Mulan

In September, Disney released a live-action version of its 1998 cartoon feature Mulan, based on Chinese folklore about a young woman who pretends to be a boy so that she can fight in her father's place when he's conscripted into the army. It's a tale about cleverness, bravery, and familial love overcoming hardships brought about by a violent and overbearing government.
That makes Disney's choice of a filming location—Xinjiang—even more of a slap in the face. Xinjiang is the region where China has been holding Uighurs in concentration camps and subjecting them and other Muslim minorities to human rights abuses.
As The Guardian reported, "in the final credits Disney offers 'special thanks' to eight government entities in Xinjiang, including the public security bureau in Turpan, a city in eastern Xinjiang where several re-education camps have been documented." The "publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee," the Chinese Communist Party's propaganda department in Xinjiang, is also singled out for gratitude.
The American film industry makes a ton of money from Chinese markets, and Disney was angling for a big audience for Mulan in the country, where it's being shown in theaters. Calls to boycott the company for kowtowing to such violent repression have echoed across the internet. But for better or worse, most people make their entertainment choices without worrying about government or corporate perfidy. While Disney has not revealed how many people have paid to watch Mulan through its streaming service—the only way for Americans to see it—the movie's release coincided with a 68 percent spike in Disney+ subscriptions.

Fuck those commie slavers. Fuck that commie bitch actress (who cares what her commie name is?). She praises police beatdowns of Hongkongers so she can fuck herself.
Not even the commie CCP wanted this movie shown because of the slavery controversy. Do NOT pay to see this movie, you'll be financing slavery and communism. (probably not even worth pirating it since the acting is terrible)
While the choice of filming locations is the worst factor, the movie itself stinks. Someone decided the message of the 20-year-old animated one is hopelessly outdated because it suggests a young woman can improve herself through hard work and winning over those who don’t wish to see her succeed. The new movie “corrects” this idea, with a protagonist who is born perfect and who is naturally gifted and super-powerful in everything she does. (Barf)
Disney storytelling has truly gone down the drain.
Disney presents "Mary Sue in Slave-land".
Yup. The first movie had a sub theme of valuing clever thinking. Mulan doesn't just brute force her way through every problem, she thinks outside the box and outwitts her opponent.
In the new movie, she never once thinks about anything, and this is very likely why the Chinese aren't enamored with it either. Her entire character arc is about how she has to learn that she shouldn't hide her natural perfection.
Someone literally looked at this script and said, "no, she doesn't need to be smart. She is a woman and that is enough, if they just let her be a woman." And then they realized, "Oh wait that won't work because she'll be beaten to a pulp. She has magical Chi too!"
So, Captain Marvel in China?

Yep. I suspect they were maybe trying to make Rey "Mary Sue"
SkywalkerPalpatine more likable by comparison by making Mulan into an even bigger Mary Sue. Instead they just took a giant shit on yet another IP that a lot of people liked. That's a new one for me.
Mary Sue
Origin
1970s: from the name of a character in A Trekkie's Tale (1973), a parody fan fiction story based on the US television series Star Trek .
And it is now what it was then - a device where a fanfic author works themselves into a story where they are the smartest, strongest, bravest, etc.
While viewed as parody, I don't believe A Trekkie's Tale was intended as such.
A Trekkie's Tale was intended to mock the concept. It's barely two pages long, and most of it is dedicated to how wonder Mary Sue, the half-Vulcan teenager who was the youngest graduate from Starfleet Academy, is the best, commands the Enterprise, and is lusted after by everyone before dying tragically. Apparently the self-insert fanfiction was so common that it annoyed the author enough to make the most over the top version she could find.
Of course, since Rey did not need to be trained (while Mary Sue went through the Academy) this means Rey was a bigger Mary Sue than Mary Sue herself.
She chooses service to the state over her own family.
Disney made a propaganda film for the CCP.
More specifically:
Mulan kills Khan, but not before he disarms her and destroys her father's sword. She frees the Emperor, who offers to let her join his personal guard. She declines the offer and returns to her village.
Mulan is reunited with her family. An emissary from the Emperor, under the leadership of Commander Tung, arrives to present Mulan with a new sword, while making a personal request that she join the Emperor's Guard.

Nothing gives purpose and meaning to your life like service to the emperor, I guess?
Make people pay to watch propaganda, how pathetic!
It sucked.
Hey, Liz, now do the NBA.
Tell us about the Sex Work first. This is one time I was hoping there would be Sex Work
After all the CCP ass-kissing, Chinese audiences hate the movie.
"That makes Disney's choice of a filming location—Xinjiang—even more of a slap in the face. Xinjiang is the region where China has been holding Uighurs in concentration camps and subjecting them and other Muslim minorities to human rights abuses.
The CCP wouldn't let them make or show a movie like that for free. Shooting it in Xinjiang and thanking the officials there was the price Disney paid.
The actress who played Mulan supporting the police in Hong Kong against the protesters was probably part of the price, as well.

“For what shall it profit Mulan, if it gains the whole world, but they lose their own soul?"
Disney couldn't give a fuck about anyone unless they can make a social media noise they cannot ignore and then choose to exploit.
Disney's come a long way since Walt designed the emblem for the Flying Tigers. Perhaps they could make a movie about them, but they'd probably need a transgender actor to play Claire Lee Chennault.
Apparently communism needs a perpetual underclass. Who knew?
Southern slaveholders knew. Plantations were effectively just communes.
Honestly, the filming in what is basically an open-air concentration camp doesn't bother me so much as how bad this remake is. If they had made *that* ^ movie it would have been a hit despite where it was filmed.
Instead they made another 'whamen are awesome' movie to 'inspire' little girls by showing them that they're supposed to be superheroes right from the get-go and what is wrong with you because you're not'.
Also, I'm pretty sure no one in the whole movie gave a single fuck beyond 'when do I get to cash my paycheck'.
Donnie yen is in it so I might watch it.
""It's a tale about cleverness, bravery, and familial love overcoming hardships brought about by a violent and overbearing government.""
Will the sequel be called Revenge of the Uighur?
I must admit the film is great as well as this post. Lots of love from my team at https://qualitytechtalk.com/
So I’m supposed to be pissed off about Mulan but ok with TikTok?

I think the $30 price tag and having to opt in to Disney's walled garden is even worse than the fact it blows air-kisses to CPRC. Honestly if I wanted to watch this, I'd pirate it.
Walt was an American Patriot..Disney now run by globalist types...has been for a long time...time to have some middle America CEO's and not anymore NYC leftists..
