Critiquing Israel Policy Worse Than White Nationalism, Says GOP Leader: Reason Roundup

New members of Congress clash with GOP leader over Israel. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is calling for Democrats to sanction two freshmen members for their sass on Israel. McCarthy told Democrats they must "take action" against Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, both elected last fall and the first two Muslim women in Congress. If Democrats don't do something, said McCarthy, "I think you'll see action from myself"—though it's not clear what he could actually do.

McCarthy is mad over (separate) comments Omar and Tlaib have made about Israel. He said their comments were more offensive than Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) sticking up for white nationalism.

Omar accused Republican policy on Israel of being driven by funding from lobbyist groups like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). As John Bresnahan explains at Politico, AIPAC "is a non-profit that doesn't donate directly to candidates. AIPAC, however, does relentlessly push a pro-Israeli message on Capitol Hill and inside the executive branch, and its members donate to pro-Israel lawmakers and candidates while seeking to defeat those it considers a threat to U.S.-Israeli relations."

In January, Tlaib came under fire for saying some members of Congress "forgot what country they represent" after they voted for a bill targeting boycotts of Israel. Tlaib was accused of dog whistling the old "two loyalties" accusation that was once frequently deployed about Jews and Israel (or Catholics and the Pope). She was roundly accused of anti-Semitism by many conservatives, including the bill's sponsor, Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio. In response, Tlaib tweeted "Sen. Rubio, it's clear my earlier tweet was critical of U.S. Senators like yourself, who are seeking to strip Americans of their Constitutional right to free speech."

Journalist Glenn Greenwald called it "obscene" to compare these comments from Tlaib and Omar with defenses of white nationalism. "In the US, we're allowed to criticize our own government: certainly foreign governments. The GOP House Leader's priorities are warped," Greenwald tweeted. He continued:

Sorry, but you're not going to turn the two first Muslim women to serve in the US Congress into overnight Jew-haters because of their criticisms of Israel. What's actually anti-Semitic is conflating the Government of Israel with Jews, so those of you doing that should stop.

Rep. Omar in turn retweeted this with the comment "It's all about the Benjamins baby" and a music-notes emoji—prompting more cries of bigotry. Alyssa Farah, Mike Pence's press secretary, called it "textbook antisemitism" and an "astonishing statement from a sitting member of Congress."

A lot of mentions of money and Israel tend to get shut down in this manner. Activist Imraan Siddiqi questioned why it's "perfectly fine to talk about paid trips, influence peddling and money in DC" when it comes from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or the United Arab Emirates. But Israel "is off limits?"

As with Democrats seeing white supremacy in every "OK" hand gesture and racist dog whistles everywhere, a lot of people on the right are determined to see coded anti-Semitism in any criticism of Israel or its U.S. supporters.

GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib over their criticisms of Israel. It's stunning how much time US political leaders spend defending a foreign nation even if it means attacking free speech rights of Americans https://t.co/It1fGm1b70

ELECTION 2020

Both Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) announced their 2020 presidential campaigns over the weekend. With each new Democratic Party contender—a group that also includes Sens. Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard—criticism of the candidates is often met with swift appeals to consider: Aren't they better than Trump on this regard? But even for those who think the two-party system should get their votes regardless, now surely isn't the time to gloss over candidate flaws and resort to reflexive whataboutism. Now is precisely the time to air as much as we can about who these candidates are and how they fare in the national spotlight.

With Klobuchar, whose alleged mistreatment of staff became an issue last week, "it's not clear that this news alone will sink Klobuchar. It's still early, and she wouldn't be the first intense boss to become president," writes David Byler yesterday in the The Washington Post. "But this kind of story, and the primary campaign as a whole, can be bruising. That's the entire point of the process—or at least, before the Trump era, it was supposed to be."

QUICK HITS

Klobuchar, an ardent Drug Warrior, also brought felony charges for quality-of-life offenses and child support nonpayment and helped lead a drive to make drunk driving a felony. Minnesota's prison population soared. https://t.co/Env4iZHjSV

Boiling Water Challenge: Burns Warning Over Viral Stunt

School districts demand more money yet refuse to teach kids basic science.

What does basic science have to do with knowing to not throw water into the wind?

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

NEWS FLASH: SparkY burned after boiling water throw into the air does not instantly freeze like Twitter said and 100F + water land on skin.

Governor Coonman is taking fresh heat for putting his foot in his mouth and calling slaves "indentured servants" on one of the talking-head shows.

      1. Rich   6 years ago

"Virginia needs someone that can heal," he told King. "There's no better person to do that than a doctor."

"Virginia needs someone that can soothe. There's no better person to do that than a massage therapist."

"Virginia needs someone that can release tension. There's no better person to do that than a hooker."

        ...

      2. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

The irony is that Northam mainly just got his history confused. Those first Africans were indeed slaves because they were on a Spanish slave ship that had been captured (their fate after arrival isn't known), but most, if not all, of Virginia's first black residents were in fact indentured servants and even bought their own lands after their term of service ended. To the extent that slavery became institutionalized, this didn't take place until the mid-late 1600s.

        1. damikesc   6 years ago

Something I missed but this is a good point:

Why the hell is Northem trying to make HIS racial issue a problem for ALL of Virginia?

"It's obvious from what happened this week that we still have a lot of work to do. There are still some very deep wounds in Virginia, and especially in the area of equity," he said. "There are ongoing inequities to access to things like education, health care, mortgages, capital, entre?pre?neur?ship. And so this has been a real, I think, an awakening for Virginia. It has really raised the level of awareness for racial issues in Virginia. And so we're ready to learn from our mistakes."

The word "we/our" is used 4 times. "I/me"? Not once.

What the fuck do you mean "WE", governor? You and the AG ONLY? I'm betting not, but the Left has spent a lot of time making THEIR faults the faults of America.

      3. Ecoli   6 years ago

Is that the Governor's name: Coonman? Really?

A quarter of all kindergartners in Washington aren't immunized. Now there's a measles crisis

All that work by doctors and scientists to get essentially get rid of a horrible disease in the USA and Lefties use their Party of Science logic to allow the virus to gain a foothold again.

    1. damikesc   6 years ago

It seems odd that conservatives' disdain for science that has little predictive value and is highly reliant on sketchy computer models of things we don't remotely grasp is evidence of being "anti-science", but denying easily proven scientific information by the Left is not.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   6 years ago

Anyone know if there is a study that shows antivaxxing is left or right? I feel like this is more a crosscutting concern for rich housewives than anything too political, but my inkling ain't a survey so I'd be curious to know.

        1. speedylee   6 years ago

My personal experience is that anti vax stupidity does not fall along party lines but I'd love to see a study as well.

        2. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

          short-url

On the topic of childhood vaccines, older adults (especially those ages 50 and older) are more likely than younger adults to see childhood vaccines such as the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine as safe and as something that should be required of all children.

I remember seeing something but cannot find it. Conservatives tend to be okay with the old basic vaccination regime and might want new vaccines spread out or not given. The MMR regime was found to be largely super safe and worth the risk because those diseases were horrible.

Young people and Lefties tend to avoid even the basic vaccines.

I noticed that some surveys don't address this difference between left-right.

          1. mad.casual   6 years ago

            ^This^

The various aspects of 'anti-vaxxing' combined with a lack of investigation/correlation with political alignment would make it complicated to disentangle (and upset some convenient political narratives). Conservatives who sat through getting their upper arm effectively mutilated to avoid polio would probably make their kids do it. But their also the sort of people who would skip out on the flu vaccine absent other confounding conditions. Not to mention that everybody left, right, and maybe even center can recognize that vaccinating just girls to prevent HPV is a pretty blatant and unethical sham.

            1. Ecoli   6 years ago

The upper arm mutilation was the vaccine against small pox, not polio.

Taking the the small pox vaccine, 15 jabs with a bifurcated needle, and then suffering for a month with a festering sore at the inoculation site is absolutely worth it. Small pox is a dreadful disease.

          2. SIV   6 years ago

I think avoiding proven vaccines for deadly, debilitating, disfiguring, dangerous diseases is crazy.

Skepticism of new, unproven vaccines for low-risk uncommon or mild diseases is understandable.

            1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Not sure how you can justify that claim when a majority of both young people and lefties are in fact vaccinated.

I was going to say the same. It feels like it should align with the over-parenting cult, which doesn't seem to align with any particular politics. I wouldn't be surprised if anti-vaxxers were primarily single issue voters that don't care about much else.

It tends to be hyper-religious types (I'm talking about the "anything produced by the world is sinful") or far-left radicals who think they're supporting Big Pharma.

What they have in common is that the most visible ones are women. Like the "my 2-year-old is transgender" crowd, it's driven by a lot of Munchausen-by-proxy, attention-seeking behaviors.

            1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Nothing more "pure" than dying from respiratory distress complications.

In 1980, 2.6 million people died of it, and in 1990, 545,000 died; by 2014, global vaccination programs had reduced the number of deaths from measles to 73,000

Use the brain that GOD gave you.

My impression (which could be totally wrong) is that the anti-vax thing is more a left thing than a right thing. But it certainly isn't a typical or predominant left-wing or right wing view.

I think more than anything it's a phenomenon among relatively wealthy helicopter parent types

        6. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

Anyone know if there is a study that shows antivaxxing is left or right? I feel like this is more a crosscutting concern for rich housewives than anything too political, but my inkling ain't a survey so I'd be curious to know.

It can run both ways. In Washington, antivaxxing is largely left, and most of it occurs in one hippie enclave.

    2. Mr. Flanders   6 years ago

Maybe leftism is a self-correcting disease that eventually succumbs to anti-vaxxing trends. They kill their young inadvertently this way. Unfortunately, this has a side effect of killing many other people too, since vaccinations depend on herd immunity.

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

        Lefties are pro-abortion, anti-vax, and pro-war.

It would almost seem like they want their young to die.

      2. 0x1000   6 years ago

They need a marketer. No one wants to be part of a herd, sheparded around at the point of a syringe. Call it 'community immunity' or something like that. Then the antivaxxers get ostracized.

      3. Zeb   6 years ago

I doubt it. Anti-vax people are a minority among the left and don't seem to be particularly politically motivated in their odd beliefs.

        1. Mr. Flanders   6 years ago

I'm just joking... but given some of the other comments I see here I can't blame you for thinking I was serious.

Krugman Sees Possible U.S. Recession With Little Fed Wiggle Room

It wasn't just immigration and foreign policy and the Supreme Court that motivated me to vote for Clinton in 2016. I knew she'd continue the amazing Obama economy. But Russia hacked the election and installed Drumpf, who has virtually destroyed the economy in just two years. Now things are so bad that even a low unemployment rate is a bad sign. What If There Were 42 Million at the Border?
Gallup asked the whole population of Latin America. There are 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Roughly 450 million adults live in the region. Gallup asked them, "Would you like to move to another country permanently if you could?"

    A whopping 27% said "yes."

So this means roughly 120 million would like to migrate somewhere.

The next question Gallup asked was, "Where would you like to move?"

Of those who want to leave their Latin American country permanently, 35% said they want to go to the United States.

The Gallup analytics estimate is that 42 million want to come to the U.S.

The Gallup analytics estimate is that 42 million want to come to the U.S.

That's great news. Reason and Cato studies prove over and over that immigration is a good thing. Logically, it follows that more immigration is even better than a small amount of immigration.

  23. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

"He said their comments were more offensive than Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) sticking up for white nationalism."

The story ENB linked to doesn't appear to say what ENB says it says.

"Republican leader in House says statements by the congresswomen are equal to ones by Steve King" . . . . Statements by freshmen Democrats Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota were equal to King's and "more so", McCarthy said."

    http://www.haaretz.com/world-n.....-1.6917751

The story goes on to say that McCarthy, "has recently taken action to isolate Steve King of Iowa". It appears that what McCarthy is saying is that he's taking the same steps with the people who have said bad things about Israel that he took against King for saying good things about "white supremacy".

Oh, and ENB should probably be careful about defending whatever it was these Democrats said. The story she linked to says, "Omar has in recent days apologized multiple times for that tweet." I mean, why would ENB defend a statement that the Democrat in question has herself apologized for?

My first guess is because of laziness and bias, but someone else who were lazy and biased might accuse her of sticking up for antisemitism. Two wrongs don't make a right, but that's more or less the same logic ENB is using against McCarthy.

    1. Libertymike   6 years ago

Your post ignores the pack of pachyderm in the parlor:

Even contemplating legislation that condemns and punishes freedom of association is abhorrent in a free society - even if that freedom of association is directed against a foreign nation. That the foreign nation is the Jewish state does not thereby alter the principle.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

Your point is what it is regardless of whether ENB misrepresented what's being said and what's happening. I guess she imagines we can just make shit up if and when doing so serves the greater good? I don't know. But you know noting about what I think of divestment of Israel by me pointing out that someone has the facts wrong . . . for whatever reason.

        1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

P.S. My initial take on divestment is that the people promoting it are doing so out of ignorance of the likely consequences. To the extent that China abides by international norms, it is not because we don't trade with them. Trade with the United States gives us more influence than we'd have otherwise. Pinochet held a referendum on his own rule and respected the results because of Chile's relationship with the U.S.--not because he didn't have one. When the Egyptian military made Mubarak step down, it wasn't because they had no relationship with the U.S. It was because they wanted to preserve it. The reason the South Koreans haven't retaliated against North Korean provocations is not because they haven't been provoked. It's because of our connection and our influence.

Regardless of whether you think the U.S. should have influence over foreign countries, the fact is that it does. Divestment people seem to imagine that terminating our trade with Israel will make Israel open to negotiations and bring in a new era of peaceful coexistence. If the U.S. withdrew all its support from Israel, the more likely outcome would be that Israel would drive every man, woman, and child from Gaza and into the sea. Anyone who thinks divestment will bring about better conditions for the Palestinians needs to defend that basic assumption. It looks to me like wishful thinking based on their own biases. If you want more influence, you initiate more trade. You don't terminate it.

          1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Ken, you have a good point about US influence around the World.

I am fine with the USA keeping the peace via influence. I do have a problem with giving millions/billions to Israel and then the Israeli military murder US sailors onboard the USS Liberty in 1967.

            1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

I don't suppose you can know anything about my position on Israel just by my initial critique of the divestment movement either.

I see Israel much like the way I saw Pinochet, Stalin in World War II, or the British and the French during World War II. My primary interests are those of the United States.

IF IF IF it's in the best interests of the United States to make an ally of Stalin, then that's what we should do. No, I'm not comparing Israel to the Soviet Union--I'm comparing the logic of an alliance.

The question isn't whether the subject of an alliance is pure and noble and good. The question is whether the alliance is in the best interests of the United States. My support for the alliance with Stalin, France, the U.K., New Zealand, South Africa, and Israel is contingent on the best interests of the U.S.

It's entirely possible to condemn South Africa's domestic polices and support selling them weapons to fight the Cubans in Angola. In fact, reality and good policy often require complicated positions like that.

              1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

I was just adding my 2 cents to your good comments, Ken.

I agree with you on most of your points and especially about allying with people like Stalin, etc. if it suits American interests.

My main beef with American foreign policy is getting too entangled in foreign affairs rather than just trying to influence nations toward peace and/or American interests.

I personally could care less if the USA never gave 1 penny to Israel and the Muslims slaughtered every last Israeli. Israelis would not go down without a fight this time. They should have done that with Hitler.

I've always found it funny how many anti-Israel sites use PHP and frameworks based on it.

          3. Libertymike   6 years ago

First and foremost, what matters more is the commitment of Americans, particularly those in the ruling classes such as GOP and Donkey lawmakers, are willing to make to First Principles, including freedom of association. That commitment, I submit, necessarily includes a refusal to entertain any legislation which seeks to undermine the right of any person, natural or otherwise, to trade as he or she sees fit.

Second, the right to engage in trade encompasses the right to not engage in such trade. Thus, the right of an individual or a business or a non-profit to refuse to do business with Israel should not be prohibited upon any basis, whether the justification be that doom and gloom will follow or that those who insist upon refusing to do business with Israel are ignorant or that to do so is anti-semetic and is harmful to the Jewish state.

The important issue is the outrageous legislation - not the flawed ratiocination of some of the BDS supporters.

            1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

"The important issue is the outrageous legislation - not the flawed ratiocination of some of the BDS supporters."

              They're both important.

Before China joined the WTO, we used to have regular arguments in Congress about whether to extend MFN trade status to China despite their crimes against humanity.

There are still horrific crimes against humanity perpetrated by the CCP, from millions of Muslims in reeducation camps to God awful reports over the weekend I read of organ harvesting perpetrated against prisoners of conscience on a massive scale.

The question isn't only whether trading with China makes those abuses more or less likely, it's also weather trade with China benefits the United States in other ways. I happen to believe that trade with China has been enormously beneficial to the American people and their standard of living, and if we'd sacrificed that opportunity in an attempt to help political prisoners--who might actually be better off because of our influence? That's a serious consideration not only for Chinese political prisoners but also for Americans and their standard of living.

Of course the principle of interfering with people's property rights and their right to choose with whom to exchange goods is also important, but so is our standard of living. And if sacrificing our standard of living is actually making us lose out on influence we'd have otherwise, then that's also an important consideration.

              1. Libertymike   6 years ago

You are essentially contending that using violence to forbid free trade should be on the table. That is indeed what you would appear to support by framing the issue as you do. Rather Trumpian, wouldn't you say?

A's exercise of his freedom of association by refusing to do business with a foreign nation is a bed-rock abecedarian First Principle. The exercise of such a right does not hinge upon the speculative effects the same may have upon a "collective" standard of living. Of course, the proposition that a refusal to do business with Israel by a tiny minority of the businesses in the country would result in a lowering of our collective standard of living is shakier than Lizzy Warren's claim of Cherokee heritage.

Note, I do not argue that Americans should be barred from doing business with Israel or China or Venezuela or Russia or the apartheid state of South Africa. Rather, we have no business making it unlawful for people to boycott the purchase of products from, or investing with, Israel.

                You do see the difference?

"You are essentially contending that using violence to forbid free trade should be on the table."

Actually, I'm pointing out reasons why people who don't agree with us about various things should agree with us on this issue. That's the way things get changed.

I'm against locking people in cages because they prefer certain intoxicants. If other don't agree with that but want to legalize recreational marijuana because of racism, then I'll be happy to point out that the drug war is objectively racist, too--if that's what it is.

P.P.S. The statement Omar apologized for was about Israel "hypnotizing" the world.

If there were any good reason to defend Omar's statement, surely it died just as soon as Omar apologized for it.

If there were any good reason to defend Omar's statement, surely it died just as soon as Omar apologized for it.

I suspect Omar mainly apologized after getting a talking-to by Pelosi and the other senior Dem representatives, not because she was sincere about it. The tweet, apology or not, is more indicative of her general background as a refugee from a Muslim-majority nation, and it's not like it should surprise anyone that she shares the same worldviews of those in her homeland.

ENB, like most of the Reason staff, has been heavily steeped in Beltway GroupThink. She simply can't see the obvious Jew-Hate in those statements because it doesn't fit her preconceived notions of antisemitism.

Statements like those and others from Omar and Tlaib would have created a firestorm had they been uttered by David Duke or Richard Spencer.

But because they were made by two Women of Color -- one of whom is an immigrant, a group that is automatically beyond criticism in the Reason office -- they are instantly classified as benign in ENB's world.

I'm persuaded that the basic problem in Virginia with Fairfax is identity politics.

They can't get rid of Fairfax over #MeToo allegations because it isn't clear whether they'll also get rid of the governor and company over allegations of blackface racism.

Imagine a future where a black man is removed from office over #MeToo allegations but two white men survive after having been confirmed to be in blackface. It's a package deal.

They have to get rid of the white men, too, or the shit pressure will go through the roof and turn into a shit hurricane that will leave the entire progressive eastern seaboard covered in shit.

I mean it is tough to imagine, because that would be a rational society.

Let's be clear about this - raping multiple women is several orders of magnitude worse of a crime against humanity than dressing up as Michael Jackson on Halloween, and the fact that this has to be pointed out or that some people might disagree with it is absolutely, completely, totally, insane.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

No doubt. I'm not making any judgements about the merits here--just reporting the facts as I see them.

In progressive world, racial insensitivity may be worse than actual discrimination, certainly if the racial insensitivity was perpetrated by a public figure. Projecting the unacceptability of racism seems to be more important to them than actual acts of racism, and these guys in power have committed that sin in public.

How do you sell the idea that the world would be fair and we'd all be prosperous if only the people we elected weren't racist and cared about people of all races--and then turn around and refuse to get rid of two politicians who are racially insensitive? If electing progressive snowflakes instead of racist Republicans is supposed to be the solution to our problems, then how can they keep blackface insensitivity in power?

They don't appear to have actually discriminated against anyone, but they're defeating the narrative. And that narrative is really, really, really important to Democrats and progressives.

        Correct.

But as I pointed out earlier, it'd be amusing if the ONLY person to actually get punished is the black guy. Lower black voting rates for Dems from 90%+ to 60% and they are uncompetitive in elections.

But as I pointed out earlier, it'd be amusing if the ONLY person to actually get punished is the black guy.

This is the exact type of comment I'm a little annoyed with seeing, though.

It wouldn't really be that amusing or ironic at all. The black guy did something that is 1000x worse than what the white guys did. He is more deserving of punishment. This would be the case regardless of his skin color, or the skin color of the other guys.

Him being punished and them not is a fair and just outcome - period.

The only person who's accused of anything that should be punished is the black guy.

And I would agree with your point if batshit insane hadn't been a core part of the party platform for several decades.

Well before Obergfell and the Masterpiece Cake Shop, we had municipalities effectively forcing employees to undergo not-even-alleged sexual harassment as part of their employment.

The question is specifically proposed as "Is blackface worse than alleged assaults or is a racist governor worse than any single rape?" so that when we get the most nonsensical result of their intentional gaslighting of sloppy thinkers, it seems like progress has been made.

After WWI and the British and French divided up regions into nations were people didn't always get along, the Middle East got seemingly more violent. This is partly because of difficulty in travel before the 20th Century for Stone Age Muslims and partly because of large Empires controlling large swathes of the Middle East.

The reason many US politicians have the Israel policy they do is that many of the American people support that policy, as any number of opinion polls make utterly clear. Claims that it's because of money are as ludicrous as claiming that many US politicians' support for abortion is only because politicians are paid off by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

So, then, the question is, why would someone say something as stupid as claiming position of US politicians on Israel is because of money? And, well, given that claims that Jews have used their money to buy government policy are, indeed, textbook anti-Semitism, the answer is either utterly oblivious stupidity or anti-Semitism. And if one expressed the sentiment using a slangy synecdoche for "money" that is also a common Jewish given name, well, that's either deliberate clever anti-Semitic wordplay or an even greater indicator of oblivious stupidity.

So, the question is, is Ilhan Omar an anti-Semite, or just so incredibly stupid that she shouldn't be entrusted with even the responsibility of an assistant shift manager at a fast food franchise?

Maybe you should ask an Orthodox Christian about the power of the Papacy.
But the Jewish Question has been around since ancient Egypt. Are the Greeks, Romans, Christian Kings, philosophers, theologians, artists, all bigots? Is Alaxander Solzhenitsyn a bigot for writing his history of the Jews in Russia?
The Jewish Talmud is extremely anti Christian, while surprisingly neutral about Islam. The Shabazgoyim ( useful idiots for Israel) in Congress cannot stand the perspective of these new Muslims in Congress for exposing the double standard toward Israel.
But the solution is certainly not laws targeting the Judaics. ( although the Romans had a Jewish Tax ). The solution for Libertarians is always to shrink the State, and to separate banking from the State. I heartily recommend http://www.unz.com for its outstanding commentary on this issue ( Ron Unz himself is a secular Jew, I.e. a "self hating Jew" to the Zionists.

Apparently, someone told AOC that people might not like to know they were providing a guaranteed income for people who were unwilling to work.

She had originally thought that the Treasury would just print some extra Benjamins for them.

That actually is the plan to pay for everything.

To be fair, aren't we already doing that with all that "quantitative easing"?

GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib over their criticisms of Israel.

How is accusing US citizens of "dual loyalty" criticizing the Israeli Government? It seems Greenwald's and Nolan's defenses of anti-Semites aren't driven by facts but a desire to protect anti-Semites.

It's anti-semitism, not actual criticism of Israel.

How on Earth could Israel, a tiny country be able to outspend the combined oil rich nations of the middle east?

She's making a lazy anti-semitic trope based on ignorance and hatred, not a criticism.

Radical left: It's impossible to support Trump without being a white supremacist.

Radical right: It's impossible to oppose Zionism without being an antisemite.

' He said their comments were more offensive than Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) sticking up for white nationalism. '

I'll take things that never happened for $1000, Alex.

This was the Swamp knee capping a Trump supporter.

I wonder if ENB would welcome sass on the abortion lobby's influence on Democrats.

Been perusing the stream of comments and don't recall seeing even one mention of Russians. I will confess that I am of the opinion that the whole Mueller investigation was too an extraordinary degree initiated by Democrat political misinformation and then propelled at every stage by the vehemently intense Democrat desire to overthrow the election result of 2016 that made Trump president.

That said, there are elements in Russian government and society at present that certainly will probe our democratic system for weakness. They will seek information they can use for financial or international political advantage.

Worst of all, there is an element in the Kremlin that is weapon-happy, and they have some extremely troubling new nuclear weapons systems which could be used to bully, to cow, to intimidate, and to nullify the balance of power that exists because the USA assumes that an American president would risk an escalating general nuclear war if an enemy used a tactical nuclear weapon against one specific American or allied target. A nuclear EMP strike might be such an instance. Either Russia or China might electronically disable a group of ships, but then destroy them with conventional weapons. Evidence of the nuclear air burst EMP part might be hard to absolutely verify, especially in conjunction with attacks that cause satellites to go dead.
