San Francisco Residents Balk at Decision To Scrub Lincoln, Washington, Feinstein from School Names
Plus: Smoking rates stop falling, ACLU defends man banned from library over Trump poem, and more...

Changes to school names in San Francisco have gone too far for even some of the city's many progressive residents. The changes—which wiped out the names of historical leaders like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Paul Revere, and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) from public school names—earned condemnation from San Francisco Mayor London Breed.
"This is an important conversation to have, and one that we should involve our communities, our families, and our students," said Breed in a Tuesday statement.
What I cannot understand is why the School Board is advancing a plan to have all these schools renamed by April, when there isn't a plan to have our kids back in the classroom by then.
Let's bring the same urgency and focus on getting our kids back in the classroom, and then we can have that longer conversation about the future of school names.
On Tuesday, the San Francisco Board of Education voted 6-1 in favor of the name changes, which affect 44 schools.
School board members said the names being removed from schools were figures who "engaged in the subjugation and enslavement of human beings; or who oppressed women, inhibiting societal progress; or whose actions led to genocide; or who otherwise significantly diminished the opportunities of those among us to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
"This is a moral message. It's a message to our families, our students and our community. It's not just symbolic," school board member Mark Sanchez said.

The New York Times collected comments from some San Franciso parents. "Liberals by definition believe that government can do good things. If we do laughable things then we make a mockery of the movement," pediatrician and parent Adam Davis, who describes himself as "a strong Elizabeth Warren liberal," told the paper. "I don't know anybody personally who doesn't think it's embarrassing. [It's] a caricature of what people think liberals in San Francisco do."
Noah Griffin told the Times he didn't object to Lincoln and Washington being excluded, but thinks Feinstein's name should be able to stay.
A petition to stop the changes has gained nearly 10,000 signatures.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Indiana is suing the state's Jackson County over a man being banned from a public library over a pro-Trump poem. The man, Richard England, "says he was banned from the library in November after he wrote what his attorney called a 'short and unoffensive' poem about former President Donald Trump," WFYI explains.
England left the poem for a library employee with whom he was friends.
"When that individual was not there, he left it on a basket in the circulation desk," said attorney Gavin Rose.
"When he got home, he had a voicemail from an officer with the Seymour police department saying the library essentially trespassed him," Rose added.
The lawsuit, filed in Indiana's Southern District court, asks a judge to lift the ban.

Today a large crowd of American citizens gathered in protest at our nation's capitol in support of President Trump to express their dissatisfaction with the validity of the elections. During the protest a small faction of the group pushed through the capitol barriers and clashed with the capitol police inside. A woman was shot and killed. The cause of the shooting is under investigation.
Parts of the capitol were vandalized including broken windows and doorways. Speaker Pelosi's chamber was broken into and a laptop stolen. The Senators and Congress people were escorted out of the building to ensure their safety.
The conflict was quelled in a few hours. Some arrests were made, others will be forthcoming with further investigation. Unfortunately, 4 other lives were lost, 3 protestors and one of the Capitol Police officers. Sources say the officer was hit with a fire extinguisher, was taken away from the scene and died later. His cause of death is under investigation and his name will be release following notification of the family.
There will be further details as the investigation continues.
I'm going to withhold judgment until I see crystal clear video and a full investigation by an independent prosecutor.

The Board also voted to change the name of Roosevelt Middle School, even though no one was sure whether it was named after Theodore Roosevelt or Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Better safe than sorry. It's pretty remarkable, when you look at the political landscape of the early 30s, how many New Deal Democrats actually started their careers as TR-type reformist Republicans.
McKinley's career arc is striking that way, in that when he was in Congress, he was very much an anti-business Progressive crusader in the mold of Sherman, attacking Cleveland for his laissez faire attitudes, and then in his run for President he was out-flanked on the left by actual-Socialist Bryan and became, to Bryan and his supports, a "pro-Business" establishment Capitalist.
That's long struck me as the pivotal moment right there - McKinley's presidency and the implosion of the Republican Party in the wake of Teddy.
I suspect Mark Hanna's sponsorship of McKinley's presidential campaigns had a lot to do with that.
I should add, you're also right about TR's splitting of the Republican ticket in 2016. No one is perfect (and you probably can't name schools after Jesus anyway, because of the Establishment clause), so it's foolhardy to name a school after any person. Even if they seem honest and upright and have accomplished great works, someone might someday find an insensitive tweet or text message they sent once.
So safer to to just give the schools a number and be done with it.

He was completely incompetent during the AIDS epidemic which led to such things as schools turning off water fountains and was also one of the key people involved in the peanut allergy explosion based on guidance to not ever expose children to peanuts.

- In 2014 FDA imposed the Deeming Regulation that banned nicotine vapor companies from truthfully claiming vaping is far less harmful than cigarette smoking, banned the sale of any vapor product not approved by FDA (which still hasn't approved any vapes, but hasn't yet removed them from the market), and required vape companies to spend >$50 million to submit an application to FDA.
- The CDC, US SG, FDA and all state/local health agencies falsely claimed (since 2016) the increase in teen vaping was due to nicotine vapes, when their own data repeatedly found that most of the increase was due to THC vapes (as teens began vaping THC instead of smoking pot).
- A year ago, FDA banned the sale of many flavored nicotine vapor products by falsely claiming they were addicting children.
In sum, cigarette smoking stopped declining because corrupt officials at CDC, FDA, US SG and state/local health agencies lied about and aggressively lobbied to ban sales and use of far less harmful vapor products.
Big Pharma financed most of this lobbying campaign (to protect their sales of Nicorette, Nicoderm, Chantix and drugs used to treat sick and dying smokers) by giving hundreds of millions of dollars to the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and American Academy of Pediatrics.
The worlds largest cigarette manufacturers (i.e. Altria, Philip Morris International, British American Tobacco, RJ Reynolds, Imperial Tobacco and Japan Tobacco International) all endorsed the false claims and anti vapor policies by Big Pharma, CDC, US SG and FDA because reducing vapor sales also boosted their cigarette sales.
