You Don't Have to Vote for Your Party's Crappy Ticket
At least 100 million Americans live in states where the presidential winner is a foregone conclusion. Maybe don't reward your party for nominating candidates you don't like?

You don't have to strain your imagination to come up with reasons why some (though definitely not most!) Democrats might be less than enthused by vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D–Calif.) or by ol' whatshisface at the top of the ticket. In a year where criminal justice reform is at or near the front of many progressive agendas, the Dems are pairing California's self-styled former "top cop" with a guy who once bragged that "every major crime bill since 1976 that's come out of this Congress, every minor crime bill, has had the name of the Democratic senator from the State of Delaware: Joe Biden."
And yet, like so many Republican voters who claim to be appalled by the behavior of President Donald Trump, these Democrats will, if they vote, overwhelmingly hold their noses and support a home team that has yet again put forth a less-than-ideal ticket. This despite the fact that so many voters live in states where the 2020 outcome is a foregone conclusion.
How dare anyone make such a confident claim after the projections-shattering debacle of 2016? Here's how:
In each of the past seven presidential elections, Democratic nominees have won by double-digit margins in California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Vermont, the District of Columbia, and Rhode Island. The closest Donald Trump came in any of them last time around was within 16 percentage points in Rhode Island. If you change the margin-of-victory parameters from 10 percentage points to eight, you can also include Hawaii (which was +32 for Hillary Clinton in 2016) and Biden's home state of Delaware (+11).
That's a combined 90 million people, 142 electoral college votes, and zero chance of Trump winning, barring belated arrival of the Sweet Meteor O'Death.
Some Democratic residents of these states (and also some non-Democrats who despise Trump and Trumpism) will want to run up the score against the incumbent. But for the subset who don't, and are disgruntled about their own side's offering, yet anxious about even the remote possibility of losing, I'm here to tell you that FiveThirtyEight's projection model puts Trump's chances of winning in each of these states at less than 1 percent.
What about red states in tough Republican year? FiveThirtyEight gives Biden the less-than-1-percent-chance treatment in four: Oklahoma, West Virginia, Idaho, and Wyoming. Trump won each of these states by at least 32 percentage points in 2016. That's another eight million people and 19 electoral votes off the table.
Other states that hold the distinction of A) voting Republican in every presidential election since Reason was founded 52 years ago, B) going GOP by at least nine percentage points every contest this century, and C) preferring Trump last time by 15+ percentage points, include: Utah, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Alaska. The Klondike State is notoriously unpredictable and is showing some support for Biden, but FiveThirtyEight gives the other five a chance of between just 2 percent and 8 percent of going rogue. That's another 10 million people and 25 electoral votes.
Why point out that so much of the electoral map remains stubbornly non-competitive? Partly, it is true, to stick up for that much-reviled cohort I happen belong to: self-described independents, who remain the largest bloc on the political spectrum. And yes, I prefer more political competition to the two major parties, because they don't come close to representing my political views, and also I am a bit weird.
But the main motivation here is to encourage my depressed partisan friends to use political literacy and what tiny leverage they have to produce more gratifying results.
Behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated. If you reward your party for nominating people you don't like, chances are very likely that will happen again, sooner rather than later. There is a contradiction in complaining that two-party choices seem to get worse every four years while still voting reliably for one of those choices.
So: Dissatisfied Bernie-bro environmentalist types in California and New York—kick the tires on Green Party nominee Howie "I invented the Green New Deal" Hawkins! Utah Mormons sickened by Trump's boorishness: Libertarian Jo Jorgensen is a nice lady!
Just because you despise a major-party presidential nominee—trust me, I know the feeling—that doesn't mean your choice is limited to supporting his or her major-party opponent. Using your vote strategically in states where the outcome is certain gives you at least the remote possibility of positively influencing your own team's future behavior.
And who knows—if you stop despising your own nominees, maybe one day I will too.

Jo Jorganson has endorsed Antifa and it's violence. Sorry but anyone who claims that the guy in Austin who blocked traffic and stuck a gun in someone's car window is some kind of hero, is most certainly not a "nice lady".
If you want to vote third party, vote for Kayne West. He seems to have a reasonable platform and actually seems to care about the country.
To be honest yes, Kayne appears to be a great protest vote this year.
Plus, first lady will have an awesome Insta page.

Fun fact, if Kanye wins, it will be only the second time in history the world has seen the First Lady naked.

Jo Jorganson has endorsed Antifa and it’s violence.
When did she do that? If it was that stupid BLM tweet, well all I can say to that is:
She was trolling
What matters is what she does not what she tweets
You have JDS!
Her calling the guy in Austin a hero. She meant it. The LP is pro Antifa. Reason is as well
That is some Rachel Maddow level analysis. If that is the case then Trump is a Nazi for his Charlottesville quote.
Except Jo directly promoted marxist ideology
"It's not enough to be passively not racist, we must be actively anti racist"
No, being actively against racism is not "Marxist". Marxism is primarily about economics, and libertarians are as far away from Marxism as you can get. Hitler was a vegetarian, does that make vegetarians in general pro-Nazi?
Thanks for your input, useful idiot, but you're flat out wrong.
Marxism is about identifying people as units of identify classes that are engaged in perpetual class struggle between "oppressor" and "oppressed".
Anti racism is against racism in the same sense that antifa is against fascism.
Any perspective that prioritizes race is racist.
Prepare for a mind blow. Libertarianism, meaning the things you believe and the theories posited by its early philosophers, IS MARXIST.
It’s the funhouse version. The exact same class struggle exists, except that you think the capital class is being oppressed by the worker class. Reverse Marxism has been the framework of American rightwing economic politics the whole time. Marx is who distinguished between these classes in the first place.
And don’t say that’s a tricky esoteric reading. Every single policy you advance is about servicing capital at the expense of labor. It’s your whole point. Stop calling other people Marxist as if it’s a pejorative. You are a Marxist.
actually, it's about allowing freedom at the expense of state control. which is the exact opposite of Marxism.

Holy *insert deity here* John!!, I've been gone for years and you're still pedaling the same old crap. Congrats on holding fast to the crazy!
John is once again spreading outright lies. Jo Jorgensen has never endorsed violence. You are a liar, John.
She did too. She called the guy in Austin a hero. How is that not endorsing violence? Reason had a whole article on it. You posted on the thread. So why don’t you stop lying. You dishonest lying fuck.
She did not endorse Antifa.
Look if you want to vote Trump again go ahead. Nobody is stopping you.
I’m surprised she hasn’t been hired here already!
The sun has risen and John has shit all over the comment section on every Reason.com article with blatant lies. All is right in the world.
Sorry to bring it up but Kanye has bipolar disorder and has admitted as such. I have nothing against people with mental illness. My best friend from childhood is a gifted artist and bipolar. I know how it can get.
He has said about his manic episodes “When you're in this state, you're hyper-paranoid about everything.... Everything's a conspiracy. You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you're being recorded. You feel all these things."
I do applaud his ability to live a life and cope with things. Calling him a viable candidate for president. No.
No, I've seen no endorsement of Antifa, quite the contrary if you read the article she wrote in Reason. She supports the protests and takes libertarian positions on "the drug war, no-knock raids, and qualified immunity" in support of the protests (not Antifa, BLM, or that "guy in Austin who blocked traffic and stuck a gun in someone's car window."
You're using a common, unethical, Democrat tactic: make up lies about the competition, anonymously.
Reason wants libertarians to vote for the Identitarian Libertarian instead.

Voting at all is pretty ridiculous.
My man
Ding ding ding!
Counting votes, on the other hand, is not.
Joe Biden: Buy a Shotgun
Haha
Good one.
Although shotguns, not such a bad idea.
Thought of that old John Wayne film with Dean Martin. Rio Bravo. Dean can’t shoot worth a darn so John gets ahold of a shotgun for him. Works out in the movie.
I know it is an old debate about home defense. I suppose what you feel comfortable with is best.
Two words, “Technological Democracy”.
We don’t need no stinking politicians.
We can develop a secure internet. One of the many social benefits of which is the ability to vote online about a great many issues.
Politicians are obsolete. We can have real democracy at every level of government. The role of government will no longer be partisan instead managers of the new system maintaining constitutional principles and implementing projects according to the will of the majority.
I’ll vote for the party promising this, knowing they will be putting themselves out of work.
I'd love to see it. But how do you keep bias out of it?
See; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tic Toc, Snapchat, NYT online, CNN online, MSNBC online FOX online etc.
So: Dissatisfied Bernie-bro environmentalist types in California and New York—kick the tires on Green Party nominee Howie "I invented the Green New Deal" Hawkins!
They might be, in addition to voting for Trump. Remember, being disaffected with party politics sometimes means you just vote for the Other party, not the other other party, or the other other other party.
That used to be the case but not anymore. Hard to measure ticket wandering from one election to the next but ticket splitting has virtually disappeared. Was 30-45% of voters in the 60's/70's/80's. Now less than 10%. Presumably a generational difference where boomers always voted for party instead of candidate and that habit of stupidity has persisted with younger cohorts.
Don't vote for the major parties' crappy tickets, vote for these crappy tickets!
Jo Jorgensen does seem to be a nice lady. But she's trying so hard to appease the BLM supporters and other left-leaning groups, that she's alienating many people who consider themselves libertarians. The Libertarian candidate isn't going to win the election, so why worry about alienating anyone? Stand for and espouse true libertarian principles to spread the word to people who actually believe in those principles vs. trying to attract people who believe in BLM and other bullshit principles. I predict she's going to get a fraction of the votes that Gary Johnson got in 2016.
The problem is that "libertarianism" since the word was coined in the late 60s has never been anything other than crypto-Marxism. Standing in solidarity with the violent Marxist psychopaths currently burning down a dozen or so American cities IS standing for an espousing true libertarian principles.
"crypto-Marxism"
LOL
The primary objective of Koch / Reason libertarianism is to make the richest people on the planet even richer. Reason.com is funded by a man whose net worth is currently $57,500,000,000 — and the writers here unanimously think that figure is much too low. Oh yeah, and libertarians want to set the minimum wage at $0.00 / hour.
This is literally the opposite of Marxism.
lol nah man
It's just Tulpa trolling. Ignore it.
Jo has exposed, with one tweet, the racism that still smolders under much of the libertarian movement.
It is racist to be okay with a white Antifa guy getting shot in Austin? You know, one of the Antifa heroes you and Jo love so much?
Yes - her own, the LP's, and yours.
Prioritizing skin color is racist. Full stop.
"Anti racism" perspective defines people as units of an abstact and superficial identity class, not as individuals.
It's color of skin over content of character, and is very much marxist
So you’re saying I don’t have to vote (L) ?
Last time, it was a foregone conclusion in MI, WI and PA. How'd that turn out?
I voted for Johnson last time around, but this time I have to vote for the lesser evil. Won't make a difference in NJ but I'm still voting for Trump this time.
Unicorn, now that Phailing Phil Murphy has decided that the People's Republic of NJ will vote by mail, it is a foregone conclusion that Brain-Damaged Biden and Heels Up Harris will win NJ.
If I thought POTUS Trump had a serious shot at NJ, I would be open to voting for him. But Jo gets my vote for now.
Now that son of a bitch Andy Kim, the current Team D congressman for NJ-3? I am actually voting for the Team R candidate (David Richter) to get that useless bastard out of office. I almost always vote third-party, but for that SOB Kim...I am making a special exception. Fuck him.
You Don't Have to Vote for Your Party's Crappy Ticket
So we don't have to vote for Jorgensen?
Oh no.
You can vote for anyone on the ticket.
No need to make reasons for it. If that is what you are for then go with that.
I am going with Jo. If someone else is Trump or Biden supporter or, is the Green Party getting something, whatever.
And this is why I don't vote for the LIbertarian party anymore.
Can't a party that is basically just a protest vote anyway, actually nominate someone credible? Last time it was Weld, now we've got this Antifa/BLM lady.
Another windmill tilted at. Or, I guess the same one that comes across Welch's path every four years.
Whichever state you live in, it's a forgone conclusion that outcome of the U.S. presidential election isn't going to turn on *your* vote. So relax, be free, vote for the candidate you actually prefer. Yes, you're going to get stuck with one of two really bad choices, but which one we get is not going to depend on your vote. So why be complicit? Vote your conscience -- you'll feel much better and the outcome will be the same.
Or... not. Quite a few states turn on just a few thousand votes. Trump won Wisconsin, for example, by less than 1% of the vote.
All the parent poster is doing is trying to make you think that your vote doesn't count. It does.
Either way, you'll live with the results of your decision for years to come...
"Quite a few states turn on just a few thousand votes."
A few thousand is not one. How many instances of state elections decided by thousands of votes would you expect to see for every one decided by ONE vote? I don't know how to calculate how many instances of 'within 5000' for every instance of 'within 1', but I know it's a pretty big number. 'A few thousand' is nowhere near 'one'. AND, even if a state were decided by a single vote (which has never happened), for that to matter, that state's electoral votes would have to change the outcome. If Hillary had eked out a victory in WI, Trump would still be president.
"You Don't Have to Vote for Your Party's Crappy Ticket"
You also don't have to keep pretending that Trump is the second coming of Hitler. Especially since the main proponents of fascism in the last 4 years have been the people protesting him.
Hillary won California by a wide margin, nearly 9 million votes to Donald Trump's less than 5 million. With an estimated population of nearly 40 million people, clearly the majority of Californians didn't vote for either one of those two crappy choices. But they're still stuck with the same shit as if they'd had.
A lot of those Hillary voters have now moved to Texas.
If you are going to waste your vote, please write in Willie Nelson.
Ron Paul is tanned, rested and ready.
and not much older than Biden
>>like so many Republican voters who claim to be appalled by the behavior of President Donald Trump
name one not Jonah Goldberg go.
LOL at “behavior “. You act like he was getting a hummer in the Oval Office.
Yep, most republicans are now fully in Trumps pocket. All others have converted to donkey
The same 3rd party fantasy. No thanks they have no chance. At this point despite some of my disappointments I am sure I will vote for trump and republicans because the dems are too fucking far left and I don’t relish ending up in a concentration camp or starving to death if they get their hands in the economy.
Yet depending on the state in which you live, your vote for President Trump is likely worthless. It'll count towards the "popular national election" figures, but that doesn't mean anything. 3rd parties are a fantasy only because people are so ingrained in the 2 party mentality that no other party can gain a foothold.
If there's a good 3rd party, I sure as hell haven't seen it
I haven't seen a good 1st or 2nd party.
Yea, that's a given

"It’ll count towards the “popular national election” figures, but that doesn’t mean anything."
Electorally it won't, but it might stop the states clamoring to give their electoral votes to the candidate winning the national popular vote reason to shut up and quietly revoke their membership in that little pact.

"less-than-ideal ticket' - is there any such thing as an "ideal ticket" these days. The primary system isn't designed to give us qualified candidates, it's whoever can get the most hits in against their opponents and bankroll the most money. It's why we have Trump/Biden this year and Trump/Clinton before that. It'd be better to scrap the primary system, have each party screen potential candidates and select the best one. THEN put the ticket forward. In my state with relatively few EC votes, it always goes to the person with D next to their name, so who cares?
The same logic applies to everyone in every state, not just the solid red or blue states. No state has ever been decided by one vote, so the only two rational choices for your vote are A) stay home and don't waste your time, or B) vote for the candidate you like the best, in hopes that the vote tally for that candidate will be reported or at least recorded for posterity.
Next time the LP should nominate one of the Spambots, At least they stick to their messaging and are tenacious in getting it out.
They're all crappy.
My vote is against the two-party system, so yes, I'll vote L.
Hey! I have a novel idea! How about NOT wasting your vote?
I may not love my parties pick, but since I absolutely positively hate the other guy and everything he stands for, I think I'll not cast some sort of "protest vote" that will do nothing but help the other guy.
(This goes both ways, by the way.)
There's not very many, maybe 1-2%?
And Jo Jorgenson believes that married couples where one spouse is <18 the other should be prosecuted for statutory rape regardless of their state's laws on age of consent and age of marriage. That's fucking bizarrely wrong, someone should ask Mary Ruwart about that.
What if they don't have sex?
I don´t think anyone should be prosecuted for having sex with someone older than 15, as long as there are no specific circumstances such as positon of power, but I don´t believe marriages of people under 18 should be legal. No, not even when she is pregnant. No, not even after she has given birth. Libertarians are, rightly, all about hating paedophiles and protecting their daughters with guns from bad guys, which is great, but sometimes it seems many don´t care very much about the fate of teenage girls whose parents don´t care very much either. No, a 16 year old girl should not be someone´s wife.
Vote for Jo Jurgensen (or whatever her name is) in your deep blue enclave of Washington DC or Park Slope, while at the same time casting an illegal absentee ballot for Joe Biden in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc.
Just like Welchie Boy, the Goth Fonzie Wop, and most of the other Reason staffers do!
Thanks for giving me the idea! Pennsylvania is not even a two hour drive from where I live. Think I will drive there next weekend and request an absentee ballot to see if your theory works. Will give my address as the local homeless shelter.
BAN political parties! I vote for anyone but R or D, if those are only options I vote for the challenger, never the incumbent.
The problem with the Libertarian Party is the Libertarians. Guaranteed that no matter who the candidate is, at least 75% will hate him/her for not being true to the faith. This is not a winning strategy folks. And forget about finding any common ground with the two major parties whose entire existence is based upon using government to punish those who don’t agree with them. Virginia is now a reliably blue state so my vote is meaningless anyway, but I will still vote for Jo Jorgenson because she actually is the candidate whose views most closely match mine, and hey, somebody has to...
100% this. Jo isn't perfect, but out of all the people running for president she's the only one I wouldn't feel ashamed to affirmatively pick. It's not about avoiding the thing you hate most, it's about picking what you want, and I want Jo Jorgensen to be president.
This reads like a column for a general publication.
At any rate, I learned my lesson about voting for party when I held my nose in the ballot box in 2016, even after that toad Bill Weld was on the ticket.
Kanye2020
I am 64 years old and had voted in every election up to the last one. I have never voted for a Democratic or Republican presidential candidate. It doesn't work. The flawed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson had the best change and could not even garner 4% of the vote. Perot got 8.4% of the vote.
The Koch foundation now calling itself "Americans for a Limited Government' is trying to persuade conservative not to vote for Trump. That is certainly not going to limit government by giving the election to Biden-Harris! Do they really think conservatives are that stupid? But hey the Koch suckers didn't get their way and switched teams.
I now refuse to vote as a protest, and for the fact that I will not participate in the destruction of America, which is all this elections two major candidates will do.
Given your age and voting record I do believe I may have finally met someone else who voted for John Anderson!
No, but I did vote for Senator Eugene "Scoop" McCarthy of Minnesota in the 1976 election between Ford and Carter.
I have also voted for Libertarian Candidates: Ed Clark 1980, Ron Paul 1988, Bob Barr 2008 and Gary Anderson 2012 and 2016. So no John Anderson in 1980.
I guess your political views change from an twenty year old to a 64 year old!
LL...Truthfully, I don't think refusing to vote is the right way to protest in this instance, and I would ask (with humility and respect) that you reconsider this course of action. Why do I say this?
A lot of good men and women sacrificed their lives to preserve this right. It is the affirmative action by each individual citizen of taking the time to show up and vote that matters. We honor and rememberthose men and women by voting. It really does not matter who you vote for; it does matter that you show up. Our Republic depends on citizens of good conscience to express themselves in the public square, and more importantly, the ballot box.
I served 4 years. I understand honor. There is no honor in what is going on today. Our country sinks further into socialism, totalitarianism and debt every year, regardless of which of the two major parties is in power. The Supreme court refuses to deal with gerrymandering, which is a big part of the problem in my opinion. Sorry, but I respectfully disagree with your assessment.
Imagine if no one voted, how could the politician get up there and say they had a mandate from the voters to install their policies? And you will hear that, if the winner wins by .5 percent in this next election.
There’s never been a better time to vote major party.
It is a 100% certainty that the policy agenda of one or the other major political party will advance, depending on the election outcome.
The parties have never been so conveniently ideologically sorted. Now, maybe you are the rare voter who wants higher capital gains taxes and hates Mexicans. But you’re probably a man without a country no matter how many factions run candidates. It’s still going to be D or R in the end.
So the choice is to continue to let Trump be in charge of the pandemic response and the economy, or to go with the alternative proposal. Hard to decide, I know. Despite all the immediate existential problems we are facing, there still are, somewhere, brown people getting more freedom than you think they deserve. Tough call.
Despite all the immediate existential problems we are facing, there still are, somewhere, brown people getting more freedom than you think they deserve. Tough call.
Quick: Which major party candidate has locked up the most brown people in prison?
You’re welcome?
Sorry Tony, I would go with Trump if I voted, and actually hopes he wins. Not that Trump doesn't have problems. He is not fiscally responsible, and he supports intrusive spying on Americans. He is still way better in every other aspect than Biden\Harris. Biden\Harris will destroy the US economy, spend even more trillions on foolishness and makes prisons like the old Soviet ones where the prisoners are political while criminals go free.
While your vote for president probably doesn't matter to the electoral college, there has been a massive push to eliminate the electoral college. My protest vote four years ago contributed to people claiming that Hillary Clinton "actually" won. I'm not going to do a protest vote for a while.
Two words, “Technological Democracy”. (From a university paper I wrote 35 years ago)
"We" haven't done so so far.
Pure, immediate majoritarianism--the pipe dream of fascists and socialists.
Once the criteria of constitutionality, safety, need and funding are met, It all comes down To what we want to do.
That’s where democracy comes in.
Fascism and socialism have nothing to do with it.
Ditto
Interesting idea but unlikely to change anything. I live in Wisconsin so my vote will matter. I really doubt that if Joe Biden wins California but with a few fewer votes, or Trump win Mississippi with a few less votes it will make a difference. The problem is that states like Mississippi and California are not competitive. Once you get the nomination you get the state. If we want better choices we need to get that in the primaries. To get better primary winners we need to primaries in states that are more representative of this country. I am happy that Biden won after Iowa and New Hampshire. Maybe this is an end to the monopoly of those states and maybe we will see more states come into play in selecting the Presidential Candidates.
Once the criteria of constitutionality, safety, need and funding are met, It all comes down To what we want to do.
That’s where democracy comes in.
Fascism and socialism have nothing to do with it.
Necessarily, when you pick one president for 330 million people, anybody you pick will be considered "crappy" by the vast majority of voters.
Furthermore, we primarily vote for people, not issues. Even if you like the issues politician X runs on, what matters is the ability and truthfulness of politician X to deliver on those issues.
Finally, if you desire particular outcomes, your best strategy is indeed to take the probability of winning into account; a vote for a candidate that has no chance of winning is indeed wasted.
So, yes, if your vote means anything, you necessarily have to vote for crappy candidates, in any form of democracy.
“Furthermore, we primarily vote for people, not issues.....what matters is the ability and truthfulness of politician X to deliver on those issues.“
Uh, you don’t recognize your contradiction do you?
Since what matters are the issues, we should just vote for them and fuck the politicians.
Let Jo in on the debates!!!!!!!
The outcome of this election is really unclear. Everyone can have their own thoughts
Sure, go right ahead and vote for Jo who supports the Marxist Black Lives Matter.
