Brickbat: Dress for Success

The handbook for the Springfield School District in Illinois warns students they must abide by the dress code even while taking part in remote learning in their homes. In particular, they can't wear pajamas. That has some parents upset. "I made the decision for my kids to be at home and I don't really see how any district can come in and say what my kid can't wear in my house," said Elizabeth Ballinger. "I don't think they have any right to say what happens in my house."

It seems the virus 'crisis' is more and more a reason for control over the population. It's 'for the children', or 'saving just one life' and of course, 'the new normal'.
It isn't just the virus. Schools have always been a place devoted to telling children what to do, and that often takes precedence over the curriculum. In particular, what do the administrators have to do now that they have no buildings to maintain and no buses to run? They come up with new rules of course.
Public schools don't teach you how to think; they teach you what to think.
And private schools don't? Since when?
I quit working at shoprite and now I make $65-85 per/h. How? I'm working online! My work didn't exactly make me happy so I decided to take a chance on something new…ABc after 4 years it was so hard to quit my day job but now I couldn't be happier.

Private schools cannot teach anything until parents _choose_ to send their kids there. Public schools are paid whether or not parents choose them - with money ultimately collected at gunpoint - and also have the power to send men with guns to drag children into their classrooms.
I seems to me that the one room schoolhouse was actually dedicated to education but that all changed once they adopted the Pavlovian style conditioning/training to make good worker drones over education that it all went south. Now everyone knows exactly what to do when the next bell rings whether it's break time, recess, lunch, next shift, next class, whatever, it's all about complying to the demands of the bell.

Yet these suburban women will be voting democrat of course to save the children.
Gonna get a lot worse if they win.
This time it will be different. We just haven't tried hard enough. It was the wreckers and kulaks that sabotaged our efforts. We need to get rid of them first.
Worse than Trump? Not possible, when you hit bottom, the only way to go is up.
Not if you have mining explosives.
Seriously people, calm down. The school district isn't going to send a swat team.
Parents, get your little kids dressed for school before logging in for the morning. Have some pride in yourselves for goodness sake.
Seriously people, calm down. The school district isn’t going to send a swat team.
Of course they're not going to send out SWAT just because little Timmy isn't dressed properly. They're going to send out Compliance Request Officers because little Timmy wasn't dressed properly and refused to comply with their request that he do so and the fact that they look exactly like SWAT is mere coincidence.
^this. If you seriously think that some bureaucrat asshole won't send in a SWAT team somewhere, you haven't been paying enough attention to the, what, last 2 decades of policing?
They won't send SWAT. It will become a DCFS issue. If you can't have your kids dress for an 8 a.m. zoom meeting, maybe you're otherwise neglecting your kids.
You assume that no DCFS issue will result in a SWAT raid. Plainly, that's not true.
Nor, sadly, is that the only case.
We gone from assuming the dress code is arbitrary to assuming a SWAT team will bust down the door.
Your leaps of imagination doesn't make for evidence. Your argument sucks.
Actually, I don't make that starting assumption. The dress code could be completely reasonable and educationally appropriate.
However, it was wildly wrong for TFTF to blithely assume that disagreements over petty policies can never escalate into life-threatening interactions with the police. The evidence is quite clear that such escalations happen far more often than they should.
Which gets back to the general principle - "Never pass a law that you're not willing to kill people over." If the issue isn't worth killing over (and dress codes aren't), then maybe you should be using other techniques like education and persuasion instead of bureaucratic rule-making.
Once they get they have a reason they have a foot in the door. Then it becomes a fishing trip. They'll cross reference with LOE's and find the homeowner has 4 firearms. They'll call that an arsenal and send SWAT, because the cops need to be safe. When the cops show up the dog gets shoot, for safety. Then they seize any cash, because that's suspicious, and grab the computer, then order the kid strip searched to check for bruises. When the parent protest they get a cavity search, with cops watching and laughing, then they get a bill for it in the mail...
There is a mindset for productivity.
Roll out of bed adequately early. Make your bed.
Pick up your dirty clothes. Groom yourself. Wear something appropriate for the venue, even if you are not physically there.
Use the restroom and flush before signing on. Sign on 5 minutes early, not 5 minutes late.
These are the soft skills that are associated strongly with where people land in life. If your planned landing zone is unskilled labor with nothing more than a HS diploma, then by all means arrive at school with bed-head wearing pajamas.
Found the Boomer.
Fuck that. Some of the great thinkers of history and our time were/are famously sloppy or at least casual.
Sure, tell yourself you must be more productive than Bill Gates because you're so much neater and more punctual. Maybe you'll hit it lucky like Chance, the punctual gardener and snappy dresser.
Unfortunately, they are the exception. And did not succeed in a group setting. So much about success in the corporate world is about conformity whether in appearance or activity. It is why so many corporate types play golf.
dude no.
meanwhile the parents are working from home in their sweats
Your assuming I'm wearing pants at all.

You can't have your video camera on unless you meet dress code would be acceptable.
You have to meet dress code just because is not acceptable.
You can’t have your video camera on unless you meet dress code would be acceptable.
I think it needs a bit of fleshing out (If their camera's not on should they be considered 'present'? If they're not present do we continue to expend the time/bandwidth?) but, yeah.
For my kids, they need to have the camera on and need to follow dress code but not uniforms. While "no pajamas" wasn't spelled out explicitly, it was quite clear that the dress code requirement should be read as "no pajamas".
"I don't think they have any right to say what happens in my house."
Well, it seems to the rest of the world that you actually give them the right by consistently voting for the fascists that pass these laws and rules. Turn off the damn camera.
In fairness, a number of districts have passed rules requiring both staff and students to have the camera on during instruction. It's a useful way of monitoring the class and ensuring that they are paying attention. It's also effective at monitoring facial expressions and body language for clues that students are struggling with a concept.
Personally, I agree. Effective teaching is hard enough without tying one hand behind the teacher's back. Let them observe their students, at least during the core instructional time when they would be doing the same thing in a physical classroom.

I agree that it's a stupid, interim fix. The idea that 20 or so kids all have to be grouped together at the same time, learning the same thing, at the same pace is a relic of one-room school houses that online learning should absolutely obliterate.
I've got one kid that could use a good portion of the instruction time, another that would consume the full instruction time socializing whether he needed the academic help or not, and another that doesn't need the full instruction time and regards the face-to-face instruction time as a waste. When it was a fixed number of teachers in a fixed space in a school building for a fixed amount of time, standardized instruction time made some sense. Now that none of that applies, the idea of standard dress codes between kids who may not even see each other is nonsense.
Better pajamas than an NRA t-shirt.
You kids don't sleep in the same NRA pajamas you had when you were their age?
It’s not about pajamas, they don’t want to have to see messages they disagree with. What if little Timmy is wearing a MAGA hat? The Biden voting teacher would have an emotional meltdown and there goes the classes for the rest of the day.
Now THAT would get a SWAT team sent to your house for sure, the teacher would probably claim child abuse or some shit. Can't have young impressionable minds having opinions or ideas, can we?
It's child porn!
If you are going to have two way video, dress presentable, at least the parts that are going to be on camera. That really is not too much to ask.
Agree. I'm guessing this policy doesn't have anything to do with little Timmy's power ranger onesie; the board probably doesn't want middle and high school students logging on with tits and fat rolls spilling out on camera.
Soft skills are becoming a foreign language in the workforce. A reasonable dress code is an acceptable requirement among students whether the school is public, private, charter, or home schooled.
So, who else has worn a suit coat, tie, and pajama pants to video conferences and interviews?
You actually put pants on?... overachiever.
It's cute that the parents think they have any rights in the Socialist Republic of Illinoisistan.
My local school district has in-school pajama days every year.
Do camisole tops and yoga pants count as PJs? I'm sure my kids' gym teacher wore other articles of clothing at some point, but I don't remember them.
She still thinks it's "her" house and "her" kids. That's cute.
Elizabeth has no clue who she votes for.

What, are they doing this via 2-way video? If so, what does everyone see, a screen broken into tiny frames for each participant? Or is it "hot seat" mode, showing everyone whoever's speaking at the moment?
Why do they even need to see the students? Even if the student's giving a visual presentation, there's no need for the student's mug to appear, just the stuff they're presenting.
If I were the child and it were 2-way video, wireless off battery, I'd do it on the toilet, in the tub, horizontal on the floor or couch, hanging in a tree, etc.
Yes, they are generally doing this via 2-way video. And yes, it's mostly with the participants in the frame layout.
Teachers need it because they get valuable clues about attention span, confusion, understanding and participation from the facial expressions and body language of their students. Teaching without being able to see their faces has been shown to be much less effective.
Sure, it would be perfect if Albert and Betsy chimed in freely and verbalized clear, concise questions any time they were slightly confused. That's just not natural kid behavior. It's not even natural for adults. As long as you have a one-to-many teaching relationship, the teacher needs non-verbal communications.
