Diversity Training Isn't Just Expensive, It's Counterproductive

"Well-intentioned efforts to celebrate diversity may in fact reinforce racial stereotyping," say two Carleton College faculty.

|

"In response to the killing of George Floyd, the massive Black Lives Matter protests and pressure from students," write Amna Khalid and Jeffrey Aaron Snyder, "dozens of colleges and universities have made public commitments to new anti-racism initiatives." Unfortunately, the Carleton College faculty members say such efforts are not only expensive but often counterproductive, actually stoking the very divisions they are supposed to heal.

There is evidence…that introducing people to the most commonly used readings about white privilege can reduce sympathy for poor whites, especially among social liberals.

There is also evidence that emphasizing cultural differences across racial groups can lead to an increased belief in fundamental biological differences among races. This means that well-intentioned efforts to celebrate diversity may in fact reinforce racial stereotyping.

With its emphasis on do's and don't's, diversity training tends to be little more than a form of etiquette. It spells out rules that are just as rigid as those that govern the placement of salad forks and soup spoons. The fear of saying "the wrong thing" often leads to unproductive, highly scripted conversations.

Historians Khalid and Snyder cast a gimlet eye on forcing students to engage in activities such as "privilege walks" (in which participants are moved ahead in line based on parental income or educational attainment) and "culture bingo" (which asks students whether they can define melanin or if they know Chinese birth signs). Summarizing research of similar corporate programs, they note

the impact of diversity training at more than 800 companies over three decades…[was] that the positive effects are short-lived and that compulsory training generates resistance and resentment.

Citing costs of between $2,000 and $6,000 for one-day training sessions of 50 people, Khalid and Snyder instead counsel budget-conscious schools to use funds to increase the number of people from historically under-represented populations (including class along with race, gender, and sexual orientation). They argue that teaching primary texts in classroom settings will do more to spur discussion and common understanding than exercises typically run by administrators or outside consultants.

Campus communities don't need diversity consultants to lead workshops about terms such as "microaggressions," "micro-invalidations" and "micro-insults." Instead they should discuss thought-provoking works such as poet Claudia Rankine's book "Citizen," a personal account that "strips bare the everyday realities of racism."…

To explain the concept of "intersectionality," replace "social identity wheel" exercises with an examination of the 1977 Combahee River Collective Statement, whose Black feminist authors insisted that it was not possible to "separate race from class from sex oppression."

Their whole case is here.

    5. “The Science” is bullshit. This isn’t science. It’s the latest dogma, based on recycled old dogma. The self-declared scientists are just witch-doctors who exercise their own privileges: an immunity from a truly critical inquiry into their “method”.

    1. I thought we all agreed that when anyone quotes or links to CNN, they deserve public scorn and a good ass-beating.

      1. That card has run it’s course! I’m curious, what media should we be referencing?

        1. Letters from your grandmother.
She knew how it really worked.

  2. “…cast a gimlet eye”

Damn! That’s ranks with Chardonnay wisdom!

    1. I prefer Bourbon courage myself.

  3. Not only does an obsessive focus on diversity prove to be unproductive, but it is actually counterproductive.

Now tell us something we don’t already know.

  4. It’s a massive fucking scam. Not only are the ideas behind it totally untested and often disconnected from reality. There is lots of evidence that it either does nothing or makes things worse.
It’s pathetic how desperate people are to avoid being called racist that they will swallow any bullshit that some college professor came up with if they have a good sales pitch.
People who actually don’t like racism and want better race relations should be actively fighting this pseudoscientific bullshit.

    1. Have you read the book “White Fragility”, by Robin DiAngelo? It’s a very enlightening read, and it taught me a lot about my own racism.

Basically, the whole reason you say that proves your racism.

      1. Poe’s Law in action. I truly cannot tell if this is sarcastic or not. *sigh*

        1. Former writer for The Onion; hardest hit.

        2. Ah crap. I fell for it. Look at the name, has to be parody.

          1. Even with that, it could be a user name from some other attempt at snark. I mean, yes, I caught that earlier as well, but… there are definitely people who would say that with a straight face. (Oh crap, did I just insult the LGTPB&J community?)

      2. I have read excerpts of that book and place it in the same category as the implicit bias training stuff. It is disgusting garbage that will only make race relations worse. We need to be working to get beyond race being a major category for defining people, not making the distinctions and divisions stronger.

        1. It’s essentially – – “you’re a racist and if you disagree with me, you’re a bigger racist”. The only goal of this book is to shut down conversation, which BTW, leaves people internalize their thoughts instead of airing them and pisses people off because they are told what to think.

$10K per day? For half that pay, I’ll tell you you’re fucked up all day long and twice on Saturday…. and promise to make your masochistic ass love being flogged till you cry with painjoy. Handouts are free but self-shaming guides and charter membership in the “I’m a loser” club require additional fees, collected by me of course.

      3. Isn’t ‘White Fragility’ just another extension of the idea of the benevolent white? Which, I’m told, is also racist…

      4. The book is premised on a circular argument. The thesis: you are a racist. Denial is proof you are a racist, albeit a stubborn one. If you acknowledge that you are a racist, then of course, you are a racist.

Anything you do or do not do means that you are a racist.

        Stupid book for shallow thinkers.

    2. Or just accept the fact that some people can be assholes sometimes.

      1. Might I suggest that ALL people can be assholes, sometimes.

But SOME people are assholes, all of the time.

    3. Douglas Murray talks about how in our current climate, accusations of racism are un-provable, and therefore essentially impossible to defend against. That’s by design.

It was also pointed out that we lamented thousands (tens of thousands?) of college kids graduating from grievance studies programs with no job prospects. The joke was on us. They did get jobs. They work in every HR department and every Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility office in the land, often earning six figure salaries to peddle social justice solutions to a rabble of captive-audience employees.

      1. If what you say it at all accurate, then they presage the fall of capitalism and likely Western civilization. It cannot stand with such a cancer, on such a scale, at work in its bowels.

        1. Small of the more pessimistic thinkers I follow suggest that the decline started several decades ago. I agree with part of the thesis in regards to The Long March on the Institutions. How bad it’ll get, how can anyone say. But I do think that there is an inability of the people who benefit most from Liberal Western society to defend it. (looking at you, people in the chattering classes).

We tweet, we instagram, we snapchat, we type on phones out daily thoughts and feelings, we order goods delivered to our doorstep, we telecommute, people of all ethnicities are making dramatic strides in wealth, college education, positions of prestige and power that would have been unheard of thirty years ago– yet we’re told that everything is worse than ever in history by an army of screaming infants throwing fireworks at a federal building, while a media gives them intellectual cover.

I’m glad I’ll be checking out soon.

          1. ( applause )

          2. You are ill then? I am sorry to hear that.

        2. The only cure here is a large scale deployment of “go fuck yourself” directed at these assholes. Unfortunately, I don’t see it coming because they are well-armed in these corporate positions and hold your job hostage to their goodthink.

    4. Hi…..Making money online more than $15k just by doing simple work from home. I have received $18376 last month. 5. What they’re saying: “Yes, of course we need to value diverse voices and experiences.”

What they’re thinking: “I’m still not living in the same neighborhood as a bunch of ghetto hood rats. Gentrification forever.”

      1. So true. We agree that all races should have access to all neighborhoods, well except for my neighborhoods of course…

  5. Diversity training teaches that companies will spend big bucks on any damn thing that comes down the read. It also teaches the weak minded that they can’t believe their lying eyes.

    1. Libertarians, in what seems to be a desperate attempt to curry favor with the left– in what I’m guessing is a misguided attempt to show that they take the ‘best of both sides’, have really missed the boat on the current culture. There are a lot of very Good, solid small-c conservatives who have begun to take on Diversity-for-its-own-sake with great effect. There’s nothing libertarian at all about the Diversity Industry. It is, at its core a fundamentally racist ideal that’s being peddled under the banner of anti-racism.

Someone like Brenan O’Neill (Reason Contributor!) makes excellent libertarian arguments in these areas of culture. The Libertarians need to find a candidate with that kind of ability to forcefully push back against the neo-Marxism of so-called polite society.

  6. Companies do this to limit damages from lawsuits. Otherwise they don’t care.

Schools are indoctrination human farms. I wouldn’t trust many people graduating today from public schools and most universities.

    1. I disagree, they do it because the HR departments are full of studies graduates, damages from lawsuits are set by the trial lawyers, the other wing of the Democratic party. This started when they went from the Personnel department to HR. I miss those days; it was run by a middle aged woman with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth named Madge. Now you have to deal with Tad and Kevwanda and they all talk in that HR voice that is soothing and insulting at the same time, it makes you want to jump over the desk at strangle them.

  7. Well-intentioned efforts

Is there any evidence to support this?

    1. Just because something is ineffective does not mean it is a malicious socialist plot to destroy America. Most of the people who buy into this stuff believe this is a good way to stop racism. I think that human nature is just fucked,

    2. Yes. They never stop.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.

      — CS Lewis, 1948

      1. One of my favorite quotes; it occurs to me often, nowadays.

  8. Diversity training is basically welfare for those who majored in griefer studies with no real prospects of contributing to society.

    1. Extremely lucrative welfare.

  9. What??? Trying to “cure” racism with more racism, including official government or institutional racism, still leaves people thinking like racists? Unpossible!

    1. ^^ THIS lol…

  11. “Well-intentioned efforts to celebrate diversity may in fact reinforce racial stereotyping,” say two Carleton College faculty.

Have they got any examples of these “well-intentioned efforts to celebrate diversity”? Because the shit I’ve seen ain’t well-intentioned and it ain’t a celebration. It’s meanness and hatred and evil all the way.

    1. Yup. My employer made everyone go to a talk about acceptance of people who identify as genders C through Z. Sometimes many at once or different ones on different days. The permutations are infinite.

The presenter was asked about the tolerance for people with traditional values and viewpoints and she (she said she was nonbinary (all of the above?!?) but she was a she) literally responded that since traditional people are comfortable in society, she really did not care if now they were feeling discriminated against.

Guess how many people’s minds she changed with THAT argument and perspective?

  13. Counterproductive? It makes executives and managers look good and makes race hustlers millions of dollars. Sounds like a productive enterprise to me.

  14. Law of unintended consequences. People who teach these courses believe in what they are doing and feel that their efforts are going to make the world better. But, maybe these programs may have the opposite result…
I pasted what follows from Google.
California university system makes ethnic studies or social justice a required class. At a time of national reckoning over racial injustice, the largest four-year public university system in the U.S. has taken a major step to make sure its future students ponder the effects of systemic discrimination.Jul 22, 2020
I got to admit. I do laugh at the snarky references in the comments to these classes as Grievance Studies. When I was in school, I studied engineering so didn’t have to waste my time on any of that b.s., but I guess times are a changin…

    1. People who teach these courses believe in what they are doing and feel that their efforts are going to make the world better.

I’m not so sure about some of them. The White Fragility formula, for example, seems designed to be “bulletproof” using circular logic. To me it looks completely deliberate and cynical.

      1. I’m not so sure about some of them. The White Fragility formula, for example, seems designed to be “bulletproof” using circular logic. To me it looks completely deliberate and cynical.

And really backfires with some people. If the game is “heads I win, tails you lose”, I’m just going to punch the motherfucker and take the quarter.

        1. It comes with a very deliberate price tag at $10K per day too. That right there kinda rules out altruism as a motive.

          >>”And really backfires with some people. If the game is “heads I win, tails you lose”, I’m just going to punch the motherfucker and take the quarter.”

That game has a tendency to work really well with young hipsters who are desperately trying to avoid their own cancel culture turning on them and need to be invited to the parties and/or get laid by being just like all their friends. But most people hit an age where they get tired of being told what to think/wear, where to go. Perhaps the goal is to get them to think this way long enough where they forget that it was someone else’s idea.

      2. Yeah. I’d be pissed if I had to read “White Fragility” for a required class to get a University Diploma. Yes, people can be racist, which isn’t good, but all people are racist, opinionated or at least a bit of a shithead. It’s like if there was a book called “Your Husband’s an Asshole“, and all the housewives of America tried to pass it off to their husbands and told them to read it. In fact, I am certain there are many books just like that, with different titles. I just googled that title name and I found many articles with variants on that title.

  15. Turns out, people get upset if they are told that they are racist and advantaged because of the color of their skin. It is an absolutely surprising result, totally unexpected.

    1. That just shows how racist they are.

    2. “Red and yellow, black and white,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.”

  16. Diversity training is pure horse shit and always has been. It is simply the torture you must sit through to be employed.

    1. But the “liberals” who caused all this required horse shit training are the champions of “freeing” people from billionaire fat-cats, racists, sexists, discrimination, white supremacy or whatever imagination they can make up….

Or; maybe they’re just “freeing” people of their own “freedom”… 🙂

  18. Wait, allowing a bunch of openly racist progressives to hector everyone with a patently racist philosophy of blood guilt results in an increase in racist attitudes? Are you sure about that?

  19. This racist philosophy works. I have a very smart and very talented young relative who didn’t have a racist bone in her body. She went away to get her degree at an elite northeastern liberal school.

Now she is a crazy progressive with profoundly racist views. She believes that only black writers can write black characters. And only Asian characters can have martial arts skills… because otherwise that is cultural appropriation.

Strangely, although only a trans actor could possibly play a trans character for a trans director, a guy or trans actor is allowed to play a straight, cis character.

And although a black author can speak authoritatively about white culture, the reverse is not acceptable.

It is a complex array of racial and ethnic taboos and strictures that makes no sense outside their own bubble.

    1. The true value in “commie education” or should I say indoctrination.

Not sure what the politicians were thinking when they gave themselves a 100% market share monopoly on the “education” of all children. I wonder if the politicians would be okay with Google, Amazon, Apple, or Facebook carrying a 100% market-share monopoly on day-care.

      1. EXCELLENT POINT!

      2. You forgot Disney.

    2. FLAG WAS A MISTAKE!! Sorry!!!

    3. I too have a very smart and very talented young relative who didn’t have a racist bone in her body. She went away to get her degree at an elite southern school. As such, she missed out on the indoctrination.

Upon graduation, she took a job with the RNC – not in a policy position, obviously. She couldn’t tell people where she worked. Aside from the social shunning, she would never have been able to date. Being anything other than a rabid progressive in the DC bubble makes you an unperson.

      1. Interesting.

Different relative of mine, also now at a southern elite school. A big state engineering school, not the super-liberal kind. She sent me a photo from her first day of class – the professors all had their Pronouns listed. They went around class asking people their pronouns the first day. It was a big thing. Everyone had to list their pronouns.

Dumbest bit of virtue signalling ever. And there was an inordinately high proportion of non-standard pronouns, way north of the percentages you would expect based on rates of transgender and other non-binary preferences. So there probably is something to the “they are trying to be cool or fit in” aspect as well. And perhaps a handful who are going with it for a lark.

Her brother, case in point. He declared his pronouns variously as “Potato, llama, kumquat” and “You can determine my pronouns by correct application of the rules of the English language” on his first day.

Teenage dudes. What are ya gonna do?

If a white man was wandering back and forth in my front yard, my neighbors would call the cops. Race is irrelevant when it comes to Neighborhood Watch. These authors assume we are simple-minded!!

  21. “There is evidence…that introducing people to the most commonly used readings about white privilege can reduce sympathy for poor whites, especially among social liberals.”

Well, of course, since all poor whites, just like everyone in the South, are Trump voters, and deserve only scorn, not sympathy.

    1. Someone not so long ago called them deplorable.

  22. Yeah, diversity training – are they talking about my portfolio? I already have a financial advisor, but thanks for the tip.

Jim Crowe is a Democratic, and the Democratic party has not relinquished its’ separate but equal policy, they’re just introducing a new-line for the 21st century, The new models look and sound reasonable, and with so many benign sounding ideas they’ve converted many of those they want to keep down, clamoring for this treatment. Do you know what the phenom is called when the captive identifies with their captor in that manner? The Stockholm Syndrome.

Most everybody has one reaction or the other to the slogan, Black Lives Matter; mine is humorous and I want to add the word ‘too’, but out of good sense I refrain. The blatant silliness of that is not apparent to the silly; nor the damage they are doing, especially to those exhibiting a profound identity crisis., seriously.

Find me the psychologist who advocates that a person identifies themselves by a superficial distinction of their humanity, and you’ve found another treacherous quack; and they need to be cancelled.

This I know from 1st hand experience; and it doesn’t need to be a superficial distinction either, it can be real distinction, one in which automatically instills the I – Thou relationship. That’s your systematic racism, you’re go to receiver when I trivialize my own humanity by asserting to be this or that, then that’s what you are this or that; which by your own admission is less than others.

I won’t go into a lengthy explanation, but when you do the above, you’re creating the environment, the miasma – THE LENS you see every action.

YOU ARE NOT AN INJURED BRAIN
