Support, Don't 'Dominate,' Protesters Seeking 'Equal Justice Under the Law,' Writes Former Defense Secretary Mattis
Plus: Protest updates, Grindr goes woke, Twitter suspends an account for repeating Trump's words, and more...

Militarized cops and Trump photo op are too much for former Marine general. Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis—the first of four people to occupy that position under Trump, if you count acting heads—is strongly condemning the president's response to the last week of Black Lives Matter protests.
"I have watched this week's unfolding events, angry and appalled," Mattis wrote in a Wednesday statement that harshly condemned the government's militarized response to the protests and accused Trump of trying "to divide us."
Some will wave off the former general's condemnations as sour grapes stemming from his time in the administration. But Mattis has hardly been a Trump critic in the 15 months since he left his position. In fact, Mattis "had refrained from publicly criticizing his former boss since resigning," notes Axios.
In his new statement, provided to The Atlantic, Mattis stuck up for protesters coming out to condemn the killing of George Floyd and the pattern of police brutality in America.
Protesters are "rightly demanding" a country that commits to "equal justice under the law," wrote Mattis, who urged people not to be distracted by "a small number of lawbreakers" compared to the "tens of thousands of people of conscience" making this "wholesome and unifying demand."
Fundamentally, these protests are about "insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation," said Mattis. He goes on:
When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.
We must reject any thinking of our cities as a "battlespace" that our uniformed military is called upon to "dominate." At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them.
James Madison wrote in Federalist 14 that "America united with a handful of troops, or without a single soldier, exhibits a more forbidding posture to foreign ambition than America disunited, with a hundred thousand veterans ready for combat." We do not need to militarize our response to protests. We need to unite around a common purpose. And it starts by guaranteeing that all of us are equal before the law.
Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that "The Nazi slogan for destroying us…was 'Divide and Conquer.' Our American answer is 'In Union there is Strength.'" We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.
Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.
We can come through this trying time stronger, and with a renewed sense of purpose and respect for one another. The pandemic has shown us that it is not only our troops who are willing to offer the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the community. Americans in hospitals, grocery stores, post offices, and elsewhere have put their lives on the line in order to serve their fellow citizens and their country. We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Square. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln's "better angels," and listen to them, as we work to unite.
Only by adopting a new path—which means, in truth, returning to the original path of our founding ideals—will we again be a country admired and respected at home and abroad.

Is Fag Dog Mattis still upset he didn't get a war with Iran?
"harshly condemned the government's militarized response to the protests "
I wonder how Mattis responded when Al Quaida protested his presence in Iraq?
That Mattis is pissy about the request for active duty military to assist, is strange. Weird selective memory too.
He was commanding a battalion of Marines during the time of the L.A. Riots in 1992, when troops from the First Marine Division were mobilized on Day Four to help maintain public order. Is Mattis claiming the events of the last nine-ten days aren't as bad? Did it slip his mind, at the time he was commanding Marines, that about 1500 guys from 1MarDiv were being sent into L.A?
Also, the guy who killed George Floyd has been arrested and is facing murder charges. I'd like to help but I need Mattis to advise me which building I should burn down and who needs a good beating?
All you need to know this is more about nihilism than anything is by the fact the riots went international.
What fuck does Montreal have to do with Floyd? Smashing up windows here proves what exactly?
'We stand with'....fuck off.
It's not much about Floyd, but it's not much about nihilism either. It's about being locked down for three months.

love how they're standing by kneeling.
It's their French ancestry. They can't help it.
Also, the guy who killed George Floyd has been arrested and is facing murder charges.
Which only happened after protests. Then charges were increased and the accomplices were also arrested, but only after more protests. Would the arrests have happened without burning and looting? Hard to say. It's a lot easier at least to say that the protests had an effect though.
Pretty good rationalization. It took two months before Mohammed Noor was arrested. I guess they should have rioted.
Libertarians for Rule by Mob. Has a nice ring to it. Chauvin was charged the same as Noor, but Righteous Anger(tm) justifies different justice.
Now go play the Motte and Bailey and claim that you weren't implicitly endorsing the riots.
Sure, Juice was advocating for rule by mob. That’s precisely what his comment meant.
Actually, that is exactly what his post supports. Proper investigation of the charges against these officers would take more than a couple of days and if they get off on technicalities, its going to be the mob's fault.
The real irony to this story is that most of the protesters in Minneapolis will vote for the same, union dependent, "progressives" who let Chauvin keep his job in the first place. This tragedy is not about racism - its about stupidity.
Yes, that's precisely what his comment meant.
And now the autopsy has been released, turns out he had a heart attack, showed no trauma to the neck and had meth and fentanyl in his system. When I saw the video I said he looked like he was having a heart attack, not being asphyxiated, now it looks like he had a heart attack caused by a combination of drugs and exertion which is hardly the cops fault, but of course the cop will be tried for murder anyway because everyone has to be hypersensitive. Every side reacted long before they knew the facts, the only justice happening is social justice, and when you have to qualify justice with a term like social it's probably not justice.
Depends on which autopsy report you believe. There've been two: the county's official one, and the family had Michael Baden do one. Both have obvious potential biases. Best two out of three?
Oh, and Floyd was positive for COVID.
This. Two hired guns, two different stories.

"Trump is being divisive, and fuck everyone who's not progressive"
-Mad Dog Mattis
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/10/16/defense-secretary-mattis-never-registered-for-any-political-party.html
Mattis: "I’ve never registered for any political party."
Obey your Daddy Gov overlords, their word is sacrosanct
Ok, that was quite the non-sequitur.
Was it really?
Mattis is far from a stupid guy. (Though perhaps lapses in judgment like sitting on Thanatos's Board of Directors might be more the norm than we thought?)
So why put his name to such easily debunked bullshit? What purpose does it serve?
The purpose is stated in his own statement. He is concerned about the future of the country under President Trump's divisive leadership style.
Mattis is a hero for following the old adage of fighting fire with fire!
#fightdivisivenesswithdivisiveness
#notoleranceforintolerance
So, a guy who has actual experience with being military, called in to quash rioting, speaks his mind. That would sure seem to give his opinion more weight, not less.
Well he is a firm believer in the Syria model
"That would sure seem to give his opinion more weight"
The Iraqis would like to think so, I'm sure.
I'm sure the draft dodging, pornstar paying off, germaphobe king of debt is a better leader than a marine general best known for being beloved by his troops. Makes sense, if you don't think too hard.
But he disagreed with Dear Leader, therefore his character must be trashed.
Jeff's suddenly keen on the neocons and finds them principled, and all they had to do was diss Orange Hitler.
I’m commenting on people who habituate this comments section and consistently go to great lengths to defend Trump, not Mattis.
Wow, Jeff's PO'd because people are knocking ENB's Journolist tally reporting and his fifty-centing.
Are you going to tell us next that Boehm's Amash articles totally weren't brown-envelope journalism?
Also, Jeff isn’t here, Mrs. Torrance.
Wow, so you're a really big fan of the draft, DOL?
Also, what's wrong with washing your hands and properly paying the whores you binked?
And, did you just seriously call one of the biggest warmongers of the last 40 years a "beloved general"?
Why the hell are you on a libertarian site?
He gets paid per lie.
Like the one about priests in their clerical garb being forced off of their own church grounds so that Trump could get a cynical photo op with an upside down bible?

Hey Lying Jeffy, where’s the cite that Trump said he’s a king?
As if you've ever given a flying fuck about churchmen, DOL.
Stop being so blatantly opportunistic in your grievance mongering.
Mattis is a hardcore statist/true believer. Trump is just a crass narcissist who is easily distracted. If you can't figure out which one is worse, you've got a long way to go.
Funny story I saw about that, although I don't know if it's true. Apparently some of the Marine units were attached to cop patrols to serve as backup in case things went pear-shaped. The cops decided to sweep out some gang strongholds in the city; at one house, they got everyone in position, then told the Marines "cover us" before they moved in.
The problem is that cops say "cover" when they mean, "keep your guns pointed and if things get bad, then engage." For the Marines, it means "covering fire," and these guys unloaded on this old 1940s-era ranch with M-16s and a .50 cal. Miraculously, no one in the house got hurt, but every single person surrendered pdq.
I am laughing through the tears at this one.
Good thing it was Marines. Had it been Infantry they'd have called in artillery first.
Finally a proven way of earning money online. Yes! you can earn more than you think only by working just a few hours from home regularly. I have been doing this job for like a few weeks and my last weekly payment was exactly 2537 dollars.

"At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors." He makes a distinction between domestic use of the military and foreign use in a war; seems like a big distinction to gloss over.
Oh, boy. And the lead-off batter gets the trashing started.
Oh, boy. The crying has already started. Leave Reason Alone!
The only crying here is by the butthurt proto-fascists who are trying to square the circle that their dear leader is an awe inspiring leader with the fact that an actual respected military leader just called him a threat to the republic.
He cut taxes a little bit.
Dear Leader’s birthday is coming up.
Hi Delta!
Funny, the only brown shirts I see bringing about a brand new Kristallnacht are all progressives like you.
But then the fascists have always known the value of telling the big lie. You're an A student.
I distinctly remember De Opp telling us he is not a liberal or progressive.
Yeah but he lies constantly.
It's Jeffs all the way down.
Trump had nothing to do with any of the fascist crap the Democrats in Minnesota and Minneapolis visited upon their population.
And if you respect a war monger and establishment prick like Mattis, well, that says a lot about you.
I can't wait for tomorrow's Roundup where ENB praises George Will. Then next week a series of interviews with The Lincoln Project.
Apparently all you have to do to win over ENB is orange man bad.
Hint: After three plus years of his Presidency, it can be concluded that Orange Man *is* bad.
Hint: Nobody actually cares for your opinion, which is what you are presenting as fact.
He is bad in some aspects, he is good in others. You're just too dumb to ever allow the latter opinion to be offered.
Come on, Jesse, this is post-modern America. Opinion is fact, especially for the party of Science.
Earth Skeptic: Correction. That's the party of SETTLED, THE DEBATE IS OVER, science.
What is he doing that is good?
Well, he isn't telling blacks what color they aren't.
In his defense, he can't remember what color they are.
Collared greens.
He *is* telling him he has done more for them than Abraham Lincoln. I'm not black, so I'm know I'm not supposed to be able to understand what it is like to be black -- but, if I were black, I think I'd be wanting both Trump and Biden to piss off.
I were black, I think I’d be wanting both Jeff and Sarcasmic to piss off.
You guys are mentally ill. Trump is popular with less than half of the country (42% approve), yet anytime someone criticizes him, it must be the same person.
Do you realize what a logical failure that line of thought is? You need to get your brain checked. Again, not kidding.
Don't try and gaslight me you fraud. When the writing style and mantra are exactly the same it's obvious your sockpuppeting.
Hey Lying Jeffy, still waiting on the cite of Trump saying he was a king.
You guys are doubling down on the insanity.
I've offered (to Jesse, who declined the bet, tellingly) to reveal my identity with proof of every thing I've ever said about myself. I nominated John as a neutral 3rd, but I'm open for other suggestions. I'd be willing to drop anonymity more broadly if it weren't for a few dedicated trolls in here who I think would legitimately try to cause trouble for me.
Hey Lying Jeffy, where’s the cite of Trump saying he’s a king?
See comment below.
Hey cowardly R Mac, are you gonna take my bet, or are you gonna continue to cower?
I'll bet any amount of $ + loser has to leave reason comments forever.
Hi Delta!
So we're back to this silly game again, huh?
Well after getting caught repeatedly lying I can understand your need to try to change the subject.
Yeah, still waiting on the cite were he called himself king Lying Jeffy.
Lol. Nobody gives a fuck about you Jeff.
Sure, do it.
He's not you, for starters.
"What is he doing that is good?"
I didn't vote for him and I'm lukewarm on him at best but he has done several VERY GOOD things, along with the bad, that I can name off the top of my head
1. initiate troop pullout in Afganistan and Syria (not complete I know but it was initiated which is a bigger step than any previous asshole in office)
2. First Step Act
3. Pardoning of several black victims of our shitty drug war
4. GORSUCH! best court appointment in literally decades.
5. Reduce corporate tax rate by 15 FULL PERCENTAGE points. so huge for our economy. Best move a president has taken for our economy in literally decades.
6. Pulling out of the meaningless virtue-signalling, 'screw america' Paris accords. Very nice
Those are just off the top of my head. There's plenty more.
Then again yes, his tweets are awful, his press conferences are an embarrassment. the tariffs are self defeating. the wall is a joke and a honey pot for idiots on both sides but essentially meaningless.
If you get the point where you think someone is 100% bad, you may be blinded by your emotions.
He should have been ineligible for any decent american's support the moment he asked Russia for help getting elected on live TV for us all to witness.
Hey Lying Jeffy, did I miss the cite of Trump saying he was king? If so could you re-post it?
Several times. In one letter from his attorneys:
"It remains our position that the President's actions here, by virtue of his position as the chief law enforcement officer, could neither constitutionally nor legally constitute obstruction because that would amount to him obstructing himself, and that he could, if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon if he so desired."
-They are saying the president cannot be guilty of obstruction, since he is the law. For those of you aware of history, "L'État, c'est moi".
Or in Trump v Vance, in which Trump makes the claim that the president enjoys “temporary absolute immunity," from all law enforcement. Quite literally arguing that there is no law which applies to him for his term.
I forget, does libertarianism support no accountability for presidents? Libertarianism is really big on having one all powerful central leader, right?
Great Job! Now hightlight the part where it says "king" ao they have to eat it!
That's quite a long winded way of saying he never said it.
No no, we're totally going to trust the chicken bones you threw and the subsequent "inTDSerpretation"
You though so, as long as that leader's name begins with "O."
no no he will claim he didn't but then vanish when asked for proof lile links to his comments
Still waiting for the cite where he called himself king you lying sack of shit.
Obviously, De Opp or Jeff whoever used the word, “king”, didn’t literally mean king. But be pedantic as if you think that makes you look like you are winning this debate.
Lol
(Yet more) proof that leftists have no sense of humor.
I think even Dummy De Oppresso understands that was a fucking joke. It's pathetic that fools like it have to use such pointless nonsense as fodder for their complaints. News for you Dummy. If that's all you can come up with, just shut the fuck up and let someone with a brain speak. 'cause there's tons of *legitimate* reasons to criticize the man.
I'm quite serious. My jaw dropped when I saw it. It is so clearly traitorous, I don't know how else to describe it.
Then you have the fucking sense of humor of an autistic senile dead person.
"I don’t know how else to describe it"
makes sense what with you being an imbecile
Hi Delta!
But you're perfectly fine with an administration actually illegally using the intelligence apparatus of the US to spy on an opposing campaign and incoming administration. Obama literally conspired with Medyedev to "Give him some space" for his second election. He literally threw our allies in eastern Europe under the bus to appease the Russians as soon as he came into office.
Yeah, Ima call bullshit on your concerns over treason.
Says the guy who ends every conversation with anyone who challenges his beliefs with a “fuck you”.
He didn't ask for Russia's help in the election. He asked Russia to provide the emails from Hillary's private server, if they had them. Producing them would have done nothing but prove that Hillary had turned over every official email, just like she was required to, and the only ones she erased and bleach-bitted had to do with Chelsea's wedding and her yoga routines. It would have proved that the whole 'but her emails!' thing was much ado about nothing and removed a lot of people's biggest objection to her, which would have helped her in the election.
Unless, of course, you believe Hillary and the media weren't telling us the truth about her private server...
So if Joe Biden said this tomorrow, "N. Korea, if you're listening, if you can find the missing emails from Jr. about the Trump tower meeting, you will be rewarded mightily (long, long pause)...by our press," you would be A-ok with that? You wouldn't find that at all traitorous?
I like you change the subject from the things you're caught lying about.
"Give me a little space."
“(long, long pause)…”
Lying Jeffy thinks the pause is very very very very important.
Hi Delta!
You mean like Teddy Kennedy actually did? The only documented #RUSSIAn colluders have all been team blue.
Somehow I don't think you'd give two shits if your favorite candidate was openly supported by some foreign leaders. You're not mad that Russia supported him. You're mad that Russia supported him*
which isn't even true but whatever
He should have been ineligible for any decent american’s support the moment he asked Russia for help getting elected on live TV for us all to witness.
But the question you asked was what has he done that is good? I answered that question not "should you support him after you come to believe the govt of Russia also supports him". That's a different question.
And jeff once again resorts to his conspiracy theories lol.
I don't get it. Even if he had seriously asked Russia about evidence for criminal wrongdoing by Hillary, why would that make him "ineligible" for the presidency, either legally or morally?
In what way?
He got himself elected. It was HER turn!
The little Venn diagram in your head is missing the intersection containing libertarians who support neither major party.

We CAN grab all the pussy, all the time, and NONE will be smart enough to EVER grab our pussies right back!
These voters simply cannot or will not recognize the central illusion of politics… You can pussy-grab all of the people some of the time, and you can pussy-grab some of the people all of the time, but you cannot pussy-grab all of the people all of the time! Sooner or later, karma catches up, and the others will pussy-grab you right back!
Fuck off, spaz.
Sevo is STILL on the rag, everyone! Please be so informed! He'll probably tell us another 15 times today, to make SURE that we all know!
Oh, man, SQRLSY, do you have a that one some kind of macro key.
Oh hell Sevo, you done gone and did it. You summoned "Reason"'s resident dementia patient.
Apologize to all of us.
DoL, Pro Pho, the Demented one, aren't they all one big ourobourous of sockestry?
I forget the dickhead who was shitting up all the threads this week but he's changed his name to Pro Pho. Whoop dee doo.
Think it was 'Mike Drop'
I don't know why they keep changing their name. Or why they keep coming back.
That's the one.
Mike Laursen looks to be onto another cowardly sock.
Wrong-o, boy detective!
It’s kinda fun to make up new names. I learned it from “tulpa”.
Doesn't really matter
NPC is NPC
Just another unit of the hivemind
So you're saying I schooled you
Yes, you taught me how to behave here.
So you're saying I won.
I’m saying I studied your style, you magnificent bastard. I idolize you. I realize your way of communicating and interacting with people is so much better.
Wish I was as good at stealing people’s handles as you are.
Love the way you celebrate “owning” and “breaking” people rather than doing wimpy shit like having meaningful conversations or learning from each other or making American political culture more mature.
So, yes, you won. I admire everything about you. You are like a god to me.
You should be proud about how your spearheaded the destruction of a place where libertarians used to have mature conversations.
Kudos!
Who are you then?
Don't do the sock thing, please. It feeds their paranoia.
lolol i love that you a sock are crying about them lololl
It doesn’t matter.
Let’s start with his nurturing of divisiveness in the country
Ah, the "divisive" concern troll pops up.
Anybody who cares about America, who has been paying attention for last decade or so, is deeply concerned about divisiveness is going to our country.
Only if you think your side will get its ass kicked.
Funny how you didn't show any concern while the previous racist president stoked division for eight years...
But you weep, truly you do.
"Anybody who cares about America, who has been paying attention for last decade or so, is deeply concerned about divisiveness is going to our country."
He says, visiting a comment section where he is clearly unwelcome for the sole purpose of sowing division
Like you care.
Yes, you seemed so concerned about The Resistance and the coup they launched and the laws they broke and the lies they told
So Trump is responsible for the divisiveness, not the Democrats who started protesting even before he was sworn in and kept an evidence free investigation going for over a year, despite knowing it had no basis in fact? The same Democratic party whose current nominee for President that has told blacks they aren't black unless the vote Democrats? The same Democratic party whose last nominee called Republican voters a basketful of deplorable a, and who the nominee before accused conservative voters of clinging to their Bibles and guns? Who daily accuse Republican and conservatives if being I'll informed and educated? Who push that the white, straight male is responsible for all our ills? Who daily push an us vs them classism? They had nothing to do with the divisiveness? Really?
Hint: even if Trump had tried to put his hand out to them, they had already informed him before he even took office that they were going to bite it off. Blaming Trump for the divisiveness us ignoring at least the last two decades of history. How unifying was it for the VP to accuse Romney of wanting to put blacks back in chains?
Another hint: when progressives talk about unifying they mean capitulation to their programs and thought processes. As long as I can remember (so early 1980s) the Democrats and progressives have vilafied anyone to the right of them. They don't want cooperation they want total surrender.
You forget:
The same Democratic party that is in charge of the deep blue police departments in the deep blue cities in deep blue states where all of this police brutality keeps occurring.
"Hint: After three plus years of his Presidency, it can be concluded that Orange Man *is* bad."
Hint: After three plus years, lefty fucking losers are still whining. Stuff your TDS up your ass, so your head has someone to talk to, and grwo up.
So… Sevo is on the rag AGAIN today! Has it ever occurred to you, you could spend your time more efficiently, by letting us know when you are NOT on the rag?
Fuck off, spaz.
HOW MANY TIMES PER DAY do you feel compelled to let us all know, yet AGAIN, that you are on the rag?
Fuck off, spaz; your mommy is calling you.
All take note! Sevo is still on the rag! Agree, concur, duly noted!
All in favor of officially recording the multiply-confirmed (established, verified) FACT that Sevo is on the rag, please say nothing, because we all, already know this!
Any "nay"?
No nay!
Sevo is now duly noted to be on the rag, and hopefully we can adjourn this meeting without being so informed, yet AGAIN!
Piss off Sqrls.
You're not funny.
Mother's lament is on the rag today! All take note!
you seem to be the one crying about everyone shiteater
add crying about me now to prove me right
That never happens. Sevo has some serious anger management issues. So does Nardz.
Lol
Reason= Never-Trump Republicans who smoke pot.
Remember the old motto: Mexicans, pot and butt sex.
And no Chinese tariffs ever!
Nope. We're into diehard progressive territory here.
Hello.
Boy, the word 'protest' sure is tattooed all over the links.
Too funny.
"I have watched this week's unfolding events, angry and appalled,"
One of major signs of TDS is thinking that your tizzy is an argument.
"Burning down a police station" is more popular than either Joe Biden or Donald Trump...
Libertarian moment has been overtaken by the anarchist moment.
https://twitter.com/benshapiro/status/1268218829076697088
Speech is violence.
Misgendering is violence.
Burning stores to the ground is not violence.
They're really going to run with this one, huh?
"Violence is when an agent of the state kneels on a man's neck until all of the life is leached out of his body. Destroying property, which can be replaced, is not violence. To use the same language to describe those two things is not moral" -@nhannahjones on CBSN
And the word to describe two elderly shop owners being between near to death in front of their shop?
They were defending their mere property, clearly by the lights of that intellectual powerhouse at CBSN the shop owners were in the wrong.
Or the old guy who was killed in St. Louis.
OK, Hannah-Jones, start replacing.
People > property, unless it is my property. - Chris Palmer
Violence is when an agent of the state kneels on a man’s neck until all of the life is leached out of his body.
"But only if that man is not white. You honkies can get shot or beaten by the cops all day, we frankly don't give a damn about that."
Hello.
That was the best news in the links.
Apparently the crowd periodically chants "peaceful protest!"...
Like when cops scream "Stop resisting!"
JUST KIDDING
Nice, thumbs up.
Thumbs up, don't shoot?
It's coming right for us!
I have watched this week's unfolding events, angry and appalled...
Never before has he seen such naked politicization of a moment. And in an election year!
Protesters Seeking 'Equal Justice Under the Law,'
including for the "outside agitators" that are detracting from their peaceful marches for George Floyd, right? RIGHT?!
I would just prefer them to point to the actual inequality instead of just disparate outcomes, which is not a proper way to normalize data. Dividing it by incidents of crime, as was done by the Professor at UW, is more appropriate and doesn't actually show any disparity.
As someone yesterday noted, if we use disparate outcomes as the only allowed metric, then men are way more abused by the system than women are.
Anytime I hear the word "equal" outside of a mathamatical context, I reach for my revolver.
Drug enforcement agents should not be conducting covert surveillance of protests...
Well, overt surveillance would get their asses kicked.
Tear gas is a controlled substance.
Mattis has a memory problem if he truly believes that.
"Well, the lifetime that *counts*."
I think he means "to pay lip service to unite the American people."
Trump isn't there to unify; he is there to clarify the divisions. How many 'conservatives' have been forced to announce themselves to be anything but?
Yeah, Trump is the first guy everyone think of when we need someone to clarify things.
*thinks
It’s called a typo. Live with it.
The only point on which I will disagree with the general is "Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people". I fear his view of history is rather selective. We have not had a president who has tried to unite the country since Carter.
JFK was probably the last one, to be honest. The ones since him have been pretty blatant about highlighting divisions, even if they put in milquetoast qualifiers about "unity" and "the American people."
It's why I've always found the "divisive" complaint to be so disingenuous. When these people (and I include political activists and the media, and most politicians in this) talk about "unity," what they really mean is, "unity on our terms." It's a passive-aggressive effort to coerce you through guilt about having different opinions from them.
The goal is to get (re)elected. Division and fear-mongering is the easiest means.
The larger goal is to enhance party power. Even egotistical pols will sometimes sacrifice for the holy cause.
Rare. Usually they jump ship merely to improve election chances.
"unity on our terms"
this guy gets it
JFK was probably the last one to be successful but I honestly think that Carter tried. At least, while he was in office. To address Echo's point, I really haven't paid attention to him since.
"since Carter"
Have you heard his later work? He's a vicious partisan hack now
Mattis conveniently forgot the whole Civil War thingie.
Aside from that, the President's job is to execute his duties as assigned to him in Article II. It is not to act as a daddy to the nation.
But what about all the citizens with daddy issues? And all the nervous child-adults? Can he be a mommy, too?
“ in my lifetime”
How old do you think Mattis is?
Mattis is a bitter clinger.
"Mattis has a memory problem if he truly believes that."
More likely problems regarding his intellect and honesty.
He's a general. According to a buddy of mine in the army, once you get around Major, it's all politics. You don't become a general by just being a good fighter.
Trump should be leading the nation in looting and rioting.
Liberté, égalité, free nikés.
"first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people"
Apparently Mattis never considered the plebians to be a part of the "American people".
"Economists expect that figure will show nearly one in five Americans were out of work in the middle of last month."
If only they knew then that the lockdowns were not sacrosanct.
"Having Type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need to get oxygen or to go on a ventilator, according to the new study."
"QUICK!! Mandate universal blood-type testing and lock those Type A's right down!"
No, in the same of equality and solidarity, we must lock down all people with blood.
Type O people need to check their privilege.
Why? It's type AB that gets all the benefits.
The association signal at 9q34 was located at the ABO blood group locus and a blood-group-specific analysis showed higher risk for A-positive individuals (OR=1.45, 95% CI, 1.20 to 1.75, P=1.48x10-4) and a protective effect for blood group O (OR=0.65, 95% CI, 0.53 to 0.79, P=1.06x10-5).
I'll rephrase. When you need blood, it’s type AB that gets all the benefits.
Benefits from superior Type O blood! Type AB is junk. Nobody else wants it.
"Type O people need to check their privilege."
Thanks, that was a good one! Literal LOL!
you have shit in your teeth crybaby
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing Minneapolis police.
For refusing to confiscate non-state guns?
Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people
Anyone who actually says something like this is either completely full of shit or has a very short memory indeed. Is Mattis applying for a Reason internship or something?
To be dismayed at the actions of the Troll-In-Chief is one thing. Especially since he fired Mattis's ass.
To tell a whopper like 'most divisive President in history', when as Jesse above noted, we have things like the Civil War in our history, is quite another. And when the guy immediately before Trump was one of the most deliberately antagonistic guys to hold the office. Obama set race relations, among other things, back 40-50 years. Plus gems like, "You didn't build that."
I suspect the Obama Administration did not shy away from the military in its attempts to ideologically change American institutions by promoting leaders it found appealing. Kind of wonder whether we'd be better off forcing every O-8 and above to retire, and see just how far the rot trickled down.
O-6. Without a doubt.
I guess because Mattis wasn't one of the millions of "bitter clingers" who should "learn to code", he didn't view Obama as divisive.
Elite aristocrats like Mattis really have no clue about how the proles feel.
“Those clinging to their god and guns” wasn’t divisive at all. Nor was Billary calling 1/2 the nation “deplorables” (except she was never president and never will be, lol).
Even the National Inquirer wouldn't run with Trump's Joe Scarborough conspiracy.
Too plausible.
Story needed more bat boy.
Dead cute intern in his office. With a skull fracture. (Wasn't she partially unclothed too?)
Oh, so a mid 20s young woman had a heart condition or neurological episode, and managed to fall, hitting her head 'just so' against a desk or coffee table, and that caused the skull fracture. And no one heard or saw a thing. In your office, alone, late?
LOLOLOL. Outstanding lawyering.
Let’s say Scarborough did murder her. Why is it appropriate for Trump make it one of the central issues to harp on from the Presidential podium, in the middle of several crises?
"too local"
Oh, Trump is a journalist. Got it.
When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution.
Careful, General. You may be digging yourself in further.
I'm a little rusty. Which is the right to burn and loot?
Interstate commerce?
Nice.
So in his interpretation this includes all of the United States as well as sovereign nation-states. Now I'm clear.
Well, we have been told that all the bad apples are not from around here.
Free exercise cause?
Aerosolized chemical agents like pepper spray could spread COVID-19 at protests, health experts warn.
Do health experts have anything to say about large, tightly-packed gatherings with a lot of screaming?
Do the experts have anything to say about the possibility that agents like pepper spray could *neutralize* COVID-19?
Do the experts know we regard them as ass-clowns?
Royal "We".
i'm in on the We.
PhD dissertations are probably being written about this.
In support or rebuttal?
Nice catch.
Public urination and defecation in SF is still OK with >6 ft. separation.
Cops "kettle" peaceful protesters in a "catch 22"... We will NOT let you leave, as we encircle you, and then time goes by, and you are violating curfew! This is a clear violation (as long as protesters are peaceful) of 1st Amendment rights to "assemble peacefully".
HERE is a man who actually DID something to help the protesters!
https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/02/us/dc-protesters-sheltered-trnd/index.html
This man sheltered dozens of protesters in his Washington, DC, home to protect them from arrest
Good for him! Even if he does NOT have an American-sounding name, and isn't quite totally "white" looking! Decent and helpful people come in all kinds and colors?!?! Who knew!??!?!
LOL. Wow. You really do fall for narratives. Modern day Jesus that guy. Ignore the fact that they were already out well past the curfew.
Idiot! They are out past the curfew because they get "kettled" like fish, and the police won't let them through police lines! Catch 22! Can you READ? Can you THINK? HOW do you obey the curfew and go home, if the cops won't let you? We're not all rich enough to own our own helicopter to come and lift us out, you know!
He more REACTS.
And?
I mean are people on here really defending a curfew? Really? Sounds like pretty tame civil disobedience there.
Agreed! Me personally, I can see curfews being justified ONLY in absolute worst-case scenarios. Which this isn't, in most cities where they are being implemented, IMHO.
We have such extreme conservative-to-fascist opinions expressed here, I personally find enough fascism to attack here, without even ever getting around to sometimes-borderline issues of, WHY be calling for curfews in the first place?
But yeah, I see your point... 1st Amendment doesn't have an "except at night" exception listed to our right to "assemble peaceably".
Nothing says libertarian like let them riot, and loot, and burn. It's fascist to protect people and their property.
It is Known.
Your deflections could use more conviction.
I'm sorry he upset you
AVN will be eliminating all "interracial" and "ethnic" categories from the AVN Awards.
Replaced with Best Crush Video Award.
Big Black Cocks hardest hit.
#BCM
LOL, thanks.
cock magic?
This man started an account where he tweets exactly what the president tweets. He just got suspended.
At least fact check him first.
THAT was interesting, thanks! https://twitter.com/dylanmarron/status/1268207757968076800
Rank hath its privileges! Stank hath its privileges! The Donald serves as case in point for both assertions!
Sqrls seems to think that this means Trump should be censored.
Libertarians think rather that it demonstrates just how oppressive and ridiculous Twitter's censorship policies are.
Jeff and Nuttplug will soon squawk something about "Private companies can censor everyone"
Libertarians will point out that while they shouldn't be forced to stop censoring people, censorship in the private sphere is still anti-libertarian. Libertarianism isn't solely applicable to government.
"Sqrls seems to think that this means Trump should be censored."
Flat-out wrong! We should all have the same standards of free speech (and I mean more-free, not less-free, speech) applied to us all, from The Emperor on down to the lowest peon. Fist of Etiquette's post clued us in... It ain't happenin'! Der TrumpfenFuhrer gets a LOT more free speech than us peons do! From no less than those "horrible liberals" who run Twitter!
Here's what I don't get about how SOME conservatives want to tear down Section 230...
On the vast majority of college campuses, liberal “political correctness” gets its way. And this is heavily Government Almighty funded. “PC” gets its way, for the most part (perhaps a wee tad less than in academia) in employment (discrimination) in general, and in the media.
And then conservatives suddenly expect to get it THEIR WAY if we set aside legal protections against endless lawsuits, on the internet, ie., kill Section 230?!?! WTF, conservatives, what kind of fantasy world do you live in? The PC bastards WILL eat your lunch, if you kill section 230! Lawyers are educated in PC in PC-oriented law schools, and they will PC you to death, when you sue for your “free speech” from Twitter etc. (which you don’t own, of course… “You didn’t build that”!). 230 PROTECTS you from more armies of ravaging lawyers!
So in other words "Keep on censoring political speech and extend it to the US president".
Nobody should censor anyone, Sqrls. It's immoral... even if a private corporation is doing it.
“Keep on censoring political speech and extend it to the US president”.
WHY do you keep on saying that the Intergalactic Subsmegmonic Vampiritic Strawmen are eating your brains?!?! Is there any EVIDENCE that your crazy beliefs are TRUE?!?!!?
Look, being a slavish sycophant to Reason's pro-censorship position just comes with the territory. Why are you so upset when the truth is pointed out? Reason repeatedly advocates for censorship. They glorify it as long as it's done for the True Cause(tm).
I call BS on BS!!!
and then you eat it
Truth hurts. Embrace it and it shall set you free.
Funny, I didn’t see any place where SQRLSY advocates for censorship. Do you have magical glasses?
He borrowed the Uterus'.
no its that you're bad at reading and a retard
he's advocatesd to have me censored dozens of times now
Poor Baby! Let's have a pity-party for Tulpa the Uber-Troll, now, shall we?
Fressen Sie bitte meine nackt behaart grosse Fleisch-schlange.
BITTE sehen Sie auch den großen, hervorragenden Experten-Psychologen Phillip Zimbardo für Ihre psychischen Probleme. Aber diesmal versuchen Sie zu HÖREN!
ahahahah look how upset pointing out you're a censorious idiot made you drama llama
ahahahahaahaahahajaj
YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO SPELL LLAMA AHAHAHAHAHA
"Fressen"
AND IT'S ESSEN AHAHAHAHAHAAHAAH
NOW CRY MORE DRAMA LLAMA AHAHAHAHAH
IT'S "A" NOT "AN"
AHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH
So you don't deny trying to have him censored.
No wonder everyone mocks you.
"So you don’t deny trying to have him censored."
I tell it that it is a piece of shit on a regular basis. I have never called the cops on this piece of shit, and asked the cops to silence the piece of shit. Trying to communicate with the piece of shit is generally a waste of time, anyway. Correct the lies of the piece of shit, and the turd will keep right on repeating the same lies anyway.
And now we have a shit brisket that wants to join Tulpa-shit! Go figure!
Not just rank. Trump brings a lot of eyeballs to Twitter. Business-wise, it would be crazy to suspend his account.
Good point!
enough about your head
Seattle police chief has *cancelled* the planned 9pm curfew at the urging of protestors...
Cuck.
Ugly as it is, maybe that is the right epithet for people like that police chief?
Who runs your fucking city, clown? You or the rioters? Guess we have an answer.
Graciousness is a totally foreign concept to you, isn’t it?
As foreign as the right to private property and self-defense are to you.
Never said a word expressing opposition to private property or self-defense.
The guy showed some graciousness about a curfew. Violating a curfew is neither property theft or personal assault.
Many of the same people bitching about Mattis' statement were very vocally opposed to people being told to stay in because of COVID-19. Now they are suddenly on the side of following curfews.
Sheesh.
"Whose streets? OUR streets!"
"Bend the knee!"
Anybody want to take a guess why protests are suddenly becoming increasingly peaceful?
Because we finally have "Justice for George"?
Because everything's already been burned or looted?
They've been thoroughly infiltrated by Tea Party old farts?
Tired of getting gassed, tired of getting shot with pepper balls, run out of places to loot.
Are they actually becoming more peaceful? Or is the media merely choosing to report more on the peaceful protestors and less on the violence? It takes a lot to get journalists to let go of "if it bleeds, it leads" but arguably they now see it as damaging their own interests.
The MSM reads Nick Gillespie op-eds?
It's not like a Cop just got stabbed in the neck and 2 others shot last night in NYC. Those were peaceful stabbings.
They were peacefully stabbed. If it's not in Mother Jones, it didn't happen.
"Or is the media merely choosing to report more on the peaceful protestors and less on the violence?"
As ideologically driven as newsrooms are these days, in their attempts to emulate Pravda, I wonder if it's a lot of what you mentioned?
Whole lot of sirens and helicopters last night, for nothing going on in the news here.
True Sacramento NBC turned cameras away from violence and stated we will not show violence anymore because children might be shocked. So yes no more reporting on the bad stuff just flowers and kittens from now on
All the outside agitators from Russia have been deported?
It's the only country that the dems don't want open borders with. OBL is still waiting for the final stance from Koch Media.
They're not fond of sharing them with white South Africans either.
Hitler?
I forget how this game is played.
They've already destroyed most of the shit downtown, and they don't want to risk getting shot in the suburbs and rural areas.
There was a video of a protest through a suburban area that featured a bunch of the residents standing along the parade route with AR-15s. The protest was silent as the grave and no violent outbursts.
Funny how these protesters apparently get triggered into violence by the appearance of cops in tacticool gear, but a bunch of normies standing by the side of the road with "military-style assault rifles" at the ready results in total docility.
Arms keep the peace.
Because we aren't cops and we don't have rules of engagement. You start something, we're gonna view the whole group as a threat and engage accordingly.
This.
I don’t live in a place susceptible to protests or looting. I have literally 0 fear of it. But in a theoretical world where rioter and looters want to expand to areas like mine, a whole lot of people would be shot in short order. I know that I’d certainly have a zero tolerance policy on people invading my property.
People often wonder why things like theft or violent crime don’t happen with as much frequency as in cities. “Because most people out here own guns” would probably be near the top of the list.
Yep. Same here, there was some looting for one night nearby, but overall it's been relatively peaceful here. Of course, our state is pretty conservative, and the governor wasn't afraid to call in the NG straight away.
Cops have rules of engagement?
sure, if you resist, then they engage
They're out of shape?
No more free Nikes?
My guess is looting fatigue, and all the best loot having been looted. But I’m just guessing.
Don’t tell me, though — you KNOW, right.
Depends.
The one in Grand Rapids became peaceful after the local police chief came out and marched with them and talked about changes.
Flint's actually never turned violent because on the first day the county sheriff took off his riot gear and marched with them.
Oh wait, shit, you weren't looking for nuance were you?
Having Type A blood was linked to a 50 percent increase in the likelihood that a patient would need to get oxygen or to go on a ventilator, according to the new study.
China engineered this thing to go after Type A personalities? Like the president? That's my takeaway.
Peer Review, goddammit:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/03/covid-19-surgisphere-who-world-health-organization-hydroxychloroquine
Surgisphere: governments and WHO changed Covid-19 policy based on suspect data from tiny US company
Surgisphere, whose employees appear to include a sci-fi writer and adult content model, provided database behind Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine hydroxychloroquine studies
The Guardian’s investigation has found:
A search of publicly available material suggests several of Surgisphere’s employees have little or no data or scientific background. An employee listed as a science editor appears to be a science fiction author and fantasy artist. Another employee listed as a marketing executive is an adult model and events hostess.
The company’s LinkedIn page has fewer than 100 followers and last week listed just six employees. This was changed to three employees as of Wednesday.
While Surgisphere claims to run one of the largest and fastest hospital databases in the world, it has almost no online presence. Its Twitter handle has fewer than 170 followers, with no posts between October 2017 and March 2020.
Until Monday, the “get in touch” link on Surgisphere’s homepage redirected to a WordPress template for a cryptocurrency website, raising questions about how hospitals could easily contact the company to join its database.
Desai has been named in three medical malpractice suits, unrelated to the Surgisphere database. In an interview with the Scientist, Desai previously described the allegations as “unfounded”.
In 2008, Desai launched a crowdfunding campaign on the website Indiegogo promoting a wearable “next generation human augmentation device that can help you achieve what you never thought was possible”. The device never came to fruition.
Desai’s Wikipedia page has been deleted following questions about Surgisphere and his history, first raised in 2010.
The media was good to point out the Lancet connection. But most of the reports seemed to ignore the other studies that utilized the Surgisphere data. That needs to be discussed more loudly.
If Reason had a science reporter they might have caught this
He wrote about it yesterday.
ahahahahah it was a fucking joke you aspie fuck ahahahahahaha
"Adult Video News (AVN) announced this week that it would end news and awards categories for 'interracial' porn"
I often talk about Reason.com's benefactor Charles Koch. But what about that less prominent benefactor, John "Buttman" Stagliano — will this affect his business?
"Black Dicks Slamming White Chicks Matter"
What's ironic about this new policy - and quite unsurprising- is that it will hurt black male porn actors the most.
According to an article in Business Week a couple of years ago, IR porn is one of the more lucrative categories. Ban that and you likely put more black men out of work.
Is there any liberal SJW policy that doesn't hurt minorities more than whites?
Ban that and you likely put more black men out of work.
I'm no fan of participation trophies but I'm not sure how eliminating an award specifically oriented around honoring multiple races equally advances racial equality.
I suppose if the awards were dominated by Greek/Italian and Czech/Russian 'interracial' couples/groups it might make sense, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the case.
Meanwhile, gay dating and hookup app Grindr announced that it will stop letting users sort potential partners by ethnicity.
But it will still permit abbreviations like "BBC", right?
(Asking for a friend.)
Soon they will force people to date who they get to date. Kind of like china
What better way to ensure equality!
Yes. And since sex appeal is not equally distributed, or equally accessible to others, a new government agency will assign sex duties to make sure we all get our fair share.
Top one percent, look out!
Harrison Bergeron, call your office!
Wouldn't the easier solution be to require all people wear a makeup job and fat suit to look like Charlize Theron in Monster at all times?
When will they address the racism of allowing people to sort by gender, height, eye color, income, employment status or geographic location?
Sort of like, "hug a Chinaman to show you're not racist," only it will be "fuck these hot black guys to show you're not racist."
Or, Years 2 & 3 at college, but I repeat myself.
How are you supposed to complete the race circuit if you can't select by race?

There, Fink’s PRC paean ironically followed his reiteration of his firm’s commitment to “ESG”—environment, social, and governance.
ESG is a proxy for progressivism. BlackRock seeks to impose it on virtually every company—at least in the U.S.—through its immense reach into global markets and leverage over its participants. BlackRock is also an adherent to the newfound principle among major multinational corporations—including those in high finance, technology, and industrials—of “stakeholder capitalism.” Rather than focusing on maximizing value to shareholders, BlackRock and its Big Business allies now claim to wish to serve a broader array of constituents, through fealty to ESG.
...An even greater cynic might see in the relationship between ESG and China something more treacherous. For if purported violators of ESG principles in America are to be shunned, while actual violators of ESG principles in China are to be embraced, cui bono?
Certainly not the American people. We will see fewer and lower-paying jobs as well as subpar returns in our retirement accounts if businesses prioritize progressivism over profit. After all, the more employees a company has, the greater the odds of running afoul of ESG principles. Particularly, industries like energy—which, pre-coronavirus, had been among the biggest drivers of U.S. employment and economic growth—will bear the worst brunt of the ESG inquisition.
China will be well positioned to pick up the slack, promising higher returns—at least on paper—perhaps in the very industries that ESG will gut in America. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the de facto primary stakeholder in every business that operates there, will reap the benefits of a playing field further tilted against the West by the West’s own hand.
From the protest today - officers walk with protesters down East Baltimore street...
Nice break from pulling over motorists to give them, as a reward for good driving, ice cream (and a quick look around the interior).
It's all good until some outside agitator yells "It's a trap!"
Sad thing is, at some point there might be an actual infectious disease to worry about more than C19, but nobody will believe these assholes. This letter will become manslaughter down the road.
https://slate.com/technology/2020/06/protests-coronavirus-pandemic-public-health-racism.html
There has been a lot of concern on how the protests over the past several days may produce a wave of coronavirus cases. This discussion is often framed as though the pandemic and protests in support of black lives are wholly separate issues, and tackling one requires neglecting the other. But some public health experts are pushing people to understand the deep connection between the two.
Facing a slew of media requests asking about how protests might be a risk for COVID-19 transmission, a group of infectious disease experts at the University of Washington, with input from other colleagues, drafted a collective response. In an open letter published Sunday, they write that “protests against systemic racism, which fosters the disproportionate burden of COVID-19 on Black communities and also perpetuates police violence, must be supported.”
The letter and the experts who signed it make a case for viewing the protests not primarily as something that could add to cases of coronavirus (though they might) but as a tool to promote public health in and of themselves. Protests address “the paramount public health problem of pervasive racism,” the letter notes. “We express solidarity and gratitude toward demonstrators who have already taken on enormous personal risk to advocate for their own health, the health of their communities, and the public health of the United States.”

George Floyd’s funeral is expected to have hundreds or thousands of attendees, including high profile politicians like Biden. Meanwhile people have not been allowed to go to their own family members funerals because attendance was capped due to COVID.
If you really want to show your support for George Floyd, you will burn down the funeral home.
Did anyone else notice that just 10 days ago, it was too risky to have the House in D.C. so Pelosi forced through Proxy Voting... yet there she was on the streets of D.C. just yesterday marching.
"...yet there she was on the streets of D.C. just yesterday marching."
Wonder how many around her were her security people?
The letter and the experts who signed it make a case for viewing the protests ... as a tool to promote public health
Once again--Would someone *kindly* define "public health"?
It's like the Nazgul's definition of "public use". It is whatever the government says it is.
a group of infectious disease experts at the University of Washington
Are these the fucks at IHME whose models have been total and complete shit, and were the basis for implenting the lockdowns at the beginning of April?
Protests address “the paramount public health problem of pervasive racism,” the letter notes. “We express solidarity and gratitude toward demonstrators who have already taken on enormous personal risk to advocate for their own health, the health of their communities, and the public health of the United States.”

Gee, Maura, it would be a shame if some protester thinks your house would be a good place for a forest.
‘America Is Burning. But That’s How Forests Grow’
It's about time someone explained the wildfires to those idiots in California.
How compassionate! The AG doesn't want people catching COVID-19 while locked up (or is it down?)!
Evil. Not misguided or mistaken, but intentionally evil.
The courts won't punish them, and they're practically invulnerable from being removed from office.

Amidst skyrocketing unemployment, it's clear what needs to be done. We need to implement the Koch / Reason policy of unlimited, unrestricted immigration and abolish the minimum wage.

I'm kinda surprised [the NYC rioters] haven't tried a run at MoMA yet, hell you could stroll out of there with $50 million rolled up in your hand
I recommend looting the paintings over the sculptures. LOL at a looter trying to carry off some multi-ton Richard Serra piece.
Your average looter doesn't have the connections to sell a stolen Monet.
The looter would destroy it trying to get it out of the frame.
An amazing amount of monetary value in those works of art. At least in the billions of dollars, maybe even tens of billions at museums like MoMA or the Guggenheim.
Do the have the black-market connections necessary to find a buyer?

So, maybe he chooses Stacy Abrams, who has offered subtle and cryptic hints that perhaps she is interested in the job. Governor Abrams (D-Diabetes) would be a great choice in my view, but I’m biased because I want Trump to win.
This leaves the politically and otherwise flexible Kamala Harris.
This will leave a huge (black?) hole in the runway model world.
He has no choice but to pick Harris or Abrams now. Ayanna Pressly's another possibility--de facto Squad member from a safe blue district who's not nearly as exceptional or overtly racist as the other three members, and spends most of her time actually trying to represent the people in her district instead of chasing photo ops.
I think Val Demings would be a far more dangerous pick for him. Though no way a former police chief cuts it with the Lootie wing of the Democratic Party.
Pressley is out, she has no hair to sniff.
Doesn't she wear a wig, though? A little perfume, and ol' Joey will come a snortin'.
More bad economic news.

Nation's Racists Repent After Reading Statement On Equality From Hidden Valley Ranch

I will trust Hidden Valley when the stop making Greek and Italian salad dressing. We are long past such ethnic stereotypes.
General Mattis is entitled to his opinion, as is any American. While I understand his perspective, I simply disagree.
Rioters and looters are completely incompatible with civilized society. Shoot them.
In the meantime, I am organizing a bunch of my Orthodox brethren to go 'wilding' so we can congregate together and pray in a minyan without being forcibly dispersed by Phailing Phil Murphy. Our version of 'wilding' will be dancing around a Torah scroll, singing praises to God.
Will we get arrested?
Whether he intended to or not, Mattis unfortunately comes off in his statement as if he’s copying the mainstream media conflating the peaceful protestors (which of course are the majority of people on the streets) with the communist anarchic-terrorists.
Given his sterling track record, I’m going to operate in good faith and assume that, unlike the mainstream media, Matt Welch, ENB, and all the PFLs, Mattis does NOT support the anarchies-terrorists. But he really should be much more careful and specific about what he says and the message he intends to convey.
I agree. General Mattis is an honorable man who has served this country with distinction and honor. I love the fact that in this country, he has the freedom to express his mind openly, without worry of any kind of meaningful reprisal. He can say his piece, and that is that.
I am pretty sure if one of those asshole rioters/looters showed up on his doorstep threatening to mess up his stuff, he'd haul out the 45 and put an end to that nonsense.
Mattis reveals himself to be just another ruling caste shill, who speaks out against "divisiveness" by being incredibly divisive
The left promised that electing Trump would result in violence.
He was elected, the left provided the violence.
Do you think you get to the rank of General without buying in to the state and it's mission in totality? How would it be possible for him to be a General and not either BE the ruling class or it's shill?
The shilling is voluntary.
The other stuff, of course
Will we get arrested?
Depends on whether you decide to call yourselves the "Sons of Bar Kokhba" or not.
Shoot them? How many accidental on-site executions of innocents are you ready to accept from our new state sponsored legions of Judge Dredds? Will this ability of the state increase or decrease individual liberty? Will this make government more accountable or less accountable? Will it decrease tensions or make even more people want to blow up buildings that otherwise would not?
Are you evil or merely retarded? If you answer these questions correctly, you're evil.
Just shooting them is a terrible solution but better than chaos.
Having a government that can execute people on site without trial with impunity is worse than chaos. I don't see this one as even being close. This is another situation where conservatives are blindly endorsing policies that will unquestionably be used against them in the future. You know the state is overwhelmingly populated by progressives. You're a dissident to them, they'll come after you.
Are you so naive to think they won't do that as soon as they think they can get away with it?
Are you talking to me or John? I'm literally saying they will do it when they think they can get away with it. I can't think of a single power the government has given itself that isn't completely and frivolously abused within a generation of it's implementation. What ever the power's original intent, that's never what it's used for in the long run.
Innocents? On Day 9 of rioting? Or at night?
Darwin had something to say about people too stupid to figure out they're in a riot at that point. I believe in the liberty of a property owner to defend their property and life in the midst of a riot. If that means people in the middle of the riot, even if they aren't actually throwing a brick at that moment catch a bullet, then that's what happens.
Demonstrate peacefully during the day. Your group starts looting, you're no longer a peaceful demonstrator if you elect to stay with the horde.
Sorry I believe in consistency. There are plenty of people at these things that are peaceful and have committed no crimes. Many of them are probably just as pissed at the rioter's as we are and would happily acknowledge that those people are criminals. There's plenty of videos of protesters grabbing the thugs out of the crowd and throwing them straight to the cops. Saying that the cops get to do literally whatever is needed to stop the bad actors who are the vast minority is absurd.
The police need to try to protect the innocents at least as much as they need to protect the property of the people who's lives the burned buildings represent. Most of those people are genuinely protesting peacefully. We may think that they're misdiagnosing the problem and the way they're going about getting change makes zero sense. That's fine. I do have some sympathy for the argument that allowing Antifa to dictate when crowds have to disburse via their heckler's veto is bullshit. The rioters are neither the fault of the protesters or the cops. They are individual criminal actors and only those actors deserve to be treated as that way.
Is it going to be an incredibly difficult job for the cops to draw the lines and get the right people? Yes. Are they going to make some mistakes and get some innocent people hurt or killed? It sure seems inevitable and they need to own it and take responsibility if they want to save face with the community. I don't believe for one second they should just do nothing. This sucks. It's incredibly complicated, nuanced and I can't imagine the pressure and the fear the cops are facing right now. They're still human individuals like the protesters and the other side loses sight of that.
What I will not tolerate is bullshit like "just shoot 'em and if some innocent people die, too bad so sad." It's a stupid meatheaded and borderline nihilistic response. If you think you can take that position and still try and represent yourself as any strip of libertarian, you can go fuck yourself. If you don't understand that one of the cornerstones of the philosophy is that it's absurd that any group of people get to have that kind of power over life and death, than you are helpless.
Agreed. We should leave the nihilism and perverse worship of death and destruction to Reason.
It seems the mask is slipping for a lot of people this past week.

Portland protest leader Micah Rhodes avoids prison for sex abuse
https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2018/07/portland_protest_leader_micah.html
For the second time in recent weeks, Portland protest leader Micah Isaiah Rhodes stood before an Oregon judge ready to go to prison for having sexual contact with an underage teen.
And for the second time, an Oregon judge agreed to veer from state sentencing recommendations and give Rhodes five years of probation.
Multnomah County Circuit Judge Jerry Hodson on Monday said he wouldn’t send Rhodes to prison for two to 2 ½ years because he believes Rhodes earnestly is trying to change despite the prosecution's arguments to the contrary.
“I can tell that you’re sincere and I can tell that you’ve grown a lot over the last couple of years,” Hodson said as Rhodes wiped away tears.
I'll bet his victim has changed more.
https://thepostmillennial.com/revealed-antifa-has-a-pedophile-problem
The Burkean’s actions directed significant attention towards Ireland’s official Antifa organization, Antifascist Ireland, a group that has come under fire in the past for the history of its alleged founding member and leading figurehead, Pat Corcoran—a convicted pedophile.
In February of 2020, seven Russian antifa members were sentenced to 6-18 years in prison for planning bombings intended to disrupt the 2018 Russian presidential elections.
Of the seven, one of the principal figures, Arman Sagynbaev, was revealed to have a disturbing history with women and girls.
Micah Isaiah Rhodes of Portland’s Resistance was arrested in 2014 and in 2015 for sexually abusing a minor girl and minor boy. During his trials, the county Sheriff revealed that Rhodes had an inappropriate history with minors dating to his youth. At 14, Rhodes was caught sexually abusing a 9 year old boy, and at 15, Rhodes was caught with three much younger boys.
Despite his history, Rhodes was spared all prison time as the judge claimed Rhodes was “trying to change.”
If you are a victim of violent crime, you will spend more time and money recovering from your loss, than your attacker will be punished by the criminal justice system.
That was true before things like 'bail reform', 'decriminalization of theft', and 'sentencing reform' became trendy. Now? LOL, embrace the Decline.
The people in Portland must want it this way.
“I can tell that you’re sincere and I can tell that you’ve grown a lot over the last couple of years,” Hodson said as Rhodes wiped away tears.

Gun Purchases Skyrocket During Coronavirus Lockdown Orders

NICS figures [showed] year-over-year increases of 80 percent in March and 69 percent in April 2020. These strong increases led to more than 6.5 million NSSF-adjusted background checks in the first four months of 2020, up 48 percent from 4.4 million during the same period in 2019.
Protesters are "rightly demanding" a country that commits to "equal justice under the law," wrote Mattis.
No.
Committing to "equal justice" is meaningless, since justice is subjective and varies by person and date. It also bends towards specific narratives and gets quickly subsumed by political agenda and desired outcomes.
How about the more realistic (and Constitutionally supported) equal treatment under the law?

I hope all Americans wake up on election day and realize we are better off without any of em. I am hopeless that way.
Does the Green Party have a candidate this year? Progs luv seeing 3rd-party candidates siphon off their votes. If I'm going to waste my time voting, it might as well be for a good chuckle
It's an easy weather vane. It's a good starting assumption that anything that Reason supports is anti-liberty.
All joking aside, I'm getting pretty scared of election day. It doesn't matter who wins, it's going to be really, really ugly. Considering that wall to wall populism is taking over both parties, it would seem libertarians are the biggest losers. There's only two things that matter in American politics anymore. How to make the club bigger, and who gets to swing it.
Why yes, one side encourages looting and rioting and arson. The other side cuts taxes, actually engages in criminal justice reform and believes in protecting lives and property.
Truly Charybdis and Scylla.
I never said they were equivalent. If you don't think that there's an element of the right that's willing to break and burn some shit if Trump goes down in the middle of these kind of unemployment numbers, you're not paying attention. Maybe I'll eat my words, I hope I do actually.
"I never said they were equivalent."
I can't imagine why anyone would get that impression, when your prior post said, "It doesn’t matter who wins, it’s going to be really, really ugly." Both-sides-ism is pretty damned lazy when we have 3 plus years track record to go on for Trump and for the people propping up Biden. Trump's an asshole populist who's mean to people on Twitter, but mostly wants you to hang onto your own money and property, using them how you see fit. Besides trading with China or hiring an illegal.
The other guys? What part of their heavy-handed continuation of lockdowns, support of garbage like the Green New Deal, and tacit encouragement of these rioters, makes you think they value liberty in the slightest?
Riot goals: total socialism that Reason supposedly opposes.
Riot results: support for any police/military response to restore order, which Reason supposedly opposes.
A pro-riot take is the stupidest position for free minds and free markets.

Rosenstein's comments amounted to a striking concession that law enforcement officials made mistakes as they scrutinized ties between Russia and Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. But even as he acknowledged the legitimacy of anger from Trump and his allies, he defended his appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller to lead the probe and affirmed his support for the conclusion that Russia interfered in the election but did not criminally conspire with associates of the Trump campaign.
“I do not consider the investigation to be corrupt, Senator, but I certainly understand the president’s frustration given the outcome, which was in fact that there was no evidence of conspiracy between Trump campaign advisers and Russians," Rosenstein said at a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee..."

What's up Peanuts, this is probably weird and I don't really care if you hate me or not, I just have a few things to say. I know most of you don't like me. Despise me probably. I've been not the nicest to some of you here and I want to apologize. I know it means nothing and some of you will probably hate me even more now, but I've realized some things recently that put life in perspective and I’m trying to make amends and come to terms with who I am.
This last week both of my parents died. My father was in the hospital for over 2 weeks with a severe case of Covid, we were not allowed to visit him. They put him on a vent for the last week and he passed away late last Thursday. We only found out after calling the hospital to check on him. The assholes didn't even call us to tell us.
Then on Monday the most fucked up thing in my entire life, my mother's apartment was broken into by a group of teens, she was robbed, gang raped at knifepoint and then stabbed over 70 times and shot in the head. No one, not even the fucking Orange Clown fucking deserves that.
I thought life couldn't get any worse. I feel like a fucking loser even telling you wingnuts this but fuck it I don't even know how to process all of this and I don't have anywhere else to say it. Hello Dave Weigel. I am deeply skeptical that a word of what you’re saying is true, but in the unlikely even that your parents in Delaware have both died, I’m sorry for your loss.
On another note, I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know because you admitted this to the world years ago, but you are obviously a person with severe mental illness.
The best and most appropriate thing you can do is to check yourself into a facility where professionals can take care of you and look after you before you hurt yourself, or far worse, other innocent people.
Why do you think David Weigel gave an iota of concern about this place, nevermind the autists and misanthropes that inhabit its website's comments section, about a tenth of a second after he got hired by the Post?
That he was hired by them, after gleefully participating in every one of the Journolist scandals, is merely further proof of the decline of journalism from finding and reporting news, to simply republishing propaganda.

I have a hard time believing you just because if that shit happened to your mother, it would be front-page news. That said, if this actually happened and just hasn't been reported on, you have my deepest sympathies and my prayers that you'll be able to get through these times. For what it's worth, Reason wouldn't be Reason if you weren't on here posting shit.
Holy Fucking Shit. Now Reason loves Mad Dog Mattis?
Isn't this the man who wanted to expand the US presence in Syria and resigned when he didn't get his way? Who wanted fight the war in Afghanistan to its bitter end? Who begged Congress for bigger defense budgets?
As I noted at the time when they accepted John Bolton's word as gospel last fall, there is no one Reason will not rehabilitate if it helps them make that nasty Orange Man look bad.
To be fair, Trump and his ass-lickers here were singing a completely different tune about Mattis when he was appointed, so it all balances out.
No one fellates the big state more than Reason.
Wasn't just Trump's fans either. A lot of folks who were on the fence or nervous about him when he got elected (and I'll admit I was one of them) thought that having Mattis on board would keep things above board.
I believe their logic is something along the lines of - the deep state is a horrific affront to liberty and the constitutionally protected rights of this nation's citizenry by being able to conduct massive secret government programs that spy on and in many cases result in the imprisonment and even murder of sovereign citizens of this and all nations around the world all with zero accountability to the voters OR their elected officials.
However, the only person in the government that seems interested in discussing this is worse because he tweets like a jackass.

Because public figures and the media keep using the word "protester" to talk about rioters, there is no good reason to assume they aren't telling us to support the rioters when they say we should support the "protesters". The resulting hit to their credibility is a self-inflicted wound--just when I didn't think their credibility could get any worse. It could be avoided entirely if they'd just use the word "rioter" to mean "rioter".
Peaceful rioter? Who peacefully shot and stabbed and ran over multiple people in the last week and peacefully burned down 300 buildings in MSP/STP, with love. And peacefully assaulted an NBC news crew because they needed to be shown peace. And love. ANd lovingly threw peaceful bricks through systemically racist windows to let in the peace and justice and love. And peacefully blocked the systemically racist fire department from responding to a peaceful fire lovingly set to liberate the child inside from the systemic racism outside where the peaceful fire wasn't peacefully burning to spread the peace. And Love.
AWFUL: A man shouting ‘no justice, no peace’ abused a puppy on live TV in Memphis

Subsequent news said the puppy was strangled to death. Fucking garbage person.
>>Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis
who?
Actor Zachary Levi spent the day on Twitter yesterday defending libertarianism and third-party voting.
Best Captain Marvel.
He's also fictionally banging Mrs. Maisel, so that deserves a high five.
The Progressive Prosecutor Project
How and why the nation's crime busters are becoming criminal enablers
https://www.commentarymagazine.com/articles/andrew-mccarthy/the-progressive-prosecutor-project/
The key to understanding the Machiavellian brilliance of the Progressive Prosecutor Project is this: As a matter of constitutional law, no legislature or court has the power to order a prosecutor to charge any crime against any person. In our system, prosecution is exclusively an executive call. Practically speaking, short of voting a rogue district attorney out of office, there is no remedy for abusive discretionary omissions—decisions not to prosecute. To be sure, if a prosecutor performs some affirmative illegal act while enforcing the law, there are legal remedies available—motions to suppress evidence, lawsuits against government, potentially even prosecution. But omissions are a different story. It is nigh impossible to force prosecutors to take enforcement action. Thus, a willful district attorney has enormous power to install non-prosecution as the default policy.
Realizing this, the left’s social-justice warriors have grasped that the control of prosecutorial power may be the most effective route to rapid societal transformation. It is transformation driven not by law, logic, or a half-century’s empirical data on offense behavior and policing methods, but by cultural Marxist narratives: the criminal-justice system and its law-enforcement agencies as a superstructure reifying America’s pervasive racism, xenophobia, and forcible oppression of The Other.
I keep saying it: the Syria model
They are practicing domestically what was put into play overseas
No more "interracial" porn.
yeah THIS is the problem.
I checked Wikipedia...apparently Mathis wanted to resign as SecDef because Trump didn't have a big enough war boner...then Trump fired him before the date the resignation was to take effect.
Disgruntled former employee.
"At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors."
Abraham Lincoln may disagree with that.
Interestingly enough, Lincoln did not use the 1807 insurrection act.
These fine gentlemen, on the other hand -
Jefferson
Jackson
Grant
Hayes
Cleveland
Wilson
Roosevelt
Eisenhower
Kennedy
Johnson
Bush - did.
So yeah, Trump will be the crazy one.
Oh, FFS: https://twitter.com/i/status/1268363871661838338
"OK, we'll just spray 'Black Lives Matter' on your car. Or are you a racist?"
How does one unify shop owners and the people who are destroying the shop? Mattis should come back to earth.
"You cannot negotiate with your executioner"
Bail set at up to $1 million for three ex-Minneapolis police officers charged with abetting alleged murder of George Floyd
Why such a high bail. I thought we were switching to release without bail. Are they worried the ex-officers will join a police department somewhere else and commit more abuse? I guess they will have to stay in jail and catch the covid.
Where are all the Hollywood types who post bail for folks?
Did you hear about the dumb shit who got shot in NY? The cop who shot him was in a car that had just been rammed by another car. This looter had a hammer in his waistband so only the head was showing, was getting on his knees with his hands "above the waistband" near the car that had rammed the cop. Oh, and 3 other cops had been ambushed earlier that night, one stabbed in the neck and 2 more shot with the first cop's gun.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes
I'm disgusted with former military and neocons acting so woke. Iraq civilians didn't seem to matter to much to this Mattis. Read Generation Kill and you can debate if his strategy led to a lot more Iraqi civilians being killed. And there never was a declaration of war (forget this bullish&t about a resolution of force). Like Bush this guy has no leg to stand on to lecture Trump.
As for the new "world"..get used to it cosmo libertarians..everything will be decided upon based on the group you belong to and the proportional results..college entrance, jobs, promotions, and even application of the law...I honestly can't wait when the "equality" mob comes for the media, academia, and of course hollywood given how "unequal" it is with some groups being way over represented
A solder does his job of killing people who are not Americans, so he cannot express concern for Americans? It's kinda the essence of his job description.
Too local?

Given that about 1/3 of Americans are either socialists or progressives/fascists, I consider that a good thing: I don't want to be "united" with them.
This is Quisling advice. Trump needs to send in the army and start killing terrorists (they are not protestors) wholesale. Especially in states like New York where the police are letting them go -- with no bail! -- as soon as they catch them.
It's Civil War 2 and the shooting has started. I'm on the side of civilization. Mattis is not.
"Equal justice" means they get to rape, loot and murder you if you disagree with them and/or are white and insufficiently obsequious.
Wonder how many of the folks who owned these businesses in Minneapolis wish the police had dominated the protesters a bit more.

Good judges for the most part.
Sentence reduction for prisons.
Reduction of Foreign Aid.
Hell, he even offered no trade restrictions to all the trade partners in NATO, granted they rejected that in favor of negotiated deals.
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
XERXES: Brought peace.
REG: Oh. Peace? Shut up!
He was asked right after that statement if he was joking. He said no. He wasn't sarcastic.
And that definitely wasn't sarcasm too!
Pathetic. They will buy any lame walkback Trump makes.
Trump speculates on live TV about injecting bleach, his face clearly beaming with pride at how is more brilliant than the doctors. He gets mocked, gets his feathers ruffled, and next day makes the most transparent, lame walk back that he was being sarcastic.
And Trump defenders here actually repeat it.
Trump’s latest. He gets mocked as “Bunker Boy”, so he comes back a couple days later and claims he was only taking a tour.
So the subject was the 30,000 emails Hillary deleted from her personally run server.
One of the points people were making about that server is that it had probably been hacked by every foreign government that does such things.
"Maybe Russia can find Hillary's deleted emails."
The joke being that, since Russia had (presumably) already hacked Clinton's server years ago, before she deleted the subpoenaed emails, that they'd still be present in Russia's copy of them.
Thus Russia could FIND them - as in, find them among items they already had possession of.
You, of course, already know this and disingenuously want others to believe that Trump was asking Russia to obtain deleted emails by hacking AFTER THEY WERE DELETED.
It's incredibly stupid if you take just a second to think about, which is why you have to keep repeating the lie in true Nazi fashion
