The Rudy Giuliani Scene In the New Borat Movie Isn't What You Think

Trump’s lawyer was caught on camera in a hotel room...tucking in his shirt.

|

By now, you have likely heard about the scene in the intermittently amusing new Borat movie, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, in which Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and the personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, is caught in what The Guardian has described as a "compromising scene" with a young woman posing as a journalist in a hotel room.

Here's how The Guardian, which first reported the scene, described it: "In the film, released on Friday, the former New York mayor and current personal attorney to Donald Trump is seen reaching into his trousers and apparently touching his genitals while reclining on a bed in the presence of the actor playing Borat's daughter, who is posing as a TV journalist."

The scene doesn't exactly look great for Giuliani, but if that's all you've heard, it's probably not what you think.

The bit, which serves as the movie's finale, starts with Giuliani sitting down for an interview in a hotel suite, a fairly common location for videotaped interviews of well-known figures. He thinks he's talking to a foreign journalist. But in fact, he's talking to the actress who plays Borat's 15-year-old daughter (the actress is actually 24) who has disguised herself in order to interview someone close to the president for plot reasons that aren't particularly important.

As the interview begins, she butters him up, describing how thrilled she is to be talking to him. The interview is obsequious in tone, and when COVID-19 comes up, the former mayor makes the striking claim that "China manufactured the virus" and "deliberately spread" it around the world.

As the conversation, which has obviously been heavily edited, proceeds, the pair appear to be flirting with each other, or at least acting quite friendly. But this might be because she's acting somewhat anxious about the interview, and he's trying to reassure her; at one point he tells her, "you're doing very well." At this point, Borat, played by Sasha Baron Cohen but disguised as a sound tech for the interview, comes in to interrupt the proceedings. As she apologizes for the interruption, she puts her hand on his knee.

Eventually, the interview is over. This is where things take a turn: She invites him to "have a drink in the bedroom." Drink in hand, he follows her in. There is some close bodily contact, and it almost looks like he might be unzipping her dress. But if you look closely, you can see that he is removing her microphone. For those who have never worn a lavalier mic for a TV interview, they can be wired up around you in ways that are slightly awkward to put on or take off. Often, news networks have crew members assist with the mic process, which involves close personal contact.

After he removes her mic, he sits on the bed, and you can hear him say "you can give me your phone number and your address." It's meant to sound like a proposition of some sort, but again, it's not that unusual for a journalist (which she wasn't, but which Giuliani believed her to be) to want to give contact information to a high profile source.

She then removes his microphone—again, shot in a way to emphasize the intimacy of their contact—and in the process, the front of his shirt comes untucked. At this point, he leans back, appearing to briefly lie on the bed, and reaches a hand into his pants. But it's fairly clear he's tucking his shirt back in—which is what Giuliani himself says was happening.

Was there something salacious about the interaction? Quite possibly: I can't say what Giuliani was thinking when he followed a younger, flirtatious woman into a hotel suite bedroom with a drink in his hand, but it's not too difficult to imagine what he might have been expecting, or hoping for. And the whole thing is so heavily edited that it's hard to say precisely what went on.

But the pivotal detail from The Guardian story—that he was caught "reaching into his trousers and apparently touching his genitals" looks wildly misleading. Yes, he reached into his trousers, but as heavily edited as the tape is, it's pretty clear that he was tucking in his shirt, not pulling a Toobin

And what if expected that eventually his pants would come off? He's a divorced adult man, and the (fake) journalist he was with gave every sign of being interested in him. Notably, she invited him into the bedroom, not the other way around. Is that "compromising"?

For my money, the more damning bit comes earlier, when he flatly and without any caveats claims that COVID-19 was a Chinese bioweapon created intentionally to wreak havoc on the rest of the world. Some people have speculated that the disease came from a Chinese lab, but the best evidence strongly suggests otherwise, and there's nothing to indicate that it was an intentional Chinese plot to sicken the world. It's worrying that someone who believes in that sort of conspiracy theory is a close personal adviser to the president, and that he would be attempting to spread that theory in what he thought was an on-camera interview.

It's more than a little ironic that the big story to come out of that scene was fake news about a presidential lawyer—when the real story is that a presidential lawyer was trying to spread fake news.

    9. Yes I agree, this is actually about a Conservative joining who he thought was a 15-year-old in a hotel room for drinks.

Who cares if Rudy was dry humping his hand, that’s his business.

      1. No actually at no point does the reporter say she is 15. In fact, she’s dressed up to appear older than her 24 years of age.

  2. In the mean time there is growing evidence that Hunter Biden was parading around naked in front of a 14 year old girl and the media is trying to hush it up. What a bunch of morons.

    1. Even if it was what is claimed, two adults having consensual sex. Yeah that is totally the same as Hunter Biden having a naked video chat with his 14 year old niece.

      1. Ah, but you see …. Guiliani **thought** she was a teenager and, therefore, despite the fact that the woman was actually an adult, he is as much of a child rapist as Hunter Biden who made the all too common mistake of thinking his teenage fixation was actually an adult.

Confusing an adult for a teenager is literally exactly the same as confusing a teenager for an adult.

        1. The teenager was his niece.

          1. Oh yea? It is not illegal to fuck your family members. And, also, Trump once admitted to fantasizing about fucking his daughter.

            So …

            Checkmate.

            1. Shut the fuck up pervert and go suck your wife’s dick.

              1. This guy gets it.

            2. Hahahahahaha. Good one. Trump did say that.

              1. Remind me. How did that quote go exactly.

        2. Is confusion about the age of a total stranger also the same as confusion about the age of a close blood relative?

        3. Except the actress is really 24, and as far as I am aware, she never introduced herself as being 15. She is 15 in the script but was in disguise as someone older.

If Giuliani had been told she was 15, there was zero chance he would have met with her alone. No chance. Too much risk.

        4. Guiliani thought she was an adult TV interviewer. The 24 year old actress was playing Borat’s teenage daughter (in the film) who was pretending to be a TV interviewer. The supposed, portrayed age was not disclosed to Guiliani and for all logical purposes he assumed her to be an adult.

        5. “Ah, but you see …. Guiliani **thought** she was a teenager”

Uh, how do you deduce that? At no point is her age ever brought up in the video we are shown, other than at the end when Borat runs in saying something about she’s 15 and too old. The way she is dressed and with the makeup, she looks about 30 in that scene.

      2. “”Even if it was what is claimed, two adults having consensual sex.””

In the eyes of the law this isn’t necessarily true. How many people have been caught up in a sex sting where the cop on the other end was of age but was pretending not to be?

        1. Call me a Crank, but I’ve never liked those ‘sting’ operations. Too many of the one’s I’ve read about come across as EXTREMELY sketchy. Do I approve of adults having sex with minors? No. But I note that if you are a member of a protected class – like Harvey Milk – you can have a long term sexual relationship with a minor and still be a ‘hero’ to the Establishment Left.

          *spit*

But these operations seem to involve a great deal of effort to CREATE criminals out of idiots who might otherwise have done nothing.

    2. Hunter Biden is not running for President.

      1. But Rudy Giuliani is?

        1. Stop ruining it for poor Chipper. He has a checklist he has to complete.

      2. He’s not. He just a stooge and bag man for his dad’s criminal enterprises.

  3. A lot of people think COVID was a Chinese bioweapon. And there it is entirely possible that it was. We can’t say that it was but it is certainly not out of the question. The fact that Suderman finds Guilliani having this opinion damning just shows what a conformist stooge Suderman is. Suderman not only believes whatever the elite media consensus is no matter how absurd or unreasonable, he also sees himself as an enforcer of that conformity.

I am not sure who is worse, Suderman or his dingbat wife.

    1. I think that’s the problem, John: we don’t know if COVID was a Chinese bioweapon, it’s possible that, maybe, it was a bioweapon…

but Gulliani “flatly and without any caveats claims that COVID-19 was a Chinese bioweapon created intentionally to wreak havoc on the rest of the world.”

That’s not the kind of judgement that needs to be leading the world, and these people sabotage their own credibility.

      1. Guilliani isn’t leading anything. And everyone makes very strong statements of opinion like that in private sometimes. The bottom line is, it is not an unreasonable opinion. And the opinion only matters to the extent of what he thinks should be done about it.

Beyond that, you give Suderman way too much credit here. His problem is not that Guilliani is certain. It is that Guilliani thinks it at all.

        1. I think you’re giving Guilliani too much credit.

        2. The article mentions that the ‘interview’ is heavily edited, so how is anybody sure that Giuliani’s quotes about Covid-19 (or the questions they are in response to) are accurately represented?

Giuliani is a pretty public figure, and in this setting he was speaking to somebody in what he expected was an on-the-record interview. Has Giuliani ever publicly said that he believed Covid-19 was a deliberate Chinese biological attack in any other interview?

The only thing I’m finding after a cursory search is Salon mocking Giuliani for claiming that Obama was responsible for a 2017 grant to a virology lab in Wuhan.

If a close associate of Trump was publicly claiming that China had committed an act of war against the United States, I think the press would be giving that a lot more attention.

      2. Gulliani saying it a weapon is no different than those who claim it isn’t a weapon so Gulliani can say such until proven otherwise but since this is like voter fraud and Hunter Biden’s activities there is no such think when everyone who should investigate is closing their eyes, Nothing to see here, nothing to hear here and nothing to say here

    2. Wait, I thought Suderman was the dingbat wife…

    3. “A lot of people think COVID was a Chinese bioweapon.”

A lot of people were or are birthers.

A lot of people swallow the QAnon line.

A lot of people fell for PizzaGate.

A lot of people chanted “lock her up.”

A lot of people believe evolution is a plot hatched in hell.

A lot of people vote for Trump.

A lot of people, and their opinions, do not deserve respect from competent adults.

      1. “A lot of people believe evolution is a plot hatched in hell.”

Seems like something a demon would say to throw the pious off his master’s scent …

      2. Hands up, don’t shoot.
        Trump’s a Russian spy.
Kavanaugh ran a secret gang rape cartel.
        Covington kids assaulted a vet.
Trump said neo-Nazis were “fine people”
        MAGA madmen lynched Smollet
Trump told Cohen to lie to Congress
Never forget that these lies — and yes, they were outright lies — were deliberately peddled by Kirkland right here at Reason

        1. Nice

        2. The fact that you people are still obsessed with that private school dickhead and Jussie Fucking Smollet is just sad, depressing, and fucked up.

I guess if you deny climate change and Covid, Jussie fucking Smollet seems like a big problem.

          1. Denying climate change is as stupid as thinking it is solely caused by humans.

            1. No one said “solely”. Just “mostly”
Show me a scientific study that says otherwise

              1. If it is “mostly” caused by humans, that means that the Earth is naturally warming on it’s own. It may be warming faster than would be occurring naturally, but at some point, Earth would be just as unlivable if humans never put another molecule of CO2 in the air. I believe the alarmist do in fact mean “solely”.

              2. Mann Bradley and Hughes 1998 stated that there was no warming prior to the industrial revolutions.

          2. “private school dickhead”

Why is he a dickhead? Because the media said so?

            1. Yup. Because Tony doesn’t need a reason. Plus the kid smiled when he was getting yelled at.

            2. In addition it was a Catholic school, not some ritzy private school.

        3. Nobody said Trump was a Russian spy… they did wonder why he was so chummy with Putin and speculated he might be getting assistance from the Russians.
A couple of (admittedly unconvincing) rape allegations is hardly a cartel.
I think pretty much everyone accepted the truth about the Covington kid when the full story came out a couple of days later – unless you know otherwise? You are conflating quickly-corrected shoddy reporting with conspiracy theories and prolonged campaigns of lies.. Same goes for the Smollett story, is there anyone still defending him?
Cohen lied on Trump’s behalf for years… are you really so gullible you don’t think that him lying to Congress was at Trump’s direction?

      3. People that believe in conspiracy theories tend to believe in all the conspiracy theories. It’s a defense mechanism for not having control over their own lives.

        1. This isn’t a confessional, eunuch.
Plus, the solution to your problem lies in you.

        2. Case in Point:

My neighbor who believes all the things Mother’s Lament listed above, also believes in alien abductions and Bigfoot.

          1. Probably chakras, healing crystals and yogic flying too.

        3. What are you talking about? How do you know anything like that.

      4. A lot of people who say Trump is racist will vote for the guy that helped keep systemic racism alive at the federal level.

  4. More anti Trump propaganda posing as journalism by Reason.

  5. Looks like Reason has become yet another Fake News site.

  6. Suderman…why did you leave out the part where Guilliani actually called the police to report the incident when it happened?

That says a lot about your journalistic ethics

    1. Suderman also left out that when Giuliani asks for her contact information, he isn’t saying it in the bedroom. It’s just audio that they edited in, but there’s no footage of their mouths moving. Probably this audio happened in the main hotel room with the camera and she somehow led him into asking for it for more information or something.

A lot of people are naïve about what can be accomplished with fraudulent editing, sound and especially creepy music. You can make heroic scenes in movies appear horrendous just by changing the music score. Leftists have been manipulating the normies for decades this way.

  7. Are reporters not vetted prior to interviews?

  8. More to the point Borat and Cohen are extremely boring now.

In 2004 when nobody knew who he was it seemed sort of funny to trick famous people. It wasn’t original in the slightest though.

“If this is anyone except Steve Allen, you’re stealing my bit”

    1. What famous people were tricked in the original Borat?

    2. Borat’s an idiot. Tricking people into saying silly things is cheap humor. Akin the funny telephone calls of middle school.

  9. The funny thing to me is that Guilliani is even trying to deny this. Anyone that would think less of him for trying to bang a young woman probably jumped ship at “grab them by the pussy”. Of the people that still think he’s worth listening to, most would probably give him a high five if he’d scored with her.

Which is to say… I don’t know or care what actually happened. I think it’s hilarious that Guilliani and Suderman think anyone else does either.

  10. “For my money, the more damning bit comes earlier, when he flatly and without any caveats claims that COVID-19 was a Chinese bioweapon created intentionally to wreak havoc on the rest of the world. Some people have speculated that the disease came from a Chinese lab, but the best evidence strongly suggests otherwise, and there’s nothing to indicate that it was an intentional Chinese plot to sicken the world.”

There is a fundamental difference between “manufacturing” a virus, and discovering a naturally occurring virus and releasing it upon the public, whether deliberately or inadvertently.

The AP “Fact Check” disputes that the virus was manufactured. To my knowledge, Guiliani never claimed the virus was manufactured, only that it may have been released from a Chinese lab.

In other words, a complete strawman.

    1. It’s Mickey Mouse’s fault.

      1. Pooh Bear’s, actually.

  11. Please – haven’t we seen enough of these “highly edited” videos and audio files to know that you can’t assume that anything they portray can is true? We have plenty of instances where these edited files are run with or treated as if they are “real” without our media class even bothering to check them out, starting with the video of the Ag Dept bureaucrat under Obama, the NPR Muslim brotherhood audio, to the Covington kids video. I’ve seen and heard enough to know that the more salacious the video or audio, the more likely the clips have been edited to make the victim of their work seem to say the exact opposite of what they actually state. Let’s quit being so naïve about this crap. Cohen is trying to get an audience, and I don’t think ANYTHING in this clip can be taken as representing anything Giuliani actually said.

    1. Yup just like the dumpster in chief uses edited content every chance he gets.

  12. Listened to someone talking about this last night over poker. As soon as he said ‘Borat’ I know everything I needed to know about the story and about him.

    1. It wasn’t a good first impression.

  13. Bwhahahahaha! “Tucking in his shirt!” Hahahahahahaha

    1. yea more like pumping up his inflater

  14. For my money, the more damning bit comes earlier, when he flatly and without any caveats claims that COVID-19 was a Chinese bioweapon created intentionally to wreak havoc on the rest of the world. Some people have speculated that the disease came from a Chinese lab, but the best evidence strongly suggests otherwise

An AP article that misrepresents Scripps Research study as definitive is Suderman’s “best evidence”?
Here’s the Scripps Study if anyone is interested:
    https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9

I’m starting to understand why Reason hasn’t run any real articles on the Uighur slave camps.

    1. I have noticed op ed articles, which is what most of them are these days, where the author doesn’t seem to understand the definition of the word may.

  15. As if believing the virus did not originate from people eating bats is a looney position to take. Fuck Reason.

  16. She represented that she was 15. Only an idiot male would go to the room of a minor for a drink and private conversation. At the very best, this is unacceptably reckless and unprofessional for someone in Guliani’s position. No sane employer would allow this kind of behavior.

    1. I will not be watching the movie, but is it clear that she’s representing herself as 15?

But in fact, he’s talking to the actress who plays Borat’s 15-year-old daughter (the actress is actually 24) who has disguised herself in order to interview someone close to the president for plot reasons that aren’t particularly important.

Is that the character disguising herself as a journalist in that scene? Perhaps a journalist that might feasibly be close to her actual age of 24?

I don’t know. And given how SBC’s gags are almost entirely reliant on misleading editing these days, I don’t have any real interest in learning more.

    2. You’re putting too much faith in Cohen’s version of the same narrative.
It’d be good to see unedited footage.

    3. “She represented that she was 15.”

Uh, that is completely wrong. What dos “represented” even mean? At no point did she say she was 15. She was dressed to look 30 with that outfit and makeup, even though she is 24.

  17. “… when COVID-19 comes up, the former mayor makes the striking claim that “China manufactured the virus” and “deliberately spread” it around the world.”

While I don’t believe that COVID-19 was manufactured, I don’t know that it wasn’t. I do believe its existence was suppressed by China for many months before the cat got out of the bag. However, what is shocking is calling the belief that it was manufactured shocking. Many reputable scientists believe it was edited. I don’t have the knowledge, experience nor equipment to find out for myself but I what I do know is being manufactured is a narrative where that is beyond my possibility. The more the MSM denies it, the more true it is likely to be. The more Google, Facebook and Twitter censor it, the more as well.

    1. “While I don’t believe that COVID-19 was manufactured, I don’t know that it wasn’t.” So, it’s a claim without evidence.

  18. Until I can see the film I have no opinion. But I am skeptical because Cohen gets to edit the heck out of it. Alas, Cohen is looking like the O’Keefe of the left. No one is innocent anymore.

  19. Until I can see the film I have no opinion. But I am skeptical because Cohen gets to edit the heck out of it. Alas, Cohen is looking like the O’Keefe of the left. No one is innocent anymore.

    1. “the O’Keefe of the left.”

      You think Borat is documentary???

      Ok, sure.

      1. I mean, O’Keefe doesn’t make documentaries either, but he does pretend to.

        1. So we can expect Borat to release all the tape from his film any day now, just like O’Keefe has done for every single expose he’s conducted?

          1. Near peak irony when EE talks about pretending in the comment section of a libertarian website.

  20. Over 60 comments and no one has made any jokes about what, at least in my opinion, should become a regular euphemism?

Really? No one picks up on “pulling a Toobin”?

    Smdh

Or… to be fair… is this already been sorted in another place on the interwebs? Being a bit of an inadvertent luddite re: social media I can admit that I may have missed the moment as it occurred elsewhere.

    1. You can pick your friends, and you can pick you nose, but you can’t…

Anyone can pull a Toobin, just not the Toobin.

  21. I think we should focus on how much Giuliani resembles a Xenomorph.

  22. Peter, you look a little desperate here. You stipulate (and everyone can see) that Giuliani was flirting with someone that he believed was a journalist there to interview him. Likewise, we can all see that he accompanied the young woman to her bedroom with a drink in his hand, and they both started helping each other out of their cumbersome interview gear.

At that point, it’s pretty obvious where this was going. Does it really matter why Giuliani stuck his hand in his pants? Anyone that tries to claim that Giuliani’s motives were pure is being dishonest — with themselves most of all.

For my money, both the mainstream media and you have missed the most vital aspect of all of this. The salacious details are entertaining, and despite Giuliani’s desperate attempts to spin this I believe his girlfriend (yes, he has one) is going to want a few words with him. But the most important element is that Giuliani’s stupidity could have endangered national security.

Think about it. Giuliani is a close adviser and personal troubleshooter for the President of the United States. He has access to extremely sensitive information. So a person claiming to be a reporter calls him to her hotel room for an interview. After the interview, she suggests that he join her in the bedroom for a drink. Sex is obviously on the table (or the bed, or the floor).

Shouldn’t some alarm bells start ringing in Giuliani’s head at some point in that process? Even the most basic security training says that you are VERY wary of anything sexual that seems at all unusual. That’s one of the most common ways of setting up blackmail, especially for someone like Giuliani, who has a girlfriend.

In someone else’s hotel room, no less. It had “Honey Trap” written on it in flashing neon.

But even beyond that basic red flag, did he do any sort of due diligence? Did he check out the news agency she claimed to represent? Check the site for her byline? Did he get her editor’s name and call to check?

Just basic stuff that anyone with a security clearance ought to think of. But no, if he had done any of that then he wouldn’t have shown up at her hotel room in the first place. If this young woman had been an asset for Russia, China, North Korea, or Iraq then Giuliani would have been hosed way worse than just being embarrassed by Sacha Cohen.

This was so many kinds of stupid that I can’t even count them. I certainly wouldn’t want this man to have a security clearance.

    1. they both started helping each other out of their cumbersome interview gear.
Oooh yeah, no other reason to get out of cumbersome interview gear except sexytime. For what possible other reason would you not want to stay in your cumbersome interview gear.

At that point, it’s pretty obvious where this was going. Does it really matter why Giuliani stuck his hand in his pants?
He says he was tucking in his shirt. My dad has an old man gut, like Giuliani, which pulls his shirttails out when he moves and he’s forever tucking them in… or so I thought!
Now I know dad was having a quick tug! Thanks Cohen and Peter T!

Anyone that tries to claim that Giuliani’s motives were pure is being dishonest — with themselves most of all.
Yup,, because deceptive editing is totally not a thing! Bow Chicka Wow Wow, Wa Wa.

      1. >>Oooh yeah, no other reason to get out of cumbersome interview gear except sexytime. For what possible other reason would you not want to stay in your cumbersome interview gear.

As usual when people try to defend Trump and his enablers, you’re pretending that there is no context. If the two of them just wanted to have a little drink together, then they had perfectly good chairs that they were already sitting in. They could have removed their mics there.

Going into a young woman’s bedroom with a drink is seldom a prelude to a platonic evening. And no amount of “deceptive editing” could make it look like he did that if he didn’t.

That shapes the interpretation of everything else that happened, which is why you have to ignore it.

        1. you’re pretending that there is no context.

You’re pretending that you can discern context from a deliberate hit piece. There could have been five other people in the room.

      2. Bear in mind that the entire point of this exercise was to put Giuliani in a compromising position. That’s why the young actress was flirting with him.

If you need to pretend that after all that, Giuliani accepted her offer to join her in her bedroom just so they could keep chatting then yes, you’re being dishonest with yourself.

        1. If you need to pretend that after all that, Giuliani accepted her offer to join her in her bedroom just so they could keep chatting then yes, you’re being dishonest with yourself.

Who knows whether he would or would not have gone through with having sex even if she had been willing.

I still fail to see where the problem is. Giuliani is not married, and she is an adult.

    2. Oh, please, stop hyperventilating. Giuliani is a single man; if he wants to sleep around with willing adults, that’s his business.

You can barely blackmail people over marital infidelity; the idea that you can blackmail someone based over this is laughable.

And, I would point out, Giuliani did go to the police.

      1. I made 10k dollar a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless. Here’s what I’ve been doing Please visit this site…READ MORE.

    3. I don’t think you understand what can be accomplished by editing together audio and video. You’ll notice you can’t see their mouths moving for almost any of the dialog after the interview. And what was left out? She probably said they had to go in there to remove the mics. (cut that clip out) That she needed help removing her mic. (cut that out) Perhaps suggesting Rudy sit on the bed. (cut that out) Plus she was super flirty with him the whole time, so I give Rudy credit for maintaining his professionalism. We are men after all.

  23. Evidence strongly suggests? What in the world are you talking about? Say that Giuliani’s theory has not been proven, but at this point, we have very little information about this virus despite claims that we do. Masks, no masks, how it spreads, its origins. NO ONE KNOWS AT THIS POINT. His theory is as plausible as it went from a bat to a human or an intermediary. Too many people speak as an authority when they truly have no clue. For all we know it came from something we havent even thought of yet.

  24. Whew – I’m so glad that this article clarifies that Giuliani isn’t a political leech and a scum-sucking sycophant. “Drain the swamp,” indeed.

  25. “Some people have speculated that the disease came from a Chinese lab, but the best evidence strongly suggests otherwise”

The best evidence suggest the virus was not manufactured in a lab but it doesn’t in any way suggest that it didn’t COME from a lab that was investigating the bat virus. In fact, the best evidence suggests it was accidentally (or purposely?) released from a lab. The bats that harbor the virus are located hundreds of miles away from the “wet market” that was suggested as ground zero for the outbreak, but a virus research institute that studied bat viruses is located just a couple blocks away from the wet market.

  26. Try to spin it all you want Reason if you’ve seen the footage it’s pretty obvious what was going on. Plus you can’t exactly give Giuliani the reason of the doubt at this point.

    1. Yeah, it’s pretty obvious he was tucking in his shirt.

But even if he did want to have sex with her, where is the problem? A 24 year old journalist invited him to her suite and then to her bedroom and he went along. What exactly do you think is wrong with that?

  27. I would believe anything Borat says over Trump at this point.

  28. Hey, Peter Suderman and Reason, your “best evidence strongly suggests[ing]…” against Chinese lab origins of Covid is (drums, please) … (more drums) “….The study, which has not been peer-reviewed, was released Monday by Chinese virologist…. “
This is embarrassing. You have to find a new name for your publication.

  29. It’s worrying that someone who believes in that sort of conspiracy theory is a close personal adviser to the president, and that he would be attempting to spread that theory in what he thought was an on-camera interview.

Engineering COVID-19 from scratch is beyond China’s capabilities, but looking for a deadly virus in bats doesn’t require much scientific expertise.

There is plenty of evidence that China is a hostile, communist nation bent on harming the US by any means available to them, from election interference to misinformation, intellectual property theft, and economic warfare.

Now, there is no evidence either for or against China deliberately releasing COVID-19, or even if the initial release was accidental, taking advantage of the situation and deliberately making the situation worse in Western countries. It is also crystal clear that China has been manipulating the Western media and Western public opinion so that responses to COVID-19 do harm to Western interests.

If you put all these facts together, yes, I very much hope that the US government treat China as probably guilty and as a dangerous, hostile nation.

    1. “Engineering COVID-19 from scratch is beyond China’s capabilities”

Not accurate. Early on, there were experts theorizing exactly how the virus could have been made, by infecting a carrier species (i think it was ferrets) with the base strains and then continuing to generationally ‘evolve’ it in the direction they wanted, much like people have been doing for centuries with selective breeding.

Well within their capabilities, and the early analysis pointed to genetic traits that would suggest this approach.

Of course, these early reports have all been scrubbed and further discussion disappeared from the public domain.

      1. What I said is entirely accurate: “Engineering COVID-19 from scratch is beyond China’s capabilities”. And I go on to point out that China could nevertheless have used COVID-19 to attack the US.

See, the problem is that misuse of terminology by people like you allow defenders of China to dismiss any concerns about China as “conspiracy theories”.

        Get your terminology straight.

  30. Some people have speculated that the disease came from a Chinese lab, but the best evidence strongly suggests otherwise

It is unlikely that the virus was designed artificially at a Chinese lab, but it is nearly certain that it came from a Chinese lab. The only question is whether it was released accidentally or deliberately.

and there’s nothing to indicate that it was an intentional Chinese plot to sicken the world.

China didn’t create the virus de novo and then deliberately spread it; they lack the capability.

It is almost certain, however, that China took advantage of the situtation through manipulating Western fears to their advantage. And they tolerated international spread of the virus, for the simple reason that they had no motivation to stop it. That doesn’t take a bioweapons program, it simply requires not stopping potentially infected people from traveling abroad.

  34. “there’s nothing to indicate that it was an intentional Chinese plot to sicken the world.”

Bullshit and lies. The Chinese knew, without a doubt, that this had the potential to be extremely bad. In January there was cell phone video circulating of the PLA, armed and armored, putting dirt berms across roads out of Wuhan….videos which were promptly ‘disappeared’. They knew and were taking domestic action to stem something they were very afraid of. But yet, weeks later they were allowing international flights to leave Wuhan. They continued to claim no signs of human-to-human transmission….after physically quarantining internally.
They were lying to the world, and taking actions that directly suggest an intentional desire to spread it to the world.

    1. It may be unlikely that they created the virus, and intentionally released it.

but it seems quite likely that they created the virus, lost control of it, and then through either gross incompetence, or intent, encouraged it to spread to their largest economic rivals.

    2. Oh they definitely lied about it. Did they engineer a new virus? Probably not, this virus has been shown over and over to probably happen the same way as SARs and other China Flus, probably from them eating everything that moves or that doesn’t move in open air bloody disease propagating markets.

  35. Something else worth mentioning about the way the video was edited. When Giuliani tucks in his shirt, the video shows him doing that from a couple different angles in succession, to make it appear as if he has his hands down his trousers a lot longer than he actually does.

    1. What, you mean a leftist has taken things out of context and distorted the truth to try to make a point? Boy, color me surprised.

  36. I will not lie, I liked the first Borat when it first came out, and I guess some Aly G interviews are funny, but at this point, this type of “gotcha” jornalism just seems dishonest.

  37. I watched the scene, he could have been straightening up his shirt going for his pecker, it was literally 4 or 5 seconds and we’ll never know because “Borat” busted in before our G could either say “well thanks for the interview” or “so now bebe, what’s next” . There’s nothing in the scene other than we’ll never know what happens next because Borat has terrible timing.
