Brickbat: Respect Our Authority

Detroit cops suspected artist Sheefy McFly was vandalizing an aqueduct. He was actually painting a mural commissioned by a city program. He didn't have his work permit with him, but a city official showed up to tell the cops he was working on a city project. The police still arrested McFly, charging him with resisting arrest, obstruction of an officer and an outstanding traffic warrant. He spent 24 hours in jail before being released. Brad Dick, who oversees the city's mural program, says they always coordinate with local police precincts to make sure they are aware when work is going on but the cops who arrested McFly were not from any of the precincts in that area.

There was already a Reason article about this, with a number of comments. What happened?
Back to the Future, McFly.
I thought I told you not to come in here, you Irish bug.
It's still here.
It's not just the commentariat who don't RTFA.
can you please link it here? i need more info about this...
...they always coordinate with local police precincts to make sure they are aware when work is going on but the cops who arrested McFly were not from any of the precincts in that area.
Cops don't have to stay in their lane.
Gotta go where the donuts are.
You spelled authoritah wrong.
Another arrest for resisting arrest...
Yeah but did he ever say he wasn't resisting?
As McFly tried to explain the situation to the police, he said more officers arrived with “four or five police cars” on site.
The suspect may be armed with a paint brush... must call for backup.
A paint brush can be used to paint a gun. Can't have that.
Those new cops were out of their jurisdiction too? Or was this just professional courtesy?
"Hey guys, an out of district cop found a black guy to beat up! Let's go give him a proper Detroit welcome and cheer him on!"
For real, there is so little work done, any time someone has an interesting call, everyone drops the donut and rushes over. It's like when gossip happens in a cube farm, everyone pops up and leans in.
True art comes from suffering.
Next city contract: murals inside Detroit jail cells.
Next city contract: Do nothing and collect $$$ from the police department.
The police still arrested McFly, charging him with resisting arrest, obstruction of an officer and an outstanding traffic warrant.
That's what happens when you Drive 88 MPH in a parking lot.
He might be libertarian tho.
"Where we're going, we don't*need* roads!"
*applause*
Please consider yourself upvoted.
If you don't want to be treated like a thug, don't paint [city commissioned] murals like a thug. And then try to tell the cops about it when they show up to arrest you like a thug.
There are some thugs in Detroit. Therefore, all residents are thugs.
- cop logic
Reality: In Detroit, the cops are the thugs.
+1,000,000
a thousand times over the entire situation is ridiculous but also if permit, bring permit ... stupid. it's *Detroit*
I think you have dumbasses who shouldn't be left unsupervised through out the country.
Most of them carry badges and guns.
I though cops could only arrest people in their own district so how come these cops did? or do they share duties? more questions that no one wants answers to.
My understanding is that municipal police officers would have jurisdiction everywhere in the municipality, even if normally assigned to work a specific sub-area of the municipality, because their authority derives from the municipality.
Brad Dick is a great name for a local bureaucrat.
"Our authority?"
You may want to investigate who and where gave you that authority.
