodus Is Real... It is also sad and a little scary. These same liberal idiots will insist on the same things they fled California over in their new home States.
This old adage fits moving Californians:
‘The Difference Between Stupidity And Genius Is That Genius Has Its Limits’
Honestly, I didn't think there was any chance in hell Reason would mention this news, which broke weeks ago.
If you think the exodus is bad now, you've seen absolutely nothing yet. Wait until they've just about sucked Lake Mead and the Colorado River almost completely dry. When that comes to pass, it's pretty much all over for those fuckers in southern California.
"a demographic reversal caused by the deadly toll of the coronavirus and" . . The deadly toll of the coronavirus? Really? Just how much did the total annual deaths in California change in the last year, on a per-100,000 basis? Approximately no change at all?
From 2007-2020, 8-10 million moved out of California, with approximately 10% of these within the last 24 months.
The effect of this (and let's not forget the New Yorkers, New Jerseyeans, Illinoisans, Michiganders and Bostonians who, like malignant cancerous cells, have been overtaking and overwhelming healthy cells in other states)?
Nevada: a red state, turned blue;
Colorado: a red state; turned blue;
Arizona: a red state that is on life support, in danger of irreversible blue malignancy;
Georgia: a red state that is indefinitely purple, and has one election cycle to save itself from irreversible blue malignancy;
Idaho: Unprecedented inflation, especially in Boise;
Texas: 300 (and probably more) Californians moving there daily;
And my state, Florida, is being invaded by THOUSANDS of Democrats, monthly. Contact me if you're in FL; I'll send you info about a PAC here entitled: SOSS: Save Our Sunshine State.
The Democrats invading our state WILL VOTE DEMOCRAT on game day (Election Day). Why? Because malignant cancerous cells will ALWAYS seek to outnumber, overtake and overwhelm healthy cells, whether in FL, TX---or wherever.
"Vote blue, no matter who, no matter what" is the name of their delusional death cult.
No other human being understands better than I the political ramifications of migration into FL, and migration, overall, nationwide. By my calculations (both utilizing known data, but also my own projections and research), there are anywhere from 8,000 (very, very low end) to 15,000 (high end, but also possibly more) GUARANTEED Democrat voters moving to FL monthly. And you must multiply this by 24 (low end) to 30 (high end) months (because I’m future-proofing the projection to the 2022 elections).
In post WW2 (and maybe earlier) America, every city and/or state that experienced moderate to heavy migration always turned purple (could go red or blue), purple/trending blue, or irreversibly blue---there is NO EXCEPTION to this.
The Republican Party of FL KNOWS that the vast, vast majority of those moving here will never, ever vote Republican---just as they never, ever voted Republican in CA, NY, NJ, NV, CO, IL, GA, AZ, MI, WI, PA, LA, NC, MN, KS and KY.
Good post. It is useful to remember that DeSantis won by about 30-40 thousand votes over a guy who was later found passed out with a dead male hooker...
"Don't be Malignant" exhibits classic deceit by omission. She quotes out-migration figures without mentioning in-migration. According to data from the American Community Survey, from 2007 to 2016, about 5 million people moved to California from other states, while about 6 million left California, for a net out-migration of 1 million.
5 million from other States or other Countries?
Other states. Reference: https://lao.ca.gov/LAOEconTax/Article/Detail/265
Go ahead and diss California. Sure, we have bad roads, bad schools, very expensive housing, human fecal material over the streets of San Francisco, the highest energy prices in the country, but what makes up for all of this is that we have the highest taxes too.
We all know that with high taxes we will get the government we deserve, and we got it - good and hard.
Bureaucracy is an organization that gives you less than you paid for, but more than you want.
That is a great line- consider it stolen. Thanks.
"It remains a great place to live, but only for those who already have achieved their dreams.”
That’s a pretty good summary. CA doesn’t offer as much opportunity for younger people, especially if they aren’t a lawyer, techy or hedge fund manager. Being in CA was good for me and I did well, but I’m now older and retired and so able to enjoy the weather and nice scenery. Perhaps a declining population will make for less traffic. Perhaps also one day my kids will inherit enough so that they can live in their 50s as we were able to live in our 30s. If you aren’t so lucky to have parents who might leave you the old house (especially if you are minority), well then Texas beckons. Is that a progressive success story or what?
When I have visited CA, I could totally understand why post WW II everyone migrated there. Beautiful weather, beautiful scenery.
And even with all the inherent advantages, they managed to turn it into a shithole.
Well done.
It's mildly amusing to hear cons moaning about the poor quality of public schools and blaming it on "the libruls". Only 1 of the Top 10 states for best schools is a Red State. Only 1 of the Bottom 10 states for worst schools is a Blue State. Reference: https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/education/prek-12
Even more amusing is anyone looking to U.S. News & World Report for unbiased facts:
Here are the 10 states with the highest SAT scores:
1: Minnesota (1,295)
2: Wisconsin (1,291)
3: Iowa (1,276)
4: Missouri (1,271)
5: Kansas (1,260)
6: North Dakota (1,256)
7: Nebraska (1,254)
8: Kentucky (1,247)
9: Mississippi (1,241)
10:Utah (1,238)
BTW, California average score is 1,055; which puts it #39.
Right, because a single cherry-picked test score on a test that school districts devote huge amounts of preparation for far outweighs the 5 factors ranked in the US News study. Maybe you should be really impressive and quote high school prom attendance figures, too.
So, when presented with new information, you deflect and say that it doesn't count. Typical proglydyte.
Yeah, and then those people from North Dakota come here to go to school at Berkeley at Stanford at CalTech. I wonder why they don’t go to North Dakota State University.
Even more amusing to see lefty shits lying one more time.
Even more amusing to see Sevo using intellect equivalent to that of a garden snail to participate in a discussion among adults.
"From a real-world perspective, the recent news from the California Department of Finance isn't really a big deal."
This is true if you assume the welfare dependents staying and the productive people leaving are economically equivalent. I don't.
I think the wormed turned when Reagan amnestied 4 million illegals, most of them in California. The Clintons made it a priority to register as many as they could. California ,except for San Francisco, was considered largely conservative. L.A was sometimes considered right wing. The last conservative governor, George Deukmejian, left in 1991. Ahnold doesn't count.
There's a couple of ways to judge if you are getting good Californians or bad Californians. Are trendy restaurants, hip art galleries, or quirky boutiques sprouting up? The rot is settling in. Are you in any group of white people and the conversation drifts to the need to have more diversity and inclusion? Get your gun.
Biden voters go forth and multiply. Maybe the Reason Offices will leave as well.
Don't live behind the Orange Curtain!

Frankly I do not give a damn what Californian's do as long as they do it in their own state. But the virtue signaling scum that leave simply transport their disease across borders. The same authoritarian zeal imposed by the dictators of the plandemic should be imposed on Californians, New Yorkers, as well as those from IL and NJ. They should be forced to marinate in the muck they created rather than seek an easy exit to a new locale like an alcoholic seeking a change of scenery when the shite starts to hit the fan.
surprised I have not seen a question of the underlying premise, that CA has a budget surplus. I call BS. Total fake news by newsome to try to stay in office. Remember when Brown was in, woe about budget deficits, state in peril, on and on, to try to get support to raise taxes, especially on businesses. Then, magically, just as he was leaving office...there was a huge budget surplus. OMG, golly gosh, what a great gov! (sarcasm dripping.) So here we have newsome, after wailing and moaning about needing relief from covid, and so desperate for money from the feds...and now, voila! as he is being recalled, declares the state is doing great under his leadership, budget surplus, oh my, what a guy! And wasn't there an article earlier this week, claiming CA has sent out, in the last few months, some 49 million (!) checks, and they cannot account for them, don't know who they went to, what they were for, and have no system to track them?
Look, the reason their population loss has appeared so minimal has nothing to do with covid deaths, those have been a point-some-number-of-zeros-one-or-two affect, actually culled from normal death numbers, and clearly, if you look closely, offset by the zero deaths in this period from seasonal flu. Apparently covid cured seasonal flu.
The other effect has been their open borders sucking in so many illegals, and then calling them "undocumented," as if now they are part of the legal population. They let, encourage, them to vote and if they do not, then the dems vote for them. Without this illegal subculture CA would have lost at least 2-3 more representatives from the census.
Simple. It is a dem utopia. Lots of fantastically rich people who laugh about how "caring" they are over their cocktails, give little to nothing to charity, vote to have remaining middle class pay (through taxes) for all the goofy things they think are important, like thinking they can control the climate of the globe. The rest are homeless or live in dem slums, do menial if any work, stay stupid from the schools that are stopping teaching anything but blather like CRT. Article this week pushing to stop teaching math as racist. Keep going, CA, anyone who falls for this, and CA will, is just proving Barnum right.
And for those who wail that CA is essentially red? By geography, but not by people. All the red farmers and ranchers in the state cannot outvote one dem slum whose votes have been harvested for them.
Sad, really.
Good. Let’s keep California weird and also running a 78 billion dollar surplus.
If we think that underpopulation is a problem in California (and I don’t) maybe we should let immigrants who want to work here come and live here.
Good. Let’s keep California weird and also running a 78 billion dollar surplus.
Funny how all these "surpluses" keep coming from sources other than actual revenue.
Perhaps other states should institute a 30 year quarantine for incoming Californians.

"a great place to live, but only for those who already have achieved their dreams". A reasonable description of any socialist location.
