90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?
The TLC show follows six couples whose marriages were the culmination of the K-1 visa process.

Would you accept a marriage proposal from a person you met online or on vacation, then move to another country in order to tie the knot? Probably not. But you might be interested in a TV show about people who did.
TLC's 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? follows six couples whose marriages were the culmination of the K-1 visa process, often called a "fiancé visa," which gives foreign nationals 90 days to marry their visa sponsor upon arriving in the United States.
A spinoff of the original 90 Day Fiancé franchise, Happily Ever After? provides a blunt and honest look at this situation that roughly 30,000 couples deal with each year. Some of the pairings embody Larry David's definition of a good compromise ("no one is happy") while a few others just might be too normal for reality TV.
Regardless of whether you're rooting for Syngin and Tania to stick it out, the show raises questions about whether immigration officials and their artificial deadlines should have anything to do with these kinds of big life decisions.

K-1 is a non-immigration visa intended for imminent marriage. They could marry abroad and apply for a K-3 non-immigrant or CR-1 immigrant visa which don't have the 90 day limits. I know Reason hates borders and immigration controls.
Americans could bask in the knowledge that President Donald Trump was likely on his way out without yet confronting the reality that former Vice President Joe Biden was on his way in. LOL. Government provides an exception for people who are in love and planning to get married. Government gets blamed for having deadlines designed to ensure it's being used by people who are actually intending to get married.
Pretty much this.
No, pretty much faux-libertarians celebrating government regulation.
Oh goody, another libertarian purity test.
This is where you keep denying the whole welfare state crap because it wrecks your argument. Right?
They could remove the deadline by getting rid of K-1 visas requiring fiances to apply for a normal visa and wait in line.
Sorry, but enough of my brain cells died, screaming, already this year.
Why not watch the show and put the surviving brain cells out of their misery?
(Just a little joke)

It's the show that won't die.
First they have "90 Day Fiance", about the immigrants arriving and trying to seal the deal within 90 days.
Then they have "Before the 90 Days", about clueless and loveless American dudes (mostly) going to third world countries to woo their intended. (This is actually the best show of the lot.)
Then they have "Beyond the 90 Days, Happily Ever After?", where you see how it all worked out, usually not well and about as painful as watching a bad marriage.
Then they have some other show (I forget the name) where they sit around and talk about it, show the same clips from the first 2 or 3 shows, and try to hit on each others' fiances.
"Then they have 'Before the 90 Days', about clueless and loveless American dudes (mostly) going to third world countries to woo their intended."
I certainly wouldn't recommend such a course of action, and it takes LURRV out of the equation and makes marriage a mercenary proposition - like it often has been over the centuries.
Some marriages motivated by LURRV work out and some don't - likewise marriages motivated by economic calculation.
we do Married at First Sight instead it's beautifully awful.

Shameful confession - I watch this show with my fiance. If it's real, and it usually feels like it is, it's a great picture of desperate humans trying to use whatever power or status they have to attract the best mate they can. Some of them actually seem like they really love & care about each other, and some of them are very very clearly using each other to get into the US / be able to have sex with someone more attractive than them.
It also shows you the absolute worst, most destructive behaviors in romantic relationships: constant negative talk about each other without hardly any positive affirmation, talking past each other, leaping to conclusions about others internal thoughts and motivations, relationships where the couples disagree on extremely fundamental items like money & children, you name it. If you wanted to teach someone what NOT to do if they want to have a healthy relationship, this show could be a teaching aid.
Just curious, how many American women are hooking with foreign men to achieve the same goals stated above?
If you mean on the show, it's about 60/40 in favor of the male being American. Most of the American women are older, 45 or 50+, and going for MUCH younger guys, like 30s or mid 20s range.
Tania is late 20s, and not horrible looking when she dresses nice, but she's batshit fucking crazy. To her compromise means the guy does whatever she says, when she says it, and she gaslights the guy she's with constantly.
Brittney is another young one, 26 I think and attractive-ish but behaves like a 14 year old. Always has this smug smile like she thinks she's so clever and can get away with anything. Brags about having dated rich old men who take her on private jets. Wants to marry a Jordanian from a conservative muslim family and is shocked, SHOCKED! to find out his family is furious about her wearing clothes showing cleavage and having pics of herself in bikinis on instagram.
I'm surprised the split is that close. I'm wondering if the producers had to look hard to get a split that narrow.
I've thought about it a while and I don't feel it's that surprising. A lot of the women are a combo of very emotionally damaged, very shallow, and some significant unattractive feature like age over 50, heavy, or grating personality. People more knowledgeable about dating stuff than me have told me women's dating market value falls precipitously after 30-35. A kind of dirtbag friend of mine told me stories about tearing through reams of cougars in Vegas, largely because they were going out dolled up and nearly everyone payed them zero attention. Older, uglier, crazier people need love too, but they have to pay! Or take in a foreigner who wants to immigrate.
I believe its been collectively decided by husbands everywhere that 90 Day Fiance is by far the most watchable of the trashy TV shows our wives watch
Gotta have compromise in any relationship. When we first met 95% of music she listened to was mid 90s style pop punk. Now she's developed a taste for classic (Priest, Maiden) and stoner heavy metal. She even has opinions on what is and is not metal! Maybe in 3-5 years she could develop an appreciation for thrash or melodeath.
Maybe in 3-5 years she could develop an appreciation for thrash or melodeath.
You'll be divorced by that time.
I'm OK if she never comes around to loving Vektor the way an enlightened human should.
But seriously, we have a very good relationship. We're closely aligned on values, both very conservative with our finances (no debt, save cash, buy rentals), and we have a very strong appreciation positive talk to negative talk ratio. I feel very, very lucky to have found her.
Look, I'm trying to set up cynical jokes about marriage here, you're not helping.
🙂
So for entertainment value, how does it compare to rubbernecking at road wrecks?

Trudeau's Canada:
That's the way the government can stay out of "big life decisions" in my opinion.
Where do you become a citizen by marriage? In the US you also must be a permanent resident for some time first.
My understanding is it's much... much easier to become a citizen in the US once you're married. Whereas other countries tend to say, "Yeah, that's great that you're married and all, but our process is our process... get in line"
Spouses of US citizens can apply for visas (K-1, K-3, IR-1, CR-1) that don't have an annual limit. They also have a reduced permanent residency requirement before they can apply for citizenship.
My wife watches these shows. As best as I can tell, the formula is to find the stupidest people possible trying to get a K-1 visa and film them. The fame whores rise to the top and get their own spinoffs. I can't take more than a few minutes before I tap out.
HAH, FYI, three of the Lions of Liberty guys (myself included) do a weekly reaction podcast where we go through 90 Day Fiance. Check it out, it's called "Bravo and Beer" - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bravo-beer/id1516736767

You are supposed to make the "big life decision" to marry before you get the K-1. The K-1 is not for dating or for getting engaged, it is simply for getting married. 90 days is more than enough time for that. If you're applying for a K-1 visa without planning a wedding, you are committing immigration fraud.
If you don't like the 90 day deadline or are not certain that there will be a wedding, you should get a visitor visa instead.
