Americans Want Drug Companies to Pay for Opioid Addiction

More than 70 percent of Americans think pharmaceutical companies should cover the costs associated with opioid addiction and overdoses, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll. And 57 percent say these companies should be forced to pay in some unspecified and undirected way as punishment.

The poll was conducted April 12-17 with a nationally representative sample of 1,510 respondents.

With one in three respondents saying they know someone who suffers from an addiction or has overdosed on opioids, it's no wonder that people are angry, exasperated, and bewildered about how best to help. Nonetheless, the poll results are disappointing.

Specific unscrupulous promotion and prescribing behavior can be addressed without blaming all drug companies that make opioid-based drugs—a broad category of medications that are crucial for many legitimate medical reasons and used responsibly by many patients and physicians.

And big pharmaceutical settlements with state governments or the feds won't actually get back to ordinary people—or at least not in the helpful ways hoped. Time and again, settlements of this sort go to unspecified state expenses or, worse, back to law enforcement agencies for more of the same old attempts to arrest our way out of social problems. Individuals and communities struggling with opioid issues would be much better served by donations to local programs and resources.

For a while now, the "opioid crisis" has actually been a fentanyl crisis, especially in terms of what's causing overdoses and deaths. Nonetheless, a lot of people—including 71 percent of those surveyed by NPR—think the government should do more to restrict access to prescription opioids. You know, the one sure way to send more people to dangerous black-market drugs.

Meanwhile, the government is fighting a two-pronged but all-carceral battle against opioids, seeking to prosecute pharmaceutical companies for creating addicts that other arms of law enforcement will arrest and prosecute.

America's county jails have turned "into their area's largest drug treatment centers," NPR says in a separate article.

It's the drug war that's not working. It's the lack of options for safe drug use and detox that aren't working. Lining law enforcement budgets with drug company cash won't change that.

ELECTION 2020

Joe Biden is in. Read Reason's Christian Britschi for more information. I am preoccupied with the seemingly random (dare I say Trump-like?) punctuation in his announcement:

Biden/Twitter
(Biden/Twitter)

https://twitter.com/LoganDobson/status/1121363566592974849

In conclusion: how can you trust a man to run the free world if he can't put the same number of spaces on either side of his dashes? #Joe2020

— Elizabeth Nolan Brown (@ENBrown) April 25, 2019

For his part, President Donald Trump has welcomed the man he calls "Sleepy Joe" to the presidential race. "I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign," Trump tweeted Thursday morning. "It will be nasty - you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!"

Biden takes a lot of flak for being a boring choice, but "right now most Dem voters, especially black voters, see him as the reliable brand who can win," suggests Dave Weigel on Twitter. "So does the guy who'd be America's oldest president get to Iowa without voters second-guessing that?"

FREE MINDS

Understanding data isn't racist. Kate Andrews of London's Institute of Economic Affairs pushes back on the idea that pushing back on bad gender-wage gap statistics makes her part of the "alt-right":

This week in a @guardian column, Zoe Williams accused me of being too nice, and also of perpetuating alt-right narratives around the #genderpaygap.

My response to her vast range of opinions in today's Guardian letters' page: https://t.co/L3cWuj7244 (1/2) pic.twitter.com/APujXpakdX

— Kate Andrews (@KateAndrs) April 25, 2019

As a classical liberal there is nothing I hate more than the authoritarian, anti-immigrant, racist ideology promoted by the alt-right.

To suggest anyone who engages with or challenges statistics is part of that horrible group is to shut down all possibility of civil debate. 2/2

What we need now finally is a true war hawk and drug warrior with hair plugs. We haven’t had enough of that lately.

Seeing ENB complain about editing issues is pretty funny in a sad sort of way. Based on the quality of text presented here, I’ve assumed the writers, excuse me, editors, type with their feet.

The new web site was obviously designed, built, and tested by those who couldn’t make editor. I’m a software professional; I would refuse to hire anyone who had this site in their portfolio. It’s execrable.

"More than 70 percent of Americans think pharmaceutical companies should cover the costs associated with opioid addiction and overdoses, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll. And 57 percent say these companies should be forced to pay in some unspecified and undirected way as punishment."

It's heartening to see that as much as 30% of the American people are still committed to fairness and rationality despite biased polling questions.

Now, let's see how many Americans think the oil companies should give Americans free electric sports cars.

    1. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

If we cannot punish the pharmaceutical companies for feeding our addictions then they would then be our fault and responsibility, and that cannot be right.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

No politician, not even libertarian politicians like Rand Paul or Ron Paul, will ever point to the people who are really responsible for our problems.

If a politician ever won after campaigning on the idea that the real solution to our problems is average Americans taking responsibility for their own lives, we'd already be in Libertopia.

        1. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

Which means we are fighting a long defeat.

          1. Cyto   6 years ago

If you can call it fighting.

Looks more like just laying there getting stomped in the face and complaining about who is wearing the boot.

          2. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

The solution probably isn't political. We need to change people's values. It's a moral crusade, but it's moral in terms of things like a work ethic.

There isn't a political solution to people who refuse to take responsibility for their own lives like there isn't a political solution to racism. There's no getting around persuasion.

Jesus started with an aversion to politics, no mass media, and 12 guys--one of whom was a traitor. No reason we can't be as successful as he was in disseminating his ideas and getting people to believe in them.

    Plagiarism!

  13. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

"I am preoccupied with the seemingly random (dare I say Trump-like?) punctuation in his announcement:"

Biden will likely appeal to the white, blue collar workers in the rust belt who put Trump in the White House in 2016. He'll likely have the endorsement of their unions, as well. Biden is the Democrats last, best chance at convincing white, blue collar America that the Democratic Party doesn't really hate them--which is why the social justice warriors who run the Democratic Party will all come out against Biden. After all, what's the point of being a social justice warrior if you can't hate the white, blue collar, middle class? Middle America should be hated. That's what being a Democrat is all about.

    1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   6 years ago

I think Biden could have achieved that in 2016, but I'm not so sure in 2020. Trump has delivered on improving the economy in those areas, while Biden could easily be portrayed as a reversion to the Obama years where things went to shit. And Biden has already demonstrated a willingness to cave to the social justice mobs - look at his retraction on Mike Pence being a decent guy or his pathetic, groveling apology for being a creepster.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

He's their last, best chance. I'm not sure he can do it either or that the other SJW Democrats will let him.

Still, the same demographic from the same areas (white, blue collar, middle class, rust belt) broke for Reagan in '80 and '84 for the same reason Trump Democrats did in 2016--only to return to the fold in 1992 and thereafter.

If Biden wins the nomination, he could be the reason the Midwest goes blue again, like Clinton did 1992. I'm not sure he can win the nomination. The nomination is about getting the support of radicals in closed primary states and + the super delegates and donors who are likewise radical. If Biden steadily get 30% of the polls, that means 70% of Democrats are voting for a radical. In closed primary states, that might not cut it--after the field has slimmed down ahead of Super Tuesday.

        1. Cyto   6 years ago

There's another demographic issue - people fleeing California and New York are populating these areas.

States like Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, etc. don't have to import too many people to flip to (D). Pennsylvania was probably a fluke, and it has to have gotten more (D) over the last 4 years.

          1. Titanian   6 years ago

Meh. We've been hearing that about those states for 20 years.

      2. John   6 years ago

The other problem for Biden is that he is by far the biggest phony in a political landscape full of them. The country is sick to death of irony and cynicism and craves honest beliefs. That is half the reason Sanders does so well. He may be a crazy, hateful bastard, but he does actually mean what he says. Biden doens't mean a word of what he says and it is obvious.

        1. jcw   6 years ago

So the american people like people who say what they mean? Is that right? Are you sure?

          1. John   6 years ago

Yes. They do. They crave authenticity. That is why Trump won and that is why Sanders does so well.

            1. jcw   6 years ago

Hah, whatever you say. What a troll.

              1. John   6 years ago

You are an idiot. Seriously, stop steeling other people's air.

      3. Fats of Fury   6 years ago

He apologized to Anita Hill too. She declined the apology. But she let him sniff her hair. The pubic one on the coke can.

    2. TripK   6 years ago

Yeah, Biden sure is great at appealing to white, blue collar, middle class workers when he gives speeches blaming "white man's culture" for sexual assaults. The one true way to earn white middle class votes is to associate everything they stand for with the sexual assault of women.

Smh. If you think Biden is Democrat's best chance in this field, you're mistaken. Sanders is the only real threat to Trump in 2020. MAYBE Buttigeig.

      1. Azathoth!!   6 years ago

    1. TripK   6 years ago

I don't get this logic. I think that Midwestern, white, blue collar workers are going to associate Biden as Obama 2.0. I also think Biden giving speeches associating sexual assault with "white man's culture" has already killed his chances to win a general election contest. If Biden wins the primary, it will reduce Democrat turn out among Bernie supporters.

      1. Zeb   6 years ago

I also think Biden giving speeches associating sexual assault with “white man’s culture”
I think you may be right about the Obama association being a problem for Biden, but I think the sexual assault stuff is just noise at this point to most people.

        1. TripK   6 years ago

Its not Biden's alleged sexual assaults that I think will be an issue. It's his blaming "white man's culture" that will get him in trouble.

He's essentially shifting blame for his individual improprieties onto all white men. I think I will stand with a lot of Midwesterners in saying "FUCK YOU" to Joe Biden for this.

Here's a list of Democratic leading Democrat candidates that Axios lists as either supporters of or co-sponsors of the Green New Deal, according to their public statements:

    Cory Booker
    Kristin Gillibrand
    Kamala Harris
    Beto O'Rourke
    Bernie Sanders
    Elizabeth Warren

    https://www.axios.com/2020-presidential-candidates-green-new-deal-22faff60-3fee-45f3-8636-09e437c82431.html

Bill Weld says it's too expensive, so he favors simply rejoining the Paris Accords.

Trump called the Green New Deal a, "roadmap to destroy the American economy".

    So far, Trump wins.

My only question is whether Biden supports or opposes the Green New Deal, with an eye to whether he would veto the legislation if it came across his desk as president. Otherwise, there isn't a single Democrat that matters--if they fail the Green New Deal test. That's all there is to it for me.

Full credit to the 'Canes. Justin Williams, next to Claude Lemieux, is the greatest Game 7 player in NHL history. WTF? Dude seems to be in on the biggest goals.

The Green New Deal is politically problematic for Democrats running for president. It's good branding, invoking FDR and the environment, but the proposals associated with it are variously authoritarian, economical suicide, or actually impossible.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

If the Drug War has taught me anything, it's that there's no policy so authoritarian, so futile, so expensive, and so destructive that the government won't implement and support it for 40 years.

The only question is whether the American people will vote for it initially and how far the Democrats are willing to go to enforce it after theoretical sacrifices turn into price signals and the American people rebel.

        1. Cyto   6 years ago

Actually, all of that has been debunked. Long debunked, I think is the turn of phrase.

I actually heard a pundit excoriating someone for saying that AOC wanted to eliminate airliners. Totally fabricated, they say. This, despite my hearing it in her own voice and reading it on her own website.

It is debunked. This is known.

      2. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

I like it when they invoke FDR. I get to remind them that he locked up more citizens due to their ancestry than Trump could ever do, and without any due process by EO.

"Bill Weld says it’s too expensive, so he favors simply rejoining the Paris Accords."

Do you mean the treaty that was never submitted to the Senate for ratification? Not that I need another reason to oppose Weld.

More than 70 percent of Americans think pharmaceutical companies should cover the costs associated with opioid addiction and overdoses,

Well I certainly don’t want to be stuck with the bill.

  29. $park¥ is the Worst   6 years ago

It's the lack of options for safe drug use and detox that aren't working.

Knock it off, the government shouldn’t be doing that either.

Obama has nothing to worry about. This country will never go into the business of throwing former Presidents in jail. The people who work for Obama, however, have a lot to be worried about.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   6 years ago

Which really makes me wonder why and who in the world would take a fall for the Obamas? Or the Clintons for that matter?

""This country will never go into the business of throwing former Presidents in jail."'

The impeach Trump and then throw him in jail crowd disagrees.

However, I don't think they are going to get their way.

          1. Cyto   6 years ago

Yeah, there's reams of paper filled with opinion pieces about how Trump is going to be indicted by state prosecutors in NY and sent to jail, either now or after he leaves office.

            1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

There are a little more than opinion pieces involved. NY is taking action. How far it will go, I don't know. But I don't think it will play out as they expect.

            2. John   6 years ago

It will never happen. And the reason for that is that once you go down that road, you can do the same thing to Democratic Presidents.

It is all bluff and bullshit.

              1. Cyto   6 years ago

We went down the road of completely politically motivated prosecutions by local prosecutors with the Majority Leader of the Senate. POTUS is another level, but they've proven to be immune to "what goes around comes around" logic.

              2. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

Investigations are proceeding, it's not a bluff.

Whether or not it leads to anything is a different story.

                1. TripK   6 years ago

Investigations are not indictments. It could very well still be a bluff.

Typical pay of oil refinery workers nears $200,000 a year.

Remember, if it were up to the Democrats, none of those jobs would exist. Every time they talk about the "evil oil companies" they are saying they want all of these people to lose their jobs.

  37. John   6 years ago

    http://spectator.us/joe-biden-obama-without-hope/

Biden’s defects are more obvious than any rationale for his candidacy. His 1988 campaign self-destructed over revelations of plagiarism. His record as a senator is nothing progressives can celebrate — he let them down in the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill hearings, sponsored the hardline 1994 Crime Bill, and voted for the Iraq War. Biden is meant to be charming, but he never succeeded in charming national voters in 1988 or 2008, and the charm he’s exhibited with any woman he’s been able to lay hands on is more than a little unseemly in the post-Weinstein era. The usual retort of Biden’s defenders, ‘But Trump said grab ’em by the pussy!’, misses the point completely: do you want a candidate who draws the sharpest possible contrast with Trump, or do you want one who has to spend time apologizing for the kind of thing that Trump gets away with? Biden’s line will have to be, ‘I’m guilty, but not as guilty…’ and Trump’s will be, ‘I’m not the one with a guilty conscience.’ Trump will, of course, have a field day playing with things Biden has said and supported where crime is concerned, too.

  39. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

    From NPRs story.

Support is even higher — more than 70% — for making drug companies pay the cost of addiction treatment services and cover the cost of the drug naloxone, used to revive people who've overdosed.

Looking at the study, they asked the question:

Pharmaceutical companies producing opioids should be held responsible for making opioid abuse worse

    The breakout is as thus:

    28%: Strongly agree
    29%: Somewhat agree
    19%: Somewhat disagree.
    10%: Strongly disagree
    15%: Don't know

I think NPR is pushing a few too many chips to the center of the table on this conclusion.

28% strongly agree that the pharmaceutical companies should be "held responsible". The question doesn't ask anything about "paying the cost". Paying the cost is merely something one might infer from what "held responsible" means.

29% "somewhat agree" meaning that their threshold for "held responsible" is lower than the 28% who strongly agree. Again, no clear definition on what "held responsible" means.

      National Progressive Radio

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

I haven't read the whole article word-for-word, but based on a quick scan and view of the study itself, I don't see how they pulled "over 70%" want the drug companies to "pay for the costs of [specific items]"

Maybe there was another question not shown in the graphic. These seems to be pushing the narrative though.

        1. Ray McKigney   6 years ago

"I will have a woman running mate," says senator and 2020 presidential candidate Cory Booker yesterday. "To me it's really clear that we do that."

So he promises to be full on sexist in his hiring practices?
And that is a good thing?
And has he explained exactly how is is going to be sure the woman is a woman? There is a real question for the 'debates'.
Slightly off topic, but I use the debate segue; will anyone ask the Democratic candidates if they are willing to accept the results of the election?

Well the mainstream media has been pushing the story that producers should be punished for making opioids so it's no surprise that people just throw back what they've been seeing and hearing. It's called propaganda and in the U.S. as in most countries it's very effective.
