Soul

Pixar's new movie shows that happiness is more complicated than just pursuing the one thing you love the most.

Dozens upon dozens of animated features have encouraged viewers to chase their dreams, but few have focused on setting realistic expectations. Pixar's Soul breaks the mold by showing that happiness is more complicated than just pursuing the one thing you love the most.

Aspiring jazz musician Joe (Jamie Foxx) finally catches his break as he approaches midlife, only to fall through a manhole and die. Rather than accepting his death, he flees into a quirky cosmic bureaucracy, inadvertently being paired with a stubborn soul (Tina Fey) who refuses to be born into a body in the first place, having been overly pressured to decide in advance what her interests should be.

Their entertaining misadventures have a familiar carpe diem veneer, but the movie also shows that the bliss of success is often transitory, that it requires a lot of hard work, and that obsessing over your pursuits can be self-destructive rather than fulfilling. A spark can ignite a lifelong passion, but it shouldn't come at the expense of enjoying the totality of experience.

  1. I know there’s a delay involved with publication, but you need to stop publishing reviews 3-4 months after the release of the media. This was a Christmas movie.

    1. Seeing that the movie theaters here were closed when this came out, perhaps Disney will re-release it, especially since it has a great chance at an Oscar.

  2. I was bored with it. Maybe my tastes have changed.

    1. I too found it a tad boring on first watch. Not overwhelmingly so… Just a bit.

But like all Pixar films, it is finely crafted and richly detailed. “Maybe my tastes have changed”…. I identify with the sentiment. This is obviously an extremely high quality film with a very carefully built script. I am putting off the “I found it a little boring” on my mood that day. I have yet to rewatch, but experience tells me that after watching it a couple of times, I will find even more to enjoy.

I was a bit underwhelmed with Cars on first watch, and that is a great movie. I will predict that I find this film to be much better the second time through as well.

  3. So not Objectivist?

  4. Did you find the super-secret pro-life message in it?

  5. I liked absolutely everything in the Soul: the wonderful music, the sense in which it is filled with, and how easily we are presented with quite serious things. The cartoon is infinitely kind, sincere and deep. Children will definitely not understand it, but I think adults will definitely be touched to their hearts. And also this cartoon is very beautifully drawn, the visual perception is 100 out of 100.
