More Mudslinging in the Debate Over School Reopening
Plus: World population could peak sooner than expected, data cast doubt on vaping and lung cancer link, massive Twitter hack had inside help, and more...

Efforts to help homeschooling parents draw criticism, because everything is partisan these days. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is saying it's "not acceptable for schools not to reopen" classrooms this fall. It would be nice if federal authorities rejected a one-size-fits-all approach to reopening schools and instead let states and municipalities decide for themselves what's best for local students.
Still, much of the current anger at DeVos and the Department of Education's plans for pandemic-era schooling is woefully misplaced.
For instance, sociologist Jessica Calarco complains in a New York Times piece aimed at DeVos that the CARES Act only provides $13.5 billion to help schools make safety changes, not the $245 billion that the Council of Chief State School Officers requested. "Instead, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is pressuring schools to open and threatening to cut off funds to public schools that don't fully open in the fall," writes Calarco. "She has suggested that those federal funds could be diverted to families to help pay for private or religious education. She has already put in place 'micro-grants' for families that want to home-school their children this fall."
But DeVos had no control of the CARES Act or how it allocates funding; that was Congress. And aside from that complaint, what exactly is Calarco upset about—that homeschooling families might get some help? That people who have immuno-compromised kids or otherwise have good reason to keep them out of physical schools may still have some options? That federal money set aside for schools that are now not opening might be reallocated to schools that are? What strange complaints.
Sure, the usual caveats apply here about the federal government overspending and usurping local decision-making through targeted funds conditioned on political demands. Still, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea to withhold funds designated to improve school safety from schools that aren't planning to reopen and offer it instead to programs that could make a difference for students and their struggling parents.
And it's simply silly to pretend (as Calarco does) that providing grants to support homeschooling, private schooling, and charter schooling is somehow likely to increase "inequality in education."
Calarco laments that "families with more resources and more flexibility will presumably be the ones most able to keep their children out of unsafe schools," since "wealthy families may hire private tutors or send their children to private schools that can afford to minimize risk." Yet that's exactly what DeVos' efforts at funding school choice options are meant to offset!
Ultimately, the department's emphasis on school choice at a time like this is refreshing, even if DeVos' rhetoric doesn't fully match her department's efforts. With so much uncertainty, different families facing widely varying risks and economic circumstances, and such huge stakes across the board, it only makes sense to try and meet people where they are rather than trying to force all families and educators back into the same pre-pandemic patterns. Restructuring federal education priorities to give families across a range of socioeconomic brackets greater choice is a great step.
Alas, many commentators seem so primed to believe the worst about DeVos and the Trump-era Department of Education that any good they are doing is getting lost in partisan mudslinging and internet conspiracy theories.
Last week, for instance, a meme went around that falsely quoted DeVos as saying "only" 0.02 percent of U.S. students, or about 14,740 kids, would die as a consequence of reopening schools. There's no public record of DeVos saying that, however. DeVos spokesperson Angela Morabito told USA Today that "the Secretary has never and would never say such a thing. This is a total lie. She would not be working to get kids back in school if it were unsafe."

A new study on vaping and lung disease finds earlier links were due to vapers who are also current or former cigarette smokers. "Previously documented associations between e-cigarette use and lung disease are driven by users who are also smokers. Applied econometric methods are needed to identify causal effects, from Donald S. Kenkel, Alan D. Mathios, and Hua Wang," tweeted the National Bureau of Economic Research in summary.

World population to peak earlier than expected, say scientists. It's strange to think how not very long ago, overpopulation was such a huge concern. Now, we're rapidly nearing a period of population decline, scientists say.
"United Nations demographers have been anticipating since last year that the world's population may stop growing by 2100 as fertility rates decline, projecting a peak of 10.9 billion people by century's end, compared with roughly 7.8 billion now," reports The New York Times. And that estimate may be too conservative:
… a study published on Tuesday in The Lancet, the medical journal, has challenged that forecast, with major economic and political implications. The study asserted that the global population could peak at 9.7 billion by 2064—nearly four decades earlier—and decline to 8.8 billion by 2100.
Moreover, the study concluded, the elderly will make up a bigger chunk of the total than foreseen in the U.N. forecast, and the populations of at least 23 countries, including Japan, Thailand, Italy and Spain, could shrink by more than 50 percent. The study also projected significant declines in the working-age populations of China and India, the two most populous countries, portending a weakening in their global economic power.
The study's projections, if borne out, also carry significant consequences for the United States, whose economy is expected to trail China's in size by 2035. As China's working-age population declines in the second half of the century, the study said, the United States could reclaim the top spot economically by 2098 — if immigration continues to replenish the American work force.

First she wanted college rapists to go free, now she wants our children dead.
That way, in the future there will be fewer college rapists.

Well, at least .02% of them.
It would be nice if federal authorities rejected a one-size-fits-all approach to reopening schools and instead let states and municipalities decide for themselves what's best for local students.
So what's stopping the states and municipalities from doing just that?
So what’s stopping the states and municipalities from doing just that?
Exactly. They act like the Federal government isn't just pulling the money to do any of this out of their asses. The states are just as capable of taxing the shit out of their citizens.
The states are just as capable of taxing the shit out of their citizens.
In NJ, we pay "fees" to the municipal utilities association for that.
It would be nice if federal authorities rejected a one-size-fits-all approach to reopening schools and instead let states and municipalities decide for themselves what's best for local students.
Well look who wants the Stand in the Schoolhouse Door 2.0.
Education is not among the enumerated powers in the Constitution.
You need to read the unabridged Constitution. Ask John Roberts for his copy.
If the Founding White Guys had foreseen how Federal grants of money would be used to control states like a bunch of marionettes, I’m sure they would have forbidden the practice in the Constitution.
Hamilton 2: Founding White Guys
For Hamilton 2, they could do, like, an all-Latino cast.
Why not just make it penguins if you plan to make thing up anyway.
Too many penguin movies out there already.
Would it be racist to suggest monkeys?
No.
It would be racist to suggest that they'd already done that one.
See how this works?
Zing
'Interstate compact' IS among those powers.
No State shall, without the Consent of Congress,... enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power,
That REQUIRES Congress to structure the terms of the compact and to (broadly) oversee it.
And the fact is that all 50 states and DC and three territories agreed that an education compact was both necessary - and joined it when it was formed in 1967.
Even if that compact and programs of that compact got funded by the feds (totally constitutional), it would be very different than the current system. There is no role whatsoever for the executive branch beyond the direct education responsibilities of the feds (Indian schools, DeptofDefense bases, DC, territories). The compact itself is managed by the states - either seconding state employees there or by hiring people. Therefore, there is also no federal mandating - and no funds that are purely contingent on that mandating
I do not understand why people who purport to be both 'constitutionalist' and 'libertarian' do not understand the power of interstate compacts to at least drive decentralization and reduce spending. Stop trying to uselessly piss into the wind re getting rid of DoEd. TRANSFER it, virtually wholesale, to that interstate compact. If some function has value to the states, then they can gradually assume responsibility for funding at least most of it. If it doesn't, then it will wither away. The only parts that don't get transferred - civil rights transferred to DoJ, Indian/DC/DoD stays federal but becomes merely a member of that compact.
Get that to work with education - and it becomes VERY easy to see how that same approach can be used for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Agriculture, Housing, Urban Development, Transportation, FEMA/DHS, etc.
"It would be nice if federal authorities rejected a one-size-fits-all approach to reopening schools"
Normally, I'd agree. But since there is not a single valid reason for any school not to be open, there is really only one size.
It would be nicer if the feds weren't involved in schools at all and had no say in the school reopenings...
But it would also be nice for the USSC to be consistent and declare schools open based on the right to education under the guidance they pushed to force local schools to teach all kids including illegal immigrants.
Also since they are also offering grants etc for those who can't or don't want to go to school. I don't see how that is one size for all that pretty much gives everyone a chance but Reason doesn't make much reason anymore
She has suggested that those federal funds could be diverted to families to help pay for private or religious education.

The news media is a joke.
LOL
"The Labor Department separately said new unemployment claims by laid-off workers decreased by a seasonally adjusted 10,000 to 1.3 million for the week ended July 11, extending a trend of gradual declines from a peak of 6.9 million in late March."
https://www.wsj.com/articles/us-retail-sales-report-data-june-2020-11594846181?
From the same story:
"The Commerce Department on Thursday said the June increase in retail sales—a measure of purchases at stores, at restaurants and online—totaled $524.3 billion, up from $487.7 billion in May and nearly back to pre-pandemic levels. The total was driven by a pickup in sales at motor vehicle dealers, furniture, clothing and electronic stores."
The durable goods sales are a good sign, and people are usually reluctant to buy news clothes when they think things are getting worse, too.
I expected to see every headline painted as dark as possible as we approach election day, but it looks like we're already past that point--when declining unemployment claims are considered bad news. It's important to keep our opinions grounded in facts so we don't make fools of ourselves, but it isn't enough to simply site facts as they're tweeted. We should understand what they mean.
Yet that's exactly what DeVos' efforts at funding school choice options are meant to offset!
Let's not muddle things with facts and logic, LizBro.
If there's no inperson schooling, why do we need to continue to pay admin, bus drivers, secretaries or half the teaching staff? Also shouldn't that be a bipartisan sentiment? fewer teachers can teach the whole grade virtually.
You monster! No NEA endorsement for you!
Universities have been doing the lecture hall model for decades.
What the fuck does paying school staff have to do with teaching kids?
You could say the same thing about most teachers.
Because those l kids will need those jobs to be there when they grow up without any skills because DeVos didn't write the schools a blank check.
^
Ever heard of public sector unions?
The teachers I know are not going back. They are piling up reasons to not go back. It is pretty nice sitting at home picking up the paycheck and being "safe" for them. They are posting on FB anything and everything to inflame the panic.
My wife has a lot of FB friends that are teachers and their doing the same thing.
"It's strange to think how not very long ago, overpopulation was such a huge concern. Now, we're rapidly nearing a period of population decline, scientists say."
Call me a genius, but I wasn't worried then, and I'm not worried now.
The new panic du jour is POPULATION COLLAPSE!!!!
Caused by global climate warming change?
Well, indirectly, yes. The root cause is white males raised in nuclear families from countries with imperialist-colonial histories... and something about capitalism.
Either that, or the decline in sperm count as temperatures warm.
Yeah, the equatorial zone is a real human wasteland.
No, since global climate nonsense has failed to engender the proper level of panic, they will bring back "The Next Ice Age is coming".
overpopulation was such a huge concern. Now, we’re rapidly nearing a period of population decline, scientists say.
'Scientists say' is just another euphemism for 'fuck you, that's why'. I will just leave this here:
The Ehrlichs stand by the basic ideas in the book, stating in 2009 that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future" and believe that it achieved their goals because "it alerted people to the importance of environmental issues and brought human numbers into the debate on the human future."
human numbers into the debate on the human future
Better than arabic numbers in the debate on the Arabic future I guess.
You outta be worried. I just read this deep think piece over at The Atlantic:
https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/07/double-pandemic-covid-flu/614152/
They're starting to lose the public support for the "crying in the fetal position and shitting your pants while holed up in a lead lined safe" strategy. Cue the double pandemic!!!
Cue the double pandemic!!!
Double-secret pandemic. Keep them guessing about what you are reacting to.
Was this just sent out after the revelation that the testing centers in Florida had nearly all 100% positive testing results?
Someone massively fucked up there and inadvertently revealed the scam. Now we not only can't take the case number reports seriously, we can't even take the fatality figures seriously because we don't know for sure if it was the BatCoof that killed them.
I was really expecting this story to be in the roundup this am. Haha!
Thats why we need open borders, to bring in a brown skinned working class to fund the ponzi scheme paying white retirees.
Totally stable.

Trump should be tweeting this stuff, as well as the Florida COVID, um, false news.
"WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of laid-off workers seeking unemployment benefits remained stuck at 1.3 million last week, an historically high level that indicates many companies are still cutting jobs as the viral outbreak intensifies."
----ENB's link.
The historically high level is 6.9 million as stated in the WSJ article I linked.
It doesn't matter what Trump tweets. The news media is out to get him. Discrediting the news media outlets that cover him may be the best we can do. And they should be discredited anyway. They're full of shit.
1.3 million last week, an historically high level... The historically high level is 6.9 million
They were only off by a factor of 5. Isn't that an improvement over COVID projections? The media gets better every day 🙂
"The historically high level is 6.9 million as stated in the WSJ article I linked."
Can't check for my self as the article is paywalled.
Look for another source!
The numbers reported by the Labor department are the same everywhere.
1. I wouldn't call March 2020 historical.
2. Prior to 2020, there is nothing over 700,000 going all the way back to 1967. In genuinely HISTORICAL terms 1.3 million initial claims in one week is still a high.
Sure, if you decide certain parts of history don't count.
Hi, Tulpa.
So dont even pretend to understand why we normalize data any more?
Remember when Surgisphere was backing all of those studies presented proving HCQ was killing people (including Bailey at Reason)?
Well some European academics decided to go look at data like the CFR percentages in countries who banned HCQ in response to the now retracted Lancet study and found something very interesting...
https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/stacey-lennox/2020/07/15/media-should-do-a-mea-culpa-as-french-analysis-offers-a-stunning-observation-about-hydroxychloroquine-use-n643181
That 3 week (slightly delayed period) where HCQ was essentially banned saw a huge spike in the CFR.
Hush, Jesse! Don't want to give Trump a boost in the polls!
It probably has more to do with cheap generic vs well funded and expensive new development. The former isnt' going to pay a lobbyist salary.
The bleach! Don't forget that Trump mandated bleach transfusions!
How about the flutes? Oh, that wasn't Trump, huh?
I’m pretty sure Bailey blogger about them, not “backed” them.
Hey everyone we've got another asshole who thinks he can tell us what we read.
I also find it telling that he was covering studies that didn’t show it worked on a regular basis for awhile. Now in the last couple weeks or so we’ve got the Henry Ford Hospital study and the study from India both showing positive results and he no longer seems interested in the subject.
Yeah his silence on the turnabout in scientific thinking is telling.
Hi, Tulpa!
Everyone knew it was Tulpa because he didn’t defend Ron’s disingenuous coverage of the issue like you would.
I don't know if you realize this, but you appoint yourself as the spokesman for "everyone" a lot. Like, a lot.
He defended the study in the comments sarcasmic.
You shut up or I'm snitching to Reason!
You are just upset, Tulpa, because the admins have agreed to fix exploits that you have been using to spoof handles. (Like you are doing here, “ sarcasmic”.)
More like he defended himself when personally attacked. His reporting on COVID-19 related studies invariably include a statement like, “if this study’s results hold up, this is good/bad news”.

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that the celebs have been hacked again.
A juicy implication is that if their accounts were compromised down to the admin level, it's likely their DMs were too. And despite 20 plus years of employment litigation that should have taught everyone otherwise by now, people still write all sorts of things electronically that they wouldn't dare say in front of a camera.
And this Twitter admin blew his wad on a bitcoin grab instead of an embarrassing DM dump?
Or better yet embarrassing pic...(checks list of the hacked)..never mind.

Are you implying that preventing your body from expelling the virus by rebreathing the same air over and over is NOT medically sound advice? What credentials can you bloviate about to substantiate such an outrageous claim? I bet that even if you do have a credential, it doesn't have 'Zuckerberg' in the middle of it.
On top of it it seems wearing a mask makes you take in less but also removes more when you breathe who’d of though cloth was this hi tech. From the la time article. “ And even if a person wearing a mask gets infected, the mask — by filtering out most of the viral particles exhaled by the infected person — probably leads to less severe disease, Gandhi said.“
Masks and googles improve outcomes for peaceful protestors who get shot in the face with teargas canisters.

I would be most happy if COVID lethality were directly related to a person's fear of COVID lethality.
Hmm. I'll bet a clever person could cite a study to that effect.
if COVID lethality were directly related to a person’s fear of COVID lethality.
COVID Hysteria Related Induced Self-Termination. So named because it would also be irrefutable proof of a kind and loving deity.
When Jonas Salk got paralyzed, I'll admit that was good irony.
Way to misuse irony, Alannis.
I'm not convinced that there isn't some connection between psychological fear of the pandemic and bad outcomes. I was reading a story today about a couple from my area (now living in TN) who were the kind of people who "took it very seriously, wore gloves and masks from the start" and in June both ended up getting it. She got pneumonia but didn't require hospitalization, he was in the ICU and damn near died. That's not the first story I've heard like that either, as well as hearing a fair share from people who were never that worried about it and ended up having a very mild or asymptomatic case. Now stories are just that- stories- and there are definitely other factors that can bias reporting when you are relying on "what you hear." People are probably much more likely to broadcast their experiences when they reinforce preconceived notions, for example. So there's probably nothing there, but could make an interesting research project for someone.

the CARES Act only provides $13.5 billion to help schools make safety changes, not the $245 billion that the Council of Chief State School Officers requested.
WTF?! How much do masks cost these days?!
It costs approximately $0 to make schools covid safe for kids.
And approximately $3T to make schools covid safe for the "adults".
There are no adults at a school; just government workers and students.

Imperial College learns the cost of lockdowns.

Is there anything that COVID cannot do?
Get Joe Biden elected?
It’s trying like hell.
Open up the states so people can go back to work?
I wish people would stop talking like this. COVID will not kill those people. Retarded reactions to COVID will kill those people.

Smithsonian Goes Full Marxist: Nuclear Family, Science, Christianity All Part of Oppressive 'Whiteness'
https://pjmedia.com/culture/tyler-o-neil/2020/07/15/smithsonian-goes-full-marxist-nuclear-family-science-christianity-all-part-of-oppressive-whiteness-n645176
I'm not fully white. I like women with dark hair and food with flavor.
The graphic the African-American Museum published in association with the exhibition, is absolutely hilarious. As the linked headline notes, it reads like a white supremacist wrote it.: https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/the-national-museum-of-african-american-history-and-culture-goes-full-white-supremacist
I had a link to just the graphic, but the Tweet is was embedded in is no longer on Twitter. Shocking.
"Cause and effect relationships" characterize White Culture?
Oh, FFS!
Yeah, can't imagine why the "black community" remains so dysfunctional after 50 years of "mo money fo dem programs".
Yes, all woke people must renounce Whiteness and all associated evils!
So besides hard work, the nuclear family, and quantitative logic, that means giving up unimportant things like:
metal
pants
all things digital
clocks
math
Oh, and democracy.
Engaging in business.
No self-respecting person does that; they work for the government!
As long as they can have masks, they're happy. No one can be truly woke without a mask. Pants are optional.
It's summer and I am under house arrest. I don't need pants.
So these leftists are now saying that blacks are inferior, while other leftists are now saying that jews are evil. Things sure have changed in the last hundred years.
Have they really? Seems straight out of the progressive textbook dating back to at least Wilson.
From the Smithsonian Whiteness Page Poster:
https://nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race/topics/whiteness
Whiteness means Rugged Individualism such as self-reliance.
It means Family Structure such as father, mother and 2.3 children.
It means emphasis on Scientific Method.
It means Protestant Work Ethic such as, ummm, hard work.
It means Future Orientation such as, well . . . plan for the future.
It means Competition such as such doing something about a situation and decision making.
It means Communication such as written tradition.
There is more that sounds like the writer watches a lot of TV and just generalizes, which used to be bad but is now good?
What do non-whites actually think of this? Do they think whites are wrong to use scientific methods and that a family with a father and mother and children is wrong and oppressive? Or do they feel less equal because only whites think these things are important?
I assume these are important to most people regardless of color but the poster makes it seem it's only important to whites.
It's astonishing to think that the KKK thought more of black people than woke progressives.
I'm white.
Does that mean I don't get any reparations?

The same pols and pundits who not long ago were waving the flag for wars and insisting that American-style democracy was so perfectly realized that it made sense to bring it to all the peoples of the world, by force if needed (think Friedman’s hypothesis of a borderless utopia of forced wealth creation called the Golden Straitjacket), have now reversed course to tell us our entire history needs to be wiped clean.
It's almost like these globalists have no actual goal other than manipulating Western society to line their own pockets, socio-economic consequences be damned.

Chump change. How much did the NBA get?
They still don't have Daryl Morey's scalp, which is absolutely amazing. Cost Fertitta a God-only-knows amount of money too. The only reason I can see why the overleveraged, low-rent version of Trump even bought the team, was so he could stick a Rainforest Cafe in every city in China, and a giant Golden Nugget in Macao.
Good luck with those dreams now.
I think you may be comparing whole sale vs. yearly rate.
Oh, and since no one around here is writing about foreign policy anymore (or when they do, they seem to be completely oblivious to the facts), someone should pipe up about the progress the Trump administration is making in getting us out of Afghanistan.
“The Defense Department announced Tuesday that U.S. troops have withdrawn from five military bases and reduced the size of its forces in Afghanistan as part of the agreement reached with the Taliban in February.”
----The Hill
July 14, 2020
https://thehill.com/policy/507378-pentagon-us-has-withdrawn-from-5-bases-in-afghanistan-after-taliban-agreement
Yes, President Trump's peace deal with the Taliban continues to go forward and according to schedule in the peace deal he negotiated, and if President Trump is reelected, we should expect to see the U.S. completely out of Afghanistan--no later than nine months from now.
Certainly, President Trump didn't withdraw from five military bases as scheduled and withhold aid from the U.S. backed Afghanistan government when they were dragging their feet on their agreement to release Taliban prisoners--because he doesn't intend to leave Afghanistan as planned.
P.S. Joe Biden would never have negotiated anything with the Taliban for any reason. If Biden left Afghanistan, it would be without a plan negotiated with the Taliban, and he'd be more likely to stay than do what's in the best interests of the United States for fear of the criticism if things went badly after the U.S. withdrew.
Biden's nuts are the size of raisins.
Biden's nuts are so small.
How small are they?
Biden's nuts are so small that even if you know their momentum from initial conditions, it is fundamentally impossible to know their position with certainty.
And the mask drops.
What mask?
I maintain that as the Democrats become increasingly authoritarian and socialist, libertarian capitalists should become increasingly Republican.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duverger%27s_law
I maintain that the Democrats right now are offering a greater threat to capitalism than I've seen in my life in the form of The Green New Deal and Medicare for All.
When you add in their open hostility to an open society and free thought?
Premise 1: Progressives don't believe anyone should be allowed to hold positions of authority or influence in either the public sector or the private sector if they are racist, misogynist, xenophobic, or homophobic.
Premise 2: Progressives hold that opposition to affirmative action and reparations is racist, that opposition to abortion is misogynistic, that support for a wall along our southern border is xenophobic, and that opposition to gay marriage is homophobic.
Conclusion: Because almost every Republican and independent is sympathetic to at least one of those views, progressives are openly working to purge their opponents from every position of influence or authority in both the public and the private sector.
Given all of that, I think it's imperative for libertarians to vote for Donald Trump in 2020.
There ain't no mask.
. . . especially if we're talking about something like Trump getting us out of Afghanistan. Who else would have done that?
You do realize, Ken, that Republicans are becoming increasingly authoritarian themselves, right? They openly scoff at libertarian ideas that they previously embraced, like free trade, or even free speech (look what Trump wants to do to flag burners). They are increasingly xenophobic as it becomes clear that their opposition to illegal immigration was part of a wider strategy of opposition to immigration generally. They have utterly abandoned any pretense of fiscal responsibility or entitlement reform. And you want libertarians to endorse that?
The problem Ken is that you are afraid of the big bad socialist monsters so you are willing to run to Daddy Trump to save you from the monsters. That's the problem - you are letting fear drive your vote. That is giving in to the demagoguery of Team Red. Don't let fear guide your decision-making. Stand on what you believe and refuse to endorse crappy ideas just because you think they are slightly less crappy than the even crappier ideas of someone else.
"You do realize..
that Republicans"
I'll tell you, whoever took over the chemjeff account and made it go full proggy whine machine is doing a bang up job
Team Red and Team Blue have set up the rules of a game that is causing this country to spiral downward in divisiveness and stupidity. Some of the rules of the game are:
- You have to vote for the Team Blue or Team Red candidate. If you vote for anyone else, you are "wasting your vote."
- You have to pick the side that you think is the lesser of two evils, because the other team is more evil.
- Your only two choices for President will be awful, but you have to vote for one of them.
The American people have to recognize that this is a stupid game with stupid rules, and reject it.
– Your only two choices for President will be awful, but you have to vote for one of them.
Except you don't only get two choices for President.
You get LOTS of choices.
But very few parties want to do the work of holding all kinds of tiny offices to show that their policies actually work.
No, except for Democrats, Republicans, and sometimes Libertarians, the rest of the parties simply want to be handed the job of president without showing that their ideas can do a damned thing.
Even in the plethora party Euro systems the parties have to show they can actually do what they say before they get a chance at the big chair.
The American people can see the actual structure of how the parties work--it's only the perpetual losers who cry foul...and then go back to playing the game half-assed and expecting to win.
If demonstrating success of your party's policy had anything to do with their ability to win offices, both the R's and the D's would have been chased out of town decades ago. Both major parties are shameless masters of self-congratulatory and other-demonizing propaganda. They win because they don't care if they promise the moon with zero intent or ability to follow through. They win because concern about looking like a hypocrite doesn't even register in their top 500 priorities. They win because they each have media networks that run 24/7 telling people that to even consider the idea that you would think differently than how they tell you to makes you a communist/fascist.
Proving your party's policies work has nothing to do with any of it.
They also win because they have had control of districting and election laws for decades.
True. It wasn't meant to be an exhaustive list.
I'm not just talking about third-parties, but also about non-partisanship and independence. Not supporting a party, or even the concept of parties, at all.
"The problem Ken is that you are afraid of the big bad socialist monsters so you are willing to run to Daddy Trump to save you from the monsters."
This is stupid.

----NPR

The idea that keeping Trump in office to veto the Green New Deal and so that Biden can't implement it is entirely reasonable--and your objections to that logic are stupid.
chemjeff really is an ignorant fuck.
Why would you say something like that after Biden revealed his version of the Green New Deal?
The most obvious answer is because chemjeff didn't know anything about it.
Nothing he says appears to be grounded in any facts. He's just emoting. He's telling us how he feels about Republicans--as if that should matter!
Ken, you are the one cowering in fear and letting fear and emotion drive your decision-making.
I fully reject the politics of fear. No longer. Both sides are going to try to scare you into voting for them with demagogic appeals. The cycle of demagoguery has got to stop and it will end when individual stand up and say enough is enough. You are still trapped in the cycle of demagoguery and that is sad to see.
You seem obsessively scared about the GND. I agree that it is overall a bad idea. But it is just ONE bad idea among a whole host of terrible ideas that both Team Blue and Team Red are separately supporting. You are playing up fear about GND and completely ignoring all of the other crap that Team Red would inflict upon is. Trump literally wants to send flag-burners to prison. Is that something libertarians should endorse? Trump wants to continue his destructive trade wars. Should libertarians endorse that? Trump wants to continue his xenophobic immigration policies. Should libertarians endorse that? Trump wants to inject greater government control over free speech on the Internet. Should libertarians endorse that? The GND is a bad idea but it is just one bad idea and you are letting your irrational fear of that, above all others, to persuade people to stampede into the arms of Daddy Trump who will save you from the scary monsters.
I suggest, don't vote based on fear, vote based on what you believe in. If you really believe in Trump's vision of a xenophobic American autarky then knock yourself out and vote for him. But if you don't, then stop lying to yourself that voting for Trump is somehow a principled act. It is not, is a fear-driven emotional reaction. Vote for what you believe in, not based on fear.
Was there a fact in there somewhere, or are you just telling us about your feelings again?
I added up all the minor annoyances Jeff dredged up and it still doesn't approach the GND.
For once I agree with you, Tony.
Here is a fact, Ken:
Ken, you are the one cowering in fear and letting fear and emotion drive your decision-making.
No just you emoting again Jeff.
Shorter chemjeff: "sure the GND would destroy the economy and the country, but Trump is an evil meany-pants!"
If you really believe the GND would "destroy the economy and the country" then you've already bought into the demagoguery and the fear-mongering. Kinda like how Democrats said "Trump would start WW3".
We already have environmental regulations. They aren't "destroying the economy and the country". They have a lot of harmful effects (and a few beneficial ones) but they are not this horrible nation-destroying calamity. The GND is more of the same.
Piling and unprecedented anout of harmful effects, far more than ever before, won't destroy the country.
You just said that.
Lol. Lying Jeffy thinks that criticizing the Democrats stated policy goals is giving in to Republic fear mongering.
Ken is going beyond pointing to the problems with the Democrats' stated policy goals. The going beyond bit is where he concludes, therefore you must vote for the Republicans.
You reject the politics of fear? After crying about ww3 over a certain iranian general? Over forced mask usage because you are fat? Over support of paternalism in the form of welfare because someday your employer might realize how dumb you are?
You love in fear.
You support no policies that require individualism especially if said policies require responsibility.
Wow, an entire post of lies.
You love in fear?
I don’t see how you can say that espousing an opinion on why it is more logical to vote Republican given the rank idiocy the Democrats are putting forward is fear.
One could at least attempt to make the argument that whatever idiocy the Republicans put forward is roundly beat into submission in the court of public opinion, if not the actual courts themselves.

I assumed you were more of an authority on Trump's
You don't have to ask to find out if someone suffers from TDS. Like all fundamentalists, they'll tell you regardless of the subject being discussed.
They wake up in the morning obsessed with their hatred of the man and go to bed at night just the same.

SQRSLY's copy and paste replies are longer.
You have my sympathies.
Ken is many things, most of them extremely wordy. A nuthanger for Trump isn't one of them. Trump was great for the economy and unemployment in general. Why wouldn't a capitalist be in favor of the guy getting another term? Especially when the competition is a senile man, who has been in Washington longer than many of us have been alive, and who never saw a government program he didn't want to expand?
No, Ken totally isn't a shill for Trump. He is just finding every excuse to vote for him and to do the Trump campaign's bidding. But no no no he's a totally independent thinker.
The amount of cope in this response is hilarious.
He is just finding every excuse to vote for him
Biden is the reason to vote for Trump. No matter how much you bloviate, the choice at this time is binary.
Huh. So only two choices then. Who knew.
https://www.lp.org/
Everybody but you knows. 3rd party candidates may act as spoilers, but they will not get elected this cycle. Unless one of them dies, the choice will be Biden or Trump. They are both liars and manipulators guilty of abusing their authority, but one is on record as an enemy of capitalism, a purveyor of social justice, and an advocate of socialized medicine.
So, Americans just keep playing the lesser of two evils, and keep passively accepting that as their reality. It will eventually destroy the country.
So, Americans just keep playing the lesser of two evils
If you want to argue voting for the greater of two evils, I am willing to engage, but pretending there is a viable 3rd party this close to the election is pointless. Sounds like 'Ye didn't want to deal with the paperwork.
"It is not enough to be passively not racist, we must be actively anti-racist.
#BlackLivesMatter #VoteGold"
Jeff still doesn't understand Critical Theory or why it is bad. He doesn't understand that the LP candidate was ratioed for her support of anti-racism, which is critical theory.
Jorgensen is openly woke.

No Chuck...I'm with her!

Was it the "Black Lives Matter" not 'BlackLivesMatter' backpedaling that swayed you, XY? Dr. Jorgensen is likely a nice person, but is an even worse candidate than Gary Johnson.
Vote for who ever you want. Your individual vote is likely meaningless anyway. Jo ain't winning, but if it makes you feel better about yourself to vote for her anyway, go ahead. There won't be a more Liberty-friendly outcome from Biden winning instead of Trump though.
Trump can win NJ
Hop aboard
Talk to me after Labor Day...we'll see where The Donald stands.
The choice is never binary. If Americans stopped voting for either of the two pathetic choices they are given in every Presidential election, the major parties would notice.
Did this just occur to you? Because I voted for Ross Perot twice, who got 19% of the votes and 0 electors. As a matter of fact, the last 3rd party candidate to earn electors was George Wallace. No shit!
Not acknowledging that you are a sheep participating in the Red vs. Blue Team game is hiding your head in the sand and ignoring reality.
The first step in anything changing in this country, and getting out of the downward spiral of divisiveness and poor government, is recognizing the very real manipulation that is the Red vs. Blue game.
Just like the biggest factor in the fall of the Soviet Union was that people stopped believing in it.
Chuck and White Knight, you're both right. If every one keeps playing Red vs. Blue, we're doomed. However, they have all the propaganda networks and all the "legitimacy" in the eyes of 95% of the electorate. Third parties are simultaneously our only hope and a virtually impossibility. At least we can laugh about it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7NeRiNefO0
is recognizing the very real manipulation that is the Red vs. Blue game.
Why would you even bring that weak sauce to a libertarian forum. The discussion here is not about what we would do if we had a magic wishing genie, it is about the choices we have to make in this moment. Of the two evils available for president, I rely on their actions, not their narrative to determine which is more dangerous.
If you actually want change, be active locally and vote libertarian locally. You would be surprised at how much better life can be when the local authorities are held in check. Just ask anyone fighting with their HOA.
Just like the biggest factor in the fall of the Soviet Union was that people stopped believing in it.
Doubling down on ignorance is not going to make you relevant.
"If"
They won't and livig in a world where you make decisions based on things that will never happen is foolish and silly.
There's nothing wrong with subtracting your vote from the two main parties as a protest. Just be honest that it won't be more than that please.
At some point the idealistic "libertarians" here will realize the world isn't a fantasy version of what they wish it was, but come to the realization the world isn't perfect so living in an idealized state with idealized wants just ends up being pathetic.
So, eat the crap sandwich the major parties have given you. How is that not sheep-like?
Ken has been speaking against trump for the last 3 years, the only thing Ken has said in favor to trump is that he is getting the troops out of Afghanistan.

It took you 3 weeks to do even basic investigative work on BLM to come to a conclusion that they don't have a good forward policy. Yet you probably still support them.
Jeff, you are closer to a Media Matters troll than you are a libertarian.
"...Why wouldn’t a capitalist be in favor of the guy getting another term? Especially when the competition is a senile man, who has been in Washington longer than many of us have been alive, and who never saw a government program he didn’t want to expand?.."
Because psychotics like Leo and Jeff HATE the man! Isn't that enough to prefer a senile POS who has never held a job?
Why do you assume I prefer Biden? Spoiler alert, I don't.
"Why do you assume I prefer Biden? Spoiler alert, I don’t."
Strange, I didn't say you did. I simply pointed out you're driven bu your obsessive hatred.
Pathetic...
In fairness, leo isn't a psychotic.
He's just reflexively left leaning, naive, and likes being "edgy"
So he is an idealist?
I despise Trump. I hope he loses badly in November. He is a narcissistic clown who does not know the first thing about true leadership. The world revolves around him, he doesn't give a shit about any issue in any meaningful way, he succeeds via demagoguery and scapegoating and despicable tactics. I hope he leaves office in humiliation and shame and is never heard from again.
I think not only would Biden be a better president than Trump, but a random sample of individuals selected from the phone book would be better presidents than Trump.
That being said I'm not voting for Biden because he does not meet my minimum standard for someone I feel comfortable voting for. He's copied the same destructive trade policies from Trump, he isn't going to do anything about the war on drugs or the surveillance state or the huge debt. At best he would just get rid of the chaos which has been the past four years. Which is a benefit no doubt, but not enough of a one for me to justify selecting him.
Yes we are aware that you have strong personal feelings that you use to justify any anti-trump position.
This is how you ended up on the side of "The Scientific Method is racist" and "Trans men are biologically men"
I see it a little differently. Biden is doddering and senile, but he has two advantages over Trump: he's not a sociopath, and even though he is doddering and senile, he will actually listen to his advisors and not act impulsively on everything.
Having said that, I'm not voting for either one. First, because, as I've written above, I refuse to participate in the Team Red vs. Team Blue game. Second, it's a foregone conclusion who my state will go to, anyway, so my Presidential vote doesn't matter. I'm probably going to leave the Presidential checkmark blank.
All those black kids in jail for Biden's carreer disagree.
I refuse to participate in the Team Red vs. Team Blue game.
LOL. This is all you do. Every argument you have is a dismissal as someone being on a different team. You're literally just a goth on this board.
Jo Jorgensen gets my vote. Then again, I live in the People's Republic of NJ, which is the bluest of blue states. Brain-Damaged Biden will win NJ (we are fucking hopeless), but it will be without my vote.
So nice to see you embrace the hate!
Just a couple resentful leftists acting like typical resentful leftists while virtue signaling to each other that they're "independent"
The world revolves around him
Says the guy asking everyone to change their behaviors because he is fat.
"Ken is many things, most of them extremely wordy. A nuthanger for Trump isn’t one of them."
Incidentally, Trump's biggest fans around here over the last four years will be happy to tell you that I've opposed President Trump on his trade war with China, with his renegotiation of NAFTA, and with his goals on immigration.
I repeat: Trump was wrong to initiate a trade war with China. Trump was wrong to renegotiate NAFTA. And Trump is wrong to seek less immigration. In fact, every day I've been here for the last four years, I've defended open borders as I understand them.
Despite those flaws, however, we should vote for Trump for the reasons I explained above. Because of Duverger's Law, as the Democrats become more authoritarian and socialist, libertarian capitalists should become more Republican.
Because Trump was wrong on trade and immigration is no reason to let in the reign of Hugo Chavez--especially when Trump was right about so many libertarian and capitalist things, like deregulation, taxes, getting rid of ObamaCare to the extent Congress would allow, pulling us out of the Paris Climate Treaty, reinstating sanctions against Iran, and, yes, negotiating a peace deal with the Taliban to get us out of Afghanistan.
And when 2024 rolls around, you know what the Team Red playbook is going to be? "Those Democrats have lost their minds, they hate America and hate you and want to take away your freedoms! Vote for Team Red if you love America and want to save your liberty!" That is the same fucking story that they tell every election. It is fear-based demagoguery plain and simple. And then there you will be, holding their water and buying into their assumptions and typing a 2,000-word essay on why the demagoguery of Team Red should be believed at face value and we all have to just suck it up one more time and abandon our principles and pull the lever for Team Red. All those libertarian ideas will just have to wait until ... 2028, I suppose?
In 2004 it was "vote for Team Red otherwise the terrorists win".
In 2008 it was "vote for Team Red or the scary black Kenyan Muslim Marxist wins".
In 2012 it was "vote for Team Red or watch as the black Kenyan Muslim Marxist destroys America".
In 2016 it was "vote for Team Red or the Chines and the illegals win".
And in 2020 it was "vote for Team Red or the BLM Marxist radicals win".
It is going to be the same fucking thing every single fucking election. At some point, you should reject their abject fear-based campaigns and realize what they are doing to you: manipulating you based on fear and anxiety. Don't fall for it Ken you are too smart for that.
"buying into their assumptions"
You mean like critical race theory and white fagility?
Jeff thinks it isn't fair to educate yourself. He believes only in informing yourself to what is in Vox headlines.
Congratulations, you boiled nuanced and logically thought out oppositions to the Democrats having control of the government to fucking retarded JournoList talking points.
Because Trump was wrong on trade and immigration is no reason to let in the reign of Hugo Chavez–especially when Trump was right about so many libertarian and capitalist things, like deregulation, taxes, getting rid of ObamaCare to the extent Congress would allow, pulling us out of the Paris Climate Treaty, reinstating sanctions against Iran, and, yes, negotiating a peace deal with the Taliban to get us out of Afghanistan.
Not to mention that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and neither Putin nor KJI represent an existential threat to liberty and the American way of life the way China (even if you don't like the trade deal) and globalism do.
and globalism do
Sorry, "Globalism" not (necessarily) "globalism".
Everything tump does benefits Russia somehow, even when it pisses them off.
I am sorry Trump actually getting out of Afghanistan gives you so much butt hurt. I am even more sorry for the pleasure you misery and bitterness over him doing something you support gives me.
I said in the thread yesterday that I believed Trump's foreign policy is generally more praiseworthy than worthy of criticism. I cited Afghanistan as the prime example of why that's my belief.
That doesn't mean I'm not going to take the opportunity to get a poke in at Ken when he leaves himself open like this.
"...That doesn’t mean I’m not going to take the opportunity to get a poke in at Ken when he leaves himself open like this."

"I assumed you were more of an authority on Trump’s"
I maintain that negotiating a peace deal with a terrorist organization is politically risky, and it would have been in Trump's best interests to just kick the can down the road like Obama did.
If you don't negotiate a deal with the terrorists, you can't be made to look like an idiot when they ignore your deal and engage in anti-American terrorism anyway.
There are a couple of reasonable explanations for why Trump took that political risk. Of the leading contenders there's: 1) Trump is stupid and 2) He was doing what he thought was best for the United States.
I also think that President Trump has giant, balloon sized balls. He thinks he can risk doing what's in the best interests of the United States because he has an inflated ego, and he assumes that everyone will love him for being Trump even if things don't go well.
I maintain that Joe Biden doesn't have those kinds of balls, and in this case, not having balls would have meant the U.S. staying in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. We're getting out of Afghanistan because of President Trump's big, giant balls, and if Biden were president, his tiny little raisin nuts wouldn't have gotten us anywhere.
Hillary Clinton's ovaries, by the way, are gigantic. She'd have doubled down in Afghanistan for the win. Biden is a pushover compared to Hillary.
Can you get bone sours in your balls? That might explain the size of Trump's.
Dammit. Bone spurs.
The Left's never gonna rezpect you, leo

If that isn't delusional, it'll do until something better comes along.

As we learn more about how varying viral loads affect COVID-19 transmission and the severity of COVID-19 symptoms, it's becoming clearer that masks protects the wearer, not just those around them.
Well if it's a selfish activity now then yes, I will gladly do it.
WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER!
I did a 2 hour presentation last week while being forced to wear a mask. It is miserable. This is why I hate histrionic liberals and the weak willed GOP who cater to them like my Governor.
"Sorry, I'm drooling uncontrollably. Next time I'll wear a dark mask."
Saran-wrap
LOL
Or hardware cloth.
Mask guidelines updated to require one way bypass valve going INWARD- masks are to protect others, not yourself you selfish Kulak.
Twitter reveals that its own employee tools contributed to unprecedented hack

Internal Tools is a great descriptor of these people.
Biden now beats Trump by 15 points in a national poll
Honest to God, I can't see how Trump wins this.
-me in 2016
The polls are still polling registered voters, not likely voters. I'm presuming every poll is biased towards Team Blue until the likely voter polls start coming out, but that probably won't be until after Labor Day.
That study that says masks protect everyone from viruses sure seems awfully convenient. There must have been other contradictory studies that led to previous The Science that masks don't do much for viruses. What changed?
Just for the record, these are real 'masks' in a clinical setting, NOT "cloth face coverings" of the type mandated by fascists everywhere.
And the CDC still does not recommend "cloth face coverings" for ANYTHING EXCEPT the Communist Chinese Virus. And science still cannot explain how that virus alone is prevented by "cloth face coverings" while all other diseases in the world do not require shutting down an economy or fascist edicts.
Welcome to the revolution.
More of a devolution.
100 years ago masks didn't stop the Spanish Flu. This research paper shows that:

Few books about race have more openly infantilized Black people than this supposedly authoritative tome.
McWhorter needs to get out more.
Does the library still have Little Black Sambo?
A new lawsuit alleges that "with weapons drawn, Louisville Metro Police SWAT officers raided a home last July to serve a warrant on an alleged drug suspect, but instead, they handcuffed a man hired to paint the vacant house, his girlfriend and her 10-year-old daughter..."
THEY WERE ACTING IN GOOD FAITH
"For instance, sociologist Jessica Calarco complains in a New York Times piece aimed at DeVos that the CARES Act only provides $13.5 billion to help schools make safety changes, not the $245 billion that the Council of Chief State School Officers requested. "
Trick question: how much money do public schools (or any other public initiative) deserve?
Correct answer: at least all of it. Anything less is evil, patriarchal, greedy capitalism.
Parler, the Twitter-alternative currently trendy among Republican politicians, is "facing the same evolution that bigger social media companies have confronted for years—balancing free expression with creating safe and inviting online communities."
Just wait until the president migrates over there.
The 2nd Circuit just revived a defamation suit against new MSNBC host Joy Reid and decided that anti-SLAPP doesn't apply in federal court.
Don't they know she was hacked into amplifying that defamation? Also, the woman she falsely accused is probably still a secret racist.
Also the circuit judges were probably all gay.
The governor of Oklahoma has COVID-19.
Which means the whole state now has herd immunity.

There are a lot of good prayers in the Old Testament.
Ethiopia is 'siphoning off the Nile': Sudan accuses Addis Ababa of taking 90MILLION cubic metres of water a day from river and Egypt demands answers over massive dam as reservoir grows
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8529291/Egypt-demands-know-Ethiopia-deliberately-filling-3bn-dam.html
Water wars are a giant reason why a lot of the Third World does what it does. Turkey, with its Southeastern Anatolia Project, Syria (pre-Civil War) threatening to dam up and impound a large chunk of the Euphrates, Turkey doing similar with the Tigris: not surprising Sudan wants to get in the game with the Nile.
With desertification in the Sahel, expect to see some of this starting with the sources of the mighty rivers of West Africa too. Or mountain kingdoms in the Himalayas doing the same with the Ganges and Brahmaputra. Etc...
In my neck of the woods, around the upper great lakes, 10 years ago it was OMG THE LAKES ARE DRYING UP! And they were hella low at the time, for sure. There were lots of theories about why this simply couldn't be due to the natural cycle of things and was different this time- most involving climate change (shocker!). However, some of the more colorful theories in certain circles involved secret underground pipelines to California, or even the southwest states sneaking our water out under cover of darkness via tanker truck or train (never bothered to figure out how many tanker trucks it would take to move the 50 million-odd acre-feet of water that disappeared from Lake Michigan alone).
Now we have high water levels never seen before- houses that were 50 yards from water a decade ago have it literally lapping at the back door. People that built things then assuming it would never come back close to what it was are probably second guessing that decision. Of course this can't be natural- it's different this time, because climate change of course. However, if the other theory was correct, and you guys in LA still have that pipeline, would you mind cracking the tap open a bit? We'd appreciate it.
It's always happy hour somewhere.
If you had only read Reason over the past few years, you might never have known that President Trump inked a peace deal with the Taliban five months ago, that he negotiated safe third country agreements with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, . . .
It's not that issues like these are necessarily being misrepresented by staff here. It's more like they're not even acknowledged. I'm not sure the people who work here and write about theses issues even know they happened. And that isn't letting them off the hook.
What's worse, having a biased view of the facts or being so biased that you're not even aware that the pertinent facts exist?
Peace deal with the Taliban--what are you talking about?!
https://reason.com/2020/02/21/trump-administration-says-its-ready-to-sign-peace-deal-with-the-taliban-by-the-end-of-the-month/
So there was a mention of it!
Wow.
And yet they wrote an article with the headline, "Trump's Failed Promise To Stop America's 'Endless Wars" yesterday anyway.
Not impressed.
But you might have heard about it if you read the site everyday and remembered it.
Were there any other mentions or was that the only one? Because ending the Afghanistan War and pulling out completely is kind of a big deal to libertarians.
I know, right? Why doesn't Reason lick Trump's boots some more? The nerve!
"UH NO, RITE?"
Your complaining will help for sure.
Honestly, Trump's biggest mistake here is in not calling Congress' bluff after Crow and Cheney put in that amendment to the NDAA to limit his ability to withdraw troops, and basically telling them, "Fuck you, we've been there for close to 20 years now, it's time to get the fuck out. They're coming home before November whether you like it or not."
I wouldn't be surprised if the story on the Russian bounties was actually just a CIA gayop to incentivize Congress to stop the pullout. The last thing the glowies want is an end to their 40-year reindeer games over there.
There was that one quote, I think it was in the “Trump’s Failed Promise To Stop America’s ‘Endless Wars” yesterday that Ken talks about, or maybe I saw it on Twitter: can't remember the exact wording, but it was to the effect that Trump's anti-war commitment, like all his other commitments to any principle, is shallow.
Considering the limpout that happened after he pulled troops out of Syria, it wouldn't surprise me.
The press won't acknowledge any of this, and the standard line here at Reason is that Trump is a warmonger.
They either need to be completely ignorant of the facts or willfully obtuse to think that Trump is a warmonger--relative to any other leader in the conversation.
In order for them to call out Crow and Cheney, they'd need to acknowledge that Trump isn't a warmonger, so that story doesn't get noticed.
Sorry. Vote Trump out of office, and then maybe we can start worrying about kicking the real warmongers out of power again. I guess that's the heart of TDS. When they don't give a shit about the facts or the issues anymore--they only care about getting rid of Trump--then they have TDS.
I think you have a valid criticism. They should write about foreign policy more.
On the other hand, of course, nobody should be reading only Reason.
"They should write about foreign policy more."
More articles from Bonnie what's her name, and that laugher yesterday? No thanks. Bring back Michael Young, or another foreign policy expert, and we'll talk.
And the only reason i know is because of your postings. its teh commenters that keep me coming back to Reason not Reason itself it lost all credibility a long time ago
If we had furloughed teachers without pay during this whole thing the lockdowns would have been over in april.
If we had waived taxes the lockdowns would have been over in March.
But how would the teacher unions survive???
Ever wonder why to only transaction that REQUIRES at least two 'personal contact actions' is never suspended? All state lotteries require passing over cash, and getting back a piece of paper. And maybe some change.
Yet they are NEVER shut down.
It might make some voters think the states are run by hypocrites, or that the fascist edicts are bullshit.
I suspect if we pass a constitutional amendment requiring lotteries to be the first thing shut down during all 'emergency proclamations', and be the last thing re-opened, there would be damn few emergency proclamations.
sarcasmic, handle spoofing is not fixed. I’m easily spoofing John’s handle as I write this.
If you really have some pull with Reason management, what they need to do is check all handles for obscure Unicode white space characters such as HAIR SPACE. They should also be aware that capital I and lowercase L look alike in the font used on the site.
Tulpa probably has lots of other tricks, but checking characters in handle names would be a good step.
Of course, Reason’s real problem is they are trying to do custom website programming without dedicating adequate resources. They rely too much on squirrels. They should just switch over to Discus or something.
Then we have the issue of comments going into moderation hell only to see Claire going to town with links about how to work from home and make $zillions.
That's Clarie. Puhleeze!
Contact support. They will get back to you. I don't have pull, just a dialog. Create your own. They're cool people.
OK, I’ll try one more time. Previous attempts have yielded no changes.
Took a couple days for me. Be patient.
Alright, well I wrote to them. I'd urge others to do so, too.
Feel free to complain about Tulpa AND The White Knight pulling this spoofing shit. I'd be overjoyed for my White Knight/Tulpa Disciple/whatever-the-hell-other-handle-I've-used persona to go *poof* and go away if Reason admins could get Tulpa under control.
So you're the idiot that got owned.
Yes, I got owned. I'm doing something about it, though.
OK, I gotta say, I got a response right away, and they say they will fix it.
They're cool people.
This is a spoofer. This is not me. I am surprised it took the resident trolls this long to spoof me.
I'm surprised I was one of the first targets.
You weren't.
soul crusher!
LOL. Hi, Tulpa.
By the way, I'm extremely stupid I actually think Tulpa stole my password.
I'm sure you cannot remember everything you've done over the years, Tulpa.
"I’m easily spoofing John’s handle as I write this" was kind of a tip-off that your handle was being spoofed. 🙂
I am surprised it took the resident trolls this long to spoof me.
When the robots take over, your brain goes in a jar and the JFrees, Tonys, and sarcasmics get pureed into a nutritious broth to keep it alive.
This is a problem that needs fixing. If anyone can impersonate anyone then there's no point in having conversations. Pass your ideas to support, and they will pass them to the developers. Please.
"This is a problem that needs fixing..."
Agreed.
If it's not fixed, there's no reason to use handles at all.
I assumed this issue was only for those who switch handles, thus leaving your "normal" handle unprotected. Is that not the case?
It’s not the case. It’s trivially easy to spoof anyone’s handle using white space characters and certain characters looking similar in the font the site uses.
A long time ago, Tulpa once stole my password, but the admins can’t really do anything about that. That was back when I had come back to the site after a long absence and didn’t know how much the atmosphere of the commentariat had degraded.
"Tulpa once stole my password"
This never happened and has never been the MO. It isn't even something that gets attempted.
Didn’t explain that well. I was using a weak password because I was very trusting and thought everyone here was still really cool.
Also, you were wrong.
Keep in mind that the last update not only took away the "preview" function, they didn't even add in an "edit" button, which this has needed for years.
They really need to start diverting some of those KochBux to website development rather than pot, hookers, and fruit sushi for the monthly staff get-togethers.
Or at least share with the commenters. Someone can have my share of fruit sushi.
Robby's heavenly follicles just perked up.
Edit function isn't a great idea. Think about it. You make a comment and someone replies, then you edit your comment. The conversation is now irrelevant. I suppose an edit function for comments that don't have replies yet could make sense, but what if someone replies while the other is editing? Seriously. No edit button.
I do wish they'd bring back preview though. So you can see when you fuck up html or whatever.
I might say "Hey, I really miss living in Colorado because Red Rocks is the best place in the world to see a show!"
You say "Yeah dude, some of my best experiences in life have been there!"
Then I edit my first comment to say "Ever been to my grandmother's dungeon?"
You get the idea.
I do see your point, but considering countless other sites that haven't nuked their comments provide an edit feature, I'd still lean on the side of putting one in. I suspect the reasons for removal of the preview function and persistent lack of an edit button are driven more by financial considerations than the type of scenario you describe, plus there's still the html functions to quote sections of the previous comments.
For some reason, they nuked my account's ability to post html links several months ago, but I'm too lazy to contact them to fix it, and I can just cite the sources in the comment and people can look it up from there.
I like not having edits, but a 30 second window to catch typos would be nice
So then you edit your own comment.
How is my grandmother doing, anyway? Haven't seen her since she died.
She still wishes you weren't a drunk loser.
I might say “Hey, I really miss living in Colorado because Red Rocks is the best place in the world to see a show!”
You say “Yeah dude, some of my best experiences in life have been there!”
Then I edit my first comment to say “Ever been to my grandmother’s dungeon?”
You get the idea.
You like tricking dudes into admitting they've been to your Grandmother's dungeon?
Sarc is doing that progressive move where he thinks he can torpedo a good idea with a moronic concern.
That's why the smart thing to do is save every version of a comment, and when it's edited for the first time, add a link to a page that shows every previous version of a comment.
Disqus should do this but doesn't.
I realize the commentariat is full of people who think their every inane rambling is high art, but you need to get right with reality.
Lots of places let you edit something for a couple of minutes then the function goes away for those occasions when you only see a typo or something after you click submit.
cool idea
You make a comment and someone replies, then you edit your comment. The conversation is now irrelevant.
Irrelevant how?
He thinks people are cataloguing his posts and revisiting them for their wisdom.
That was funny. +1
If anyone can impersonate anyone then there’s no point in having conversations.
People without mental health issues don't have this problem. There are identifiable characteristics of tone and style that are not easily spoofed. Especially if they were to change in the middle of a conversation.
Of course, the autistic have a hard time telling people apart and the bi-polar have a hard time maintaining a consistent voice, so....
Judging by the hatred I've received for things my spoofer said, there's a bunch of autistics in these here comments.
Autists? On a Libertarian-friendly board? Next you'll be noticing there might be some Asperger's sufferers here too.
People without mental health issues don’t have this problem.
Avoid all the anonymous and atonal insanity by adding blue check marks, duh. Problem solved.
>>handle spoofing is not fixed
hilarious. love it.
As a perfect example, Dillinger has a tone and style that is completely consistent and fairly unique - a bro just drinking a beer while cheering on the apocalypse.
Someone spoofing him would either be obvious, or nobody would give a shit because they would have to be as consistently humorous. To spoof Ken Schultz, well, good luck.
If you have been spoofed and people hated it, they probably hated you first.
>>completely consistent and fairly unique
ya. snarky puppy. someone already had the nomer ...
> Now, we're rapidly nearing a period of population decline, scientists say.
Because nookie is hard to get in the Time of COVID-19. I mean seriously. England even outlawed sex between people who don't live together. What's next, Arkansas outlawing sex between people who aren't related?
I understand the area around Bentonville and Fayetteville is very nice.
Also, isn't Eureka Springs, Arkansas like the Castro district of the South?
HOLY EFFING ESS THIS SITE'S COMMENTS ARE OVERRUN BY SPAMMERBOTS RECENTLY
What's the matter, you don't want to make $1,000 an hour working from home?
I assume the work has something to do with a webcam and barnyard animals, but I've never bothered to find out.
Dammit, I was really hoping my comment there was going to net a spam reply.
Happy?
I'm making 50 cents an hour working from home as a leftist troll on Reason but it's better than the alternative, which is putting on a little girl's dress and working on the Biden campaign as one of his "personal assistants" If you are similarly skilled go here twitter.com
This will probably get you autobanned. I made a similar joke post on my original account.
Worth it.
very funny.
Lol
Kirkland?
They fired Kirkland. He was too stupid even for them.
Plus, he is not 'human' in the sense that you and I are, what with him being a jar full of the gall bladders of failed dictators that somehow gained sentience.
Fun fact: Mussolini's gall bladder was thought to have been destroyed when it was surgically removed in 1922. It is considered a modern miracle that it somehow survived to be enshrined in the Kirkland jar.
And he was revived as kuckland
"One of America's favorite advice books of the moment," White Fragility, "is actually a racist tract," writes John McWhorter. "Despite the sincere intentions of its author,
Gonna have to press "X to doubt" on those sincere intentions.
She's a white supremacist who feels guilty about it. That happens a lot with wealthy white progressives.
They don't even have to be wealthy.
Just look at chemjeff
That's been a pathology going back at least 70 years. I was reading about Dag Hammerskold, the UN Secretary-General during the late 1950s, in "Modern Times," and Paul Johnson described him as "guilt personified." He's basically the patron saint of these types, who reflexively side against the West in favor of whatever Third World or critical theory shibboleths are in fashion at the time, irrespective of the real-world impacts of their advocacy.
You can go back even further, the philosopher Russo. His entire thought was all western tradition is bad all non western is good
Nietzsche diagnosis the problem precisely, both the fundamental and the particular.
Rousseau features in quite a few of his analyses
It's not in the e-version, but the Chron print version this morning has a column by a guy whose only subject is racism, every time he's featured. I no longer even read the lede.
Anyhow, this morning, there's a photo of a young (white) woman, tats all over, with the unlikely name of Sydney Chinchilla, who "believes her car tires were slashed because of the BLM poster in the car window".
It couldn't possibly be a result of her being an insufferable Karen!
Or, she's lying her ass off, which is far more likely. These masochists love getting hate hoax points.
Did dalamia teach her how to write the same thing over and over?
So, NBC and the WSJ commissioned a poll about Trump vs. Biden.
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6989473-200356-NBCWSJ-July-Poll-7-15-2020-Release.html
They have Biden ahead by 11 points. So what? Yeah. So what.
There are some interesting bits in there. For instance, 54% of respondents approve of President Trump's handling of the economy.
This is where that stands relative to previous surveys:
October 2017: Approval = 42%
August 2019: Approval = 49%
February 2020: Approval = 53%
July 2020: Approval = 54%
I would never have suspected that tens of millions of Americans could lose their jobs between February and July of 2020, and President Trump's approval of how he handles the economy wouldn't budge an inch. That's incredible.
The dip in Trump's general approval appears to be all about race relations, and Trump is polling poorly with various minorities. Nationally, he remains more popular than Biden with whites, but every other race appears to favor Biden.
Why are white people so racist?!
Regardless, I wouldn't expect race relations to remain the biggest issue through November, and it doesn't really matter if California and New York vote for Biden even more than they did for Hillary Clinton--they only get x number of delegates to the electoral college no matter how high Biden polls in each state. The real question is how swing voters in rust belt swing states vote, and IF IF IF they still approve of the way President Trump is handling the economy in November, that should put him over the top.
And if they still believe in his handling of the economy after all this devastation, then there's no good reason to think they won't grade him even higher on that count as things improve over the coming months.
Trump won by around 1% in WI, MI, and PA. These 3 states alone, if flipped, would have given Hillary the win. What's important is what the poll numbers look like in these states, plus FL and OH which have become modern bellwethers.
Biden seems to play better in the rust belt states listed above. That alone should carry some concern for Trump. If I had to pick between only Trump and Biden, I'd rather Trump wins. I hope he isn't resting on his laurels too much with all the talk of fake polls, etc. That could be as big of a mistake as Hillary made in 2016 in believing the polls.
"Biden seems to play better in the rust belt states listed above."
Show me the numbers.
Are rust belt swing state voters unhappy with Trump because he didn't follow through on his promise to renegotiate NAFTA?
Maybe they're upset because he didn't initiate a trade war with China?
The rust belt hasn't had a President cater to them the way Trump has since there's been a rust belt.
Let me clarify. When I said Biden plays better, I meant better than Hillary. Any numbers I put up would just get dismissed as bias polls. Every poll and betting odds site that I've looked at shows Biden up significantly in WI, MI, and PA. Obama (with Biden on the ticket) happened to win those 3 states.
Politics is all about perception. It doesn't matter if Trump catered to them directly. What matters is how do those swing voters in those states feel the day of the election. If we're still climbing out of the COVID-induced economic melee, that looks bad for all incumbents whether they are responsible or not. I should also probably mention that all 3 of these states have Democrat governors.
You guys might think this thing is a slam dunk, but believe me it's anything but.
but believe me
LOL
The fact is that no one knows what the electorate is actually thinking. And anyone who tells you they do is lying. Accurate polling is expensive and very hard to do. And as you point out, what matters is the state polls. National polls are only meaningful in so far as they give some indication of what the state polls are, which is to say not very much.
The other thing is that most people are not paying any attention to the election right now. So, their answers now really don't mean much. If, for example, Biden is playing well in the rust belt today, I imagine his endorsement of the Green New Deal, will likely have some pretty significant effect on that once people start paying attention and realize what his actual position is.
They don't really have a conception of what Biden is about.
He's hardly raised his head out of his basement for weeks.
The only time he did show up was to announce this:
"Biden Outlines $2 Trillion Climate Plan"
https://www.npr.org/2020/07/14/890814007/biden-outlines-2-trillion-climate-plan
I imagine his endorsement of the Green New Deal, will likely have some pretty significant effect on that once people start paying attention and realize what his actual position is.
I hope that's the case. I really mean it when I say I prefer Trump to Biden. As much as I pick on Trump for spending, immigration, and trade, I don't think Biden will be any better.
If Biden were smart, he would position himself as Obama's 3rd term. Position himself as a stabilizing force in an increasingly unstable America. He might have needed to endorse the GND during the primaries, but he need to find a way to walk back to the middle if he wants to win the general. All it takes for him to win is WI, MI, PA or FL+1.
I agree that is what Biden would do if he were smart. But the batshit crazy wing of the Democratic party are forcing him to run as a batshit crazy Prog.
But if that's all Biden needs to do, that's a problem for Trump. Whether Biden does it or not isn't up to Trump. It will be very hard for Trump to convince voters that Obama's VP isn't trying to be Obama's 3rd term.
My opinion is that Trump has to convince Americans that they are better off because of his policies than they were in 2016. That's going to be hard to do this year. There's almost no way that the economy bounces back fully by November. He seems to be putting his political capital behind supporting law and order and the police. That may play well, may not. I think the areas that are most affected by the rioting aren't going to vote for Trump no matter what (inner-cities).
If you asked me a year ago who would win between Trump and Biden, I would have been 90% on Trump. 2020 has flipped everything on its head. If Trump isn't worried, he should be.
Bingo! = The other thing is that most people are not paying any attention to the election right now.
People don't typically start tuning in until after Labor Day. And just remember, the media crowed ad nauseum for months that Crooked Hillary was a sure thing in 2016.
There's also the confounding factor that, more than any other candidate in recent history (maybe ever), a vote for him is really a vote to put the VP in the line of succession.
I don't think his handlers would let him (he's the demented leader of the crazy party so who knows), but I'm pretty sure that if he picked Whitmer for his VP, he'd pretty much tank his (and her) prospects of winning.
These polls are the groundwork being laid for massive voter fraud.
It's going to be a shit show
He's going to "win" and "succumb to COVID". Anybody who thinks we should recount the ballots or refuse to implement his successor's controls will be worse than all the Klansmen who wanted to lynch Obama on the WH lawn.
The progressive establishment, in a joint venture with neverTrump Republicans, have successfully sown chaos and discord (more than usual) for 4 months now. Initial coronavirus panic, then a change of pace to race riots when that lost steam, then once that started to burn itself out (so to speak) double down on covid and go absolutely batshit insane with the "spike" in cases, completely ignoring the very real and very significant good news that mortality is not even coming close to keeping up with case numbers, among other things. It's nuts, from any sort of objective perspective we should feel pretty OK about where things are and where they are going with covid right now, but instead everyone is losing their mind like it is Lombardy in March all across the nation. Clearly, mask mandates (by both government and private entities) are the latest battle of convenience for progressives- take an issue simmering on the back burner that you know Trump is perceived as being on one side of and blow it up into an inescapable, pick-your-side, nationwide firestorm with one side being the decent, compassionate one which would end all this instantly if you would just get on board, and the other side being Trump's.
As long as they can keep this up, it's not good for Trump. Trump needs some sort of normal environment where he can talk about how well things have gone for many Americans since he took office and point out how awful and incoherent Biden is, especially to rust belt swing state voters. In times of chaos, people tend to want someone leading who is unremarkable and stable which, right or wrong, is more Biden's brand. Trump's leadership, while often surprisingly effective, is pretty chaotic in itself. Which is obviously why anything resembling a return to normalcy is not what progressives want. The question is, can they keep it going for another three months? Or will Americans finally decide they are being played and it's time to be done with this? I think that will be the determining factor here- what this nation looks like around Labor Day.
By any objective measure, what you describe is the greatest evil a government has perpetrated, short of literal extermination, on its own people.
At least in the West.
It's a no-exagerration crime against humanity.
But far too many of you are too scared to admit it, and too naive to contemplate proper responses
In times of chaos, people tend to want someone leading who is unremarkable and stable which, right or wrong, is more Biden’s brand.
Disagree in both dimensions. See W v. Gore and Kerry *and* Obama v. McCain and Romney. Times were chaotic in '00 and certainly in '04 and the more remarkable candidate won. Then in '08 and '12, when times were less chaotic, the eponymous maverick lost.
The Quinipack University Poll lists those polled by party identification as
PARTY IDENTIFICATION
Republican 24%
Democrat 34
Independent 34
Other/DK/NA 7
The polls on the actual party make up of the country show it to be
Republican 29
Democrat 34
Independent 33
And it is 49 Democrat and 44 Republican if you force the independents to say who they lean towards.

Now that is of registered voters not likely voters. Likely voters tilt Republican pretty much every election. But, let's assume it doesn't and that is the actual makeup of those who show up on election day.
The poll under counts Republicans by 20%. So, its results are pretty much worthless. If Biden wasn't ahead in a poll that under counted Republicans by that much, it would be shocking.
The fact that the media continues to treat polls that are that skewed as legitimate reflections of the electorate is irrefutable evidence the entire polling racket is nothing but an attempt to gaslight the public into believing Biden is more popular than he is.
I tend to believe this more: https://electionbettingodds.com/
Not a good look for Trump, although we are a long way from November. That being said, I hope Trump doesn't fall into the same trap as Hillary did in 2016. Flatly denying the polls as illegitimate could be as dangerous for him as believing the polls was for Hillary in 2016.
I have never believed in the betting markets. They are just a reflection of conventional wisdom. There is no reason to believe that there is some kind of collective wisdom in predicting the future. This sort of logic has never been applied to anything else. It certainly doesn't work with regard to sporting events or sports books would have gone out of business long ago.
The only way the betting markets could be said to predict the future is that if they are driven by people with some kind of inside knowledge that no one else has or they are actually reflective of the preferences of the public at large. There is zero evidence anyone has any insider information in those markets. Moreover, if someone did, they would keep it secret and drive the market the other way. Otherwise, they wouldn't make any money. The information is only good if it causes you to win when everyone else is betting for the loser. There is also no reason to believe that the people who bet on those things' preferences are in any way reflective of the public at large. It is just the collective guess of a group of people.
I can see no rational reason why anyone should put any stock in the betting markets. I am dumbfounded that otherwise intelligent people do.
As far as "every poll is bad", no not every one is. But, ones that under sample Republicans by 20% are bad polls. This is a bad poll. If you think it is a good poll, then explain why what I am saying about it is wrong. If you can't, then why is it so hard for you to dismiss it? Do you think all polls are good?
I have never believed in the betting markets. They are just a reflection of conventional wisdom. There is no reason to believe that there is some kind of collective wisdom in predicting the future.
The "wisdom of the crowd" is nothing more than an appeal to popularity. With that said, I'd say the election results are going to hinge more on whether these BLM/Antifa temper tantrums are still going on or not by the time November rolls around, and how many people have remained at work in spite of the scare-mongering to implement a second coof lockdown.
The thinking with betting markets is that it's one thing to say who you are going to vote for (polls) but an entirely different thing to put your money where your mouth is. They aren't perfect, no doubt. But I think they are more informed than polls because of this reason.
There have been numerous studies which support the theory of the wisdom of the crowd, assuming a large sample size of diverse opinions. Of course it's more compelling when there is a right answer to come to, but it shouldn't be discounted in areas of ambiguity. This is exactly the theory of why markets beat central-planning. To me the Stossel/Lott site mimics markets more than anything I've seen in predicting elections, which is why I give it more credence than polls.
If 2016 shows us anything, it's that nothing is a perfect indicator of how an election will go.
The thinking with betting markets is that it’s one thing to say who you are going to vote for (polls) but an entirely different thing to put your money where your mouth is.
And that makes no sense. Think about it. You are saying that the truth of someone's prediction is measured in some degree by the fervency of their belief. So what if you believe in it enough to put your own money down? That doesn't mean you know anything. People lose millions of dollars a year because they fervently believe this or that team is going to win this or that game.
Again, I am dumbfounded how anyone believes this nonsense.
It works on averages. The theory is that for everyone that is completely wrong in one direction, they get balanced by someone in the other direction. It's the mean that you're after. That's how the betting sites that they sample are setting their odds.
It's not that the prediction is more true because people are putting money down, it's that they are more informed when they do it. Again, not a perfect indicator, but to me better than polls.
Except...the betting markets got it totally wrong in 2016.
Everything got it wrong in 2016.
Again, not a perfect indicator, but to me better than polls.
Well with Betfair, I can see that my statement about "setting" odds is inaccurate. Betfair is an exchange, a true betting market. Stossel/Lott then aggregate those bid/ask prices and form a percentage. It would be more accurate to say that Stossel/Lott are doing the averaging, but the fundamental concept is as I described it.
No it isn't.
Those same markets were giving 15:1 odds on Trump winning the Republican nomination in October 2015, while he was leading in the polls/primaries
When betting, there are many different choices other than "bet on the winner"
It certainly doesn’t work with regard to sporting events or sports books would have gone out of business long ago.
Sports books make their money on commission on losing bets (vigorish), not on the bets themselves. They set the odds to hopefully get even action on both sides of the bet to maximize their long-term profits. In fact, they operate on the very principle of wisdom of the crowd, as they are trying to set odds to split the distribution of the crowd right down the center.
This is also wrong.
Oh god you know nothing at all about this.
Please explain how I am wrong.
They set the line to generate maximum not even action, which is their actual goal.
Tony is correct an uneven line that generates more action is desirable above an even line that sees no bets.
"Even" is a convenient result, never the goal. The fact is MOST betting is driven by uneven lines that coerce bettors into thinking they are getting a deal when they aren't.
Well that can't be completely accurate either. Setting a line that completely favored one team over the other would ensure "maximum" action (everyone bets on the sure thing), although at a loss for the book. Why would they want to take that risk?
I'm not in the industry, but everything that I've read on the subject suggests that for maximum, low-risk long-term profit even action is preferred. Sports books aren't gambling. Their users are.
I'm generally curious if you have a source that says they are looking solely for maximum action. I'd be happy to admit if I am wrong.
No, it wouldn't, just the opposite actually, and again you don't understand and dont seem to want to.
That scenario would not guarantee maximum action, because lines exist to mitigate the sure thing. A line is a handicap to make the betting appear even. Please try to understand the terminology because discussing this with you when you don't is difficult. Lines are simply psychology, and they reflect thinking not reality.
I was in the industry. Throw your books away and go talk to someone instead. You have a comprehension problem not an information problem.
My god man. No. Maximum action is preferred. With the appearance of even action while not actually being even. Please try to understand, they move the lines based on giving the appearance of even action not the reality.
You don't really appear to grasp the distinctions that are being explained to you.
Fuck man. I never said "solely for maximum action" please read what I actually wrote. You're obviously more invested in being right than in educating yourself.
This is why you don't tap the glass. I tell people not to but I still do it.
I never said “solely for maximum action” please read what I actually wrote.
I was responding to sock Tony, not sock you. He said, "They set the line to generate maximum not even action, which is their actual goal."
I said "They set the odds to hopefully get even action on both sides" which even you admit is a "convenient result"
By that logic, I never said "solely for even action."
Throw your books away and go talk to someone instead. You have a comprehension problem not an information problem.
That doesn't even make sense. If I didn't have an information problem, how would talking to someone help?
I was in the industry.
Then why not tell us that from the beginning instead of responding with such inspiring posts as "no it's not" and "oh god you know nothing about this." While it appears that maybe we disagree on whether it's a goal or a convenient outcome to get even action, those two positions are hardly enough to say that I know "nothing" about the subject.
If you truly were in the industry, then I trust you're right and what I've read on the subject is wrong. I'm still curious enough about the subject to ask again... do you have a source that agrees with your position? I'd like to read it.
So he didn't say " solely maximum action" either, and you're still arguing. Neat.
It makes perfect sense. You don't understand the terminology and an in person conversation would help you. It is designed to be confusing.
So you WANT me to argue from authority? Ok.
You're completely wrong. I made my living for a decade betting until I was asked to take a position in management of a startup operation.
That's what I am saying , YOUR SOURCES agree with me but because you dont understand the terminilogy you dont realize it.
https://www.safestbettingsites.com/strategy/sportsbooks-make-money
Nothing in this article talks about setting a line for maximum action. They prefer even action (as a simplification), but of course they have to pay attention to the skilled, big money bettors (sharps). I don't see anything in this article which supports your theory of maximum action.
What I see described is a sportsbook setting an initial even action line and moving away from even action if sharps are all on one side of the line.
Considering you don't even use the correct terminolgoy I'm not surprised that you still don't understand.
That's literally what setting the line is guy.
Additionally, ypu're confusing oddsmakera with books.
This is so far beyond you that you should put it down and walk away.
Safe betting sites? Is this a joke?

Off topic:
You read the thread on Mike Postle?
I lost track of it a few months ago.
Need to revisit
First off, I didn't know 2+2 was still alive. Everytime I went back to read, it kept constantly loading but nothing happened.
Second, some of the Postel hands were hilarious to read about. The 54o coldcalling a raise and 3!, then calling a 4-bet ship, followed by a 5-bet ship, was really silly. All preflop, both shippers had AK, and a dude folding to the silliness had KQ. I mean, shoot a flare into the ceiling that you're cheating, why don't you.
There's sun running, and then there's the greedy, retarded crap he was pulling. I think he had something like a literal 1000bb/100 win rate, for a decent period of live play. Not subtle.
polls are as illegitimate as models.

Maybe, the pollsters take this into account when they calculate their margin of error.
https://poll.qu.edu/images/polling/us/us07152020_demos_ulvz33.pdf
This survey uses statistical weighting procedures to account for deviations in the survey
sample from known population characteristics, which helps correct for differential survey
participation and random variation in samples. The overall adult sample is weighted to
recent Census data using a sample balancing procedure to match the demographic makeup of
the population by region, gender, age, education and race. When including the design
effect, the margin of sampling error for this study of registered voters is +/- 3.3
percentage points.
5 What determines the amount of error in survey estimates?
Many poll watchers know that the margin of error for a survey is driven primarily by the sample size. But there are other factors that also affect the variability of estimates. For public opinion polls, a particularly important contributor is weighting. Without adjustment, polls tend to overrepresent people who are easier to reach and underrepresent those types of people who are harder to interview. In order to make their results more representative pollsters weight their data so that it matches the population – usually based on a number of demographic measures. Weighting is a crucial step for avoiding biased results, but it also has the effect of making the margin of error larger. Statisticians call this increase in variability the design effect.

Maybe you should explain why you think the Quinnipiac Poll did not adequately address your concerns in their statistical analysis of their poll. Because you don't like the result?

Notice what is not listed there, party affiliation. They are not weighting the results to account for actual party affiliation of the electorate. How could they? Party affiliation is based on polling as well and changes over time. The things listed there are known and are stable at least over the times that the polls are conducted.
So, nothing you posted refutes my point. You just wasted everyone's time missing the fucking point. So please go away. You are neither smart enough nor honest enough to engage in any kind of adult discussion.
"Despite the sincere intentions of its author, the book diminishes Black people in the name of dignifying us.…Few books about race have more openly infantilized Black people than this supposedly authoritative tome."
Sincere? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it does.

“Police photos of the aftermath showed a lieutenant with a bloodied face, a detective holding a bandage to his head, and a bicycle officer helping a fellow officer dress a head wound. Monahan, who last month kneeled in a show of solidarity with protesters, sustained injuries to his hand,” The Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Terence Monahan, New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Department, was injured Wednesday after protesters demonstrating the death of George Floyd attacked a group of officers on the Brooklyn Bridge, according to law enforcement.
Wow, so all of these right-wing media outlets are highlighting stories depicting BLM protestors behaving badly. It's as if they are pushing a narrative of BE AFRAID OF THE BLACK MARXISTS in order to drive people in fear into the arms of Team Red. They did the same thing in 2016, except instead of the scary Marxists, it was the scary illegals. It is demagoguery pure and simple. It is even more dishonest than the mainstream media. And you continue to serve as their handmaiden by signal boosting their narrative around here.
Just because some brown shirts got out of hand and broke the windows of some Jewish stores doesn't mean every brown shirt if violent.
This is literally what you would have said had you been alive in the late 1930s. All you do is excuse leftist violence. BLM is a violent, racist movement. The fact that not every single person who supports it is violent doesn't make it a peaceful movement. Where there is a BLM protest, there is almost certain to be violence and chaos. Those are the facts. And your lying and excuse making persuades no one.
I don't buy that "BLM is a violent [...] movement."
One problem, I've questioned over and over, is that the articles "right-wing media outlets" (and sometimes it's just posts on Twitter or something like that, so not any kind of formal journalism) seem to play fast and loose with associating this or that violent group of rioters with BLM, although the evidence may be as weak as some of the rioters shouting, "Black lives matter!"
Or take, for example, the Twitter post about the riot at the Dallas restaurant (I think it was called Cafe' Millennium). When I tried to find some other reporting on the incident, all I found about rioting at Cafe' Millennium were stories from May 29th. Which makes me suspect that the Twitter poster was putting up a video taken on May 29th, and trying to pass it off as being shot in July. I might be wrong, but the problem is that the person who posted it on Twitter didn't give any context -- the post doesn't give the same of the restaurant, doesn't say when the incident happened, and doesn't say how he established that the protesters had affiliation with BLM.
I have 26 dead bodies and counting from the BLM riots that say otherwise. You can discount the incident in Dallas but it still occurred. And other incidents like that have occurred. As well as numerous attacks on police including the the ambush and murder of the two officers in Georgia.
That one is very instructive. One of the dead officers' teenage daughter put up a tribute to her father on Instagram. She had to take it down because of the torrent of abuse and threats she received. That is BLM. BLM is just a garbage movement full of garbage, nasty people. That there are some well meaning people who have become useful idiots for it, doesn't change what the majority of its supporters are.
One of the dead officers’ teenage daughter put up a tribute to her father on Instagram. She had to take it down because of the torrent of abuse and threats she received. That is BLM.
Do you have a citation for this story?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8517633/Daughter-Texas-cop-shot-dead-ambush-deletes-tribute-hero-bluelivesmatter-feud.html
COme on Jeff. You were likely one of the people abusing her. You know it was true. Stop lying.
Oh, so there is more detail to the story than what you initially presented. How surprising. She wasn't harassed by people because of her tribute to her father. She was harassed by people because of a hashtag that she chose to use, #bluelivesmatter. And what does BLM have to do with any of it? Was there some official communique from BLM HQ to direct its zombie army of followers to harass this young lady? Or was it individuals who chose to object of their own free will, not to the tribute itself, but to her choice of hashtag?
See there you go, with more of your guilt by association. You don't like BLM and so you are going to attribute any story that is even remotely anti-cop to BLM. That is what I object to, John. You are completely dishonest about this whole thing.
She was harassed by people because of a hashtag that she chose to use, #bluelivesmatter.
Makes the harrassment totes okay.
Which was a tribute to her father, a cop.
And you justified attacking her for it you gruesome little shit.
Hi, Tulpa!
>>She was harassed by people because of a hashtag that she chose to use, #bluelivesmatter.
dude the chick's dad was gunned down. nobody should harass her or defend anyone who does.
So, are we allowed to make a distinction between officially associated with BLM and supporter of BLM?
Oh go fuck yourself, Jeffy. You really think that the vast bulk of the people that get pissed off by that hashtag AREN'T supporters of BLM?
You really think that the vast bulk of the people that get pissed off by that hashtag AREN’T supporters of BLM?
Perhaps you could start by defining what precisely you mean by "supporters of BLM".
If by "supporters of BLM" you mean "violent Marxist terrorists" then no.
If by "supporters of BLM" you mean "support the general idea that Black lives do matter and that racial injustice is a problem in this country but do not necessarily agree with everything that the BLM organization stands for", then sure, probably.
I do not think there was some diktat from BLM HQ which told people to go harass that poor girl. I think there were a lot of people who broadly support the BLM idea who were incensed by the use of that hashtag.
>>“support the general idea that Black lives do matter and that racial injustice is a problem in this country but do not necessarily agree with everything that the BLM organization stands for”
if you're that but decry violent marxists you should be that silently. the other way makes you look like a Pekingese for BLM
Huh, so we're playing the "No True BLM supporter," I see.
No, but the problem is that a lot of really loose definitions and guilt by association has been used around here to advance the narrative that all protestors are violent Marxists.
And if we are going to go with the reason advanced a lot lately that it’s cool to read whatever meaning you want into someone’s silence, then silence on the peaceful protestors’ First Amendment rights to peacefully protest indicates that conservatives here don’t care about such rights.
There are actual right-wing outlets that pull that kind of crap. They will take old stories and recycle them, deceptively presenting them as if they just happened recently, in order to keep up the steady drumbeat of fear that they wish to portray to their readers.
That 8 year old girl who was murdered in Atlanta last month by a BLM mob is just "old news", says the guy who brings up Eric Rudolph every time someone mentions that pro life movement.
Fuck off. You fool no one.
No, I am talking about recycling articles from years ago.
Yes you are because you don't want to talk about the wave of violence and murder that happened this summer.
Says the guy who cites Charlottesville every time a group of his fellow travelers beat and murder someone
Please, Nardz, tell us all again how you would send the state to murder protestors, violent or not
There’s a big difference between bringing up a past event and trying to pass off a past event as happening recently. I’ve seen it done, and I wonder if it’s been done with the Dallas restaurant video tweet.
She was killed by a mob, that is true. What justifies calling them a "BLM mob"?
I mean, apart from their membership in BLM and their signs that say BLM?
Hi, Tulpa!
I'm sure you had the same opinion were this charitable about the Charlottesville guy as well. As always with the left excuse a few bad apples as unrepresentative of a movement and equate one protest with the intent of the entire right wing.
How about we all adopt an individualist standard?
Everyone is solely responsible for his/her own actions. Not those of the guy standing next to them.
No I think I'm fine with if your mob burns things down it's on you too.
Jeff is literally incapable of an individualist perspective.
That's extremely evident in all of his posts attempting to pose as such
Please, Nardz, tell us again about how Pizzagate is real
Didn't we school you on this yesterday?
https://reason.com/2020/07/15/footage-of-partial-blindings-during-anti-police-brutality-protests-contradicts-cops-reports/#comment-8350632
If an arsonist lights your house on fire and my truck is blocking the hydrant, am I somehow absolved of the damage caused by my reckless obstruction of the public right of way? No, there are consequences to me as an individual even though I did not instigate the violence against you.
Continuing to 'protest peacefully' once violence erupts has consequences. Getting labeled 'violent protester' is one of those consequences when by action or inaction, they have enabled the violence.
Hmm, Chuck P.’s silence on the peaceful protestor’s First Amendment right to continue to peacefully protest in spite of some other guy’s violent act says he doesn’t care about the First Amendment.
Chuck P.’s silence on the peaceful protestor’s First Amendment right to continue to peacefully protest in spite of some other guy’s violent act
As always, shifting the goalposts, but not far enough this time. The 1A recognizes the 'right of the people peaceably to assemble', which of course is not possible once violence erupts.
I know. I don't know if the Dallas restaurant is such as case, but I have seen it done before.
It's probably been done by left-wing outlets, too.
Good thing you're having it delivered free of charge.
I expect reasonable people to put current events into proper perspective.
I expect propagandists to blow way out of proportion the events that help their cause and hide all the other news, so as to exaggerate the importance of the narrative that they wish to push.
That is what right-wing media does. Steve Bannon even admitted to such when it came to Breitbart, in 2015-16. They deliberately highlighted every story that depicted illegal immigrants in a negative light so as to give an exaggerated view of the problem of illegal immigration. And so right-wing voters had a skewed view of the problem of illegal immigration, believing it was some gigantic problem everywhere when it was not. And we are now seeing the same type of crap now. Right-wing media is going to give over-the-top airtime to every time any protestor does anything badly, whether they are affiliated with BLM or not, so as to drive voters in fear into the waiting arms of Daddy Trump and Team Red who will help save them from the scary Black Marxists. It is disgusting.
What perspective is there to put on violent mobs attacking police, burning buildings and murdering people? This isn't a one time incident. There have been 26 people murdered during these riots. A few years ago a BLM supporter ambushed and murdered several police in Dallas. BLM has murdered more people and certainly more law enforcement officers in this country in the last five years than radical Islamic terrorists have.
When you say "perspective", all you are saying is "it doesn't matter how violent BLM is or how many people are murdered in it's name, I will continue to say they are peaceful because there is at least one supporter out there who is".
It is pathetic Jeff. You are pathetic. You are making excuses for murderers while at the same time have happily slandered the Tea Party as "racist" because John Lewis lied and said someone called him a name. But then you have the nerve to call everyone else a "propagandist". Fuck off.
This idea that everyone who attends a protest, even everyone who commits some violent act at a protest, is a card-carrying BLM member and that all of BLM should be denounced as a violent terrorist organization because of the actions of a few. That is the disgusting tactic that you take because you don't like their politics. Because you cannot argue in good faith against their ideas, you have to try to discredit them as all violent sociopaths. That is the kind of shit that totalitarian states pull.
If you are going to apply the "collective guilt" standard to BLM then I expect you to apply it to everyone, including right-wing bad actors. But of course we all know you won't do this. Right-wingers are individuals who should be judged on their own merits. But left-wingers are part of a violent mob and should be denounced collectively. That is your hypocritical double standard.
What of people who make an affirmative choice to knowingly attend a BLM (the organization) sponsored rally? Should they be denounced, chem? Because the organization BLM is antisemitic, racist and marxist.
Should people who attend BLM (the organization) sponsored protests be condemned for their actions?
I believe they should rightly be condemned.
Those who attend a rally sponsored by some organization can lend credibility, sure.
But what precisely are they lending credibility *to*? That is in the eyes of each individual.
Just go back to Charlottesville. There were protestors there who were full-on Nazis. And then there were protestors there who were protesting the removal of a statue, but weren't Nazis.
They found solidarity in each other's cause, sure. But were the statue-only protestors endorsing Nazism?
chem, stop being evasive. The BLM organization is racist, anti-semitic and Marxist. They advocate for the dissolution of the nuclear family. They advocate for the destruction of our Republic.
This is all on their website.
People who affirmatively choose to support the BLM organization should be condemned.
I did it yesterday and you ran away and hid.
Fuck off Tulpa.
Is he wrong?
Judge by Jeff's reaction.
Right-wingers are individuals who should be judged on their own merits. But left-wingers are part of a violent mob and should be denounced collectively. That is your hypocritical double standard.
HAHAHAHAHA!
'There are good people on both sides', is that your takeaway from all this Jeffy? Didn't you denounce that statement as a racist dogwhistle?
Oh, you mean like one old lady holding a "Hands of My Medicare" sign came to define the Tea Party?
You just jistified attacking a girl because she posted #bluelivesmatter as a tribute to her father
"I expect propagandists to blow way out of proportion the events that help their cause and hide all the other news, so as to exaggerate the importance of the narrative that they wish to push"
Which describes exactly your advocacy for "systemic racism" and your arguments in favor of "BLM's concerns"
Please tell us all again how "systemic racism" is all a fantasy, and the *fact* that black drivers get pulled over disproportionately more frequently on the highway than white drivers is all the drivers' fault
Please tell us all again how “systemic racism” is all a fantasy
Now chemtard is openly parroting progressive talking points.
openly parroting progressive talking points.
I actually find it preferable to his veiled parroting of progressive talking points. It eliminates the need translate back and forth to newspeak to compare. Doubleplusgood, Jeffy!
"Where there is a BLM protest, there is almost certain to be violence and chaos."
This is absolutely untrue, and if you would sit down for a minute and think about it, you would know it is untrue, John.
There were BLM-sponsored protests here in Orange County in 6 or 7 cities every day for 2 weeks. So that is like 80 or so protests, of which maybe 10 or 15 resulted in violence. And among those, what generally happened was people protested, and as the day went on, the peaceful protestors went home while trouble makers began showing up to take the protest into the night. Hundreds of thousands of people spread coronavirus back on 5/30 but were otherwise peaceful up in los angeles.
The whole reason AntiFa is going to these protests is because the marxists HATE the idea that peaceful protest will result in real reforms. They want those peaceful protestors to get more and more disillusioned until they finally become violent. Don't help them.
And note, this is not excusing the violence. I merely accept that there are assholes being violent who want to burn it all down, and there are peaceful people who are actually trying to achieve reform.
This is absolutely untrue, and if you would sit down for a minute and think about it, you would know it is untrue, John.
But if you only consumed right-wing media, you would be forgiven for believing that every BLM protest is a violent riot. That is exactly what they are trying to do. Frame BLM as nothing more than violent Marxist radical terrorists intent on destroying America and the only man who can save America from such peril is Daddy Trump.
Frame BLM as nothing more than violent Marxist radical terrorists intent on destroying America
BLM Founder says we are trained Marxists
RIGHT WING TALKING POINTS!!!
Hi, Tulpa!
Frame BLM as NOTHING MORE than violent Marxist radical terrorists. There, emphasized for effect.
That is the right-wing propaganda plan here. Reduce BLM to nothing more than "scary Marxists". Ignore the racial injustice, ignore the police reforms, just run on a platform of "those scary Marxists gonna git ya"
Reduce BLM to nothing more than “scary Marxists”.
Because they are, and are quite honest about it. In fact, their entire manifesto is a melange of cultural marxist talking points.
Ignore the racial injustice, ignore the police reforms, just run on a platform of “those scary Marxists gonna git ya”
Maybe they shouldn't burn down blue cities if they want their message to be taken seriously. Especially all the guilt-afflicted White Saviors standing up for them, like you.
Frame BLM as NOTHING MORE than violent Marxist radical terrorists.
I agree that this is a gross mischaracterization. The BLM movement has been shown consistently to be supported by violent Marxist terrorists, a bunch of Boomers and Millenials duped by violent Marxist terrorists, and a bunch of Quislings terrified of violent Marxist terrorists. I believe you belong in the 3rd category.
^Has never visited BLM's website^
I know...I did visit and was blown away. At least these dickheads don't hide it.
Rioters, not protesters.
Protesters do not draw blood, rioters do.
seriously. some chick in a melee beat the Chief of Police with a weapon. not a protest.
He's not wrong. I'm glad someone was willing to say it.
The only thing he is wrong about is attributing sincere intentions of the author. Nothing about these people is sincere or well meaning.

"More Mudslinging in the Debate Over School Reopening

So everything "the experts" said is wrong, and Twitter is for twits?
Can we add to the insane number of 'national x days' with these?

I'm arguing with parents here in Orange County who want the schools to stay closed. (Hey if you want to sign a petition asking the schools to open up, go here: https://www.change.org/Open-OC-Schools)
These parents are literally making the argument that distance education is inferior to traditional schooling, and so it is UNFAIR to reopen schools with a distance learning option. This is because parents who are too fear-addled to let their kids go to school will thus see their kids fall behind.
I can't even.
is a difficult argument because *the conformity factories are closed!!!* ... but children do require educating.
To me, it is not really difficult. If I had my druthers, schools would be fully private, or at least funded by vouchers. But that isn't the case, so the wife and I have done quite a bit in our local district to make sure that our kids are getting the best possible education. And that is saying a lot given how many of the classes are shit, but kids test well due to spending all day at Kumon or Russian Math after school.
We have invested a significant amount of time and money into these schools and the State and nervous nellies are depriving me of that investment. If they want to give me a voucher for my kids, I'm all in. Until then, reopen the fucking schools.
man that's a tough spot I don't envy you or any of the parents w/kids in school (or not)
Serious question: Are you distance arguing or traditional arguing?
That is, are you face to face with these folks, or social-mediating them?
Distance arguing via- ugh- Next Door. A parent has created a petition demanding that the school districts close to face-to-face learning.
How about setting up an alternative petition demanding that such all-encompassing petitions be handled in person?
A civil rights lawyer might want to take a look at how your neighbor is denying you due process and violating your civil rights.
Distance arguing? If you're not distance agreeing with me on every single, minute item, you're racist, sexist, homophobic, and an irredeemably bad person who should be shipped off to a labor camp!

My niece, a single mom of four, has been fearmongering for years, the lockdown only gives her fodder. She hasn't let anyone come near the kids since March. My sister has to drop off things for her daughter and grandchildren literally at the curb. While everyone else is going about their lives, she's got her kids in total isolation, and she couldn't be more satisfied. She's got a PhD in management so she's no slouch with homeschooling, but she's got some mental issues, mamma bear syndrome, and these types should not be influencing how we govern. They live in complete fear of everything around them even during normal times. Hashtag this hashtag that... it's strange to witness.
Anyone catch this?
California is actually removing its anti-discrimination language from its constitution... because the state government knows full well they're going to employ massive racial discrimination in service of progress.
Should be pretty interesting to watch California's descent into a Venezuela/Zimbabwe intersectional shithole over the next generation or two.
I did hear about that.
So I guess it's official. Racism isn't bad. It's just been the wrong flavor of racism.
If the schools remain closed, cut any sort of property taxes that fund schools and give vouchers to parents who want in on homeschooling and alternative forms of education. It's the only option left.
Devos should come up with a comprehensive federal guideline on homeschooling - how to take SATs at home, background checks for homeschooling teachers, what can be done about extracurricular activities, etc. For profit private academies should be incentivized to open with tax credits and other incentives. Reopening schools in states like CA is a pipe dream, don't even bother.
Brutal honesty time -30% of High school seniors who are capable of basic math and English should just drop out of school and enter the workforce. Most of them aren't college material and a degree will be even more worthless in a post covid world. Get a job / experience, contribute to family finances, and starting saving up money. By the time they're 23, they might have more money in their banking accounts than the graduating class from a community college.
If they really want a diploma they can take some supplementary online classes to finish the job.
Open up the re-education camps and indoctrination centers.
If a few brats die, then so be it.
At least they died singing the praises of socialism, Marx and mass murder.
