Brickbat: Mount Pleasant's Finest

The Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, police department has fired Sgt. Matt Kinard after he was found passed out on-duty in a marked SUV with an open beer can between his legs. Kinard was found parked near the airport and transported back to police headquarters. He was charged with public intoxication.

Arrested and charged. Seems as though this might not be a brickbat.
You or I would have also been charged with DUI, some charge about being intoxicated with a firearm, open container, and who knows what else.
Dude got public intoxication which he will plead down to nothing and keeps his license, which will allow him to be hired by the next town over.

Arrested and charged or picked up and cited? Surely, his mugshot is available online after he was booked, amirite. Things are not always as they seem. Maybe he was just on break.
Charged with public intoxication rather than DUI - which anyone else would have been.
I’m surprised that his fellow officers didn’t enroll him in a rehab program. Then he wouldn’t have been fired and still be collecting his pay.
“The criminal consequences are consistent with those a non-law enforcement member of our community would be exposed to and we should not be expected to be treated differently in this circumstance."
"Of course, if he'd shot someone or taken their stuff, well, fuck that shit!"
“The criminal consequences are consistent with those a non-law enforcement member of our community ..."
What, no Rayshard Brooks treatment? Obviously, different strokes for different communities. Is it the jurisdiction or badge that matters.
"A black man was drunk, fell asleep in his car in a drive thru, and was by the police. A police officer in Aurora (the same PD that killed #ElijahMcClain) got drunk ON DUTY and was passed out in his squad car in the middle of the road blocking traffic. He’s still alive. He still has his job"

Good photo of cop slumped over the wheel and broken window glass. Guess them could not wake him.
I'm sure the union will have him back on the job next week.
What's the opposite of a brickbat? Because this is one of those.
Found by whom? And transported back to whose police headquarters? CHS is in Norh Charleston, technically the next town over but across a big river and a few swamps, and might as well be a world away in all other respects. As usual, methinks there’s a whole lot more to this story we’ll never know and that no beat reporter will ever bother to follow up on.
If I had bothered to click the link first, I would’ve read “escorted back” and “met by his superiors,” so not arrested, not clear if he was breathalyzed, etc. like “any member of the public”. So aside from the sloppy reporting (escorted by cops from which jurisdiction? Escorted as in followed while he drove, or cuffed and stuffed in a cruiser?), this sounds like they’re treating it as an employment matter more than a criminal one. “Aw shucks, if you’d just had the beer instead of being passed out, I wouldn’t have to fire you, old buddy.”
Hey, it's my old hometown! Honestly not surprised he got fired over it, The cops in the area tend to be pretty good about policing their own, especially CPD. They handled the Walter Scott shooting right, which is more than I can say for any other high-profile police shooting I'm aware of during that time.
A friend of mine from my high school days was found passed out at a stop light with his foot on the brake and an almost empty bottle of Jack between his legs. We couldn't believe it when he got a deal for public intox, nothing but a fine and some community service.
Dude turned into a raging drunk. I briefly split an apartment with him until one night he came home covered in blood and ranting like an insane person. We eventually pieced together that he had blown all of the rent money at this crap bar down the street and was hit by a car while walking home.

Is the lesson that the sentence was not heavy handed enough or yours for not being heavy handed enough when he blew the rent? Where was the tough love, friend?
The cop thought the beer was an O'Doul's. It could happen. The real question is did his fellow cops draw on him since he was unquestionably dangerous given he was intoxicated and armed.
My first moderated comment above. Nothing obvious to warrant it. What gives?
Just squirrels, man.
