Iran Will Exceed Nuclear Stockpile Limit in Response to U.S. Sanctions
Plus: Oberlin College must pay $33 million for aiding student activists' defamatory campaign against a local bakery.

Iranian officials announced their uranium stockpiles will soon exceed the limits the country agreed to as part of the 2015 nuclear agreement.
President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement last year and brought sanctions against Iran.
"If Iran feels that the sanctions have been reinstated or not lifted, Iran has the right to partly or on the whole suspend its commitments," said Behrouz Kamalvandi, Iran's Atomic Energy spokesperson.
This news follows several days of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The Trump administration has accused Tehran of damaging two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, "there is no doubt," that Iran was responsible, and that "the intelligence community has lots of data, lots of evidence," which is not completely reassuring, for obvious reasons. The oil tanker's Japanese owner maintains that the ship was struck by a "flying object," not a mine. Nevertheless, Sen. Tom Cotton (R–Ark.) is agitating for conflict and told PBS that two military strikes would be enough to incapacitate the country. In reality, of course, a full-blown war with Iran—a country three times larger than Iraq—would necessitate the involvement of tens of thousands of ground troops.
Given its unfeasibility, the military option should be virtually off the table. No one should want—let alone be actively working toward—a war. Trump has previously claimed that U.S. involvement in Iraq and Libya was a mistake. He should apply those lessons to his own administration's Iran policy, and work out a diplomatic solution.

Conservatives are rejoicing after a jury awarded $33 million in punitive damages to a bakery that had sued Oberlin College for defamation. Student activists had falsely accused Gibson's Bakery of racism, and internal emails showed that Oberlin administrators actively coordinated with and supported the students. According to The New York Times:
The dispute began on Nov. 9, 2016, when an Oberlin student tried to pay for a bottle of wine with a fake ID, and the store clerk noticed that the student had hidden two more bottles of wine under his coat, according to court papers.
The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf takes a more cautionary tone:
I celebrate the happy ending for the Gibsons, but not without some trepidation about the downsides of adjudicating culture-war fights or the proper administration of America's colleges in court, where extreme cases can mean cathartic outcomes and bad law. It would be a shame if jurors intent on vindicating the wrongly maligned wound up severely chilling protected speech too.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Trump is "perfectly happy" to proceed with tariffs that would affect an additional $300 billion in Chinese goods. According to CNBC:
"We will eventually make a deal, but if we don't, the president is perfectly happy with continuing the tariff movements that we've already announced, as well as imposing the new ones that he has temporarily suspended," Ross said.
His comments directly echo those of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin last week, indicating that the administration is unified on its plan in the event that talks fall apart.
Trump is also considering tariffs an all auto imports, including those from the European Union.

Speaking of coming...Trump just grabbed Iran by the Persian Rug.

The Gibsons accused the college; its dean of students, Meredith Raimondo; and others of actively supporting the protesters. Oberlin officials bought them pizza, authorized the use of student funds to pay for gloves for the cold weather and helped them to hand out fliers urging a boycott of the store, according to court papers.
Seems like support.

All we need is a butcher and a candlestick maker to really set these Lefty Fascists back.
Adam Smith would say, a butcher and a brewer.

Yeah, except the students weren't the defendants, school administrators were.
And slander isn't protected speech.
If the administrators have to pay out, then maybe they'll stop encouraging activists to attend Oberlin. And you know they do. You cant' get into college with a 4.0 these days. You need "community service". So they look for students who show their SJW bona fides in the community "service".
The real problem are the parents. These affluent white progressives keep paying their kids tuition for their victim studies degrees. Oberlin ain't Midstate College, it's an elite private school for the children of affluent white progressives.
The real problem is us! We need to stop hiring graduates from Oberlin. That only encourages. The name Oberlin should be a permanent black mark on one's record. As an employer I'm not allowed to check on the wokeness or un-wokeness of an applicant, but I sure as hell can check if they went to Oberlin or one of the other special snowflake schools.

i can't believe no one on the internet found a way to make a joke about "no brainer"
The president is the no brainer. Am I right?
The no brainer is that none of Trump's supporters, including the yahoos at this site, have a problem with Trump wanting to ban flag burning.
And there goes my idea of patriotic firewood.
Dont have a problem with it? Based on your fevered and ignorant machinations? You're so idiotic you have to invent strawmen to burn down?

Hate hoaxes and defamation aren't protected speech. What happened with Oberlin is no different than what happens when companies are targeted for lawsuits for the bad behavior of their employees, when representing themselves as members of such.
The students of Oberlin and the Jabba the Hutt-looking Dean of Students, who went out of her way to wind these people up and whose background screams "Pissed because no man other than Crusty thinks she's attractive," leveraged their hate to convince the college to terminate its business relationship with Gibson's, which has been a part of the town almost as long as the college has. When voices of reason tried to get these same exceptional individuals to back off, Raimondo's response was "Fuck them" and "If I had my way, I'd unleash the students."
Never forget that these people are your enemies, and there's no reasoning with them.
National Review's David French sees this outcome as a blueprint for deterring the most noxious and illiberal forms of student activism
The only thing that will substantively deter it to any extent is expulsion. But because the colleges are largely on the same page as these students and encourage and enable this behavior, targeting their endowments will have to be
And now, thanks to a happy coincidence of a Marxist college showing its ass in a dispute against a business that's been part of the town's social fabric for generations, when that town already views the school as a glorified insane asylum, we have a legal precedent in place to make these institutions hurt when they don't tard-wrangle their more exceptional students and staff members.

And you think this precedent won't be used against right winger organizatios? There are plenty of churches that should now be sued and bankrupted for organizing defamatory encirclements of medical businesses. Abortion is protected by the constitution so it's by definition not murder. So when these people call abortion murder and the doctors and nurse murderers they are defaming. I hope the courts overturn this ridiculous verdict but if they don't I hope the right wing fever swamp ckokes on it.
There's nothing ridiculous about this verdict, and the fact that left-wingers hate it shows that it was the right decision.
Most reputable churches specifically counsel their anti-abortion protesters to follow the law and not block entrances, stay the required distance away, not harangue visitors, do not scream, etc. Instead it's a tiny few churches and many non-church organizations that are doing this.
You would never know it from the mainstream media, however, who magnifies every such ill behaved protest as if it were routine.
But it's still defamation to publicly express the belief that providing an abortion is killing.
But it’s still defamation to publicly express the belief that providing an abortion is killing.

Go try that in court if you think so then.
What a stupid fucking statement.

I do think this precedent will be used against right-wing organizations but the rest of your comment just fails.
Abortion is not "protected by the constitution" - the mother's right of autonomy and privacy are what's protected. Furthermore, calling a doctor a murderer is not defamation. That's a very specific legal term with a specific definition. Under no interpretation of this precedent does calling a doctor a murderer meet that definition.
This is truly humorous--

USDA employees silently protest Trump administration’s plan to move jobs to Kansas City
That legislation stands a stronger chance in the Democratic-controlled House, where House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, is an outspoken critic of the Trump’s administration’s plan to move federal jobs out of the capital region.
[…]Among the main reasons in favor of the move is that Kansas City is closer to the heartland. But a more obvious reason is that it will save $300 million over 15 years, according to the USDA. Office space is cheaper in Kansas City, and so are salaries in the long run.
Maybe reason will cover this Trump plan to rollback government in ways that he can.
But for USDA employees with family and professional ties to the D.C. region, the Trump’s administration’s plan to move their jobs from Washington to the Midwest is bitter news.
"Family and professional ties to the D.C. region" just means they've been far too entrenched in Versailles on the Potomac.
No other American has ever had his employer relocate!
KC's barbecue is better than anything they can get in their overpriced bars and fine dining restaurants anyhow. They should be grateful to moved to such a food mecca.
This is absolutely the kind of thing Reason should be in favor of. It’s not a massive cut, but it’s a pretty big one, and moves to make the department much cheaper to run.
Disclaimer that there should be no USDA at all.

Some of you may remember me linking over and over again to Mexican officials and the Trump administration outlining the basics of the deal that led to Trump dropping the tariff threats against Mexico. I've repeatedly linked to various sources reporting that it has the same outline:
Mexico will do their best to stem the flow of asylum seekers. After 45 days, the effectiveness of their efforts will start being quantified. If their efforts to stem the flow of asylum seekers to the U.S. across Mexican territory haven't been effective, then within 90 days, Mexico's senate will consider a bill to designate themselves a "third safe country". In harmony with the Constitution, our ratified treaties, and U.S. law, doing so will mean that asylum seekers who set foot in Mexico first will become ineligible for asylum in the U.S.
Last I remember, Reason staff were still confused about whether any deal existed. They reported that Trump said he had a deal in his hand, but that he wouldn't show it anyone--and HD photos of the deal in his hand were hard to read. Is Trump bluffing about this secret deal? Does he really have any deal at all?
Mexico released the terms of the deal over the weekend:
"MEXICO CITY—Mexico released the side agreement made with the U.S. that outlines additional measures it would take if it fails to stem a surge in migration from Central America to the U.S., including becoming a “safe third country.”
The supplementary agreement signed June 7 between the two countries shows that Mexico will require migrants fleeing their homelands through Mexico to seek asylum there. Mexico agreed to examine domestic laws and regulations to identify necessary changes to implement the side agreement.
. . . .
The supplementary agreement shows that the “safe third country” designation is a key element of the deal that averted a threat of punitive U.S. tariffs on Mexican imports. Its disclosure came after President Trump tweeted Monday that the two countries had “fully signed and documented another very important part of the Immigration and Security deal with Mexico” that would require a vote by Mexican lawmakers.
Under the terms of the side agreement, if the U.S. determines “at its discretion and after consultation with Mexico” after 45 days that the measures adopted by Mexico haven't sufficiently achieved results in addressing the flow of migrants to the U.S. southern border, “Mexico will take all necessary steps under domestic law to bring the agreement into force.”
https://www.wsj.com/articles/mexicos-releases-terms-of-migration-deal-with-trump-11560566904?
Bloomberg, Reuters, WSJ, they've all said the same thing for weeks. Hell, I quoted these terms as integral to Trump's demands before his administration met with Mexico and negotiated this agreement. Throughout all of it, Reason staff have continued to pretend that Trump's demands were mysterious and unknown--to the point of even questioning whether there really was an agreement at all!
Assuming they continue to report on this story without knowing any of the facts Bloomberg, Reuters, and the Wall Street Journal have reported . . . I'm not sure that's giving them the benefit of the doubt. Is it better to be honestly oblivious or deliberately so? I guess it depends on whether it's better to be stupid or devious. All that being said, I'm not sure you can write about the same story for so long and honestly be that oblivious. Surely, you can't be willfully oblivious without being devious.
I'm just sayin'.

I think the Navy and Air Force would disagree with you on that. Eliminating their nuclear capability, and most of their military forces would not require an invasion. Just a willingness to do so. A 'full blown' war does not imply occupation, just elimination of their military, and political leadership.

It’ll be such a cakewalk that they’ll welcome us as liberators, right?
You keep believing that if you want.
History will just keep on proving you wrong.
"Iranian officials announced their uranium stockpiles will soon exceed the limits the country agreed to as part of the 2015 nuclear agreement."
That's interesting.
Does that mean they're enriching uranium in secret?
Enriching uranium in secret is a violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. That's what got them in trouble in the first place. It's certainly not a good reason to drop international sanctions now.
John Dillinger announcing that he's been robbing banks and will continue to rob banks unless all charges of bank robbery are dropped against him--that's a terrible reason to drop charges.
Iran is desperate. It's shocking to see what they'd rather do than come back into compliance with the NPT. Before Trump reimposed sanctions, inflation in Iran was near 9%. Now, it's up to 57% annually. They'd rather attack oil tankers in the Persian Gulf than come back into compliance with the NPT, and they'd rather suffer sanctions than come back into compliance with the NPT.
Does anyone really believe that they care so much about being free to enrich their own uranium--just because they want it for civilian use? When Russia and China would be perfectly willing to sell them uranium that has already been enriched sufficiently for civilian use, why would they be willing to subject their economy to so much pain--unless the reason is that they want to enrich uranium for military use in violation of the NPT?
One thing is for sure, Hillary would have sent even larger pallets of cash to Iran if she was Prez.
Some Americans don't realize how big of a bullet we dodged with the Hag losing.
I agree that even if people don't like what Trump is doing, he looks a lot better than what probably would have happened if Hillary were president.
I suspect she might have invaded Syria (on a limited basis, no doubt). She certainly wouldn't have worked with Putin to defeat ISIS in Syria.
I suspect she probably would have used the Las Vegas shooting as an excuse to come after our gun rights. If all Trump did was hit us with a bumpstock ban, we certainly dodged a bullet there (no pun intended).
She'd have doubled down on ObamaCare rather than rescinded every part she could.
There are so many ways that the prospect of President Hillary was worse than the reality of Trump, it's hard to count them all. I'm seeing the same kind of calculation on other issues in the comparison of Trump to Sanders or Trump to Warren. It isn't just about Trump being good on issue a, b, and c. It's also about how bad the Democrats are on issues x, y, and z.
$33 Million from Oberlin. The Oberlin administrators don't care. No price is too high to kowtow to the students.
This might actually be a new business model for the city. Leave all public financing to the college! Affluent white progressives send their students to Oberlin College, the college gets sued, the college pays out, the college raises tuition, the level of affluence required to send your precious snowflakes to the college, rises, and everyone wins. The college can end up sending a steady stream of payments to every business in the city. Need to repair the sidewalks? Get the kids to protest the sidewalks! Win! Win!
$33 Million from Oberlin. The Oberlin administrators don’t care.
They have an endowment between $800 million to $1 billion. It's a drop in the bucket for them.
Which begs the question why the feds are subsidizing loans to their students. The colleges with large endowments should self insure their own loans.
Have you seen how they double downed?
