Trump Will Adopt Biden Plan for Speeding Up COVID-19 Vaccinations
Vaccine booster doses currently being reserved will be released immediately to inoculate more Americans.

Last week, President-elect Joe Biden announced that his incoming administration would not keep COVID-19 vaccines idling in freezers as boosters for folks who have already been inoculated with the first of two doses. Instead, his team would release all doses now and count on future production to provide the second doses in the coming weeks. This way, far more people could get some initial protection from the virus—a particularly timely consideration, as diagnosed COVID-19 cases have been soaring throughout the U.S. Additionally, it is urgent to get more Americans vaccinated as soon as possible before the spread of a much more contagious variant makes the pandemic even worse.

Much to their credit, Trump administration officials will reportedly announce later today that they will adopt the Biden administration's vaccine rollout plan in which doses currently being reserved will be made available almost immediately. In addition, instead of insisting on the complicated recommendations which prioritize groups such as health care workers, nursing home residents, and a variety of "essential workers" for vaccination, the Trump administration will urge states to make vaccinations available to Americans aged 65 and older. If the goal is to dramatically reduce mortality and stress on the health care system, this makes sense since this age group accounts for around 80 percent of COVID-19 deaths and 45 percent of hospitalizations.
In the meantime, as Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna continue to ramp up their vaccine production, fingers are crossed that the Johnson & Johnson one-shot COVID-19 vaccine will prove effective and become available in the next few weeks. If approved, the company says that it is "on track" to deliver hundreds of millions of doses in the first half of 2021.

So millions of people will never get the second dose and the first round of vaccinations is more for show...
Believe or not they're making more vaccine as we speak. So when people need a second round it will be there.
Well, there is only a short window of time between when the first dose is administered and when the second dose ought to be administered. Depending on the vaccine, it's either 3 weeks or 4 weeks. So if someone gets the first dose and then has to wait a long time to get the second dose, no one really knows how effective that will be.
Now many people will actually go back for the second dose? Seriously. Better to use what they've got than reserve it for people who won't bother to come back?
For it to work right you have to take the second within a certain time of the first.
I got the first dose on the 5th and have an appointment for the second verse on 2/2. I guess I’m in limbo now.
Neither Biden nor Trump is capable of taking a piss without getting it all over their shoes.

I know; this is absurd. The vaccines were shown in clinical trials to be effective based on two doses at specified intervals. Whatever happened to "follow the science"? I guess, as we already knew, you only follow it when it's politically expedient.
The one thing you've got going for you is your state. Since you already got the first dose on 1/5, I'll assume you live somewhere that's run halfway intelligently. They should be able to ensure that the second dose is available even if the federal government doesn't.

Those people receiving one dose will have 80% immunity. If we are making decisions of how to apply scarce resources, then getting X people to 80% immunity is much better than getting X * .5 people to 95% immunity.
Whether or not the dose is ready in 3 - 4 weeks, this is a better policy.
But is it good enough to get us back to "normal"?
Everyone has their own concept of normal, but I'm thinking things like no more masks, we can go to hockey games or baseball games or concerts or the theater. That sort of stuff. I don't think that 52% or 80% is gonna be good enough for them to let us go. Shit, they're already saying we need to keep it up with everyone vaccinated?
Those are just estimates, this method was never studied. All the studies involved people getting both doses.
For all we know that 80% immunity lasts a month and then goes away since you never got the second shot. We literally don't know, and having some politician wing this with no scientific backing should be concerning.
Getting no dose at all gives you 80% immunity to getting any symptoms.
You cannot say one dose gives 80 percent immunity because a) you're talking about two different vaccines, and b) only one of the vaccines (Moderna) actually has single-dose data as part of its clinical trials. And in the case of Moderna it did show roughly 80 percent protection after the single dose, but this was a very small sample of 2,000 people and we don't know at all how long that 80 percent protection might last, but it would be likely to be shorter than with two doses.
Inadequately vaccinating people could also "help" the virus get worse by fostering the development of vaccine-resistant strains.
This is a bad idea based on media science. Just follow the damn regimen that was established in the clinical trials. If you're not going to do that, why even bother doing the trials? They could have just started shooting people up with this stuff months ago and then just stood back and watched to see what happened.
Oh, I know they're making more. I also know who is distributing it, and I'm not optimistic about their efficiency.
There is significant evidence that one dose is fairly effective.
No, there isn't.
Pfizer’s vaccine, FDA staff also said data submitted appeared to show the vaccine was at least 52% effective before the second dose and 82% effective for the combined group of people who took one or two doses.
50% is the the best guess effectiveness of the Flu vaccine in a given year. So I'd say yes.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/08/fda-says-pfizer-covid-vaccine-data-did-not-raise-safety-concerns.html
Yes, 82% in the whole study group, the vast majority of whom got two doses.
Except for the 45 health care workers at that hospital in San Jose who caught COVID-19 after the first shot. They blamed that on an inflatable Christmas costume.
And the vaccine per Moderna lasts a year. Which is why they wanted to separate the money from the government to shipping/buys/distribution.
300 million a year every year is a lot of money.

The SleepyJoe wisdom will save us all!
Apparently, the makers of vaccine are now confident they can produce enough doses that logisticians do not have to worry about keeping doses in inventory in case of a shortfall. You know darn well that if Trump had released the vaccines before this was determined, he would have been accused of, what, "inciting the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans."
https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/12/fda-documents-show-pfizer-covid-vaccine-protects-after-1-dose
"In November, Pfizer said that after two doses given 3 weeks apart, the vaccine's efficacy was 95%. But according to the FDA analysis, strong protection of about 82% occurred after the first doses and was 52% between the two doses."
Some number crunching actuarial is gonna have to figure this one out.
Taking the first dose give you 82% but that decays to 52% until the second dose, which then jacks you to 95%.
So if you delay that second dose or skip it altogether, I read that as saying you never get above 52%. The fact that it decays from 82% to 52% in 2-3 weeks---do we know if effectiveness decays beyond the 52% the longer you wait for that second dose?
The psychology of this is that the motivation to get the second dose is going to be a lot less than to get the first dose...I think we're going to have landfills filled with unused vaccine.
Of course. The pandemic will be over as soon as SleepyJoe steps into the Oval Office.
I’m guessing you mean this sarcastically, but I'm willing to bet Biden handles the pandemic with much aplomb, especially compared to the Orange Dump.
In terms of life experience out here in the world it’ll be so close to the same that we won’t perceive much difference.
The only difference will be tone - Biden will maximize fear while Trump tried to minimize it, as Biden has someone to blame it on, Trump did not.

Biden's plan is the same as Trumps for the most part Dummy. Just more bailouts for lockdowns.
I only wonder if Trump botched the national response so badly, why are the UK and other countries in trouble now? Why is California, which went its own way?
I'd be happy to crunch for you. The data analysts measured outcomes at different times.
With illness occurring after dose 1 and before dose 2, it was 52% protective (that is, the rate of illness was 52% lower in the vaccine group compared to the placebo group). Starting 7 days after the second dose, and continuing to the end of the observation period, the effectiveness was 95%. Then they totaled up all the illnesses from anytime after the first dose (and almost all of the participants completed the 2-dose protocol) and the overall effectiveness was 82%.
You're just looking at two different figures. The 95% is best when evaluating the actual effectiveness - once you have reached the point where both recommended doses are in your system and a week has elapsed for it to kick in. The 82% figure could be looked at as a more practical number evaluating the effectiveness after the start of the series, knowing it will look a little lower because a few cases will occur before the body has had a chance to fully respond.
You're probably right that doses might be wasted if they push them out faster than they can be administered, or if people get the idea they don't need the second dose. We don't know the long-term effectiveness of one dose.
Is no one listening to the experts? What does the science say? Or are we going to pretend suddenly that Trump and Biden are epidemiologists?
the experts are all against this. FDA has been saying the admin couldn't do this since December since that's not how they conducted the trials. nut doesn't matter in two weeks noone will give a fuck about the experts as Joe Biden will have his doctor wife telling us how it's going to be.
See big government works.
Until it comes to everyone's attention that 80% of the population isn't going to fit into size-10 pants and then we can argue with each other for another 50-years about whether to make size-9 or size-11.
Although several million Americans attained immunity via vaccines this past month, exponentially more (i.e. 10+ times) Americans have acquired immunity via covid infection (during the same time).
By the time 10% of Americans receive covid vaccines, herd immunity will have already protected most Americans from covid in thousands of communities, hundreds of counties and dozens of states. But Big Pharma, Democrats and left wing propagandists (including Bailey) continue to deceive Americans to believe that herd immunity can/will only be attained via mass vaccinations.
Many studies (including ones by CDC and TX Health Dept) have found/estimated that 3 – 10 times more Americans have been infected with covid than have tested positive.
Herd immunity occurs rapidly after two thirds of people (in families, workplaces, communities, counties and/or states) have been infected or vaccinated, but a majority will be immune once half have been infected or vaccinated, which is now occurring in thousands of communities, hundreds of counties and dozens of states.
US counties with the highest rates of positively tested covid cases, which appear within days or weeks of achieving herd immunity, long before vaccines will have an impact. (Data as of 1/7/2021)

So far, 7.00% of Americans have tested positive for covid.
Those % are not what you think they are. The denominator of this % is 'those who have been tested by a PCR test'. Not a random sample of the population. Not an antibody test. I can only assume that duplicates and multiple tests on the same person have been excluded.
At core, the high %'s here are an indicator of an absence of testing in those locations. Not of the prevalence of the disease.
JFree is incorrect. These are the percentages of people (per county and state) that have tested positive for covid since last March.
Holman Jenkins amplified my argument in today's WSJ column at
https://www.wsj.com/articles/maximize-the-vaccine-11610494003?mod=opinion_lead_pos9
excerpt
Sen. Rand Paul was assailed for tweeting that his own natural infection was more than 99% protective against future illness, compared with 94.5% for a vaccine. He was not recommending people go out and indiscriminately spread the disease. But once you accept that we’re not just one or two preachments away from solving the problem of Covid with mask-wearing, it’s time to be grateful for the one upside of infection. “Herd immunity” was a taboo term when paired with the word “strategy” but needs to rehabilitated now as a description of the goal that both vaccine and natural spread are helping us achieve.
The U.S. will soon reliably be vaccinating a million people a day but natural infections, by conservative estimate, were already putting a million a day in the U.S. on the path to natural immunity, though only a fifth of them showed up for testing.
Either kind of immune response is considered almost sure to prevent serious illness from future infection. Less certain is whether either also prevents transmission. But as epidemiologists such as Yale’s Harvey Risch and Brown’s Ashish Jha independently predicted, new cases in the Dakotas are starting to fall precipitously with perhaps half their populations having experienced Covid 19.
The practical implications are obvious. Don’t spend vaccine in the short term on people who have already been exposed if at all possible. A second implication: Unlike other countries, the U.S. has been strangely resolute in pretending that “confirmed cases” are the measure of the epidemic. Seldom has there been a clearer test of how the media sets the agenda for politicians. The press repeats this misleading statistic a thousand times a day to no real purpose, leaving us only less certain where we stand in the herd-immunity race. Underplaying the disease’s true prevalence, we have (without realizing it) conditioned people to be less careful even as we preach at them to be more careful. We cause them to underestimate their exposure risk and overestimate their death risk. Now we’ve put ourselves in the weird position of being unready to use vaccines optimally to stop the epidemic as soon as possible. We find it hard even to admit to ourselves that natural immunity is helping to bring our goal within reach.
And then they will conclude that the vaccine worked, and roll out a new one every year.
"we continue to strongly recommend that health care providers follow the FDA-authorized dosing schedule for each COVID-19 vaccine. "
"Those participants who did not receive two vaccine doses at either a three-or four-week interval were generally only followed for a short period of time, such that we cannot conclude anything definitive about the depth or duration of protection after a single dose of vaccine from the single dose percentages reported by the companies. "

Can we stop pretending that any politician "follows the science"?
Much to their credit, Trump administration officials will reportedly announce later today that they will adopt the Biden administration's vaccine rollout plan in which doses currently being reserved will be made available almost immediately
So the 25% usage rate in states will what? waste more vials. Last I read NY was throwing away 2 out of every 10 doses because their allowed people getting vaccinated wasn't in big enough groups.
Contrary to this article, the FDA has objected strenuously to this plan and no expert has been found to recommend it as anything but a gamble - with people’s lives.
This author does not know what he is talking about.
And although I rarely make a point of it, I am an MD who was a Prof. at a well known medical school for many years.
Reason can do better.
So Trump will adopt China Joe's plan, and when it fails China Joe will blame Trump. Nice symmetry.

I'm reminded of Clue! "Colonel Mustard in the Library with the candlestick!"
The three masked, first-round-vaccinated Dems accuse the unmasked Repubs of giving them Covid! But if the Repubs test negative, what does that say about:
The effectiveness of masks in protecting the wearer?
The effectiveness of the vaccine (at least the first round of it, anyway)?
And the effectiveness of masks in preventing the spread? [Because if the Repubs with no masks didn't have Covid, then the masked Dems must have infected each other!]
Exploding heads in 3...2....1...Boom
Correction: 2of the 3 Dems had received the first-round of the vaccine.
