Self-Victimhood Is a Personality Type, Researchers Find

People who suffer from a "tendency for interpersonal victimhood" present themselves as weak, hurt, and vengeful.

Many social commentators have argued that an emerging "victimhood culture" incentivizes people to see themselves as weak, traumatized, and aggrieved. In higher education, this has been associated with increased demands for specific accommodations like trigger warnings (which don't work) and the policing of microaggressions (which is ill-conceived).

But what if this is not merely a trend but an entire personality type? A new paper in the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences posits a Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood (TIV), an archetype defined by several truly toxic traits: a pathological need for recognition, a difficulty empathizing with others, feelings of moral superiority, and, importantly, a thirst for vengeance.

"The findings…suggest that victimhood is a stable and meaningful personality tendency," write the study's authors, a quartet of scholars associated with Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the University of Pennsylvania.

The researchers solicited several hundred participants for a series of psychological experiments that tested their assumptions. As such, the results should be taken with a grain of salt—social psychology research suffers from notoriously thorny replication issues, since these kinds of experiments are not always great substitutes for the sort of thing being studied. In one of this paper's experiments, for instance, a computer split a pot of money between itself and a human participant; this person was led to believe the computer was also a human participant. Sometimes the pot was split unevenly, and the human participant was given a chance to take vengeance by reducing the computer's pot without enriching his own. Researchers discovered that participants classified as having higher TIV scores were "strongly associated with behavioral revenge" in this scenario.

TIV was also "associated with an increased experience of negative emotions, and entitlement to immoral behavior."

The study distinguishes TIV from narcissism. Narcissistic individuals also experience moral superiority and vengeful desires, but these feelings tend to spring from the belief that their authority, capability, or grandiosity is being undermined. TIV, on the other hand, is associated with low self-esteem. And while narcissists do not want to be victimized, high-TIV individuals lash out when their victimhood is questioned.

"The self-presentation of high-TIV individuals is that of a weak victim, who has been hurt and is therefore in need of protection," write the authors. "Threats to high-TIV individuals are related to anything that can undermine their self-image of moral superiority; or elicit doubts from their environment as to whether the offense occurred, the intensity of the offense, or their exclusivity as victims."

Writing in Scientific American, psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman* notes that "the researchers do not equate experiencing trauma and victimization with possessing the victimhood mindset. They point out that a victimhood mindset can develop without experiencing severe trauma or victimization."

Kaufman continues:

If socialization processes can instill in individuals a victimhood mindset, then surely the very same processes can instill in people a personal growth mindset. What if we all learned at a young age that our traumas don't have to define us? That it's possible to have experienced a trauma and for victimhood to not form the core of our identity? That it's even possible to grow from trauma, to become a better person, to use the experiences we've had in our lives toward working to instill hope and possibility to others who were in a similar situation? What if we all learned that it's possible to have healthy pride for an in-group without having out-group hate? That if you expect kindness from others, it pays to be kind yourself? That no one is entitled to anything, but we all are worthy of being treated as human?

Encouraging people not to be defined by their traumas—real or imagined—seems like solid advice. But when the traumatized person resents challenges to his victimhood status and wants to punish those who want to take it away from him, getting that advice across just might be a challenge.

Just “less” the “well” is superfluous.

        1. WTF is AngloAmerica? I am not saying that they are wrong with their analysis here – I didn’t read it – it just seems like an extremely questionable source.

          1. “extremely questionable source.”

There is no such thing. The info is either accurate or it isn’t, and the source is utterly irrelevant. Stop accepting moronic leftist ideas like “questionable source” as valid.

  4. The perpetual victim class are the most annoying. I work with a few and I mock them by saying.
Ohh poor baby life must be hard for you. I can’t relate because I’m the luckiest person ever growing up every sporting event I was in the other team had their best player sick that day, people just handed me jobs, and teachers felt like giving me good grades. So growing up I had it so easy.

    1. They use it because on some level it has worked for them. Lowered expectations, accommodations, getting a pass. For college students it provides a false sense of empowerment, “you have to do this or you are victimizing me.” In other words, in 21st Century America and Europe, it simply pays to be a victim.

      1. They use it because it’s a means of evading responsibility. All their problems are the fault of someone or something else. If they’re victims, they have no culpability for their own failures (real or percieved). It’s a function of low self esteem and brittle egos- people with low self esteem can’t self-reflect on their own behavior because they see themselves as perpetual failures. They’re not able to separate failure at a specific task from failure as a human being. Victimhood insulates them from having to face personal failure.

        1. But there is a catch 22 the “victims” are failures as human beings

    2. If we were to be just a little logical we’d say that this simply describes immaturity. It’s the mentality of a toddler. These people are tyrants who use their feelings of oppression and inferiority to demand their immediate satisfaction. Expressing their displeasure in grand fashion gives them attention and results. Keep feeding this behaviour and you have a person who will not function in reality

  5. TIV? Hey look, a story about Tony.

  6. Yes, I am aware Twitter exists, thank you.

  7. When I was young we called them cry babies .

    1. Today we call them liberals.

      1. Many of them are Trumpistas… It’s not even fair to call them conservatives any more. What do they want to conserve, besides power for Trump, and themselves, through The Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father Trump?

Anyway, for all you crybabies out there! See below…

I’m soooo sorry that your Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father has been CHEATED out of His Office by evil Demoncrats! I suggest that you might be able to retreat to your safe space… I hear they have laid in a large supply of Teddy Bears. Maybe one of the Teddy Bears will agree to lay with you, and snuggle your wuggle for a while! There, there!

In a mere few more years, as you are still jonesing for Great White Father, I bet you could persuade Alex Jones to be your Next Savior! Slogan: Jonesing for Jones!

        1. “besides power for Trump” — The De-Regulator??? Oh and looky; here we go again with the racist mentality.. Between You and Tony ( the few lefty-wacko’s here ) your racism is undeniable.

          1. You mean the “deregulator” who wanted to defund National Defense (!!!!) as a play-toy ploy, to threaten to UP-regulate AWAY FROM Section 230, where Section 230 is (for ONCE!) a form of deregulation? Does the Great Deregulator propose to answer the below for us?

The day after tomorrow, you get a jury summons. You will be asked to rule in the following case: A poster posted the following to social media: “Government Almighty LOVES US ALL, FAR more than we can EVER know!”

This attracted protests from liberals, who thought that they may have detected hints of sarcasm, which was hurtful, and invalidated the personhoods of a few Sensitive Souls. It ALSO attracted protests from conservatives, who were miffed that this was a PARTIAL truth only (thereby being at least partially a lie), with the REAL, full TRUTH AND ONLY THE TRUTH being, “Government Almighty of Der TrumpfenFuhrer ONLY, LOVES US ALL, FAR more than we can EVER know! Thou shalt have NO Government Almighty without Der TrumpfenFuhrer, for Our TrumpfenFuhrer is a jealous Government Almighty!”

Ministry of Truth, and Ministry of Hurt Baby Feelings, officials were consulted. Now there are charges!

“Government Almighty LOVES US ALL”, true or false?

“Government Almighty LOVES US ALL”, hurtful sarcasm or not?

Will you be utterly delighted to serve on this jury? Keep in mind that OJ Simpson got an 11-month criminal trial! And a 4-month civil trial!

            1. And yet somehow Antitrust (Not Section 230) is being pursued. Your prejudices are showing.

              1. There are literally MILLIONS of independently owned web sites out there! HOW can they be “monopolies”?

I pay for my own web site at Go-Daddy. I say some VERY sarcastic and un-politically-correct, intolerant things about cults like Scientology there (and Government Almighty as well). I am QUITE sure that a LOT of “tolerant” liberal-type folks at Google etc. would NOT be happy with the types of things I wrote! Yet, if you do a search-string “Scienfoology”, Google will take you STRAIGHT to MY web site, top hit! #1!
Your whining and crying is (just about ) UTTERLY without basis!

                1. There are literally MILLIONS of independently owned web sites out there! HOW can they be “monopolies”?
There were literally MILLIONS of independently derived ways to communicate across distance with each other; HOW could AT&T ever be considered a monopoly???

Sometimes Antitrust cases are about shady businesses using shady practices in hoarding resources (by patient and/or copyright) even if alternative methods exist. Point & Case – Google search hoarding 92% of the market and pitching lefty links.

    2. I still call them crybabies.

  8. an emerging “victimhood culture” incentivizes people to see themselves as weak, traumatized, and aggrieved

I think somewhere around 1992 I would have described this as “emerging.” Now I would say “dominant.”

I think when this first really struck me was an incident in the mid-’90s where a guy sent a dick pic to the Women’s Studies Department at SF State. Rather than post the picture on the bulletin board outside the department with mocking comments written on it, which IMHO is what they ought to have done, they sought refuge with the men higher up in the administration and demanded protection from this form of ‘assault.’

That’s when it struck me that it wasn’t ’empowerment’ that these people were really interested in, and I thought at the time that it was pretty silly of these people to call themselves ‘feminists’ the way they were behaving.

    1. “sent a dick pic to the Women’s Studies Department”

      LOL, that’s pretty funny actually.

      1. What if it was a feminine penis? Why did they assume its gender?

        1. Is this like that Descovy commercial that says the AIDS prevention drug is not for ‘people assigned female at birth’ and / or ‘people who suspect they are, or may become, pregnant’?

I thought those were basically the same group, or at least had a lot of overlap, but my Venn Diagram game is perhaps not what it used to be.

    2. I think “victimhood culture” was birthed in the 80’s by helicopter parents and bulldozers moms who would rain unholy hell down on anybody who might dare to expect their spawn was anything less than God’s gift to the world.

  9. Yeah, those poor Trumpistas. Constant victims of fraud, fake news, and other attacks by everyone in the world except Fox News and talk radio. Poor, poor Trumpistas, shitting up every thread because of “a pathological need for recognition, a difficulty empathizing with others, feelings of moral superiority, and, importantly, a thirst for vengeance.”

    That explains a lot.

    1. How fucking long do we have to put up with you making everything about Trump? Until he is dead? Or until you are?

      You have a problem.

      1. Tell that to the crybaby brigade.

        1. No need to, you read it yourself.

          1. Might as well say “I’m rubber and you’re glue.” Amounts to the same thing.

            1. You brought up Trumo tho.

            2. Yes, calling others the crybaby brigade sets you up to pass judgement on others.

              1. Cry a little more about the election. You can do it. Purge the feelings!

                1. You brought up Trump tho.

                  1. I brought up his followers as fitting the description given for perpetual victims. If you take that personally, well that’s not my fault.

                    1. “I brought up ”

                      I know that’s what I said.

                    2. This comment section is all the proof you need that Trump supporters always think of themselves as the victims.

                    3. Fuck off sarcasmic

                    4. “Chipper Morning Wood————————————————————————–

This comment section is all the proof you need that Trump”

There you go bringing him up again.

                    5. Mr. Chipper and Mr. Sarcasmic know that Trump is the demiurge and must be invoked and declaimed in every comment.
                      They are very smart.

    2. shitting up every thread

Pretty amusing he accuses other people of this.

Standards: those things left wingers judge other people by.

      1. Only a simpleminded or dishonest Trumpista who feels that anyone who disagrees with them is a leftist would imply I am such. Get your victimhood under control dude. He lost. Get over it.

        1. a simpleminded or dishonest Trumpista who feels that anyone who disagrees with them is a leftist would imply I am such.

And yet you claim everyone who disagrees with you is a Trumpista.

We see again standards are things leftists judge others by.

          1. Whatever dude. Calling me a leftist is like calling Tony a conservative. But if it makes you happy, by all means continue.

            1. You brought up Trump tho.

              1. Thanks for repeatedly reminding us that all things are about the Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father! AND, indirectly, about Sarcasmic (and his ilk, so let’s ilk it for all it’s worth), who brought up the topic of Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father!

Now could you tell us again… WHO was it, who brought up the Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father?

            2. Whatever dude

It wouldn’t bother you that much and make you constantly shit up threads if it weren’t true

            3. I too seek out a public forum to constantly and continuously complain about people that mean nothing to me!

            4. Yep. Labeling people is a problem, except when you do it. Shitting up the thread is a problem, except when you do it.

Standards: those things idiots apply only to others.

              Happy now?

It is amusing that in thousands of comments he’s never done anything but attack the right or protect the left. But he’s not a leftist!

Some leftists think their defenses of leftism are more effective if they pretend to be something else.

              1. Protect the left?

Is advocating for free trade, even if it is unilateral, protecting the left?

Is being disgusted by how immigrants are treated, regardless of who started it, protecting the left?

Is recognizing Trump’s cult of personality and seeing his followers as not much different than populist leftists protecting the left?

Is refusing to vote because I will not choose between a Giant Douche and a Turd Sandwich protecting the left?

Only if you’re so simpleminded as to see disagreement with Dear Leader as protecting the left would you be able to say that about me without being a dishonest fuck like so many here.

                1. So you know you’re a leftist and it bothers you that we do too even tho you lie about it, got it.

                  1. So you still beat your wife and it bothers you that we do too even tho you lie about it, got it.

                    1. So I was right and it made you even more angry, got it.

                    2. “we do too ”

                      You hit women?

                      I believe that actually.

                    3. Don’t be mean Jewce. Mr. Sarcasmic is very near old and deserves your respect, even when his sugars are off and he hasn’t had his insulin.

                2. Again he whines that people label him even as he wrongly labels others.

Standards: those things idiots apply only to others.

    3. Lol. From Mr Mean Girls hurt my feelings himself.

  10. when the traumatized person resents challenges to his victimhood status and wants to punish those who want to take it away from him, getting that advice across just might be a challenge

Hihn – ‘your 2A infringes on my right to not be shot by some unrelated 3rd party’
jeffy – ‘if you refuse to fight for my liberty for me you are not a libertarian’
multiple – ‘your failure to protect my health is a violation of the NAP’
Tony – ‘you are all racist homophobes’

These arguments have been rebutted, but the promoters never give up on their victimhood. The only thing that would is having to actually fight for food and shelter. Australia seems like a lost cause, lets send them there and cordon it off.

    1. Up-Chuck: I can shit all over everyone who doesn’t worship The Great Whitish-Orangish Pumpkin-Father, and thread-shit all day about How Great a Stable Genius Junior I am, because I am THE PhD Computer Scientist-Genius who has figured out how to move the mouse-cursor, and click on the flag icon!

And then I will whine and cry-baby about it, when people try to tell my that my MAGA-magic underwear will NOT protect me from my assholery! Assholery STILL comes around to those who dish it out, so I guess I will whine and cry victimhood some more! And I am too lazy to even change out the worn-out batteries in my MAGA-magic underwear, because, um, the Marxists always get in my way!

      1. Let me know when you buy a gun. You passive-aggressive threats bore the shit out of me.

  11. TIV has become pandemic among Democrats, Socialists and BLM.

It also appears that those who suffer from TIV also suffer from TDS.

  12. Cluster B. DARVO. Knowing those terms and how to spot red flags can be seriously life-saving.

  13. “And while narcissists do not want to be victimized, high-TIV individuals lash out when their victimhood is questioned.”

On the one hand, you’ve got elitist progressives, and on the other hand, you’ve got social justice warriors.

    1. If there’s one thing this last presidency and election has shown me, it’s that there are more similarities between the right and the left than I ever thought existed.

      1. No there are not. But you are a blind ignorant fool and that we all agree on.

        1. If by “we” you mean simpleminded Trumpistas who feel that anyone who disagrees with them is a stupid leftist with bad motivations, then yeah. I’m sure you all agree on that.

          1. He means conservatives. The ones to whom ‘pussy’ is still a fighting word.

That stupid leftists have bad motivations is self-evident, isn’t it?

            -Russian Revolution
            -Chinese Revolution
            -Cuban Revolution
            -Venezuelan Revolution
Which one of these made their society better? People who defend these regimes are rightfully targeted.

            1. When did I defend those regimes? Ever.

              1. Last night, lovingly with your mouth and other soft parts.

              2. When did I defend those regimes? Ever.

Your lack of reading comprehension is tedious. Look at what I actually wrote instead of what you imagine I wrote. You said the right and left are similar. SBIB pointed out they are not, I clarified for since you. The left defends positions held by those despicable revolutionaries all the time.

                Unless you were just trolling…

          2. “Trumpistas”

Oh god they really did break you.

            1. Let’s see. Cult of personality. Perpetual victimhood with fake news, election fraud and whatnot. Blind faith in Dear Leader. Yeah, the name fits.

              1. And you’re mad at me that you’re broken! Ha!

                “Yeah, the name fits.”

“Sibilance is a literary device where strongly stressed consonants are created deliberately by producing air from vocal tracts through the use of lips and tongue. Such consonants produce hissing sounds.”

Ha you stupid fucker! You cant even use a dictionary!

                1. smells like Tulpa

                  1. Smells like you fucked up and need an out!

                  2. “smells like Tulpa”

He told you no guy, you’re embarrassing yourself with this shit.

                    1. It’s sarcsmic, he is either a violent aggressive drunk or he lied about being one on the internet for sympathy.

Considering he has claimed both, he doesn’t appear to be worried about embarrassment.

                    2. It’s sarcsmic, he is either a violent aggressive drunk or he lied about being one on the internet for sympathy.

That is logically correct assuming that nobody ever changes over time, and that say.. five years down the line… we’re all the exact same people.

I know that can be said for some people. There are many on this forum who apparently peaked in high school and haven’t matured a day since.

                      But that doesn’t describe everyone.

                    3. So you are a drunk and you were lyingvwhwn you said you were lying about it.

You were embarassed that you spammed your fucking emo shit everywhere and lied about it later after it followed you.

                    4. Ok it’s exactly what it looked like, you ARE a drunk but you got embarrased about it so you tried to hide it by lying.

                      How sad for you.

                    5. It all fits now.

He is embarrassed about his past and thinks “he’s not that guy anymore” so he can pretend it never happened.

But he lied about it because it was unpleasant and inconvenient, showing he is still that guy.

                    6. “That is logically correct assuming that nobody ever changes over time, and that say.. five years down the line… we’re all the exact same people.”

Nope, it’s still logically correct even then. Your past doesn’t vanish because time has passed.

                    7. damiskec is here to show us how individual freedom works! It works best when Government Almighty forces people to buy magazines to work, in order to make damiskec’s OTHER authoritarian policies work better!

Free speech (freedom from “Cancel Culture”) comes from Facebook, Twitter, Tik-Tok, and Google, right? THAT is why we need to pass laws to prohibit these DANGEROUS companies (which, ugh!, the BASTARDS, put profits above people!)!!! We must pass new laws to retract “Section 230” and FORCE the evil corporations to provide us all (EXCEPT for my political enemies, of course!) with a “UBIFS”, a Universal Basic Income of Free Speech!

So leftist “false flag” commenters will inundate Reason-dot-com with shitloads of PROTECTED racist comments, and then pissed-off readers and advertisers and buyers (of Reason magazine) will all BOYCOTT Reason! And right-wing idiots like Damikesc will then FORCE people to support Reason, so as to nullify the attempts at boycotts! THAT is your ultimate authoritarian “fix” here!!!

“Now, to “protect” Reason from this meddling here, are we going to REQUIRE readers and advertisers to support Reason, to protect Reason from boycotts?”
Yup. Basically. Sounds rough. (Quote damikesc)

              2. Let’s see. Cult of personality. Perpetual victimhood with fake news, election fraud and whatnot. Blind faith in Dear Leader.

So no different than Obama then.

          3. I haven’t seen sarcasmic this upset since his wife left him.

Trump beating his girl Hillary like a dog still has him upset 4 years later.

      2. There is no legitimate equivalent of elitist progressives or social justice warriors in the Republican party–even if there are some limited similarities. To the extent that some Republican voters claim that they’re treated with contempt by elitist progressives and demonized by social justice warriors, those claims are largely accurate.

Meanwhile, the white, blue collar, middle class of the Midwest, for instance, isn’t trying to forge some group identity among themselves to push for special status within the Republican party or the government. They just happen to be white, blue collar, middle class, and in the Midwest. That isn’t like the social justice warriors in the Democratic party at all. There is no equivalent in the Republican party.

        1. “To the extent that some Republican voters claim that they’re treated with contempt by elitist progressives and demonized by social justice warriors, those claims are largely accurate.”

Fair enough. Where I have to break with the Trumpistas is, they claim being endlessly victimized by illegal sub-humans from un-American nations, mostly because said illegal sub-humans are willing to work harder, for less money, than they are. Ditto, they blame Chinese people for the exact same thing, while the per-capita GNP of China is 1/6th of that of the USA!

Are we supposed to take pity on the rich, because they are victims of the harder-working, poorer people? THAT is what it looks like, with respect to a HUGE percentage of Trumpistas! I am generous enough to allow them to buy ONLY from their fellow rich people, if they will allow me to buy from harder-working poorer people, and quit taxing me extra for my free choices!

  14. Did the researchers use the libertarian party voter registration list as subjects?

BTW, thanks again for electing Demented Gropey Joe. The next four years are on you, even with cameltoe’s hand up Bidet’s puppet arse.

This comment not approved by Silicon Valley brain slugs.

  15. Do we foster this sort of disorder by constantly forcing a certain class of people into dependency?

    1. Yes, this is a huge part of the roots of the problem. Licensing laws come to mind, as well as other endless laws requiring permission to scratch our own assholes! Permission from our better-educated overlords, of course! Make sure to stay safe from the flute police!

Notice that Trump never got around to protecting us from the flute police! He was too busy whining about being the victim of the Demon-rats!

To find precise details on what NOT to do, to avoid the flute police, please see … This has been a pubic service, courtesy of the Church of SQRLS!

    2. We foster it by incentivizing being a victim.

While it’s useful to show the normal crybabies, what I think this points towards more are the Rachel Dolezals of the world. Those who try to hide in the world as something other than what they are, particularly when you try and change yourself in to a “disfavored” class. Whites trying to pass as black. Men trying to pass as women.

These are incentives based decisions. For Dolezal, it was the ability to have legitimacy in the academy and getting and keeping a job. Being white was a handicap for her, and so she decided to follow the incentives. And when she was called out, she doubled down on her victim status. You don’t purposefully change yourself in to a victim if being a victim weren’t incentivized.

Now the “victims” are lining up to see who is higher on the victim scale, because those people are afforded a louder voice. You’re gay, you can speak on this topic, but not until after “This person”, who is also gay, but black as well. The more of victim you can make yourself out to be, the more you will be accepted as a valid person in “some” circles.

  16. Emerging victimhood/grievance culture? Zounds, I know you spend a lot of time on the hair, Robby, but this shit has been ongoing for almost a decade.

    1. Let me rephrase, a predominant cultural aspect of a good portion of the populace for almost a decade. It has, to my surprise, started making serious inroads within the last few years in conservative culture. I am not certain if it’s a matter of competing using the same tools and tactics, or if it’s the effects of shit education on all.

      1. “if it’s a matter of competing using the same tools and tactics”

I can assure you it is. We see how well it’s worked for liberals and so we are copying them.

        1. very mature. tell me why I should vote GOP, again?

          1. “couple times a month”

          2. Because the alternative is a nightmare proven out for a century.

If you like pain please keep voting your conscience.

          3. Because Democrats create things like Detroit and Baltimore.

  17. Tendency for Interpersonal Victimhood (TIV)

Sounds like a serious disease; these people need help.

Get a project started over at the Times, call the legislatures to start reparation talks, and contact big pharma so they can start pumping out the pills. Did I leave anything out?

    1. Disability checks. SSI or SSD or whatever.

  18. Alternate headline: Science discovers Thing Everyone Knew, but proves it with study.

  19. FYI, this can be combined with the narcissistic personality type. Because with our modern focus and lionizing of victims, the perceived victims can take on a kind of ‘authority’ on the subjects of their victimhood.

“Anything you say on this topic is null and void, because I’m the victim of ________”

  20. Those who want to gain from playing victim can only succeed if someone indulges them. If we don’t want a victim culture, we can chose to ignore them. Laughing at them is optional.

  21. The Most Famous White Statues HD images You Want to See

Sculptures depicting people, animals, or objects are called statues. The statues can be made of any material, but the techniques are different. The round-humpback statues depict being fully human, the busts depict human beings from the shoulders up, while the equestrian statues depict riding models; most equestrian statues depict historical figures.

In terms of modern art, the kinetic Sculptures is the branch of Sculptures that belongs to kinetic art. The work of art is perfect when the viewer observes The Sculpture in motion. Like any other means of artistic expression and sculptures, it is constantly evolving. Whether used for decorative, commemorative, or architectural purposes, The Sculptures is one of the most complex arts.

  22. On a related note, Ohio State employs about a hundred zampoliti at a cost of ten million dollars a year.

How many poor kids could get full-ride scholarships for that kind of money?

  23. No. Self-victimhood is just one of the symptoms of altruist indoctrination.
Most people think altruism means helping others but, if that were true, businessmen would be the greatest altruists, as the pursuit of one’s own interest is an ‘invisible hand’ to benefitting others.

Altruism requires sacrifice. Sacrifice is what suicide bombers do better than anyone else. If everyone sacrificed, everyone would be miserable, if not dead. Both conservatives and so-called ‘liberals’ are altruists. The conservatives believe man’s ‘evil’ nature (greed) should be put to work to better man’s welfare.

Altruist indoctrination begins early. Some learn to be victims while others learn that ‘goodness’ goes unrewarded and become sociopaths. Some of the victims do it to themselves which is why it’s referred to as self-victimhood.

  24. It’s just a long diatribe misidentifying which population actually deserves the classification of that ‘personality type’. I don’t know what these people’s obsession is with constantly stating that people whose background they know nothing about are just ‘pretending to be victims’. You’re either a current or previous victim of something serious or you’re not. If you are, it is going to change your reaction to stimuli, whether Korean War Hero John thinks it should or not.

And the point of trigger warnings is to have someone who’s not in the mood to deal with flashbacks just not freaking read it. How does the warning ‘not work’ then?

    1. I once had a needle stuck in my anus to anesthetize the area for surgery. The pain caused a white light to fill my skull. I can remember it. I do not ‘flash back.’

I also did acid for years. The whole flashback thing was a media creation. There were no LSD flashbacks – there were just borderline psychotic people who should never have taken LSD. The claim for flashbacks are largely just a cheap play for sympathy – which is exactly what self-victimizers do.

    2. And the point of trigger warnings is to have someone who’s not in the mood to deal with flashbacks just not freaking read it. How does the warning ‘not work’ then?

TIV in action. The crutch isn’t there to replace your legs permanently, it’s there to supplement your mobility while your legs heal. If, 3 yrs. after breaking your ankle, you’re still walking around on crutches, the crutches aren’t working, even if they are partially supporting the weight of your emotional baggage.

Normal people can read/see things like titles, introductions, conclusions, and reviews which usually contain informative metadata that lets them know whether the material is palatable or not. The insistence on trigger warnings hinders the consumption and processing of this regular stream of metadata.

    3. I don’t think so. Because there are people who have been through the same horrendous (or mildly traumatic, or things in between) circumstances as the professional victims, who while they may be affected, they do not present themselves as victims or make that the center of their personas. Most of the war veterans I’ve known (and many have been WWII — I’m old) do not go around advertising their trauma and certainly do not seem to seek pity. A crusty Vietnam vet I know uses his PSTD to be allowed to tote around an “emotional support dog” but I really can’t blame him for that. Otherwise he is no kind of victim, socially.

  25. Really wouldn’t matter in politics if politicians weren’t lobbying on the socialist nightmare train of STEALING to pay for victim-hood.

What was that one thing about paying more will get more?

  26. To see TIV type individuals in their natural state, read the comments in the Washington Post on any story that even tangentially relates to Trump, Republicans, Christians, Southerners, White people, etc.

  27. Self-victimhood is not a personality type. There is a personality type that is subject to self-victimhood. There are also people who see the power gained through self-victimhood and fake it.

As the old football coach said – I’m gonna keep running the same play until they show they can stop it. When people in authority stop pandering to victimhood claims, victimhood celebrations will dry up.

  28. I think the difference between this and narcissist is what they do with it. When I read the list of traits I thought wow, that describes me. My husband politely agrees that my vengefulness only really shows up in board games, but he doesn’t always know the thoughts on my head.
The point is while I constantly looking for and want recognition, I don’t demand it from others and abhor false recognition that comes from those in charge recognizing everyone. It’s why I despise Thank you notes clearly written only because manners demand it. A narcissist sees that Thank you note as his right because the giving of the gift was about them.
The lack of empathy is also different then the unwillingness to see the other side. I can understand the view point of others because I am willing to learn about them. I can’t feel sad for you. I’m not crying because you lost your father even if I can fully mentally acknowledge that it would suck to have that happen. A narcissist is unwilling to learn about others inorder to mentally accept the thoughts or facts of the other side. They only acknowledge their truth.
The feeling of mental superiority in this situation leads more to quite smugness instead of in your face rightness that narcissist tend to exhibit. But I agree this trait is the one that most overlaps a narcissist.
The feelings of vengefulness are more about taking the other person down instead of putting me on top. A narcissist sees it as squashing others to promote themselves, if you don’t first your last. In my world if I ain’t first the person that kept me from it sure as hell won’t be. Or as often said during Settlers of Catan, I don’t care if I win as long as you don’t either.
I think a lot of the things wrong with society that people in this thread concluded were TIV are really a combo of TIV, narcissism, human nature, and stupidity. The desire to feel and act superior with or without actually doing anything to be superior is honest human nature.
The Netflix show Hell on Wheels had a great interaction between an Irishman and a black man. As the Irishman kept figuratively shiting on the black guy, the black guy asked why. The Irishman basically responded, After years of being shit on its nice to finally have someone to shit on.
Everyone wants to better then somebody else.

    1. Wow thoughtful reply. Most people aren’t that honest!
I see a lot of the victim mentality as a landlady. Especially (and this is going to get me hated on) with single mothers. After being in business for a decade or 2 I’m onto people. When the first thing out of their mouth when coming to rent a place is “I’m a Single Mother” (always in the tone of saying, I’m the Virgin Mary) I know that in the future I will be hearing things like, “I can’t pay the rent because I missed too many hours because Little Jarod was sick and I didn’t have a sitter.” Or because the car broke down and I lost my job. Or my baby daddy didn’t pay his child support. Or the other baby daddy spend all our money on _____.
Of course not only single mothers play this card, but it is an easy score for most of them. Other common grievances are “my disability isn’t coming through” (these people are always “waitin’ on a settlement” upon which they will be filthy rich and of course pay all their bills. They never seem to clue in that after the lawyer gets his cut, there will be maybe enough for a down payment on a nice used 4WD and nothing left over (sorry) for the back rent.
And our society DOES encourage it by pandering to people who feel deserving of handouts. I haven’t stuck my hand out yet but I get some leeway, out of being old, blonde and beat up. It’s not hard to do and a lot of us do it.

  29. Donald Trump is the biggest victim the world has ever known.

    1. …and somehow his supposed “victim-hood” didn’t break-out into lawfully STEALING *more* of other peoples belongings/labor to offset his poor state of “victim-hood”.

As a matter of fact; He insisted you keep more of your things no matter how victimized he was.

  30. “People who suffer from a “tendency for interpersonal victimhood” present themselves as weak, hurt, and vengeful.”

Sounds like a variant of Narcissistic Personality Disorder…

  31. Remember the early 00s when, across the country, gays were being denied access to their loved ones in hospitals?

Not unequal care. Not unequal access to equal care. Unequal access for irrelevant persons. On top of that, there was only one case brought before a court and it failed because the suing parties relied on the lies told to them by a social worker.

Despite all this, somehow, everybody knew somebody who knew somebody who’s partner had a heart attack or a stroke and was denied access to their partner in some vague portion of the hospital or in some tortured set of circumstances that, if viewed through the proper lens, was anti-gay.

    1. ….lol. Victim-hood is an unstoppable plague alright. Spreads like wildfire every-time the Gov-Gods starts picking winners/losers.

  32. Whew! I went through all of the prior comments. I’ll not soon do that again.
I can count on one hand those who made sense.

Good piece, Robby. Liked your book, Panic Attack, too. I enjoyed meeting you after your well-run game afternoon in 2019 at the Donors’ Weekend.

Agree about ENB; though you undoubtedly know her a lot better than I do! My only personal contact with her was at the 2019 Donors’ Weekend. It left a sour taste.
She sat at my wife’s immediate left during the lunch the day the Backpage guys presented. We joined that table. ENB never said a word to my Japanese wife. Not even, Hello. My wife is always cheerful, polite, well-dressed, and well-mannered. ENB seemed a snob. Perhaps it didn’t help that I spent a lot of time talking to the two black guys to my right, and across the table occasionally to the two Backpage guys. I dunno. My wife never spoke of it. I just observed and kept my ears open.

A final general observation: The only two publications I have come to our house, not not directly related to my profession, are Reason and The Economist. I love both publications, though mostly for rather different reasons. The constants are their shared concern for telling the truth and respecting markets. What appalls me in both cases are the incredibly nasty comment threads on both publication’s sites. To my amazement, the most decent comment site I know is an investment site!

Best wishes and continued success. — Lloyd

  33. What would be the difference between TIV and psychopathy?

  34. So everyone is buying into the idea that lefty safe space culture is what this refers to and not people who think the phrase “happy holidays” is an assault on their way of life.

    1. Why would you assume that? Most people I know don’t mind “Happy Holidays.” We just don’t like the idea that, if we say “Merry Christmas,” some wussy might get offended. Rational people are happy with Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Groundhog Day, whatever.

      1. Shhh, Nancy. He might not be done strawin’ that dog.

  35. It’s interesting that two of the study’s authors hail from Israeli (Jewish) institutions.
That is because it could be argued well that Jewry (as a collective entity) displays severe TIV – victimhood is the heart and soul of (self-styledly) Jewish pleading, reaching back over 70 years (and beyond) to an endless series of Holocausts.
Obviously, not all/every Jew and blah, blah, blah (standard disclaimer, sincerely meant).

    1. Israel is the result of Jews rejecting victimhood and fighting back.

    2. From what I understand, this also goes hand in hand with a big guilt thing. I wonder why? I have the guilt thing going on and I’m not even Jewish. Wonder if they have a name for that one and if you can get disability for it?

  36. I watched a documentary a while back about the Golden State Killer– that cop from Sacto that they finally ran to ground. There were numerous appearances of women, and their husbands/boyfriends, that lived through these hideous, traumatizing tortures, rapes, attempted murders. All these events occurred in the 1970s. What really struck me about the women was that they all processed it and went on with their lives. I was amazed by how well-adjusted they appeared to be, and not one of them whined about their victimhood. They were just thankful they survived and that they had kids and grandkids. I realized that could never happen today, that the Victimhood Industry would swoop in today and convince them all that they were irreparably damaged forever. People need to be allowed to forget bad things, but that is not allowed now.

  37. It works for the joooos.

  38. My suggestion for a name for “TIV”: Rigoletto syndrome.
