Saturday Night Live Fires New Cast Member Shane Gillis for Using Offensive Language
Comedy, meet cancel culture

Last week, Saturday Night Live announced that comedian Shane Gillis would be joining the cast. On Monday, the show reversed its decision.
"After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining 'S.N.L.,'" an NBC spokesperson said in a statement.
What happened? Twitter. Last Thursday, a journalist unearthed video footage of Gillis making offensive comments about Asian people during a comedy podcast. He also used homophobic language. In response, many on social media called for him to be fired.
Gillis offered a partial apology that was also a partial defense of his statements.
https://twitter.com/Shanemgillis/status/1172340437752807424
Needless to say, this did not satisfy the woke scolds, and thus NBC decided to end Gillis's Saturday Night Live career before it had even begun.
"We want 'S.N.L.' to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as a comedian and his impressive audition for 'S.N.L,'" said the NBC spokesperson. "We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard."
There's no First Amendment right to appear on Saturday Night Live, and thus Gillis's termination is not properly a free speech issue. I haven't listened to a single second of Gillis's comedy, and have zero opinion on the matter of whether he is funny. But I do happen to agree with Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who told CNN on Sunday that he opposed Gillis's firing.
"I believe that our country has become excessively punitive and vindictive about remarks that people find offensive or racist and that we need to try and move beyond that, if we can," said Yang. "Particularly in a case where the person is—in this case—a comedian whose words should be taken in a slightly different light."

The ultimate outcome will be similar to Disney, Marvel, et al locking away their characters behind copyright fences: fences work both ways. They may have protected the purity of their characters, but that purity excludes them from outside enrichment too.
All SNL has done is isolate themselves from the real world. If this guy is popular on his own, he had something to contribute, and SNL has lost that enrichment.
So what were the jokes, then?
Did the joke involve Coca-Cola products?
Just the bottle.
He'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company.

Not cool to make fun of the dead.
I dunno, but he really missed an opportunity to call the show he was fired from S.N.R.
To think Richard Pryor was once on SNL.
I guess they would never do the word association skit Pryor did with Chevy Chase.
Dear god, no. That would cause nationwide riots today.
They use the forbidden ninth level magic-user spell ‘Power Word: Nigger’.
Yes, and it was all scripted. Because, in the words of Johnny Carson, "Chevy Chase couldn't improvise a fart after a bean dinner."
When will SNL cancel itself for its problematic history with Belushi's Samurai, It's Pat, and Stuart Smalley?
That would be acceppuku.
Its Pat is mandatory now in this day of 1000 genders and none.
We Koch / Reason libertarians need to analyze cancel culture in terms of how it can promote our agenda.
As this example demonstrates, being declared "racist" now has severe personal and professional consequences. And progressives are rapidly embracing the idea that any restriction on immigration is inherently racist. See where I'm going with this?
Wouldn't it be great if cancel culture becomes so powerful, that opponents of open borders are effectively banned from every form of employment? It would signal the progressive / libertarian alliance's final victory over the alt-right white nationalists!

At least with a clever idiot you can admire the creativity. This isn't even clever.
"Look, I can tell Asian jokes because I'm Asian myself. I'm Caucasian.
"But at least I don't have an Asian cock."
See, that's textbook body-shaming right there. Extremely problematic.
The only time it's permissible to make fun of small penises is when you're asserting that gun fetishists have them.
"Asserting?" Merely "asserting"?!?!

Soon you'll be riding the Bocks Car to Dachau with material like that.
Comedy meet private corporations making decisions they feel are in their best interest. I mean, some VP decides to fire someone because a sponsor is threatening to pull out and that’s tyranny? Why?
You're still bad at this.
It’s the worst at it on this entire site. Which is really bad.
"our country has become excessively punitive and vindictive about remarks that people find offensive or racist"
No, one particular segment of our country has become excessively punitive and vindictive, and it's time the rest of us started aggressively cancelling them. Mutually assured destruction, baby!
"and it’s time the rest of us started aggressively cancelling them."
Already started. Haven't watched SNL for probably 25 years.
SNL was good when they had Norm McDonald, Mike Myers, and Dana Carvey. When did that end—around the early 90s? I haven’t watched it since. Not even once. I doubt I’ve missed anything.
The problem is that it's become an incestuous breeding ground for unfunny woke scolds.
Nobody's watched SNL since the 90s and we still got whatever talk show Jimmy Fallon hosts and Ghostbusters 3.
It went downhill when they hired tina fey, the self acclaimed bossy pants.
Yeah, that's when it went down. Early 2000s.
Mutually assured destruction, baby!
When one side wants to destroy the culture, I'm not sure that works out so well.
At this stage I think it would be imperative for every comedian that hasn't been offered a Hollywood job to get their own website and on the splash page just write every offensive thing you can think of. Just list racial slurs. Body shame. Make fun of gays. (Even if you're gay). Be sure to say something about the transgender people too. That way if they try to cancel you for something you said previously or in the future (which they will) you already said the worst shit right there on your website. You can only move up. If you're actually funny people will hire you because they want money.
Sigh. I remember once when I made an Asian joke by replacing an “r” with an “l” in an article about Asian hair salon workers and then Brian accused me of being a racist for the next two months. I guess Shane feels now how I felt then: pretty bad.
What are you talking about?
90210? Or some other stupid bullshit. Either way this account isn’t funny but thinks it is.
You don’t remember?!? You called me a racist for around 6 months. I was hurt, man.
Not hurt enough to die though.
Isn’t it convenient how Brian throws around accusations of racism and then “forgets” that he did it. Is he a humanities professor at Evergreen or something. Geesch, he sucks.
I’m sorry: I’m drawing a complete blank.

Why do you two give a shit? Its the internet.
What he said!
"There's no First Amendment right to appear on Saturday Night Live, and thus Gillis's termination is not properly a free speech issue."
Bullshit. The First Amendment and Free Speech are two different things. The First Amendment prohibits the government from violating our freedom speech. That doesn't mean that nobody else can.
Yeah, it's not a first amendment issue. But legal protections for free speech don't count for so much if free speech isn't a generally held cultural value.
"Bullshit. The First Amendment and Free Speech are two different things. "
+1, there is an obvious and well documented difference between the two and this Clearly is a Free Speech issue.
Free Speech doesn't mean that your employer is obligated to ignore your offensive speech.
It doesn't mean he's obligated to, but if he values freedom of expression, he should be reluctant to make dedicated inoffensiveness a condition of employment. If he chooses to try to control the speech of his employees, he is suppressing their freedom of speech, especially if those employees are creative artists whose craft depends upon pushing and violating the normal boundaries of expression. If, as in this case, the employer claims to value free expression of diverse views, but then silences employees who have "offended" someone, he's a hypocrite.
No, but when that same employer has tolerated all sorts of other people being purposefully offended by his product it does provide substantial clarity about where the employer stands.
When a fatwah was issued by the Ayatollah against Rushdie over The Satanic Verses, I considered it a Free Speech issue (my wife bought a copy in support of Free Speech).
Free Speech is separate from First Amendment.
But fanatical mobs silencing people and companies caving to loud minorities after twitter storms has become a Free Speech issue even if it does not rise to SCOTUS First Amendment level.
I do not accept the idea that as long as it's not the Congress doing it, your Free Speech can be silenced. We got too many twit heads with 280 character attention spans eager to mount their hobby horses and ride off to spear the next windmill that is the target of the outrage mob.
May Shane Gillis have a better career in comedy OUTSIDE SNL than he would have had within it.
I liked Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz, that's how long ago I thought SNL was regularly funny. Haven't seen it in years, is it still relevant?
Haven’t seen it in years, is it still relevant?
A monkey flinging shit is still relevant right? If you wanted to avoid getting shit like Jimmy Fallon or Kate McKinnon flung at you you'd pay attention to SNL if only to avoid it, right?
SNL is exactly what some guy above said it is: A "woke scold?" I never heard that before, but it sounds pretty accurate.
I fear SNL might soon start to have trouble making comedy.
They haven't made comedy in years. They run the show for clapter now.

"Jane, you ignorant slut."
No surprise, when people who don't believe anything in life is funny get to make decisions about funny.
Woke from New York it's Saturday Night Dead.
Seems to me, the problem here, and with 'cancel culture' generally, really isn't the canceling per se, but it is that the canceling tries to apply a certain rather narrow social standard to a heterogeneous population that does not all completely agree with that standard, and in so doing, trying to use social pressure to get people to comply with their standard more or less against their will.
I personally don't think, in this day and age, that it's appropriate to be telling ethnic jokes in public. There's just too many ways for those jokes to turn into hurt feelings. But if a person wants to tell ethnic jokes to his buddies, I think that he of course should have the right to do so, but moreover that there ought to be a certain social space where that type of behavior is permissible. Now we can argue about how big that social space ought to be. Should it extend beyond one's close intimate circle of friends? But I don't think there really ought to be anyone shaming or scolding the joke teller into not telling ethnic jokes when there's no one around to be offended.
“Seems to me, the problem here, and with ‘cancel culture’ generally, really isn’t the canceling per se,”
“I personally don’t think, in this day and age, that it’s appropriate to be telling ethnic jokes in public”
Little Jeffy in a nutshell folks.
You think those statements are contradictory?
You think opposition to 'cancel culture' necessarily means that one must support and encourage ethnic jokes?
My position isn't much different than Andrew Yang's on this matter, actually.
No I don’t think they’re contradictory you dope.
Saying that I don't think ethnic jokes are appropriate in public does not mean I want everyone telling ethnic jokes in public to be fired or shamed into submission.
It's too bad that you evidently can't see the difference between the two.
Its refreshing to see you so open about your authoritarianism. Keep carrying water for the fascists
What exactly is authoritarian about my position?
Perhaps there are more than two possible viewpoints, besides SHAME THEM ALL and LET'S HEAR MORE POLLOCK JOKES
It's 'Polack'
Pollock are fish.
A rabbi, a prostitute, and a pollock walk into a bar...
Pretty sure that costs extra Cotton.
Let me ask you this.
If, in your circle of friends, you heard one of your friends say something truly shocking and appalling, what would you do? Perhaps you might at first give your friend the benefit of the doubt.
But if your friend persisted in this behavior, what would you then do? Would you say "man that's horrible, but it's totally your right to say it and I will continue with our relationship as if nothing happened despite your disgusting viewpoint"? Some might do that, but a lot of other people would be justified in cutting this person out of their lives. That is a micro version of 'cancel culture' and there is nothing per se wrong with that. The pernicious part of 'cancel culture' is when people try to apply those same standards TO EVERYONE when they don't all agree that the behavior in question is all that shocking or appalling, or necessitating changing any friendship status at all.
There is nothing wrong with you refusing to be friends with someone whom you regard to be a horrible human being. That is my point. Do you disagree?
Or is this going to be one of those hit-and-run comments where you just offer some drive-by snark and then run away?
Here ya go - some ethnic joke etiquette:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/opinions/1987/06/11/ethnic-joke-etiquette/ee2c9cb6-e6df-4e2e-b65f-d590dde208d2/
I say if someone is in your life and they constantly bring you down, meaning nearly every interaction with them leaves you feeling exhausted, sad, or just emotionally drained, you should cut that friend out of your life. On the other hand, if someone seems to leave you smiling, energized, and feeling good about yourself, them, and the world most every time you interact with them, you should try to spend more time with that person.
Someone’s telling an inappropriate joke, or having a different opinion than you, or even occasionally saying something really controversial or wrong-headed, should not matter that much.
I will repeat a bit of wisdom I once read. I think it may have come from Hustler magazine. (Yeah, the magazine that singlehandedly ushered in my puberty):
“Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has their own. Most of them stink.”
The bottom line is, if you go sniffing around others’ opinions just to see if you find their opinions stink, you may be the one with the problem.
I completely agree with your first paragraph.
Someone’s telling an inappropriate joke, or having a different opinion than you, or even occasionally saying something really controversial or wrong-headed, should not matter that much.
As a general rule, you're probably right. But everyone has limits, and some people are prone to be more touchy about certain subjects than others.
Speaking only from my personal experience, I lost a good friend to suicide a little while ago. It was seriously a traumatic moment for me. And ever since then I just don't tolerate suicide jokes in my presence. I'll tell someone nicely to stop, but if they keep pushing it, then I'm going to get pissed off. And if that person's response is to dismiss my complaint with "don't be so PC" then that will only make things worse.
That is just my experience. Everyone has their own limits and taboos. And I don't think it is awful or terrible per se for people to just tell those who won't respect those limits or taboos, for whatever reason, to just stay out of their lives.
But if Tulpa and his buddies want to tell juvenile suicide jokes among themselves, then they should go right ahead. I won't stop them. I won't go hunting them down to tell them to stop, but I will tell them to stop if they try to inflict their offensive humor onto me.
I agree with what you wrote.
I think it’s possible to joke about most anything. That said, however, if someone is politely asked to not joke about a particular subject because of personal pain and their response is to persist or even dial it up some more, that makes them exactly the sort of energy-draining person who is not worth bothering with.
Speaking only from my personal experience, I lost a good friend to suicide a little while ago. It was seriously a traumatic moment for me. That's pretty fair. I have a friend whose girlfriend hates the word "retarded." In the spirit of being polite, I don't say the word around her. Just like, if I knew you in real life, I'd tip-toe around your sensitivities regarding suicide to maintain the friendship. Granted, I think our friendship would be slightly diminished (I prefer friends that use jokes to heal trauma, since I personally deal with my anxiety and sadness by making jokes - my friend committed suicide and jokes about suicide were cathartic for me in the aftermath), but that diminished friendship is okay, its life.
But if Tulpa and his buddies want to tell juvenile suicide jokes among themselves
Here's where you get narrow-minded. A lot of people use dark humor to heal from traumatic situations. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it, but you seem to consider your own way the be only the "adult" version. Just some food for thought.
" some people are prone to be more touchy about certain subjects than others."
They're the ones you should remove from your life.
Everyone is touchy about something. So, remove everyone from my life. Brilliant!
See this right here, Jeff--
Here’s where you get narrow-minded. A lot of people use dark humor to heal from traumatic situations. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it, but you seem to consider your own way the be only the “adult” version. Just some food for thought.
It's like you never stop to think that maybe people have some other way of dealing that's different from yours--you issue a warning and then what? cut them out? Or get angry if they've nothing to do with you and are just conversing amongst themselves.
you issue a warning and then what? cut them out?
Yes. That's how it works in my world.
Or get angry if they’ve nothing to do with you and are just conversing amongst themselves.
Not if they are not interacting with me, no. Because that's not in my world.
See how that works?

There is nothing wrong with you refusing to be friends with someone whom you regard to be a horrible human being. That is my point. Do you disagree?"
I live in SF. At a dinner one night, a friend who is Jewish claimed that the Chinese who live in 'the avenues' (west of Twin Peaks) refused to plant trees in their yards. I pointed out that folks of other ethnicities lived there also, and given the SF city government desire to control who grew what in their front yard, perhaps he was being a bit racist.
It was my fault; he had a conniption and we were no longer 'friends'.
Go ahead and defend him, Jeff; I'm sure you have much bullshit to share as you always do.
I am in no position to judge anything about your conversation. I wasn't there and I don't know any of the participants. Which is kind of the point. I shouldn't be in a position to judge any of it. That is between you and your friends (or former friends as the case may be).
Goddamn Pedo Jeffy, you are one worthless little loser. STFU and stay in Canada forever. And stay away from our kids you rapey piece of shit.
Context matters.
maybe he and Dave Chappelle can team up and make some actual comedy. Cause it's not gonna happen on SNL
Netflix seems to be the place if you want to do comedy. Dave Chappelle and Bill Burr have some pretty good stuff on there that came out recently. And it seems like no one is stopping them from saying whatever they want.
This episode could be chink in SNL's armor.
No, you really didn't, did you?

This is shocking.
I mean, who knew SNL was still on the air.
I thought the same thing. I don't know anyone that has watched the show in over a decade.
They lost me when they started letting the musical guests lip-sync.
Guy walks into the bar, tells the bartender, "I have this great new Polish joke, wanna hear it?"
Bartender says:
"Look, buddy, I'm Polish, the bouncer over there is Polish, the cop back there listening to you is Polish...are you *sure* you want to tell that joke?"
"OK," says the guy, "I'll tell it veeerrrry slowwwlyyyy..."

OK, so the preacher is preaching to his congregation.
"If I had all the beer in the world, I'd throw it in the river!"
"If I had all the wine in the world, I'd throw it in the river!"
"And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd throw every last drop of it in the river!"
Then the choir director gets up and says, "please turn in your hymnals to no. 23, 'Shall We Gather By the River.'"
It's a damn shame that his is what we have come to as a society. The guy did not even get the chance to be show that he could be a good comedian for SNL. Now whenever someone gets a predominant position in the public square old tweets are just gonna "resurface" as if they're trash buried in a landfill that just magically comes out of the ground.
SNL should have stuck to its guns and said said hes the best man for the job. He's a comedian for God's sake. What comedian can say they are batting 100% when it comes to telling jokes? Comedians tell bad jokes but in his case he told offensive jokes so what get over yourself.
Purposefully digging up old tweets and podcasts of people just so you can sensationalize it to get clicks in the 24 hour news cycle is cynical and disgusting. We should condemn anyone who does this in bad faith
I admit that I dislike Disney Star Wars, and especially the awful Last Jedi movie, but the whiny spoiled brat of a villain, Kylo Ren, had one great quote, “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.”
We are meant to learn from our mistakes and move on, not to suffer forever 30 years later for the dumb joke we told in junior high, or the time we drunkenly exposed ourselves at a college party.
All I can hope for is the people who make it their mission in life to unearth transgressions from the deep past to ruin people’s lives find out that karma is a real bitch and have their own lives ruined over some dumb mistake they made in their own youths. Only then will the madness stop.
The trap is that you can't know what will be considered a "transgression" thirty years from now. Words and deeds that young people today consider innocuous or at least forgivable might be tomorrow's unforgivable sins.

See Dana Carvey’s work *SNL 1986-1994 as Chinese store owner Ching Chang on several SNL sketches. WUT
I'm surprised they still put on SNL these days. Maybe they haven't realized that YouTubers have been making funnier content for a minuscule fraction of SNL's weekly budget for the past 15 years. Oh, and YT content costs the consumer way less and is more accessible.
Their audience is old people, but they're pandering to the young woke crowd who don't even subscribe to the archaic broadcast TV model (and never have), and definitely don't give a shit about looking this stuff up on the internet.
If they were smart, they'd pick up more offensive comics to re-ignite the SNL brand as something worth watching for the spectacle. Instead, they've basically slapped a "we're still old, and we're still boring" label on the show.
I haven't seen his jokes, have no idea what they are. But this marks the last nail in the coffin of white comedians. Dave Chappelle can make an off color joke because he's a POC. But this Gillis guy is pastier than white glue.
Could any of SNL's original cast survive in today's world?
"I haven’t seen his jokes, have no idea what they are. But this marks the last nail in the coffin of white comedians."
It really doesn't. Anyone can still be a comedian. Just stay the hell away from sitcoms and television shows in general. Same with movies. The comedians can still get jobs as comedy writers. I mean, it's not like the majority of these comedians on TV or in movies write the scripts.
Stick to platforms you can't be removed from. When you put your career into the hands of others expect to lose it these days.
As a long time fan of Shane (I have seen him live 3 times, and listened to every single podcast he put out), the thing that really sucks about this for him, is that thing he becomes famous for, wasn't even funny. He had other controversial stuff that was hilarious. The man is a genius comic and I hope he isn't just remembered for those stupid throw away lines. I suspect he will be fine, because is a great comic. I wasn't surprised they removed all their old podcasts, because I had a feeling they could kill the whole thing. That being said, they weren't anything worse than you can hear on the Bonfire (which often stars Shane) and that's on Comedy Central and Sirius XM.
The unearthed comments were racist and unfunny, and if you're telling jokes, you can't be racist unless you're also being funny.
SNL could have chosen to defend keeping him on and making it a big thing for who knows how long, or they could have just axed him and moved on, which seems like the more prudent decision for them.
Bill Burr and, on his heels, Bill Maher, are in danger of crossing the line from funny to shrill with their contempt for "millennial cancel culture." I'm with them, but they have to be funny too. The rules still apply to them. If you get a Netflix special, the millennials aren't cancelling you.
"The unearthed comments were racist and unfunny"
Glad to hear that the resident wokescold believes it wasn't funny, too. I admit I was curious.
I'll forgive you for confusing me with some of my more histrionic comrades. I like edgy humor. The edgier the better. But it does have to be funny.
I'd like to see 'wokescold' listed in the next DSM update.
"'SNL could have chosen to defend keeping him on and making it a big thing for who knows how long, or they could have just axed him and moved on, which seems like the more prudent decision for them."'
Or they could have ignored the criticism and hired him anyway.
You're speaking on behalf of hindsight though.
If people don't push boundaries and fall flat on their face we can't test what is funny and what isn't. We'll just keep telling the same joke because it's safe. That's why SNL isn't funny now. They don't do what they used to do. When you push the boundaries expect to fall flat on your face 50 times for each 1 time you don't. The comics that take the chances are the best ones. Otherwise, you might as well just read a script.
NL could have chosen to defend keeping him...or they could have just axed him and moved on
There was a third option. They could have kept him and ignored the whiners.
I can envision a scenario where they deal with the controversy by putting this guy in a scene with the new Asian guy and blah blah, but as a business decision this seems to make more sense than forcing a strategy to deal with this guy's mistakes.
I watch a lot of stand-up. It's as edgy as ever. Lately some of the brave anti-PC warriors are getting strident, though, and not being funny is the only crime in comedy. "If you didn't like that joke, you're an asshole!" Not a good look.
"We want 'S.N.L.' to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show"
Funniest line to emerge from SNL in years.
I definitely don't want him to get cancelled or anything but can I say that I'm just surprised that no one's tried to tap Bill Burr.
What can you cancel Burr from? What show can he get fired from? His own podcast? He's like Chappelle or Rogan. They're somewhat immune to this because they are responsible for their own paychecks and not a massive corporation. Netlfix knows they're paydirt so they offer them specials. Comedy clubs or theaters are going to allow them because not only do they sell out, but they wind up doing additional shows when time permits. (That sell out)
People will complain about this SNL guy and then instead of it just being ignored and vanishing SNL makes a move to fire him and we hear about it more. With Burr they can make noise and it just dies off because there is no one there to make the next move.
You're right - I should have been more specific. I'm surprised that a Vox/Medium/Slate article hasn't come out with the headline, "Bill Burr - Has He Gone Too Far?".
"Saturday Night Live Fires New Cast Member Shane Gillis for Using Offensive Language.
"Offensive language?"
WTF is "offensive language?"
Oh, that's right.
It's anything the hyper-sensitive snowflake producers don't like.
My bad.
It's never about the what, it's always about the who.
There are right people to offend and wrong people to offend.
My wife and I, her sister and husband, sat up and watched Saturday Night Live in the early 1970s. Back when it was funny. Great memories of the four of us watching SNL together. Even if some of the jokes offended me, I got over it. Opinions are like people, every derriere orifice has 'em. Since then, my wife died, my BIL died, I've lost touch with my SIL. Now that SNL is woke PC, I have only old memories of when SNL was funny and challenging.
I'll bet if he had joked about declaring NRA members domestic terrorists and dropping hellfire missiles down their chimneys from drones that would have gone over as hillaryous.
As you and others have pointed out, SNL has had some really offensive things on their show in the past. Just like Shane's past.
Why are we just stopping at Shane? Why aren't we canceling SNL? If past statements or actions are cause for removal then why is the show safe? They should be removed from television for their past transgressions. It's only logical if this is the logic we are using.
Even Reason magazine has been compromised.

You’re welcome faggot.
The whole point of making a big deal out of collectivism is to be able to single out racial collectivism and pretend it's home big fat hairy deal, like Dorothy with a bucket of water, and the TV snowflakes can on cue shriek "I'm melting, I'm melting" with everyone stifling rather than laughing them of the stage.
