It's Pretty Unlikely the Cadets Were Flashing a White Power Hand Symbol at the Army-Navy Game
This latest social media freakout has prompted a formal military investigation.

U.S. Military Academy officials are investigating several cadets who were caught on camera flashing hand signs at the Army-Navy football game on Saturday. Screenshots of the hand gestures went viral on social media, where woke Twitter users asserted that the cadets had made the white power "OK" symbol.
Young extremists in the Army and Navy? That's one possibility. The more benign explanation—and a far more likely one—is that the cadets were playing a well-known kids' game that has nothing to do with white supremacy.
Several cadets could be seen on camera making the "OK" gesture, which quickly drew the ire of progressive activists due to its recent association with white supremacy. (The hand "OK" sign is now considered an extremist symbol by the Anti-Defamation League, though only under certain circumstances.)
"This happened on national television today," tweeted Hamdia Ahmed, a model and activist. "These two felt like it was okay to put up a white power symbol on national tv."
https://twitter.com/BruthaManTho/status/1205883634378563584
A spokesperson for the Naval Academy told The Washington Post that officials were investigating what happened, and it would be "inappropriate to speculate any further while we are conducting this investigation."
It's important to note that the "OK" symbol's status as a hate symbol is hotly debated. It never became a hate symbol on its own terms, but was the subject of a campaign by far-right trolls to convince everyone that touching the thumb to the index finger formed a "W" and a "P" for "white power." According to The New York Times:
It started in early 2017 as a hoax. Some users of 4chan, an anonymous and unrestricted online message board, began what they called "Operation O-KKK," to see if they could trick the wider world — and especially liberals and the mainstream media — into believing that the innocuous gesture was actually a clandestine symbol of white power.
"We must flood twitter and other social media websites with spam, claiming that the OK hand signal is a symbol of white supremacy," one of the users posted, going on to suggest that everyone involved create fake social media accounts "with basic white girl names" to propagate the notion as widely as possible.
Some white nationalists did indeed appropriate the gesture. But for other people, it was a nasty game to trick gullible people, and it largely worked. Some people who flash the "OK" sign likely have no idea about these unsavory connections, and even the ADL cautions that:
The overwhelming usage of the "okay" hand gesture today is still its traditional purpose as a gesture signifying assent or approval. As a result, someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention. Since 2017, many people have been falsely accused of being racist or white supremacist for using the "okay" gesture in its traditional and innocuous sense.
Back to the cadets: Having carefully reviewed the video footage in question, it seems pretty likely that their gestures were even less significant—they are probably playing the circle game. What is the circle game? you ask. Well, it's pretty simple: You make a circle gesture with your hand, and if someone else looks at the circle, you get to punch that person.
— G (@stevensongs) December 15, 2019
I was not familiar with the game, but I've subsequently heard from enough people who played it during their teen years. (During my own adolescence, we had a similar game: You could punch someone if you were the first to spot a specific kind of car—a Volkswagon Beetle or a P.T. Cruiser—and then that person couldn't hit you back.)
It seems fairly obvious that that's what the cadets are doing, since they aren't just flashing the hand gesture at the camera, but rather, doing it in each other's faces in order to make each other accidentally look at the circle.
So this is all rather silly and a bit juvenile—but unless some additional details emerge, it seems extremely unlikely that the people involved were trying to send subliminal racist messages. As is often the case, social media's habit of imputing maximally sinister motivations to random people's behaviors is deeply misguided. But the price of cancel culture is eternal vigilance.

As long as this shit continues to work, it will continue to be done.
Well, if I were running a military training school and the media were reporting that my students were making white-supremacist gestures, sure I'd look into it. And hopefully when finding there's nothing to the reports, issuing a public blast at the gullible media and praise for the students for calmly facing the attacks.
They'll probably have to face grenades and who-knows-what other forms of modern weapons - and they'll also have to face false accusations, even from fellow officers. We don't have to praise the people lobbing the false accusations in order to say that this could turn out to be a helpful learning experience.
It's probably just as well for everyone that military officers and officer trainees are no longer expected to fight duels against their accusers. But that history shows that facing down false accusers is an expected challenge in military life, just as surely as being prepared to get one's head shot off.
I would LOVE to see a return to legal dueling. Progtards would learn to shut their mouths, and I would have a legal pretext to harm many of them.
So you go around looking for ways you can get away with physically hurting people who say things that you take as a personal affront. You're a poster child for the need for red flag laws.
"They’ll probably have to face grenades and who-knows-what other forms of modern weapons – and they’ll also have to face false accusations, even from fellow officers. "
Soldiers have stumbled across a solution to the difficulties of military life: suicide. More popular now than ever.
Give us your trip report.
"...Soldiers have stumbled across a solution to the difficulties of military life: suicide. More popular now than ever."
Please make sure you do it right; no half measures.
Solve your problems by having a post meal glass of Drano.
Nice. I’m glad that’s finally catching on.
Do the world a favor and get right on that.
"They’ll probably have to face grenades ..."
Naval officers? Not bloody likely.
this
First off, it's a common game among cadets, troops, and jocks.
The Circle Game, It's sophomoric, but NOT racist. Only the morons think it's racist.
Now, it's also upside down (and backwards!) from the 'Ok' symbol or gesture, so the 'W' is really an 'M', and the 'p' is really a 'd' (dM) shooting down the moronic idea that's it's "white power", except for, again, the morons looking to be upset.
Maybe it's for the dumb Morons (dM) out there.
Leave Mormons outa this!
In the military. Been doing this for years.
What I'd like to know is why it's okay to train these young people to kill, torture and destroy people's homes for the benefit of the world financial elite but it's not okay for them to flash a sign that demonstrates the US's belief in its cultural supremacy.
Sometimes people are willing to be naive in order to shield their selves from things they do not wish to be true. It was plainly obvious what the students were doing. Secondly, at this point, it's impossible especially for kids of their position, to not know what the symbol means today.
Problem 1, circle game is played by getting someone (1-3 people) to look at your circle below your waist who are aware that's what you're doing among friends. Cadets had hand signs above their waist and on Reece Davis' shoulder.
Problem 2, did not see anyone getting punched for looking. Game can't be played by people seeing it at home watching it on TV unaware that a game is being played.
It is what we know it to be. They were flashing the white power hand sign. They should be expelled or ALL American tax dollars should be pulled to fund their education and training. Parents pay for books and their personal needs. They are not being trained to play dumb mindless stuff like this.
All models are wrong. Some are useful.
I pretty much stop listening when I hear someone has "activist" in the job title.
Yep.
Back in the day we just called them hippies.
OK
I want proof that any white nationalist used it for any purpose other than to signal okay. either way its great trolling and the left fell for it
Guilty until proven innocent.
to be honest i thought that the upside down okay symbol used in an up and down motion was the sign to jack off. they were telling them to jack off
That's a closed first in a circle, unless your indicating the other guy is very small endowed.
Hey i'm trying to spread new rumors of what it is
Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights do make a left.
Center-right provocateur gaslights progressive white bitches
"Twitter users asserted that the cadets had made the white power "OK" symbol."
If Twitter users aren't America's most horrible people, it's only because YouTube commenters are even worse.
And somehow the 4chan folks come out of it looking like the least ridiculous group of internet retards in the bunch.
2019 is a trip.
Twitter users are worse and even dumber.
Yeah, you really dont see journos quoting youtube commenters much, whereas comments from Twitiots are unavoidable.
That's because Journos make up 75% of Twitter. Porn stars another 24% and 1% regular people (that's my take anyhow). YouTube on the other hand is the enemy that is destroying "real" journalism.
Totally true. Yet there are entire "news" articles composed of nothing more than pasting tweets. It is absurd.
Where do reason commenters fit into the hierarchy? Self included.
I'm currently flashing a hand gesture. If you guessed it is the middle finger, you win today's prize.
That's a male power symbol.
I remember W saying once how nice it was to see people waving with all five fingers for a change.
This is what happens when you ban finger guns.
No more finger banging?
Just stop, the OK sign is not a fucking symbol of white supremacy. Leftists are do dumb they will believe anything. Do you know *a* high school kid? They all play that game.
Leftists who keep saying that is a white power symbol are either the dumbest fucking people or deliberately lying. I'm not going to ever cede this point to them. They must all masturbate to how racist they think America is, and they think they see racism everywhere. They are so stupid they fell for a 4chan prank, but instead of realizing or admitting how gullible they are, they continue to double down.
At this point it's not about the truth, it's just about berating everyone and everything they don't like.
It is not that leftists are dumb. It is that they are complete lunatics who will latch onto anything if they think it gives them some kind of power. They know that the okay sign isn't white supremacist. They just don't care. In fact, they like it that it isn't, since forcing people to stop doing something based on a lie is an even bigger exercise of power over them than forcing them to do something based on the truth.
The left is not dumb, and they are not lunatics. They are fascists. One of their goals is to control the language and culture of the west. To vilify innocuous gestures, language and customs and bend normal people to their will is part of the game, the opening part.
They are fascists but this is lunacy.
I think we agree Ecoli. We just disagree on what "lunatic" means. And that is a question of semantics.
Fair enough. I just wanted to put a sharper point on the dastardly people trying (successfully, unfortunately) to demonize normal discourse. If they are written off as crazy, they are not guilty.
We do agree.
One of their goals is to control the language and culture of the west.
"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by eactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten."
Better go tell these fascists:
Nazis and anti-Semites slip through GOP primaries, causing headaches for party

Yet another handle, Hihn? What happened, did you get banned again?
His others probably got banned again. He was shitposting just a out every story last week, same cut and paste, bold, off topic fruit salad he always posts. One story he must have been 75% of the posts, a lot of it the same redundant shit over and over. Mostly off topic or wild conspiracy theory drivel.
I wish he'd put an honest-to-goodness newsletter. It'd be a laugh riot.
I visited his page once. Batshit crazy doesn't do it justice.
Do you mean his enemies list page? The one he keeps denying keeping, even while posting the URL *in his denial*?
Yep. That's the one.
Also, I never checked back to see if I ever made the list.
I keep trying to make the list ...
"His others probably got banned again."
Damn.
Told Reason I would throw them a few bucks during the Webathon if they banhammered him again.
Looks like I may need to pony up ...
"But their campaigns have alarmed Republican leaders, with state and national GOP figures now speaking out against them and making clear they are not welcome in the party."
Compare this to how the Dems treat their anti-Semites, like Rashida Tlaib and Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton.
The Democrat anti-Semites already got elected.
Truth. It's all about obedience. Know how I know? Because once you commit a transgression, you cannot apologize. Nothing you can say or do will make it better unless you are in a very small circle at the top, including the likes of Justin Trudeau, Ralph Northam, Hillary Clinton, etc.
If it were about the transgression itself, a reasonable person would evaluate your apology, maybe look at your behavior since the apology, and forgive the transgression in at least some cases. With the modern left, that never happens. Because it's not about the transgression, but rather it's about the fact that you were initially disobedient in committing the transgression.
"But for other people, it was a nasty game to trick gullible people,"
It wasn't a nasty game, but he got the "gullible" part right.
The stupidest part, though, was doubling down after it was exposed as a prank.
I was not familiar with the game, but I've subsequently heard from enough people who played it during their teen years.
First of all, this is totally different than Punch Buggy, and to lump them all in together is a grossly bigoted whitewashing of my biceps-bruising Circle Game heritage.
How the Hell did PT Cruisers get dragged into the game?
How the Hell did PT Cruisers get dragged into the game?
Yeah. The only place they should be dragged is into the junkyard.
PT "Bruiser"
When there weren't enough bugs on the road, someone had the bright idea to "reimagine" the game for a new generation.
PT Cruisers are getting thinner on the roads everyday. Probably need to start Prius Punching.
This would be because PT's are all rusty pieces of shit.
Use all the ECO-lunacy "green cars", all makes and models of hybrids, fart cars, electric cars.
ahem,, Slug Bug
What. An. Idiot.
Don't forget, perdiddle, Kodak.
Maybe we needed more reasons to punch each other as kids..
Reason.com is normally so forceful in its denunciations of white supremacy. Especially the kind of white supremacy that promotes racist policies like "border enforcement." So it's quite disappointing to see one of Charles Koch's employees downplay the severity of this hateful hand gesture.
#LibertariansForCancelCulture

lol. Oklahoma AG on line 2 says "thin ice".
Oklahoma is OK!
....or simply racist, I guess.
????
...and all this after West Point went to such trouble to purge white supremacism from its football program -
https://www.stripes.com/news/us/army-drops-football-team-s-gfbd-slogan-because-of-link-to-white-supremacy-groups-1.610103
OMG, It's not just white supremacy West Point advocates violence against jounalists too!
West Point is the US Military Academy, e.g. Army Academy. The Naval Academy is Annapolis.
And it hasn't been a "clip" since... M1 Garands. It's a magazine.
CB
/gun pedantry
Yes, fucking WWII rifles. I can't believe civilians can buy them. Weapons meant only for war. /Sarc off
40mm Bofors anti-aircraft gun, mounted on almost all US Navy ships in WWII and used years after WWII, used a clip.
Navy football dropping the phrase "Load the clip" is just BS.
It could be argued that "clip" has long been a slang word for a detachable magazine - probably originating in the military around the time of the transition from the M1 to the M14, if not before.
I hereby declare that the OK hand gesture IS in fact using the letters W and P; but that it stands for world peace, NOT white power.
Now left the left deal with that.
"West point cadets accused of making hippie hand-gestures."
Maybe at *West Point* it stand for....oh nevermind.
*confused lefty noises*
The idea that OK is now a white power symbol is something that should be ridiculed and mocked, not taken seriously.
It does not matter whether they are right or wrong about the hand gesture. White people are terrible.
Haha.
I was not familiar with the game, but I've subsequently heard from enough people who played it during their teen years.
What, they didn't have that kind of horseplay at Fancy Lad Preparatory SchooI?
No, the horseplay at Fancy Lad Preparatory School involves real live horses.
Would be interesting for someone to start scanning web pictures to find minorities flashing the gesture.
Otay!
https://www.teepublic.com/sticker/6636799-buckwheat-otay-boomer
Well! I was thinking Robby, but .....
Hmm. Eddy Murphy is a boomer and millennials probably think that portraying Buckwheat is racist.
He’ll be hosting SNL this week. Think he’ll do Buckwheat??
Of course not, he’s likely to do some Lorne Michaels mandated hate jokes.
Its been done. There are lots.
Any basketball team's bench when someone on the their team hits a 3-pt basket.
Any football referee signaling 3rd down.
You make a circle gesture with your hand, and if someone else looks at the circle, you get to punch that person.
You have to display the OK below your waist or the other kid gets to punch you.
Incorrect. Below the waist is a nutshot. Above the waist is just a punch.
Never heard that; must be a local variant. The Malcolm in the Middle video is the normal way to play it.
That's how we played it in the military. Below the waist was a nutshot.
It was always below the waist when I played. But games tend to evolve. So do symbols and what they get used for.
Back in my day, some kids played that - the circle was always made at the crotch because the whole point of the punch wasn't that they were caught looking at the circle, they were caught looking at your crotch.
I might add that by "some kids" I mean junior high - if you tried that crap by the time you were in high school you were liable to get punched in the head and told to grow up.
Ah shit we did it all the time on active duty. But then again we also get drunk until 0300 hours and get up at 0530 and do PT hungover.
Nothing like a 3 mile run followed by a greasy egg and bacon breakfast with lots of Tabasco to cure a hangover.
"Pretty unlikely"?
How about completely 100% unlikely, given that the symbol isn't about white power in the first place.
It's a game of 'made you look'. I used to play it with friends. If they looked at your OK sign you got to punch them in the arm.
All you colored folks or more likely those white liberals who are offended FOR YOU need to take a rest on this never-ending racism.
Clearly you're racist babies you didn't let the "others" play your game.
Who beyond the age of 15 is "not familiar" with the circle game besides Robby?
Doesn't sound familiar to me. We had other punching games, but I forget the rules. I think we mostly made them up on the spot.
" I think we mostly made them up on the spot."
Hope you are not just figuring that out now.
(But, either way, that means you need to punch Pod. Right now.)
Never heard of it. It must be a yankee thang.
It's a common game in the military.
You can go to just about any veteran or military Facebook group (or other social media group) and see dozens of memes of this game.
Never heard of it either. It must be a Yank thing
I'm 50, and I'd never heard of it before this article.
I am way over 15 and never heard of the circle game. Sounds wimpy to me.
We would take a swing at another's face. If they flinched, we punched them on the shoulder and said. "Made you flinch".
Twitter mob stampedes over two plus year old hoax.
Stop it, 4chan, this is just cruel to do to dumb animals who do not know any better.
They also created Pizzagate, which nearly got people killed, and served as a distraction from the sex assault allegations against Trump. Yes, all those dumb animals, believing that a sex ring was run out of a pizza parlor.
What sexual assault charges? The ones where he said they allow you to grab them?
They also stole Shia LaBeouf's flag.
That might be the greatest single event in internet history. The work required to do that was mind boggling.
Yep.
Maybe its a regional thing. I went to high school in the midwest and east coast. They played that game in the former, but not the latter.
We will never know what was meant by the gesture. But Robby's conclusion that it was the circle game is a little off. The second cadet was clearly trying to place it in the camera frame. Was he trying to get the whole stadium to look so that he could punch all of them? Maybe. Or, maybe he is a troll who knew exactly what he was doing and then feigning innocence so that he could gaslight everyone who complained. That's a classic bully technique. Naivite cutes both ways. It is naive to assume it was a circle game and equally naive to assume it was meant as a racist gesture. But an non-naive view is that young men, especially cadets, do tend to be arrogant, over-confident jerks. Put them together and these kinds of behaviors tend to occur. But since it could be any of many things it is important that unless anyone comes forward with any evidence that these young mean meant anything bad by it we should all just let it go and move on. But let's not pretend they are innocent cherubs either.
That was hilarious! You do satire well!
He's slightly more coherent than Hihn, but no less a loon.
"Was he trying to get the whole stadium to look so that he could punch all of them?" No but he probably was trying to get it on TV and use it on some of his friends. Military Facebook pages have had all sorts of memes and photos that try and trick people into looking at the symbol. It is not that far out of reasonability to assume that is what the cadet is trying to do here even if there is no way for him to get everyone but he probably can get some of his buddies when he gets home and says did you see me on TV.
Very common meme material on Veteran pages and military pages.
We did it in a bunch of our team photos because anyone who looked at the photo we got to punch. This is clearly what he was doing. I am sure he decided to risk his entire future (after doing everything it takes to get into West Point) by proclaiming his hate on national television. Come on...
Was he trying to get the whole stadium to look so that he could punch all of them? Maybe...But let’s not pretend they are innocent cherubs either.
Or, they were just trying to get a laugh by putting the "made you look" symbol on national TV. Anyone looking for anything malicious in that should probably just neck themselves.
It is NOT a hate symbol. It may be a juvenile thing to do but they are most likely playing the circle game. If you have ever been in the military you would probably be familiar with it.
I played this game in high school and a bit in college with my buddies. I went to an all boy school and was in a fraternity. It was very common. Stupid? Yes. It was fun, though.
I give credit to that midshipman, who I hope responds by punching everyone who saw the clip.
*cadet, not midshipman.
Actually one picture was a Cadet and one a Midshipman.
So they were trolling each other?
Possibly
The media has to keep racial discrimination and right wing extremism on the front burner, and that's why it it breathlessly reported.
Gotta keep people from noticing those other> times when some people did something.
I thought you were supposed to do it by your crotch.
I don’t give a crap about this absurd Fake News Media non-story, but this is a good place to mention that watching Malcolm Perry run circles around everyone else on the field for an astonishing 304 rushing yards was just incredible.
He won’t be a quarterback of course, but I think some NFL team is going to draft this kid in the late rounds, and whoever does will be getting themselves a real lightning—quick water bug of an athlete.
Wouldn't they have to wait 4 years before he could play for them? Maybe it's only 2.
No, Trump just changed the rules so they are allowes them to play professional sports and then serve their obligation. I believe they are still required to be part of the individual ready reserve so technically they can be called up. The announcers only mentioned it like 20 times during the game.
They can do it after two if the person in question joins the Reserves. There's actually quite a few AFA/ROTC grads that fill out their military commitment by doing this.
Trump changed that on Saturday with am EO he signed in the Army locker room. They mentioned it about 20 times during the game.
You could punch someone if you were the first to spot a specific kind of car—a Volkswagon Beetle or a P.T. Cruiser—and then that person couldn't hit you back.
And if you spelled Volkswagen wrong, they got to beat the daylights out of you.
Nerds also get punched.
someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention
Context is critical. Otherwise how would they ensure no leftists in good standing are ignorantly accused of white supremacy? The exonerating context here runs along the same lines as Tom Brady's sexual harassment rules:
1. Be a leftist.
2. Be a progressive.
3. Don't be on the right.
The thing is, even if you believe the "OK sign is racist" propaganda (which it isn't), the idea of it representing "W"hite "P"ower is contingent on the 3 fingers being up in a "W" shape (????). In the video, the cadets pretty clearly have the fingers pointing down and are drawing focus to the circle itself, which isn't even the same sign as what is supposedly a racist symbol.
"...where woke Twitter users asserted that the cadets had made the white power "OK" symbol."
Correction:
"Where US military snowflakes were offended by fake signal-calling."
Next time someone tells you that's a "white power" signal, you tell 'em to fuck off and die.
The USMA commandant is at least an 0-6, you don't get to that high of a tank unless you're a master of CYA.
Tanks are armored ground vehicles, they are the opposite of high. 🙂
Yes, especially because they are driven by DATs.
"...you don’t get to that high of a tank unless you’re a master of CYA."
At that level, you're probably pretty good at congressional ass-covering.
I wonder how the pearl-clutchers know this is a "white supremacy" signal. Let me guess, "I read it on the internet!" LOL
Yup. Same place they got that information about sex traffickers putting zipties on potential victim's door handles.
You mean that isn't real? Damn bought all those zip ties for nothing. And for those who can't tell, it's a fucking joke.
Well, since you are not going to use them...
Hey, you know the top of the tree that ain't anywhere close to straight?
Cut the damn thing off and ny-tie a 1/4" dowel to the trunk to keep the tree-topper aimed at the sky.
Nah, nah, we get it - they're your tools. You have to have your tools.

Journalists who credulously report on shit like this need to be whipped and driven out of town on a rail.
Woodchippers
A modernized version of tar and feathers that I like to call tar and matches.
What should happen is that every reporter and editor involved in running stories that perpetuate the claim that it's a "white power gesture" should be fired by their publisher. The campaign could be called "CANCEL GULLIBLE STUPIDITY".
It's a punching game, and it's extremely popular with the military types. Someone up the chain of command needs to tell the media to unfuck themselves.
I was in college 1977-1981 - and we played the circle game: make a circle with your hand (index finger and thumb) and if your nearby friend looks at it, punch them in the shoulder. It's absolutely probable - or a least very possible - that the cadets were playing that old game.
Which college was that?
It was a small private school in the Midwest. There's also a large state university in the same town, plus three other small private colleges. I feel no need to be more specific.
"It was a small private school in the Midwest."
This makes perfect sense. I understand your reticence and I won't press you for further details. I went to a large public university in the east, and our juvenile antics were drinking and taking drugs, and pranks against visiting professors. The punching game sounds like something from elementary school.
I was in college during that same period. But it was a serious engineering college, and if you'd tried paying some stupid punching game the first time you slugged somebody you'd have been beaten bloody.
"the "OK" symbol's status as a hate symbol is hotly debated"
Only in the tiny, insular world of Twitter
Amongst fucking idiots, but given that it's Twitter that's mostly redundant.
Not a big secret, but they trolled the entire leftist activist crackpots.
https://www.adl.org/blog/how-the-ok-symbol-became-a-popular-trolling-gesture
I played the circle game in high school. It was common in places like the locker room were you'd earn yourself a punch in the crotch often while wearing barely anything. But it would make no sense, at all, to be showing that symbol to a camera.
You mean besides having a laugh by putting it on national television?
You mean other than the fact that it is common in the military to post in pictures doing this and memes of this are very popular among veterans? And aren't we talking a out the Military Academy and the Naval Academy here?
Well, except to show contempt for the power-mongers that use these sorts of hysterics to take control of people's lives?
Think of how many Hindu's are screwed over because you only know the swastika from the History Channel.
Let's look back on another word that can get you cancelled no matter the context in which you use it - 'nigger'.
The whole purpose of the 'THAT'S OUR WORD' crowd - and their enablers - is control. They control, in some small way, what you can say.
Good to know that Robby is pretty certain this wasn't racism.
Strong words, to be sure.
*On the other hand . . . *
The other hand was busy...
So, the "OK" game, which has apparently been around forever and I've never heard of it, is now the first explanation of choice, even though it's now an unpleasant Internet Meme? (look up what meme means grandpas) I've never seen college kids at games trying to get the camera's attention that way ever (because it literally makes no sense. "OK! Let's go team! OK!"). Because the sign as a white power symbol is so stupid, and white supremacists are nothing if not stupid, it might actually be real attempt. If you can try to turn an innocent frog cartoon into something, why not try a basic hand signal. Dismissing it is showing a very tiny grasp of online reality (or politically motivated. shocking I know). The strange thing is that the service academies usually have smart kids, not tools flashing hand signals they know are internet-controversial.
Look everyone ZK has never heard of the game, therefore it must be a secret while power symbol. Did you fucking read your post out loud to see how stupid you sound, ZK?
BTW the first thing I thought when I saw it, as a veteran myself, is you fuckhead, you got me.
Says the person who's never heard of the 'ok game'.
How much more basic does a hand signal get than 'ok'?
Says the person who's never heard of the 'ok game'.
No officer (or candidate) is smart until they're at least senior O-2's.
Hi 'heraclitus'
How many people are Twits (tweeters, Twitter users, whatever) out of the entire population of the USA?
Why is their "now meme" supposed to determine everyone else's usage, intent and meaning of anything?
My neighborhood was so rough, we didn't have the circle game, we had the "I don't need to have a reason, I'll punch you anyway" game.
In fact, if a punch was all you got, you were so grateful for being left off easy you sacrificed a goat to Odin.
And we liked it, we loved it!
Know who else...
...The Van Burens!
“It's important to note that the "OK" symbol's status as a hate symbol is hotly debated.”
No, it really isn’t. Amazing how the media creates narratives out of thin air.
P.s. they were trolling and found some trolls. You’re welcome.

OMFG, this crap AGAIN? A nationally televised game with numerous dignitaries etc. in attendance do you seriously believe that they are making white supremacy gestures in the stands? Some of these Twitter SJWs clearly have a lot of time on their hands
Clearly our white supremacists need more unambiguous hand signals. Or do they?
Dog demands louder whistle, film at eleventy!111!!!
If you know what a dog whistle sounds like, that makes you a dog.
I want a better white whistle! Or do I?
But there's no doubt these cadets were flashing the Black Power fist and it was ruled fine:
Sorry, West Point cadets raising Black Power fists isn't offensive — here's why
So who cares if the cadets were flashing a White Power symbol?
1968. Mexico City. Black athletes raising their fists during the National Anthem.
I remember this more as a gay panic game. You put the circle over your crotch, the person looks down, you say, "why are you looking at my dick", and then you punch them. So, obviously, the kids are homophobes and should be kicked out of the academy.
You never played the circle game, have you?
I think this is the first article I've seen about colleges in Reason that isn't critical of the students, professors, or administrators. Reason seems to love military colleges in general, public funding notwithstanding.
"(During my own adolescence, we had a similar game: You could punch someone if you were the first to spot a specific kind of car—a Volkswagon Beetle or a P.T. Cruiser—and then that person couldn't hit you back.)"
Only if you called no punchbacks.
“ a campaign by far-right trolls to convince everyone that touching the thumb to the index finger formed a "W" and a "P" for "white power."”
I suspect they’re just anti-SJW trolls, which hardly makes them far-right by itself. That people, Mr. Soave included, are calling them “far-right” is yet another example of how gullible those journalists are, and how successful their trolling has been.
Woke = "I have my head up my ass, and I enjoy the view."
Here is our white supremacist President using this white power symbol.

Oh boy! What isn’t an offensive hand gesture to someone in the twatterverse nowadays? What is more disturbing is seeing “normal” people I have known for a long time suddenly afflicted with TDS/ acute progtardation where they actually believe this crap.
Oh, he didn't meant it! Are you looking for SMS tracker? Check our blog!
I thought that sign was just ASL for "asshole."
Which speaks to the point that it's an ambiguous hand gesture that can have a lot of different meanings, jumping to the conclusion that someone was using it for a very recent (and dubious) meaning instead of all the other more established meanings is idiotic.
God almighty, we used to do this in junior high school. I recognized it instantly. TDS is REAL, folks. November election cycle will end it, though, with mass Dem lemming-like jumps off buildings, no doubt. Oh, wait...not one single Dem even "left the country" when Trump got elected, as they'd promised. You people aren't even human.
