Why Are Members of Congress Trying To Ban the Importation of Kangaroo Meat?
Congress should rue the day it hopped on the kangaroo-meat ban.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jamin Raskin (D-Md.) don't see eye to eye on much. Gaetz lied about the Capitol riot. Raskin led the impeachment of the man who incited it. On perhaps just one issue, though, they speak with one voice. What issue is so vital that it has united such seeming polar opposites? The apparent need to ban the sale of kangaroo meat in the United States.
Indeed, Gaetz and Raskin have joined with a handful of other bipartisan sponsors to promote the Kangaroo Protection Act, which would "prohibit the sale of kangaroo products" in this country, including meat and leather, and the importation of the same.
Under the terms of the bill, which is at once a joke and deadly serious, violators could face prison time and steep fines for each violation.
While reporting that Australia opposes the ban strenuously—the country exports around $80 million of kangaroo products to the U.S. every year—the Sydney Morning Herald also notes that a "coalition of animal rights groups [is] behind the bill."
By sheer coincidence, the Kangaroo Protection Act also contains language that would establish a private right of action, meaning people—in this case, likely animal-rights supporters and groups—could file suit against alleged violators to uphold the law.
As the Herald also reports, one of the groups leading the charge to ban kangaroo meat in the U.S. is Animal Wellness Action, headed by Wayne Pacelle, the former head of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), who resigned from that group in 2018 in the face of allegations of sexual harassment made by several female HSUS subordinates.
Pacelle says he thinks the bill to ban kangaroo meat has legs. "It's an easy vote for Democrats certainly, and also for Republicans to show they are animal-welfare friendly," he told the Herald.
It may appear an easy vote if one were to consider the opinions only of animal-rights supporters. In an interview shared by Viva!, a UK-based animal-rights group that opposes selling or eating kangaroo meat, David Nicholls, a former kangaroo hunter, describes why he gave up the hunt.
"I began to realize the place of humans on the planet did not come with special and intrinsic rights to do at whim with it and the creatures on it," Nicholls says. "I slowly turned vegetarian and am now a fully-fledged vegan."
Nicholls's transformation from hunter to vegan is all well and good, but it's also about as relevant to whether or not kangaroo meat should be legal as is any other person's dietary preferences—mine and yours included. About as relevant, in fact, as the Australian movement known as "kangatarianism," which is like pescatarianism but with kangaroo meat subbing for seafood as the eater's sole animal protein of choice. All of which is to say that no one person's or group's dietary preferences should have a bearing whatsoever on the legality of any food.
While I don't usually reference Wikipedia, its entry for kangaroo meat does an exemplary job describing the many ways that eating kangaroo is common, humane, sustainable, and a key part of the diets of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who live on the continent.
"The commercial kangaroo industry offers a path for self-determination for Aboriginal people," Clayton Donovan, a leading indigenous Australian chef, told The Guardian this month. "And now another group of non-Indigenous are talking about taking it away entirely."
The proposed kangaroo ban comes as kangaroo meat is gaining in popularity in Australia, where it's valued as an "environmentally friendly alternative to beef and pork."
I've never had the good fortune to eat kangaroo. But Reason editor-in-chief Katherine Mangu-Ward, who has supped on roo, describes it as "outstanding… tender, extremely flavorful, appealingly rosy meat."
Sounds lovely to me.
"If you want to buy a Happy Meal with a horsemeat burger, a can of Four Loko, trans fat fried foie gras, and a side of shark fin soup, I applaud your right to make those choices," I once told the Washington City Paper. The rights of carnivores, omnivores, vegans, and kangatarians alike deserve the same applause—and protection.

Intolerant assholes (vegetarians and-or vegans and-or militant octo-lacto-ovo-boogero-shito-tarians what have you, in this case) are simply grabbing whatever excuse that they can find to outlaw whatever meats they can get away with outlawing!
What happens if they TOTALLY get their way?
Then there will be underground, makeshift, amateurish animal-killing-and-butchering shops, where the animals will be treated far less humanely than they are today! (Thank You shallow-understanding would-be Do-Gooders!!!)
You will not be able to let Fluffy or Fido wander through the bushes in your own back yard, for fear of meat-hungry lawbreaking pet-snatchers! (But, Meat-Hungry Lawbreaking Pet-Snatchers would make a MOST EXCELLENT name for a garage band!)

it is wrong for Katangan kangatarians to skewer vegans who refuse to toast Emperor Bokassa's health in Four Loco juice.

the Intolerant assholes originally were the ones who banned eating horse meat.
Sorry, I couldn’t read past the first TDS-addled sentence.
In the parlance I have seen here, TDS = Trump Derangement Syndrome, usually used by those with PRO-Trump-TDS attitudes, against those who supposedly have ANTI-Trump-TDS.
Well anyway, what does TDS mean in your context? Trump Derangement Syndrome as usual? Or something else?
If Trump Derangement Syndrome, then WHERE does Trump stand on, concerning militant octo-lacto-ovo-boogero-shito-tarians? Is He against eating meat, with the exceptions (milk-eggs-boogers-shit) listed? I humbly admit I have NO idea where Trump stands on these matters! All I know is that He insists that His Shit Doesn't Stink, and that we should all eat it!
Disregard this. I suck DNC cock.
And you eat shit, right?
A three-coiler a day, keeps you Trumpistas AWAY.

They can’t even help themselves! It’s not even relevant to the subject and the opinion wasn’t needed to juxtapose the differences.
The writers here are every bit of narcissists as they claim Trump is. In actuality, I think TDS cultists have a much bigger narcissism problem than Trump does.
Correct.
See sqrlsy as a prime example.
Doesn't try to communicate, doesn't care if anyone else understands a word he posts, doesn't engage with anyone who tries to get him into an actual conversation - just shits all over threads for self-gratification.
Can't get more narcissistic than that.
Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI... Have you now STOPPED calling for other posters to commit suicide? Can we get an APOLOGY out of you, for that? I have NEVER done THAT, have NEVER been that EVIL!!! Otherwise, if NO apology from your EVIL ass, for that, I am calling you an over-weeing hypocrite for criticizing ME for being the narcissist around here!
Oh, also, your frequent assertions that "your life has no value"... Because you DARED to disagree with Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI!
Just to fully inform readers here, especially NEW readers...
Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI is a Holocaust denier just like Rob Misek! (Another evil asshole who posts here). Two peas in a pod, Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI and Rob Misek are!
Does Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI deny what the NAZIs did? As Misek does? Perhaps not, I do not know HOW far Nadless’s evil goes! It might strut in front of a mirror wearing NAZI gear for all I know!
What I DO know is that Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI ignores the roots of NAZI, and other, evil, mass-murdering authoritarianism! Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI, like Hitler and the NAZIs and other evil authoritarians, starts out by assuming that Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI knows whose life is worthy, and whose is not! Then Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI moves on to sterilization and killing! It all starts out by denying the value of other human lives! And if Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI (and fellow NAZIs) can’t or won’t see and acknowledge that, Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI is a deluded and EVIL Holocaust denier, same as Rob Misek!
Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI and its fuckbuddy, Sexless Stranger-Strangler, also run around telling people to commit suicide! Even vaguely decent people don’t say things like that! Nor have they even THOUGHT about saying that to people! Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI is FUBAR (Fucked Up Beyond Repair). But if YOU, Dear Reader, are much like Nadless Nardzi the Nasty NAZI , then take stock of your SERIOUSLY FUCKED UP SOUL, Evil One Junior! Start by reading this: M. Scott Peck, the Hope for Healing Human Evil, https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684848597/reasonmagazinea-20/
For those of you who still doubt that I'm BATSHIT insane.
Nobody doubts that.
"They can’t even help themselves! It’s not even relevant to the subject..."
The writer of the article never once mentioned Trump or TDS. I didn't bring it up FIRST, either. It was an admirer of the Trumptatorshit who first brought up TDS! Let the shit fall on the heads of those who deserve it... Which, in this case, is those with PRO-Trump TDS, infected with worshipful attitudes towards the dead (and hopefully permanently extinct) Trumptatorshit!
"Sorry, I couldn’t read past the first TDS-addled sentence."
Same here. If the food guy is required to promote this crap, with a link to an NYT opinion piece no less, I have to believe that TDS is a non negotiable job requirement at Reason.
WHO was it who first mentioned TDS, hypocrite liar? It was a trumptard!!!!
Assholes will NEVER stop lying!
Then have some respect for yourself and stop frequenting this website.
I've been reading Reason since before Al Gore invented the internet. Used to buy it on a newstand on Hollywood Boulevard in the 80s. Had a paid subscription to the ink and paper version for years. My views haven't changed. Reason has changed into a parody of it's former self. Maybe it's like driving by a horrible crash. It's appalling but I can't help but stare.
I have been a Reason reader for just as long. Sorry, they haven’t gone down the Trump adoration road with you.

Labels (TDS) are often used to save people from thinking for themselves..
So let’s see the evidence for this label. I will present an Independents view because I dislike labels and BS on both sides (and there is much).
Some obviously you did not listen to Trump (and his enablers) pre and post election claims of election fraud, you did not hear about his lawyers losing over fifty cases in court alleging voting corruption, you do not trust the thousands of GOP election officials across the country in every region of every state certify their election results, or Trump’s attorney General, and his head of cyber security say the election was free and fair, or the Supreme Court refuse to hear Trump’s lawyers claim of election fraud, or the Georgia hand recount confirming their results. You didn’t know that Dominion voting machines have never been used in Canada and WERE used to count 70 million votes in 2016 when Trump won.. Nor did you observe how Fox, OAN etc backed off their claims about those machines when slapped with a major lawsuit because they know their accusations were unsupportable with facts and they would lose in court, costing millions of dollars. They revealed themselves as blatant propagandists in contrast to the more subtle propaganda of CNN and MSNBC.
Guess you didn’t hear Trump invite thousands to the Capital on Jan 6th to “Stop the Steal” nor his and his enablers description about what to expect, nor their speeches at his rally, nor his last lie that he would be there at the Capital building with them to protest.
So you don’t believe all these facts, nor your own eyes and ears, but you do believe the Minority of Senators, all GOP (but not even all of the GOP) who chose to stay on the gravy train rather than choose reality and the many echo chambers that repeat Trump’s biggest lie, despite their record of falsehoods (see Alex Jones apologizes in court about lying about Sandy Hook massacre). Did the lefties and their echo chambers let violent protesters off the hook, Yes. One does not excuse the other.
So many people have a strange way of defining reason and reality.
To be clear though, a ban on kangaroo meat would be stupid
So you agreed with my post, but just HAD to drag Trump into it! Because you LOVE fighting about Trump! To PROVE your Trump-loving virtues, to all your fellow-tribe members, fellow followers of the Trumptatorshit!
ALL wrong-think, on ANY topic... And even RIGHT-think for that matter, MUST be criticized, if it comes from a member of the WRONG tribe!
Do you EVER think with your modern, post-hunter-gatherer, rational, data-driven brain, ye of the Trumptatorshit Tribe?
In political discussions (especially on-line, in chat rooms and comments boards), many of us are familiar with “echo chambers” and “confirmation bias”. Also “projection” (if I am a jerk and act out of totally short-sighted self-interest, then I will assume that others are just like me). And many of us are tribalistic, nationalistic, ethnic-group, religious, or political-party chauvinists… My tribe good, yours bad! My violence good, yours bad! These things are fairly familiar to many of us.
What is NOT as well known, is “Do Gooder Derogation”, AKA “Antisocial Punishment”. It is counter-intuitive! Here, I’ll try to make it short: From https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20201016-why-some-people-are-cruel-to-others ... An out-take from there is as follows: “This phenomenon is called “do-gooder derogation”. It can be found around the world. In hunter-gatherer societies, successful hunters are criticised for catching a big animal
I am sure those mis-guided aboriginals will soon listen to vegan reason, and happily give up kangaroo and all other meat. They will then be as happy and healthy as the typical vegan's pet cat.
While I may prefer a vegan diet, believe me, my cats chow down on the very best cat food around, meaning lots of meat. Only an idiot, or someone very ill-informed, would think that a cat would thrive on a vegan diet. Cats are obligate carnivores.
So, a bunch of morons have hopped on yet another bandwagon?
Please don't insult morons.
Fair.
"Why Are Members of Congress Trying To Ban the Importation of Kangaroo Meat?"
Because there are no pressing social or economic problems that need addressing?
You know, out of the blue, the questions occur to me...
Kangaroos in Australia are NATIVE TO Australia, so therefor GOOD animals, so don't eat them, unless they are an "invasive species" (BAD species!) grown elsewhere? (They ARE on the loose in Great Britian; see https://theconversation.com/wallabies-are-on-the-loose-in-britain-and-weve-mapped-95-sightings-148374#:~:text=Wild%20wallabies%20continue%20to%20be,to%20them%20in%20recent%20years.)
Can we eat invasive RABBITS from Australia? Would THAT be OK?
Rabbits are NOT native to Australia, and they have run AMOK down under! Suppose they ever successfully interbreed with kangaroos!!! The results would be HOPPERS FROM HELL, with super-hopper-powers!!! If they ever learn to shop at the shopping malls, in long shopping lines for super-popular products, they'd super-hop the lines in front of us, and maul us at the malls!!!
The Aussies would have very little choice, other than to devise a GMO to go on the counter-attack...
MeThinks that such a GMO should be called the "Thunder from Down Under, Super-Mall-Mauling, Shopper Hopper Stoppers"!!!
Or maybe "Thunder from Down Under, Super-Mall-Mauling, Shopper Hopper Stopper Coppers" (Coppers with police powers).
The evolutionary arms race would be ON!!! To fight back against these "coppers", the Shopper Hopper Gang would need...
"Thunder from Down Under, Super-Mall-Mauling, Shopper Hopper Stopper Copper Stoppers"!!!
The counter-counter measure then becomes a device used by the coppers, to chop them all to pieces!
This, then, is known as the…
"Thunder from Down Under, Super-Mall-Mauling, Shopper Hopper Stopper Copper Stopper Chopper"!!!
...Popper Sopper Vopper Gopper Mopper Popper Pooper Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop Poop!!!!!!!!
Wow, how funny!!! Ya gonna give up your welfare check and become a stand-up comedian?
I'm not funny!!! They're funny because they're on welfare like Trump was. CORPORATE WELFARE for Nardz the Nazi Bazi Pazi Wazi! JesseBahnFuhererererer and Mamma the Moosefucker Canadian ate my welfare check telling me to take my medication. MEDICATION IS FOR TRUMPTATORSHIT TOMATO Trumptatorshit, but the blue pill gives me nightmares!
SQRLSY 0O0O0One capital "Oh" v/s "Zero" shows NO difference here, identity thief! Trumpanzees gone apeshit, Stalinists, Evil Ones, and Necrophiliacs ALL agree, identity theft is GOOD!
Evil One, do you think that you bring a GOOD name to the Evil One, your Master, through identity theft?
Well OK then, after testing, VERY little difference! But ya know what, Evil One? NON-Evil Ones are SMARTER THAN you are! (Which isn't very hard to do or be, smart-as-a-turd one).
The EVIL one made me take the pills that give me bad dreams about Tumpanzees in my bed eating NON-fecal dinners, but I outsmarted them and hid my pill under my tongue (Which wasn't very hard to do either, Trumpanstratorshit). "I began to realize the place of humans on the planet did not come with special and intrinsic rights to do at whim with it and the creatures on it," Nicholls says. "I slowly turned vegetarian and am now a fully-fledged vegan."
A lot of states used to have Sunday blue laws, where you couldn't open businesses on Sunday morning, when people should be at church, or sell alcoholic beverages on Sundays.
Progressives are the new Southern Baptists. The assumption that they should use government to force you to live by their religious beliefs is baked in so thoroughly, it doesn't need to be said.
Of course they want to impose their religious beliefs on the rest of us. That's what being progressive is all about, and that's why progressives are among America's most horrible people.
Progressives are the new Reactionaries.
"I began to realize the place of humans on the planet did not come with special and intrinsic rights to do at whim with it and the creatures on it," Nicholls says.
"Of course, 'the creatures on it' obviously do not include unenlightened humans."
Anybody else watch Steve Rinella and Meateater, which is now on Netflix?
There's an awful lot on that show about the ethics of hunting, and it's interesting to hear the hunters talk about the emotional response to killing an animal. Sometimes, you'll even see longtime hunters, grown men, break down and cry after they kill a buck or a moose. A lot of people seem to think that hunters become psychopaths after killing so many animals, but that show has made me realize that the hunters don't ever stop feeling empathy for the animals they're killing. Like a religious sacrifice of a lamb, the act of killing induces feelings of remorse.
The reason kids killing animals can be a sign that they're psychopathic is because they don't seem to feel that remorse. Real hunters develop all sorts of ethical standards around making sure they take a shot that won't leave an animal wounded, making sure they use the animals they kill, etc. in response to the responsibility they take and the remorse they feel for killing those animals. When they take a shot, the animal scurries off, and they're not sure it bled out and died because they can't find it, they feel like shit.
Surely, it's better to live in the wild as a buck or a kangaroo than to live on an industrialized farm as a pig or a chicken, but watching that show, it seems that the real ethical disconnect between farm raised meat and hunting is that people are divorced from the remorse for killing the animal when they don't kill the animal themselves. If there is anything unethical in this equation, it's not hunting wild animals. It's buying meat in a store that someone else killed for you--and feeling absolutely nothing like a psychopathic kid that kills the neighbor's cat.
If people come to imagine that eating animals has no ethical implications when they don't experience the remorse associated with killing animals firsthand, that makes the people buying farm raised meat in the store susceptible to charges of being psychopathic--not kangaroo hunters. They may be trying to justify the ban in terms of the ethics, but if they actually pass a bill banning the importation of kangaroo meat, I bet it's sponsored by political groups like cattle ranchers, pig farmers and others who don't want kangaroo meat displacing beef and pork in the diets of American consumers.
I’ve never understood some people’s disgust at hunting animals for food (doing it for sport is another matter) while they have no problem eating animals that were farmed.
After watching the show, I don't really buy the distinction between people hunting out of necessity, at least not versus buying farmed meat in the store. If hunters don't really need to hunt for food anymore, average consumers don't really need to buy meat in the store anymore either, when they could buy beans and corn instead.
I think there's an ethical responsibility associated with not letting an animal that you killed go to waste.
I love the outdoors. I was an avid backpacker, and if I were into any kind of hunting, it would probably be upland game birds--pheasant, quail, and birds like that--because 1) I can handle the emotional reaction of killing birds easier than deer or bear and 2) because I love dogs. Working with a dog like that would be a ton of fun.
In other words, I'm not sure it's wrong to enjoy the experience of hunting as a sport as well as using the animals you kill, but intentionally ending a life and using it for no constructive purpose would seem to make me a force for senseless destruction in the world, which isn't something anyone should associate with having ethics.
Might consider distinguishing the importance of hunting as pest control. Coyotes, 'coons, etc can be real pests, and unless local lockers will take the pelts, they're effectively killed without any use.
I'd argue that is an example sport hunting that is ethically valid in the name of land stewardship.
I'm sure that's true! There are more purposes than just to eat their meat. I understand beavers can foul your drinking water and people make genuinely useful things out of their pelts.
I know someone who was raised vegetarian, grows much of his own food in a garden, and had a real problem with rabbits. He got an English shepherd to help chase them off, but it eats rabbits--the bones, the fur, the whole thing! This guy might as well shoot the rabbits and eat them himself.
There's probably nothing more ecologically sound than eating rabbit. I doubt there's ever been a shortage of them, and they can be a pest in your vegetable garden. Still, to be honest, I'd have to get pretty hungry before I could skin one myself because they're so soft and cuddly. I've cleaned plenty of fish. I could clean a grouse if I knew how. Gutting Thumper would give me nightmares for weeks.
I knew a woman who lives in Scotland and was anti-hunting. She had an amazing collection of exotic chickens--right up until a fox got to them and killed them all for fun.
There's certainly more that's useful about hunting than just eating the meat.
Gotta get our top hat supply somewhere.
I like knowing there's still a place in America for rugged individualism, even if my idea of going off grid has more to do with solar panels, satellite communications, and a high-tech composting toilet.
Also, I remember an episode of Meateater, when they were hunting caribou in Alaska. They were quoting numbers from the biologists who had studied the herd they were hunting, and I can't recite the exact numbers from memory. To the larger point, however, it went something like--of the 40,000 caribou in this herd, 4,000 are taken by wolves every year, another 2,000 by grizzlies, and 1,000 by hunters. That really put things in perspective.
If we protected that caribou herd from one species of predators (homo sapiens), the herd would by no means be safe from other predators. Caribou have been prey in that Alaskan food chain since long before the first humans came across the land bridge.
For some reason, people tend to anthropomorphize animals and feel more empathy for animals than they do for people. I have a working hypothesis for why they do that--having to do with the uncanny valley. Regardless of why, I'm not sure there's anything fundamentally different about Steve feeding his kids with caribou meat than there is with wolves feeding their cubs.
Around here, the Forestry Service regularly puts out updates on which areas need deer culled. Over-population among deer herds is a real thing and if hunters don't take the deer, they'll over-browse and wind up starving to death. Starvation is not a good way to go. I wonder if that might be a similar problem in Australia with the kangaroo.
I understand that's actually why they started the harvesting. They used to just cull the kangaroos to cut the population down and leave the bodies for the dingos or to rot. My guess is ethical folks got together and lobbied for principled, humane, and useful wildlife management instead of just handing out pot-shot permits when the count got too high. If the fools are successful passing bills like this one around the globe the Aussies will likely have to revert to the old less humane style or worse.
Meateater is fantastic. More people should watch it. As a non hunter you certainly get it. The killing part is the unfortunate bit between the unparalleled pleasures of finding and surprising a wild animal and eating it. I live for it.
And yes if you are going to give it a go bird hunting is a great choice. Much better chances for success and a lot less overall time / money commitment than big game. Dogs that know what they are doing are awesome but not strictly necessary. I've been doing fine without until my two great but useless dogs pass on and I can start properly.
The time/money aspect is why I always choose fishing over hunting as my "predatory" outdoor sport. It's just so convenient to keep a fishing pole in your vehicle and pull over by a river or lake whenever the urge strikes you. With a few notable exceptions, most areas are open to fishing year-round. The license is generally a lot cheaper too.
It’s the reaction of a hypocrite who likes to be thought of as too pure to kill, but has no problem paying someone to do his killing for him.
"Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jamin Raskin (D-Md.) don't see eye to eye on much. Gaetz lied about the Capitol riot. Raskin led the impeachment of the man who incited it."
Apparently the TDS treatment isn't working. The only cure now is a libotomy.
So the writer, correctly, feels that someone’s dietary preferences should be irrelevant in this issue, but he thinks that Aborigines’ quest for self-determination is relevant?
Kangaroo is to Australia as deer is to everywhere else.
That is, big adorable animal that can really fuck up your car and your garden, breeds like crazy in the least convenient places, and is good eating.
Whether kangaroos also harbor lots of tick-borne diseases, I don't know.
Covered in them as I remember so I'm sure that's the case.
Don’t let facts get in your way. We choose “truth” over facts. Karens of the world unite. Ban ingestion of meat by everybody (and everything, too). Your dog can learn to love arugula when they get hungry enough, and cats like kale even more than catnip. And, come to think about it, why should you be allowed to “own” a dog or a cat. Train them to eat vegan{s} and let them go free (feral).
Why the fuck is reason still lying about incitement of a riot? The same reason that refused to cover riots all last year and won’t cover people denied bail for riots if they’re right of center.
This place is a travesty but also likely to be cancelled at some point by the isp or hosting provider. I’m out of here.
"I’m out of here."
I sure hope so! Don't let the door smack your sanctimonious far-right ass!
I bet you'll be back under a new name, sad to say... Could you make it an HONEST name next time? Like, say, Fascist Asshole?
If I saw a herd of kangaroos rioting I would sure as hell get out of the way too. Those things can mess you up good.
That's why they call them a "mob" or kangaroos!
(A group of kangaroos (usually ten or more roos) is known as a mob, troop, or court, says The Google, and The Google Knows ALL!!!!)
Reason did cover the mostly peaceful protests, even when they intensified.
I saw that it is one of those healthy alternatives because low fat and high protein. As Roberta said breeds like crazy so very sustainable from an environmental viewpoint.
I found there are some farms here that sell kangaroo meat.
I think all wild meat is pretty much low fat. To make them fat, you have to pay them not to work.
the best soccer boots are made of kangaroo leather....
good folks are gonna have to go to Canada to acquire the tools for their trade
As I cited below, Mother’s Lament’s country, always ahead of us in nanny statism, has already banned import of kangaroo meat.

Just saw another journalist on here reflexively dismiss a biracial person’s comments on race by calling them “some white dude.” The frequency this happens to every biracial (or just light skinned) reporter & activist I know is insane. How do people not know better by now?
Once again, the color of your skin is the most important thing ever.
That wasn’t her point at all.
At the risk of white-knighting, I think she's onto something despite her overuse of emojis -

If you want good freedom, you don’t want to live in Canada, where imported ‘roo meat has already been banned:

“Canada has also banned the importation of kangaroo meat.”
Well, you tried, White Knight... and that's the important thing.
Thanks, SQRLSY!

"I began to realize the place of humans on the planet did not come with special and intrinsic rights to do at whim with it and the creatures on it,"
And now, for an opposing view, I give you Genesis 1:28;
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.
I give you counter-point by Bill McKibben etc.!
Bill McKibben is an un-reformed, 200-proof, human-hating asshole!
“At its extreme, green ideology expresses itself in utter contempt for humanity. Reviewing Bill McKibben’s The End of Nature in the Los Angeles Times, National Park Service research biologist David M. Graber concluded with this stunning passage: ‘Human happiness, and certainly human fecundity, are not as important as a wild and healthy planet. I know social scientists who remind me that people are part of nature, but it isn’t true. Somewhere along the lineat about a billion years ago, maybe half thatwe quit the contract and became a cancer. We have become a plague upon ourselves and upon the Earth. It is cosmically unlikely that the developed world will choose to end its orgy of fossil-energy consumption, and the Third World its suicidal consumption of landscape. Until such time as Homo sapiens should decide to rejoin nature, some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along.’
“It is hard to take such notions seriously without sounding like a bit of a kook yourself. But there they arecalmly expressed in the pages of a major, mainstream, Establishment newspaper by an employee of the federal government. When it is acceptable to say such things in polite intellectual company, when feel-good environmentalists tolerate the totalitarians in their midst, when sophisticates greet the likes of Graber with indulgent nods and smiles rather than arguments and outrage, we are one step further down another bloody road to someone’s imagined Eden. All the greens need is an opportunity and a Lenin.”

Proggie brain is generally addicted to self-righteous and smug coercion of others. It is also self-destructive of humans generally, as noted above. Then it's also hypocritical, in that, if they REALLY believed that human life is a blight upon the planet, they'd just go off and commit suicide. But no, THEY personally aren't part of the blight; those people over THERE are the blight! So proggie brain is pretty stupid AND evil...
Contard brain, in SOME flavors (hyper-nationalism, militarism, self-righteous religion, exono-phobia, gayophobia, etc.) can be just as bad, I will admit that. Contards don't have as much "traction" (especially in media and academia) right now, THAT is the big difference!
Of course, a book written by Homo sapiens would say that.
If the Bible were truly written by an omniscient being He could have supplied more instruction to us:
- Tryest to treat the animals humanely. When thou queue up cattle for slaughter make sure the chutes have gentle curves that block the cattles’ view and make sure they aren’t startled by things like someone leaving a Coke can on the side of the chute. It will not only avoid spooking the animals but it will make your slaughter more efficient.
- Thou can eat swine, but make sure the meat is cooked to 145 degrees.
- Etc.
Before it becomes an anti-WK meme: cattle’s
I’m still drinking my coffee.
Because thermometers and cattle chutes existed for most of human history.
"I'm going to give some commandments on diet and animal husbandry that are only going to be doable 3200 years from now.
The Bible could have included instructions on how to do agriculture and build thermometers. God is omniscient, right?
Shouldn't the libertarian position be the problem with Jan. 6 is that the place wasn't taken down stone by stone?
No. There is nothing libertarian about our nation being thrown into chaos and civil war.
"Gaetz lied about the Capitol riot"
Baylen Linnekin lied about Gaetz lying about the Capitol riot.
Ah, our alpha Capitol riot denialist.
The only time the “rioters” stepped out from behind the velvet ropes were to give Brian Sicknick hugs and playfully try to gouge out another officer’s eye, just a little hillbilly joshin’.
“ The rights of carnivores, omnivores, vegans, and kangatarians alike deserve the same applause—and protection.”
Is this a libertarian position? This argument would imply that people should have the right in the US to farm and hunt cats and dogs. Personally I think anyone who farmed or hunted cats or dogs should receive up to the death penalty. The sort of argument the author is making reveals a profound ignorance or denial of the deep connection many humans can have with particular animals.
The whole quality of this argument is exhibited by the opening distorted reference to Trump, which has no relevance to this topic.
They humanely harvest the roos. If they cared about animal welfare, they would ban factory farms instead. But cows and pigs aren't "cute", so they don't care. Any Congressman who supports this legislation isn't a serious person.
It's all going to be a moot point anyway when we're all eating lab-grown kangaroo meat.
I attribute this to the cuteness factor. Kangaroos are cute and so we should not eat them. Rabbit, geese, deer are all cute but there also responsible for a lot of ecological destruction. Meanwhile the animals we should be worried about bats, frogs, worms, and snakes are going to extinction.
"Congress should rue the day it hopped on the kangaroo-meat ban."
Sigh, yeah that's right, that's what congress should be ashamed of right now.
We can be disgusted with Congress over more than one thing.
“including meat and leather”
Like hell you can have my kangaroo leather motorcycle gloves.
This article is amazing thank for sharing the post.

I'm very ashamed that Matt Gaetz is my Congressman. He's a bad joke.
Because pig and chicken farmers give far more to gifting politicians than do kangaroo exporters.
Kangaroo meat is good... Honestly, hard to really tell it from beef, at least the 'roo I had. Considerably better imho than "game" like venison.
And there are *no* lack of kangaroos in Australia... Lived there a couple of years, and one of the more ominous and trippy things I ever heard was this distant, growing rumbling that sounded not really like anything I had ever heard before, and turned out to be a "herd" (can't remember if that's what it's called) of kangaroos on the run... Something about the way they locomote makes the sound extra thumpy I guess. This was in Canberra, where kangaroos are very common and numerous.
Kangaroo are basically deer, except in Australia. There are plenty of them and their meat is safe to eat. How about Congress actually focus on something that matters?

You resent the hell out of the fact that many other people are flat-out, better, more honest people than you are, right? More “live and let live”, and WAAAY less authoritarian?

From the conclusion to the above…
These findings suggest that we don’t need to downplay personal triumphs to avoid negative social consequences, as long as we make it clear that we don’t look down on others as a result.
SQRLSY back here now… So, I do NOT want you to feel BAD about YOU being an authoritarian asshole, and me NOT being one! PLEASE feel GOOD about you being an authoritarian asshole! You do NOT need to push me (or other REAL lovers of personal liberty) down, so that you can feel better about being an authoritarian asshole! EVERYONE ADORES you for being that asshole that you are, because, well, because you are YOU! FEEL that self-esteem, now!
“Begathon”
Excellent.
So obviously you did not listen to Trump (and his enablers) pre and post election claims of election fraud, you did not hear about his lawyers losing over fifty cases in court alleging voting corruption, you do not trust the thousands of GOP election officials across the country in every region of every state certify their election results, or Trump’s attorney General and his head of cyber security say the election was free and fair, or the Supreme Court refuse to hear Trump’s lawyers claim of election fraud, or the Georgia hand recount confirming their results.
So you don’t believe all these facts, nor your own eyes and ears, but you do believe the Minority of Senators, all GOP (but not even all of the GOP) who chose to stay on the gravy train rather than choose reality. The little worlds you folks live in..
You and so many like you have a strange way of defining reason and reality.
Relax! Just Because I am Right and You are Wrong, Doesn’t Mean that I Want to Steal ‘Your’ Woman!!!
