Reed College Trains RAs to Recognize Covert White Supremacy. Examples: 'Colorblindness' and 'Assuming Good Intentions Are Enough.'
"It's provocative, and that was the intention."

Students who wish to become housing assistants at Reed College must undergo training to identify overt and covert white supremacy. A handout used in the January seminar lists examples of both: Overt white supremacy concerns obviously racist things such as racial slurs, hate crimes, and using the n-word, whereas covert white supremacy consists of a much broader and more baffling spectrum of behaviors, including "assuming that good intentions are enough," engaging in "cultural appropriation," expecting people of color "to teach white people," being a "self-appointed white ally," and of course, use of the phrase "Make America Great Again."
It's this last inclusion that drew the attention of The College Fix. But whether or not MAGA should be considered always and automatically an example of racism, there are enough questionable inclusions to make a reasonable person wonder about this list.
As it turns out, the list was not created by Reed College. A staffer at the college's Office for Inclusive Community found it on the internet and printed it off.
"It's provocative, and that was the intention, to present the RAs with something provocative and spur a conversation about the difference between implicit bias versus explicit bias," Kevin Myers, a spokesperson for Reed College, told The College Fix.
Note that this conversation did not take place inside a classroom—it took place in a training seminar for student resident advisors and housing staff. This is concerning; as part of a course's curriculum, one might reasonably expect this information to be presented by an academic expert on white supremacy, and the subsequent discussion to contain some nuance and room for disagreement. The Office for Inclusive Community, on the other hand, is an activist bureaucracy. What free speech assurances are there for students entering an administrative training program?
When I talk about campus free speech issues in the context of my forthcoming book, Panic Attack: Young Radicals in the Age of Trump (pre-order here), I'm often asked whether I think the faculty are indoctrinating the students. People are usually surprised to learn that the greater dangers to intellectual diversity and freedom of expression may be coming from the administration, and this Reed College seminar is an excellent example of why that's the case.

Reed at one time was the number one per capita producer of PHDs in the country. I assume that is still the case. So these little fascists will be moving on to be in positions of authority at other colleges. The future of higher education seems even more dismal than the present.
At this point, the only option is to cut off any government funding for the whole higher education enterprise and let the inevitable industry shakeout take place. The industry needs a right-sizing and it needs to become more customer-focused.
Yes. Do that and take away their tax empt status or at least for the really rich private ones. It is totaly absurd and injust that Harvard and Yale can effectively be hedge funds worth $30 billion dollars each last I looked that happen to run a college on the side and escape taxation.
Get rid of the subsidies and tax the living hell out of their endowments to clean up the student loan mess.

Wow. Lori Laughlin. America's girl next door. Unbelievable.
Her and Uncle Jessie must not have raised geniuses...
Based on one article I read, the cheating on the SAT raised her score 400 points ... to 1410. So her original score was 1010, pretty much in the "I take off my shoes to count to 20" range.
We desperately need a return to McCarthyism.
We already arrived years ago.
Are you now, or have you ever been a white supremacist?
In other o
In other words spy on white students because they are all racist and alternative political views are no longer allowed
"Whitey is the Devil!"
Here's how it works.
MAGA = Mueller Ain't Going Away = not racist
MAGA = Make America Great Again = obviously racist
This shouldn't be controversial for us Koch / Reason libertarians. Drumpf literally ran on opposing our open borders agenda. Only a racist would do that.
You know there was another guy who liked to define foreigners as a different race
including "assuming that good intentions are enough," engaging in "cultural appropriation," expecting people of color "to teach white people,"
They want only white professors teaching white people?
It's not about classroom instruction, it's about the whole "after-school special featuring a minority character" trope. Simply put, your fellow students (who happen to be minorities) aren't there to teach you to be not-racist. If they choose to help, that's a grace, but it's not a fair or reasonable expectation.
Oh, that's a win-win. They don't want to instruct me on how not to be a racist, and I don't want them to either.
In college I taught a black kid how to code. Apparently it would not have been ok the other way around.
Twitter will ban you if they find out you helped a black kid #LearnToCode.
I agree.
I was raised when the teaching was colorblindness. MLK.
It is hard to be colorblind now, since everyone wants to throw race in your face. I just dont give a fuck now. Life is sad for you because you're brown, trans, whatever? I dont care. Fuck off.
It's there as an immunizing strategy if Whitey dares question The Narrative.
"Do your homework." "I'm not here to educate you."
It provides them a justification for not putting their claims on the table and opening them up to criticism. Any suggestion that they should is now "white supremacy".
The idea, as I understand it, is that it is exhausting to people of color to have to explain the same thing to different white people who believe that it is somehow their right to come to college, express their own opinions, and learn from the opinions of others.
So for a white person to say something like "I grew up in a trailer without running water raised by my father who stretched out his disability checks by occasional light drug dealing - how am I more privileged than a person of color who was raised by their parents, a physician and a college professor?" and then expect to learn from other people's opinions is oppressive. That white person should make the effort to educate themselves about why they are wrong, instead of expecting people of color to educate them.
The ideas either that (a) white people's opinions are of any value to the discussion OR (b) that people can learn from one another by sharing their ideas are both white supremacy, somehow.
That is in fact the idea. It's a neat mental judo that allows taking away Victim Status from a wrongthinker because they are the wrong race.
At a show I was accosted by 3 antifa activists who continually asked me if I was a Nazi. I politely said I am not the first few times, and then told them they were bothering me and should kindly piss off. It was very clear they intended to bravely fight the fascists (me) three on one. Fortunately, other crowd members backed me up and the activists bravely turned their tails and fled.
Afterwards I put something on Social Media (TM) about trying to intimidate people is uncool and not the best way to sway you to their side, and a former friend jumped down my throat about "OMG maybe you are a nazi how can you not be congratulating them for their brave advocacy and you need to watch documentaries to better understand the struggles of people of color....I'll be watching you." I blocked her.
Did they have their own minstrels like Sir Robin?
"That white person should make the effort to educate themselves about why they are wrong"
Feel White Guilt NOW!
"OR (b) that people can learn from one another by sharing their ideas are both white supremacy, somehow."
i.e.,
"Truth is a social construct of the white supremacist cisheteropatriarchy used to oppress marginalized peoples"
Once you go down the road of polylogism, all that's left is submission or war. We can talk, we can submit, or we can fight.
"People [who live under rocks] are usually surprised to learn that the greater dangers to intellectual diversity and freedom of expression may be coming from the administration,
FTFY
"People [who live under rocks] ..."
I don't think that's accurate. Many people assume what was true when they went to college 15+ years ago is still true. They don't realize that Left wing-ism has metastasized from the faculty to the administration.
Those people have not been paying attention.

Based on these guidelines, every white person is a white supremacist by definition. I wonder, would it apply if a Martian exhibited these characteristics towards a Neptunian...or is it directed only at "white" people? Have they made any effort to define a "white" person? If Elizabeth Warren is excused for her 1/1000 Native American heritage, then who among us is really "white" or "brown" or "black" or Martian or any other Crayola Crayon color?
then who among us is really "white" or "brown" or "black" or Martian or any other Crayola Crayon color?
Dude, I am white as the snow in the North. According to Ancestry.com:
41% England & Wales
26% Ireland & Scotland
18% Germanic Europe
4% Swedish
3% Eastern Europe & Russia
2% Norway
Technically, that is only 91% if all the numbers were rounded up, so there is a chance of some non-white blood, but certainly not in the last 5-6 generations. I suppose I could claim an ancestor fooled around with the Moorish guy that Morgan Friedman played in Robin Hood.
Milton Friedman's brother from another mother.
None of those groups have been historically oppressed except by other groups on the list unless you want to go all the way back to the Romans. Even the Irish slander campaigns get no sympathy at all.
I did have an ancestor who fought for the Union, but died of dysentery during the campaign. Death by explosive diarrhea tends to override the narrative of hero who died freeing slaves.
I guess I just have to face the fact that although I haven't found an ancestor who wasn't born in the United States going back 200 years, I am still just a child of invaders who ravaged the peace and the environment of the American continent. What could I ever contribute to a discussion about diversity?
And here I though dying of dysentery only happened in computer games
I wonder, would it apply if a Martian exhibited these characteristics towards a Neptunian...or is it directed only at "white" people?
If you only knew how the Neptunian were oppressed by the Martians. My God, you're racist.
I'm 4% Neanderthal.
Muh people!
I want reparations for the #NeanderthalGenocide.
"Don't blame me I never owned slaves"!
None of the people blaming you ever were slaves, so it evens out
In this context, they aren't students... they are employees. And when have employees ever had "free speech assurances" in work training?
True enough, they're employees whose training material happens to include dumb stuff. Which they might inflict on the students in their halls. But it's not a violation of employee rights as such.
Actually, they are both. So you're wrong.
Sad to say, I graduated from Reed.
I will no longer give them any money.
Just be sure to pen a letter to tell them why.
I just did.

Oh good, the outrage of the day.
Even Robby is infected by the anti-racist rubbish. To wit, one is not a white-supremacist because one employs racial slurs or, horrors of horrors, actually utters the naughty word, nagger.
People seem to be failing to make the distinction between being a bit prejudiced or being a dick and actual racism or white-supremacism.
Failing to make the distinction, or intentionally conflating?
Probably some of each.
"I don't wanna hear about racism against Whites because it makes me uneasy about *my* racism against whites"

TV actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among dozens of people charged with paying bribes to get their kids into top universities in a widespread college admissions scam, according to reports Tuesday.
Hahaha. The Ivy League of corruption!
Just for a SJW degree.
Yes, Lori's child was reported to have an SAT of 1010 before cheating. Just what kind of serious scholarship do think she is going to do with that? She got in, but is not too likely to be taking Differential Equations!
so the entirety of alumni programs?
How unfair that you got passed over, I'm sure.
Tony took out 250k in loans to pay for school so he can relate.
And ended up with all the skills and qualifications needed to deliver pizza's for Papa Johns?
The turd burglar has made an appearance.
That whole article is LOL, but these are the juicy parts:
The one with Huffman and Macy's kid appears to not be a bribe, although I don't know how that $15K would have even qualified as a charitable contribution. She'll probably get off light, considering she decided to not pursue the same path with her youngest kid. Loughlin, on the other hand, appears to be federally fucked.
Phil Spector sits in a prison cell, while these monsters walk free among us.
This is why these Lefties are fine with letting hordes of illegals flood our colleges with limited seating.
They already had a plan to get their less than qualified white kids into school.
I don't know how that $15K would have even qualified as a charitable contribution.
Most public and private universities are 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations because they are "organized and operated exclusively for....educational purposes"
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/501
But the money did not go to the university.
The Apparatchiks are a self selecting and increasingly hereditary ruling class.
The last time I hung out at a college dorm I couldn't shake the vibe that I was basically in Bible camp for intersectionalism. We played the new edition of Cards Against Humanity which had all the nifty buzzwords like white privilege to help you get your noggin joggin' on what it's most applicable to. Unfortunately there wasn't much fun to be had due to the muffled atmosphere of everyone walking on eggshells.
Been an atheist all my life but that South Park episode where the churchgoers crack jokes about Catholic priests made church actually sound fun. Why can't college be like that?
No society is free if one cannot freely harpoon Hebrews or belittle Bantus.
Universities are the monasteries of the Social Justice Theocracy.
Seminaries
Seminaries
I was an RA. And pretty naive at the time. I remember they let us all smell some weed so we could recognize it. At that moment I realized what that smell was every year at my dad's family Christmas.
The only thing that came of my time as an RA was that I got a bunch of free condoms. They were supposed to be passed out to my residents as needed. As if.
""I remember they let us all smell some weed so we could recognize it. At that moment I realized what that smell was every year at my dad's family Christmas.""
That's funny.
So, you are a white supremacist. I knew it.
I remember they let us all smell some weed so we could recognize it.
I remember having the same experience when I was in the Navy. When I made Petty Officer 1st Class I was required to attend a "controlled burn". The Chief Master-At-Arms rolled up a doobie (with a lot of smirking from us that he should be so skilled at it), put it in a "power hitter", and blew it in our faces. In my case, I recognized the smell from attending concerts.
A friend of mine did RA at a private school for 2.5 years, including summer duty one year, mainly because he was from a low-income family, and doing so saved him a shit-ton of money on room and board, on top of the stipend. When he became a Senior RA in our junior year, he even got his own suite with a free cable hookup and a kitchenette, which made for a convenient crash pad after weekend parties.
The job stressed him out to no end, though, so he ended up resigning halfway through senior year and decided to do the one-hour commute from his parents' house every day.
"because he was from a low-income family, and doing so saved him a shit-ton of money on room and board
That's also why Tony did it, but he still had to take out 250k in student loans.
Make no mistake, my friend took out a shit-ton in student loans even with the RA job, although to his credit he only took out the bare minimum needed to meet his tuition and book costs after Pell grants. Didn't really have a choice, since tuition at that time for his school was about $15K a year (it's more than double that, now, even though the inflation-adjusted cost of his tuition is actually only $25K a year).
I think the poor bastard is still paying those loans off, and we've been done with undergrad for over 2 decades now.
The god's honest truth is that I got a full ride and then some, and with no bills plus mom's credit card for when I traveled, I was able to live a pretty good life on my own, and that's when I learned much about the finer things and manners like a good aristocrat. Something you apparently never had the opportunity for, sadly for everyone here.
Not as classy as Robespierre, but you're doubling down on the same things I guess.
I did it exclusively because it got you a double room for yourself at no extra cost. Before that I was paired with a sports medicine major as a roommate (we had a LOT in common, let me tell you), and then a single room the size of a walk-in closet. I was not a good RA, but the big room was quite nice.
My buddy was a good RA, but that was part of the problem--he gave too much of a damn and got so wrapped up in taking care of the dorm residents, on top of maintaining his grades (he was in a nursing program) that it was affecting his health. If I recall correctly, his last term as RA there were two or three suicide attempts and a sexual assault incident in his dorm, and that was the final straw.
I should mention that these all happened in the span of a month.
Yeah see, no thanks on that stuff. I did witness a potential rape through my peep hole, but what was I gonna do? I was shitfaced myself. Was I gonna confront the other shitfaced people trying to coax the girl into their room.
Luckily I was in an area of the dorm designated as the quiet space for the intellectually engaged. Not much else happened there.
covert white supremacy consists of a much broader and more baffling spectrum of behaviors, including ... engaging in "cultural appropriation"
So, when a descendant of black slaves dresses in "Western" garb, xi is a covert white supremacist and hence *doubly* guilty of cultural appropriation?
Am I doing this right?
No. You have to be retarded to understand.
"It's only cultural appropriation when Whitey does it"
If I'm blasting the song Fuck The Police and someone asks me who that is, I'm not allowed to say?
Literally every single thing about that sentence makes you a White Supremacist.
literally every single thing *anyone* says. get on the trolley.
If they don't know who it is, they don't deserve your time spent enacting their labor for them.
"...one might reasonably expect this information to be presented by an academic expert on white supremacy,..."
Whoa! Melissa Click can't be everywhere.
No, she isn't every where. Instead she lives and works within about three miles from me.
Yay, go Zags.
But her muscle can!
From the article:
"Other forms of socially acceptable covert white supremacy, according to the pyramid, include celebrating Columbus Day, police murdering people of color, denial of white privilege, Confederate flags, mass incarceration, Eurocentric curriculums, racial profiling and colorblindness."
So much hilarity.
-colorblindness is white supremacy?
-Confederate flags are socially acceptable?
-Whose curriculum is Eurocentric? Reed's? That's hardly the RAs' fault, is it?
-etc.
People of color should stop culturally appropriating white people by forgoing all the things white people invented. They are doing it in Venezuela by giving up toilet paper and electricity I hear.
Indeed so.
And they will have better lives without all that White Cultural stuff like,
Air Conditioning
Automobiles,
Trains,
Planes,
Buses,
Microwaves,
Radio,
TV,
Computers,
Phones,
Antibiotics,
Vaccines,
Flush Toilets,
etc.
Yep, no more cultural appropriation indeed.
"denial of white privilege"
Denying your privilege is proof of it.
Kafkatrap.
"denial of white privilege"
Denying your privilege is proof of it.
Kafkatrap.
Why is covert white supremacy more problematic than other forms of covert racism?
Because of the dead drops, coded messages, and poison pens.
Other forms don't need to be covert.
Cuz Whitey is the Devil!
Duh.
White people, you aren't going to win. Might as well throw around every racial pejorative you can imagine. You are going to be call a racists no matter how far you bend over for the idiots. Might as well have fun with it.
Or look at the other side.
Clearly we have won, time and time again.
Why else are 'they' still coming after us?
This is true.
The atmosphere of "beat whitey, it's OK" cannot lead to a good place.
Most people, of any color, are not racist. When those in power (media, politicians, academia) gang up and single out a whole race of people for constant abuse, there is an obvious consequence and reaction. It will get ugly.
The Left sows the fear, hatred, and resentment of identity politics to divide and conquer us
That is the inevitable outcome, rather than end racism this will probably inflame it. Whites will push back, because when others are defining you by your tribe you will choose to side with your tribe for protection.
It is as if they want this outcome.
Who really is behind this?
How about we confiscate the endowment funds of all universities and use the proceeds to pay off all existing student. Then the change, is any, can go to reducing the federal debt.
Then stop government guarantee of student loans.
It would solve two problems, and also be funny as hell to watch.
I approve of this idea.
I LIKE IT!
"What free speech assurances are there for students entering an administrative training program?"
What free speech assurances are there for soldiers entering the military, or workers entering the corporate world? Why is the speech of students so much more worthy of our attention than others?
Because most of these schools claim to value and promote free speech among their students.
No, employers aren't legally required to allow completely free speech in their employees. That doesn't mean that restricting their speech isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"Because most of these schools claim to value and promote free speech among their students."
Maybe among their graduate students. They tend to treat the undergraduates like cattle. My idea that freedom of speech in the working world is much more important than in schools, where we typically spend 4 years, if a university, versus 20, 30 years or more in the working world.
Most employers aren't using federal tax dollars or hiding behind nonprofit status to indoctrinate students and employees into believing that half the people paying those taxes are white supremacists. Once an organization accepts federal funding or becomes a 501(c)(3), they are required, by law, to be nonpartisan.
Free speech in the military isn't curtailed per session. You are just restricted what you can or cannot say while in uniform or representing yourself as a member of the military, e.g. you can say that Democrats are weak on national security on Facebook, but you can't say "as A member of the Army (or as a soldier) I think Democrats are weak on national security". Further, this training is meant to teach RAs what to monitor for, therefore it is about monitoring the residents of the dorms speech. The residents are not employees.
You give up most of your rights to political speech while an active member of the military.
Aren't these rights inalienable, ie can't be given up? Or is there some other meaning to the phrase that requires a degree in law to understand?
Once upon a time I was taught to be colorblind, to judge people by the content of their character, but they words and actions, to treat everyone the same regardless of their ethnicity or race.
What happened? How did that morph into covert racism? What strange Bizarro World do we live in?
Judging people by the content of their character has a disparate effect on people of color.
The goal is to remake society so that it treats them the same. What you do as an individual doesn't matter. What matters even less are individual's mere thoughts on the subject. And if those thoughts happen to amount to only recognizing racism when it happens to white people, that's definitely not helping.
is that not required by the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment?
"The goal is to remake society so that it treats them the same."
Justice is for *after* the Glorious Revolution. Until then, we must be merciless against the White Devil!
Orwell knows Lefties:
We are different from all the oligarchies of the past, in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives.
They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just round the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal.
We are not like that. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?'
"What happened? "
There were always just enough racists in the country to stymie efforts to reconcile. White people have finally let slip their demographic predominance, or are about to. You must realize there will be consequences, pay back and retaliation.
Quillette did a great article in how education schools have facilitated this kind of thinking, especially when they began offering education administration degrees. It is well worth the read.
Seems like they should lose federal funding with such sexist and racist nonsense.
Spurring a conversation in RA training...bullshit detector is off the charts!
These provincial little maggots with their inside the cupboard world view. Well the good news is they have no mobility.
Shorter: Reed College indoctrinates RAs in hating Whites and the Right (as if they needed it) and punishing them for WrongThink.
I went to Reed in the 80s. It may look like a bunch of NW hippie stoners, but the fact was it was a major indoctrination center for the international apparatchik ruling class.
Fun anecdote of Reed - "scroungers". There were students who wouldn't buy the meal plan, but would instead stand near the line to bus your trays and ask you "you done with that" as you go by. Waste not, want not.

So when Tucker Carlson says something like ""Iraq is a crappy place filled with a bunch of, you know, semiliterate primitive monkeys?that's why it wasn't worth invading," does that mean Reed College will defend his right to speech by saying "It's provocative, and that was the intention, to present the audience with something provocative and spur a conversation?"
Or are all provocative statements equal, but some provocative statements more equal than others? (although, in fairness to Tucker Carlson, that may have been a dumb thing to say, but he wasn't using federal funds to do employee training when he said it).
