Texas Has Hundreds of Thousands of Coronavirus Carriers. The Governor Is Worried About 'Hundreds' of COVID-Positive Migrants.
Greg Abbott's fear is hard to take seriously, but it jibes with hoary stereotypes about immigrants.

President Joe Biden this week said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to lift most of his state's remaining COVID-19 restrictions was "a big mistake" that reflected "Neanderthal thinking" about the pandemic. Biden inaccurately suggested that Abbott was dismissing the value of face masks because he was no longer legally requiring them, when in fact Abbott "strongly encouraged" Texans to continue covering their faces in public when they are in close proximity to other people.
Abbott fired back on Twitter with an equally misleading charge against Biden, accusing him of promoting virus transmission by "recklessly releasing hundreds of illegal immigrants who have COVID into Texas communities." That policy, he averred, is a "callous act that exposes Texans & Americans to COVID."
Fox News host Jeanine Pirro echoed that charge on her show last night. "We've got people being released at the border right now who've got COVID," an outraged Pirro shouted at Geraldo Rivera, who unsuccessfully tried to get in a word of rebuttal. "Wait a minute, I listened to you; you listen to me! They've got COVID! They've got all kinds of diseases! They are being released into the United States!"
Abbott and Pirro seem to have been reacting to reports that a small fraction of asylum seekers released in Brownsville have tested positive for COVID-19. The city, which tests migrants at the bus station after they are released from Border Patrol custody, this week said 108, or 6.3 percent of the total tested between January 25 and March 1, were carrying the coronavirus. Like anyone else who tests positive for COVID-19, they were urged to quarantine themselves.
To put that number in perspective, Texas has recorded nearly 2.7 million COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic. COVID-19 modeler Youyang Gu estimates that the actual number, taking into account people who have not been tested, is more than 9 million. The state's estimate of active cases is more than 170,000, while Gu thinks the total is close to 300,000. The seven-day average of newly identified infections in Texas, per Worldometer, was about 6,600 as of yesterday.
Based on the official numbers, those 108 COVID-positive migrants represent about 0.06 percent of current infections in Texas. Based on Gu's estimate, their share is more like 0.04 percent. The foreign-born COVID-19 carriers who sent Pirro into a fit of apoplexy represent less than 2 percent of the new cases that Texas detects every day.
The notion that such a tiny cohort is contributing significantly to the epidemic in Texas, even assuming that they completely ignore the recommended precautions, is hard to take seriously. But it jibes with hoary stereotypes about immigrants, who have long been feared because they supposedly carry "all sorts of diseases."
Today former House Speaker Newt Gingrich complained that he "just got suspended by Twitter" because of a post "saying that having illegal immigrants come in without any controls is a public health issue in the time of COVID." Gingrich's account actually seems to still be active. But the offending tweet has been removed for an unspecified violation of Twitter's rules.
"If there is a covid surge in Texas," Gingrich said, "the fault will not be Governor Abbott's comon [sic] sense reforms. The greatest threat of a covid surge comes from Biden's untested illegal immigrants pouring across the border. We have no way of knowing how many of them are bringing covid with them." Or as Gingrich put it more pithily in a Fox News interview with Tucker Carlson yesterday, "If there's a problem with COVID in Texas, it's not Gov. Abbott; it's Biden's illegals."
It is simply bonkers to argue that admitting "hundreds" of COVID-positive asylum seekers poses a grave "public health issue," let alone that it will by itself cause a COVID-19 "surge," in a country with millions of active carriers, all of whom are just as free to disregard quarantine advice. Abbott likewise is weirdly fixated on an infinitesimal share of people infected by the coronavirus. If he is guilty of "Neanderthal thinking," this is a much better example than his decision to lift the face mask mandate.

So you're saying that Texas has a problem, so it should do what it can to make the problem worse?
Americans don’t matter to the open-borders crowd.

To assholes like Sullum, citizens are really just territorial residents. Second to the noble illegals.
Does the author, Jacob Sullum, live in Texas?
Very doubtful.
Does Mr Sullum, writing for Reason magazine, back his globalist open borders opinion with reason?
No. Just sounds like another woke SJW. My opinion of this website just took a tumble.
I'll have you know Mr. Sullum received his degree in virology from the University of CNN, and has read many important Voxplainers.
He used to live in Dallas, which makes this all the more disappointing.
I can't overstate how disappointed I am in his writing over the last 12 months or so. Excerpts from "Saying Yes..." encouraged me to continue reading Reason, way back when.
The tone of the articles is the disturbing part - growing ever darker and angrier. Which also pretty much tracking their descent into rank dishonesty as well.
I think it is all getting to him.
While also...
I have Sullem's exact home address - In Virginia. As well as his old address in Dallas. I could have posted it, but I wanted to reserve our meeting and my bludgeoning of his skull in myself, rather than allow others to do so.
Trumptards: Covid is a scam! Face diapers don’t do anything! It’s just the flu!
Also Trumptards: Covid is a Chinese bioterrorist attack! Illegal immigrants are killing Americans! It’s all the Dems fault!
Now do yourself idiot. If the Rona is so horrible that we had to shut the economy down for it, why is it now less horrible that we can ignore it and allow hundreds or thousands of potential carriers into the country without a second thought.
Talk about your Super Spreader event. Or are we ignoring that too unless a group of R's assemble.
As I've said before, you can't beat the dead horse and then complain when we want to ride it after you're done.
Where are people getting this crap? Based on everything I've heard, people coming into the country are being tested, and only admitted after a negative test. But, hey, any excuse to bash those filthy furriners is a good one.
If you are fucking stupid enough to believe that only legal immigrants get across the border then you are dumb as fuck.
You are a stupid motherfucker and an ignorant fucking asshole.
Please die
Yeah, it's amazing how the virus is an overblown hoax, and how Trump saved two million lives by fighting it.
Biden Faggots: Wear double masks. The more masks you put on the better. Later lets worship the spirit of safety and hold hands while hymning progressive song and love!
Also Biden Faggots: Let's lock down everything. Fuck those people who live paycheck to paycheck, even though they are our main constituents. Also, we need to wear masks forever. Never take them off, regardless if everyone has the vaccine!
The only way for Biden worshippers to protect themselves is to tie plastic bags around their necks. Any openings in the bag will let the WuFlu in, so no holes.
Doing this will solve many problems.

Jacob, this is specious horseshit. Did Shika phone this in to you?
Lol. Right?
Cant believe Imnsayingbthis, but its worse than anything Shikha wrote.
Link to there being "hundreds of thousands" of contagious Texans? Having antibodies doesnt spread COVID, Mr Science
Nobody really knows how this stuff works.
Previous sullum:
Americans should give up their freedoms to help slow covid.
New sullum: i said Americans, not foreigners.
"This article jibes with hoary stereotypes about Reason old-timers..."
I'm just curious if, couple years ago, there was some kind of midnight blood oath ceremony, wherein EVERY Reason staffer swore there would NEVER be a SINGLE WORD even CONSIDERING that unlimited immigration was anything other than a perfect boon.
Doesn't sound likely, but off the evidence...
The ceremony is every two weeks, when the checks come from the Kochs.
The line in the sand was drawn shortly after Trump's election in this piece by Brian Doherty. Relevant excerpts:
That piece lays out the entirety of the Reason editorial philosophy for the following 5 years: open borders is the singular definition of a libertarian and no policy, no matter how beneficial, shall ever come before it.
Let me guess. Covid is just the flu except when illegal immigrants have it in which case it’s worse than Ebola.
Well, you've clearly encapsulated your ability to dishonestly frame an issue.
But otherwise did you have anything to contribute?
You're going to need to use shorter words, Thomas.
Does Reason put out ads at someplace like Indeed or Glassdoor for these clowns?
He has nothing to contribute. Also, is this a new prog faggot, or one of our pre existing prog faggots.
Incompetent governor wants Texans to forget how badly they got fucked by the power outages of his party's doing by doing something stupid to distract them.
Incompetent governor wants
TexansYorkies to forget how badly they got fucked by thepower outagesnursing home massacres of his party’s doing by doing something stupid to distract them.Buy you keep being you, shitlunches.
The power outages that could have been mitigated if Bidens EPA had raised their allowable caps on fossil fuel generation plants? As Texas requested the week prior?
DOE, not EPA*
DOE is responsible for the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile, so you have to be careful with them.
That may be more relevant than you realize, in the next few years.
Jesse, add the requirement that NG apparatus be connected to the grid, rather than be powered either off the NG stream or via independent generation.
ya not though.
Your democrat federal regulations were the problem. This is your fault.
I usually never comment on this subject. Let me clear this up though. If you live in Texas, and are a citizen you do have a right to live there or have a visa or green card , covid or not. If your not, then, you do not. Don't confuse the the two.
Well, that's as clear as 6" of depleted uranium.
No, it's perfectly clear: Any reason is sufficient to eject illegal immigrants, however minor, because they're not supposed to be present in the country in the first place, and have no right at all to remain in the country.
It's like saying, "Double parking might be a minor offense, but I've still got no problem with throwing a bank robber in jail over it."
Precisely.
Alt-right white nationalists will try to convince you that a pandemic provides justification for immigration restrictions. Don't believe them.
We Koch / Reason libertarians know that, actually, a pandemic is the perfect time to implement the open borders agenda of our billionaire benefactor Charles Koch. Remember when our hospitals got totally overrun? That was because there were too few available doctors. A policy of unlimited, unrestricted immigration would have allowed millions of Mexican doctors to cross our Southern border and strengthen our healthcare system.

I remember when the rednecks insisted on playing college football and thousands and thousands of hearty young men died, and they just kept on playing! Oh, the humanity!!!
I'm not saying Abbott is a great guy or anything, but it seems valid to ask why Biden would let COVID carriers loose in America when it's equal to Super Ebola and will surely kill you dead. At least, according to FedGov that is. Isn't Biden part of the Federal administration, and has new magical super powers for writing their own immigration legislation?
Both of them are pretty two faced. Abbott opens up under political pressure and pays lip service to 'dangerous disease', and Biden closes down under political pressure and pays lip service to 'dangerous disease'. Neither one of them seriously believes it's a dangerous disease, they're just trying to score points on each other with people who already agree with whatever policy they've prescribed.
"It is simply bonkers to argue that admitting "hundreds" of COVID-positive asylum seekers poses a grave "public health issue" in a country with millions of active carriers, all of whom are just as free to disregard quarantine advice."
When the asylum seeker crisis was at its zenith in May of 2019, more than 100,000 a month were flooding into the system--80% of them children or families traveling with their children. The question isn't about those few hundred. It's about the deluge of asylum seekers that are sure to come flooding across our border in the wake of the Biden administration dismantling Trump's policies.
If you want to argue that the border should be opened to asylum seekers, you should do that in spite of the risks of doing so, I'm all for that. In fact, I'll make the argument myself. If more than 100,000 people per month come flooding across our border, it would be better if the border were open so we could test them before letting them into the country or packing them in with tens of thousands of other children, who are all being released piecemeal to aunts, uncles, and cousins all over America.
In the meantime, we need to have a serious conversation about why we've had two or three asylum seeker crises already--since Barack Obama instituted DACA.
And the fact is that before DACA, we received less than a thousand asylum seekers per year from Northern Triangle countries--almost none of them children--and after DACA, we started having regular asylum seeker crises with more than 100,000 asylum seekers per month--80% of them children or families traveling with children.
Correlation doesn't equal causation, but it sure as hell doesn't rule it out either. There's this thing called moral hazard. Only progressives and socialists are obtuse or dishonest enough to maintain that promising not to deport people who come here as children doesn't incentivize extremely poor people to send their children to the United States.
Sure, it's a relatively small number. But if they had just come from a bar or a Super Bowl party the presstitutes would be shitting themselves. "Sooper Spreaders!!!!"
“presstitutes”
Stolen.
This Sullum article sounds like a salt shaker.
shikha shikha shikha...

"Texas Has Hundreds of Thousands of Coronavirus Carriers. The Governor Is Worried About 'Hundreds' of COVID-Positive Migrants."
So lets see, according to Reason the way to fight covid is to double the number of carriers and infected people.
The more, the merrier.
This is the same Reason that has vociferously been agitating for lockdowns, mask mandates, mandatory quarantines, and skip tracers for Covid scofflaws.
The same old anti-citizen rhetoric from the Shikhaites.
Regarding every issue pertaining to illegal immigrants, the problem has NOTHING to do with how often they do or do not do something. It has everything to do with the fact that this is America. You were born here and you're entitled to God given natural rights. People who are not born here are not entitled to those rights. You can pretend all you want that they are, but that's how it is. When they commit crimes, 100% of those crimes were preventable because the people should not have been here in the first place. When they spread Covid, they should not have been here to spread it in the first place.
Why do we qualify natural rights upon citizenship? Because if we don't, then we would have to take a rather complicated moral position that citizenship is irrelevant as all people are citizens of the US and entitled to recognition of their rights. There are several hundred countries on this planet who would take serious issue with this interpretation.
If you try to have your cake and eat it too by pretending that citizenship doesn't matter, then you are setting up a tribal civil war. Why have any loyalty to this country if a politically convenient population decides to illegally immigrate? What is the point of being a citizen and paying taxes and working for the nation's collective good if the nation fucks you over to maintain the power of oligarchs?
I don't think you're capable of understanding this, but your tone-deafness has to stop sooner or later.
But, food trucks!
Something to ponder:
Natural rights are not contingent on citizenship. Everyone has them.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights..." True or False?
So there is nothing morally problematic about recognizing everyone's natural rights. It doesn't mean everyone is a citizen. Citizenship is akin to membership is a club. Citizens have MORE rights than non-citizens, such as the right to vote. But non-citizens don't have ZERO rights. They have natural rights just as everyone else does.
Personally I agree with you in an idealistic sense, but the problem is how we respect those natural rights in the real world. Natural rights have been perverted by our elected officials to mean entitlement spending and welfare programs, resulting in real transfers of wealth from citizens to non-citizens. We have to put our own citizens first, otherwise there's just no point in being part of this country. We've taken away the people's voices on matters of immigration. Nobody is allowed to say "I don't want more immigrants." Nobody can do anything to stop profiteering politicians from inviting illegal immigrants into their jurisdiction and abusing the Census to solidify their political monopoly. If you try to secede from this nonsense, we already know how that goes down. What remedy exists for the status quo?
I hope we can avoid it, but I don't see this issue being resolved peacefully.
Natural rights are not welfare and social security. Natural rights are things like the right to life, the right to speak freely, generally the right to live one's life as one sees fit without undue or burdensome authorities getting in your way. They don't depend on the Constitution. They don't depend on citizenship. Everyone has them. To throw out the concept of natural rights because some people abuse them and try to make them seem something they are not, is no better than to throw out the concept of self-defense because some people abuse guns.
So then why isn't the US at war with every single society which doesn't allow for freedoms listed in the BORs?
Could it be that the natural rights enumerated in the founding documents of US government can only pertain to US citizens, because expanding it outwards is idiotic?
It's impractical to try to protect these rights for everyone in the world. But if they're already IN our country...
As Ayn Rand said, we have the moral authority to intervene when a foreign government is mistreating its citizens. We do not however have the moral responsibility to do so.
Hey aren't you the obese piece of shit who was just telling us that everyone around you should be forced to wear a useless piece of cloth over their face because they might get you sick on account of your "natural right" to never be exposed to a respiratory virus because you're so fucking fat it could kill you? Lmfao.
When he was still using his cytotoxic handle he actually, literally, unironically, said that welfare should go to illegal instead of citizens because they are more morally deserving of government assistance.
"What is the point of being a citizen and paying taxes and working for the nation’s collective good if the nation fucks you over to maintain the power of oligarchs?"
Increasingly of late, that is a very good question. The answer of course, is that they'll kill you if you don't. But what if they plan on killing you for something else anyway?
What a fucking joke.
>>Greg Abbott's fear is hard to take seriously
oh but you and fucking Bailey are the top men with your chicken little bullshit all 2020. lol
One of the sadder aspects of The Fall of Reason (mag) is how very malleable Bailey has turned out to be. And he was one of the people whose (supposed) integrity made Reason so refreshing, once a month, back in the Long Ago...
judging by who continuously posts and writes here, none of us died despite Ron & his shofar of fear
No, Bailey has made many bad faith arguments, One of my favorites had been over fetal stem cell research arguing that why one should not consider a human embryo to have any moral value.
The issue is whether or not this is a public health problem, but whether or not the Biden administration has any principles or uses logic in its decisions. Calling the Governor a Neanderthal for opening up his economy, while at the same time knowingly allowing COVID positive illegals into the country (whether 10 or 10,000) is outrageous and illogical.
By the way, the Governor of Connecticut has announced a loosening restrictions that is almost identical to Texas' and Mississippi's. When can we expect Joe to call him a Neanderthal?
>>outrageous and illogical
only if you're outside the walls. is a perfect play otherwise.
Greg Abbott’s fear is hard to take seriously
Like you know anything about being taken seriously.
You mean "Having a country is against libertarian principles" isn't REALLY meant to be taken seriously? Waste of about 50 articles over the last four years, then.
An illegal immigrant, traveling through, is a much higher risk than a resident with the same disease. The resident might follow medical advice and stay home. The small number of illegals tested were at a bus station, preparing to board buses for long distance travel. If the percentage of positives carries over to the total number crossing illegally, then we are talking about thousands of carriers.
If they are traveling to NYC, they will be sharing that bus with 54 other people for over two days, with stops to mingle with others in as many as 8 different states.
They are almost a perfect vector for spread of Covid.
It is not crazy stereotyping to be concerned with diseases spread by people sneaking into the US. Legal immigrants are subject to health screenings, for good reasons. That is one of the reasons we have borders. Do you want to have to worry about polio again? Have you had your Yellow Fever vaccine?
Oh look. Texas politicians engage in some demagoguery.
And as seen by the comments here, this is why demagoguery works.
Texas: Even though the pandemic isn't over yet, we're going to lift all the COVID restrictions.
Biden: That's a dumb idea.
Texas: But but but ILLEGAL INVADERS! They have COVID too! What about them?
I mean, it's basically Jesse levels of 'argumentation'. Whataboutism as a knee-jerk response to whatever Team Blue does, along with a side helping of using brown people as scapegoats.
Texans who might be skeptical of the Governor's decision, or even those who might be slightly inclined to believe him, now instead of asking him hard questions like "what is the factual basis at this moment to make the decision to lift all restrictions", now are focused on the "real danger", the invading brown horde of plague carriers. The "others" who are the REAL threat, not the benevolent Real Murican politicians who are there to 'keep you safe' even as they can't explain why they are doing what they are doing.
I can explain why it works. Illegal immigrants aren't allowed to be here. It's really that simple. Doesn't matter if they have Covid or not. We shouldn't have to commit US taxpayer resources to ensure that illegal immigrants do or don't have Covid. It's the same reason why it's morally reprehensible that we pay for them in any capacity while shafting our own citizens. Hundreds of thousands of US children go remain unadopted each year, but nobody cares about some inner city crack babies or Appalachian trailer trash rednecks because it doesn't win them virtue points and votes. It's disgusting how we put foreigners before our own people.
Now if you really want to go down that path of truly merit based assessment where nothing else matters other than objective facts, I will be the first person to start the conversation about deporting every single non-white person from this country because the crime rate drops to nearly zero if we do it. Some things matter more than whether or not you're perfect. Individualism means recognizing the value of people for who they are and not just what they can do. I will always put the needs of my highly flawed countrymen ahead of foreigners. That's what it means to be in this together and to heal.
Nationalism and populism didn't appear out of nowhere.
It’s disgusting how we put foreigners before our own people.
Why do you think location of birth changes one's moral worth?
No - but I think my taxes and the taxes of other citizens should only be spent on securing US interests, not the interests of others.
Hey, remember the time when cytotoxic literally said that illegal aliens deserved welfare more than Americans?
Hey, remember in this fucking thread when cytotoxic literally said that Gregg Abbot is a murderous fool for easing COVID restrictions in his state while simultaneously telling us that restricting the entry or movement of COVID-carrying migrants is a violation of fundamental human rights?
Hey, you ever how notice how cytotoxic is a mendacious half-retarded fatass piece of shit?
Oh look, all I had to do was scroll down a few posts to find cytotoxic lecturing us that lifting COVID restrictions is murderous illogic right after telling us how natural rights mean the total absence of any restrictions on international movement, even in cases of contagious disease.
Who gives a fuck, Biden has no right dumping people into the country who don't belong. Period.
Hopefully we regain some sanity, take back Congress and the White House and start removing liberal and leftie democrats from power permanently.
This is not complicated:
Texans belong in Texas, so whatever risk they pose is just reality.
Illegal aliens do not belong in Texas, so the risk they pose is unnecessary.
I like that
Texans belong in Texas.
Stay there.
Or what, passive aggressive pussy?
Funny thing, I haven't noticed many Texans fleeing their state by the hundreds of thousands year after year for a decade or more after they've voted to turn it into a political and economic basket case. I wonder why there's no term like "Masshole" for Texans who move to neighboring states and fuck them up with their retarded politics?
As a proponent of looser borders and freer immigration this is one of the stupidest stories I've ever read. This kind of journalism just insures out cause will never win. Fuck, do the writers think of the optics before writing dogshit stories like this one? Listen when you are in a hole you don't keep digging. When you have a pandemic you don't let in more infected people, no matter how small the number. Let's day this was a hell of a lot more dangerous, say a mutant re-emetged smallpox pandemic (fatality rate 30-70% as opposed to under 1%) would Sollum be saying oh an extra 108 disease carriers isn't anything to worry about?
No, the proper course is not to give in to the cheap demagoguery of the right. The reason why they are so upset about "illegal immigrants" spreading COVID (while they themselves seem mostly unconcerned with it), is the same reason why they are so upset about "illegal immigrants" taking welfare (while they themselves don't seem to mind it so much for themselves) - it is not because they really give a shit about COVID or welfare, it's because they're FOREIGNERS. It is right to call out xenophobic demagoguery masquerading as concern trolling.
I am glad you can read their minds and know what they are thinking. Demagogue much? You accuse others of demagoguing by demagoguing them. Hypocrite much?
Yeah, that's it - everyone who disagrees with you is a racist. It's not that spending tax dollars on illegal immigrants while our economy tanks is a horrible idea, it's that they're all racists.
You really are a POS.
everyone who disagrees with you is a racist.
Not what I said.
It’s not that spending tax dollars on illegal immigrants while our economy tanks is a horrible idea, it’s that they’re all racists.
You know what? It IS a bad idea. But you tell me why Team Red gets so emotionally agitated and animated about spending tax dollars on illegal immigrants when it is a drop in the bucket compared to all of the bullshit spending out there. What's the reason? Why is it THIS spending that drives so much emotion and anger on Team Red?
Uh oh cytotoxic, that sounds an awful lot like whataboutism, doesn't it?
Sure, spending money on illegal aliens is a bad idea but WHATABOUTWHATABOUTWHATABOUT. Remember how whataboutism is your standard defense for being called out being a hypocrite and a liar?
Maybe you could tell me why you have been in a histrionic panic for 13 consecutive months pushing lockdowns, mask mandates, and forcible vaccination to protect your waddling fat ass from being exposed to a respiratory virus no riskier than a bad flu but now oppose placing any restrictions on the movement of COVID-infected illegal aliens? What’s the reason? Why is it THIS restriction that drives so much emotion and anger from you?
You are a mendacious asshole on the same intellectual level as Tony and the Rev.
The proper course is to give in to the cheap demagoguery of the left. Like spending 13 months writing breathless panic-mongering walls of text about how liberty must be suspending because WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC!!!!!!!!! including castigating the governor of Texas as a fool and murderer for easing the lockdowns in his state, then proclaiming that it's xenophobic racist nationalism to impose the same restrictions you have been defending for 13 months on illegal aliens.
And this entire episode is just a perfect microcosm of how right-wing media works nowadays.
So, Biden reverses Trump's "Remain In Mexico" policy and permits asylum seekers to actually apply for asylum in the country that they are seeking asylum in. Which is, by the way, more consistent with international treaties concerning asylum. So these people who are coming here are not jumping the border and evading the authorities. They are following the legal procedure for applying for asylum.
So what a sane media outfit might do, is to have a discussion or a dialogue about what to do about asylum seekers during a pandemic. Honest people can disagree about the best course of action.
But instead, what we get, is (1) a conflation of asylum seekers with illegal immigrants, and (2) hysterical demagoguery against them as a group for "invading" and spreading plague in the Heartland of Real Murica, to whip up fear of them.
And of course all of this is just a total deflection from having to defend the proposition of lifting COVID restrictions at this point in time. He says that the data supports his decision. Good, so then let's talk about that. But instead he's going to blame the furriners for what happens instead of his own decisions.
(1) Almost none of these people are refugees. They are economic migrants. For all intents and purposes, they should not be applying for asylum anywhere. You honestly believe thousands of South Americans are facing systematic and religious persecution?
(2) Asylum is usually granted to the first country refugees arrive to. But most of these migrants want to bypass Mexico to seek asylum in the US. So either they're not REALY refugees, or Mexico is as a threat to them as their homeland.
(3) Under normal circumstances, thousands of "asylum seekers" crowding the border of one nation all at once is going to create serious logistical issue. In a pandemic, it should NOT be happening. This. is. common. sense.
An argument in favor of massive influx of outsiders in a pandemic is based on morality, not reason. It's defiance of science to say that a nation of America's size should continue to admit as many people as they want to in a pandemic they're only start to recover from. Korea beat covid for the most part, but they still impose 2 week quarantine on any outsider who arrive there. If you're not Korean then you have no say in the matter, you either don't go there or you abide by their rules.
And the inconvenient reality is that America's demographics is one of the reasons why we're struggling to get out of the quagmire. Big states have tons of different people cramped into their own meta societies and have effectively become covid buffet zones. Most Latinos oppose migrant influx. Do you think they want thousands of Hondurans to keep on coming, moving across Mexico (another covid zone), cooped up in facilities in packs? They'll be gangbusters for the future economy when schools aren't open and physical locations continue to close?
It's so fun when you step all over your own dick and contradict yourself WITHIN YOUR FUCKING POST.
I mean you've already done it a dozen times on the same page, but shit, you finally got it condensed enough to fit the whole heap of self-contradiction into one single post.
While you've spent 13 months lecturing us about how failing to wear a face diaper is literally killing people and we should expect to be forced to wear one if we won't do so voluntarily, and in THIS VERY POST castigating the governor of Texas for lifting restrictions on traveling, you demagogue about natural rights and free movement for illegal aliens (yes, that's what we call people who are present in the country without legal status; no, entering the country illegally outside of a border crossing and then abusing the asylum system to get a temporary reprieve when you have no chance of ever obtaining asylum because you are not an asylee fleeing from a dangerous country is not a moral or legal loophole)
I dont care if he is "right" or not. I dont want any more humans in our overflowing cities and towns, and any excuse used by anybody in power to keep them out is fine by me.
So if I move from California to Texas to overflow your cities and towns you would stop ‘em at the Texas border right?
You are free to move around from state to state (presuming you are here legally and not a registered sex offender)
But it doesn’t really have anything to do with overcrowding. Some places are actually underpopulated and have policies welcoming to immigrants.
Texas is expanding mostly due to Americans moving in and expanding job opportunities but it is a good thing for the state. If immigrants are given work and residency permits they will also contribute to economic growth. I don’t think Texas is running out of room.
The writer of this juvenile essay may be a bubble or two off, but it's good to see the commenters are a lot more rational.
A very, very dishonest and disappointing article, almost a poster case for "how to lie with statistics".
First, Brownsville is not the only place where illegal migrants are crossing the border. There were 100,000 apprehended who crossed from Mexico in February. At a 6.8% active COVID-19 rate, that would be 6,800 infected people. How many tens of thousands more crossed without being apprehended?
And if the daily case rate in Texas is 6,600, that would strongly argue for a number of active cases well under 100,000. The CDC reports that in most cases, the person is not infectious after 10 days, and given that it may be a day or two before being tested, it could be as few as 50,000 active, potentially dangerous, cases in Texas. So potentially 10,000 more from illegal migrants represents a significant additional risk.
Don't let your burning desire for hordes of low cost labourers blind you to actual risks.
Don't worry, there are only 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, as there have been since 2004, 17 years ago. They rotate out every couple years, like a tour of duty.
But US citizens returning from abroad can be turned away unless they have proof of recent negative Covid testing. And it's not just a Texas matter. An NBC reporter interviewing people let across the border in the vague hope they'll return for immigration hearings came across a Honduran woman who tested positive in Brownsville, which had no authority to secure her in quarrantine, and listened to her state she was getting on a bus to N Carolina. How many might she infect on the bus, at stops along the way, and at her final destination. She is but one example in the article of this nitwit hypocritical policy giving non-citizens forcing their way into the country more rights than citizens.
Can you remember when Reason was a Libertarian's magazine??
As I am old, it will not be too long before I will not remember when Reason was a magazine I would heartily recommend. These days I wonder about keeping my subscription. All that saves them is a lack of choice.
Is moderate reform to immigration laws and procedures still a thing? Or is pretty much just down to: Let em All In/ Shoot em All on sight, anymore?
Maybe we can all agree that the US should stop helping to make central and South America hellholes via our drug policies, regime changes, insurgencies/counter insurgencies?
Don’t seem to get waves of refugees at the door when you’re not bordered by hellholes.
I mean we don’t seem to have much of an issue with Canadians swarming our borders. But we probably should. Before we wake up speaking French... all sticky with maple syrup...
Because Canadians are more “like us” (wink wink).
They love peanut butter ice cream, hanging out with their buds, and think the Dio Black Sabbath was pound for pound better than the Ozzy one?
Srsly, though. I do wonder how the self-loathing pale faces who welcome massive demographic changes are going to feel when our country is suddenly WAY more religious. But I guess they think they got a plan for that.
I am somewhat religious and close to open borders on a reasonable basis on libertarian grounds. Ok we have a public health issue now. I would start with a pathway for those already here.
Legal work and residency permits which can be renewed. If people can work legally everyone benefits.
I don’t care about demographics.
Well, as long as you’re consistent about it, then at least I can wrap my head around it.
Lately I’ve actually come across a lot of younger white liberals who can’t wait for whites to be a minority, and simultaneously can’t stand religious “superstition” being allowed to influence anybody. They think religious people are starchy collared white people from Nebraska. Kind of forgetting about Black America being the MOST religious. And immigrants will only inject more faiths into the mix.
Which of course underscores the conservatives not really recognizing the fact that if they didn’t attack these folks on their way in they’d probably find a natural ally. They’re likely to be more industrious and traditionalist than the natives.
It’s the crappy economy that polarizes everything. I’m definitely sympathetic to immigration reform, but I find a lot of the libertarian arguments on that topic weak and harmful (waving off national sovereignty and “it’s jobs no one wants anyway!”).
Absent Corona and government spending and the economy is just fine. Too bad there is no vaccine for government.
Collectivists treat people like objects to be traded so ‘their’ side wins elections or influences policy. Or even worse some kind of racial or religious category to be manipulated. Then they value people based on economic factors so that a software engineer is of greater human value than a farm worker. There is no thought to individual rights and human dignity.
This disaster was caused when Sullum's hero Joe Biden reversed Trump's border policies, and invited all of the poorest people in the world to come into America through Mexico, which could result in millions attempting the journey during the next nine months (as Biden also promised them free housing, food, healthcare, education) and will then let them vote.
And now the Feds are loading those kids in cages to max capacity as well.
Talk about super spreader events.
But don't tell Sullum.
I usually never comment on this subject. Let me clear this up though. If you live in Texas, and are a citizen you do have a right to live there or have a visa or green card ,
These are asylum seekers so they technically have no right to live here unless they are granted asylum. By law and treaty they do have a right to be here until they have a hearing as to their status.
Republican governor reads off old Republican playbook script. Film at 11.
It the hypocrisy stupid! Reason is so out of touch.
It's more than just hypocrisy. It is also naked double standards.

Sullum,
What exactly is a "coronavirus carrier," who defined that term, and if they are infectious how long do they stay that way?
Also, how, if at all, do they differ from a person who is merely "Covid positive"?
Because your article offers no substantial explanation for the headline.
It's hysterical trash.
I think they are the same thing. You are testing for the virus itself. You are a carrier if you test positive until you test negative. It just emphasizes that you can potentially infect others.
Then why the different word choices for each group?
Also, and no offense, I do not care what you think.
Sullum is the one who needs to explain what he meant by characterizing the two in quite different terms.
¡Yo! ¡Jake! "Biden 'Inaccurately ...", but Governor "Abbot [is] 'Misleading' ... "? No bias or "[Mis]Leading the witness" journalism there. Nope, "Not a smidgeon" of it. Don't ever dare to quote, use nor infer veracity to any "Facts" attributable to the Center of Disease Control (CDC) again. Why? Easy, if you track the steady increase in "Eradicated" diseases during the last 30+ years and the increase in border crossings by un-inspected, unverified and undocumented Illegal Aliens with the CDC casting a blind eye during the very same timeframe. They were and obviously still remain unable, apparently, to see, let alone connect the dots, it's readily apparent that the protection of American's health is subordinate to political and corporate interests. What do you, my dear Horatio, consider "Covid Carriers"? Those who are actively contagious and still shedding the virus, or those who've tested positive for having been infected in the past but are no longer showing any symptoms and thus, by such measures, possibly being immune. Or, in your mind, is everyone a "Typhoid Mary", eh, "Karen"?
As a trucker, when I was hauling “Haz-Mat”, the test for organic peroxide protection with a mask was simple: put on the mask in a room and then someone would open a flask of Banana Oil. If you could smell it, you were not protected. I know not many people have banana oil laying around but mouthwash should do. Have someone use a mouthwash, put one [or two] of the currently popular Covid masks on and then come into the room where you’re at. If you cannot smell it, you’re likely protected. Otherwise (and, most likely, since those mouthwash molecules are larger), … guess what?
ya memang virus korona sedang membuat resah
So you're saying that since there are already carriers here we should add even more.....
I think first stop for these illegal aliens should be this authors home where he can shake there hand and welcome them. Invite them in. Have dinner. Spend the night. Meet the family. If he expects all to welcome with open arms he should demonstrate so we can do it right.
Politics and stupidity rear its head once again at 'reason'. As per WHO guidelines and simple common sense, infected individuals with a highly contagious disease should not be simply released on their own recognizance into the public at-large. There's a reason why some countries, i.e., New Zealand, have low infection levels: because they have the sense to control their borders and focus on the infections already in the country instead of firmly inserting their head into the dirt, Mr. Sullum. Pull your head out of your political 'rabbit-hole.'
Anything that reduces the number of immigrants is OK with me
I'm sure all those illegal immigrants are wearing masks and socially distancing, so I don't see what the problem is. If there is an outbreak of COVID-19 cases, that's just what Texans deserve for not obeying their betters.
Dear Sullum, I hope you read these comments and learn to better state the nuisance of a situation. Besides the multiple comments discussing the spread potential of a Covid positive individual getting on a bus and heading across state or country, look at a Covid map of Texas. El Paso, Cameron, and Hidalgo aren't the biggest bubbles unless you starting looking at numbers per population. Do you know what those counties have in common? They are all on the border. They also currently have higher Covid/hospitalization ratios then Houston and Dallas. So maybe, just maybe, Covid positive border crossers are more then a small part of the problem.
So lets see, according to Reason the way to fight covid is to double the number of carriers and infected people.
The point is that the fundamental, non-negotiable principle of Koch / Reason libertarianism is open borders.
#ImmigrationAboveAll
I think the point is that if an illegal gives you Covid then you deserve to get sick and die. If an American gives you Covid it’s a tragedy that should have been prevented but wasn’t because some bad people think differently than Reason writers.
Pretty much. And if I had to choose between liar who wants business to function and liar who wants business to be illegal I think I know which one is the lesser evil. At least by own my metrics, I'm sure some Communist Karens will disagree.
+1, straight to the chase

The issue that migrants have COVID and are freely coming across the border is to point at the left's hypocrisy. It is not really a problem. It could even be an excuse to hide the real problem. The real problem, is massive migrant immigration that pushes the majority LEFT, in the United States. What that means is communism + legalized drugs + prostitution. Now that's a great win for people like Sullum, because their priorities get settled straight. For the rest of us it's not. Look at this map:
https://i0.wp.com/www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/2019.02.28_Bill-Frey_Map1-final-version.png
As you can see, most of the counties bordering Mexico are BLUE. This is why dems want mass immigration. So they can win elections, shape the culture, and make their dreams reality at our expense, as usual. And make no mistake, pushing the majority left, pushes the right left. Because the only way the "right" can win elections to to appeal to more more left leaning individuals. This is not new, we have been moving "left" for hundreds of years. The problem is when is it too far? How much further left do people want to go? And the answer seems to be there is no limit. We have people that want their future to be total government oversight, and a landscape of impulsive and hedonistic pleasure. It is literally, the novel, "Brave new world" by Aldous Huxley. Here you have Sullem advocating for "legalize all drugs!" And ENB with "legalize all prostitution!" and where are the libertarians here advocating for responsibility? Nowhere to be seen.
To be clear, we’re talking about illegals, right? Not legitimate migrants?
Reason always does that. So dishonest. Sullum is definitely one of the least trustworthy writers.
