Devin Nunes, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Square Off Over Straw Bans, Socialism
Are straw bans a sign of the lurking red menace?

Plastic straws are back in the public eye, after two of America's more ridiculous representatives squared off about the little suckers and the potentially Orwellian consequences of banning them.
On Saturday, Rep. Devin Nunes (R–Calif.) tweeted about a recent dining experience in which a fearful waitress asked his family if they wanted straws with their drinks.
At restaurant tonight waitress asks if we want straws. Says she has to ask now in fear of "THE STRAW POLICE". Welcome to Socialism in California!
— Devin Nunes (@DevinNunes) March 10, 2019
Nunes' tweet references California's new straw-on-request law, passed in September 2018, and which went into effect in January 2019. The law requires servers to ask patrons at full-service restaurants if they want a straw before giving them one.
Calling straw bans socialism is hyperbolic—although they might be a good example of "late socialism"—but Nunes' server wasn't wrong that eating establishments have something to fear from this latest restriction on how they can serve their customers.
California's army of health inspectors are empowered to enforce this straw policy, making them Nunes' "straw police." Handing out unsolicited plastic straws will net a food service business a formal warning for the first two violations. A third violation could earn them a $25 fine.
The original version of California's straw-on-request policy would have allowed jail time for violating, although that was stripped out of the final bill. Local bans like San Francisco's are far more onerous, and come with fines as high as $500.
Here in Washington, D.C., which started enforcing a straw ban earlier this year, there is indeed a "straw cop" walking the pettiest beat in the country.
For Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.), Nunes' warnings of the perils of straw socialism weren't just over-the-top; they were fake news.
The best part about the GOP-Fox propaganda machine is that Republican Congressmen actually believe + consume it uncritically, get duped themselves, which lead them to make statements like this
(Another one thought I got paid for the KDTH Netflix doc too- I didn't get a dime!) https://t.co/NSMkUhoD2a
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) March 11, 2019
It's unclear if the Ocasio-Cortez's tweet was questioning the very existence of straw ban or just Nunes' attempt to tie it to socialism. The congresswoman herself, while silent on plastic straws, saw fit in a recent interview to bash plastic bags.
Regardless, her tweet suggests a rather dismissive attitude toward petty restrictions that most people rightly see as irksome government overreach, and that businesses and their employees have every right to be concerned about.

I'm not sure what straw-banning has to do with socialism, beyond the general idea that socialism regulates everything-- which it doesn't really. It just owns everything.
Real socialism probably wouldn't ban straws because the straw factory needs to remain functioning.
'Real Socialism' doesn't give a fuck about straws. Probably because people under 'Real Socialism' are too busy trying to find food to give many fucks about the environment. That said, there also wouldn't be any straws because you don't need to a straw to drink nothing.
Real socialism wouldn't have this problem because of shortages and the population would save those straws for 10 years until they could get a new one.

If they stood in a straw line would that make them straw men? Or would only apply if they said "What if...?"
Yeah, socialism is about government ownership of the means of production, the redistribution of wealth, and--in practice--prices set by something other than markets.
That's what socialism is, but that isn't what these people are talking about.
What they're talking about by "socialism" is using the coercive power of government to force people to make sacrifices for the greater good, but that isn't socialism. That's the definition of authoritarianism.
And here's Ken to mansplain to us that words don't mean whatever we say they mean. Why should anybody give a shit what a white supremacist like you says? I'll bet you're such a bigot that you think Western ideas of facts and logic and science and rational thought are superior to other ways of knowing, denying the lived experience of gays and women and POC and other marginalized groups as a basis for truth. It wouldn't surprise me to find a racist such as yourself actually believes that white males are not the source of all evil in the world. It would be sad that your kind is blind to and in denial of your privilege if it weren't for the fact that evil people like yourself deserve no pity. Now fuck off, you Nazi hatemonger. Go back to your rightwing extremist websites like The New Republic and Mother Jones and The Nation where they still believe this sort of nonsense about words having meanings.
OBLT moment?

Any "tragedy of the commons" is not a tragedy if it doesn't hurt *me*.
The left in the US is using "socialism" to mean their definition of doing "good" without the constraints of a "Bill of Rights." They think that their good intentions will automatically result in good. In short, they're clueless.
*democratic socialism
You can't forget that it's voluntarily voted on.
Yes, in "democratic socialism" those without can vote themselves a piece of those with. And since the former outnumber the latter, some of us would get screwed.
Don't get me wrong, I'm about as adamantly against socialism as anyone can be.
However, socialism has become the bogeyman of the right against any authoritarianism of the left. Thereby allowing authoritarianism on the right to be allowed as non-socialism. It seems that neither side wants to blame authoritarianism (which is what straw bans are) because both sides believe in some brand of authoritarianism.
See also, fascism as the bogeyman of the left against all authoritarianism on the right.
You keep up that left/right stuff and you'll be accused of being Hihn. Or some variation thereof.
tl;dr -- Left + Right = 2 * Authoritarianism
I think the sum is greater than the parts, but that's just me.
To be fair most of the authoritarian tendencies of the left are meant to further their bromance with collectivism, aka socialism. With the right it's nannyism standing alone more than any organized effort.
Authoritarianism can come in a variety of flavors both left and right, but if what they're talking about isn't the government setting prices, isn't about wealth distribution, and isn't about government controlling the means of production, then what what they're talking about is only socialist if you mean that socialism is when the government uses its force of coercion to make us to act in everyone's best interests. And that is the definition of authoritarianism.
They just like the sound of the word "socialism" better than they like the sound of the word "authoritarianism"--but authoritarianism is what they're advocating.
They're beyond authoritarian.
They're totalitarian.
The difference?
Totalitarians don't just forbid acts, they forbid thoughts also.
Authoritarianism can, theoretically, be rather hands off if it constrains itself to limited or narrow arenas.
Totalitarianism, by definition, must express dominance in all facets of life.
Authoritarianism seeks an obedient people.
Totalitarianism seeks a New People.
*no, this is not an endorsement or defense of authoritarianism - just acknowledgment that there is a difference of degree and intent, and that's an important distinction
All government is force. I'm always in favor of the least amount of force.
AOC's brain is just a series of hollow plastic straws.
Its control the means of production.
Means of Production: physical and non-financial inputs used in the production of economic value.
For Lefties, they want to gain political power by preventing straws from being manufactured.
And what is the purpose of the straw ban? Is it to keep plastic out of the oceans?
I find it unlikely that California is a major source of plastic in the Pacific, when cities like Manila, Jakarta, Bangkok, Shanghai, Tijuana, and Guatemala City are also on the ocean, have less developed trash disposal systems, etc.--and we haven't even started talking about cruise ships. God only knows what happens to the plastic waste they generate.
Again, progressivism is about forcing people to make sacrifices in service of what progressives see as the greater good--with teaching people to love selfless sacrifice being a greater good all in itself.
with teaching people to love obedience to arbitrary exercises of unchecked power masquerading as selfless sacrifice being a greater good all in itself

I'm going to start a business that extracts the unnecessary organs of progressives. Since progressives are not needed at all, the assumption is all viable organs should be harvested. Also, to keep overhead down, we will dispense with the use of anesthesia.
Why not just allow them to get the late-term abortions they want? It's the progs who want late term abortions anyways, and your tribe is obsessed with this being the most evil thing in the world, but you constantly rave about wanting to fill landfills with them, take their organs etc etc. Why not just let those black market back alley abortion clinics do it for you, saving you lots of work?
It would really streamline your operation.

"When it comes time to hang the capitalists, they will sell us the rope except will have to eat the rope, perhaps they'll sell us the straws and we can shoot there eyes out." -AOC, Doctor of Thinkology "Oh and Fox news."
If the revolution succeeds, AOC will be standing in front of a wall, wondering why she's about to be executed by the new socialist order.

"The reason the unemployment rate is to low is because people have two jobs." - AOC, super-genius. (with apologies to Wile E. Coyote)
AOC is nothing more that a life support system for a vagina,
She gets too much publicity for a first term state rep.
Her and my rep Ilhan Omar.
I agree. They are near irrelevant. But they serve as effective bogeys to fearmonger. Says more about how fearmongering works than it does about first-term reps or what they espouse.
Well, except they own Pelosi and won't let Democrats condemn bigotry....
She's gotten high publicity in everything she's ever done. Turns out she ran a dodgy publishing company a few years ago in a new york state funded incubator for young entrepreneurs. Her company never produced or published a single thing, yet she was featured on the website as the face of a go-getting young Latina business startup.
Basically, she's benefitted from attractive-privilege for a very long time.
To each his own, but I honestly cannot see how people find her attractive. And I'm not just saying that because I don't like her politics. I don't like Tulsi Gabbard either, but I'd put a baby in her for sure.
AOC's face just screams "swipe right."
A bag over her head and a little Russian action would be "aight".
Wood not, and I think you mean swipe left.

My understanding is that she has a college degree and, subsequent to that degree, she tended bar and, prior to running, was waiting tables. I've never worked food service in NY, but knowledge and experience elsewhere tells me that the process generally works; you wait tables until you can tend bar, you tend bar until you graduate and find a job. Also, not being highly skilled or hard labor positions, going the opposite direction constitutes walking down the socioeconomic escalator.
"...Her company never produced or published a single thing, yet she was featured on the website as the face of a go-getting young Latina business startup...."
Signalling; nothing more or less. She was a token Latina and anyone with principles would have objected. Not her.
Someone needs to call AOC's boyfriend and tell him to get his bitch under control.
Ummm....pretty sure he's the bitch.
Boom.
He's a soft-looking ginger who doesn't tell her shit without her permission.
I dig that net worth Oyster-Cult online ad that keeps popping up on my feed. Smokin hot.

"Regardless, her tweet suggests a rather dismissive attitude toward petty restrictions that most people rightly see as irksome government overreach, and that businesses and their employees have every right to be concerned about."
Like all proggies, all the time, she is more than willing to have her hired thugs enforce her merest whim. If you don't like it, you can go to jail.
What a wonderful person!
Well, she's the boss now. So the rest of us can just FOAD.
The old Soviet Union was an environmental disaster. When everyone owns something, no one is responsible for it. No one would clean up anything unless they were paid, threated or bribed, and difference between a bribe and a paycheck is that usually the bribe offerer demanded actual performance accountability. The socialist employers pretended to pay workers who pretended to work. By the fall of communism in Russia, the largest airliner/aerospace manufacturer had three times the employees of Boeing, but did about a third the production of indifferent quality.
The one bright spot, is that socialist science and engineering did encourage some odd-ball solutions to technical challenges that actually worked out. Actually, this is an old Russian characteristic pre-dating Marxism.
Screeching red menace.
Not 'lurking', not anymore.
Conspiracy theory?
"YouTuber Mr. Reagan explains that with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez aka AOC, the people of New York did not elect a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx. They actually elected an Indian guy from Texas, Saikat Chakrabarti, a white guy from Tennessee, Corbin Trent.
In 2016, AOC was working as a bartender in New York City. She'd never dreamed of running for Congress. It was her brother who entered her into a contest being held by a group called the Justice Democrats, headed by the above-named people. It was quite literally a casting call. Out of 10,000 entries, AOC won the role to play the Congresswoman from New York's 14th District. They make no secret of this."
Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is a Puppet: The Brains Behind AOC
Sounds plausible. It's hard to believe that she could count change, let alone get elected, without help.
Sounds entirely plausible. See my post above.
If you look at the 'properties' of the infamous GND FAQ pdf, his name appears in the 'Author' attribute. Although it's not a big surprise that a chief of staff would be writing/editing this, one does wonder if she had anything to do with its creation or review.
Good find. Thanks for sharing.
Read this on the website: "We recruited and helped Alexandria pull off one of the biggest upsets in American history. But the top of the Democratic Party is still disproportionately wealthier, whiter, and more male than the base."
They're saying that Democratic congresspeople are far too masculine?
If socialism simply means anything which moistens the panties of social-justice studies majors, then straw bans are certainly socialism, as is any feelgood policy sold to the public as checking the abuses of "neoliberalism" or out-of-control capitalism.
Well, screeching racism works for the left. It's about time the right came up with a new epiteth to throw about. Commie and Hippy are so cold war.
Environmentalism is what moistens the panties because it just so happens that a discredited philosophy that's responsible for 100,000,000 corpses just so happens to be the very thing that will save the planet from destruction in 11.7 years.
Some of my favorite restaurants made the switch to paper straws and they fall apart, sometimes even start to leak, completely destroying their utility as straws. I'm all for helping the sea turtles, but at the expense of having to sip my cocktails directly from the glass?! I think not.
You drink too slowly.
When you watch old movies with suave gentlemen having cocktails, have you once seen them use a straw?
Even James Bond doesn't use one, and he can't order a proper martini or properly hold a martini glass.

So, unable to say that AOC didn't know what the fuck she's talking about and had to explain it away for her?
Bravery, Reason.
Jesus, Big Straw really has Reason by the nuts, huh?
I got served a paper straw at a place recently. I found it equally useful as and more elegant than the plastic variety.
Well good for you fanny bandit.
Tony missing the point as always.
The point should be that straws are for children, and at any rate children should be taught how to drink like adults as early as possible.

This does not have much to do with socialism per se. It is, however, a rule brought into being by a nanny state moral panic originally based on a bad statistical analysis by a grade schooler.
Focusing on whether or not it is "socialism" is arguing about semantics. It is bad, full stop.
And you shouldn't. From each according to their abilities...
Noice!
Is poltical support not worth anything?
I guess you could say AoC made a strawman.
"At restaurant tonight waitress asks if we want straws. Says she has to ask now in fear of "THE STRAW POLICE". Welcome to Socialism in California!"

Wait - so now we are giving credence to the idea she can actually define socialism and make a nuanced argument about what it isn't?
Ugh, she's so banal. Let's be sure to let the Cortez / Omar / Talib Crazy Train continue to roll; perhaps a second Trump term will learn 'em.

Does AOC not know that plastic grocery bags actually have the smallest environmental footprint? You have to use a cotton tote bag literally thousands of times for it to be equal to the footprint of one plastic bag. Paper bags actually have a slightly larger footprint as well although those do biodegrade at least. I get it if you want to save marine life, plastic bags are the worst, but overall they are the least damaging to the planet as a whole. If you want to save the planet, experts recommend using recycled plastic/nylon/polypropylene reusable bags to put your groceries in.

Someone above mentioned that she is a delivery system for a vagina; the world doesn't need one more twat that comes with such a huge dose of stupid.

Twitter fights are the Lincoln Douglas debates of our time.
I LOLed. More like the Lincoln-Shields debate.
Littering is illegal. Dumping toxic waste into rivers is illegal. A "straw ban" is just a difference in degree. What matters is the degree to which any penalty is disproportionate to the offense in addition to whether the "ban" is actually necessary to address the alleged problem. I'm much more concerned with the banning of "hate speech". Of course, some absolutists will say a "straw ban" is the foot in the door. It's not. The principle of the government being able to regulate the availability of one product or another has been around for a very long time an is not going anywhere.
And your point is......
I tend to be allergic to conspiracy theories but every once in a while I get to wondering if a very quiet, completely under-the-radar coup was successfully staged some decades ago and all the "politics" since then has been a sham designed to fool the public into thinking they are still casting votes to express their preferences.
If this is actually the case, the problem is that the ruse has jumped the shark. Characters like AOC can't be real. People who think/talk like her used to provoke reactions in the general public like the ones provoked by Jehova Witnesses proselytizers or Repent-the-End-is-Near placard carriers. They didn't get elected congress much less quoted in the press.
Went to a restaurant last week and they gave us plastic straws without asking. Maybe i should report them
The problems of plastic are real. You can voluntarily eschew them, or you can create regulations that they be replaced with something other than plastic, but if something isn't done, you soon will not be able to order fish that DOESN'T come with a side of plastic, and there are going to be a lot less fish in the first place.
Google "plastic straws oceans".

OK, I can't tell if you're a serious or a bot or not. If you are; None. If you aren't you're giving OBL a good run for his money.
Who cares?
Most garbage in the oceans does not come from the USA.
I don't know about that. Even if we are only 5% of the world we consume a lot of energy and finished goods per capita. And if the plastic debris are coming from manufacturers producing goods for the USA, or handeling our waste streams, doesn't that count? Still doesn't justify a stupid straw ban. However, the plastic problem in the oceans is a real thing.
However, the plastic problem in the oceans is a real thing.
No, it's not. For a wide array of reasons the least of which being that the majority of human civilization doesn't and never has required sea water to be all that pure.
"However, the plastic problem in the oceans is a real thing."

Banning things that nanny thinks are bad for you is not a symptom of Socialism; it is a hallmark of Progressivism.
Now it's the clothes shedding synthetic microfibers in the wash.
First they took our straws. Next they are coming for our clothes.
Whatever "ism" may or may not be involved, there is no question that the AOC's, CA regulators, etc of today's social/political movements have ZERO concern for individual rights, though or opinions. The progressive left has anointed certain undebatable truths and everyone must follow the "group think" or they will be outed, rebuked or boycotted. They will determine how you dress, what you eat, where you walk, how you drive, what you can say and what you can believe. It's as if the deaths and oppression of re-education camps and gulags never happened. The AOC's and progressives do not understand civics, economics, basic business math, or basics of history.
Can't we just agree that this is government overreach? Hell, I live in California and it took a week for them to get this law straight for the drive-throughs for the fast food industry. Anyhow, Nunez was right to point this out, and I think he is a fucknut. That doesn't mean he is always wrong. And I do love the environment, but if you want to stop all that plastic washing into the ocean, this solution is just a band aid. To many of the new left politicians want a feel good parade, but without focusing on practical solutions with actual benefits, while weighing the costs.

STRAW MAN (A poem by John Baker)
Man, that surely sucks,
It's the real thing, don't you know,
From 'fore the banned the plastic straws,
Years and years ago.
Oh, someday they'll perfect the paper,
Straws that now collapse,
Before you're finished sucking,
And throw them in the trash.
They'll coat 'em with some kind of spray,
That lets them last and last,
But still be called a paper straw,
They'll really catch on fast.
And they'll get flushed with all the shit,
That's floated out to sea,
And banned just like the plastic ones,
They took from you and me.
But as for now, I'm hoarding straws,
Just in case, you see,
'Cause I like sucking through a straw,
Wild, and brave, and free!
So piss off, and let me be .....

Socialism is related to the straw ban because in socialism, the state must control the means of production. Suppose some capitalist running dog started making straws better and cheaper than State Straw Factory #473's bio-degradable straws. If people started buying (or bartering for, perhaps) the capitalist running dog's straws, they might eventually believe that other things might be made, or run, better than the State could. That way lies madness.
Seems to me it's more like green fascism rather than socialism.
If they really want straws to disappear, socialism would do it: nationalizing straw production would surely make them go away.
Interesting how much Reason has morphed over the past 10 years. It's at the point now where it's harsher on someone making a hyperbolic claim about petty regulation than it is on the socialist making fun of that person.
It is in a sad state nowadays...
Taxifornia is the ultimate Nanny State; so many laws are passed each year that citizens will soon carry a rules book and constantly reference before making the most mundane decisions. The straw ban does nothing to reduce pollution of the sea and/or land; the ocean trash is from Asian countries not the US. But try reasoning with Taxifornia legislators, good luck - it is nearly impossible. Whether a straw ban is socialist or not is hardly important but there is no arguing the Taxifornia is primarily a left leaning state dominated by progressive, socialist democrats and the majority of citizens have resigned themselves that nothing will change . . .
