Chicago Police Deny Claim That Jussie Smollett Identified Attackers as White, Can't Get Their Story Straight About Whether He Heard Them Say 'MAGA'

Empire star Jussie Smollett is in the hospital after two people allegedly assaulted him on the streets of Chicago around 2:00 a.m. last night.

The police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, since the perpetrators reportedly made racist and homophobic slurs. Smollett is a gay black man.

Several media outlets referenced claims that appeared in TMZ's coverage of this matter, most notably that the perpetrators were white and yelled "this is MAGA country," as they attacked Smollett. But a spokesperson for the Chicago police denied having any information about the race and political views of the attackers.*

"According to the victim, the offenders' faces were concealed," a police spokesperson told Reason. "We have no record indicating that [they shouted 'MAGA'], we only have record of them shouting racial and homophobic slurs at him."

Chicago police have also released a statement contradicting claims that Smollett identified his attackers' race and heard them shout "MAGA."

"We have no record of The MAGA Country comment," said the police in a statement. "We have racial and homophobic comments documented."

Until we know more, it would be wise to avoid making any sweeping generalizations about who to blame for this. The best course of action right now is to wish Smollett a speedy recovery and wait for better information.

Updated at 7:30 p.m.: Chicago PD now tell me via email that "in the initial reports there was no mention of MAGA," but "when detectives follow[ed] up with him later in the day, he recalled the offender[s] making those comments and detectives completed a supplemental report." It would appear that earlier statements by the police were erroneous. I have changed the headline of this article to reflect new information, and await a statement from Smollett himself.

OK, let me correct the location confusion. Allegedly this incident occurred around McClurg Ct. and North Water street in the Streeterville area of Chicago. If you are confused Google it. Allegedly the victim was going to or coming from a Subway shop which is open24 hours and is located about 500 North McClurg Court. Northwestern memorial hospital is only a few blocks north of this location. therefore , it is logical the victim would seek medical attention there since it is the closest ER.

The Daily Beast notes the CPD denies the mention of "MAGA" references or mention of the race of perpetrators. However, there are still of questions one could ask about this story.

OT, but reason might want to keep an eye on this latest Houston police raid and shootout that ended up with four officers hit and two homeowners dead. It is starting to have some similarities to the infamous Kathryn Johnston shooting in Atlanta.

Cliffs: HPD raids a house where allegedly several sales of black tar heroin were made to U/C officers. Door gets kicked in, the homeowner allegedly sets their pit bull on the lead officer, he shoots the pitbull. Homeowner then shoots the officer with a 357. Second homeowner reaches for lead officer's shotgun, and gets killed by the rest of the stack. Somewhere in that, three other officers get shot, two in the neck. Both homeowners are shot and killed by police.

No black tar heroin found. Cops found guns, some weed, and an unidentified bag of white powder, that is claimed to be either fentanyl or coke. Deceased homeowners are 20 year married couple, in their late 50s, with next to no criminal record in Texas (wife had a bad check charge some time in the past). Neighbors claimed couple had few to no visitors. Oh, and allegedly, the address yelled out on scanner intercepts of the cop's radio, doesn't match the address on the warrant.

They start going a little sideways when they talk about Smollett coming out as gay:

Yeah, I don't really think anyone in 2015 gave two craps about some actor they never heard of being gay. The number one sitcom included a married gay couple at the time. Empire was a big show that year, but did anyone really care if some guy they already assumed was gay turned out to be gay?

The police watched long hours of CCTV footage and never saw the alleged assault. They did find two "persons of interest" who happened to be near the area. Which is another way of saying that the cops are reduced to asking nearby pedestrians if they assaulted a man with a rope and bleach.

Maybe they're acting on late breaking tips, who knows. But with no video evidence, Smollett has some splaing to do.

I saw this story and it just raised a lot of questions. This guy is in this place at 2am, two random masked men (who happen to have a rope and somehow know Smollets is gay) appear out of no where and torment him with racial and homophobic slurs, assault him (minor injuries) and put a rope around his neck reminiscent of old west lynchings. No witnesses, so far no video. I want to believe someone when they say something happened to him, but we've seen too many of these incidents turn out to be staged. Everyone jumps on the bandwagon about racism and white supremacy and uses this as an example of how things are supposedly getting worse.

ANOTHER UPDATE: It looks like the whole incident is coming apart under closer scrutiny. Here's an NBC story that casts further doubt on the alleged victim's account of the "attack."

In addition to both Smollett AND his manager refusing to turn over their cell phones to verify the racist conversation the manager claims he heard during the attack, there is now security camera footage of Smollett returning to his apartment building wearing the noose, but not acting the least perturbed. Meanwhile there is still zero evidence to substantiate the attack -- let alone that it was a racist attack.
