A DeKalb County, Georgia, special education teacher has resigned after the school district opened an investigation into comments he made on a social media post that showed a man appearing to kneel on the neck of a toddler. The photo shows a white child pinned to the ground by two people who appear to be black. One of them appears to be kneeling on the child's neck. The caption reads "blm now." "Your [sic] doing it wrong!" teacher Brian Papin wrote. "One knee on center of the back one on the neck and lean into it until death! You saw the video!" That's an apparent reference to a video showing a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, who died after being detained by cops.

I used to live in DeKalb County. My knowledge of the politics of the area actually makes this result kind of shocking. The north of the county is mixed race, but more white. The south is mostly African American. Cynthia McKinney was my representative, if that gives you an idea of the politics.

When I lived there they had a serious problem with delinquent property taxes, so they hired a county manager and tasked him with collecting those taxes. He brought in a collection agency and they sent out notices to all delinquent property owners demanding payment - or else face liens or foreclosure.

Well, that got the attention of the county commission. They determined that it was racist to collect property taxes in the southern half of the county, and therefore directed that they only be allowed to collect from the northern half.

So firing someone for a racially insensitive joke that runs in the correct PC direction is a bit surprising.

That being said, I'm opposed to the hysteria over jokes. We should be allowed to make offensive jokes. We should be allowed to make jokes that are in poor taste. The fact that he's a teacher who works with special ed kids cuts both ways. Sure, he should know better and parents probably aren't going to want their kids teacher joking about abusing kids even if race wasn't a factor.... but he's also a teacher who works with special ed students all day. Blowing off a little steam joking about the kids he has to deal with should be an expected behavior.

We really need to grow back a sense of humor.
