Michigan's Emergency Stay-at-Home Order Is a Hot Mess. Now 4 Sheriffs Say They Won't Be Enforcing Parts of It.
"We question some restrictions that she has imposed as overstepping her executive authority."

Four sheriffs in Michigan announced Wednesday that they will not enforce parts of the restrictive COVID-19 stay-at-home order recently issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D), after the officers concluded that Whitmer may be pushing the bounds of her position.
"We write today to inform the public for our respective counties of our opposition to some of Governor Whitmer's executive orders," the four sheriffs wrote in a letter posted to Twitter. "While we understand her desire to protect the public, we question some restrictions that she has imposed as overstepping her executive authority."
The letter is signed by Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich, Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel, Mainstee County Sheriff Ken Falk, and Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. "We will deal with every case as an individual situation and apply common sense in assessing the apparent violation," they said, emphasizing the importance of proper social distancing but questioning the repressive nature of the directive.
Whitmer's order generated a great deal of pushback. It includes a prohibition on large retailers selling allegedly nonessential items, such as paint and outdoor supplies, meaning stores like Home Depot had to tape off those sections from customers. Lawncare services have been temporarily shuttered. With very few exceptions, the order prohibits people from traveling between residences, even to their cottages in the northern part of the state, where there are few COVID-19 cases. Residents of other states, however, may still travel to such properties in Michigan if permitted by their respective home states. Individuals may not use motorboats, but they are authorized to use boats without motors.
The order bans "public and private gatherings of any kind," yet it still allows for the sale of lottery tickets, the proceeds of which go toward funding K-12 education in the state.
Whitmer's order comes as her political profile continues to rise. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden recently confirmed that he has added her to his shortlist for Vice President. Michigan residents seem less impressed. A slew of protesters descended on the state capitol in Lansing today, disregarding social distancing guidelines in what they called "Operation Gridlock."
"[Whitmer] has created a vague framework of emergency laws that only confuse Michigan citizens," the sheriffs wrote. "Each of us took an oath to uphold and defend the Michigan Constitution, as well as the U.S. Constitution, and to ensure that your God given rights are not violated. We believe we are the last line of defense in protecting your civil liberties."

Who elected this shiksa!
Democrats.
They deserve what they are getting.
Sure. But what about the rest of them?
I deserve it?? Are you fucking serious??? I didn't vote for this idiot!!
Oh, please!!! The protesters in front of the Michigan State House are putting everybody at risk, including themselves, by not letting people who work at the hospitals get to work, and thereby costing ordinary people their lives. These protesters are making an already bad situation worse, and the police should've been out in force in preventing this protest from happening. Regardless of what other people say or think, Governor Whitmer did the right thing by implementing the Stay-At-Home order in the State of Michigan.
First, quit getting your news from CNN. Nobody died or missed work and nobody was blocking a hospital entrance. BTW, which are "ordinary people" vs extraordinary people?
Second, be sure to use your straight arm salute and say "Heil" when mentioning Herr Gouverneurin.
People here are really missing the big point -- the coronavirus “pandemic” is a fraud, an invisible, all-purpose enemy to which the government can attribute any dangers it wants to frighten and control us.
The international corporate elite that runs things behind the scenes has turned an illness no more dangerous than the common flu into a pretext for an enormous expansion of government power and an enormous transfer of resources -- literally, trillions of dollars -- from the citizens to the corporate elite.
We are being lied to every step of the way -- just look at all of the videos of empty hospitals in the alleged “epicenters” of the pandemic. . .
There is no legitimacy to any of it. The masks, the “social distancing”, the “self-isolation”, the shutdowns, the lockdowns, the restrictions on assemblies and groups -- none of that is to keep us safe, but all of it is to condition us to accept mandatory vaccination, more government control, more regimentation, and more handouts to the corporate elite.
The coronavirus charade is no different from previous virus panics -- SARS, MERS, Swine Flu, Zika -- only now the people at the top think we are divided enough, stupid enough, and weak enough to submit to a massive acceleration of the ongoing transfer of power and wealth to them. Sadly, it appears that they are correct.
Many of us still believe -- despite so much historical and contemporary evidence to the contrary -- that the government and the corporate media do not lie, especially about the big things. In reality, the government and the corporate media lie about everything -- especially about the big things.
The conduct of these four sheriffs indicates there are parts of Michigan -- the left-behind, can't-keep-up parts -- that might as well be in Mississippi, Wyoming, Oklahoma, West Virginia, or Alabama.
The freer states of America. Unlike democrat conclaves of bootlickers where Trump will start taking their electoral votes. 2020 is the best year.
Think of the 89 year old children, you heartless, money-grubbing jerk!
Free of advanced degrees. Free of good jobs. Free of valuable real estate. Free of strong schools. Free of modern, successful communities. Free of reason, science, and progress.
Stop talking about Detroit, you racist, they're doing the best they can.
And Chicago.
Don't forget Baltimore.
And St Louis, Hartford, Minneapolis, New Orleans, San Bernardino, Oakland, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Buffalo, Gary...
You do realize that some of the top engineering schools and research schools are in states like Idaho and Montana? That real estate is cheaper because a lower cost of living? That many of the "good" jobs are moving to these states? And as for advanced degrees, it really depends on what the degrees are in.
He doesn’t realize anything outside of his programming.
Yeah....nothing remotely technical goes on in Huntsville, Alabama like MoFos smarter than KKKirkland making rockets
Which "top research school" is in Idaho? Which "top engineering school" is in Montana?
With respect to advanced degrees, Idaho is 43rd, Montana 33rd.
The chart for the backwaters I named:
Alabama 41st
Mississippi 48th
Oklahoma 44th
West Virginia 49th
Wyoming 39th
Congratulations, Montana -- you're at the top of the dumbass pledge class!
"...With respect to advanced degrees,.."
Asshole bigot are absolutely smitten with certificates!
Run that again for degrees per capita for engineering the physical sciences and business..the rest of "advanced degrees" are just a shit show...Masters in "Education"...ha ha ha...can you use crayons and playdough? Stack rank the states again it might be a little different..you never know
Goddamn, you're dumb.
U of I: "U of I expends over $113.1 million in research dollars annually — top among public universities in Idaho. We are classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a higher research activity university."
The Montana Tech is in Butte.
I realize a provincial, slack-jawed, slope-foreheaded hicklib is hiding under his bed from Coronas that Go Coof In the Night right now, but maybe if you could think beyond your four or five stock phrases, you might get something right.
There are limits to a bot's capabilities.
Montana State University one of the top research universities in the nation. MSU and U of I are consistently ranked some of the best engineering public universities in the nation. MSU also has one of the top ranked range science departmenta. u of I has the first accredited range and wildland fire science program and a top ranked range science and microbiology department. Idaho State University has a first date anthropology school.
MSU also is classified as a higher research university by Carnegie Foundation.
first date anthropology
That could be a very valuable skill.
BSU in Boise is also highly ranked as a public university also.
actually here in little ol po dunk central missouri (rolla) we have one of the best engineering schools in the world.
You wouldn't last fifteen minutes in Montana.
What does that tell you oh holy one?
No...there are no top engineering schools in Idaho and Montana.....
Disagreeing with me should illegal.
The average democratic voter????
Can we start recruiting people and businesses to move to freer states? And encourage people more inclined to state control to continue moving to coastal enclaves? (And then let the horrible nature stuff they fear, like hurricanes and earthquakes, take care of things.)
Californezuela is already encouraging sensible people to leave, and to a lesser extent, attracting statist fools from elsewhere. The census results should be interesting.
I would never call Mississippi, Alabama, or Oklahoma the "freer" states of America.
Wyoming which has only one death, and that just happened this week. Yeah great example idiot.
We don't want to be like Wyoming where people are still mostly free and have had only one death and low infection numbers. Oh the horror.
Wyoming also has the lowest death per capita and the lowest CFR. Could it be that it makes more sense to take a targeted approach based on your demographics and population density? That is totally regressive isn't it Rev? Actually making informed decisions based upon your actual situation?
It seems reasonable to expect that the virus will mow through Wyoming, whose hospitals likely resemble a 1950s facility more than they do a modern health care operation. The virus likely will take more time to reach Wyoming because few people have any desire to travel to Wyoming, but there is no reason to expect that being white, rural, poorly educated, and backward provides immunity with respect to a virus.
So why hasn't it happened yet idiot? They reported their first positive around the same time as New York. Keep grasping moron. The virus has been in Wyoming since February and in Idaho, Utah, Montana, South Dakota and Colorado that long as well. All of which trade heavily with Wyoming. It won't take longer because it arrived about the same time. Buy a clue.
Virus has been global for a long time now. Recall that once testing was made available, it showed up very rapidly - everywhere - even on remote islands.... It was already there to begin with.
Also, just another FYI, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota are all in the lowest five in CFR and deaths per capita and all reported their first cases in February also. California and Washington state, despite being among the first states to find cases are lifting their restrictions (and Washington has almost no deaths outside the three counties that make up the greater Seattle area). Less population density equals less transmission and deaths. Compare Los Angeles to NYC.
Your ignorance of the state of Wyoming is exceeded by only by your ignorance of the realities of COVID19.
Yeah, nobody wants to see the Grand Tetons or Yellowstone or go ski at Jackson Hole.
And you make this bigoted assumption because... you're and stupid bigot? Why would hospitals in Wyoming be anything less than fully modern facilities? Because you're stupid?
Backwaters like Wyoming are resorting to because they can't get capable doctors to live there. Emergency medical services in some parts of America resemble third-world conditions. Nurses are treating heart attack patients. Orderlies volunteer for intubation attempts by show of hands.
"Backwaters like Wyoming are resorting to because they can’t get capable doctors to live there."
Get an education, starting with standard English, you bigoted rube.
I worked in rural medicine in Idaho for over seven years and in Alaska for five. We never had nurses treating heart attacks and who the fuck still uses orderlies? In my 17 years as a nurse I never once saw an orderly except on TV.
Yeah, but Kirkland gets all his edgmacation from Netflix, which as anyone can tell you has all kinds of orderlies. They can't lie about such things on Netflix, right? Meanwhile, this proves as I suspected, that this clown hasn't ventured more than 30 miles from his home because he's terrified of all the silly thoughts he's concocted over the years. Which explains years of daily posting on Reason.
"It seems reasonable to expect that the virus will mow through Wyoming, whose hospitals likely resemble a 1950s facility more than they do a modern health care operation."
Oh, good! A (sort of) prediction from the asshole bigot.
Now, asshole bigot, put a date on it, or STFU.
So I imagined all those rich coastal elites in Jackson Hole last time was out there? And I also guess the NYTs piece with the headline, Jackson Hole: Where the Rich Hide from Coronavirus, is just fake news?
The first paragraph of this article lists some of the knuckle-dragging yokels who exhibit a bizarre desire to travel to Wyoming.
I’m an arrogant douche
You listed 5 states for four sheriffs. Are you volunteering to be the fifth, and which state will you hide out in?
Your post indicates that whatever faith you claim to represent has not provided you with a truly valid understanding of and respect for your fellow man. The bigotry of your aspersions against five states in this Union is equal to racial or religious bigotry and demonstrate that your opinions are not just invalid but genuinely immoral.
Aw, it's not just the 5 states. Kirkland is terrified to go anywhere outside his urban shithole and believes all the hyperbole his brain can invent.
Compared to sophisticated ny, NJ & mass with half the cases in the entire country? They're number one.
Advanced degrees cause flu!
You really don't have any idea, do you? This area is a major tourism destination, not a backwater.
Well, finally.
Most states require the police to swear allegiance to the state constitution, not the current tyrant, and require the police to refuse illegal orders.
I just wish they had stated that flat out in their press release.
PS Will all citizens of MI please boycott the state lottery until this fascist resigns or is recalled? Thanks.
Did you know there actually are idiots who compare the remote and temporary possibility of a ticket for not staying at home, with whole families and communities being marched off to a camp to be murdered? And to protest the possibility of a ticket, they carry the flags of mass murder and slavery?
Yea Biden, pick her as VP and run in November with her representing months and months and months of government overreach everyone totally resents.
Joe Biden wasn't afraid of Corn Pop and he's not afraid of Donny the Punk in Chief either!
Afraid of Corn Pop?!? He's delighted with Corn Pop!
"...Donny the Punk in Chief..."
Why do lefty fucking ignoramuses spend half their lives inventing 'nicknames' which embarrass 1st-grade kids?
Because 1st grade kids have a greater capacity for intellectual growth and cognitive reasoning.
You think Biden invented Corn Pop?!? Say it ain't so, Sevo!
Just guaranteed another Trump win in Michigan. Democrats with their thumbs up their asses.
Trump's prospects in Michigan likely resemble his prospects in Wisconsin -- in which Americans waited in line during a pandemic to throw a Trump-endorsed clinger judge out of office.
That was all they waited in line to do? Or was it because of the Democratic primary and you are trying to prove causation out of correlation (and a not very strong one at that)?
Exactly!
Asshole bigot is grasping at any straw his tiny hands can hold.
I rub peanut butter on my balls and walk through dog kennels.
Heads, too.
We believe we are the last line of defense in protecting your civil liberties.
Second-to-last.
Third-to-last if you've set up your perimeter defenses correctly.
Keep your fields of fire properly cleared, and paint the range stakes regularly.
Remember the cops in North Carolina state that in an emergency your constitutional rights aren't essential and some law professor somewhere agreed that they can curb your constitutional rights during a declared emergency by the Governor.
Up until 2012 that was true. Fuck them if they act otherwise.
That happened yesterday in Raleigh.
She would be the ultimate crazy hookup chick. Wild night but you regret every moment from the next morning on.
>>the state leader may be overstepping the bounds of her position.
someone tell her Firestarter isn't one of the enumerated powers
Watching the news coverage of the Michigan protests right now, that looks like quite a few Jimmies being Rustled. Lots of Trump and Gadsden flags, it's lightly snowing/sleeting and it looks like you still have thousands (I'm guessing, based off of what I'm seeing) of folks out there for hours. The news is reporting that it's a complete gridlock for a mile+ radius of downtown Lansing, plus 100-200 protestors on the capitol building steps.
Mostly beat-up pickup trucks with Confederate flags, chewing tobacco bumper stickers, and GED-carrying drivers, I expect.
Can you be anything but an empty caricature? Really?
I think we all know the answer to that question at this point.
It’s too bad Reasonable is no longer working. I’d block his ass in a heartbeat.
Only the leaders have a GED. They read the rest of us the comic books.
You are obviously unaware of many things but one of the key elements of your ignorance is the nature of Trump supporters. They make more money than you. He won all of the income brackets of $50K and above. Clinton only won the lower income brackets.
Don't believe me - check the NYT exit polls from 2016.
"Mostly beat-up pickup trucks with Confederate flags, chewing tobacco bumper stickers, and GED-carrying drivers, I expect."
Asshole bigot's jealousy is palpable.
Hint, asshole bigot: They've got enough moxie to draw a line regarding what a government is allowed to do.
I'm sure that concept is a mystery to you; your knee pads are worn out.
Sometimes I begin to think that you're not a parody account, but then you post something like that...
"Expect", yes, because you are too afraid to look and see for yourself how mistaken you are.
I touch myself then sniff my fingers.
That scowling face. You just know she drinks wine from a box.
The eyes say “four kinds of crazy”.
Here I was thinking she bit down on a lemon for the photo.
If the box wine is cheap enough, the effect would be similar.
LMAO....thx for the laugh. 🙂
#HeilWhitmer
Did you know there actually are idiots who compare the remote and temporary possibility of a ticket for not staying at home, with whole families and communities being marched off to a camp to be murdered? And to protest the possibility of a ticket, they carry the flags of mass murder and slavery?
The government does not have the authority to ticket people for not staying at home. If you were a libertarian, you would understand that.
Nice opening photo. Is she trying to look like Trump?
"This is my serious face"
No, dude - that's what she looks like when she's _happy_...
I wish the sheriffs could have been more specific about the legal flaws in the gov's proclamation. I'm sure there are flaws, but they need to spell it out for us illiterate clingers.
Is it possible to get these guys to move to CA?
Why isn't she wearing a mask? Can't find one that says "Governor"?
Her mask loses it's significance when she's not carrying her leather riding crop and wearing the black leather knee high stiletto boots.
There are going to be a few thousand less Trump supporters at the polls in rural Michigan come November. They will be off collecting Darwin awards, because of days like today.
This virus is showing the world what it can do. In New York, coronavirus has started to deliver a Battle of Gettysburg toll, each week, for week after week—despite stringent isolation requirements which have been well-followed. Problem was, New York missed shutting down when they should have, by a matter of days. Now they must pay—by lining up the THERMO KING trailers, and burying unclaimed dead in mass graves, in trenches.
But Reason says, "Never mind," and goes for a series of stories chosen and edited to misinform the gullible—for no better reason than to push an outworn, failed ideology into the teeth of the facts. What a horrifying miscarriage of journalistic responsibility.
Do you know how many men were killed in Gettysburg? They were young not old and/or obese..in other words death was not around the corner for those poor men..like it is for many in NYC who are dying of this virus. The mistake was being politically correct..Cuomo should have just quarantined NYC two months ago...that is the issue not some rural town in central NY..
Titus, you are right to remind me about Gettysburg. Because I was talking about New York, I had the Union dead in mind. If you consider combat deaths on both sides, it would take about 2 weeks of New York's current coronavirus losses to eclipse the both-sides total.
Even so, isn't Gettysburg memorable among the standard-setters for quick slaughter in U.S. historical experience? Are you sure it is right to minimize anything which is currently killing on a similar scale, and not done yet? The projected total deaths for New York are, after all, far greater than Gettysburg's both-sides total. How bad does the death toll have to get before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons begins to seem grotesque to you?
The covid's gonna get ya, you weak ass bitch
Now explain why Seattle and Los Angeles have lower death rates, despite the virus being identified in those states first? Could it be lower population density? Why yes it is. Also, the burying unclaimed bodies in mass graves is something that New York has been doing for over a century. Reason even ran a story about how this was misinformation a couple of days ago.
Might also be warmer climate.
If you consider combat deaths on both sides, it would take about 2 weeks of New York’s current coronavirus losses to eclipse the both-sides total.
Jesus, how do you keep getting this shit wrong? Try opening a book for once that isn't about teenage wizards.
The projected total deaths for New York are, after all, far greater than Gettysburg’s both-sides total. How bad does the death toll have to get before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons begins to seem grotesque to you?
Do you get this worked up over deaths from alcohol-related causes? Because the coof isn't going to get close to that.
lathrop, if you are going to use American historical examples, can you at least use appropriate ones? It is bad enough your thought process gets mangled, but seriously....
Battle deaths in Gettysburg ~7,000.
Projected coronavirus deaths in New York: ~14,000+.
Source is University of Washington Covid-19 website.
Once again, how bad does this have to be before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons becomes grotesque?
Projected coronavirus deaths in New York: ~14,000+.
Source is University of Washington Covid-19 website.
What was their projected death numbers during the first week of April, Stephen? Oh, right, you can't see those because they hid them after the 5 April rampback.
Also, it's incredible that your short-term memory is so bad, because you posted this just yesterday: "In New York, coronavirus has started to deliver a Battle of Gettysburg toll, each week, for week after week." 7,000 people a week have been dying, Stephen?
Red Rocks, unless you dispute the 14,000 figure, which you have not done yet, please answer the question: How bad does this have to be before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons becomes grotesque?
Red Rocks, unless you dispute the 14,000 figure, which you have not done yet
What's the point in disputing a wild-ass guess?
How bad does this have to be before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons becomes grotesque?
When did you stop beating your wife?
There are going to be a few thousand less Trump supporters at the polls in rural Michigan come November. They will be off collecting Darwin awards, because of days like today.
What I love most about this Short Bus Black Plague is the vindictive, passive-aggressive, rejection-obsessed behavior of the left.
How the fuck are you going to catch the Coof sitting in your car, you moron?
In New York, coronavirus has started to deliver a Battle of Gettysburg toll, each week, week after week
Fuckin' LOL--the Battle of Gettysburg had approximately 8,000 killed and 27,000 wounded in three days. NYC just got up to that in approximately four months for number of deaths and hospitalizations, and 98% of the deaths have had at least one of the following--Diabetes, Lung Disease, Cancer, Immunodeficiency, Heart Disease, Hypertension, Asthma, Kidney
Disease, and GI/Liver Disease. Week after week? Get the fuck out of here.
Problem was, New York missed shutting down when they should have, by a matter of days. Now they must pay—by lining up the THERMO KING trailers, and burying unclaimed dead in mass graves, in trenches.
Now we see where Stephen's teenage-girl pettiness towards protesters comes from--the people dying in larger numbers are in a deep-blue city, so of course he transfers that anger and helplessness onto people who would rather not have an iron boot on their neck telling them to shut up and stay inside.
Red Rocks, low information does even more than ad hominems to undermine political rants. You had only to tune into tonight's news to see densely packed crowds out of their vehicles in Michigan. Virus was surely there among them, and some people will die needlessly in consequence.
Anyone really hostile to these protestors might encourage them to practice more of that reckless, self-damaging conduct. But it would add danger for bystanders they later encounter by happenstance, before they themselves became symptomatic.
And of course, the notion that it is somehow iron-boot tyranny to constrain deadly contagion is almost unique to this era. Since the Enlightenment, no other has delivered such a grotesquely deranged political ideology.
Your fondness for "helplessness," as an epithet would choke in your throat if you saw in overflowing intensive care units the kind of helplessness for which your advocacy urges increase. You hide behind bravado. Come out and face the truth, you coward. Go to New York. Find some way to help.
Fantasy is forever more important to progressives than reality
Red Rocks, low information does even more than ad hominems to undermine political rants.
Like this one?--"There are going to be a few thousand less Trump supporters at the polls in rural Michigan come November. They will be off collecting Darwin awards, because of days like today." Do you realize what a colossal fucking hypocrite you look like?
Virus was surely there among them, and some people will die needlessly in consequence.
Like I said, vindictive and rejection-obsessed.
Anyone really hostile to these protestors might encourage them to practice more of that reckless, self-damaging conduct.
Add passive-aggressive to Stephen's personality shortcomings.
And of course, the notion that it is somehow iron-boot tyranny to constrain deadly contagion is almost unique to this era. Since the Enlightenment, no other has delivered such a grotesquely deranged political ideology.
A "deadly contagion"--that kills primarily the extremely old and sick, in the rare event it does kill, and is being vectored by nursing homes.
Your fondness for “helplessness,” as an epithet would choke in your throat if you saw in overflowing intensive care units the kind of helplessness for which your advocacy urges increase. You hide behind bravado. Come out and face the truth, you coward. Go to New York. Find some way to help.
Oooo, the big man hiding in his house from the coof thinks he can use guilt to shame me. Stop projecting your fear of mortality on to others, you weak-assed bootlicker.
Dying for freedom is never 'needless'.
The people who are protesting against Gov. Whitmer's stay-at-home order for the State of Michigan don't realize that they're also endangering themselves, their fellow protestors, their neighbors, friends, and families, not to mention the lives of people who either put their own lives at risk as first responders, and costing even more lives in hospitals, nursing homes, etc., as well.
If Governor Whitmer made a mistake, it was not sending out the police to forcibly disperse the protestors and force them to go home..
Is Lathrop a parody account? I can never keep up.
Sometimes I think we are all parody accounts.
With each day the fascists make parody harder and harder.
There are going to be a few thousand less Trump supporters at the polls in rural Michigan come November. They will be off collecting Darwin awards, because of days like today.
Eh, no -- the vast majority of deaths in Michigan (80-90%) are in the three metro Detroit counties (and, sadly, as in other states, African Americans are dying a highly disproportionate rate). Rural Michigan areas have been only lightly affected. In the four counties of the protesting sheriffs, there are fewer than 20 cases total and no deaths (one of those counties still has no cases at all).
Right Slocum, and future contagion is entirely imaginary—just like it was in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey, when they had fewer than 20 cases and no deaths.
Your rural exceptionalism is starting to ring hollow in South Dakota. Or for that matter in rural New Jersey, where they just found a nursing home stashing 17 corpses in a closet.
On pandemic time, November is a long time from now. Good luck to you, and to all the fools who think virtuous rural lives make them immune.
The worst affected county in the U.S., on a per-capita basis—more infection per capita than New York City—is Blaine County Idaho, which is a hell of a lot more remote than anywhere in Michigan. Problem is, Blaine County has a ski resort, Sun Valley. That means that just like in rural Michigan, people travel from big cities to rural Blaine County. The difference is that they do it more often in Blaine County, so they got infected sooner.
All that means is that it will take longer in rural Michigan for a truck driver, or a homecoming student, or some news reporter flying in to cover your Trump rally, to bring uncontrolled pandemic your way. You don't even know if 20 cases is a huge number already, if it is the tip of an iceberg. In the Northeast, nonchalance like yours was everywhere, 7 weeks ago.
Maybe you will get lucky, and escape that fate. I truly hope you do, if only for the selfish reason that after I have to go through a months-long lock-down, I don't want it started up again by you guys, because you decided on purpose to be stupid.
But if they rebel against protective measures, plenty of rural places will come up snake-eyes, and their luck will run out. That could be you, too.
It would be much better for this nation to clamp down all at once, and then get organized for a hard-to-manage aftermath that is at least better than shut-down, while we wait for a vaccine and an end to the pandemic. In a hurricane, nobody gets to dodge between the raindrops forever.
Really, good luck to you. Stay healthy.
"Problem is, Blaine County has a ski resort, Sun Valley. "
So then it's not really remote, is it? BTW, these four counties in Michigan with few cases and no deaths also have ski resorts but didn't end up with outbreaks because of it (the county with the resort I linked -- Benzie -- is the one that still has zero cases).
Will these places get some more cases? Very probably. Will they ever 'blow up' into major outbreaks? I rather doubt it. There's just little congregation of people up there going on right now (I was up a couple of weeks ago). The folks up there don't want all the bars and restaurants opened immediately, they want to be able to do things (like golfing, like gardening, like taking their boat out to fish) that can easily be done safely but that are currently banned under the stay-at-home order.
Maybe you will get lucky, and escape that fate. I truly hope you do, if only for the selfish reason that after I have to go through a months-long lock-down, I don’t want it started up again by you guys, because you decided on purpose to be stupid.
The idea of the lockdown was to prevent the medical system from being overwhelmed. That has been achieved -- for example the university hospital here in Ann Arbor set up a field hospital in a campus sports building but has never used it (neither for local patients nor those being transferred from metro Detroit hospitals).
So now what? Are you now proposing to keep everybody under de-facto house-arrest until there's a vaccine or until cases fall all the way to zero? What if there never is one or what if it's 18 months out? What's your end-game? If it's not possible to relax the rules even a little in an area with few cases and no deaths, when and where could relaxing the rules be permitted?
Slocum, now you are making sense, but still asking the wrong question. The question governing relaxation of social isolation should not be, when, but, with what metrics. These will do it:
– Get a consensus from epidemiologists about what constitutes a low enough infection rate.
– Get sufficient testing going to be sure when that rate has been reached.
– Assure sufficient capacity for sustainable, ongoing, repeat random test sampling, nationwide, to detect inevitable recurrences.
– Arrange for contact tracing of everyone named by people found to test positive.
– Have adequate isolation and quarantine capacity in place, to make sure those who test positive do not infect anyone.
– Make sure that the circumstances of quarantine feel supportive, and not punitive, for everyone but crazy rebellious hammerheads, who may have to be kept in locked cells.
– Close the borders, except for mandatory supervised quarantine for Americans returning from abroad.
– Make all that happen simultaneously, nationwide.
That should do it.
But one other thing has to be accomplished first. When President Trump was asked a couple of days ago what metrics he would use to make the relaxation decision, he got his usual two-second WTF panicked look, and then pointed at his head. That was the answer. So, before any of this can happen, someone competent to handle pandemic management has to be put in charge, and Trump has to be prevented from interfering, even if he thinks it will cost him reelection. As things look now, that probably can't happen.
So Trump supporters are going to have to learn that if they hate social isolation which just goes on and on, they better put enough pressure on the Republican Senate. They need to get Trump under control, and let an expert manage the pandemic without putting politics first.
Good luck and stay well.
Face it -- almost none of that is going to happen. Epidemiologists are no more likely to form a consensus than economists or any other collection of experts. Nor are we going to get anything close to universal nationwide testing or contract tracing for that matter -- we're not remotely close. There is no way that we can have strict stay-at-home orders left in place for many months rather weeks -- people will not stand for it and the economy cannot take it.
Slocum, the only reason the metrics have not been achieved already is because Trump never wanted it to happen. We are left to speculate why.
With regard to stay-at-home orders, you suppose people will not stand for it. Where do you live? Are you in upstate Michigan? Some other state? Where?
I ask because people around me in Massachusetts have been standing for it, undoubtedly unhappily, for about 6 weeks. If I rely on media accounts, and add information from telephone conversations with people I know, my impression is that what people around here will not stand for is a premature, foredoomed end to the isolation which has been keeping them safe. What they fear is coercion which would force them out, to take deadly risks. What they understand is that President Trump is just the person to do that coercing. Presumably you can see that opens another route leading toward the disorder you posit, right?
Underlying everything you have said is plainly evident determination to minimize. It is a shame that determination is so widely shared in lightly affected areas. It probably means that this entire ordeal, for everyone in the nation, will be protracted far longer than it needs to be. Maybe for years, if the virus goes into natural decline with warm weather, only to reemerge each autumn.
The natural phenomenon you discount is implacable, and impervious to opinion. It will do what it will do, and society and government will dance to its tune, unless we can get out ahead and manage it with skill. You, and like-thinking others, oppose management. I suppose that is because your information or your imagination, or both, are failing you. Or maybe ideological commitment clouds your insight. What a shame.
I wish I could take you to Mass General, and let you talk with doctors and nurses I know there, and let you see the exhaustion and fear on their faces. They are neither cowards nor weaklings. It is a shame I must even say that. These are incredibly dedicated and intrepid people, who nevertheless suffer the fear that comes from certain knowledge they have been forced to the ragged edge while combating a natural force that threatens to get wildly out of control. Compared to them, the peeps and squeaks I hear from unaffected ideologues don't count for much.
Why hasn't anyone answered my question: How bad does this have to get before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons becomes grotesque? Why don't you answer that?
Slocum, the only reason the metrics have not been achieved already is because Trump never wanted it to happen. We are left to speculate why.
Oh, please. We don't have the testing capacity not 'because Trump' but because manufacturers can't produce and labs can't process tests at anything close to the rate you're suggesting we need. With the 'we don't have testing because Trump doesn't want it to happen' you're well into tinfoil hat territory.
I ask because people around me in Massachusetts have been standing for it, undoubtedly unhappily, for about 6 weeks.
Get back to me when it has been 6 months.
my impression is that what people around here will not stand for is a premature, foredoomed end to the isolation which has been keeping them safe.
No individual has to end their own isolation if they choose not to. You can stay home as long as you like even if the government doesn't order you to do it.
Underlying everything you have said is plainly evident determination to minimize.
Not at all. But your pie-in-the-sky criteria for ending the lockdown are completely unrealistic.
Why hasn’t anyone answered my question: How bad does this have to get before minimizing it for purely ideological reasons becomes grotesque?
I'm not minimizing (nor am I any kind of Trump supporter). But I can see where this is headed -- and it's not months on end of lockdown until everybody can finally, magically emerge into a happy pandemic-free world.
Or for that matter in rural New Jersey, where they just found a nursing home stashing 17 corpses in a closet.
Hey, dummy--nursing homes have been the primary vector of this whole thing, even in your precious Greatest City In The World.
While it's true that African Americans and other non-white minority groups are hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic, it's also true that containing it is also important, so that it won't spread, either in the non-white communities, or state-wide. That's true everywhere.
You keep bringing up this mass-grave thing but never seem to respond when someone points out that the graves in question are the city cemetery on Hart Island - a cemetery where mass graves (150 at a time) have been dug by local convicts for the city's indigent dead since 1869. No more (or less) are being dug now than in the past.
The only difference from past practice is that the city recently switched to private contractors to dig the graves rather than compelling prison laborers to do the work.
Rossami, I saw the famous xkcd cartoon, about someone is wrong on the internet. I took it as cautionary, so I don't always try to correct folks who insist wrongly that I am mistaken. (I do thank people who point out my mistakes when I am wrong. But this is not one of those cases.)
Because you insist, and becuase you have been repeatedly mistaken, you can have an answer. Yes, Hart island has been a potters field for a long time. No, private contracting is not all that has changed with the pandemic.
I have read three articles on different days which mentioned the Hart Island burials. Each gave the background you mention, but each also said that the current rate of burials has increased 5-fold over previous experience.
I will say also that one article was accompanied by fairy high quality still images taken from a drone. What that showed pretty plainly was burials underway, with boxed corpses in excess of the five-fold figure being interred. That is not proof of a higher rate, because we do not know over what period those dead accumulated before being brought to the trench. It probably is proof that 150 corpses per burial site is not the current standard.
One other thing was also apparent in the photographs I looked at. The trench in question was freshly dug, and plainly scaled to accommodate not 150 dead, but thousands. The burial underway had begun at one end, and proceeded only a tiny fraction of the way down the trench. From what could be seen in the photograph, I estimated the crew was at work on interring about 48 corpses, and that they had probably done something similar at least twice before, starting at one end of their trench. It looked as if more than 90% of the trench still lay open. It would be fair to say that judgment of scale in an image taken with a wide angle lens is always tricky, but I am a professional photographer, and may be better at judging accurately than most people.
"Liberty and freedom are an outworn, failed ideology."
The wisdom of the great Stephen Lathrop. How far some people in the US have gone from "give me liberty or give me death."
Monarchist, you give the impression that the twaddle around which you put quotation marks came from me. I assume you did that on purpose, knowing that it did not come from me. That is an unimpressive standard of honesty. Try to do better.
No, it was a paraphrasing of your comments. You're going around making the case for curtailing the freedoms of individuals as an acceptable cost to get through this pandemic. That makes it an accurate paraphrasing, unless you're prepared right now to state that you do not, in fact, support government restrictions on individual liberty under any circumstance.
Whitmer's career progression has come to a halt. Gone is her opportunity to be Biden's VP, her career in general and she has delivered MI for Trump. She has become a spectacular trainwreck in just a few days.
Seeing her govern the last few days is like watching John Boyd's "Patterns of Conflict" play out in real time, except she's exhibiting moral and mental collapse without any opponent to force her hand.
Phailing Phil Murphy f the People's Republic of NJ will follow her.
Phailing Phil has phucked up royally here. We have a 10-14 delay in getting test results. That is, you get a test....and you're waiting two weeks. Are you fucking serious, Phil? Phailing Phil has had a month to address this, and has utterly failed. The Health Commissar Judith M. Persichilli shares in this abject failure.
This Goldman Sachs reject and the Health Commissar are totally incompetent. Cannot wait to vote his phat ass out of office.
I don't watch cable news, but apparently he was on Tucker Carlson last night and actually said something along the lines of, "I didn't take the Constitution into consideration where lives were at stake." How anyone can say something so tone-deaf is baffling, but it shows how this event has broken people who normally think of themselves as our society's Eloi.
i would prefer to see the NJ GOP let Phil run unopposed.
NJ cannot be saved, and i expect things to get especially bad during the next governor's term. Why have a GOP as captain when the ship goes down? Lets the Ds own it, good and hard.
Do people in NJ care? I know quite a few people in Jersey. Good people but all support the lockdown and are partisan Democrats that will obey and believe whatever a Democrat tells them. Know tons of people in MI and even the partisan hacks are pissed.
The woke is an dolt. The problem is in large urban areas with a high percentage of folks who are obese (which is related to federal or state aid) and age. Detroit, NYC, Chicago...all having issues..yet Seattle where this started isn't...they might be super woke there but they exercise and 70% of the population isn't fat eating burger barf on the dole everyday..
That could explain the death rate, but not the spread. There are no fat or old people in Seattle?
Almost everyone believes this is very contagious virus, but so what? That doesn't matter. All that matters is death rate. And as the days go by and fewer and fewer people die in relation to the rate of infection, it seems that this is really not much to worry about except for a small segment of society.
So we are currently destroying a society, culture, and economy for a tiny fraction of the elderly and immuno compromised who might get really sick with this.
All along talk has been about our sacrifice for grandma. If we are going to cast the problem in that light, shouldn't it be the other way around?
Renad, I prefer to give you the benefit of the doubt, and think of your comment as morally incompetent, instead of morally monstrous. What you are talking about—if you want to let the pandemic rip without social counter-measures—are mass deaths measured in the millions, but as you say, notably more common among older people. Maybe you don't even know that is the most likely consequence. Get informed.
But assuming you find out, and like your utilitarian argument, it still fails morally. Discount each death for age, down from the standard $9-million per lost life, to something more like $3-million, and you still get a morally horrifying result. You won't believe me, so do the math yourself.
Ask yourself, how many thousands of dollars should I be saved, to justify a policy to kill old people on purpose? When you see the imputed dollar losses inflicted on the old, and pro-rate those, to get a figure to compare to benefits for everyone else, it's not going to look too good per person. And that is just the result of accepting at face value, and without protest, the moral idiocy of a completely utilitarian argument. I don't think you have thought this through.
There is no evidence to indicate we will mass deaths in the millions of COVID-19 because we do not HAVE a death rate at this point. That's because we are only testing sick people. All we have is a death rate given the number of people who get sick. If this virus is so contagious, it has likely been running through the population since December and therefore we should have a much higher death rate than we do. Currently, there are 28,000 deaths in the U.S. That's .008 percent of the entire population. Go look up stats for car crashes, heart attacks, domestic abuse, etc. By that metric NONE of us should ever leave the house, ever, for any purpose.
What we DO have evidence of is the number of deaths likely to occur if we do not take common sense measures to BOTH protect the vulnerable and allow those who are not to go on with their lives. Unemployment kills. What happens when you can't pay your rent? Buy food? When the tax coffers are bare and states can't pay for basic services? When you get sick with some other disease but can't get treatment because hospitals and clinics have folded, as they are doing right now?
Think the government is going to send that cash your way? $24 trillion in debt? Print more money and suddenly those Trumpbuxx won't buy you a loaf of bread—IF you can find one?
What about all THAT misery? THOSE lives?
You are the one who is morally monstrous, not me.
With non-ideological management, this could be under reasonable control in about 2 months. Sorry, buddy, but it is not a moral problem when someone chooses to reject your ideology. It is a moral problem if to cling to your ideology you try to block a non-ideological solution which will work. Rejecting that is what Trump and his acolytes are doing now. Maybe you number yourself in that camp. That's on you.
It is especially striking, and especially morally repugnant, to see that the opposition to stay-at-home requirements is not coming from those in the most affected areas, but instead from less-affected ideologues elsewhere.
So, lacking a logical response to my very reasonable questions, you resort to calling me an ideologue? How on earth you get an "ideology" from what I'm saying? Wanting people in this country to prosper and live freely is an "ideology"?
You're the one who wants to keep us all under government-controlled lock and key. Talk about an ideology.
But, fine, marinate in your belief that you have the moral high ground here. Hope you have all kinds of safety nets when everything crumbles around us.
Actually, we haven't seen a huge spread in Seattle - at least not officially. Over 93% of tests have been coming back negative since the beginning.
I suspect that it wasn't very wide spread here to begin with. It was caught very early because the first outbreak location was a nursing home. Likely, when restrictions eventually lift (although our governor keep pushing the date further and further out) we will see a higher second wave.
Another spike is inevitable, but it can be contained by locking down the nursing homes since they're acting as the primary vector for this. Their infection and mortality numbers are WAY out of proportion to their population figures.
They're about half of all the deaths in Colorado, but only make up 0.2 percent of the population there.
My brother lives in SE MI and owns a house in northern MI just east of the 4 counties cited above. These are lakefront counties and they are far from backwater shitholes. Google Traverse City and check out the photos. Yacht clubs, country clubs, mansions, upscale restaurants, stores and boutiques everywhere you look. Last time I looked at real estate up there it was way out of my price range. It's a resort area that relies on tourism and there are a lot of 2nd homes owned by wealthy folks who can afford to get out of Detroit or Ann Arbor in the summer. The house my brother owns is far from being a vacation cottage, just a modest home on a modest street in a small town. It's been in the family for well over a century. Our mother was born in that house 88 years ago. He's retired and he and his wife typically spend several weeks a year up there. It's a great place to relax and of course he has to keep up with maintenance. It's finally spring and he needs to get up there but can't and isn't very pleased with the governor.
Ann Arbor isn't a town people flee.
Nevertheless, lots of folks from Ann Arbor go there for weekends or vacations and own cottages 'up north'.
I grew up in Ann Arbor. Lots of filthy rich university administrators with time on their hands in the summertime.
Oh and I fled Ann Arbor 40 years ago.
Go into any small store in the city of Detroit and observe the lottery. Motivated players, long exposure rates, small stores, lines of people waiting to purchase something while the infected person plays the lotto. The lottery is a significant reason of why it is spreading.
Whitmer is almost as bad as the test/trace believers. How can anybody take her seriusly?
There is nothing more aggravating about buying gas than lotto players.
At least she hasn't declared WWE wrestling an "essential service". Florida's DeSantis for the win!
CB
Remember Whitmer was also on the flavored vape ban bandwagon last year and said she had the authority to implement a ban without the legislature's consent.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is also in running for V.P., also implementing draconian measures. A group there, NM Business Coalition, has come up with a very reasonable, slowly implemented plan to open up business in the state. They are gathering signatures on a petition to present the governor, nearly reached their goal in a single day.
Grisham refuses to listen. Says we won't even consider reopening until there is widespread testing and contact tracing, via phone app. We have tested 34,000 people at this point, there are 1500 positive, 36 dead, 20 in ICU—out of 2 million people. Tragic for friends and family involved, but statistically insignificant. There is no COVID-19 emergency in New Mexico.
There IS an economic one. NM is highly dependent on tourism and service industry dollars. The state cannot run a deficit, must balance budget. No tax base, poor-ass state—I wonder what the hell she is thinking?
If I were conspiracy-minded, I'd say this is all deliberate . . .
We have tested 34,000 people at this point, there are 1500 positive, 36 dead, 20 in ICU—out of 2 million people.
How many of those are nursing home residents?
There IS an economic one. NM is highly dependent on tourism and service industry dollars.
It's also dependent on extractive industries. I guarantee the oil price collapse is going to absolutely gut the state budget; it was a problem during Martinez' time in office, and she didn't have a deliberate economic shutdown to contend with.
If Lujan-Grisham is that determined to cut the state's throat in the interest of the Precautionary Principle, NM's economy will degrade back into what it was before the 20th century as a giant sheep ranch.
Don't know how many are nursing home residents. Haven't been able to find those stats. But it's been reported that they are all over the age of 70, with preexisting conditions.
Yep, pretty much the state is effed. But maybe all them movie starz and new age healers can lend their monetary support.
Yep, pretty much the state is effed. But maybe all them movie starz and new age healers can lend their monetary support.
Doubtful. Wyoming is their tax haven of choice.
I suspect the next wave of politics will include a demand that the Federal government bail out each state, and when that can't happen [because you simply can't hide the effect of printing 100s of trillions of dollars for even a short time], blame Trump for their decisions to tank their own state's economy.
Cops applying common sense? WTF?
Sheriffs not cops/police. BIG difference.
The Kathleen Blanco of the Covid world. In case no one remembers her, she was a kindergarten teacher turned politician who became the 1st female gov of LA. She was in charge during Katrina and became known as Kathleen Blankstare for her deer in headlights leadership.
It's not enough for a sheriff to refuse the order. The issuance of the order is a federal felony violation of title 18 section 241 of the US federal code. States are subject to it due to the 14th amendment. The Sheriff is a constitutional officer with a duty to uphold this law. If the issuance of the order is not a felony then the sheriff is wrong to not obey the lawful order. If the issuance of the order is a felony the sheriff needs to stop the felony in progress by arresting this governor and handing over control to the next in progression per state law.
The federal government decides whether a person's federal civil rights have been violated, not a county sheriff. I think people have an inherent civil right to possess and use any drugs, and to possess and use any firearms. Does this mean we can lock up every legislator and police officer for 10 years for violating those rights? Since Trump declared a national emergency, does that mean he should be locked up? Did you know there actually are idiots who compare the remote and temporary possibility of a ticket for not staying at home, with the mass system of segregation and discrimination that held down generations of people and required the passage of civil rights laws?
Fuck off, slaver.
Did you know that you keep repeating your own silly post time after time? Gonna go out on a limb here and guess you and Joe might be carrying the same gene.
