Trump Touts Operation Warp Speed's COVID-19 Successes
The president managed to generate controversy, however, with remarks about New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

President Donald Trump stood in the Rose Garden at the White House this afternoon touting the truly amazing progress that Operation Warp Speed has made with respect to developing COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics. Launched officially on May 15, 2020, the Trump administration deserves much credit for the successes of Operation Warp Speed.
Recall that the first case of community transmission of the coronavirus was revealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on February 26. Less than eight months later, Pfizer released initial data from its clinical trial indicating that its novel messenger RNA vaccine was more than 90 percent effective. Vaccine maker Moderna this week disclosed that it had finished accumulating data and expects to release its efficacy results later this month, perhaps as early as next week. "This is five times faster than fastest vaccine development in history," asserted the president. In fact, no vaccines have ever been made and vetted so quickly. Until now, the development of the mumps vaccine in the 1960s held the record at four years.
The president took swipes at Pfizer for claiming that it was not part of Operation Warp Speed. The company backtracked a bit on Monday when a spokeswoman for Pfizer clarified that the company is part of Operation Warp Speed as a supplier of a potential coronavirus vaccine. In addition, Trump called out New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who had indicated that he was so worried about the safety of any vaccines approved while Trump was still in office that he might delay distribution of them in his state. "The vaccine will be available to the general population with the exception of places like New York State," said Trump. "Governor Cuomo will have to let us know when he's ready for it. Otherwise, we can't be delivering it to a state that won't be giving it to its people immediately."
That remark was immediately taken out of context, generating viral tweets and headlines such as "Trump says coronavirus vaccine won't be delivered to New York" and "Trump: New York will get coronavirus vaccine last because of Cuomo's comments."
Trump also noted the role that Operation Warp Speed played in the development and approval of new monoclonal antibody therapeutics by Eli Lilly and Regeneron.
At the White House event, Moncef Slaoui who has been overseeing and directing Operation Warp Speed noted that the six vaccines candidates backed by the program were all in or about to be in Phase 3 clinical trials. Assuming Food and Drug Administration Emergency Use Authorization, Slaoui said, "We plan to have enough vaccine doses available for use in the U.S. population to immunize about 20 million individuals in the month of December and another 25 to 30 million per month on an ongoing basis thereafter."
As the vaccines are rolled out over the coming months, the president urged "all Americans to remain vigilant, especially as the weather grows colder and it becomes more difficult to go outside and to have outside gatherings."

And SIV can finally return to the important things in life and let hope blossom. Remember, as Emily Dickinson said, hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words. Don't take it literally, though.
You might recover from TDS, but, personally, I hope it is fatal in a long and painful progression; exactly what you deserve.
Lol, you're funny.
If Hillary had been president the economy would be in a shambles, the lockdowns would have resulted in more deaths, there would be no vaccine at all, and we would all be under the thumb of big government even more than we are now.
Trump had his issues but he was better than Clinton and way better than Biden.
No question.
All speculation, but fun. Let me try.
If we had President Clinton there would be no tariff on Chinese goods and so no pressure to end the trade war. Also knowing the Chinese leadership from her days as SoS, she would have been better at confronting them on the developing epidemic. President Clinton would not need to please the Chinese to get a trade deal and so could have put pressure on them about what was then then only an epidemic. President Clinton would have reacted faster to the problem and taken steps earlier that resulted in less economic impacts. Using here experience as SoS, President Clinton could work with world leaders to find solution to the problem. Impacts in US and other nations were far less.
Yes speculation is fun.
"...Also knowing the Chinese leadership from her days as SoS, she would have been better at confronting them on the developing epidemic..."
Speculation may be fun, but shoveling lefty bullshit like that stinks, lefty shit.
And funny!
So 10 days after the election it turns out this Trump guy wasn't so bad after all. If only we had known. The Biden Covid team is calling for national lockdowns and mask mandates. Fuck you Ron.
So is Ron. Along with forced vaccinations and an army of half a million
bail bondsmenuh, contact tracers.Forced vaccinations may be what kicks it all off.
Man, remember when that kook Alex Jones got thrown out of polite society for saying forced vaccinations were coming?
Good times.
You know who cared about it less than hookers? Reason.
Well it's a traditional libertarian position, isn't it? That's what I learned from reason.
They also want a literal moratorium on people over 75.
One could hope that includes the president-elect, but then you end up with the Harris administration.
Pfizer and Moderna are set to make some bank next year.
nah...biden will nationalize the vaccine.
Not possible
You aren’t using your imagination.
"Pfizer and Moderna are set to make some bank next year."
I'm not gonna look for the link right now, but the Pfizer CEO sold the announcement day.
That storage temp requirement may be tough to deliver.
Go to hell, Reason. A clinton or biden administration would have utterly screwed vaccine development because their 'actions' would have been entirely focused on funnelling public funds to their cronies in pharma. Much like how obama set back solar panel development by shovelling money to all the wrong people.
Cuomo didn't generate any controversy by saying that he and several other state governors will conspire to prevent their citizens from receiving this vaccine because it was developed under the Trump administration. No. Trump generated controversy by mentioning this.
Cuomo is the epitome of evil, power focus dems. Like clinton with a real ny accent. Or biden without dementia. Or obama with testosterone.
I think Cuomo may be literally retarded.
It's very simple for me. You lockdown, you're a criminal.
Thank you for pointing this out. I was about to make the same comment.
Agreed. The president took Cuomo at his word and set policy accordingly. Any “controversy” rests on Cuomo’s policy that is based on unscientific criteria that is simply petty.
"...Cuomo didn’t generate any controversy by saying that he and several other state governors will conspire to prevent their citizens from receiving this vaccine because it was developed under the Trump administration. No. Trump generated controversy by mentioning this..."
Wife had station which features the actor Wolf Blitzer portraying a newsman; he spent X time tossing BP fast-balls to Cuomo, never asking if Coumo *HAD* done exactly that.
Given the scumbags involved, the assumption is that Cuomo did exactly that.
If Congress and the Executive were in GOP hands, they should have passed a law that everyone in any state that refused vaccines and/or impeded their distribution must quarantine within their boundaries - no human across the border out of the state and no materials coming out that are not disinfected at the border by certified personnel. Interstate commerce clause and all. No reason to let one or more states keep the spread of COVID-19 alive and well in the interest of spiting the President.
Reason's Billionaire Boss: Build that bridge, bitches !!!
<blockquoteCharles Koch Says His Partisanship Was a Mistake At 85, the libertarian tycoon who spent decades funding conservative causes says he wants a final act building bridges across political divides
Fuck You, Kochsuckers
Well. Here's my middle finger to Kock.
That explains things.
Indeed. No wonder this place has been such a complete Democrat cum dumpster fire lately.
"Koch also said he is trying to find common ground with Democrats on immigration"
In other words, everything I've been saying for the past 3 years has been accurate.
#VoteDemocratToHelpCharlesKoch
#ImmigrationAboveAll
These moments are when your work is finest, OBL.
It was one thing when I thought HyR was just posturing to hide Charles Koch's true libertarian opinions. I think this is what my friend John P. meant when he said he saw what they were doing at HyR and didn't blame them.
It's quite another when Charles Koch himself says, or can be reasonably paraphrased as saying, stuff like that. It means the Kochtopus, including Reason, Cato, and other tentacles, is no longer on our side, and that they've probably been concern-trolling us for the past several years. Reason is relatively new to the Kochtopus fold — I mean they didn't get in as early as they did with Cato, though it's been a long time since — so maybe Reason can still get out from under.
WSJ article on Charles Koch is at
https://www.wsj.com/articles/charles-koch-says-his-partisanship-was-a-mistake-11605286893
Unfortunately, the article failed to mention that Koch financed Reason went ALL IN for Biden, demonized Trump's libertarian leaning presidency, and refused to expose or discuss the clear and convincing evidence that the Biden family has cashed in on Joe's VP role and his campaign for presidency.
Seems like Koch has devolved from a libertarian Republican to a left wing socialist, just like the writers and editors at Reason.
I hope the NY Daily News whips out that Ford-era headline again; if so I want a copy.
"Cuomo to New York: Drop Dead"?
“We can’t let this vaccine plan go forward the way Trump is planning it,” Cuomo said. “We need to fix it or stop it before it does damage.”
I can't imagine why you wouldn't make sure Cuomo is first in line to get the vaccine after he's said he has no interest in it. I mean, sure, the fucker would rather let it sit there and rot on the shelves than to allow the federal government to distribute it, but it's not like this vaccine is going to be in short supply and high demand like we can't afford to let tens of thousands of doses go to waste, it's not like somebody else would be glad to take it if Cuomo doesn't want it.
“We can’t let this vaccine plan go forward the way Trump is planning it,” Cuomo said. “We need to fix it or stop it before it does damage.”
Or stop it
Is that clear? Cuomo is quite willing to watch people die rather than that Trump should get credit for the vaccine. How evil can this fucker possibly be, how evil can this fucker tell you right to your face that he is, and yet you put up with his evil fuckery? Frankly, at this point I don't much care what happens to this country, you stupid fuckers deserve what's about to happen to you.
Since he killed people with his political responses, why would it be a surprise he will withhold the vaccine for political reasons?
If NY doesn't recall him, they deserve him and his deadly policies.
Wow, Mr Bailey.
If only I had known that it would take the defeat of Trump for you to back off of your sneering, obsessive condemnation of everything he did. I would have realized that it wasn't worth hoping you'd get your perspective back.
For the past 8 months, you have written article after article complaining about TESTING TESTING TESTING! Two weeks before the election, you were insisting that "Rapid Home COVID-19 Tests Are the Best Path to a New Normal." Not once could you give credit to the administration for the ground-breaking work on Operation Warp Speed.
Indeed, you did write a couple articles about Vaccines. They were (of course) to complain about Trump "cheerleading" or "politicizing" the vaccines. I guess if he had just shut up about them, somehow that would have made it ok to cover them without making it about Trump? Or was it just *that* bad to say something that might help Trump?
Meh. I know you don't respond in the comments any more. Who can blame you- they are toxic. Trumpers made them toxic. But Trump didn't make you so...toxic. You did that of your own free will.
Trumpers made them toxic... by calling out bullshit?
Ron got embarrassed by better informed, more intelligent, more honest commenters - but it's Trumpers fault.
Fuck leftists, and anybody who carries their water.
You'll likely get your wish of a USA without Trump due to ridiculously insecure elections and what appears to be massive fraud, not to mention leftist political violence and destruction of 10s of millions of people's lives (+ the economy) through panic mongering lockdowns and mask mandates.
Now leave us alone, asshole.
Fair enough. I am surprised that the article didn’t bring up that Warp Speed is in contradiction To Libertarian principles, but that it was a good Idea, and that is a positive accomplishment that the Trump administration can and should brag about. The world is complex. When is it OK for the government funding of Big and Necessary projects, like the Military, and in this case Operation Warp Speed? I do often suffer from TDS, and I agree that madness has tainted the article. They don’t even bring up the issue I discussed, which should be their entire point. That TDS can get you.
So Ronald, you now don’t like states taking their own initiative rather than just accepting the word of the federal government? Suddenly now you’re all about how truthful the word of the federal government is? How unlibertarian you are...suddenly. You used to encourage states to take their own initiative. If that was a red state insisting on its own review process on anything Obama suggested, you’d be all about states rights.
Listen...NY isn’t the only state setting up independent review boards for any vaccine endorsed by a Trump administration...you know, the guy who hawked Hydroxychloroquine and bleach? The guy who said we are turning the corner? California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada are as well. Even Tennessee! But to you, Trump is a guy you should just trust outright.
https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/second-opinion-select-states-review-covid-19-vaccines/A3P3YMMRH5FR3MAPE7I33AG6LM/
Cuomo never said he rejected the vaccine, just that he’d have the states own review process to its safety. But you’re OK that Trump would then reject sending it to NY.
But you’re OK that Trump would then reject sending it to NY.
Governor Cuomo will have to let us know when he's ready for it. Otherwise, we can't be delivering it to a state that won't be giving it to its people immediately.

Really? Now?
And Cuomo's a bitch.
So, Ronald, a month or so ago you were all about Sweden and their approach leading to Reason’s myth about herd immunity. You said:
“ But combined, they do at least suggest the possibility that Sweden is more or less inadvertently close to achieving herd immunity—and, even better, that the end of the COVID-19 pandemic for much of the rest of the world may also be nigh.”
Wow. The end of the pandemic was “nigh.” Wow. Let’s forget for a moment at how COVID is raging all over the US, including red states. Let’s look at that herd immunity libertarian stronghold of Sweden.
“Hospitalizations from Covid-19 in Sweden are rising faster than in any other country in Europe, despite state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell predicting his nation would be spared the full impact of a second wave due to his controversial immunity strategy. The number of coronavirus cases is doubling every eight days, higher than in Italy where it is reported to be doubling every ten days... “Four days ago, we had eight times higher cases per capita than Finland and three-and-a-half times more than Norway. They were supposed to have it worse off than us in the autumn because we were going to have immunity...”
https://www.thenationalnews.com/world/europe/sweden-s-surge-in-covid-cases-deals-a-blow-to-herd-immunity-theory-1.1110859
So. How’s that whole herd immunity thing going that you once touted, eh Ronald?
Recent increases in new covid cases in Sweden clearly indicate herd immunity was/has not been attained.
But since July 15, the US covid death rate has increased EIGHT times more than Sweden's (i.e. 309 vs 38 deaths per million).
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-03-01..latest&country=USA~EuropeanUnion~SWE~AUT~CZE~CHE~POL~BEL~FRA~ITA~PRT~ESP~GBR~NLD®ion=World&casesMetric=true&interval=smoothed&perCapita=true&smoothing=7&pickerMetric=new_cases_per_million&pickerSort=desc
Unless/until states and nations that imposed/impose lockdowns (and mask mandates) achieve a lower daily covid death rate than Sweden's, there remains no evidence that lockdowns or mask mandates reduce cumulative covid deaths.
But it is clear that lockdowns destroy businesses, jobs, economies and lives.
Let me ask you something, Bill, since you’ve been touting all things Sweden for weeks. Did you read this? From the website you always cite?
“The death counts for the last 10 days in Sweden should therefore always be interpreted as an incomplete count of the deaths that occurred in this period... This means that for the last 10 days of data, death counts in Sweden must only be interpreted as incomplete measures of mortality... One day after October 29, it looked as if deaths had peaked on October 27 and then started to fall, but in reality that’s not what happened over this period. What actually happened is shown by the blue series: deaths increased steadily.”
https://ourworldindata.org/covid-sweden-death-reporting
Look at the chart.
So comparing country’s on death rate to Sweden is fraught with difficulty. Besides, the US as a country isn’t in lockdown.
Sweden's daily covid death rate remained below 0.33 per million from July 30 through October 22, it increased to 1.32 per million on November 8, and has fallen to 0.83 as of yesterday.
As 10.1 million people live in Sweden, there are now about 7 deaths per day (up from 2 per day from August - October 22)
BTW I use ourworldindata because it is superior
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-03-01..latest&country=USA~SWE~EuropeanUnion®ion=World&deathsMetric=true&interval=smoothed&perCapita=true&smoothing=7&pickerMetric=population&pickerSort=desc
Ignorance is bliss! Have a great evening!
Best,
Jack
I've provided actual data, while you've exhibited and advocated ignorance.
I’ve told you that your own cited website has waned you how inaccurate the data from Sweden is, and they’ve illustrated it for you.
You’re defining ignorance. Willfully.
Wooo, look at that national spike in cases! Guess the masks aren't the almighty virus blockers you guys are claiming them to be.
By the way, like NY, Sweden now stops bars from selling alcohol after 10 PM. And just in from Gothenburg, museums and libraries closing, when a week ago they said they wouldn’t. Hmmmm...start of a lockdown?
“Museums and the city library will be closed and more people will be employed in elderly care in Gothenburg.
Several decisions are made today in Gothenburg to combat the increasing spread of covid-19 in society.”

OK, jackass, I looked at the chart *and* read the report, and also noted your special pleading that the US lockdown is not general:
The conclusion is both obvious and easy to understand:
You.
Are.
STILL and AGAIN.
Full.
Of.
Shit.
There is nothing there which suggests the (primarily D governors' lockdowns) achieved anything like the Sweden's success regardless of count date: As a pathetic piece of lefty, lying shit, you lose again.
Further, your whine that there was no general US lockdown puts you in the even worse position of highlighting the disastrous effects of the limited lockdowns. We all know your ability to reason is, shall we say, limited, but you continue to prove *HOW* limited it is by your continual cherry-picking and self-contradictions.
Fuck off and die. slowly and painfully. But wait, there's MORE:

"Let me ask you something, Bill, since you’ve been touting all things Sweden for weeks. Did you read this? From the website you always cite?..."
I read that and pointed out below how jackass' cherry-picking makes his claims bullshit, but let's get a bit more general:
Jackass constantly pimps 'world-ending' bullshit here, and given that the cites are known and available, and Reason does not allow more than one link, let's cover some of them; you can find them easily:
(1) Ehrlich was certain that India was beyond saving; there was no use trying. This at least 40 years ago. India, in spite of a fucked-up government which I'm sure jackass would love, is now a food exporter.
(2) Mann predicted that there would be boarded-up windows in NYC high-rises from the high winds by I think 2000. Cuomo continues to make an ass of himself with NYC still functioning
(3) The US Wu Flu death toll was to be a couple of million by the autumn of 2002.
Hey, jackass! Don't buy any lotto tickets, you pile of lefty shit.
That's not how it works. If cases increase, we need to double down on lockdowns. If they decrease it proves lockdowns work and we need to keep going.
The daily covid death rate in Sweden is now .83 per million, compared to 3.48 per million in the US.
A dozen European countries have higher rates of new covid cases than Sweden, whose rate of increase is below the EU average:
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-data-explorer?zoomToSelection=true&time=2020-03-01..latest&country=USA~EuropeanUnion~SWE~AUT~CZE~CHE~POL~BEL~FRA~ITA~PRT~ESP~GBR~NLD®ion=World&casesMetric=true&interval=smoothed&perCapita=true&smoothing=7&pickerMetric=new_cases_per_million&pickerSort=desc
And by he way, unless you’re willing to adapt all things Sweden, like their universal health care policy and state protections of the individual, you can’t compare Sweden to the US.
“If we think of lockdown as meaning a pattern of behaviours and practices rather than a legal imposition then the Swedes did lock down. They reduced their travelling, washed their hands, reduced contact with others and worked from home. All sounding rather familiar? They did so because they trusted their officials, trusted the government. There was therefore no need to put the same raft of formal measures in place that we saw in the United Kingdom. Since the authorities were providing guidance then it must be correct. And if self-isolation was required then the high-levels of Swedish social security would be there to support someone through anytime away from work.”
https://www.cost-ofliving.net/sweden-is-no-libertarian-paradise-for-dealing-with-covid/
Let me put it this way. When Sweden suggested individuals work from home, they did so willingly. One important element in that mindset was the fact that their health care coverage was provided by the government. They wouldn’t lose it no matter what their employers did. If the suggestion was to work from home, they did so willingly. Here? Individuals depend on employers health coverage, and will never respond to suggestions from the government.
"And by he way, unless you’re willing to adapt all things Sweden, like their universal health care policy and state protections of the individual, you can’t compare Sweden to the US."
That is wrong. Sweden also has the world's lowest cigarette smoking rate, which, like covid, is not impacted by socialized health care policies.

Scumbag TDS victims will be happy to get "I told you so" for the next four years, assuming Trump does lose.
So, fuck off and die a slow, painful death, lefty shit.
No, many are now claiming they were equally both sides, like sarcasmic. Liars through and through.
I hope you enjoy eating Biden's ass for the next four years bitch. Democrats legalized voter fraud now, do you think your "evil" Republicans would be willing to use the same tactics against you?
I have a feeling vote fraud, while now an open fact, will (still) only be legal for one side.
So "the press" misquoting the President is the President generating controversy?
So I guess this article is Ron generating controversy about the efficacy of all vaccines?
The speed to get to this point is unprecedented. Time will see if the vaccines work. There is no doubt that Biden and the Democrats will try to rewrite history and claim that they cured Covid-19 and that Trump cooked up the virus in his basement.
The reality is that Biden has no plan other than to do what Trump has done. The only difference is that Biden will promote seize more power for the government and forcibly eliminating our freedoms.
I'm glad that Trump appears to have lost and sad Biden appears to have won. I however believe that Trump is due credit with his Operation Warp Speed.
I disagree with the media and Democrats who claim that Trump is the worst President in the history of the world. I feel that Trump has been marginally better than Obama, although more confrontational.
I would like to see Trump end his Presidency by ending our involvement in Afghanistan and other wars. By eliminating entire government departments and programs with executive orders.
There needs to an Operation Warp Speed effort to drastically reduce the size and power of the government. I forgot to mention breaking out his pardon pen and pardoning non-violent prisoners convicted of victimless crimes.
So you want trump to complete all of his policy goals because you agree with them.... but glad he lost. Totally rational.

Libertarian website shouldn't be praising government medical spending.
This is one of those cases wherein neither side can be identified as libertarian. We don't want medical research into something as practical as vaccines to be tax funded, but we also don't want to be identified with those like Cuomo and Biden whose objections are openly spiteful and would prohibit the distribution and/or sale of such products if they could.
It reminds me of the issue of Ikea's wanting to open an outlet in New Rochelle. Some libertarians demonstratively joined the legal fight against it because the project involved eminent domain. However, the community objections to Ikea were primarily not about eminent domain, and when Ikea then picked out another site that didn't require eminent domain, the opposition remained, and unfortunately libertarian activists were among those remembered as having been part of the opposition, which succeeded in keeping Ikea away.
Why no Reason article exposing and ridiculing the economically and culturally disastrous totalitarian proposal by Biden's covid panel to lockdown the entire US for the next 4-6 weeks.
An accurate headline for the article would be

Republican governor of North Dakota just issued a mask mandate, joining Republican governors in Ohio and Utah. Know why? When your hospitals are about to be overrun with a pandemic, you take to restrictions. But he’s real late. Both Dakotas, run by Republicans, have some of the worst COVID numbers anywhere in the world.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/11/14/covid-19-north-south-dakota-masks-kristi-noem/6237635002/
Imagine being so in the tank for the virus that you think the Dakotas are going to overwhelm our medical system.
If they need federal assistance building capacity, we can do that. It will probably go unused like nearly everywhere else, but better safe than sorry.
Fury said in an emailed statement that a third of the state's hospital beds are open and 20% are used by COVID-19 patients. "We have availability in all regions of our state," the statement reads.
OH SHIT EVERYTHING IS GOING TO CATCH FIRE
You know who has even worse numbers? Blue states and their totemic mask mandates.
North Dakota's covid death rate is 95.3 per 100,000, compared to 186.3 in NJ, 174.8 in NY, 149.3 in MA and 132.9 in CT.
