Illinois Seeks Social Media Accounts of Gun Owners: Reason Roundup
Plus: Nancy Pelosi on the "Green New Deal"; John Boehner, cannabis lobbyist

State police would inspect social accounts for signs of "mental health issues." Seldom content to let its coastal counterparts take all the glory for bad ideas, Illinois is following New York's lead and proposing that all prospective gun buyers give the government access to their social media accounts.
Under a new proposal being considered by the Illinois legislature, people who want a license to own firearms or ammunition would have to submit a list of all their public-facing online accounts to the state police.
State Rep. Daniel Didech (D–Buffalo Grove) suggests that the law is necessary because too many people with "mental health issues" are buying guns. That's a debatable claim, but at least it's within the realm of realism. Where Didech goes off the rails is supposing the state authorities could identify dangerous people simply by looking at their social media presence, and that this determination would be sufficient to deny them their First and Second Amendment rights.
It's also silly to think people with accounts likely to scare off gun-permit granters would actually reveal those accounts to police.
Didech tells the local CBS station: "A lot of people who are having mental health issues will often post on their social media pages that they're about to hurt themselves or others. We need to give those people the help they need."
Mental health advocates, the state rifle association, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois are already speaking out against Didech's proposal.

John Boehner chairs National Cannabis Roundtable. The former House speaker is supposed to announce the initiative today. "An industry-funded group to lobby for cannabis reform," writes Mike Allen, "the group has seven founding companies, including Acreage Holdings, where he's on the board."
On the new organization's homepage, a quote attributed to Boehner says that "the membership of the National Cannabis Roundtable represents every aspect of the cannabis supply chain. Our members operate in 23 states with legal cannabis programs, including the District of Columbia. We are growers, processors, retailers, wellness centers, investors, entrepreneurs, and publicly traded companies."

The Green Dream, or whatever. On the "Green New Deal" proposed by freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–Calif.) said yesterday:
It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The Green Dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it, right?
Later, Pelosi told reporters:
Quite frankly I haven't seen it, but I do know that it's enthusiastic, and we welcome all the enthusiasm that's out there. I'm very excited about it all, and I welcome the Green New Deal and any other proposals.
CNN's Chris Cillizza writes that "none of this necessarily suggests that there is an any animosity between Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez. Rather, what Pelosi's comment about the 'Green New Deal' represents is that the speaker wants to make very clear how things work in the House. AOC may be a star nationally, but in the House she is just a very junior member of Pelosi's majority— albeit it one with a larger-than-normal megaphone on issues close to her."

Who cast RBG's vote?
Talk about "late term"....
Hello.
"...It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The Green Dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it, right?"
Duh. You have to pass it to know what's in it!
"...Quite frankly I haven't seen it, but I do know that it's enthusiastic, and we welcome all the enthusiasm that's out there. I'm very excited about it all, and I welcome the Green New Deal and any other proposals."
10 year mobilization plans are just more enthusiastic Five year plans by other means.
re: "struck down"
No, they didn't. They blocked enforcement of the law while the appeals are being heard.
YOU are ruining the narrative that Lefties won another big battle to keep destroying fetuses.
I'm shocked that ENB got that wrong. She's normally better than that.
It was only a temporary stay of enforcement of the law. It has nothing to do with an actual decision on the law.
Her son
Where Didech goes off the rails is supposing the state authorities could identify dangerous people simply by looking at their social media presence, and that this determination would be sufficient to deny them their First and Second Amendment rights.
Simply having a social media account is proof of derangement. Surprise!
The Green Dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they're for it, right?
We won't know what shade of green whatever it is is until we pass it.
Nightshade?
Soylent shade of green.
Right, they don't know what shade of green it is. But no matter, they all know it's red inside, and that is all that matters.
What? No Bezos Exposes Pecker type headlines?
Do you have any terrible economic news to share today, moneyshot? I think between the two of us we can do the job Palin's Buttplug used to do before he got banned. But I glanced at Bloomberg.com and didn't find anything particularly juicy today.

#UnbanPalinsButtplug
Please sir, I am not into scat.
Well you were, til I pointed out that your obsession with having buttplug in your name made it obvious, and then you fled hoping we'd forget about it.
It's not big enough for a headline.
Speaking of manhoods, possessing one unapologetically might soon be listed as a mental illness in the DSM.
I believe the New York Post had exactly that headline.
I'd be more impressed if it had been the Washington Post. 😀
Quite frankly I haven't seen it, but I do know that it's enthusiastic, and we welcome all the enthusiasm that's out there.
Hopefully she took the gavel out of her hand before patting them on the head.
We'll just hang it right here on the refrigerator, ok? Now run along and play with your friends.

One of the few positive developments of the Drumpf years is the ACLU going in a more intersectional, left-libertarian direction. So it's especially disappointing to see them on the wrong side of history when it comes to common sense gun safety legislation.
As longtime libertarian activist Michael Hihn has noted, there are plenty of worthwhile gun violence prevention initiatives that are perfectly constitutional. This is clearly one of them. I hope Illinois doesn't cave to the gun fetishists.

THEM ACLU IS A BUNCH OF GODDAMN GUN-GRABBIN' LIBRULS!
OK, now it's almost creepy how similar your writing style is to Palin's Buttplug's. Perhaps I should end my hashtag campaign to reinstate him since you're such an effective replacement.
#MoneyshotIsTheNewPalinsButtplug
I am certainly not the first to imitate a certain ignorant swath of the US electorate.
Maybe not. But if you want to continue in this direction, becoming the next best thing to the original Palin's Buttplug, here are some helpful tips:
Bring up Stormy Daniels in unrelated topics.
Post links detailing the atrocious state of the Drumpf economy (I'll keep doing this too).
Mention your Libertarian Purity Score.
Use clever expressions like "Aborto-Freak."
You follow these suggestions, it'll almost be like PB never left.
Fuck off screech.
I think you just got an endorsement.
I got an interesting glimpse into what is happening behind the scenes at our biggest online providers this morning.
I was using someone else's tablet to read the news. Someone who does not read libertarian sites and does not follow the news.
So I start typing in the URL to get to reason. And when I had typed "reason.c" Google's suggest offer this: "reason.com bias" as the only suggested search term.
Blame the someone else, not Google. I got a bunch of suggestions besides bias.
As someone who constantly reads this blog, it is also the first autofill in Chrome at work.
Also note that it links to two rating websites that call it center-right or leaning right and then goes into detail about how factual the info is ("uses credible links"). Some of the info is correct, some is opinion, and some doesn't match my perception. But overall it doesn't link to websites that say reason is some severely biased news publication; just evaluates (using whatever metrics, I wasn't studying the thing) the general sense of the website.
Yeah, I did not delve that deep. I just thought it was interesting that a site with as much history as reason would have bias as the first thing coming up as a search term.
By way of contrast, CNN.c gives me CNN.com, CNN.com/activate, etc.
Huff gives me " Huffington Post" "Huffington Post News" etc.
Nit the end of the world. But interesting.
As to the merits of the bias evaluation, if they read anything at reason other than the comments and come to the conclusion that it leans right, they I have very little idea of what right means.
At least, that is my subjective experience. I would say that the writing at reason is dominated by left Libertarians. Or am I off base in this assumption?
I think to everyone else "wants less taxes and regulation" automatically makes you right wing. Apparently far right means anyone right of the NYT on regulations and taxes, with the rightmost point being... well, I don't know - tax haven with a huge military?
Which is why the left-right spectrum is an even less useful description now than it was in the past.
But proclaiming oneself to be libertarian is still equally useful. We get to spout off about how everyone else is an idiot.
Its great to be correct....all...the...time.
Fuck off, Nazi troll bitch!
You've never been "correct" on anything around here, poser!
Fuck off screech.
First, yes typing reason.c into Google does result in "reason.com bias" as the second result below "reason.com". The URL search is similar.
Media Bias Fact Check says:
"Politically, Reason falls within the Right-Center category based on economic positions (right) and socially liberal positions (Left). "
Which makes no damned sense. On the other hand, most of the Fact Check sites lean Left and from a Right wing POV, if you are only half Left you must be Right.
"I would say that the writing at reason is dominated by left Libertarians."
Reason regularly posts from Peter Suderman, who isn't a Libertarian and Shika Dalhmia who's pretty much a one topic (pro-pro immigration) writer. Overall, Reason is over all a Libertarian site, but it's clear that the articles tend to be left Libertarian and the comments tend to be right Libertarian.
Should have been:
"most of the Fact Check sites lean Left and from a Left wing POV, if you are only half Left you must be Right."
Shika Dalhmia who's pretty much a one topic (pro-pro immigration) writer.
IDK, she does a pretty good job of shitting on economics, free speech, religion, etc. in her coverage of that one topic.
Just as the right folk here day that left Libertarianism is just leftism, people on the left believe it to be nothing but Libertarianism, which they believe to be right wing. Nothing more than that.
I'm not sure I know what a left libertarian is.
But when I hear "left" I think of economics. And there is no overlap with libertarianism there. Social liberalism (at least as far as what you think the law should be goes) is just libertarian.
I get that suggestion even though I've been reading Reason for 15+ years. (not that this browser is 15 years old though)
No, the Wu-Tang Clan Did Not All Have Sex With That Woman
Way to ruin my childhood.
All I know is I ain't fuck her! When I saw her, I was like, I ain't been there
I feel you, brother.
A long time ago in another life I used to I work in a lab doing paternity tests. It was the largest lab in the country, so we did a lot of tests for legal proceedings. The ones for court proceedings came with chain of custody documents, including photographs of the people getting their blood drawn.
So we would inevitably offer our opinions as to whether we thought he did it. And you could usually tell.
One famous athlete came through and the young lady was and 11 on a scale of 10, even in a bad polaroid, sitting in a phlebotomist chair without makeup and with a needle sticking out of her arm. Everyone agreed, "oh yeah, absolutely, he did that."
Sure enough. An absolute match.
Then Doug Williams came through. This was immediately after winning the Super Bowl MVP. The claim was from his college days.
One look at her picture and everyone agreed, not a chance. Sure enough, the very first panel proved he was not the father.
Based on that experience, I can see where the Wu-Tang Clan is coming from.
Bonus for those of you with twisted senses of humor: Tom Segura's "woman on a Wu Tang bus" story.
I ain't fuck her either.
Wu-Tang Clan ain't nuthin to fuck wit.
Quite frankly I haven't seen it, but I do know that it's enthusiastic, and we welcome all the enthusiasm that's out there.
"But enough about President Trump's new wall legislation."
Maybe I'm more suspicious of the benevolent government overlords than most, but what's to stop an official who's been granted access to your social media accounts from posting crazy threats purportedly from you? They could do this to anyone they see as a threat and then drag them off to jail.
They will not need to do that. They will just pick a post and say it proves you are crazy. Since you are crazy, you cannot plausibly contest their opinion.
End of story.
End of the second amendment.

Yeah, I saw that article yesterday. My very first reaction was Ayn Rand is not their hero. That probably would go to Mises.
Rand was an objectivist. Not a Libertarian. And certainly not an anarcho-capitalist.
It's not exactly an accurate read on libertarian-related philosophy, but fuck it Libertarians are fucking weirdos.
We certainly don't do anything to dispel that myth around here.
Myth: Busted.
Don't an-cappers believe in private security? This guy's shooting was clearly his own fault for not hiring the right people.
I would think so. They are not government law enforcement, since there is no government and no criminal laws AND private security would just protect private property.
Blalock, 20, a junior at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, will be studying for the next four months in Irkutsk, Siberia... "Existing as a woman in a foreign country which values my ability to fulfill stereotypical feminine roles over my experiences makes me feel vulnerable," said Blalock, who will be taking classes in ecology and Russian. "Combine this with cowardly legislative moves that refuse to validate the experiences of and support survivors of sexual violence. Yes, I feel defenseless."
Sweetheart, you might be better off locking yourself in your dorm room and never get closer to Irkutsk than on a Risk board.
Maybe she wouldn't feel so defenseless if she could carry a gun.
Anecdote - I will never forget the time my four units in Irkutsk held off a full on invasion from Kamchatka and Ural.
What about the Ukraine?
Ukraine is the key to holding both Europe and Asia.

Didech says his bill is a less intrusive version of a similar measure that's been proposed in New York state. That version allows police to recover a gun license applicant's entire browsing history. Even Didech says that goes too far.
Sheesh, Didech -- I thought you wanted to get people the help they need. The next blood is on *your* hands.
Where Didech goes off the rails is supposing the state authorities could identify dangerous people simply by looking at their social media presence

"State police would inspect social accounts for signs of "mental health issues.""
How many different ways can something be unconstitutional?
Depriving people of their Second Amendment rights without them ever being indicted much less having a trial?
Violating people's First Amendment rights in order to validate their Second Amendment rights?
Who among the state police are qualified to make determinations of sanity based on social media posts? Are there even psychiatric professionals who would claim to be able to make such diagnoses?
Evidently every way, since the 2nd Amendment protect the people's right to keep and bear Arms.
No exceptions for background checks, 'suspicious' social media accounts, past felonies, cannot get permit, politicians don't like it....
It violates the 4A too. Triple negative is back to negative. The need to get rid of one.
Silly me. No due process is a 5A violation. Quadruple negative is a positive... for the children.
Let me clear it up for you. They will use the same folks who Facebook and Twitter use for censorship.
State police would inspect social accounts for signs of "mental health issues."
And if the applicant doesn't have a "social" media account? I know people who wouldn't join Facebook if you paid them.
But would they join if the government forced them?
Or would they join if government said that you cannot get a gun license unless you had a social media account?
Stop giving them ideas! The government's already said we have to have cell phones!
Yeah. Those iPhones with unremovable batteries to allow unfettered tracking was a genius idea.

I am reminded of how the Soviets defined "mental health issues" and how they employed their psychiatric institutions to "treat" it.
Exactly. Next up: "Gun Ownership Obsessive Disorder" -- with a different acronym.
Just get rid of "Owner." The left already hates that acronym anyway.
Yup. The government deciding if you are mentally competent to be free, what could go wrong?

No, you're not wrong at all, Reason's wannabe hooker is wrong, as she usually is (her reading comprehension skills aren't the strongest). Enforcement of the law is on hold, but it has NOT been struck down (yet at least).
It's also silly to think people with accounts likely to scare off gun-permit granters would actually reveal those accounts to police.

Nice. And shows that we need to start thinking about defunding law enforcement. #sorry2breakit2u
And I presume that not having social media accounts is proof you should not have any second amendment rights?
Or, of more immediate concern, what are the odds that posting at reason.com would not count as evidence of a mental illness?

People who believe in group think don't need guns. They cam buy fumigation bombs in the grocery store along with some scented candles.

I voted for Hillary Clinton, literally the most qualified Presidential candidate ever, specifically to avoid such cowardly and reckless foreign policy decisions. With her years of experience and successful tenure as Secretary of State, she would never leave Syria or Afghanistan without finishing the job. But that's the key difference between her and Drumpf ? Clinton serves America's interests, while Drumpf serves Russia's.

Jeff "the Bozo" Bezos: Donald Trump might have stolen my personal dick picks. ROFLMAO.
Trump didn't have anything to do with this. But as for the National Enquirer, if you want to bring down the richest person in the world, you better have more than a few dick picks. Those dipshits are way out of their league - this isn't Ben Affleck or Justin Bieber they're fucking with. National Enquirer is about to find out what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass.
Looks to me like Bezos managed to fuck himself in the ass when he cheated on his wife. He's about to go through what will probably be the most expensive divorce in the history of mankind.
The most likely and rational explanation is that his chippie sidepiece gave them the photos in order to get back at him and ruin his marriage. And she succeeded spectacularly.
If you're a married superbillionaire with no prenup, don't cheat on your wife. If you do cheat on your wife, DO NOT TAKE PICTURES. This isn't hard.
When New York proposed this, the excuse was that gun permit applicants might be gang members.
Now it is mental illness?
We need to see all yearbooks featuring any information on a politician prior to even entering a race. Taxes be damned they can cheat on those and even the IRS might not know. Perhaps personal corespondence, too. Archived text messages, etc. if these people purport to represent me I want their private lives aligned with mine. Sounds pretty idiotic as I write, but then so do our political representatives
A mandatory black face search, yes!

Its been a dumb as shit week. We had the blackface panic which I guess covered for the proposed baby murder legislation, shhhh
Now they can revoke your 2A rights if they don't like your Facebook page? Yea that will work
Then whats a dumb week without some AOC. the Green New deal is the dumbest thing I've seen from any elected official. A very low bar but she manged to still slip under it.
Now I'm asking for input here. Is she the dumbest elected official? Lets stick to right now versus all time.
But do you think she's hot? Probably a more important question she is as dumb as a box of rocks,.
And she ever been or contemplated being in blackface?
But do you think she's hot?
Hey, how about drafting her for People magazine's "Sexiest Woman Alive"? That could give her career a much-needed boost.
So I'm guessing you vote yes on the hot question?
My take is that on a general population basis she's is hot but not smoking.
But this begs another question is she the hottest elected official in the US congress?
As far as I know yes by a gigantic amount. I mean most of these chicks are fugly or may have had some heat at a younger age but not now since the average age is about a 100 not so much.
Umm, she was plenty hot in that dance video thing she did years ago.
Nice tight shirt. Titties just right.
She'd be a lot happier in Venezuela where the peasants wipe their asses with rocks and none of that cottony paper destroys the earth.
She's pretty hot by Washington DC, and in particular Capitol Hill, standards, but that is a very low bar. And yes, she is pretty fucking stupid, but I haven't met many 29 year olds who didn't think they are the smartest person on earth. Which says something about senator Mahhkey from fucking Massachusetts who co-sponsered the legislation in the senate - that guy is in his 70s and should fucking know better.
