Pausing AstraZeneca COVID-19 Shots Is a Bad Risk/Benefit Call
"The benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine...outweigh the risks of side effects."

Last week Austria, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland all suspended the administration of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, citing reports of blood clots occurring in a few folks who had been inoculated with it. Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, and the Netherlands have now joined them.
"There is no causal effect established or anything like that yet," Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin told CNBC, "but as a precautionary move in line with the precautionary principle and in an abundance of caution, our clinical advice was to pause the program whilst the EMA does a review of this."
The precautionary principle is an ideological construct that eschews risk-benefit evaluations and essentially requires that all new technologies be somehow proved entirely risk-free before they can be used.
"Many thousands of people develop blood clots annually in the EU for different reasons," the European Medicines Agency (EMA) points out in a statement today. "The number of thromboembolic events overall in vaccinated people seems not to be higher than that seen in the general population." So far there been 37 reports of blood clots out of more than 17 million people inoculated with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the 27-country European Union and Britain.
The EMA adds it "currently remains of the view that the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine in preventing COVID-19, with its associated risk of hospitalisation and death, outweigh the risks of side effects" (emphasis theirs). In clinical trials, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been shown to be essentially 100 percent effective in preventing hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 infections.
The EMA is calling a meeting of experts Thursday to evaluate the blood clotting data and will decide if any further action is necessary. Food and Drug Administration regulators will doubtlessly be keeping an eye on the EMA's deliberations, since AstraZeneca is likely this month to file for an emergency use authorization to deploy its vaccine in this country.

We need to be cautious with the precaution of taking cautions when using precautions in the name of caution.

Erin go bragh.
"but as a preCAUTIONary move in line with the preCAUTIONary principle and in an abundance of CAUTION,"
Caution much?
I tend to avoid that much Pre on any given day.

Big Coumadin is behind this whole thing.
So what about the second dose for those caught "in between"?
Is anyone saying that maybe long term effects should be studied in the lab and not in the population?
There is a reason I am waiting. (Beyond the courtesy of letting working folks go ahead of my useless retired self)
Go ahead and take mine. I figure I'm invincible after a year of going into work everyday and not dying.

>>outweigh the risks of side effects
easy to assert when not suffering side effects
... and when long-term side effects are unknown
Maybe on a whole-population level, where these public health people operate, vaccination looks like a winner. But for young people with low COVID risk, the benefits of vaccination are more dubious.
peoples' eyes will fall out at the 2-year mark.
I hope not. But the FDA's biggest source of legitimacy is their stopping a drug (thalidomide) because of insufficient safety data.
Ron, I don't know if you realize this, but your reputation of being completely terrified about your own mortality is well known. You should probably consider that when dishing advice on risk tolerance.
It’s all going too well. Better put out more cautionary tales to slow things down.
I though indian one will be worse
When these goons can empirically prove that these are as safe as the flu shot--as in, cause adverse reactions at equivalent or lower rates--then I'll think about getting the jab.
As it is, I'm quite content with the doomers scrambling to be the guinea pigs for a hyper-rushed vaccine. The hilarity of all this is that Fauci was whining yesterday that Trump needed to tell his voters to "get the vaccine" because it would be a "game-changer"--when he's already been bragging for weeks about how quickly he got it on the market, and even told people at CPAC to get the shot.
These leftist tards prove more and more every day that they have no ability to think for themselves without some "expert" or government stooge holding their useless baby hands 24/7.
When they claim these vaccines are "proven safe and effective" what they aren't saying is that they were proven safe and effective only for a defined portion of the population and only in the short term.
These vaccines are not approved, they are on an emergency use authorization, and they did not go through the years of trials other drugs/vaccines do to see if mid and long term adverse events arise (and some previous failed vaccine candidates have had those).
As a good example of the government lying about these vaccines, certain subsets of people were not included in the tests, but the government is letting (and sometimes encouraging) them to take it anyway. Pregnant women were specifically included from the trials but were included as an "underlying condition" to be vaccinated early, and only one vaccine had 16/17 year olds in the trial and no one younger than that was tested.
Great. Now everyone's a fucking doctor.
I've wondered if so many of those on twitter who append "MD" are actually legit. Too many spend a lot of time there as activists. I know medical doctors they generally don't have all that kind of time to preach outside of their practices.
Kind of like the Union of Concerned Scientists being a group of anti-nuclear power activists. If any of them are actual scientists, their research probably focuses on healing crystals or something.
But they are CONCERNED, and in the woke 21st century, that's all that counts.
What we have here is a failure to communicate.
For God's sake take your COVID vaccine.
It did wonders for Marvin Hagler.
If Astra Zenaca was the only vaccine, they should continue to use it and maybe recommend people that already have an elevated risk of blood clots not take it. However, there is already Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson as options, so they call pull Astra Zenaca, do a bit more study, and continue to vaccinate people.
The amount of risk you are willing to take can be affected by if other less risky options exist. There are, so it is prudent to move forward with less risky options.
Anytime you take a new drug or vaccine (first 5 years on the market) consider yourself as part of the clinical trial. So I always opt for the older drug unless an older drug doesn't exist.
I got vaccinated today knowing full well that I have no idea if I will have a bad reaction, but I want to get life back to normal so I got vaccinated with the first vaccine available.
And do you get to go back to normal life now?
2009 was the last time the risk/benefit pros told everyone to get a rushed-through vaccine. That didn't turn out so well.
https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-11-narcolepsy-fiasco-spurs-covid-vaccine.html
What should be notable about that Pandemrix/narcolepsy problem for the people thinking that these covid vaccines developed and given to millions in a quick turnaround are "proven safe", is that the problem was chalked up to statistical anomalies for years, and it was only 10 years later that a narcolepsy researcher identified the mechanism where the vaccine was causing narcolepsy in some young patients.
The actions of European countries are unscientific and irresponsible (until/unless evidence indicates increased risks by those who took the vaccine).
Don't know the origin of the "panic" about Astrazeneca's vaccine, but 100,000 Europeans (and Americans) die annually from Pulmonary Embolisms (PE) caused by blood clots, and hundreds of thousands (perhaps a million) more have nonlethal blood clots (which are treatable with blood thinners) each year.
I strongly suspect that several dozen covid vaccine recipients in America have also had blood clots (and strokes and heart attacks) since they took the vaccine(s).
I also suspect European countries will quickly reverse their vaccine pause (within days or a week), as most EU countries don't have contracts for other covid vaccines.
These are not vaccines. The shots are gene therapy.
You mean gene "therapy". The guy that wrote the law on germ warfare says that this vaccine iviolates said law.
His legal name included "Marvelous" precisely because he got tired of the media not using it (it was his nickname until he legally changed it).
You have joined the media in refusing to use his name, but even worse, you did it when it was his legal name.
