HBO Takes a Deep Dive into the Wild Corners of QAnon
Documentary series Q: Into the Storm delves into the Trump-era conspiracy.

Q: Into the Storm. HBO. Sunday, March 21, 9 p.m.
"I think QAnon is something that could only happen in our current day," says an enthusiast of the conspiracy crypto-cult interviewed in HBO's new documentary Q: Into the Storm.
I suppose the truth of that claim depends a bit on how you define "current day." But the certainty that international Jewry was plotting to enslave the world and had even boldly transcribed its plan in a book called The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion swept the globe 120 years ago and is, even now, popular in Japan and the Middle East. The manic belief that the murder of John F. Kennedy more than half a century back was the sinister centerpiece of a coup by (take your pick) the CIA, the Mafia, Big Oil, or World Communism is still a planetary obsession. Then there are the 9/11 Truthers, the faked moon landing crowd, and of course the cabal of Freemasons who sank the Titanic. And don't get me started on the cover-up of Paul McCartney's death.
So filmmaker Cullen Hoback, who's been chasing QAnon around for several years now, may feel a bit self-important about the subject of his work. But that's my only real criticism of his six-hour series. QAnon itself may be simply one more iteration of the populist fever dreams that have set the far reaches of American politics ablaze from time to time and then quietly burn out. But the digital netherworld from which it sprang is fascinating, and Q: Into the Storm is a lively travelogue of that terrain.
QAnon sprang to life in October 2017, when someone calling himself (herself? themselves?) Q Clearance Patriot began a series of posts on the sketchy 4chan internet message board claiming to be a senior aide to Donald Trump. (The name Q referred to his claim to have a Q-level security clearance, which sounds super-spooky-secret unless you know that nearly 1.5 million people have one.) He asked the board's readers to help Trump combat a forthcoming coup by the so-called Deep State.
That was the start-up of about 5,000 posts—Q himself, using spy jargon, calls them "drops"—running through the 2020 election. They're usually cryptic—entire squadrons of "Q-tubers" produce videos seeking to interpret and explain each new one that appears—and their predictions are often wrong: Hillary Clinton was never arrested, John McCain never resigned from the Senate, and the Trump administration never bombed North Korea.
Yet QAnon, Q's collective followers, remain certain that he's a prophet, their window into the secret world of the Deep State. Hoback's camera moves tranquilly among them as they explain their own theories and trace their connections to other lurid digital dramas, most notably Pizzagate (the belief that a collection of senior Democrats was sodomizing and then cannibalizing children in the basement of a Washington D.C. pizza restaurant, taken seriously enough by one Pizzagate believer that he shot the place up with a rifle) and Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings).
Hoback chats with past and present owners of the wild and wooly message boards—they feature everything from diaper porn to white supremacist manifestos—where Q posts appear. One of them insists that he tolerated QAnon only in the interest of free speech. His own politics were quite different: "My one idea was to round up all of the politicians and then machine-gun them. And then the replacements come in and we round them all up and machine gun them….I'd run for president as Machine Gun Jim." Proclaims another: "I don't seek infamy, but I will embrace it."
Hoback spends a lot of time mounting and then knocking down theories about the true identity of Q—everybody from Trump cronies Michael Flynn and Roger Stone to the owners of some of those message boards. It's diverting in an Agatha Christie sort of way, but ultimately beside the point. Whoever Q is, he clearly didn't really have access to secret White House dope. And as the Trump administration fades further into the background, so does the importance of Q's identity. Paranoia may strike deep, but then it moves on.

Interesting, I was wondering last night when we'd see the first HBO documentary on the Insurrection. I guess I have my answer.
I wonder when they're going to do their first documentary on BlueAnon?
Don't worry, I won't hold my breath.

What are you talking about? This 'documentary' pretty much is Blue Anon.

and Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings).
Gamergate had nothing to do with Q. It started in 2014 prior to Q. Not sure why this is in here. And while your blurb is indeed correct, it was also about journalistic integrity. It help explains the explosion of youtube gaming reviews by actual consumers vs. professional journalist.
Because tbey don't do basic research here. They just repeat Twitter.
All these 'mistakes' inevitably go in one direction.
So, not a 'lack of research,' just the rank dishonesty of agenda driven media.
And that's not at all what Gamergate was about.
But as the commenter below says, it's not like they actually do research.
It wasn't about journalistic integrity? While I can't pin down the whole wide range of views, there was a camp who was tired of journalist having undisclosed relationship (financial, sexual) with the developers they were covering.
That said I'd also say it was about people throwing shit in an harassment campaign as well along with many other views.
Yeah, Gamergate was about journalistic integrity. It had nothing to do with women in gaming. It did have to do with people like Anita Sarkesian and her asinine takes on gaming and that the gaming press exposed their disdain for their audience.
But expecting the press to cover the misdeeds of the press is a step too far.
To be sure.
Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings)
Is this an attempt at gaslighting or the result of it? I mean, seriously.
https://www.popehat.com/2014/10/21/gamer-gate-three-stages-to-obit/
I still don't quite get gamergate, but I have to wonder, why can't these women have their own games and a distinct gaming culture? It's possible to enjoy games, I can only assume, without all the juvenile teenage boy shit.
I still don’t quite get gamergate
Long story short, imagine everything happening today, but seven years ago and only in the video game community. It was pushback against leftist cultural dogma (in the form of feminism at the time) being injected into the 'gamer' subculture, with the trigger being a scandal involving the leftist cultural priests all literally in bed with each other.
What Gamergate really boiled down to was Quinn created a game Depression Quest that was text based and based on her personal experience with depression. While the game was well received by the so called professional game reviewers it did not sell worth shit. Not really much of a shock since peeps who buy games are mostly teenage boys, or peeps with a teenage boys view of what a game should be. This means gratuitous sex and gratuitous violence sells. Not to mention who wants to play a game answering questions about being depressed and make decisions about what to do next.
For some reason the left wingers took up the cause of moving games away from bash and slash to answering dull questions like does a rainy day make you sad and got mad that teenage boys (et. al.) were still buying games with heroines with big breast who wore revealing clothes. You did not need to be a marketing genius to know what happened next. Games that sold well had babes with bigger breasts and more revealing clothes and text based politically correct games sat on the shelves.
Oh yea there was a lot of online name calling and dirty tricks. But 99% of the gamers ignored this and simply kept buying and playing games with characters with big breasts and revealing clothes while the usual suspects decried the lack of political correctness in game playing. MEH
Close, but note that the male characters in a lot of those games wear revealing clothing as well. It really depends upon the game itself, but say a fantasy game where one can pick a warrior class of either male or female, both will have revealing clothing and unattainable bodies.
She wasn't chastised for her sexuality. She was chastised for trading sex for publication.
Yes; that's stages 1 and 2 of the affair. What I clipped is specifically categorizing the non-gaming leftist's take on it, whose involvement catalyzed everything following.
Both sides were a bunch of whining idiots. To come to the defense of either side is to wade into the sludge yourself.
Basically a hetero couple had a split, and half the gaming universe decided they needed to take sides in who was the most obnoxious.
"Both sides"
So your side were assholes and you need to give them cover.
The reason a lot of people took sides in the Gamergate thing was the growing belief that gaming journalists were figuratively in bed with game developers. The flashpoint of the story just happened to focus on a literal case of being in bed with a developer, and thus the whole affair became far more personal and cringe-worthy.
Ken White is a dishonest fuck?
Who knew!
Oh, who the fuck cares? I'm happy to have very little idea what Q anon even is and would like to keep it that way. Crazy weirdos believe crazy shit, wow!
Because this Q movement is a big part of how we ended up with Jan 6th, the Comet Ping Pong shooting, etc. These people have done real world attacks. Trump praised and encouraged this insanity.
https://www.axios.com/trump-praises-qanon-supporters-i-understand-they-like-me-very-much-42146fb3-bd69-4943-8e80-2f0bcf4b0b17.html
I know all of the traitors and sympathizers around here want to pretend like this is all no big deal, but it is. And they can't hand wave it away simply because it is embarrassing for them that these people make up a big part of the same cult they are in.
So can we now demonize the BLM movement since it's responsible for the violent mobs of white people ransacking black neighborhoods and murdering black children last year?
Nope
Well, Jan 6 doesn't bother me any more than any other unruly protest and people insane enough to go on a shooting spree like that will be set of by something one way or another. So I still don't care. I already knew that there are crazy idiots in the world.
We have a couple members of congress who believe this. This is not harmless stuff. This is insanity.
We also have members of Congress trying to put American citizens into reeducation camps, but that doesn't seem to bother you.
Lol. Cite?
You forgot which sock you were using again.
We have more members of congress who are on record as 9/11 Truthers. We have dozens of members of congress who supported radical left wing violence and race riots that caused over 3 dozen deaths, hundreds of assaults, multiple rapes, andd over 2 billion dollars in property damage. The majority of congress passed a law to make sure then-president Trump could not draw down troops in Afghanistan and end the longest active conflict in American history. Are you sure you want to die on the hill of a 4chan meme that was already dead by the time your retarded handlers at Democratic Underground even found out about it?
So members of congress are responsible for BLM, but Trump is not responsible for a mob coming directly from his "Trump 2020 Stop the Steal" rally, dressed in Trump merch, waving Trump flags, and chanting "Death to Mike Pence" as Mike Pence is attempting to certify the election results, just as Trump told them to?
Amazing. Simply unbridled hypocrisy.
Go ahead and post a few quotes that are from a Dem president that encourage riots. Or try a senator?
There are now two Trump admin officials who have been caught communicating with rioters on that day. Let me know when a similarly outrageous collusion is found from dems/blm that is even halfway equivalent.
Or you know what? Don't. Simply condemn a brazen attack on our elections and constitution. Isn't that simple?
Nobody could have ever confused Barack Obama's intentions, that's for sure.
No, he's saying that by YOUR standard members of congress are responsible for BLM. If Trump is responsible for the capitol hijinx, then they are responsible for all the shit he listed.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't think any of them are particularly responsible for any of it. They all could have done more to calm the situation, but that isn't the same as being responsible for it happening.
The "brazen attack on our elections and constitution" was the theft of Donald Trump's rightfully won second term, through a massive fraud campaign, rivaling that of the worst dictatorships on Earth.
Even worse than the 2012 election fraud.
Members of Congress often spout stupid things their voters honestly believe, and often believe many of those things themselves. It's part of the tradeoff of representative democracy, especially in a weak-party era like the one we're in.
You could say that about a lot of things. There are many members of congress who believe shit that makes me a lot more worried than some whacko conspiracy theorizing.
Meh. In a world where 90% of people think there's a space hippie flying in the sky that *could* fix the world if it wanted to but doesn't just to "test you", I've given up on expecting any sort of rationality, and instead just measure it in terms of greys... Yeah the Qs are nuts but they're stupid and not very numerous. This too will pass. I mean, you've still got flat earthers out there and that's "not harmless" if they happen to be pilots, but... they're not.
And Jan 6th was an attack on our republic. If that does not bother you, then you simply do not care about living in a constitutional republic.
You have your talking points mixed up. It's a Danger To Our Democracy, not an attack on our republic.
I'm mixed up, or are you just unable to refute my point?
The constitution demands that electoral votes are certified in a certain time, place, and manner. The rioters purposely tried to prevent that. Hence, they attacked our constitution.
"The constitution demands that electoral votes are certified in a certain time, place, and manner. The rioters purposely tried to prevent that. Hence, they attacked our constitution."
No, it doesn't.
I see you're mom-ing up the place again with the faux terror.
If only the MAGAs had murdered 3 dozen people, including several black cops, and caused over 2 billion dollars worth of property damage, the vice president could have bailed them out of jail and we could put this national tragedy behind us.
Both are bad. This is not a contest.
But one was a direct attack on the fundamental basis of freedom, which is elections.
"direct attack on the fundamental basis of freedom, which is elections"
Pretty sure the chaps who frauded the results and are busy banning and canceling everyone who talks about it, may just be the real villains.
You know, guys like you.
Says the Canadian, who keeps inserting his opinion into discussions about American government. And lies like a rug to save face when shown indisputably that he is wrong about his beliefs.
For some weird reason you keep banging on your weird idea that other nationalities can't have opinions on American politics.
What is even stranger, is that it is exceedingly likely that you're a sockpuppet for an obese Torontonian.
Brit here, you should be reminded how retarded you look to the rest of the world.
The world is laughing at your wokeness and your ditzy new pres.
Forget it if this was 1930s Germany he would be saying the Jewish family hiding in the Attic is a threat to the country
So AOC cowering in a bathroom blocks away is the fundamental basis of freedom. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Wait, this is is still a "libertarian" zine right?
“And they can’t hand wave it away simply because it is embarrassing for them that these people make up a big part of the same cult they are in.”
It was embarrassing to me when I was active in the Libertarian Party when, say, that one Libertarian candidate was all over national TV for turning himself blue. But I didn’t try to deny his existence. I owned it.
I think jan 6th was more them qanon theres plenty of us like zeb who know nothing about. Dont assume this was only q fueled. We are normal boring people who just want to be and let be. It becomes enough when you have fireworks/explosions going off to celebrate or enforce whatever woke outrage is going on. Deny people sleep and peace. Graffiti on walls and streets. Ads and billboards spouting their 3rd wave religion.(yes in mt it happens here too) Jan 6th was a middle finger by many that are sick of it. I'm don’t care if it was right or wrong but you push and prod like an annoying younger sibling who never gets punished and people react.
"Q movement is a big part of how we ended up with Jan 6th"
As opposed to a year of rioting, murder, and wanton destruction cheered on by politicians and excused by a sympathetic agenda driven media.
Yeah, that did nothing to give people the impression that demonstrations were a permissive environment.
You fucking liar...
...the Comet Ping Pong shooting...
That happened 2 months before Trump's inauguration. Idiot.
And Blue Anon continues without question.
Lol. You are so deep in the cult that you get offended on behalf of Q anon dummies. Can't help but both-sides and what-about when your fellow travelers are being criticized.
You mean like how you deflect from 8 months of continuous race riots that killed over 3 dozen people, resulted in hundreds of assaults, multiple rapes and caused over 2 billion dollars worth of property damage with idiotic pants shitting about how 200 people in face paint and plastic viking horns were going to overthrow the United States government?
Surely the company that hosts the hissy John Oliver will get it right.
Good lord, I can't stand that guy. He is the epitome of lack of context, overly simplistic reductionism in order to come off as righteous and all-knowing.
More accurate headline:
HBO Creates A Deep Dive Into The Wild Corners Of QAnon
Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings).
Just to repeat what others have said, this was not what gamergate was. At all. At. All.
Oh and a certain someone's serial accusations of misogyny and harassment actually has a body count. So there's that too.
This is a lie that has been repeated so often, it is now understood as the truth.
I expect that “Q” is a couple of bored brothers sitting at their laptops in their mother’s basement, astounded that so many folks on both sides of the political spectrum bought it.
"Nobody's following our crop circles anymore, what should we do now?"
What makes QAnon different from all those other conspiracies, is that a major political party openly played footsie with it. Something that has happened since the 19th century.
But wait! I hear you cry! What about Hillary's claim of a "vast right ring conspiracy theory"? The difference is that it was obvious hyperbole and not taken as any sort of insider deep state conspiracy.
You mean that the conspiracy theory that set the whole nation's law enforcement apparatus against a single political campaign with unconstitutional warrants was just obvious hyperbole?
This is a good point to bring up Ball of Collusion. And the author's not some QAnon-regurgitating crank, contrary to DOL's implication upthread.
Correct, your party, the Democratic Party, did indeed play footsie with Q-Anon. No one else in the entire country ever even acknowledged it. The hilarious thing is that you managed to latch onto it about 4 years after it had already wound itself down.
Hey is this some of that "whataboutism" I keep hearing so much about?
Let's set aside Hillary Clinton's vast right wing conspiracy, which she not only was 100% serious about, but continued to raise as an issue for the next 2 decades, including blame said right wing conspiracy for her loss of the US presidential election in 2016. How about Russian collusion? Kinda seems like one party sort of kind of played footsie with that completely discredited conspiracy theory, for which one of the conspirators is now a convicted criminal due to fabricating evidence and presenting it to a FISA court. Or hey, let's talk about how the Democratic Party has multiple 9/11 Truthers in it to this day. Maybe we could discuss the vice president of the United States paying the bail for rioters who murdered over 3 dozen people, assaulted hundreds of others, raped multiple women, caused over 2 billion dollars worth of property damage, and attempted to burn down several buildings after locking people inside. Let's talk about the dramatic differences there too you slimy piece of worm shit.
Hillary Clinton, you must remember, is one of our normal politicians, so her crazy theorizing must not be discounted out of hand.
I think blm could be argued its based on conspiracy too so that would be pretty recent also?
"... a major political party openly played footsie with it."
Footsie.
As opposed to providing bail money and free legal representation to those arrested and/or facing prosecutions.
Because that's not footsie
The only reason I know about Q is that the establishment media can't shut up about it. I still, to this day, don't even know what it is. this post seems to kind of describe what it was, but, ok. It actually seems kind of innocuous, especially after Trump was the target of a deep state coup initiated by a shady former intelligence officer who created a fake dossier that kept the media in apoplexy for the next four years.
Conspiracy theorists indeed.
For instance, has anyone ever been held accountable for the mass media cooked narrative about gas attacks in Syria? A narrative so overcooked that The Nation finally had to call it out?
"For instance, has anyone ever been held accountable for the mass media cooked narrative about gas attacks in Syria? "
You think the mass media was responsible for that? Go back to the original reports of the story. I'll bet you'll find them sourced to anonymous sources in the military or intelligence apparatus. Blaming the messenger is just another way of being suckered and misled.
Forced to write poorly documented bullshit stories at gunpoint. The poor dears.
Some journalists questioned the bombing from the start. They are not part of the main stream, though. Don't they deserve your praise?
Deadlines are violence.
Violence!
Tighter deadlines make for more mistakes. It's not a difficult concept to understand.
But it also has a built-in solution. Refusing that solution places the blame more on the messenger than on the "unnamed government sources" whether you wish to see it or not.
Must be rough, the whole not having to have multiple sources for a story.
Hey, while you're here...can you explain how multiple media companies independently verify a story that is, you know, false? Has happened a few times as of late.
Having multiple sources is no guarantee of anything, The journalist could unwittingly have a few sources telling him the same thing, but those sources could all be part of the operation. A journalist could talk for example to someone at State department and another in the Army without knowing they'd both got together to iron out their stories previous to the whole incident.
"Hey, while you’re here…can you explain how multiple media companies independently verify a story that is, you know, false? "
Ever diminishing deadlines, the competition to get the story first leads to careless decisions. And the media benefits by covering stories like bombing Syria because ratings equal money,
So, because they won't do their job?
In the end, their job is to sell an audience to advertisers. All else is opera.
So why should the press have any protections that, say, car manufacturers lack?
Car manufacturers can be fired easily. So can journalists, maybe even more easily if they are not unionized.
"Diaper porn?"
Ok, who's gonna click on it, and then come back an tell the rest of us just what that is?
Or does someone with a known penchant for such things already know?
QAnon's even got people thinking the chemical formula for water is H2O! Thank goodness we have White Knight to set us straight!
I'm old enough to remember the Kennedy assassination. Actually watched Oswald get murdered in low z black and white live from Dallas as a tyke. Nobody bought the official version for at least a generation. All of the "conspiracy theories" made more sense. But yeah history is written. One crazy dude with a crappy rifle killed the most heavily guarded person on the planet and then conveniently died a couple days later. Oh and Jeffrey Epstein killed himself. Like all libertarians I crave normal parameters and the conventional wisdom keeps me content as long as I can smoke dope and get a government paid abortion.
Heh I knew a guy whose uncle was a chief detective or something there at the time. He asked his uncle who really killed Kennedy. His uncle said in a grave voice “as far as YOU know, it was Oswald”
That's the story and we're sticking to it.
>>which sounds super-spooky-secret unless you know that nearly 1.5 million people have one.
sounds like someone's jelly.
I guess I have to ask, which conspiracy theory scares you the most:
One that started in a shady comment board on 4chan and inspired some people in bear costumes to charge into the US capitol, one of whom was shot by capital police.
Or one that started at the highest levels of the intelligence agencies, was subsequently picked up by the FBI, and was pushed by most of the media and one entire political party that nearly took out a sitting US President.
It's a tough choice, but I know which one concerns me more.
REAL libertarians trust their government and our cherished democratic institutions implicitly and never question authority. REAL libertarians support getting toxic hate speech sites off the internet by any means necessary. REAL libertarians support our FBI using its resources to track down and terminate this hacker known as 4chan.
My sentiment exactly. If libertarians can't trust the government who can we trust? Our own lyin eyes?
REAL libertarians show a deep abiding concern when government causes the unnecessary death of unarmed civilians.
Well. At least they do some of the time.
So long as, you know, it wasn't some icky person who had the temerity to do something they didn't agree with.
(Yes, FUCK YOU Sullum.)
This, plus QAnon is something the left tells us represents the right, yet most people have never heard of them. Since their largest contribution was to tell the right to sit tight, the fraud is being dealt with, it seems more like a left wing concoction to quell any kind of push back on the election.
At the end of the day, whatever the left tells us about the right (or anything else) is 98% wrong,
I wonder if most Q followers are just trolling like most flat earthers are just trolling for arguments. heck i want a Q shirt just to piss people off.
I have to admit it is fascinating what people will believe in. I always enjoy reading about this kind of stuff. Various occult practices, conspiracy theories, Q anon, UFOs, Bigfoot, all that crazy stuff.
Once these things become fixed ideas and there are plenty floating around here there is no way to convince the individual otherwise. It is an interesting phenomenon.
I think people are uncomfortable with uncertainty and want to find explanations which confirm their own beliefs. We see a lot of that concerning the election and coronavirus lately.
Q is very cult like. It gives you power to be in on something the rest of the world does not know about.
$150k in Facebook ads stole the election from Hillary Clinton. Moscow has tapes of Trump getting peed on by hookers. Trump telling his supporters to demonstrate peacefully incited an insurrection.
But yeah, just imagine believing there are unidentified flying objects just because the military has been studying and documenting them for 75 years. People believe some truly crazy things! The next thing you know you'll have some psychopath trying to tell us that the government conducts medical experiments on its own citizenry or gives psychedelic drugs to soldiers. Lunatics!
Believe what you're told to believe. It's the libertarian way.
well, yes, all those... and religion.
Well yeah, but you forgot the TRUTH, which is that fluoridated water is chock-full of tiny little Hunter Biden homunculi (one each per each fluorine atom, with a tiny sub-atomic Hunter Biden working the tiny little brain-control levers, and chucking an evil laugh) as they FORCED tens of millions of fluoridated-water-drinking voters to NOT vote for Trump!
HbF
Hunterbiden Fluoride, right? I do wonder, what is the atomic number of Hunterbiden? Can I get a federal research grant to study that?
SQRLSY, if it were up to me you would get a huge research grant, a corner office, and be named Poet Laureate.
But, sadly, not up to me.
I’m like you. Fascinated by conspiracies and conspiracy believers, but never believe in them myself.
Qanon was a psyop, probably from the beginning. And I say this as someone who believe the election was stolen. The Qanon beliefs were based on a combination of truth (globalists and corrupt politicians worked together to enable massive election fraud) and misinformation (i.e. the idea that Trump or the military had anything up his sleeve or that anyone was going to jail over it)
I actually think the true conspiracy might even be worse than the one they believed. These same people who are holding Q believers up as a warning to others enabled both the fraud and suppressed the truth about how bad Biden would be. Additionally, I think the Deep State and/or foreign actors were probably involved in spreading misinformation, and they plan on using Q as a justification for getting rid of the constitution once and for all. It has already begun with the nothingburger Capitol riot (of which we have evidence that the Deep State played a part in that too)
Qanon is literally the culmination of media/government gaslighting.
I believe the election was stolen and *still* don't know what q is about
Me too.
Me too. Jo Jorgensen really won it but the ballot counters did not have her as an option on their screens so they automatically flipped her votes to one of the other two.
Boogeymen cannot be rational. The irrational thus avoids scrutiny. When someone says Qanon with a straight face simply substitute chupacabra or bigfoot and what they are doing will become immediately apparent.
"Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings)"
That's not what Gamergate was about. It's what the game journalist in the eye of the storm, claimed it was about, after she got caught writing glowing reviews of her boyfriends game, and taking money from games companies.
It was amazing at the time to watch American journalism rush to white knight for a hack who was basically shitting on what journalism was supposed to be.
Little did I suspect at the time that this kind of professional malpractice would become the norm.
True, it was blown way out of proportion and forced people to take sides. Same with that stupid worldcon puppies balloting around the same time. It gave the social justice assholes a platform to launch their "white supremacy" bullshit and smear a bunch of libertarians and conservatives. Right out of Alinsky's playbook.
Do not think of it as a double standard on display.
What they were doing was revealing their actual operative standard.
They are all hacks, who do not give a fig about 'what journalism is supposed to be.'
Because to them the only thing journalism actually is is a vehicle for promoting leftism.
Everyone wants his or her life to have meaning. Liberals see themselves fighting to save the planet from slightly warmer weather, or as warriors for social justice. These well-meaning Trump supporters see themselves as saving the children from a ruling class of vampires. There's a little bit of truth in both sides, and a lot of hype.
Read Nancy Rommelmann's "The Dreams of the '90s Died in Portland" in the latest Reason magazine (or here in a while).
It explains, among other things, how the Liberals there wrap themselves so tightly in their platitudes and search for meaning that they consider that violence and hatred of the other are all right, as long as they are the ones doing it.
The precursor to every genocide is convincing yourself that the world can be divided into good and bad, right and wrong... and that your side is the good/right one.
Ask the Objectivists, for example.
Dunno if Nancy considers herself a libertarian but she's distinguished herself as a first rate reporter. I look forward to her piece. Too good for Reason to be frank.
Watching sleepy Joe on TV insisting that the Atlanta shooting is an anti Asian hate crime. Despite the fact that there is no evidence that that is the case. Desperate Democrats trying to win back the Asian vote after shitting on them since FDR. Sad.
I hate to break it to you but there aren’t any Asians holding a grudge against the Democrats for World War II eras stuff.

LOL, you fail to understand that you have to provide a cite that disproves what I said, not some fuzzy equivalent of what I said. Nothing about Democrats in your link.
Lol, who do you think you're fooling.

"...and Gamergate (a campaign of harassment against female video-game designers suspected of feminist leanings)."
I believe that is a false characterization, or, at least, a quite biased one. My understanding is that Gamergate had more to do with complaints about the gaming press having a corrupt bias towards games promoting a certain ideology and generally hating on their their core audience.
The MAGA hat, always the MAGA hat, contains all of the madness.
“The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.” ~ Marcus Aurelius
The MAGA hat has brought new meaning and great relevance to that old phrase: "Mad as a hatter!"
Trumpism is, like mercury, a cumulative poison with no known safe dosage.
The exact same problem stymied denazification. Opening German Minds in the Toledo Blade for April 14, 1946 (Free on Google News Archive) tells how National Socialist brainwashing left roughly half of all surviving Germans incapable of much besides parroting christian socialist beliefs in jewish plutocrat conspiracies. Large numbers defected to soviet socialism rather than put up with laissez-faire liberal ideas.
Decoder rings are still available on Etsy, if anyone is actually interested.
(Glad I didn't order big from the manufacturer.)
This might be the biggest and longest 'what-about' in the history of reason.
And doubly funny because you what-abouted to a doppelganger of the same issue. Just a conspiracy documentary, but with the conspiracy theorists as the sympathetic party, instead of the conspiracy theorists as the kooks.
Once again, cultists running to the comments to prove their detractors correct.
All within normal parameters. Not to worry. But a bunch of powerless kids posting about something called Qanon is a threat to our beloved democratic institutions.

An interesting example is Dazzle Camouflage, where ships were painted in zebra-like patterns. It actually made them more visible. The idea was not to conceal ships, but to make their speed, course and range more difficult to gauge, frustrating the Uboat commanders who were trying to sink them. Using tactics like these is not as insane as you take them to be.
considering our government has actually poisoned experemented on its own people no conspiracy is to wild to not be true.
Well, missed how actual systemic racism - the failing schools to prison pipeline - is being completely ignored by the Dems. For instance, Baltimore that couldn't graduate ONE student proficient in math from 13 high schools despite being #3 in per student spending - oh hey! The Democrats, going back to Nancy Pelosi's dad 70 years ago, have been running that town. Where's the outrage? Plenty of black deaths due to the hopelessness and ignoring of the catastrophe there, and if a Black republican woman challenges the status quo (Kimberly Klacik), she gets called a racist (I actually heard a very intelligent white liberal call her that). Where's the real investigative reporting that so desperately needs to be done? Nope, just call people racists or conspiracy theorists, and go on your self-righteous way seems to be the media's cant. The Black reaction (not positive) to Antifa's rioting? Buried. There are real rational reasons that are messy and not as dramatic as "investigating" Q-Anon that maybe someone will have the cojones to splash on their front pages. However, I'm not holding my breath...

Remember, Mother's and Geiger say that all the Capitol rioters just walked around "staying inside the ropes". And Brian Sicknick died of too many "We love the Blue" hugs.
Left wing mental illness check you mentioned whataboutism and then never refuted the OP. Are you well or just hoping for smacks.
"This might be the biggest and longest ‘what-about’ in the history of reason"
For DOL the word "whataboutism" is his shining shield to protect him from legitimate accusations of hypocrisy.
I remember when the Bidenistas claimed he was killed by blows to the head with a fire extinguisher, and kept that narrative long, long, looong after it had been reported that he had not died from head trauma and had no external injuries whatsoever.

I’ll quote De Opp from above: “Once again, cultists running to the comments to prove their detractors correct.”
Good, because anyone else would probably get stung for it [and I'd prefer it'd be her anyway].
Geiger might be the champion at this.
nothing to refute. Geiger tries to pivot to another documentary that is sympathetic to the dum dums. I pointed that out. That's it. Fin.
I have never referred to my service record unless someone else is trying to libel me. Simply put, I would never bring it up if you guys did not.
Relentlessly mock them, logically prove them wrong, show the inconsistency and hypocrisy inherent in their beliefs, provide sources and citations that are irrefutable, etc..
Last I checked. She has a spiffy title and a nice salary, but that's about it.
Remember how you went on and on about AOC having no real power?
You need to keep a better record of some of your old arguments.
AOC almost got murdered.
IOW, you're going to continue linking to the same 5 or 6 documents that you haven't read, pretend they say things that they demonstrably do not, and then cry WHATABOUTISM when you get your points stuffed back up your festering AIDS-riddled asshole where they came from? Sounds like fun cytotoxic.
I wasn't going to so much as google it, either way. The title told me all I need to know. I don't need a book when I have 60 some court case results.
I post many different sources almost every day I bother commenting.
The sources I post most frequently are the government reports concerning Russian election interference (new report for 2020 election just came out; check it out). I post those repeatedly because they contain plainly factual events, recorded conversations, testimonies given under oath, intercepted communications, etc. that would clear up a lot of arguments you guys have here, if you would just read them.
Right, that's why we so enjoy bringing it up, because you're a proven liar who has never served in the US armed forces mostly because you're a Canadian who lives in the greater Toronto metro area and posted here for half a decade under the screen name "cytotoxic" before you so thoroughly embarrassed yourself with your support for Hillary Clinton and subsequent emotional meltdown when she lost that you retired the account and started at least 3 sockpuppets, including this one, chemjeff, and White Knight. It's very, very fun baiting you into telling completely disproven lies. It's why I bait you into posting that the Mueller report conclusively proved Russian collusion almost every day. Remember how you got picked on in school for being an obese fatass piece of shit? It comes from the same place.

It is now crystal clear Trump is monster. If you still support him, you are a bad person. There is no ambiguity, no wiggle room anymore.
Good times...
Yeah, there was a few days ago when he made the totally unforced error of comparing fallen Officer Brian Sicknick with Adolph Hitler, just out of the blue.
Poor White Knight, even CNN invective is of no help for his narrative:
Look at the images of the day, and you will see some officers passively stand aside as the insurrectionists stroll into the halls of the Capitol, walking calmly between the burgundy velvet ropes. You will see some of the invaders pausing to take selfies with officers. You will see a certain chummy quality in the interaction between some Capitol Police officers and the rioters. This makes me wonder if, within the ranks of the Capitol Police, some were sympathetic or agreed with the rioters.

Here's video of White Frights insUrrEctionists walking around and “staying inside the ropes”. It must be a deepfake, right WK?

Uh-huh.
Stolen Valour is having technical problems proving he's a Double Green Beret and X-class Navy Seal. Imagine that.
"60 some court case results"
Oh? What court case results would those be?
Because a bunch of frightened judges refusing to hear because of standing, isn't exactly a verdict on anything.
Those hypocrisy charges would sting without it.

“Dear Abby” is a personal friend of mine. She gets some VERY strange letters! For my amusement, she forwards some of them to me from time to time. Here is a relevant one:
Dear Abby, Dear Abby,
My life is a mess,
Even Bill Clinton won’t stain my dress,
I whinny seductively for the horses,
They tell me my picnic is short a few courses,
My real name is Mary Stack,
NO ONE wants my hairy crack!
On disability, I live all alone,
Spend desperate nights by the phone,
I found a man named Richard (Dick) Decker,
But he won’t give me his hairy pecker!
Dick Decker’s pecker is reserved for farm beasts,
I am beastly, yes! But my crack’s full of yeasts!
So Dear Abby, that’s just a poetic summary… You can read about the Love of my Life, Richard Decker, here:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/10/11/farmers-kept-refusing-let-him-have-sex-with-their-animals-so-he-sought-revenge-authorities-say/#comments-wrapper
Farmers kept refusing to let him have sex with their animals. So he sought revenge, authorities say.
Decker the hairy pecker told me a summary of his story as below:
Decker: “Can I have sex with your horse?”
Farmer: “Lemme go ask the horse.”
Pause…
Farmer: “My horse says ‘neigh’!”
And THAT was straight from the horse’s mouth! I’m not horsin’ around, here, no mare!
So Richard Decker the hairy pecker told me that, apparently never even realizing just HOW DEEPLY it hurt me, that he was all interested in farm beasts, while totally ignoring MEEE!!
So I thought maybe I could at least liven up my lonely-heart social life, by refining my common interests that I share with Richard Decker… I, too, like to have sex with horses!
But Dear Abby, the horses ALL keep on saying “neigh” to my whinnying sexual advances!
Some tell me that my whinnying is too whiny… Abby, I don’t know how to fix it!
Dear Abby, please don’t tell me “get therapy”… I can’t afford it on my disability check!
Now, along with my crack full of yeasts… I am developing anorexia! Some are calling me a “quarter pounder with cheese”, but they are NOT interested at ALL, in eating me!!! They will NOT snack on my crack!
What will I DO, Dear Abby?!?!?

"comparing fallen Officer Brian Sicknick with Adolph Hitler"

Yes, they absolutely were, by their own admission.
I've got one, it made me laugh so hard that I just had to save it.

I use my eyes, but have trained my mind not to exaggerate about what I’m seeing, and never to buy into the false dichotomy that I have to act like a sheep
Mamma knows damned well that she ALSO has yet ANOTHER choice, which is to act (NOT like a sheep, but instead) like a moose, which gets her moose-laid in Inner Islamic Canuckistanistanistanistanistan!
So endearing. You save bookmarks of my comments.
Killed. Never have used the word “murdered”, as murder requires premeditation.
You are picking up JesseAz’ habit of altering past conversations in the retelling.
I’ll quote De Opp from above: “Once again, cultists running to the comments to prove their detractors correct.”
Figuring out that CACLLs can only think fuzzily.
How is that even an argument?
There are two suspected currently being held for assaulting him, on video. We shall see if they end up being charged with killing him.
Regardless, he was most likely killed that day, as opposed to the unlikely possibility that his death was just a coincidence.
Got anything to back up your "likely" and "unlikely" scenarios?
And the two arrested for "assaulting" him was for using the heretofore-never-blamed-on-causing a stroke "bear spray".
The fact that they're refusing to release the autopsy report screams that your scenarios, like your brain, are ass-backwards.
White Knight is calling it now, Sicknick is the first guy in history to be killed by pepper spray.
The new report about the 2020 election, that says the Russians™ wanted to tear down Zhou Bai-din, who wants the same things as the they do - the destruction of America?
