The driver behind the fatal Charlottesville car attack has received a second sentence.

The attack took place during an alt-right ally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, when James Alex Fields, Jr., now 22, purposefully sped his car into a crowd of counterprotesters. One woman, 32-year-old Heather Heyer, died after he hit her. More than two dozen were injured.

On Monday, Judge Richard Moore of Virginia handed Fields a sentence of life imprisonment plus 419 years for Heyer's death. Moore did so based on a recommendation from a state jury.

The ruling is essentially symbolic, since Fields has already received another life sentence. After pleading guilty in March to 29 of the 30 federal hate crimes charges that he faced in connection to the attack, Fields was sentenced to life in prison.

"Every day I think about how things could have gone differently and how I regret my actions," Fields told the court during his June sentencing. "I'm sorry."

Susan Bro, Heyer's mother, said that she was "relieved" after Monday's sentencing.

I would not be surprised if they brought back drawing and quartering for this guy if they could.

I would not be surprised if they brought back drawing and quartering for this guy if they could.

Virginia allows capital punishment (the death penalty) but only for specific cases:

"Capital offenses include willful, deliberate, premeditated killing: In connection with abduction for extortion of money or pecuniary benefit; for hire; committed while confined to state correctional facility; armed robbery; rape, sodomy; law officer for purposes of interfering with official duties; multiple murders; victim in commission of abduction, intended to extort money or for pecuniary benefit; controlled substance; outrageously or wantonly vile, horrible or inhuman; continuing serious threat to society; willful killing of a pregnant woman by person who knows woman is pregnant; any person under 14 by a person 21 and older; act of terrorism"

Or being born to the wrong mother and doctor...

        1. Charles Easterly   6 years ago

I am unfamiliar with your reference, NashTiger. To what are you referring?

      2. CGN   6 years ago

Yeah, what the Hell is up with these White Supremecists? How damn dumb does a person have to be, and wicked, to believe what these idiots believe? It is one thing to hold wicked beliefs, but quite another to act them out. Hang this wicked male (he's not a man) from his stones and let those he hurt watch and applaud.

"Heather Heyer's mother Susan Bro said she feels James Fields life plus 419 year sentence will send message to other white supremacists that it's unacceptable in Charlottesville and elsewhere."

    Wait.

    What's unacceptable?

Did the judge sentence him for what he believed or for what he did?

Purposely plowing your car into a crowd of people is unacceptable.

Believing awful things is stupid, racist, ugly, and awful, but I don't know if "unacceptable" is the right word. Believing what you want and saying it out loud is protected by the First Amendment--no matter how stupid, racist, ugly awful.

    1. Old Mexican - Mostly Harmless   6 years ago

      Hello, Ken!

---"Did the judge sentence him for what he believed or for what he did?"---

What he did is aggravated by what he believed. This wasn't some driving accident and yes, wgiye supremacists are in notice: you will not be able to terrorize people with impunity.

      1. John   6 years ago

        This wasn’t some driving accident

That is why he was convicted of murder you fucking half wit. His reasons for doing it only matter as it goes to intent.

You are not only a disgusting human being, you are retarded to make up for it.

      2. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

However, if believe the right things, we will look the other way as you terrorize people people with impunity. See Antifa.

        1. Moderation4ever   6 years ago

Did any Antifa protesters run a car into a crowd? Did they march through the streets with Tiki torches and chant racist slogan? Did they shoot up a church, synagogue, or temple? I think looking to Antifa as a counter balance to white supremacists is a pretty far stretch. Antifa is obnoxious, little more. But white supremacists, also obnoxious, have more history and that why they frighten people more.

          1. Marshal   6 years ago

Did any Antifa protesters run a car into a crowd?...

One hit someone in the back of the head with a bike lock while others prevented people from pursuing him as he escaped afterward. Another antifa member tried to attack ICE.

"Man Attacking ICE Detention Center Is Fatally Shot by the Police
The man was armed with a rifle and was throwing “incendiary devices” on Saturday in Tacoma, Wash., officials said."

            Google: tacoma-detention-center-shooting

            Antifa is obnoxious, little more.

            Always with the excuses.

          2. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

Did any Antifa protesters run a car into a crowd? Did they march through the streets with Tiki torches and chant racist slogan? Did they shoot up a church, synagogue, or temple?

Everyone knows Antifa protesters can't do anything wrong.

Antifa protesters are like communism--when people get outraged at their disgusting violence they magically morph into 'not-antifa'

      3. Dillinger   6 years ago

        >>>What he did is aggravated by what he believed.

        dude, no.

      4. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

No one should have to point out to an anarchist that the government has no business punishing people for what they think.

        1. Zeb   6 years ago

Yeah, OM's turn to TDS is striking. He was always a bombastic weirdo, but I didn't see this coming.

      5. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

This wasn’t some driving accident and yes, wgiye supremacists are in notice: you will not be able to terrorize people with impunity.

Damn. Calm down, wetback. Take your time. We know you're not too good at habling the anglo, so just go slow, and let your hate flow.

You'll write clearer, and you won't have to wipe that spittle flecked screen so often.

  3. Old Mexican - Mostly Harmless   6 years ago

So many Trumpis... Sorry, white suprema... No, on second thought and in light of the president's doubling-down on personally deciding who is worthy of being a true American, Trumpistas are shedding tears for that good patriot who mowed down unpatriotic malcontents who should go back to their own countries.

    1. John   6 years ago

God you are disgusting. You really are. A woman died here. The asshole who did it get's what he deserved and all you can think of is TRUMP!

Did you want to grow up to be a politics obsessed soulless moron or did it just kind of come to you?

      1. Old Mexican - Mostly Harmless   6 years ago

Yes, I can think Trump. The woman didn't simply "die", you asshole. He was murdered by one of the president's white supremacist admirers who felt emboldened.

        1. John   6 years ago

He was murdered by one of the president’s white supremacist admirers who felt emboldened.

He felt emboldened by Trump? So I guess every antifa idiot is emboldened by Democrats. Go die in a fire Mexican. You are a racist, disgusting piece of shit.

          1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   6 years ago

"He felt emboldened by Trump? So I guess every antifa idiot is emboldened by Democrats."

            No. Wrong. False equivalence.

Old Mexican is exactly right. Stop trying to whitesplain.

          2. Zeb   6 years ago

People were so sure that Trump was some horrible racist, but it seems like "he emboldens them" is pretty much all they have outside of his provocative remarks about various classes of immigrants, which isn't really racism per se.
But you can't really hold a person responsible for what other people think he believes. I'm sure all the black supremacists thought Obama was their guy.

      OM-MH!

Haven't heard from you in ages! It's almost like you came out to celebrate this woman's death and the hyper-zealous sentencing of her killer like some morally bankrupt buzzard. It's almost like you're trying to be a complete shit bag.

    3. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

Trumpistas are shedding tears for that good patriot who mowed down unpatriotic malcontents who should go back to their own countries.

No they're not. There are people, however, who are shedding tears for other extremists.

      Rest In Power brother.

    4. Zeb   6 years ago

I don't throw TDS around a lot. Plenty of valid criticism gets tarred with that epithet. But I'm afraid you might have it, OM.

    5. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Antifa activist featured on CNN attacked an ICE detention center and attempted to set fire to large tanks of propane, which would have killed people, including the very people who was supposedly wanting to help over the weekend. Yeah, it's only Trump supporters, idiot.

    6. damikesc   6 years ago

Funny, Trump specifically said the white supremacists should not be excused at all. Figured you'd at least watch a full video or something. Disappointment abounds.

  4. Fats of Fury   6 years ago

This domestic terrorist only killed one person? Terrorist drivers in Europe usually kill in the dozens. The DMV needs to bring additional charges against Fields too.

  5. Live Cheap or Free   6 years ago

"The ruling is essentially symbolic, since Fields has already received another life sentence."

Yes, it's that pesky 5th Amendment and the stupid separate sovereigns doctrine. Why waste the money other than to practice their cocksure strut.

All I know is that if I get caught in a riot like Reginald Denny, I'm driving as hard as I can through it all.

    1. Live Cheap or Free   6 years ago

Just to be clear, I get this clown is no Reginald Denny.

I wonder how it could have happened that this murderer is actually being punished, being as this country is a horrible den of white supremacy. Or so I'm told.

    1. Eddy   6 years ago

They drew straws. Someone had to take one for the team, to get the heat off the rest.

Duh, don't you even conspiracy theory, bro?

    2. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

The GRU decided he was expendable, that is why Trump met with Putin at an international conference.

  8. Eddy   6 years ago

    "life plus 419 years"

So with time off for good behavior, he'll be out in 10 years?

/just a little joke, I doubt he's getting out except in a box.

    1. Kevin Smith   6 years ago

That's actually the reason they give those seemingly silly sentences, so that even with time off for good behavior and personal improvement they still can never hope to be released

      1. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Which kind of begs the question is our justice system punitive or restorative?

        1. Marshal   6 years ago

Neither, it's protective. How many more people will he run over while he's in prison?

          1. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

That is an extremely scary concept. The idea you can lock someone up forever because of their beliefs. Or do you discount the ability to rehabilitate any murderer?

            1. Marshal   6 years ago

The idea you can lock someone up forever because of their beliefs.

What an absurd assertion. He's not being locked up for his beliefs. He's being locked up because he killed someone with his car.

  9. Fist of Etiquette   6 years ago

Every day I think about how things could have gone differently and how I regret my actions...

Or at least the consequences of them.

  10. MelvinUpton   6 years ago

Doesn't the fact that this guy got murder 1 plus a bunch of federal hate crime charges prove that this is just a spiteful show trial? Shouldn't it be worrisome that principles of law can so easily be ignored if the defendant is hated enough?

    1. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Double jeopardy is such an outdated concept. Gees check you white privilege.

  11. Fancylad   6 years ago

    THE WHITE NATIONALIST...
    WHITE...
    NATIONALIST...

Oh look, our no-borders, globalist Reason team is trying to equate nationalism with white supremacy again.

    1. Zeb   6 years ago

      They are?
Is "white nationalist" an inaccurate way to describe the guy??

While they are pretty insignificant and irrelevant, there are people who want a white ethno-state.

    2. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

Not all nationalists are white supremacists.
But some white supremacists are also nationalists.
      Get it?

      1. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Not all white supremacists necessarily are nationalist either, get it? I'm sure we can find some globalist white supremacists.

  12. Zeb   6 years ago

    That'll show him.
But I think one sentence that keeps him locked up forever is probably sufficient.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

He's misunderstood and a product of the system, maaan. Locking him up in a cage is inhumane.

    2. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

That begs the question that if we do discover a treatment that extends life into centuries, would those receiving life sentences be able to get it? And if not, isn't that the same then as a death sentence? Well, kind of?

      1. LiborCon   6 years ago

        “That begs the question…”

No it doesn’t. It raises the question.

        Begging the Question:
Any form of argument where the conclusion is assumed in one of the premises. Many people use the phrase “begging the question” incorrectly when they use it to mean, “prompts one to ask the question”. That is NOT the correct usage.

        1. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Oh for fuck sake. Do you want to have an intelligent, abstract debate or be pendantic about a common turn of phrase?

  13. Dillinger   6 years ago

whole thing rings too much Crucible / Scarlet Letter

  14. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

    This is a tweet.

    1. Zeb   6 years ago

I have no idea what to make of that.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

That the theory that they're not teaching history in public school is true?

      2. soldiermedic76   6 years ago

Looking at his Twitter feed he talks about jerking off continuously, what he pulls out of people's ears, about his kid and his pregnant girlfriend, and going on dates with guys from the internet and going on dates with other girls besides his preggo gf and how much he hates Brexit. He sounds like a real douchebag who likes to virtue signaling.b

  15. Nardz   6 years ago

    Why is this a story?

  16. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

After pleading guilty in March to 29 of the 30 federal hate crimes charges that he faced in connection to the attack, Fields was sentenced to life in prison.

The real story is that this guy plead guilty to 29 of 30 federal crimes. He PLEAD GUILTY. No trial.

    1. Sheldonius Rex   6 years ago

He pled guilty because you always play ball with federal prosecutors. Always. No matter what, you always have at least one more thing to lose. If nothing else, they could just reccomend that you get housed with a black nationalist in a cell block exclusively made up of black panthers.

You always play ball with the feds. Unless you have a suicide vest. Those little guys really free up your options when dealing with U.S. Attorneys.

  17. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

The man has nothing to lose and the courts have sent him to retire with the Aryan Brotherhood.

To whom he'll be a hero.

    Good Job!

  18. Sheldonius Rex   6 years ago

The man who has received a life sentance was being chased by a violent mob. The fatass antifa thug was trying to stop his car so the mob could drag him out if it and beat him to death. She did not get ran over, she rolled on to the hood of his car. Her injuries were not life threatening, she died of a heart attack because she was a disgusting fatass. He was only acting in self defense. Prove me wrong.
