Italian lawmakers are considering a law that would require all films made in that nation be shown in theaters before they can be released on a streaming service like Netflix. They say Italian films should be widely available, not just to those who pay for a particular streaming service. They also admit the bill is aimed at protecting cinemas.

  1. They can put first-run streamers in the same prison wing as scientists who fail to predict earthquakes.

  2. They say Italian films should be widely available, not just to those who pay for a particular streaming service.
And the theaters shouldn’t exclude people because they can’t afford to pay.

    1. And they should have real butter for the popcorn.

  3. Why are they trying to make everything worse? It reminds me of the war with Uber. They don’t understand that we’re living in the age of the new economy, so their decisions won’t improve or change the current paradigm. My friend who works at EduBirdie in Uk is concerned about similar problems in other spheres of life due to Brexit. From my point of view, we should pay more attention to similar situations. Hope that eventually, governments will stop such attacks.

    1. We tried that HOPE thing with governments; it did not work. We tried CHANGE too; same failure.

    2. Nice subtle spam.

      1. They’re getting better. Skynet approaches.

  4. Italians don’t understand straight-to-video movies? It’s not going to help theaters to screen B movie crap nobody’s going to be willing to pay top dollar for even though they’re willing to pay a couple of bucks to watch it at their leisure. It’s not like Steven Spielberg is on staff for $150 million-budget Netflix movies, these are the made-for-TV sort of movies that cost $3 million to have M Night Shyamalan put out.

    1. They’re currently making at least one ~$150 million movie. Netflix spends more on content than Hollywood does on all its movies.

  5. And underwear will be worn on the outside so we can check.

  6. If YouTube videos count as films, we should get ready for the premiere of “YTP: Spongebob Squarepants Mette Una Ciambella Nella Sua Cacca.”

  7. Wait, what? They want to throttle wide distribution and limit it to venues where you must pay to view, because offering it in ten times as many venues where you must pay to view somehow limits distribution?

    Are they even trying anymore?

  8. thus would be a boon for neighboring countries’ movie industry, as filming in Italy would become much less attractive.

P.S. The link to the AFP article isn’t working, at last not on my iPhone.

    1. “This,” not “thus”.

      ?Fouled up by my iPhone.
