A Thai court has sentenced Anchan Preelert, 65, to 43 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to 29 counts of sharing and posting clips on YouTube and Facebook that were critical of the monarchy. This is the longest sentenced ever imposed by a court for violating the country's lese majeste law. She originally faced up to 87 years in prison, but the court decided to be lenient with her because she acknowledged her crimes.

Today it's the press and social media companies that go after you if you talk about the king or would-be king, or his son's laptop.

      1. Jerryskids   4 years ago

It wouldn't be so bad if it were just the press and the social media companies, but when you can't find a job because nobody will hire you, no banks or financial services companies will deal with you, nobody will extend you credit, no companies want to deal with you at all, and your social ostracism is all perfectly legal because these are private companies (even if it is the government "nudging" them to not do business with suspicious characters such as yourself) well, it's just as thorough a job of cutting you off from society as if you'd been stuck in prison.

        1. apedad   4 years ago

If all those institutions don't want to deal with you, then maybe YOU are the problem.

I quit working at shoprite to work online and with a little effort I easily bring in around $45 to 85 per/h. Without a doubt, this is the easiest and most financially rewarding job I've ever had. I actually started 6 months ago and this has totally changed my life.

And if the King of England sends troops over to your colony to shoot you dead, maybe you're the problem, too.

“Private companies” should be in quotations, because they’re not really private.

Many have been the beneficiaries of crony capitalism, with government regulation knocking away their competitors. In fact, they rely on it and have become less concerned with serving customers because of it. Fat and lazy and mean.

Many have also been the beneficiaries of municipal funds through pension fund stock purchases or service contracts. Without it, their profits would tumble, as they would be cut off from the easy money necessary because they’ve become so fat and lazy and mean.

Twitter, Amazon, Facebook, AIG, etc. all benefit significantly from the government, so it’s absurd to consider them “private companies”. They don’t deserve that moniker.

So, a death sentence . Just a slow one. Asia and the middle east have the most f'ed up counties. And we in the west are the ones called racist among many other things.

  6. John C. Randolph   4 years ago

I would just like to state for the record, that the king of Thailand is a piece of shit unless he immediately pardons this woman.

Even the most cursory familiarity with history will show that the phrase "rightful king" is an oxymoron.
